Montrose Celebrates Opening of New Ideal Scientology Mission of the Foothills

Scientology Missions form the vanguard of the Scientology religion, providing the full array of basic and introductory Scientology services and Scientology auditing (spiritual counseling). The Ideal Scientology Mission of the Foothills is designed to serve as the physical embodiment of Scientology Technology in helping all to attain spiritual freedom.

Mission Executive Director Stacy Kitchens welcomed all those joining for the momentous occasion. “Our Mission was established over 40 years ago with the goal to uplift and enrich the Foothills community, using the tools of Scientology,” she said. “We serve as a central point from which to emanate L. Ron Hubbard’s solutions for drug rehabilitation, drug prevention and campaigns to salvage every sector of society. All of this comes under the heading and responsibility of a Scientology Mission. Ms. Susana Porras, Community Organizer for the City of Pasadena, spoke of how, over the course of some 20 years of service, she has witnessed Scientologists demonstrate commitment to community across every sector—from drug prevention to disaster response. “The humanitarian campaigns sponsored by the Church are second to none,” she said. “The opening of this Ideal Scientology Mission of the Foothills is now one more example of this organization doing something that needs to be done. Visitors to the Foothills Mission are welcome to tour the Public Information Display, featuring multimedia presentations of the basic beliefs and practices of Dianetics and Scientology as well as the life and legacy of Founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The Truth About Overdose: The Need To Save Lives

Celebrating the Magic of Hidalgo on L. Ron Hubbard Way

These reeds are used to create the unique baskets, hats and flutes of his village, many of which were on display at the artisanal booths set up along L. Ron Hubbard Way. Traditional craftsmen also exhibited handmade jewelry. Local cooks served the traditional lamb "barbacoa" in pastries and hand-made tortillas.

When the folkloric ballet Corazones Valientes performed Mexican dances to traditional "huapango" music, those attending the festival joined them in a spontaneous celebration of the culture of home.

The Islas presented a plaque to the Church of Scientology Los Angeles in recognition of humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who believed, "A community that pulls together can make a better society for all." Young Performers Shine on L. Ron Hubbard Way

Scientology Church in Seattle Hosts Annual Block Party Celebrating National Night Out

The party featured a live band, a professional balloon artist, and a face painter for the kids. Seattle Police Department Crime Prevention supports National Night Out "to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite our communities." The annual event is designed to engage neighborhoods in local crime- and drug-abuse prevention activities.

"It's important to us to work with our police department to support anti-crime and drug prevention efforts," said Rev. Ann Pearce, Director of Public Affairs for the Seattle Church. "We are members of the city's block watch program for our area. This annual block party is also a great opportunity to renew friendships and meet new neighbors."

The Church-sponsored National Night Out was one of dozens held throughout the greater Seattle area and more than 130 throughout the state.

Despite the lighthearted tone of the community get-together, drug abuse is a critical problem in Seattle. Volunteers of the local chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World, the Church-supported drug education and prevention initiative, set up a booth making their Truth About Drugs educational materials available free of charge to all attending.

Drug prevention is vital in light of the recent spike in overdose deaths in Seattle. Downtown Seattle Association reports: "Overdose death counts continue to rise at a startling rate in Washington state. Between September 2022 and September 2023, Washington reported a 41 percent rise in drug overdose fatalities-the steepest increase in the United States. As the most populous county in the state, King County saw the highest number of overdose deaths, a majority of them concentrated in Seattle and downtown. In 2023, overdose deaths downtown represented more than 11 percent of overdose deaths within King County."

Volunteers with the Church make these materials available broadly with seminars, conferences, at fairs, festivals and other venues across Washington state.

"Prevention and education are critical to stopping the current drug crisis," said Dave Scattergood, Seattle-based ambassador to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World who is featured in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network. "Not only do drugs make it easier for people to commit crimes because their judgment is altered, but they have that need to make the money to get the drugs. So, the two really go hand in hand. I want to see a world where people can live in prosperity and freedom. And you can't do that when you're addicted to drugs."

According to United Nations Office on Drug Abuse and Crime,"For every dollar spent on prevention, at least ten can be saved in future health, social and crime costs."

