The Pap Corps Makes Historic $8.4 Million Donation for Cancer Research – Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to Benefit from Nonprofit’s Largest Gift

During the check presentation event, which took place at Boca West Country Club, Dr. Antonio Iavarone, the deputy director of Sylvester and a renowned expert in glioblastoma and other aggressive brain tumors, spoke to the over 400 members in attendance about the outstanding advances that are occurring thanks to cancer research. During his presentation, he acknowledged the incomparable support of The Pap Corps members and thanked them for their untiring dedication.

The Pap Corps-funded Sylvester Game Changer Vehicle to Provide Free Health Screenings

We are very proud that the Sylvester Game Changer vehicle will be offering free cancer screenings and education to thousands of people every year."

The third Sylvester Game Changer vehicle, which is the largest-to-date, is co-branded with logos of both The Pap Corps and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to further expand awareness about the special relationship between the nonprofit and South Florida's only NCI-designated cancer center. The converted tractor freightliner is equipped with two private rooms for consultations, a full phlebotomy area, and a multimedia area for interactive education about cancer-related topics. The vehicles all feature artistically designed exteriors by world-renowned Neo-Pop artist Peter Tunney.

The Pap Corps Donates $3.5 Million to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- You can't keep champions down! Rebounding from COVID-19, The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research (www.thepapcorps.org) came back full swing with their fundraising for the 2021/2022 fiscal year. At their May meeting, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit donated $3.5 million to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Almost 300 Pap Corps members, along with leaders from Sylvester, enjoyed a beautiful breakfast at Boca West, where the check was presented to Jayne Sylvester Malfitano on behalf of the center.

"I am so proud of our amazing members," declared Sally Berenzweig, CEO of The Pap Corps. "Your dedication and passion, especially during these past few years, has been such an inspiration."

Jayne Sylvester Malfitano, whose parents endowed the center, spoke eloquently about the special partnership between The Pap Corps and Sylvester, and shared several of the numerous scientific advancements that have occurred thanks to research, including the rise of precision medicine, which is an approach to cancer treatment that is targeted at genetic markers in each person's unique cancer.

Sylvester is the only NCI-Designated Cancer Center in South Florida, and The Pap Corps has donated over $110 million during the past 70 years to support cancer research. To celebrate these seven decades of giving, Robert Weinroth, Mayor of Palm Beach County presented a proclamation honoring the nonprofit's service.

Other event highlights included recognizing top donors in multiple categories, honoring retiring chapter presidents and welcoming new chapter presidents.

The Pap Corps Donates $2 Million to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

DEERIELD BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Overcoming the numerous obstacles imposed by the pandemic, The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research displayed their indomitable spirit during their May Presidents Zoom meeting when they announced a $2 million donation to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The nonprofit has made numerous multimillion dollar donations to support research at South Florida's only NCI Designated cancer center; however, this year's gift required tremendous determination and innovative fundraising.

"I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the way our board and our 20,000 members rallied during these difficult times," said Susan Dinter, chair of The Pap Corps. "While COVID-19 stopped many things, it did not stop cancer or our members! I am so proud of the incredible resourcefulness of our wonderful volunteers and am thrilled that during National Cancer Research Month we were able to make this substantial donation."

Pap Corps members, throughout all 50 chapters, created virtual versions of their usual fundraisers and also developed new strategies, events and campaigns to raise money. In addition, the launch of the Giving Train monthly donation program, brick and bench sales at The Garden of Hope in Deerfield Beach and the growth of events in Palm Beach helped the organization develop new paths for fundraising.

During the Zoom meeting, Dr. Stephen Nimer, Director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center spoke to the members and thanked them for their commitment and generosity.

"While we were unable to gather in person for this check presentation, I know everyone felt a tremendous sense of accomplishment," stated Sally Berenzweig, who assumed the role of CEO in January 2021. "Working with these incredible volunteers during the past months has truly been an inspiration, and I look forward to what we will achieve during the months ahead."

My father Aaron Friedman honors Bobbi's memory annually when he donates to the Woodfield Chapter largest fundraiser the 'Bobbi Friedman Memorial Card Party.' And my mother-in-law, Sandy Berenzweig, is an active member of the Boca Pointe chapter. Through my family, I have witnessed the dedication and commitment Pap Corps members have for this cause, and it's beyond inspiring. And like so many, I have experienced the heartbreaking loss of too many people I love to cancer. The loss of family and friends fuels my determination to find a cure. For me, the Pap Corp Champions for Cancer Research mission was tailor-made for my skill-set and passion as I launch the next phase of my career."

Berenzweig is a very familiar face in the philanthropic world as she was the co-founder and former CEO of KidSafe Foundation and was recognized for her outstanding leadership as a 2019 L'Oreal Paris Women of Worth Honoree. Sally also received the distinguished Jefferson Award for Public Service. After 14 years with the organization, Berenzweig was ready for change and a new challenge. She handed the baton to her successor and began exploring opportunities in the consulting realm until she connected with The Pap Corps leadership, who recruited her to fill the position that has been vacant for several months.

