BHERC to Cap-Off Another Monumental Year with 30th Annual S.E. Manly African-American Short Film Festival, Nov. 15-17, at Regal @ LA LIVE

The festival will feature amazing films, special events, special guest honorees, and the popular 'A Great Day in Black Hollywood,' this year to open the event

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Oct. 18, 2024 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) – The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) President Sandra J. Evers-Manly is pleased to announce the 30th Annual S. E. Manly African American Short Film Festival (SEMAASFF), will take place November 15, 2024; and is kicking off with its historic opening event, “Great Night in Black Hollywood,” the weekend of November 15, to open the occasion’s weekend.

The festival will be taking place at the Regal at LA Live, 1000 West Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015. This will be BHERC’s final event of an action-packed year. With the success BHERC saw with their prior three festivals of 2024, “The Youth Diversity Film Festival”, “Sista’s Are Doin’ For Themselves” and “Reel Black Men” Short Film Showcases, it has been yet another landmark year for the organization. BHERC hopes to continue their upward momentum by using the 30th annual SEMAFF, to usher in a new and even more successful year going into 2025.

“The 30th year of this festival for us is validation. We have sorted through tens of thousands of films throughout these 30 years, we have screened thousands of them in our festival,” said Executive Director John Forbes. ”And after 30 years we are still here, still going. The formula works, great talent, great stories, and an organization that wants them to be seen.”

SPECIAL EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

BHERC will again hold its popular opening night ceremony, “A Great Day in Black Hollywood” honoring ground-breaking talent, industry contributors, community leaders, and organizations making a difference; both in Hollywood and the community.

The Opening Night, will be held at Regal at LA Live, Friday, November 15, 7 p.m. (PST) and will also introduce the class of 2024 filmmakers and their films. A welcome and overview of the festival will be provided from the President & Founder Sandra Evers-Manly, and the Executive Director John Forbes, curator of the film festival. Also, several special screenings will be held that are included in a full festival pass, or can be paid for and attended separately.

FILM HIGHLIGHTS:

Selected from over 1,500 entries, the 2024 festival films offer a variety perspectives from around the world, also featuring several standout films from previous festivals within the year. They represent genres and subject matter that include: social justice, historically based events, mental health, romance, drama, faith, sci-fi, horror, fantasy, documentaries, animation, action and comedy.

BHERC 14th Annual Youth Diversity Film Festival To Take Place Saturday, March 23, 2024 in Los Angeles

BHERC has a core mission to recognize and support youth's unique talents and voices by providing and promoting this visual platform. It will include 24-hour access to the films and in-person, feature prime industry panels led by top entertainment professionals. Opening Ceremony that introduces the filmmakers with short trailers of their movies, is always a highlight of the event.

The BHERC YDFF is one of the longest-running youth film festivals to focus on diversity. YDFF filmmakers share short narratives, animation, and docu-short films from various topics related to what youth are experiencing today.

Manly African American Short Film Showcase (SEMAASFS) closing event, the weekend of January 19-21st, it will include 50 short films. BHERC is also hosting students to see the must-see film Origin, by talented and prolific filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, the first weekend of its release nationally. "We must go out and support our filmmakers and help make their films a success at the box office," noted BHERC President Sandra Evers-Manly.

The BHERC is also sponsoring a special Children's Film Block and "First Weekend Club Family Night", which also include supporting Ava DuVernay's must see film Origin, during its festival closing weekend. The festival was offered virtually on the BHERC streaming service www.BHERC.TV, from December 29th through January 12th. The short film showcase culminates with the in-person closing weekend event, taking place at the Regal at LA Live, 1000 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90015.

With the success BHERC saw with both, "Sista's Are Doin' For Themselves" and "Reel Black Men" Short Film Showcases, 2023 was a landmark year for the organization. BHERC's Youth Diversity Film Festival, also experienced an unprecedented number of submissions and global inclusion. Each festival and showcase in 2023, showed exponential growth, excitement, and notoriety; with "Sista's" being mentioned in an LA Times Article. Some of Hollywood's brightest stars: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Kari Lemmons, Princess Monique, and Numa Perrier, made a point to mention BHERC and its "Sista's" Short Film Showcase, as a major milestone and resource in their careers. "SISTAS..." began thirty years ago as a call to the entertainment industry to acknowledge and highlight outstanding Black women directors and Black and diverse emerging talent. What began as a small screening and discussion has become one of the most recognized, inspirational, and emulated events of the Black filmmaking community in the country. It is a clear-cut concept: a showcase and festival of short films directed by some of the nation's top emerging directors and filmmakers, with a dialogue following. For this 30th year celebration, BHERC, has added panels, speakers, and discussion during the three-day celebration.