Noting the role substance abuse plays in the disintegration of the social fabric, Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, "Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs."

A Swedish teacher confirmed that the problem goes beyond Denmark. He wants to reach children at his school with an effective anti-drug message. The volunteers helped him order the free Drug-Free World educator kit in Swedish from the Drug-Free World website.

The new mobile exhibit not only showcases the Truth About Drugs campaign's drug education and prevention materials, it also features brief documentaries from the Scientology Network showing humanitarians of diverse cultures and backgrounds who use these materials to counter drug abuse in communities in countries the world over.

Then the delegates reviewed their own goals and formulated plans and programs to create the change they want to see.

Promoting the Magic of Hollywood with a Summer Cleanup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Each month, Hollywood Village volunteers hold a neighborhood cleanup to keep Hollywood beautiful, safe, and clean. With visitors pouring into the city over the summer from around the world, this was not the season for the volunteers to take a vacation from their monthly initiative. Setting out from the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre, where they pick up their trash bags, shovels and brooms, volunteers took off to clean up the neighborhood.

To welcome those arriving in the neighborhood via the famous Hollywood Freeway, one team of volunteers tackled trash that had collected on a prominent offramp. Another team took on a go-to location for paparazzi and tourists wishing to catch a glimpse of celebrities dining at its trendy bistros.

After their cleanup, volunteers invite others to Set a Good Example and Safeguard and Improve Your Environment-principles featured in The Way to Happiness, a book of common-sense values that informs the initiative. They hand out copies of the booklet to those they meet and place boxes of The Way to Happiness in local takeouts, restaurants and shops to share with their customers.

"This is a new kind of moral code," says the coordinator of the project. "It was written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. It not only includes values common to people of all faiths and backgrounds, it even provides tools you can use to change your life. I have seen this book create miracles."

Some months, their activities include creating murals and other artistic projects. Each November, they hold a massive cleanup to show Hollywood at its best for the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade.

Anyone wishing to join the initiative is invited to do so. Hollywood Village is a partnership of the Church of Scientology, The Way to Happiness Foundation, and the Los Angeles Police Department. Festival on L. Ron Hubbard Way Empowers the Honduran Community

Ballet Folklorico HULA and the Children's Folkloric Ballet performed Honduran dances in traditional costumes, and the Punta Mania band entertained the crowd with the unique sounds of the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna people of the region.

A children's area included bouncy castles, inflatable games, traditional Honduran games and toys, along with ice cream, popcorn and cotton candy.

La Prensa described the festival as "a milestone in the integration and support of the Honduran diaspora in Los Angeles," and the consul general announced her plan to hold the fair twice a year in the same location. The Church of Scientology of Los Angeles will host the fairs as a service to the community.

An environmental project manager who operates under the Copenhagen Municipality spoke of her passion for urban green development. She explained the best plants for greening a city, what roses best promote insect survival and actions anyone may take to help create green oases-even in the center of town.

Next, a biodiversity expert made his passion clear by sharing his slogan: "Bee Engaged." His presentation brought home that the well-being of bees and other insects is vital to the survival of all life on Earth. In Europe, some 78 percent of native flora and 84 percent of crops are either partially or fully dependent on insects for pollination. Attendees were eager to learn about and participate in his upcoming projects.

The third guest speaker runs an organic farm and riding school in North Zealand. "There are no compromises when it comes to animal welfare," she said. Her unique approach to training people to ride and care for horses includes helping them learn to control the horses through communication, body movement, and clear intention rather than force.

The event was held in coordination with the Copenhagen chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation, whose mission is to reverse society's moral decay by restoring trust and honesty through widespread distribution of The Way to Happiness, a common-sense guide to better living written by author and humanitarian L. Rocking Out at a Drug-Free World Art and Music Festival at the Church of Scientology

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Church of Scientology Los Angeles and the local chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World organized a free outdoor summer concert and art show. Its purpose: to raise awareness about drugs and promote music and art as a drug-free alternative for a "natural high."

