Nesbitt was born in New York City, December 6, 1928. He was raised in Washington, D.C. and attended the Westminster School of Simsbury, CT. He graduated from Amherst College with a BA in 1951 and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He graduated from Columbia University in 1958 with an MFA in Directing.
