Paragon Gives Hosts Pearl Buck Preschool’s Family Christmas Carnival

PORTLAND, Ore. /ScoopCloud/ -- Paragon Gives, a Paragon BioTeck, Inc. initiative, announces their annual holiday event, "A Night to Remember," for the children and families of Eugene Pearl Buck Preschool and Family Supports Program. "A Night to Remember" is a fun and festive holiday event with this year's theme being a Christmas Carnival, which will bring a touch of holiday cheer, through carnival games, a bounce house, a photo booth with Santa and Mrs. Claus and much more.

Paragon Gives invites the children and families of the Pearl Buck Preschool, a tuition-free Pearl Buck Center program providing education and early-age development tailored to families led by parents with cognitive challenges, to join them for this year's "A Night to Remember." The Christmas Carnival themed night will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Pearl Buck Center located at 3690 West 1st Ave.

Paragon Gives Announces Call for 2020 Koch Kellan Scholarship Applicants

PORTLAND, Ore. /ScoopCloud/ -- Paragon Gives, a Paragon BioTeck, Inc. initiative, is excited to announce a call for applications for the 2020 Koch Kellan Scholarship worth $10,000. This annual scholarship is awarded to one (1) outstanding graduate medical student committed to pursuing a clinical, teaching or research career in ophthalmology.

"Through the Koch Kellan Scholarship program, Paragon Gives cultivates a next-generation leader in ophthalmology," stated Patrick Witham, President & CEO of Paragon BioTeck. "By recognizing the talents and commitments of an ophthalmic innovator each year, we help build a stronger profession and further Paragon's mission to continually elevate the standard of eye care."

Applications will be reviewed by scholarship namesakes and industry giants: Paul S. Koch, MD, and Robert E. Kellan, MD, as well as additional members of the Scholarship Review Committee. Once selected, the Koch Kellan Scholar will be invited to attend the 2020 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, to be held on May 15-19. The Scholar will be formally presented with the award during the ASCRS conference and will interact with Paragon representatives and ophthalmologists to learn more about the industry.

"Those for whom ophthalmology is truly a calling; those for whom it would be impossible to pursue any other specialty; and those who are able to convey this personal connection in a captivating matter-these are the students whom the Koch Kellan Scholarship is intended to support," said Patrick Witham, founder of the Koch Kellan scholarship. "It is our honor and pleasure to mark the professional contributions of Doctors Koch and Kellan by continuing their long legacy of mentorship in our field."

The 2019 Koch Kellan Scholarship recipient, Mohima Sanyal, was a third-year student at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She attends medical school with the personal ambition to apply her interdisciplinary perspectives towards providing excellent, accessible medical care to patients. She believes that access to "excellent healthcare is fundamental to a just society and that it is critical that we engage with community-specific visual health needs and contribute to innovative, culturally-informed solutions." Her projects involve creating a more inclusive, theoretically-grounded approach to visual care research, applying the power of narrative medicine to mitigate implicit bias in physician practice, and eliminating language and insurance barriers for care.

Mohima Sanyal Named 2019 Koch Kellan Scholar

"Mohima's credentials reflect a commitment to science and to public health. She plans to study ophthalmology and has already shown an interest and an aptitude for that specialty," said Paul Koch MD, one of the doctors whose namesake is attached to the scholarship. "She has the background to apply what she learns in the vast world of underserved populations both here and abroad. If she continues along this path, she will be a valuable teacher and influencer in the world of medicine."

Ms. Sanyal has applied her interdisciplinary perspectives through her work with the Primary Open-Angle African-American Glaucoma Genetics Study (a National Institutes of Health study), by giving back to her community with the Give Kids Sight Day as a volunteer coordinator, and through various avenues related to ophthalmology.

"I was extremely impressed with the extraordinary measures she has taken in her pursuit to achieve a global perspective of how best to address visual-related health needs. Her MD-Master of Public Health degree combined with her MSc in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology will give her the necessary credentials and those along with her enviable selfless attitude will guarantee her a leadership role in her field," said Robert Kellan MD, the scholarship's other namesake.