The concert featured Los Angeles-based popular acoustic-pop artist and singer/songwriter Nick Isham. Joined by a lineup of talented local musicians, Isham mixed his original songs live with his looper, combining beatboxing, guitar and vocals.

Graphic artists and photographers displayed their work along L. Ron Hubbard Way and vendors provided great food and refreshments.

The dark counterpoint to the upbeat concert and festival was the stark reality of the drug overdose epidemic affecting L.A. County and the rest of the country. The Los Angeles Times reports that despite a slight decline for the first time in a decade, more than 3,000 lost their lives to drug overdose in the county in 2023.

"I have seen firsthand how drugs destroy the lives of so many talented people," says Isham. "Drugs only hold you back. This is why I strongly advocate for kids to learn the truth about drugs. Knowing the facts, they can decide for themselves to live drug-free."

Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a volunteer-based nongovernmental organization (NGO) with a network of some 200 chapters around the world, recently earned consultative status to the United Nations.

* Helping to pass legislation that requires informed consent before ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) can be administered. ECT is documented to cause brain damage and long-term memory loss. Prior to the legislation CCHR helped push through, those labeled 'mentally ill' could be forced to receive ECT in Florida without their consent. ECT administers up to 460 volts of electricity to a patient's brain.

* Exposing gross patient abuse at Anclote Manor Psychiatric Hospital. Judges gave delinquent teenage boys two choices: face prosecution for felonies resulting in a permanent record or be committed to Anclote Manor Psychiatric Hospital to receive treatment. CCHR investigated the hospital and exposed gross violations of the rights and safety of the children, including the use of insulin shock and wrapping patients in freezing sheets. CCHR held public demonstrations depicting the abuses that were leaked to CCHR by patients and staff, amassing public attention and outrage that ultimately led to the facility's closure.

* Executing a public information campaign to help parents protect their children from involuntary psychiatric commitment. CCHR organized workshops where experts on the Baker Act, the notorious Florida law that enables involuntary commitment, trained attorneys and patient advocates on how to get people released from facilities where they are held against their will.

CCHR also educates the community on the history, practices and crimes of psychiatry with its Psychiatry: An Industry of Death Museum at the group's Clearwater headquarters at 109 N. Fort Harrison Ave. in downtown Clearwater, Florida.

Communication Bridges Differences at the 9th Annual Interfaith Solidarity March

The driving force behind the march and the movement is Dr. Arik Greenberg, founder and president of the Institute for Religious Tolerance, Peace and Justice (IRTPJ), which sponsors the annual activity. Rev. Olivia McDuff of the Church of Scientology International, who served as master of ceremonies, acknowledged Dr. Greenburg for his commitment to bringing the Los Angeles interfaith community together in the name of freedom of worship or belief while rejecting all efforts to foment conflict and hatred among faiths.

Marchers gathered at St. Basil Catholic for a rally before taking off down Wilshire Blvd. to promote their cause. "Step outside your comfort zone," was the challenge delivered by IRTPJ board member Mohammed Khan. He urged those marching to seek out and walk with someone they didn't already know - someone of another faith than their own - and to learn something about that person and from that person: What they are concerned about, what is important to them. That is the best way to break down walls and gain understanding, he said.

As in other marches, a megaphone-wielding leader urged those participating to shout slogans. But in this march, the message was one of uniting, not protest, with the purpose of encouraging all Angelenos to work together for peace.

Understanding among diverse communities is particularly important when there are false narratives in circulation. Aziza Hasan, Executive Director of New Ground: A Muslim-Jewish Partnership for Change, spoke of just how insidious false information can be. She shared her story of the intense backlash she and other Muslims experienced after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

"As Americans and Muslims, we were upset and grieving along with everyone else," she said, but because of their faith and ethnicity, Muslims became the target. She described how her interfaith colleagues "made a human chain around us...they were there for us when it mattered." They demanded people treat Muslim Americans with respect. The support she received from people of various faiths bolstered her and affirmed the importance of the interfaith movement.

At the end of the march, Father Alexei Smith, Ecumenical and Interreligious Officer of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, moderated a panel discussion on the crisis in Gaza and Israel.

