Celebrating the Magic of Hidalgo on L. Ron Hubbard Way

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- L. Ron Hubbard Way was transformed into a cultural festival last week, bringing the rich heritage of Hildago to life in East Hollywood. The celebration showcased the vibrant crafts, traditional music, colorful costumes, dancing and authentic cuisine of the magical villages in the green mountains of Hidalgo, the state named for Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, known as the father of Mexican independence.

Siblings Justina and José Islas organized the festival. They brought cultural associations and nonprofits on board, including Unidos Por Una Misma Causa (United for the Same Cause), which advocates for human rights and drug prevention, Unidos Por Hidalgo (United for Hidalgo) and Sur California Hidalguenses (Southern California Hidalguans). They invited the Los Angeles Latino community to join them in this celebration of Hidalgo culture and traditions.

José spoke fondly of his birthplace, Acaxochitlán, named a "Magical Village" in 2023. Acaxochitlán means "a place where reeds grow" in Nahuatl, the Aztec language of the region's Indigenous people. These reeds are used to create the unique baskets, hats and flutes of his village, many of which were on display at the artisanal booths set up along L. Ron Hubbard Way. Traditional craftsmen also exhibited handmade jewelry. Local cooks served the traditional lamb "barbacoa" in pastries and hand-made tortillas.

When the folkloric ballet Corazones Valientes performed Mexican dances to traditional "huapango" music, those attending the festival joined them in a spontaneous celebration of the culture of home.

The Islas presented a plaque to the Church of Scientology Los Angeles in recognition of humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who believed, "A community that pulls together can make a better society for all." This philosophy inspires the Church of Scientology Los Angeles to bring the diverse Los Angeles cultures and communities together to achieve shared humanitarian goals.

Young Performers Shine on L. Ron Hubbard Way

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Young members of Inner-City Shakespeare Ensemble took a break from the Bard to perform a whimsical children's play. The production, organized by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles, was part of the family-friendly summer festival held on L. Ron Hubbard Way.

This play featured children as young as 5 in vignettes based on famous children's fables and fairy tales that promote traditional morals. Characters included the Three Little Pigs with their lesson that it takes hard work and foresight to prepare for future challenges. And the Frog Prince brought home the importance of keeping promises and not judging others by their appearance.

For more than a decade, Dr. Melanie Curtis-Andrews and the Inner-City Shakespeare Ensemble have introduced inner-city youth from diverse cultural and social backgrounds to the theater through the timeless plays of William Shakespeare. But the ensemble also rocked the house this May with their performance of Grease and presents blow-away Christmas shows at the Church of Scientology yearly lighting ceremonies that launch their holiday festival and annual toy drive.

Dr. Curtis-Andrews credits L. Ron Hubbard's Study Technology for enhancing the confidence and skill of her ensemble. "People are often amazed to find that our young company can effectively perform the works of the Bard with such grace and understanding. Clearly, it is a challenge to do so with the varying educational and intellectual ability of our diverse casts. The key to our success is the use of L. Ron Hubbard's Study Tech."

L. Ron Hubbard recognized the failings of the educational system and developed an actual technology anyone can learn and use to master any subject. Festival on L. Ron Hubbard Way Empowers the Honduran Community

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- More than 1,000 attended the first Honduran Fair for Entrepreneurs, held in East Hollywood earlier this month on L. Ron Hubbard Way. It was organized by the Honduras Consulate and hosted by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles with the purpose:

* To provide a venue for Honduran businesses to promote their products and services

* To furnish a job exchange and information on consular services, free health care and legal resources

* To build stronger relationships within the Honduran diaspora

* And to keep the culture, food, and traditions of Honduras alive.

The Festival provided a venue for some 50 Honduran entrepreneurs to promote their merchandise and services.

Ballet Folklorico HULA and the Children's Folkloric Ballet performed Honduran dances in traditional costumes, and the Punta Mania band entertained the crowd with the unique sounds of the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna people of the region.

A children's area included bouncy castles, inflatable games, traditional Honduran games and toys, along with ice cream, popcorn and cotton candy.

