Shoplifter and Dishonest Employee Apprehensions and Dollar Recoveries Soared in 2022, According to Jack L. Hayes International’s 35th Annual Retail Theft Survey

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Jack L. Hayes International, Inc. released today the results of their 35th Annual Retail Theft Survey which reports on over 340,000 shoplifter and dishonest employee apprehensions in 2022 by just 26 large retailers, who recovered over $288 million from these apprehended thieves.

"Eighty-one percent of survey participants reported an increase in shrink in 2022 and this is reflected in their total apprehension and recovery statistics," said Mark R. Doyle, President of Jack L. Hayes International, Inc. "Total apprehensions increased 45.6% and total recovery dollars from these apprehensions increased 70.5% in 2022. Many retailers returned to making shoplifter apprehensions post pandemic and focused more of their attention on external theft issues in 2022. Our survey revealed shoplifter apprehensions and recovery dollars from those apprehensions increased significantly in 2022, up 50.9% and 90.5% respectively.

"Recovery dollars where no shoplifter apprehension was made, but merchandise was recovered, increased 44.1% in 2022."

Mr. Doyle also stated, "On the employee theft side, there was an increase in 2022 in both dishonest employee apprehensions and recovery dollars, 18.0% and 14.7% respectively."

Highlights from this highly anticipated annual theft survey include:

* Participants: 26 large retail companies with 22,182 stores and over $700 billion in retail sales in 2022.

* Shrink: 81% of retailers surveyed reported that shrink increased in 2022.

* Apprehensions: Participants apprehended 340,488 shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2022, up 45.6% from 2021.

* Recovery Dollars: Participants recovered over $288 million from apprehended shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2022, up 70.5% from 2021.

* Shoplifters: 295,654 shoplifters were apprehended in 2022, up 50.9%; and over $237 million was recovered from these shoplifters, up 90.5%. Note: Dollars recovered from shoplifters where no apprehension was made ($485 million) increased 44.1% in 2022.

* Dishonest Employees: 44,834 dishonest employees were apprehended in 2022, up 18.0%; and over $50 million was recovered from these employees in 2022, up 14.7%.

Dollar recoveries from Shoplifters and Dishonest Employees increased an amazing 30.7% in 2021, According to Jack L. Hayes International’s 34th Annual Retail Theft Survey!

Hayes International, Inc. released today the results of their 34th Annual Retail Theft Survey which reports on over 200,000 shoplifters and dishonest employee apprehensions in 2021 by just 25 large retailers, who recovered over $240 million from these apprehended thieves.

"When it comes to shoplifting, the survey showed many retailers moved away from apprehensions in 2021 and focused more on recoveries. Our survey revealed shoplifting apprehensions were down 16.2% in 2021, while overall shoplifting recoveries (from apprehended and non-apprehended thieves) were up a staggering 30.8%," said Mark R. Doyle, President of Jack L. Hayes International Inc.

Mr. Doyle added, "Survey respondents noted the pandemic environment, staff safety, lower police response and higher risks as some of the reasons for less shoplifter apprehensions.

"There was an increase in 2021 in both dishonest employee apprehensions and recovery dollars, 6.0% and 29.8% respectively. Survey respondents noted additional focus, enhanced investigation methods/tools and less associate supervision as some of the reasons for the increase in apprehensions and recovery dollars of dishonest employees.

Highlights from this highly anticipated annual theft survey include:

* Participants: 25 large retail companies with 22,751 stores and over $650 billion in retail sales in 2021.

* Apprehensions: Participants apprehended 204,404 shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2021, down 12.8% from 2020.

* Recovery Dollars: Participants recovered over $240 million from apprehended shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2021, up 9.9% from 2020.

* Shoplifters: 166,745 shoplifters were apprehended in 2021, down 16.2%; and over $196 million was recovered from these shoplifters, up 6.1%. Note: Dollars recovered from shoplifters where no apprehension was made ($339 million) increased an astounding 51.1% in 2021.

* Dishonest Employees: 37,659 employees were apprehended in 2021, up 6.0%; and over $44 million was recovered from these employees in 2021, up 29.9%.

Shoplifting and Dishonest Employee Average Case Values Increased in 2020, According to Jack L. Hayes International’s 33rd Annual Retail Theft Survey!

Hayes International, Inc. released today the results of their 33rd Annual Retail Theft Survey which reports on over 184,000 shoplifters and dishonest employee apprehensions in 2020 by just 22 large retailers, who recovered over $81 million from these thieves.

"While temporary store closures due to the Covid-19 Pandemic resulted in fewer thieves being caught stealing in 2020, the average shoplifting case value increased 13.0% and the average dishonest employee case value increased 3.8% over 2019," said Mark R. Mr. Doyle added, "As expected, the Covid-19 Pandemic clearly affected apprehensions and recovery dollars in 2020, with shoplifting apprehensions and recovery dollars down 43.8% and 36.5% respectively; and dishonest employee apprehensions and recovery dollars down 20.3% and 17.2% respectively. However, those participant retailers designated as 'essential,' saw overall apprehensions rise 7.9% and dollar recoveries increase 9.1% during 2020."

* Participants: 22 large retail companies with 18,594 stores and over $500 billion in retail sales in 2020.

* Apprehensions: Participants apprehended 184,621 shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2020, down 41.3% from 2019. Note: "Essential" retailers' apprehensions increased 7.9%.

* Recovery Dollars: Participants recovered over $81 million from apprehended shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2020, down 30.0% from 2019. Note: "Essential" retailers' recovery dollars increased 9.1%.

* Shoplifters: 158,158 shoplifters were apprehended in 2020, down 43.8%; and over $49 million was recovered from these shoplifters, down 36.5%. Note: "Essential" retailers' shoplifting stats were up 8.6% (apprehensions) and 15.3% (recovery dollars).

* Dishonest Employees: 26,463 employees were apprehended in 2020, down 20.3%; and $32 million was recovered from these employees in 2020, down 17.2%. Note: "Essential" retailers' dishonest employee stats were up 2.7% (apprehensions) and 0.1% (recovery dollars).

Shoplifters and Dishonest Employees Steal Profits from U.S. Retailers, According to Jack L. Hayes International’s 32nd Annual Retail Theft Survey!

Hayes International, Inc. released today the results of their 32nd Annual Retail Theft Survey which reports on over 348,000 shoplifters and dishonest employee apprehensions in 2019 by just 21 large retailers, who recovered over $136 million from these thieves.

"Two-thirds of retailers participating in this survey reported an increase in shrink in 2019, which is reflected in their reported apprehensions and recovery dollars. Overall apprehensions increased 2.4% and recovery dollars from those apprehensions were up 4.9%. Shoplifting apprehensions and recover dollars increased 3.0% and 3.5% respectively, with recovery dollars from shoplifting incidents without an apprehension increasing by 11.0% (to $176 million) over the prior year," said Mark R. Mr. Doyle added, "While employee theft apprehensions were down 2.9%, the recovery dollars from those apprehensions increased 7.8%. Overall, retail theft continues to be a serious problem for retailers negatively impacting their bottom-line, and creating more out-of-stocks and higher prices to the consumer."

* Shrink: 66.7% of survey participants reported an increase in shrink in 2019, with 23.8% reporting a decrease in shrink, and another 9.5% reported shrink stayed about the same.

* Apprehensions: 348,036 shoplifters and dishonest employees were apprehended in 2019, up 2.4% from 2018.

* Recovery Dollars: Over $136 million was recovered from apprehended shoplifters and dishonest employees in 2019, up 4.9% from 2018.