Paragon Gives will formally present the Koch Kellan Scholarship to Ms. Sanyal at a breakfast attended by Drs. Koch and Kellan, and Paragon CEO, Patrick Witham, during the annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, held May 5, 2019 in San Diego, California.

Alejandro Arboleda Named 2018 Koch Kellan Scholar

Witham added, "While the contributions they have made to restoring sight in and of itself is remarkable, it is their vision that they so generously share that will leave their indelible mark on countless lives well beyond our time."

Both Robert Kellan, MD and Paul Koch, MD, spoke of Mr. Arboleda's determination to pursue a career in ophthalmology. "While many students imagine how things ought to be and wonder why not, Alejandro stepped out where few others do. He took actions to accomplish changes in the world around him. I have no doubt he has the temperament and the drive to accomplish many wonderful things and change our world as we know it," Koch stated.

Mr. Arboleda is a third-year student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His initial studies in biomedical engineering drove his interest in ophthalmology. "I was not satisfied by simply creating novel devices, I wanted to be the physician with the experience to face problems and invent better solutions to treat patients," he said. After collaborating with researchers in France during his tenure as a Fulbright Fellow, he began a photodynamic therapy (PDT) project.

Kellan noted Mr. Arboleda's passion for caring for those in need, "Alejandro clearly demonstrates his compassion to make the world a better place by his eager participation in ophthalmic mission trips to South America and his tireless efforts to bring visual rehabilitation to the needy."

Mr. Arboledo expressed how these experiences reaffirmed his dedication to medicine, "I have followed each patient's journey and am humbled by their reactions to their recovery."

Upon receipt of the award, Mr. Arboleda discussed how the scholarship mirrors both his commitment to driving innovation and serving the population, "I feel very honored to receive the Koch Kellan Scholarship. I look forward to dedicating my career to the field of ophthalmology where there is so much space for advancement and serving diverse patient populations. I will continue to work hard so that my contributions to the field of ophthalmology honor the spirit of this award."

Xinxin Zhang Named 2017 Koch Kellan Scholar

Both Robert Kellan, MD, and Paul Koch, MD, are impressed by Ms. Zhang's early dedication to ophthalmology and her strong desire to serve underprivileged populations. "Xinxin exemplifies the values of Paragon BioTeck and this scholarship through her volunteer work at free clinics, similar to those that supported her and her family when they first moved to the U.S. from China, as well as the research project she undertook in her country of origin. She will be a great future leader of ophthalmology," Koch stated.

Xinxin Zhang is a third-year student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her experiences with poverty as a child exposed her to many treatable eye conditions at an early age and sparked her desire to serve. Ms. Zhang's passion for ophthalmology was cemented during a research project focused on bringing technological diagnostic advances to some of China's poorest provinces, where high rates of preventable blindness occur primarily due to lack of screening opportunities. After spending last year researching dry eye disease and leading UNC's student-run ophthalmology clinic, Ms. Zhang is committed to bringing ophthalmological innovation to the rural areas of the state she has come to call home.

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 10%, is contraindicated in patients with hypertension or thyrotoxicosis, as well as in pediatric patients under the age of one due to the increased risk of systemic toxicity. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 2.5%, should not be used in these patients. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 10% and 2.5% is for topical ophthalmic use only, and not for injection.

Serious cardiovascular reactions, including ventricular arrhythmias and myocardial infarctions, some fatal, and significant elevations in blood pressure have been reported. Caution is advised in pediatric patients less than five years of age and in patients with elevated blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or hyperthyroidism. Blood pressure should be monitored in patients with cardiovascular or endocrine disease. Rebound miosis has been reported one day after instillation.

Ocular adverse reactions include eye pain and stinging on instillation, temporary blurred vision and photophobia. Cardiovascular adverse reactions include increase in blood pressure, syncope, myocardial infarction, tachycardia, arrhythmia and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
