Simpson Spotlights a More Connected Approach to Memory Care for Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

WEST GROVE, Pa., June 25, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — As Americans live longer, conversations about positive aging and brain health are becoming increasingly important. During Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, Simpson, a family of retirement communities in Pennsylvania, is helping normalize these discussions through educational programs and resources that empower individuals and families to approach memory care with greater understanding, confidence, and hope.

Simpson’s Jenner’s Pond in West Grove and Simpson Meadows in Downingtown are Life Plan Communities that offer independent living, assisted living, memory care residences, rehabilitation and respite care.

The memory care programming at both communities has earned the prestigious Comfort Matters® accreditation, marking Simpson the first provider in Pennsylvania and one of only 43 worldwide to achieve the distinction. The accreditation recognizes Simpson’s commitment to providing person-directed dementia care that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being for individuals living with dementia.

At Simpson Meadows, memory care residents regularly take part in group outings, such as attending a recent Philadelphia Phillies game, fishing at a local fish hatchery, bowling, and miniature golf, led by Executive Director Tim McCracken.

“One of the things that’s very important at Simpson Meadows is fostering and cultivating a community that isn’t segregated by where people are in their lives. Residents from our memory care neighborhood are invited to join us on our outings and community events,” said McCracken.

From daily engagement and social connection to family education and specialized support, Simpson’s approach helps reduce fear and stigma while giving families practical guidance for the road ahead.

“Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia touch millions of families, including my own,” said Dr. Carol McKinley, President and CEO of Simpson. “Through the thoughtful care and programming in our Simpson communities, we provide reassurance to residents and family members. We want to help people see memory support as part of the continuum of healthy aging and an opportunity to enhance safety, engagement, and quality of life. Greater understanding leads to better care, stronger support, and more compassionate communities for those living with dementia and the people who care for them.”

As part of its person-directed care model, Simpson communities use Amba, a passive, AI-enabled health monitoring solution that provides insights to help identify and prevent infections, falls, and hospitalizations. Because the technology does not record video or audio, it supports resident privacy while delivering meaningful health data.

The HeyAmba interface is accessible on a phone or tablet and allows care teams to quickly obtain resident updates through simple questions. For example, caregivers can review a resident’s sleep score from the previous night, track changes over time, and identify emerging patterns that may indicate a health concern. This passive monitoring helps support timely interventions while allowing residents to maintain their preferred daily routines.

McCracken said Amba serves as an extension of the Simpson care team, helping team members spend more time focused on resident care while also identifying changes that may signal elevated risk of falls or infections. Simpson also uses HeyAmba’s data to keep families informed and provide valuable insights for clinicians.

“It’s a continuation of our care philosophy,” McCracken said. “By alerting us when a resident gets out of bed, we can intervene and potentially prevent a fall. We can also monitor behavioral changes that may signal an infection before symptoms develop.”

Together, Simpson’s accredited memory care programming, family education, and supportive technology reflect a broader commitment to helping residents live with dignity, connection, and comfort at every stage of aging.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 3, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — As National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month approaches in November, Frank Residences is spotlighting award-winning programs that are transforming memory care. The Bay Area’s leading nonprofit senior living community demonstrates how combining creativity, innovation, and thoughtfully designed environments can enrich the daily lives of people living with dementia and provide peace of mind for their families.

A resident of Frank Residences engages with the Memory Care Experience Station.
Image caption: A resident of Frank Residences engages with the Memory Care Experience Station.

“At Frank Residences, every memory care neighborhood is intentionally small, with no more than 18 residents per neighborhood, to encourage connection while reducing overstimulation,” said Robert Sarison, LMFT, Executive Director at Frank Residences. “Natural light, courtyards, and inviting common spaces are designed with comfort and safety in mind, while honoring residents’ independence.”

Life enrichment at Frank Residences is personalized around each resident’s story, interests, and abilities. Music, art, and drama therapies inspire connection, creativity, and self-expression, while tailored activities nurture individuality and strengthen family bonds. Residents also enjoy concerts, films, and art workshops in state-of-the-art venues such as the Osher Performance Center, movie theater, and art studio.

Innovative programs and forward-thinking tools at Frank Residences enhance life for residents.