In addition to her stellar nonprofit background, Berenzweig is a former Psychotherapist who has a Masters in Education and a Masters in Counseling Psychology. Sally is the co-author of a parenting book, two award-winning children's books, eLearn trainings and an 8-lesson curriculum for children that has been taught in Palm Beach and Broward County School Districts for over 10 years. Sally is also a member of the Soroptimist International.

The Pap Corps Unveils Vision for ‘Garden of Hope’ and Brick Campaign

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research will unveil the vision for its eagerly awaited "Garden of Hope" project at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Deerfield Beach, during a free, virtual event October 15, 2020, beginning at 6 p.m. The Zoom webinar, co-hosted by Sylvester Director, Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., will showcase beautiful renderings of the garden, which is designed to be a place of peaceful reflection, and will feature bricks, benches and plaques honoring loved ones, physicians, and volunteers.

The "Garden of Hope" has been a dream of the non-profit since the Deerfield Beach location was named The Pap Corps Campus in 2016 after its historic $50 million dollar pledge to Sylvester, which is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in South Florida, and only the second one in the state. The garden will feature a stunning, bronze-colored fountain, benches, plaques with inspirational sayings, and a pathway of multi-colored bricks engraved with personalized inscriptions and dedications. The area will be surrounded by lush landscaping, including shade trees and flowers. The design concept was created by the architectural firm of Curtis & Rogers, the construction firm is BDW Construction, and completion is anticipated in Spring 2021.

"'The Garden of Hope' reflects the immeasurable generosity and conviction of The Pap Corps as we accelerate our efforts to eradicate cancer," said Dr. Nimer, M.D., who is also the Oscar de la Renta Endowed Chair in Cancer Research. "We are deeply grateful for their visionary partnership and the profound impact it continues to have on research excellence and patient care at Sylvester."

Opportunities to support the project are open to all and include the purchase of dedicated bricks, as well as pre-sale on benches for phase two of the project. Thanks to early contributions, all the benches in phase 1 are sold out, with some remaining opportunities to purchase plaques on the Fountain of Hope and Wall of Hope.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Pap Corps (thepapcorps.org) is proud to announce the Dr. Kevin Berkowitz Memorial End of Year Giving Campaign will help fund the purchase, retrofit and operation of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center's 3rd Game Changer Vehicle.

This air-conditioned RV will service medically underserved communities in north Broward and Palm Beach counties offering free cancer screenings, education and referrals, in addition to providing free medication to prevent HIV to at risk patients.

"Expanding access to cancer screenings that lead to early detection is truly a game changer. Early cancer detection is vital to better cancer outcomes and this program has already proven that with their efforts in Monroe and Miami Dade counties," said Pap Corps CEO David Bakelman. "The Pap Corps is honored to make this funding commitment to Sylvester and our community."

Pap Corps President Linda Moses announced at the November Presidents' Meeting that the nonprofit has designated a donation of $500,000 towards the 3rd Game Changer vehicle, covering the purchase, retrofit and two years of operation. The recreational vehicle will be equipped with two private rooms for consultations and cancer screenings, along with a comfortable multimedia center for interactive education about cancer-related topics.

"The outside of this 3rd vehicle will be co-branded with logos of both The Pap Corps and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center," said Moses. "This will further expand awareness about the special relationship between our nonprofit and the only NCI-Designated cancer center in South Florida."

This is the fifth year of the Dr. Kevin Berkowitz Memorial End of Year Giving Campaign. The program was created by Beverly Berkowitz, The Pap Corps' Officer-at-Large to honor the memory of her late son.

"I am so proud this year's campaign will fund this ground-breaking program which has garnered national acclaim and is now being studied and replicated by other cancer institutions," said Berkowitz. "There is a tremendous lack of access to formal healthcare for so many in our community. This vehicle will help bridge that disparity."

The Pap Corps Receives $100,000 Matching Gift Challenge by The Yass Family

Jerry Yass made this generous gift during the recent Pap Corps Presidents' Meeting at Boca West Country Club in honor of his late wife, Sybil, who died in 2001 from melanoma.

"Jerry is one of our most dedicated and generous Pap Corps members, and we are honored that his donation will encourage others to give during our critical end of year giving campaign."

Jerry Yass, an active member of the Boca Friends Chapter of The Pap Corps, moved the audience of over 400 during his emotional speech at the Presidents' Meeting when he read a poem he wrote about the challenges a family endures when a loved one is battling melanoma.

"South Floridians need to be better educated about the risks of skin cancer, especially melanoma," said Linda Moses, President of The Pap Corps. "In addition to raising research funds, we hope this end of year giving campaign will raise awareness about prevention, the need for regular skin cancer screenings and the tremendous work doctors at Sylvester are doing to advance new treatments."

During the past 30 years melanoma rates have been on the rise. In 2018, it is estimated that 91,270 people will be diagnosed with melanoma, and that 9,320 will die from this form of skin cancer. Early detection and advanced treatments are critical to increasing survival rates. Sylvester offers a world-class melanoma surveillance and detection clinic, immunotherapy clinical trials, advanced expertise in immunohistochemistry and tumor markers. In addition, Sylvester is one of the few institutions to offer reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) which differentiates melanoma from less serious skin lesions.

Dr. Kevin Berkowitz, a generous supporter of The Pap Corps, established the first end of year matching campaign in 2014 and it now continues in his memory.
