Promoting the Magic of Hollywood with a Summer Cleanup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Each month, Hollywood Village volunteers hold a neighborhood cleanup to keep Hollywood beautiful, safe, and clean. With visitors pouring into the city over the summer from around the world, this was not the season for the volunteers to take a vacation from their monthly initiative. Setting out from the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre, where they pick up their trash bags, shovels and brooms, volunteers took off to clean up the neighborhood.

To welcome those arriving in the neighborhood via the famous Hollywood Freeway, one team of volunteers tackled trash that had collected on a prominent offramp. Another team took on a go-to location for paparazzi and tourists wishing to catch a glimpse of celebrities dining at its trendy bistros.

After their cleanup, volunteers invite others to Set a Good Example and Safeguard and Improve Your Environment-principles featured in The Way to Happiness, a book of common-sense values that informs the initiative. They hand out copies of the booklet to those they meet and place boxes of The Way to Happiness in local takeouts, restaurants and shops to share with their customers.

"This is a new kind of moral code," says the coordinator of the project. "It was written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. It not only includes values common to people of all faiths and backgrounds, it even provides tools you can use to change your life. I have seen this book create miracles."

Some months, their activities include creating murals and other artistic projects. Each November, they hold a massive cleanup to show Hollywood at its best for the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade.

Anyone wishing to join the initiative is invited to do so. Hollywood Village is a partnership of the Church of Scientology, The Way to Happiness Foundation, and the Los Angeles Police Department. It has grown into a community coalition of people of all faiths, ideologies and backgrounds, working together to make Hollywood shine.

Mentors Honor L. Ron Hubbard for Helping Them Help At-Risk Youth Take the Path to a Better Life

HARLEM, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- In the Bronx, where the violent crime rate is the highest of the five boroughs of New York City, TBS New Direction, a Bronx-based mentoring and youth interventionist nonprofit, is addressing the root of the problem. Joined by religious leaders and community activists from the Bronx and Harlem, TBS New Direction leaders and members gathered at the Church of Scientology Harlem Community Center to honor L. Ron Hubbard for his common-sense guide to better living, The Way to Happiness. The group uses the book to build character and expand young people's ability to succeed without resorting to crime. To express their appreciation, they awarded honorary membership to L. Ron Hubbard, along with a Black Spades Jacket, which they presented to a representative of the Church of Scientology.

"I am honored to extend L. Ron Hubbard our heartfelt recognition for his extraordinary contributions to humanity through The Way to Happiness," said Mr. Marion "Tiny" Frampton, founder of TBS New Direction at the presentation.

TBS New Direction programs include gun and gang violence prevention, public safety activities, job development and training, community outreach and mobilization and social intervention. For the past several years, the nonprofit has been using The Way to Happiness to help youth learn the importance of moral values and discover their own goodness and values.

TBS New Direction takes its name from The Black Spades, a street gang that began in the Bronx in the 1960s. The Black Spades' original purpose was to fight racism, violence, bigotry and crime, and to counter the rapid spread of heroin throughout the community. By the 1970s, however, when the original leadership stepped down, the gang lost its bearings and ultimately became one of the most dangerous gangs in New York.

In 2019, a corps of The Black Spades founding members created the nonprofit TBS New Direction to accomplish the group's original purpose through mentoring at-risk youth.

The Church of Scientology Harlem and its Community Center are dedicated to working side by side with groups of all denominations and providing an array of civic programs and humanitarian initiatives to strengthen and unite the community.

Bringing Solace and Help in the Aftermath of a Violent Act of Terror

MUNICH, Germany /ScoopCloud/ -- In July 2016, an armed shooter killed nine and injured 16, leaving Munich reeling. A team of volunteers from The Way to Happiness Association sponsored by the Church of Scientology of Munich literally took matters into their own hands. They began giving copies of The Way to Happiness to people one-on-one, beginning with those living or working in the district where the shootings took place.

July 2016 also saw terrorist attacks in Ansbach and Wuerzburg, and in December another in Berlin. The movement to share The Way to Happiness quickly spread throughout the country, adopted by other Scientology Churches and their The Way to Happiness groups.