La Prensa described the festival as "a milestone in the integration and support of the Honduran diaspora in Los Angeles," and the consul general announced her plan to hold the fair twice a year in the same location. The Church of Scientology of Los Angeles will host the fairs as a service to the community.

Rocking Out at a Drug-Free World Art and Music Festival at the Church of Scientology

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Church of Scientology Los Angeles and the local chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World organized a free outdoor summer concert and art show. Its purpose: to raise awareness about drugs and promote music and art as a drug-free alternative for a "natural high."

The concert featured Los Angeles-based popular acoustic-pop artist and singer/songwriter Nick Isham. Joined by a lineup of talented local musicians, Isham mixed his original songs live with his looper, combining beatboxing, guitar and vocals.

Graphic artists and photographers displayed their work along L. Ron Hubbard Way and vendors provided great food and refreshments.

The dark counterpoint to the upbeat concert and festival was the stark reality of the drug overdose epidemic affecting L.A. County and the rest of the country. The Los Angeles Times reports that despite a slight decline for the first time in a decade, more than 3,000 lost their lives to drug overdose in the county in 2023.

"I have seen firsthand how drugs destroy the lives of so many talented people," says Isham. "Drugs only hold you back. This is why I strongly advocate for kids to learn the truth about drugs. Knowing the facts, they can decide for themselves to live drug-free."

Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a volunteer-based nongovernmental organization (NGO) with a network of some 200 chapters around the world, recently earned consultative status to the United Nations.

Church of Scientology Los Angeles Memorial Day Event Launches a Season of Programs for the East Hollywood Community

Memorial Day also signals the start of the summer season, and Church spaces were transformed into a family fun day, complete with face painting, patriotic arts and crafts, a water slide, a bouncy castle, mural painting, and donut-eating contests. There was traditional BBQ and entertainment, including an Americana concert, a performance by indie rock band WWD HAN and a magic show.

Church of Scientology Hosts Inner City Shakespeare Ensemble: Young Actors Present Blow-Away Performance of Their PG Version of ‘Grease’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- An ensemble of 22 kids proved "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay" with their high-energy rendition of Grease [PG] at the Church of Scientology Los Angeles last week, produced and directed by Inner City Shakespeare Ensemble Founder and Executive Director Dr. Melanie Andrews.

The young artists channeled the spirit and enthusiasm of the 1950s and the movie's famous cast while adding their own swagger and unique style.

Inner City Shakespeare Ensemble (ICSE) is a subsidiary of the InnerCity Performing Arts nonprofit. It introduces at-risk students to the world of theater.

In addition to renditions of Shakespeare classics, including Twelfth Night, Othello and Taming of the Shrew the ensemble has also performed such Broadway musicals as For Colored Girls and Positive Secrets.

ICSE was in rehearsal for their production of Romeo and Juliette just as the pandemic hit. In the true spirit of "the show must go on" they transitioned to the internet. Dr. Andrews decided to run the rehearsals online via Zoom. They recorded the show live, with backdrops and costumes, and this unique production is available on YouTube.

Dr. Andrews is dedicated to ensuring inner-city kids have the opportunity to learn, perform, and be introduced to Shakespeare and the world theater. The Church of Scientology Los Angeles shares her passion for providing opportunity to all young Angelenos. Inspired by Scientology Founder L. The term means "The Night of the Moon" in Urdu and it signals the sighting of the crescent moon that ends a month of prayer, fasting and spiritual reflection.

Chaand Raat is celebrated in Southern Asia with massive street festivals, food and music. And the celebration on L. Ron Hubbard Way, true to this tradition, was filled with booths offering authentic Bangladeshi cuisine, henna tattoo stations and artisan shops displaying traditional clothing and jewelry.

Music, conversations and laughter filled the street, creating a bright holiday atmosphere late into the night.

Los Angeles is a county of great cultural diversity, with residents from some 140 nationalities speaking more than 80 different languages, including an estimated 20,000 Bangladeshi.

