Although experts vary in their estimation of the prevalence of gum disease, it is clearly one of the most common medical conditions in the United States. 50 out of 100 adult Americans have moderate to severe gum disease, 40 out of the 50 do not know it, and fewer than two of them will get treated before it's too late. In the initial stages of the disease, gums can become red, swollen and bleed easily. However, some patients have no symptoms at all. If the condition worsens, gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously damaged and the teeth can become loose, fall out or have to be removed.

The LANAP protocol offers a proven, vastly less painful and less invasive treatment. LANAP treatment is typically performed in a dentist's office under local anesthesia to eliminate any possible discomfort. A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum, and the infection is cleared away without cutting or stitching of the gums. The tooth roots are then thoroughly cleaned of tartar and plaque, and the laser is used again with a different setting to create a stable, firm blood clot to seal the pocket. The dentist treats one half of the patient's mouth at each session and most patients are able to drive themselves back to work or home following the procedure.

For Dr. Rodney, the path to becoming a dentist wasn't clear or easy. He was born in Russia and moved to the States with his family when he was 3 years old. They lived in New York until he was 15 years old, and moved to many of the boroughs due to his father looking for work. As an immigrant family, dentistry was considered a luxury and he did not have any exposure to it as a child. However, the story changed when he and his family moved to Florida where he completed high school.

During his undergrad, he was working several jobs, one of which was in a restaurant as a server. One of his regular patrons was a dentist and Dr. Rodney saw how kind he was, and how he considered dentistry a fulfilling career. So, he asked if he could work for free in his dental office, and within two weeks he had a job as an assistant and a passion for the profession.

"I saw how many lives he touched and how much he affected the community, and it grounded my decision to go into dental school," said Dr. Rodney. "My path in dentistry made me value the relationships you build and how much someone's life can be transformed through the power of a smile."

Spodak Dental Group Collects More Than 250 Pounds of Halloween Candy for Operation Gratitude

Bluffton Resident Gets Something to Smile About

First Los Angeles Dental Clinic That Uses Hospital-Type HVAC Systems to Mitigate Diseases Like COVID-19

Mi Dentista has set up elegantly-designed high-efficiency negative pressure dental units so that both droplets and aerosols may be rapidly eliminated via a high-speed vacuum. Each unit's reverse flow fan is rated to evacuate up to 2100 CFM (cubic feet of air per minute) which means that the quiet, powerful system may replace the air around every dental unit every 20 seconds. In addition, due to the 6000 CFM rating of the multiple reverse flow fans, the air across the entire dental office may be replaced every 90 seconds. Most importantly, as you can see in the video below, the air around the treatment care area, namely the oral region where dental procedures are carried out, is being constantly replaced and refreshed without interruption.

The negative pressure approach is the same method that large, specialized hospitals use to prevent the transmission of many airborne pathogens like tuberculosis and measles in the form of negative pressure isolation rooms. Yet, without similar support, dentists and dental assistants may have a higher chance of becoming infected and transmitting the disease to others.

"Ventilation systems that provide air movement from a clean (DHCP workstation or area) to contaminated (clinical patient care area) flow direction should be installed...," CDC COVID-19 Guidance for Dental Settings (Updated on May 19, 2020).

"Consider the use of a portable HEPA air filtration unit while the patient is actively undergoing, and immediately following, an aerosol-generating procedure. The use of these units will reduce particle count (including droplets) in the room...." "Consider the use of upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as an adjunct to higher ventilation and air cleaning rates."

The Mi Dentista dental team has also implemented other infection control methods recommended by the CDC and the American Dental Association including avoiding placing patients in an enclosed waiting room, no accompanying visitors, repeated disinfection of surfaces during the day, and frequently replacing masks, face shields, gowns, goggles, and gloves. The air evacuated from the dental environment also first goes through a high-efficiency pre-filter and then is treated with high-powered, UV-C radiation to destroy virus particles. While no approach completely and absolutely eliminates the risk of infection, these methods are believed to help reduce it.