The Way to Happiness is a common-sense guide to better living written by author, humanitarian, and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. Its 21 precepts provide a roadmap to a better, kinder, happier way of life. These volunteers turned to the booklet, knowing it has been used to bring calm to entire regions in turbulent times. Wherever they went, volunteers kept copies of the booklet with them in many different languages. Whether riding in a subway or tram, or stopping for a coffee, they shared the booklet with those they met. Following the directions in the first pages of the book, they contacted people, handed them a booklet with their own name written on the cover, and gave them a copy to read and others to hand to people they knew who could also benefit from reading it.

Hundreds of thousands of booklets have since been passed hand to hand in Germany.

A sampling of the stories they heard from those they reached out to with The Way to Happiness illustrates the power of this activity.

A volunteer handed a booklet to a woman who was on her way to visit friends in Switzerland. On her return to Munich, the woman told him that when she arrived, her friend "was very sad, her self-confidence was gone. She was really depressed. Then I read to her from the booklet. 'This booklet was meant especially for me,'" my friend told me." By the end of the visit, the friend was no longer hopeless. When she cried now, it was from happiness, in appreciation of what her friend had shared with her.

A volunteer received a letter from a person he'd give the booklet to. "I was very surprised by the content of the booklet as I had never read so much wisdom with such remarkable clarity," the man wrote. He asked the volunteer for 10 copies in German and Polish and five in English so he could pass them on to his friends.

"I wanted to give the booklet to a young man," said one of the volunteers, "but he told me 'You gave that to me before.' I asked, 'What did you like best?' and he was beaming when he answered 'That you don't have to worry if you play by the rules.'"

Another told the volunteer that he has his booklet at home and he reads it again and again to refresh himself on the concepts and apply them. He described what he learned from The Way to Happiness as "essential."

A woman wanted to help a friend who had given up after years of battling cancer. She gave The Way to Happiness to her friend, who paid her a surprise visit a few days later, her entire appearance changed. "This is the most beautiful book," the friend told her. "I totally changed my viewpoint. I decided to survive!"

A security officer at a shopping mall in Stuttgart told the volunteer that thefts in the mall had declined since they began distributing The Way to Happiness in the area.

In the first chapter of the booklet, Mr. Hubbard writes:

True joy and happiness are valuable.

If one does not survive, no joy and no happiness are obtainable.

Trying to survive in a chaotic, dishonest and generally immoral society is difficult.

Any individual or group seeks to obtain from life what pleasure and freedom from pain that they can....

Without too much trouble, using this book, you can help them survive and lead happier lives.

While no one can guarantee that anyone else can be happy, their chances of survival and happiness can be improved. And with theirs, yours will be.

It is in your power to point the way to a less dangerous and happier life.

L. Ron Hubbard Life Exhibition Announces a New Display of the Royal Bestowal for Mr. Hubbard From His Royal Highness Sultan Tomas Cabili Jr.

When thousands of police and military throughout the country were trained on the booklet's precepts and their application, as featured in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology network, officers learned to respect the culture and beliefs of the many communities and cultures of the Philippines and to work harmoniously with them. The Sultan is committed to promoting the universal values of this book to foster positive change and build a more peaceful world.

Following the ceremony in Manila, HRH Sultan Tomas Cabili Jr. and HRH Sultana Remedios Pastor traveled to Los Angeles to present the decree and Kris sword to the L. Ron Hubbard Life Exhibition on Hollywood Boulevard.

Praying and Riding for Peace Through the Streets of South Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- On Sunday, February 26, bikers, low riders and Corvette club members rode through South Los Angeles in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the United in Peace Rides. Along the way, they stopped to pray for the victims of senseless violence. A police officer taking part in this month's Peace Ride joined the LAPD eight years ago after serving in the Marines. Born and raised in South Central, he knows first-hand the cultural and ethnic tensions that break out in violence in the city. He spoke of the importance of The Way to Happiness as a way to cut through differences and restore communication by reminding people of what we all have in common.

A woman joined one of the three Peace Ride prayer circles held along Sunday's route to pray for a life lost to gang violence. She spoke of the importance of getting this booklet into the hands of youth. Young people have to make decisions that will affect them the rest of their lives, she said. Their decisions can go either way. And The Way to Happiness can help them choose peace and a better life for their families and the entire community.

At the Scientology Community Center at the end of the ride, a Peace Ride board member presented an award to author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard who authored The Way to Happiness, saying the booklet's common-sense values form the foundation of the initiative's success. Next, the Peace Rides recognized the LAPD for 10 years of protecting the riders each month with motorcycle patrols from the South Traffic Division.