Record Crowd Celebrates Easter at Church of Scientology Los Angeles with a 25,000-Egg Hunt

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Despite predictions of rain over Easter weekend, Sunday's annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 31 proceeded undeterred. Staff and volunteers from the Church of Scientology Los Angeles were prepared no matter the weather, with tents erected in case of a storm. But the afternoon was blessed with blue skies when nearly 7,000 neighbors joined the fun on L. Ron Hubbard Way for the annual Church of Scientology Easter celebration.

Thousands of kids lined up and raced for 25,000 Easter eggs, including 24 "golden" eggs. Those finding "gold" could trade them in for a special Easter basket, a stuffed Easter bunny, and other treats. A separate race was organized for the toddlers, ensuring that every child was a winner.

Throughout the afternoon, children enjoyed a variety of activities and attractions, including:

* Face painting

* Egg decorating and arts and crafts booths

* Donut-eating competitions

* All-you-can-eat popcorn and cotton candy

Despite predictions of rain over Easter weekend, Sunday's annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 31 proceeded undeterred. Matthew Perry's tragic demise has spotlighted the urgent need for public education on the potential risks of off-label use of this drug. Despite his long history of drug abuse, he was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy-a procedure that has never been approved by the FDA.

Medscape, an online resource for physicians and healthcare professionals, reports, "The number of ketamine clinics has risen dramatically, with little to no oversight," and "this comes at a time when recreational use of ketamine, known on the street as 'Special K,' is rising, and reports to poison control centers and drug seizures by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) are climbing."

According to USA Today, experts such as Dr. Peter Grinspoon of Massachusetts General Hospital have revealed inherent dangers of ketamine therapy, particularly for individuals with a history of substance abuse. Dr. Fahmi Farah, a cardiologist in Fort Worth, Texas, says ketamine is "not a normal drug to be used by a regular person at all." She emphasized ketamine is traditionally used in controlled medical settings such as operating rooms. It is not authorized for treatment of depression, anxiety and drug dependency.

The New York Times reports that while "drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of an opioid, buprenorphine" contributed to Perry's death, the autopsy "ascribed his death primarily to 'the acute effects of ketamine.'"

Citizen's Commission on Human Rights International has called for an inquiry into the risks of ketamine, often dispensed through unregulated ketamine infusion clinics.

One of Tlaxcaltecas USA's most important projects is to arrange for elderly men and women living in Mexico to visit their families in America. They help those qualified to procure visitor visas and arrange group flights to Los Angeles for these family reunions.

Representatives of Tlaxcaltecas USA met the elderly family members at Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City at 6 a.m. on Saturday, January 17. They delivered their visas, and at 9 a.m. their flight left for Los Angeles International Airport. Meanwhile, seven families gathered at the Church of Scientology Los Angeles, some from as far away as San Francisco, Denver and Seattle. One of the families had not seen one another for more than 25 years.

150 Weekly Food Drives at the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles to Help Local Families Cope

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- With inflation driving up food prices and some 30 percent of Los Angeles County families now experiencing food insecurity, Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles dedicate their Saturday mornings to helping fellow Angelenos cope.

According to a study by USC Dornsife Public Exchange, "nearly a third of Angelenos suffer from food insecurity-the highest rates since the COVID-19 pandemic began." The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank reports: "Hunger affects all groups of people regardless of education level, employment status or ethnicity. Due to the soaring costs of both housing and transportation in Los Angeles County, many people who work-even families with two incomes-often can't make ends meet or put enough good food on the table."

To help local families deal with this, every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Scientology Volunteer Ministers set up their bright yellow tents in the Church parking lot at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and L. Ron Hubbard Way, a few blocks west of the Vermont Ave. Metro station.

Cars pull up and pop their trunks or roll down the windows, and the Volunteer Ministers place boxes or bags of food inside. Over the past 150 weeks, they have placed packages of food in some 45,000 trucks, and carts or baskets of those arriving on foot.

The Church also organizes seasonal giveaways such as turkeys at Thanksgiving and gifts for local children at Christmas.

Church of Scientology Los Angeles Hosts a Traditional Christmas Celebration for the Latin Community

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Dozens of members of the East Hollywood Oaxacan community walked down L. Ron Hubbard Way this week, dressed in traditional garb, in the third annual La Posada hosted by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles.