  • Memory Care Experience Station – A one-of-a-kind multisensory experience using sight, scent, sound, and touch to reduce agitation and ease anxiety. Residents have “traveled” through Italy with the aroma of basil and fresh bread or taken a sensory drive across the Golden Gate Bridge using vibration pads. Families often describe these sessions as moments when their loved ones “come alive.” The program has earned national recognition, including the Fast Company World Changing Ideas Award and the LeadingAge California Innovation Award.
  • Dinner Party Program – Developed in collaboration with UCSF’s Global Brain Health Institute, this annual gathering uses favorite foods to evoke long-term memories and encourage interaction. Residents share cherished recipes and stories, demonstrating the power of food as a non-pharmacological approach to dementia care.
  • Dementia Capable Care – All team members receive advanced training through the evidence-based Dementia Capable Care™ curriculum from the Crisis Prevention Institute, emphasizing person-centered, non-drug approaches. Two certified instructors also extend this training to families.
  • Virtual Reality Training – Innovative VR simulations help staff experience dementia from the resident’s perspective, building empathy and enhancing compassionate, individualized care.
  • Liquid View – An installation that creates a therapeutic, engaging experience and converts the space into an immersive, nature-inspired digital environment. It offers calming visuals that reduce stress and promote emotional well-being for residents.
  • Fitness and Wellness with Exos – In partnership with Exos, a national leader in holistic wellness, certified instructors provide fitness classes and personalized training designed to support strength, balance, and vitality beyond traditional exercise.
  • Empower Me Therapies – On-site physical, occupational, and speech therapy services further support residents’ health and independence.
  • Arts & Medicine Integration – UCSF-trained physicians use the arts as a therapeutic tool to enhance mood and connection.

“When Marvin first arrived, I worried about how he’d adjust,” said Barbara, whose husband now lives at Frank Residences. “The team recognized his unique routines and gave him the reassurance he needed. Now he’s thriving in an environment that truly values his dignity—it’s changed both of our lives.”

UPCOMING COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

Grace Gardens Memory Care Opens This Summer

SANTA ANA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Town & Country Life Plan Community announces the grand opening of Grace Gardens, a $25 million memory care community featuring one of the largest outdoor garden courtyards in Orange County. The nonprofit community offers residency for approximately 80 residents with Alzheimer's and dementia in four distinct neighborhoods.

The Grand Opening Celebration is at 2 p.m. PDT Friday, July 23 and features live music, complimentary beverages, brain-healthy treats, and tours of the memory care neighborhoods and community features. Attendees are invited to create a painting in the art room during the party. Tours will be socially distanced, and refreshments will be individually served. RSVP at 714-480-7738 or http://tcmanor.com/upcoming-events/.

"Nature produces a therapeutic effect on those with dementia and Alzheimer's," Town & Country Executive Director Dirk DeWolfe said. "We created a community where nature can be part of each resident's day."

A formative encounter with a dementia patient at the start of DeWolfe's career contributed to the unique physical design of Grace Gardens. "I took a combative patient for a walk outside and everything about him changed," DeWolfe said. "As long as he was walking, he was happy. When we began Grace Gardens, I knew a walkable, natural setting had to be integral to the design."

Grace Gardens will provide residents access to beautiful, natural surroundings, sunlight and plenty of secure, open space to move around. The 3,000 sq. ft. courtyard features walking paths, trees, flowers, edible plantings, raised gardens and a potting shed for horticulture therapy. Residents with less mobility will have access to indoor horticultural encounters.

"We look forward to the day when Alzheimer's is a disease of the past. Until then, we plan to do everything we can to make the journey as pleasant as possible," DeWolfe said.

Grace Gardens has shaped the environment around those living with dementia to empower residents with maximum independence and dignity. Activities and programming are designed to accommodate each individual's aptitude to ensure their success and make life easier. Programming is stage-informed to address the individual. There are many shades of cognitive impairment, and the team starts by investigating possible causes. They then apply all the tools, best practices and knowledge to improve the physical, emotional and spiritual experience of each resident based on their needs and potential.

Their memory care environment provides a sense of independence, autonomy, and choice. Using the latest in therapeutic design principles, Grace Gardens helps those experiencing cognitive decline from Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and other types of dementia to live successfully. Little cues make the difference, and intuitive layout and signage makes wayfinding simple.

Grace Gardens is on the Town & Country campus, which has a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. They offer four neighborhoods, each attuned to a specific peer-based, stage-informed cohort of residents. Rooms are private and spacious with garden views. High-tech touch screens and intuitive wayfinding are featured. Families and residents can have breakfast, lunch or dinner together at an onsite dining venue called Rob's Garden Cafe. Grace Gardens offers 24x7 nursing staff and concierge doctor's office, medical appointment transportation and chef-crafted meals. Therapies include art, music, pet, exercise, and horticulture.