Fr. Smith explained why he is not working for "tolerance." Tolerance implies putting up with someone or something. "We're certainly much beyond merely putting up with other religions," he said "and we should allow ourselves to be open to other faiths. Allow them to nurture us as we nurture and encourage them."

Although no consensus was reached with the panel discussion, Fr. Smith was not discouraged. "We don't always agree. But we must not let our disagreements prevent us from working together for the greater good," he said.

The Los Angeles Interfaith March for Peace and Justice coalition is the largest coalition of interfaith marches in the world. The Institute for Religious Tolerance, Peace, and Justice serves as the coalition's international lead. Dr. Greenburg's mission for the march is "to promote religious tolerance, interfaith dialogue, and education about religions of the world as a pathway to world peace."

That message may be more relevant today than ever before.

Conference on Freedom of Religion or Belief Hosted by Church of Scientology of Rome Points to Solutions for Strengthening This Right Internationally

ROME, Italy /ScoopCloud/ -- University professors, government officials, parliamentarians and religious representatives gathered at the Church of Scientology in Rome last month for an international conference on freedom of religion or belief in Italy, throughout Europe and the world.

Entitled Freedom of Belief and Religious Recognition: Current State and Perspectives, the conference was organized in collaboration with the Observatory of Religious Entities, Ecclesiastical Patrimony, and Nonprofit Organizations of the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli of Naples, Italy.

Some European Union member states have drawn criticism for neglecting freedom of religion or belief within their borders. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom reports that this neglect includes "restrictions on religious clothing, ritual slaughter, and so-called 'sects,' along with laws that target Muslims [and] impact Jews...." It documents that "individuals from religious minority groups, particularly Jews and Muslims, reportedly are increasingly choosing to emigrate."

It was against this backdrop that the conference took place.

"Freedom of religion and respect for the beliefs of others are fundamental principles of the Church of Scientology as affirmed in the Creed of the Church of Scientology by Founder L. Ron Hubbard," said Lina Pirotta, representative of the Church of Scientology in Italy, in her welcome address to conference participants.

The conference consisted of two international round tables and a series of panel discussions hosted by experts in the field of religion who explored different aspects of religious freedom and the importance of protecting this right with emphasis on the nations of the European Union.

The first panel brought together Senator Lorena Rios Cuéllar, former director of religious affairs for the Colombian government; Professor José Daniel Pelayo Olmedo, deputy director general for coordination and promotion of religious freedom of the Spanish government; and Dr. Gary Vachicouras, from the Institute for Postgraduate Studies in Orthodox Theology in Geneva. Panelists described the current situation regarding freedom of religion in Colombia, Spain and Greece.

A secular state, Colombia's constitution guarantees freedom of religion individually and collectively. In Spain, there are 26,000 religious groups registered in the Register of Religious Bodies. Dr. Vachicouras emphasized that by making the principle of freedom of belief a priority or standard, many conflicts and problems arising from plurality can be resolved.

The second panel included U.S. attorney and constitutional expert Austin Hepworth; Prof. Juan Ferreiro Galguera, professor of church law at the University of Oviedo, Spain; and Prof. Vincent Berger, former jurisconsult at the European Court of Human Rights.

Austin Hepworth described how the principle of religious freedom is applied in the United States, including a mention of the 1948 U.S.-Italy Friendship Treaty, which established a relationship between the two countries based on the shared values of democracy, freedom, and respect for religious and human rights.

Prof. Ferreiro Galguera emphasized the difference between a secular state such as Spain, which respects and cooperates with religious communities, and secularist states such as France, which interfere with these rights. He emphasized that a state's tolerance of a religious denomination is not a substitute for the full religious recognition of that faith.

Professor Berger described remedies for limitations of religious freedom and problems of intolerance offered by the European Court of Human Rights when traditional channels fail.

The conference also included a discussion and analysis of religious freedom in Italy. Speakers included Maria D'Arienzo, professor of ecclesiastical, canonical, and confessional law at the University Federico II of Naples; Gianfranco Macrì, professor of intercultural law at the University of Salerno; and Francesco Sorvillo, associate professor of at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli.