"Now more than ever the Black female storytelling perspective is needed, in filmmaking; we cannot deny their power, voice, and talent. We are so proud of we see, both, on the professional and emerging front. Moreover, the community needs to know and support our 'Sister Sheroes' as they tell our stories. This is an opportunity, and a platform to do just that," stated BHERC President, Sandra Evers-Manly.

In celebration of the showcase's 30th year, and due to overwhelming number of more than 1,000 submissions, BHERC will also hold a virtual festival following the in-person showcase. This virtual festival will stream on BHERC.TV from May 22-31.

The BHERC Sistas Are Doin' It For Themselves: "A Legacy of Sisterhood and Excellence" continues to bring to the public outstanding shorts created by Black female directors. This 30th year adds an upfront and intimate chance for the audience to view and discuss the artistry, passion, and sacrifice involved in the independent filmmaking process, with the addition of panels and networking. This unique program has consistently promoted and supported the work of Black women in film for more than three decades.

Some of the past "Sista" filmmakers and participants include: Gina Prince-Bythewood ("The Woman King", "Love & Basketball"), Kasi Lemmons ("Harriet", "Eve's Bayou"), Lena Waite ("The Chi"), Millicent Shelton ("Black-ish"), Ava Duvernay ("Selma", "When They See Us"), Dianne Houston (first Black Female to be nominated for an Academy Award / Short Film category) and the Oscar-nominated Dee Rees ("Mudbound") just to name a few. Many of these filmmakers have received high honors and recognition for their achievements and breakthroughs in filmmaking. Guests have a rare chance to have an open dialogue and hear the awe-inspiring stories of how these "Sistas" did it for themselves.

12th Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival Free and Open to the Public February 18 – March 4, 2022

RICHMOND, Va. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Richmond Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) announces its 12th annual showcase of over 20 free local and national films selected to raise awareness of environmental issues and offer solution-oriented messages of hope that inspire action towards promoting planet health and environmental justice. Most of the films will be shown virtually, with six in-person events hosted by partners of the festival.

Again this year, RVA EFF held the Virginia Environmental Film Contest. First prize went to "Headwaters Down," directed by Justin Black, Will Gemma, and Dietrich Teschner. This film tells the story of five friends who undertake a 13-day, 250-mile canoe adventure from the headwaters of the James River to the fall line in Richmond. Along the way, they explore the environmental and historical aspects of the troubled yet beautiful river as they witness first-hand the many factors impacting its future.

The two second prize winners were "Breathing Life Back Into Richmond," directed by Jackie Stephens and "Canaries in the Coal Mine," written, directed and produced by Nick Garnhart. Two youth awards were also given. All five films will be shown virtually the evening of Sunday, February 20. "Headwaters Down" will also be shown at The Byrd Theater on February 27. The festival begins with "8 Billion Angels," hosted by James River Association. The film uses breathtaking cinematography to tell the truth about the conflict between the size of our global population and the sustainability of our planet. It inspires real solutions toward lasting sustainability and a better quality of life for all Earth's inhabitants. The Virginia Interfaith Power & Light hosts "Mossville, When Great Trees Fall," telling the story of one man who refuses to give up when his centuries-old black community, contaminated by petrochemical plants, faces the loss of its ancestral home.

The Richmond Public Library & City Office of Sustainability host "The Sacrifice Zone," following a group of environmental justice fighters determined to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as dumping grounds for our consumer society. "High Tide in Dorchester" focuses on ground zero for sea level rise along the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. Unique aspects of the festival include the Virginia Environmental Film Contest, and a film for children, "Microplastic Madness," which documents 56 fifth graders from Brooklyn whose actions on plastic pollution morph into extraordinary leadership and scalable victories.

"Frozen Obsession," the world premiere of the feature-length film, kicks off the festival with a panel discussion to follow. The film is a visually stunning and historically poignant expedition through a dramatically changing Arctic aboard the Icebreaker Oden. The expedition included scientists, historians, journalists, education professionals, and college students, including several from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). The panel includes director and producer David Clark, Gonglai Gong of Virginia Institute of Marine Science, and the VCU students who were part of the expedition.

