Gone but Not Forgotten: Church of Scientology Hosts Day of the Dead Festival

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Dia de los Muertos is not a day of sorrow but of joy. The Los Angeles Oaxacan Community honored the departed at the day's annual celebration at the Church of Scientology Los Angeles. Families celebrate the lives of deceased loved ones, welcoming them back as honored guests, serenading them, dancing traditional dances, and preparing their favorite foods.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles and the Monarca Purépecha Association hosted the celebration for the L.A. Oaxacan community. The Purépecha are indigenous people of Michoacán, Mexico. More than 2,500 observed the holiday together at the festival.

Booths lined L. Ron Hubbard Way, where artisans displayed handicrafts from jewelry to traditional clothing and the food and drink of the region. Others created flowered altars of marigolds. Called ofrendas, they contain photos and other memorabilia to welcome those who have died and honor and celebrate their lives.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, costumed men and women performed folkloric dances to traditional music in a joyous celebration of life.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles supports the culture and traditions of the many Latin communities of the Southland with festivals and cultural events throughout the year. An Ideal Scientology Organization, the Church was dedicated by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige in 2010. Scientology Church Honors and Celebrates the Indigenous Michoacán Culture

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- East Hollywood's L. Ron Hubbard Way was transformed into a street festival in honor of the Day of the Dead and the traditions and culture of the indigenous people of the Mexican State of Michoacán. More than a thousand guests filled the street for the celebration, a Michoacán tradition that honors the ancestors and all who have passed away. It was also an affirmation of the culture of the Purépecha, an indigenous people of Michoacán, hosted by the Monarca Purépecha Association and the Church of Scientology Los Angeles.

Artisans displayed handicrafts, from jewelry to traditional clothing, in a street fair along both sides of the street. They set up next to food stalls where tantalizing aromas invited visitors to sample some of the region's favorite foods.

There was churipo, a spicey stew prepared with chunks of beef, vegetables and chilis. And pozole, a dish made from hominy and meat, often seasoned and garnished with shredded lettuce or cabbage, chili peppers, onion, garlic, radishes, avocado, salsa or limes. There were also tamales and tacos dorados, with ingredients tightly rolled up in tortillas and fried in oil. And to top it off, a steaming cup of chocolate atole, made with Mexican chocolate, water, and milk, spiced with cinnamon sticks and anise, sweetened with piloncillo, a raw form of pure cane sugar, and thickened with corn flour.

Along the street were ofrendas, flowered altars built on the Day of the Dead to honor those who have passed. They are usually made of marigolds, which blossom at this time of the year in Michoacán, and contain photos and other memorabilia to welcome those who have died and celebrate their lives.

Octavio Chavez Aguirre, Mayor of Lagunillas in the state of Michoacán, commissioned a custom artisanal brass plate and had it presented to the Church of Scientology in recognition of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard and his support of the customs, traditions and rights of people of all cultures.

While this celebration was taking place on L. Ron Hubbard Way, the Guatemalan community was also marking the Day of the Dead in a commemoration reflecting their own unique culture in an event space set up in front of the Church of Scientology Los Angeles.

7th Annual DIA DE LOS MUERTOS EVENT to Exhibit 50 Altars, Showcase Local Artists

SAN ANTONIO, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- The largest annual Day of the Dead celebration in Texas, Día de los Muertos (Muertos Fest) will feature the largest open altar exhibit and artistic competition at the 7th annual event on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 at Hemisfair.

One of the most significant traditions during the Day of the Dead is the creation of an altar to honor the lives of the deceased. This important cultural practice in Mexico and Mexican-American and Latino communities is a reflective celebration of life in which the living, lovingly pay tribute and remember their departed family members and friends.

"The altar exhibition is truly the heart of the event with attendees viewing and experiencing 50 distinctive altars and a community living altar. These are the stories of San Antonio and its people told in powerful expressions of art and soul," says Jim Mendiola, Artistic Director.

A major focal point of the Día de los Muertos festival is the large community living altar which be featured at the entrance to the event. For the past several weeks people have been sending in photos via the Día de los Muertos website of their recently departed loved ones. The photos submitted, numbering in the hundreds, will be wheat pasted onto the living altar by local artist Sarah Brooke Lyons to create this powerful altar. During the two-day event attendees can add to the altar by leaving small offerings or photos.

This project is a collaboration between Artpace and New York based artist Mariana Vasquez and San Antonio artist Martin Delgado Event organizers have collected hundreds of photos for inclusion in the living altar via online submission at http://muertosfest.com/.

In addition to the altars exhibited in the competition, attendees will have the opportunity to experience altars created onsite by local organizations, including the following:
* Inner City Development, a non-profit, all-volunteer group creating an altar to their deceased volunteers
* Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) creating an altar to Emiliano Zapata on the 100th anniversary of his death
* San Antonio Parks Foundation, creating an altar to the late former mayor and community leader Lila Cockrell
* San Antonio Rampage, commissioning an altar by local community-based arts group San Anto Cultural Arts

Onsite artwork highlights include:
* An expanded visual artwork installation by the creative artist team Momo & Pompa, designed specifically for the new Hemisfair venue. The light sculptures of Momo and Pompa have been a part of the festival since its inception. The artist couple are prolific in their production of exhibitions and massive public light sculptures which supports their mission to inspire and help promote heritage by creating multi-sensory contemporary artwork with partnerships for the public and children of all ages.
* Soldado and Adelita Sculptures were created through collaboration between students and alumni of local arts group SAY Sí and artist group Colectivo Ultima Hora from Mexico City, MX. During a summer residency at SAY Sí in 2017, the two arts groups brought oversized calacas to life to exemplify the iconic images of ancestors from Mexico to San Antonio who were affected by or fought in the Mexican Revolution. Not to be missed is the curated art market with over 60 local vendor's selling original Day of the Dead inspired crafts and artwork. Event organizers are proud to support these 60 local businesses and entrepreneurs who represent San Antonio's creative economy. The two-day event also includes an impressive entertainment lineup for three event stages, workshops and children's programming. The Dance, Drum and Puppet Processions will take place on Saturday, October 26, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 27, at 3 p.m.

It will feature Las Monas and the larger than life-size puppets that have become a signature aspect of the largest Día de los Muertos event in San Antonio. The beneficiary of the Día de los Muertos event is Inner City Development, a volunteer-led non-profit entity serving the needs of San Antonio's west side community for over 50 years.