La Posada, meaning "The Inn" in Spanish, is a religious tradition dating to the 16th century. In the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, for nine days beginning December 16, men and women reenact the final steps of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem.

When the procession arrived at the entrance to the Church of Scientology Los Angeles, they sang their request for shelter. The reply was a warm welcome for them to come inside.

Those participating filed into the chapel, where traditional food and drink were served, followed by a performance of music and folkloric dancing.

Hispanic and Latin Angelenos represent nearly half the population of L.A. County. And the Church of Scientology Los Angeles partners with Oaxacan and other Latinx community leaders to help preserve and honor the culture of their homeland and ancestors.

In addition to its participation in this Christmas tradition, the Church also hosts annual celebrations of Central American and Mexican Independence Day in September, Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, in November, and other celebrations, seminars and cultural activities for the many and diverse communities that call Los Angeles home.

One reason the Church is so passionate about supporting programs like these is they represent an important right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Article 27 of the document states: "Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits."

To Make Hollywood Shine, the Church of Scientology and the Hollywood Village Initiative Went All Out on Their Holiday Cleanup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Hollywood Neighborhood Cleanup team, sponsored by the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre and its Hollywood Village initiative, joined forces with other community organizations and the LAPD. All up and down Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame, volunteers provided managers of restaurants, fast-food stores, souvenir, coffee and jewelry shops and local tourist attractions with displays inviting patrons and customers to take a copy of The Way to Happiness, the popular common-sense guide to better living by author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. They also placed mini-posters in shop windows promoting The Way to Happiness precept "Love and Help Children," which is the theme of The Way to Happiness float in the 2023 Christmas Parade.

Those sponsoring or supporting the clean-up with food and drinks for the volunteers included Kettle Glazed Donuts and Starbucks, which provided donuts and coffee to volunteers arriving for the day's activities, and Domino's Pizza, Monastery of the Angels and Salvation Army. Once done with the cleanup and beautification project, volunteers gathered at The Way to Happiness tent, erected on North McCadden Place next to the Scientology Information Center on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for homemade tamales and champurrado - a thick, creamy, chocolatey Mexican drink - fresh-baked pumpkin bread from Monastery of the Angels, and Domino's pizza.

The Way to Happiness tent was also on hand the evening of the Christmas Parade, to help ensure the joy of the season lasts throughout the year through application of the book's 21 precepts that point the way to a better, happier and more fulfilling life. Volunteers introduced paradegoers to The Way to Happiness and encouraged young and old to sign a pledge board committing to what they will do to create a good example for others.

"Winter Wonderland is a beautiful annual tradition," said Kasem, "and it is wonderful to see so many children enjoying themselves for the holidays."

Once the ribbon was cut, the fun began, including live entertainment, face painting, and Santa, who held court with his elves in his cabin where he gave out Christmas gifts and posed for photos with the kids.

The tradition of L. Ron Hubbard's Winter Wonderland began in 1983 when author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard first presented a giant Christmas tree in a holiday setting as a gift to the children of Hollywood. The Friends of L. Ron Hubbard Foundation and the Church of Scientology continue the four-decade tradition, providing a safe and beautiful location for families throughout the holidays. The street was filled with minions, ghouls and witches, and superheroes of all ages and sizes. Activities included pumpkin carving, face-painting and donut-eating contests. The Ferris wheel and bouncy house were particularly popular. And kids screwed up their nerve to pet a host of challenging creatures at the "creepy crawly critters" petting zoo.

One of the most popular features of the festival was a children's concert and sing-along of songs performed by some of the children's favorite cartoon characters.

Neighbors, community groups, Church volunteers and staff took turns manning trick-or-treat stations and contributed candy and other treats for the kids.

The annual Halloween fun day was just one of a series of events planned to make the holiday season special for East Hollywood kids and their families. Next was a celebration of Dia de los Muertos. The Holiday Lighting Festival is scheduled for November 19 to be followed by winter fun for the kids throughout the season.