"Into the Okavango," from National Geographic Documentary Films, documents a 1,500-mile expedition across three countries and shows the effects of increasing pressure from human activity. The Okavango River Basin and the Okavango Delta, one of our planet's last wetland wildernesses, provide a vital source of water to people, African elephants, lions, cheetahs, and hundreds of species of birds.

People are arriving from different social and geographical spaces who go on to occupy a place in Valle del Cauca society, altering the everyday relationships of its cities and inhabitants. Thursday, November 12th, 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the festival continues with We, the others... family, diversity, coexistence, a program for the whole family focused on finding concepts of empathy and inclusion through stories. Empathy comes from the Greek words that translate to "inside him" and "what he feels", although its real meaning is the primordial ability to put oneself in the place of the other. This program will be put on with the participation of entities such as Instituto Nacional Penitenciario y Carcelario (INPEC), the Prison Complex of Jamundí and the Agustín Nieto Caballero public school, among others. The program includes the films: All I need is a Ball (Espana), 11:40 (Argentina), Zapatos y la mágica aventura de su creacion (Colombia), Calvario (Espana), La Cachera (Colombia).

At 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 12th the short films in FeminiStories seek to address the different views of women from a perspective of gender as a cross-sectional element that pushes for both men and women to take action to achieve universal equality. The idea of this program is to open an inclusive dialogue regarding themes that are of interest to not only women - these films aren't simply made by women or about women, but rather deal with achieving inclusion from a feminine perspective. Some of the movies that will be seen are: La abuela del ano (Mexico), Baile (Brazil), La vendedora de Lirios (Argentina), Yun (Chile), Track (Spain). DFFNYC opens October 20 with the U.S. Premiere of "Cabarete," a heartfelt coming of age story directed by first-time director, Ivan Bordas and closes October 30 with the world premiere of social drama "Carta Blanca" by Pedro Urrutia.

Inspired by true events, "Cabarete" follows Somalia, a good-hearted teenage kite surfer from the Dominican Republic who convinces his idol to train him for an upcoming tournament in Cabarete. However, once in Cabarete, the town's hedonistic nightlife quickly catches Somalia's attention, and he finds himself having to choose between a life of pleasure and pursuing the athlete ambitions he once had. Director Ivan Bordas and some cast members will be present for a Q&A after the screening.

"DFFNYC is adapting to the 'new normal' by going digital while maintaining its essence, which is to bring the most emblematic stories that are made in and about the Dominican Republic and connecting the film experts and personalities from our island and its diaspora. Films will conclude with question and answer sessions with the directors hosted by PRINDIE board member, novelist, and Princeton University professor Aleksandar Hemon (co-writer of the upcoming Matrix 4) and others on the PRINDIE team. 70% of the included films have granted PRINDIE a New Jersey premiere, East Coast premiere, or US premiere. The festival will also include films from the Princeton Environmental Film Festival that were not able to be screened during the regular event due to COVID-19 and a section of films by Princeton University students.

Ticket sales will follow a pay-what-you-can model starting at $2.99 per film and 50% of profits will be shared with the filmmakers directly.

Princeton Lecturer Lauren Wright will conduct a Q&A with the subjects of the film following the screening. Additionally, there will be a special out-of-competition screening of NIMIC, a short live-action film starring Matt Dillon from Best Picture Academy Award nominee, director Yorgos Lanthimos.

In light of the unprecedented events of 2020, PRINDIE: Princeton Independent Film Festival will hold its first all-virtual film festival, open this year to all film-lovers in United States. Running from Thursday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, the 13th, the festival features 37 short films. Inspirational Short Film, ‘Camp Kennebec: The History’ to screen at Marina del Rey Film Festival

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Marina del Rey Film Festival will hold a public screening of the new Broad Street Studios documentary short film, "Camp Kennebec: The History" on Tuesday, October 22 at 12 p.m. at the Cinemark 18 Howard Hughes Center, Los Angeles. Directed by Broad Street Studios Glenn Goldenberg, and produced by Bob Merz, "Camp Kennebec: The History" (24 minutes) delivers an in-depth look at one of America's oldest Maine summer camps for boys, chronicling activities ranging from white-water canoe trips to inter-camp color war. The film explores the roots and activities of the camp through archival footage, extensive interviews, and narrative history, with a focus on the values of camaraderie, influence, and respect.