United in Peace is a multiethnic, multifaith popular movement that unites people to work together to bring peace to our inner cities. Law enforcement and government leaders have recognized and acknowledged the reduction in violence and crime rates in neighborhoods touched by the Peace Rides. Community Comes Together in Support of the LAPD and a Cleaner and Safer Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- With violent crime on the rise in Los Angeles, more than 50 local businesses, nonprofits and faith-based organizations joined the LAPD in a community coalition on Faith & Blue Weekend to reclaim the streets of Hollywood with a neighborhood cleanup launched by the Hollywood Community Police Station and co-organized by the Church of Scientology.

October 8 was no ordinary Saturday morning in Hollywood. As crowds gathered in the Capitol Records Building parking lot, tourists and locals soon realized something special was happening. Was it the presentation of a new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Or an unexpected movie premiere? No. This was the launch of a coalition of more than 50 organizations that decided to take back the streets of Hollywood.

More than 460 volunteers gathered for a community cleanup -- the largest ever done in the area. Two local businesses donated the space and parking for the event that was organized by the LAPD and the Church of Scientology on National Faith & Blue Weekend under the banner "Unity in the Community."

The purpose of Faith & Blue Weekend is to create safer and stronger communities by engaging law enforcement officers and local residents through the connections of faith-based organizations.

Hollywood LAPD Captain Yasir Gillani welcomed the volunteers, thanking them and the many LAPD officers for their support of the project. He gave a special shout-out to the Church of Scientology for bringing the community together to support the program.

Faith & Blue founder Rev. Markel Hutchins, in Los Angeles from Atlanta, Georgia, to launch the Los Angeles Faith & Blue Weekend celebrations, spoke of a turnout like this being proof that when faiths, communities and law enforcement work together, we can bridge differences, increase collaboration and reduce bias and violence.

Those coming on board for a cleaner, safer and more beautiful Hollywood included the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Hollywood Partnership, the L.A. Office of Community Beautification, the L.A. Department of Sanitation, and numerous local businesses and faith-based organizations.

The volunteers divided into seven teams, each headed by an LAPD Hollywood Division officer. The City of Los Angeles Department of Sanitation and Home Depot equipped them with bags, shovels, brooms and trash pickers.

Teams cleaned 170 city blocks totaling 17 miles of Hollywood streets, and they beautified 200 storefronts by cleaning, painting and removing graffiti.

The trash was carried away by one of the L.A. Department of Sanitation's new zero-emission all-electric garbage trucks.

As the teams returned to the Vine Street staging area at noon, they were serenaded by a mariachi band while they enjoyed a complimentary lunch provided by local businesses including Pinks Hot Dogs, In-N-Out Burger, Tommy's Hamburgers, Domino's Pizza, Sharky's and Fresh Brother's Pizza.

The Church of Scientology, LAPD and The Way to Happiness Foundation have partnered in monthly neighborhood cleanups since 2018, including a special annual scouring of Hollywood Boulevard on the eve of each year's Hollywood Christmas Parade.

Church of Scientology Celebrates African World Heritage Day by Honoring Changemakers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The heritage of Africa depends on what we do now to ensure future generations flourish and prosper says the Church of Scientology. UNESCO set aside May 5 as African World Heritage Day to celebrate the continent's unique cultural and natural heritage and to "spearhead international efforts to draw on the vast potential of Africa's cultural and natural heritage as a force for poverty reduction and social cohesion."

The Church of Scientology sponsors humanitarian programs that address crucial factors preventing the realization of these goals: drug abuse, violation of human rights, illiteracy, and systemic corruption.

In sub-Saharan Africa, 88 percent of children of primary and lower secondary school age (202 million) were reported as not proficient in reading, and 84 percent (193 million) were not proficient in mathematics in 2015, according to the United Nations Statistics Division.

Substance abuse, particularly alcohol consumption, has been on the rise in Africa for years, according to the World Health Organization.

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime reports that of 4,799 trafficking victims detected in 26 sub-Saharan African countries from 2016 to 2019, 3,336 were in West Africa including 2,553 children, and 80 percent of victims were trafficked for forced labor.

And according to Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland QC, sub-Saharan Africa received nearly $2 trillion in Foreign Direct Investment and official development assistance between 1980 and 2018, but lost more than $1 trillion to illicit financial outflows. "When looking at the whole of Africa, that figure rises to $1.3 trillion," she told anticorruption representatives gathered in Kigali, Rwanda, for a conference May 3-6. "And let us be clear, $1.3 trillion could lift the 1.4 billion people living on less than $1.25 per day out of poverty."

