United for Human Rights Brings Its Cutting-Edge Program and Technology to the National School Boards Association Conference 2024

NEW ORLEANS, La. /ScoopCloud/ -- United for Human Rights brought its youth-friendly human rights program to NSBA24 - National School Boards Association (NSBA) Conference for 2024 in New Orleans April 6 to 8. The purpose of NSBA is "to ensure each student everywhere has access to excellent and equitable public education governed by high-performing school board leaders and supported by the community." So how does human rights education relate to this endeavor?

"Human rights education is essential," says United for Human Rights Coordinator Emma Sims.

A recent article in the Washington Post found nearly 200 incidents of suicides by children bullied at school. "Parents whose bullied children end their lives are seeking to hold schools accountable. More and more are filing suit... 'It's a wake-up call to schools around the country that unless you protect our children, you will be in the same position'" said an attorney representing one of these families.

"There could be no more important issue than to guarantee the safety of our children at school," says Sims. "When youth learn their rights as laid out by the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, they realize that bullying isn't just a personal problem. It's a violation of their rights. We know of many instances where youth who have completed this curriculum take responsibility for the safety of their classmates. Those who would earlier simply stand by and watch while their classmates are bullied take action personally or alert their teachers or school resource officers to get help with what's going on.

"But educators or administrators are often balked by budget cuts or simply lack the time to design a compelling curriculum that will get through to kids about human rights and their importance."

This was a key reason United for Human Rights organized a booth at NSBA24 - to inform school board members that the United for Human Rights educator package is available to them free of charge. Included in the package:

UHR is motivated by the belief that despite myriad human rights abuses in the world today, if youth truly understood the 30 rights enshrined in this United Nations document and insisted on their own rights and the rights of others, we could create a sea change in society in a single generation," says Sims.

United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights are supported by Scientology Churches and Scientologists, making it possible to provide materials free of charge to educators, civic and community leaders and anyone wishing to educate youth on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Church of Scientology of Berlin: Poetry and Art Convey the Importance of Human Rights

BERLIN, Germany /ScoopCloud/ -- In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Church of Scientology of Berlin held an art exhibition and poetry reading as a living example of Article 19: Freedom of Expression.

Held in the Public Information Center of the Church at Otto-Suhr-Allee 30 in the heart of Berlin, the program featured poetry readings and paintings by three artists, all focusing on articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The exhibition opened with an overview presented by the Church of Scientology Berlin social reform officer covering initiatives the Church supports that raise awareness of human rights. He shared why the Church decided to feature the arts in this celebration.

In the book Science of Survival, author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote:

The artist has an enormous role in the enhancement of today's and the creation of tomorrow's reality. He operates in a rank in advance of science as to the necessities and requirements of Man. The elevation of a culture can be measured directly by the numbers of its people working in the field of aesthetics... Because the artist deals in future realities, he always seeks improvements or changes in the existing reality. This makes the artist, inevitably and invariably, a rebel against the status quo. The artist, day by day, by postulating the new realities of the future, accomplishes peaceful revolution."

One poet focused on the importance of people speaking up about what they believe. The right to do so is enshrined in Article 19 of the UDHR: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

The other poet spoke of her personal spiritual goals and what she has attained through her studies and practice of the Scientology religion - a right enshrined in UDHR Article 18: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion."

A guest commented that he never realized the importance of Article 20, freedom of assembly and association, until the COVID lockdown, when measures to protect people prevented free practice of this right. It was only when all restrictions were canceled that he realized what a toll this had taken on his sense of well-being and community.

Church of Scientology of Ventura Commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

While the United States Department of State estimates the number of individuals trafficked into the U.S. each year to be 18,000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act suggests this figure to actually be approximately 50,000 per year.

Church of Scientology of Rome Promotes a Culture of Human Rights for a Better Word

They presented "Human Rights Defender" awards to individuals who set an example of helping others through their human rights advocacy: Alessandra Morelli, who served for decades as delegate of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); world-renowned Moroccan musician Nour Eddine Fatty; musician and India's cultural ambassador to Italy Rashmi Bhatt; and actor and philanthropist Paolo Pesce Nanna.

Also commended were the Demetra Borbonica Cultural Association, which supports and disseminates human rights in the field of the arts; the Prosperity and Social Promotion Association for its fight to free children from slavery; and Felix Adado and Hassan Batal who help orient immigrants to the customs and mores of their new home.

Ms. Morelli spoke of the heartache of displaced and stateless persons that she chronicled in her book Mani Che Poteggono (Hands That Protect). She had ample experience to draw from, representing the UNHCR at some of the world's most notorious refugee zones, including Sri Lanka, Georgia, Yemen, Somalia, Niger and Afghanistan. She also served in Greece when nearly a million refugees escaped to that country and began their trek through Europe in search of security and freedom.

Musicians Nour Eddine Fatty and Rashmi Bhatt brought far-away cultures to life through their musical performances. And actor Paolo Pesce Nanna spoke of his new charity to help victims of the Morocco earthquake.

Salameh Ashour, professor of Islamic culture, described how intolerance is not inherent - children have to be indoctrinated into prejudice. Raniero Ranieri, president of AVIS (Italian Association of Voluntary Blood Donors) Rome, stressed the importance of blood drives for securing the right to life for those needing transfusion. And Ikhtiar Gul Kaiam of Italy's Afghan community spoke of the plight of the women of his country.

The biggest right there is in human rights is the right to help."

December 10 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nation's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The preamble of the document points out that "recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world."

A recent interfaith panel, held in the Chapel of the Church of Scientology Pasadena, highlighted Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article #18. "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."

Leaders of diverse faiths shared their views and those attending realized how many of their core beliefs are held in common.

"It is absolutely necessary for faith leaders to come together," said one participant. "They are the compass for the rest of society."

"This event inspired me to be active in raising awareness about human rights," said another, "and to back that up with action to make it real."

Church of Scientology Pasadena public affairs director Karla Bartholomew hosted the program and said, "Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard stressed the rights of all religions to practice their faith in peace. He began the Creed of the Church of Scientology stating that 'all men of whatever race, color or creed were created with equal rights,' and that 'all men have inalienable rights to their own religious practices and their performance.' That is why we feel it is vital to bring diverse faiths together in support of religious freedom."

Scientology Joins the UN in Promoting Human Rights Day

In the preamble to the UDHR, the United Nations called upon all member countries to publicize its text and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."