"A compelling and interesting story about a time and place that changed the lives of many, and remains in their hearts and minds to this day," said Linda Waxman Finkle, former Albany JCC Marketing Director & Programming Coordinator.

Camp Kennebec, an overnight summer camp for boys ages 9-16, was established in 1906 in North Belgrade, Maine, by three Philadelphians, Louis Fleisher, Charles Edwin Fox, and Milton Katzenberg. In July 1907, the first campers arrived at Camp Kennebec, located on Salmon Lake. Campers hailed from east coast and mid-west cities, including Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Cleveland, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Chicago.

Although Camp Kennebec wasn't presented as a Jewish religious camp, the majority of the campers, staff, and founders were Jewish. Members of the camp faculty, referred to as "Uncles," were university-educated men. Campers slept in army tents and engaged in a variety of competitive athletics including swimming, sailing, canoeing, baseball, basketball, riflery, archery, tennis, track, and inter-camp Maroon & Grey color war. Alongside sports, dramatic and humor theatrical productions by the oldest "First Section" campers were a mainstay.

Senior camp faculty-led, lengthy wilderness trips were at the camp's foundation, exploring the wilds of Tumbledown Mountain, Mount Kathadin, Moose River, and the Allagash River in Maine. In 1925, Camp Kennesuncook lodge was established in Chesuncook to complement the Allagash river trip.

As early as 1924, alumni and faculty of the Kennebec camps organized reunions and established an alumni association to foster relationships among former campers and provide scholarships. The camp ceased operations in 1991 when it was turned into the Maine Golf Academy. To this day, camp alumni continue to organize periodic alumni reunions. The most recent 110th anniversary was held in 2017 in Philadelphia. Notable Los Angeles based Kennebec alumni include entertainment executives Ken Ehrlich, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Matt Ember.

Star-Studded Digital Film Festival Returns to South Beach

MIAMI, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The 5th season of the Miami Web Fest and the Veteran Film Awards takes place May 2-5, 2019 at the Fillmore Miami Beach. The first of its kind in the state of Florida, this event showcases the best digital series from over 30 countries and also highlights the work of veterans. It is designed to allow the general public to see independently produced shows before television networks discover them.

Miami Web Fest is different by design. "It's a new type of festival for a new type of filmmaker," says founder Bryan G. Thompson. "Just like the traditional creators of short films and feature films, creators of digital series need a forum to showcase their work directly to the public and discuss it face to face. They also want to interact and network with executives and celebrities in a relaxed environment. That is why we exist."

Miami Web Fest also includes a Pitch Fest, where filmmaker pitch their original concept directly to network executives. Pitch Fest and the main competition will be judged by executives from major networks and film distribution companies.

Confirmed judges include Grant Housley (Paramount Pictures), Rainer Lorenzo (Viacom), Silvia Edgell (HBO Go), Vanessa Cruz (HBO), Maria Eugenia Contreras (HBO), Jordan Brenner (Vimeo), Doug Schwab (Maverick Entertainment), and Chevonne O'Shaughnessy (American Cinema International).

Celebrity guests include Emily Swallow ("The Mentalist"), Scott Lowell ("Bones," "Queer as Folk"), and 10-time Emmy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award Winner Sharon Gless. Sharon Gless is an Emmy Award winner and a Golden Globe Award winner, and has been nominated for 10 Emmy Awards as well as 7 Golden Globe awards. She has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She is also iconic among the Miami film community for her role as Madeline Westen in the popular television series "Burn Notice." Gless is also a supporter of the web series community and currently plays "Mary Elizabeth" in the series Adoptable.

The festival was founded by award-winning filmmaker and US Army veteran Bryan G. Thompson. Thompson's long list of credits includes the short film "Noventa," a drama highlighting the "wet foot dry foot" law, and most recently the feature film "El Sue no," a drama which highlights D.A.C.A. and the proposed Dream Act. "El Sue no" won Best Feature at the Festival de Cine Latinoamericano, secured a distribution deal, and is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

A special screening of this film will take place during the festival, featuring celebrity guests and a Q & A with the stars of the film. A graduate of the University of Miami School of Law, Thompson is a recipient of the Key to the City of Miami, which he received for his cultural contributions.

The Gala Awards Ceremony will take place May 5 with the Red Carpet Cocktail Party beginning at 4 p.m. and the Award starting at 6 p.m. The event is co-hosted by Emmy-nominated TV Anchor Stephanie Bertini of NBC 6 and Chief Meteorologist Betty Davis of Local 10 News.