Seen in the light of some 40 percent of the population in Africa being 15 years old and younger, effective programs that provide youth with the tools they need to address these crises are key to the future of this continent.

Churches of Scientology Promote Community Partnership on National Night Out

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientologists across America took a stand against drug abuse and crime August 3 by joining local law enforcement and nonprofit organizations to make National Night Out 2021 special for their communities. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and raises awareness about crime and drug prevention. The Church of Scientology International has backed this initiative for more than three decades.

Scientologists took part in events ranging from neighborhood barbecues, live concerts and family fun days hosted by their Church of Scientology to helping organize neighborhood events and providing drug and crime prevention materials to those attending.

"We support this initiative and its purpose of making neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live," says Fabio Amicarelli, Director of Humanitarian Programs of the Church of Scientology International.

The numbers show a clear relationship between drug use and crime:

* 21 percent of those sentenced in state prisons and local jails are incarcerated for crimes committed to obtain drugs or money for drugs.

* Drugs are a factor in almost 40 percent of those jailed or imprisoned for property crimes.

* 14 percent of those incarcerated for violent crimes report they committed their most serious offenses for drug-related reasons.

Scientology Churches sponsor chapters of Foundation for a Drug-Free World and the Foundation's award-winning Truth About Drugs initiative. They also provide drug education specialist training and work with local educators, police, churches and nonprofits to reach youth on this vital subject.

For World Friendship Day, the Church of Scientology Shares the Key to Lasting Relationships

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Church of Scientology International extends an invitation to people of goodwill to join Scientology Churches and Missions in support of International Day of Friendship, a United Nations initiative that promotes "friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals" and seeks to "inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities."

In observing this UN Day, Scientologists share two precepts from "The Way to Happiness," the common-sense moral code written by L. Ron Hubbard, that hold the key to lasting friendships:

* "Try not to do things to others that you would not like them to do to you," and

* "Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you."

"Among many peoples in many lands for many ages there have been versions of what is called 'The Golden Rule,'" wrote Mr. Hubbard. "The philosophic question concerning wrongdoing, the argument of what is wrong is answered at once on a personal basis: Would you not like that to happen to you? No? Then it must be a harmful action and, from society's viewpoint, a wrong action. It can awaken social consciousness. It can then let one work out what one should do and what one should not do."

As to the second and positive version of the rule, "One can get into a lot of conflicting opinions and confusions about what 'good behavior' might be," Mr. Hubbard wrote. "If one were to think over how he or she would like to be treated by others, one would evolve the human virtues. Just figure out how you would want people to treat you."

The full text of these precepts, available on the website of The Way to Happiness Foundation, provide know-how for an individual wishing to implement the guidelines personally or take them up with others to help them salvage or enhance interpersonal relationships.

Putting these and the other 19 precepts of "The Way to Happiness" into action has everything to do with the purpose of International Friendship Day, because, as Mr. Hubbard points out:

"Aside from personal benefit, one can take a hand, no matter how small, in beginning a new era for human relations.

"The pebble, dropped in a pool, can make ripples to the furthest shore."

Scientology Churches mark International Friendship Day with open house events and forums where they share successful application of "The Way to Happiness" in addressing issues of importance to the community. They also reach out with "The Way to Happiness" information stands and distribution events to share the booklet and its wealth of knowledge.

An interactive timeline on the Scientology website documents how the Church of Scientology Kansas City and local community activists used "The Way to Happiness" in Peace Rides, based on the effectiveness of Peace Rides in Los Angeles. The KC team distributed "The Way to Happiness" to promote a climate of unity and peace, counter violence and reverse the city's climbing homicide rate. In honor of the event, Kansas City rapper and recording artist Kodde One wrote the anthem "Hold Yo' Head High" to help spread the booklet's message of brotherhood throughout the city.

Other examples of the impact of "The Way to Happiness" are featured on the Scientology Network in episodes of the original series Voices for Humanity, which spotlights the work of humanitarians using the booklet to address societal needs.

* Rosalba and José Cordero and their Social Development and Recovery of Values Association, who not only educate young people with these precepts in schools, they also bring the program to inmates across Mexico's entire prison system resulting in 99 percent of their graduates living lives free of crime.