Their consensus was that Italy's current constitutional views on religious freedom are dated. Adopted in 1929, when Italy was still a kingdom, the law predates Italy's republican democracy and the pluralism in Italy today.

The second section of this panel featured Dr. Marco Respinti, editor-in-chief of Bitterwinter.org and the Journal of CESNUR; Dr. Nader Akkad, religious affairs advisor of the Grand Mosque of Rome; and Mother Anastasia, legal advisor of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese.

Mother Anastasia spoke of the hardships resulting from 13 years of efforts to obtain recognition in Italy for the Romanian Orthodox Church. Dr. Respinti described the impact of media on religion and how media outlets perceive religiosity. Dr. Akkad emphasized the importance of dialogue among members of different faiths.

The overriding consensus that emerged from the conference was the need for greater attention to religious freedom and measures to protect this freedom for individuals and organizations in Europe and throughout the world.

Volunteers Promote Drug-Free Living at the Annual Xtrail Lavaux Race in Lausanne

LAUSANNE, Switzerland /ScoopCloud/ -- Combining a love of sports with a commitment to help, volunteers from the Dites Non à la Drogue, Oui à la Vie (Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life) Association competed in the 5, 10, and 20 km Xtrail Lavaux races in May. The races are organized and produced by the Jeune Chambre, the local Junior Chamber of Commerce, to provide a way for people to run for a good cause while promoting the region. There are races for all ages and abilities. Runners race through the meandering paths of local terraced vineyards overlooking Lake Geneva. This chapter of Dites Non à la Drogue is an affiliate of Foundation for a Drug-Free World supported by the Church of Scientology Lausanne.

Dites Non à la Drogue volunteers are a familiar sight at this and other local races. Wearing their signature teal T-shirts, they set a living example of the benefits of active, drug-free living.

Volunteers are particularly concerned about the country's growing problem of crack cocaine.

"Since 2022, Switzerland has experienced a flood of concentrated and cheap cocaine," according to Addiction Switzerland's deputy director. "Part of this product is sold as crack. People can be seen openly taking drugs in several cantons. Geneva is the hardest hit."

Foundation for a Drug-Free World's Truth About Cocaine booklet describes the drug as "one of the most dangerous drugs known to man," because "once a person begins taking the drug, it has proven almost impossible to become free of its grip physically and mentally."

This shows the importance of youth knowing the truth about drugs. With this knowledge, they are far less likely to experiment with these substances.

Drug-Free World and the Church of Scientology Denmark Set Their Sights on ‘Winning the Race’ for a Drug-Free Country

COPENHAGEN, Denmark /ScoopCloud/ -- As record numbers, including Denmark's King Frederik, Queen Mary and their family, raced through the heart of Copenhagen in May on the city's annual Royal Run, Drug-Free World volunteers from the Church of Scientology of Denmark cheered them on while promoting active, drug-free living. They handed out thousands of fact-based Truth About Drugs educational booklets to runners and fans.

The volunteers were enthusiastic about the results they accomplished that day.

"We had so much positive feedback," said the campaign coordinator. "We handed a booklet to a teacher, who came back to talk to the volunteer and asked for 50 copies to give to her teenage students. Two others stopped their car to ask the volunteers for booklets to give to their friends who use drugs. Parents took the booklets and immediately started reading them to their children. So many people came by to thank us for what we are doing. There were stories like this throughout the day."

Although Denmark has fewer drug problems than many European countries, according to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), young people throughout the continent "now have access to an increasingly wide range of substances and are using them in combination with alcohol." What's more, Euronews reports Danish teens as young as 12 are experimenting with and getting hooked on highly addictive and dangerous painkillers.

Drug-Free World volunteers are "racing" to reach youth before the dealers do. Young people presented with the facts about drugs are far more likely not to use them. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, states: "For every dollar spent on prevention, at least ten can be saved in future health, social and crime costs."

Noting the role substance abuse plays in the disintegration of the social fabric, Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, "Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs."

Foundation for a Drug-Free World was formed in 2006 to serve as a primary distributor of educational materials and to develop new materials to meet the challenge of continually changing drug trends. The Foundation has grown to a network of some 200 chapters around the world.