Drug-Free Heroes Honored at the Church of Scientology Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Each year, as part of their celebration of Red Ribbon Week, the Church of Scientology Los Angeles and local chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World hold the annual Drug-Free Heroes Gala Awards. This year's gala, Saturday, October 28, in the atrium of the Church of Scientology Advanced Organization on L. Ron Hubbard Way, honored L.A. drug prevention activists from across the Southland.

Following dinner and live entertainment, Unitarian Bishop L.J. Guillory delivered the keynote speech and Church of Scientology Los Angeles New Civilizations Director Betsy Davis presented awards to local drug-free heroes:

* Alex Alvarado of Urbanzones, for his support to the Los Angeles Guatemalan community especially at-risk youth and ex-offenders

* Victor E. Antepara from Latinos Unidos Los Angeles Foundation, who promotes Latin American culture to provide direction and guidance and instill pride in youth, helping them avoid dangerous lifestyles

* Maria Isabel Omolo Romos of M.I.R.O., who helps women in need of support to restore their lives

* Annette Dedillo of Our Paths Foundation, whose services include drug education, advocacy, in-home support and parent training.

This was followed by a very special award to Strike Out Against Drugs founder David Sanchez. In recognition of his outstanding service to the community, Davis presented him with the President's Volunteer Service Award, including a certificate of achievement and a letter signed by President Biden.

Sanchez, whose story is featured in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network, was introduced to marijuana by a neighbor when he was 9. It was not long before he became addicted to heroin and crystal meth, habits he supported with a life of crime. Spending most of his adult life in jail, he finally freed himself from drugs and on release, opened a sober living facility called Beacon of Hope to help former addicts transition to a drug-free, crime-free life. But he wanted to do more to help youth avoid a life of drug abuse and addiction.

"I had to find an organization that was like-minded, that had the will and the want to get out there and make a change in the community," Sanchez says in his Voices for Humanity episode. "Drug-Free World has the facts about drugs, the truth about drugs." Sanchez shares why the Truth About Drugs materials of Foundation for a Drug-Free World are so vital: "Knowing about something that could hurt you is half the battle in being able to defeat it."

He established his nonprofit Strike Out Against Drugs, created a mobile Truth About Drugs theater using films from Foundation for a Drug-Free World and tours throughout Los Angeles helping youth and their parents understand the truth about drugs.

Church of Scientology Honors World Day of Peace With Interfaith Gathering

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- As part of its purpose to bring the community together in the name of a better life for all, the Church of Scientology Los Angeles marked International Day of Peace with an open house and forum. In coordination with the L.A. chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, they invited members of many faith traditions for an evening of interfaith dialogue. The event highlighted the cultural and religious diversity and inclusiveness of Southern California and the importance of religions everywhere to work for peace in the world.

Representatives and clergy from the Ahmadiyya Muslim and Sikh communities, Zoroastrianism, the Falun Gong movement, and the Church of Scientology shared the basic principles of their religions with the audience and one another.

The goal was for those attending to gain greater understanding, respect and appreciation for the faiths represented. Despite many hailing from different nations and cultures, the program was a striking demonstration of how much we all hold in common no matter our differences. Feedback showed the presentations helped foster a better appreciation of religion as a whole.

"Los Angeles is known for its diversity. We have so much we can learn from one another, and we hold so much in common," said Susanna Johansson, Public Affairs Director for the Church of Scientology Western United States. "By increasing our understanding of other faiths, we wish to strengthen freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as expressed in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

In 1948, those crafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) recognized and stated in the preamble that "the inherent dignity and... the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world." They called on all member states to have the UDHR "disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

Yet, by the turn of the 21st century, a survey found only 4 percent of American youth were even aware of the existence of the UDHR much less the rights it encompassed.

In 2001, educator Mary Shuttleworth founded Youth for Human Rights International to educate youth on the UDHR and inspire them to become advocates for tolerance and peace.

In Los Angeles alone, Youth for Human Rights and its sister organization United for Human Rights have empowered hundreds of thousands of youth with an understanding of the UDHR with booklets and videos that bring these rights to life.

