WHY THIS BOOK MATTERS NOW

Mental health has become one of the most pressing issues of our time. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in the U.S. experiences a mental health challenge each year. And, a recent survey by the American Psychological Association (API) Stress In America found that 77 percent of adults report the future of the nation as a significant source of stress, followed by the economy (73 percent). Significantly, among faith communities, stigma and misconceptions often prevent individuals from seeking the help they need.

“I Need A Minute” bridges the gap between faith and mental health, offering hope and practical strategies to readers who feel caught between these two worlds. It reminds readers that caring for their mental health is not a sign of spiritual weakness but a profound act of stewardship over the life God has entrusted to them.

Groundbreaking New Book Issues Call to Action on Racial Schism Among Black and White Women Following 2024 Election

WILMINGTON, Del., Jan. 14, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — As Black women and White women in the United States struggle to redefine the “Sisterhood” – a bond of shared identity and collective empowerment – in the face of the clear demarcation of who voted for whom in the 2024 Presidential election, renowned author and minister Rev. Dr. A’Shellarien Addison announces the release of “This Is Not That: Black Women and White Women Breaking the Chains of Religious, Racial, and Psychological Violence in the Rise of Kamala Harris” (ISBN 979-8344040080; Desakajo Publishing). This timely work delves into the history and impact of societal, religious, and psychological structures that have sown division between Black and White women in the United States for generations—and offers a transformative blueprint for unity through “Spiritual Sisterhood.”

This Is Not That by Rev. Dr. A'shellarien Addison
IMAGE caption: Cover of “This Is Not That: Black Women and White Women Breaking the Chains of Religious, Racial, and Psychological Violence in the Rise of Kamala Harris.”

“This is a call to embrace true Spiritual Sisterhood – a sacred, safe space where women come together to connect, affirm, and uplift one another,” says Rev. Dr. A’Shellarien. “It’s time to move beyond the dysfunction that has limited us, to see each other fully, and to honor the strength that resides in unity.”

“This Is Not That” arrives at a pivotal moment. It challenges women to recognize and confront the barriers that have historically hindered the Sisterhood, from the subjugation perpetuated by patriarchal religious systems to the racial divides reinforced by societal constructs dating back to chattel slavery. Each chapter unfolds a journey through this landscape, exploring how women’s experiences and perceptions of self-worth have been shaped—and how they can be healed.

Rev. Dr. A’Shellarien writes with conviction, reflecting on the rise of Kamala Harris as a moment of unprecedented opportunity for women across racial and cultural divides to come together. The author sees Harris’s leadership as a living example of the possibility of transcending traditional barriers through authentic connection, support, and shared vision.

According to the author, women are called not only to lead but to cultivate “followship” – a mutual commitment that honors each other’s inherent worth. This book challenges Black and White women to set aside old narratives of division, to reclaim their voices, and to act in unity.

Through seven illuminating sections, readers are guided to understand the roots of separation, recognize the sacred strength within a true Sisterhood, and embrace a vision of collective empowerment:

  1. Let Us Make Humankind
  2. Let Us Make Man
  3. Let Us Make White Woman
  4. Let Us Make Black Woman
  5. Let Us Make An Intersection
  6. Let Us Make A Change
  7. Let Us Make A Difference

“This Is Not That” is a timely call to action for women of all backgrounds to reclaim their power, voice, and vision, paving the way for a future where they lead side by side in harmony. It is a must-read for anyone invested in building a more equitable, inclusive, and empowered society.

“This Is Not That: Black Women and White Women Breaking the Chains of Religious, Racial, and Psychological Violence in the Rise of Kamala Harris” is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and at https://mybook.to/DrAShellarienempowers.

Network Connect Recognizes ADHD Awareness Month

WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 29, 2024 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — One of Wilmington, Delaware’s leading community non-profit organizations, Network Connect, understands the importance of bringing attention to ADHD during October. “ADHD is often misunderstood, leading to stigma and isolation for those affected,” says community connector and CEO of Network Connect Cierra Hall-Hipkins. As part of her work for Network Connect, she sees people who are struggling to focus and achieve their goals and helps them establish supportive networks.

Photo caption: The Team of Network Connect and CEO Cierra Hall-Hipkins.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is not an illness, it is a condition that can cause many challenges. For those who are suffering, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, chemicals in the brain are unable to relay messages effectively, leading to unconventional behaviors. It falls under the umbrella of neurodivergence, a newly recognized spectrum of human experience that includes autism, dyslexia, and ADHD.

People with ADHD have problems with executive functions – managing time, organizing information, memory, and emotional regulation. It is often seen in school settings where children have difficulty sitting still for an entire class period, but also shows up in adulthood where things like organizing bill payments can become overwhelming.

Most people with ADHD carry a higher risk of addictive behavior. Overstimulation can cause them to rely heavily on substances such as cannabis and alcohol to quiet the racing thoughts. They have other disorders such as anxiety, depression, or obesity. Sometimes, ADHD will present as perfectionism, where people overcompensate for their impulsivity by nitpicking every little thing. Girls with ADHD have a higher risk of eating disorders and self harm activities resulting from their inability to conform to “normal” standards of behavior. It is not always “bouncing off the wall,” though sometimes it is.

Another common misconception is that ADHD is not a problem of intelligence. People with ADHD who have successfully graduated from Harvard and Brown talk about staying up all night to study and having to put in much more work than their peers. They struggle to manage their time effectively, and while they may get good grades or finish projects, there is often a chaotic approach that makes things incredibly difficult.

If you suffer from ADHD, having positive self-talk is important. You should not allow yourself to be overly critical because of challenges you may face with “adulting” or studying. It is important to give yourself grace, and not to blame yourself for something that is outside of your control.

“During ADHD Awareness Month, we encourage open conversations and education to help dispel myths and foster a supportive environment for individuals living with this condition,” Hall-Hipkins explains. She has seen a number of community members overcome hurdles by investing time and energy in connecting people to resources that can help.

Network Connect is a Delaware based organization that fosters community by bringing people together. Since 2019, Network Connect has provided several key initiatives aimed at forging relationships between diverse groups of people.

Community Well-being Ambassadors connect community members to resources, providing trauma-informed engagement opportunities. Future Culture Creators is a highly effective youth employment program that was able to survive and thrive through the pandemic. The Reverse Adverse Childhood Experiences program (RACE) promotes early intervention of ACEs through universal screening of Delaware youth and families. Each of these programs provides solutions for people suffering from ADHD.

Whether providing skills for youth to get ahead, or social supports for adults to better manage their conditions, Network Connect brings people together in ways that improve lives across the state.