Town & Country is a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit Christian retirement community in the heart of Orange County. Built in 1975, Town & Country was brought to life with the vision of showing God's love through the caring and serving of their residents. The 8-acre campus is full of outdoor courtyards, gardens and fountains with every residential apartment having a private patio. Town & Country offers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and short-term rehab care. For more information, visit https://www.tcmanor.com/

Make Alzheimer’s a Memory: BRAIN CARES – Helping People Live a Brain Healthy Lifestyle

ST. LOUIS, Mo. /ScoopCloud/ -- Brain Cares™ has announced the launch of its new website - BrainCares.com. With a mission to "Make Dementia a Memory," Brain Cares helps people practice lifestyle behaviors that are known to promote brain health.

"We are revolutionizing how people manage their brain health," says Don Veenstra, founder and CEO of Brain Cares. "The site makes it simple to understand, practice, and monitor how to best do this, on a day-to-day basis."

Anyone familiar with a dementia such as Alzheimer's knows just how devastating that disease can be. This statement is true for the person with the diagnosis, their Care Givers and also their family members who worry about getting the disease. In the past, the only thing a person could hope for was the discovery of a pill that that would make everything right.

History shows the majority of research to date has been focused on finding that perfect pill, but with little success. As a result, many go through life worrying as they wait for their turn to be diagnosed.

It is time to stop worrying and start taking action! Current research now shows that lifestyle matters. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits has the potential to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. An active lifestyle focused on Mental Stimulation, Physical Exercise, A Brain Healthy Diet, and Staying Social can make a difference!

The Brain Cares website is the first of its kind to help people practice the habits associated with living a brain healthy lifestyle.

"It is the result of having spent almost 15 years working with thousands of clients suffering from dementia," says Veenstra.

Many times over, he has been asked these type of questions: What can I do on my own to promote my brain health? What can I do to help guide a family member or loved one with dementia? What can I do to help a family member with dementia that lives in another part of the country? The website BrainCares.com was launched for the sole purpose of addressing these questions.

Veenstra says, "The work that has gone into bringing the website to the public has been a labor of love." One that he hopes will truly help shape the future for individuals, as well as society, in a very positive way.

Austin ‘Wiggin’ Out’ Event Raises Awareness and Dollars to Help Fight Alzheimer’s Disease

Denise Gott Brett Cullen Erich Hover

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 20, 2016 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Wearing smiles and purple wigs, a gathering of normally serious professionals mingled festively in "Wiggin' Out," a fundraising event held at Maggie Mae's in Austin, Texas, Saturday evening, January 16. "We achieved two objectives," says Denise Gott, CEO of ACSIA Partners, hosts of the event. "First, we raised some money to help fight Alzheimer's. And second, we raised awareness of the growing need for long-term care as the disease progresses."

The event raised $19,000, which will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association. The contributions were from participating insurance companies as well as ACSIA Partners, company agents, and the CEO.

The mind-robbing disease is a growing threat. Together with other forms of dementia, Alzheimer's afflicts one in nine American's age 65 and older; and one in three age 85 and older. At present it can't be prevented, cured, or even slowed, the association reports. So casualties could swell in the years ahead. From 2000 to 2013, death attributed to Alzheimer's increased 71 percent.

"At ACSIA Partners we're glad to support the vital work of finding a cure for Alzheimer's," says Gott. "We're also glad to make a difference for families right now. We can't do anything about the disease itself, other than donate, but we can help families plan for associated long-term care services, which can be substantial."

"As Alzheimer's progresses, people may forget to eat, or have trouble bathing or toileting," Gott explains. "Someone will have to help them, either a family member or paid professional. Planning for this can really help, personally as well as financially."

"Wiggin' Out" was attended by Hollywood actors, 150-plus company agents, and assorted guests. The event was part of a three-day ACSIA Partners conference that included keynotes by the co-producers of "It Snows All the Time" (a feature film about Alzheimer's), and breakout sessions on long-term care planning.

Co-producers Brett Cullen and Erich Hover also play lead roles in the film. Cullen is best known for starring roles in "Apollo 13," "The Dark Knight Rises," "42" and "The Guilt Trip" with Barbra Streisand. Hover had his first movie break acting alongside Brad Pitt and Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Moneyball." His experience with Alzheimer's in his family motivated him to co-create "It Snows All the Time."

About ACSIA Partners LLC:

ACSIA Partners LLC -- https://www.acsiapartners.com/ -- is one of America's largest and most experienced long-term care insurance agencies serving all states. The company is also a co-founder and sponsor of the "3in4 Need More" campaign, which encourages Americans to form a long-term care plan.
