BOSS™ Racks Up $130,000 in a Day and Places Second in Long Beach Gives

LONG BEACH, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The 4th Annual Long Beach Gives campaign, an online giving day sponsored by the City's leading nonprofit funders and nonprofit support organizations, invites donors from throughout the city and beyond to give to the local nonprofit of their choosing. This year, the effort raised $1,965,539 to support 232 participating nonprofits. BOSS™ (Business Of Student Success) raised $130,000 from more than 300 donors, making it the second most contributed to charity in this year's campaign.

That distinction was earned, in part, through BOSS's partnerships. "We could not have competed without the matching donations by Bella Canvas / Alo Yoga and Greg Perlman of GHC Housing Partners, as well as the ongoing support from the Los Angeles Rams through VP Molly Higgins," Everett Glenn, sports industry pioneer turned BOSS leader, said.

"I am so thrilled to hear that our contribution has made such a big difference! So thrilled," said Lindsey Potter, People Experience Manager/DEI at Alo, Alo Moves, and BELLA+.

BOSS, a Long Beach-based nonprofit, focuses on helping local boys - and particularly boys of color - succeed in school, their community, and eventually, in their careers. The group uses sport and a focus on specific career pathways, including STEAM, to support the 200 boys they serve. Through year-round and multi-year programming, BOSS is successfully addressing the inequities in education laid bare by COVID.

The served boys have five years of across-the-board outperformance on all metrics tracked by the Department of Education, and a 20/20 college acceptance rate among graduating seniors. Those graduates now attend Stanford, UCLA, Tennessee State, Lincoln University, San Diego State, Whittier College, CSULB, and UC Merced.

Of the 232 nonprofit organizations that participated in Long Beach Gives, BOSS ranked second only behind The Assistance League, an institution with 800 members that's been operating in the area for nearly a century.

Additionally, BOSS earned prizes in the following categories:

* Most unique donors to a nonprofit

* Most peer fundraisers for a nonprofit

* Early giving: most unique donors to a peer fundraiser

* Early giving: most unique donors to a nonprofit

* Early giving: most dollars raised by a nonprofit

Beyond the role they played in BOSS's Long Beach Gives success, the BOSS team identified two partners that will support their career pathway programming moving forward.

"Bella Canvas / Alo Yoga is our newest sponsor and we're working with them to develop career exposure and networking opportunities for our boys around the apparel industry," Glenn explains.

He also adds, "The Rams have been supporters from Day 1 and continue to open doors and create unique, real-world experiences and opportunities for advocacy for our boys." Rams VP Molly Higgins said, "The boys are lucky to have you! We are lucky to have you fighting for our kids! Thanks for the important work you are doing."

Green Kid Crafts launches Kitchen Table STEAM to Support Families This Fall

SAN DIEGO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- As families transition from summer activities to virtual, in-person, or hybrid schooling this fall, many caregivers are concerned about providing their children with activities that are fun and educational. Green Kid Crafts, a subscription box service centered on STEAM and nature-based activities, launched their Kitchen Table STEAM program on September 2 to give families extra support this fall.

The campaign color, pink, was chosen for its reference to the fireweed plant. Fireweed is often the first plant to regrow after a forest fire or volcanic eruption, making it a symbol of hope for families during this trying time.

"Coming up with fun, STEAM-based activities can be challenging even in normal times," said Founder and CEO Penny Bauder. "Caregivers don't have time to scroll through search results or go shopping for supplies. We want to alleviate the investment it takes to get started and bring exactly what families need to provide engaging hands-on activities right to their door."

Jessica Whiting, a mom of two, was familiar with these struggles as she tried to work full time and provide quick activities for her daughters. "Everything we needed for each activity was in the box, and the kids had a ton of fun," she explained. "We could quickly do these activities in between meetings and phone calls and everybody was happy. These boxes will stay in the rotation for sure!"

Caregivers like Whiting are ready for this fall's Kitchen Table STEAM program, which includes four STEAM-based activity boxes designed by experts to meet the learning needs of specific age groups.

Additionally, subscribers will receive supplemental materials, including access to:
* Ask-a-Scientist sessions
* YouTube videos with activity inspiration from real parents
* Additional learning opportunities related to each box, including DIY activities, podcast, video and book recommendations

Caregivers will also have an opportunity to submit their child's artwork to our Kitchen Table Show and Tell, hosted by CEO Penny Bauder.

Camp EDMO Announces Comprehensive After School Programs

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Camp EDMO(TM), a leading Bay Area non-profit offering STEAM and SEL oriented After School and Summer Camp Programs, announced that it is making its Comprehensive After School Programs, which encompass 180 days of the school year, available to Bay Area schools. Currently, Camp EDMO(TM) is operating a Comprehensive After School Program at Ruby Bridges Elementary in Alameda. The program has helped ease the school's challenges of low test scores and daily disruptions that were getting in the way of student learning.

Proper science education, especially at the K-8 levels, has long been an issue in the state of California. While science education in California received a state budget boost of $400 million in the 2018-19 school year, the increase didn't factor in teacher training. As a result, it is left up to the teachers to find a way to incorporate science into their curriculum with little to no support, making it difficult for them to adhere to the Next Generation Science Standards implemented by California in 2013. All too often, children are forced to learn science outside of the classroom, making after school programs that offer STEAM activities in a fun, relaxed environment more important than ever.

"By middle school, if children don't enjoy STEM concepts or envision themselves pursuing a STEAM career, the odds that they will do so decline dramatically," said Ed Caballero, Camp EDMO(TM)'s Executive Director and Co-founder. Grammy Winner Pitbull to Speak at Palm Beach State College’s STEAM Fundraiser

A first generation Cuban American, the young Perez, was inspired by one of his high school teachers to pursue his musical dreams. Now, he wants to make sure other children are inspired and have that same opportunity to succeed.

In 2013, Pitbull helped create the SLAM! (Sports, Leadership, Arts and Management) charter school in one of the Miami's most impoverished neighborhoods. SLAM!, which educates students in grades 6-12, now has a school in West Palm Beach that could become a direct feeder to Palm Beach State College.

Pitbull is also passionate about using and advancing technology. Besides utilizing social media to communicate with his fans and supporters, he is co-founder of eMerge Americas. This 3-year-old conference brings together high-tech firms from throughout the Americas to promote innovation and the development of disruptive technology across a myriad of industries.

In 2017, the Foundation will enter the fifth year of its STEAM initiative to impact the projected shortage of local, skilled professionals in the STEAM fields.