Thanks to the support of the Church of Scientology and Scientologists, Youth for Human Rights provides this secular program and its materials free of charge to anyone wishing to use them to educate others on this vital subject.

Inspired by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard who stressed that "human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream," Scientology Churches, Missions and groups worldwide promote human rights awareness through education about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The LAPD and the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles have won the National Faith and Blue Weekend Photo Contest for the "confidence, purpose and togetherness of the volunteers" shown in the massive Faith and Blue Weekend cleanup. Faith and Blue is a grass-roots initiative that seeks to create "safer, stronger, more just and unified communities" through "partnerships among law enforcement professionals, residents, businesses and community groups through the connections of local faith-based organizations."

Cosponsored by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles and the Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, Faith and Blue Weekend in Hollywood bought together 50 community partners to clean and beautify the neighborhood.

Under the banner "Unity in the Community," more than 460 volunteers cleaned 170 city blocks, washed 200 storefronts and beautified some 1,300 square feet of spaces with a graffiti paint-out.

Among the 50 organizations that came together in support of this initiative were the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Hollywood Partnership, the L.A. Office of Community Beautification, the L.A. Department of Sanitation, and numerous local businesses and faith-based organizations.

Restaurants including Shakey's and Pink's Hotdogs set up tables of snacks and drinks for the volunteers. Home Depot and GarboGrabber brought supplies. A mariachi band entertained the crowd gathered in the parking lot of Hollywood's iconic Capitol Records Building. And the volunteers provided the muscle.

Delighted with the turnout, the LAPD Hollywood Captain thanked the Church of Scientology for its commitment to making Hollywood "a safer and cleaner place."

Faith and Blue founder Rev. Markel Hutchins, who arrived in Los Angeles from Atlanta, Georgia, to launch the city's Faith and Blue Weekend celebrations, was equally enthusiastic about the turnout, because when faiths, communities and law enforcement work together, they can bridge differences, increase collaboration and reduce bias and violence.

The Church of Scientology, LAPD and The Way to Happiness Foundation have partnered in monthly neighborhood cleanups since 2018, including a special annual scouring of Hollywood Boulevard on the eve of each year's Hollywood Christmas Parade.

After each cleanup, volunteers hand out copies of The Way to Happiness, written by humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. The Way to Happiness is a common-sense nonreligious moral code with 21 precepts to guide people to make better choices in their lives. By sharing The Way to Happiness with local businesses, volunteers provide them with a tool to promote values and contribute to a cleaner and more ethical community.

Church of Scientology Los Angeles Holiday Gift Giveaway and Family Fun Day

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- It was clear skies and perfect weather for a family outing this Sunday when more than 4,000 Angelenos filled the Church of Scientology Los Angeles and L. Ron Hubbard Way for the Church's annual toy giveaway. Children left clutching presents after an afternoon of ice skating, donut-eating contests, face painting, and complimentary cocoa, cookies, popcorn and cotton candy.

The gifts were the product of a month-long toy drive launched at the Holiday Lighting Ceremony at the Church November 19, when Jeff Zarrinnam, Chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust, Marine Kalamdaryan from the L.A. Community Alliance, and the Los Angeles Deputy Fire Chief Richard Fields donated the first presents.

"The past several years have presented great challenges to Los Angeles families," said Susanna Kaneer, public affairs director for the Scientology Churches of Greater Los Angeles. Recent data compiled by the University of Southern California shows that while food insecurity leveled off in L.A. County in 2021 after spiking at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in 2022. "Families who are having difficulty putting food on the table are more challenged than ever to provide gifts for their children, and we wanted to help ensure local children have the best Christmas ever this year," said Kaneer.

And thanks to the many volunteers and community partners who donated dolls, stuffed animals and games, and raised funds and purchased presents, youth attending the fun day went home with some 4,500 gifts.

All are invited to join the Church for the next family fun day January 1, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., when L. Ron Hubbard Way will be transformed into a Winter Festival with a snow chute, ice skating, a trackless choo-choo train and free gifts for all children age 10 and under.
