Seven Rabbits on a Pole — October 3

The season opens with scenes from Pasquale Tassone’s opera “Seven Rabbits on a Pole,” based on the drama by John C. Picardi, with a libretto by Elizabeth Searle. Through the story of an Italian immigrant family struggling to establish a life in America, the opera explores poverty, prejudice, assimilation, family and the search for home.

The Memory of Melodies — November 22

“The Memory of Melodies” explores how composers remember, borrow and transform music from the past. Melodies can survive borders, generations and political change, becoming a form of cultural inheritance that connects us to where we came from. Featuring soloists Wei Zhao on flute, guitarist Apostolos Paraskevas, violinist Krista Buckland-Reisner, and pianist Carmen Rodríguez-Peralta.

NeuroDex ExoSORT Platform Demonstrates Treatment-Responsive Blood-Based Measurement of Neuronal TDP-43 in People Living with ALS

NATICK, Mass., July 1, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — NeuroDex, a precision diagnostics company specializing in the isolation and analysis of neuron-derived extracellular vesicles (NDEs) from blood, today announced new findings supporting NDE-associated TDP-43 as a treatment-responsive biomarker in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

TDP-43 mislocalization and aggregation occur in more than 97% of ALS cases, about 40% of frontotemporal dementia and a substantial proportion of Alzheimer’s-spectrum disease, either as co-pathology or primary pathology (Limbic-predominant Age-related TDP-43 Encephalopathy,LATE). Despite its central role across neurodegenerative diseases, reliable biofluid biomarkers capable of measuring TDP-43 pathology in living patients have been elusive.

Conventional plasma TDP-43 measurements are limited by substantial biological background, as TDP-43 is expressed throughout the body and detected from numerous peripheral cell types. NeuroDex’s proprietary ExoSORT™ platform addresses this challenge by selectively enriching neuron-derived extracellular vesicles from blood, providing a minimally invasive window into molecular processes occurring within neurons of the brain and spinal cord.

Across multiple independent cohorts, ExoSORT-based analysis demonstrated that NDE-associated TDP-43 distinguished sporadic ALS from healthy controls. These findings were reproduced across three cohorts: 75 sporadic ALS versus healthy controls (44% increase, P=0.0003); 25 sporadic ALS versus 30 healthy controls (52% increase, P=0.002); and a third cohort of 52 ALS versus 37 healthy controls, in which NDE-associated TDP-43 was markedly elevated in disease (more than twofold higher; P<0.0001).

Longitudinal analyses further showed that NDE-associated TDP-43 increases over time as disease progresses. In the most recent cohort, NDE-associated TDP-43 rose over time in sporadic ALS and tracked clinical status. Within-patient longitudinal modeling estimated an increase of approximately 45% per year in sporadic ALS, and TDP-43 levels were associated with disease severity as measured by the ALSFRS-R.

“TDP-43 is emerging as a central pathology in neurodegeneration, yet measuring it in biofluids has been a long-standing challenge. A blood-based readout of TDP-43 could enable better patient selection and treatment monitoring and make clinical trials more efficient. These data are encouraging and support moving into clinical validation,” said Dr. Ajay Verma, CEO of Twilight, which works with NeuroDex to develop TDP43 biomarkers for ALS and FTD.

TDP43 can also serve as a treatment response biomarker. In a recent phase 2b randomized, placebo- controlled clinical trial (PARADIGM) conducted by NeuroSense Therapeutics (Nasdaq: NRSN) with its lead product candidate PrimeC (Cudkowicz et al. 2026), NeuroDex applied its ExoSORT workflow to serial samples collected longitudinally from study participants across all scheduled study visits. NDE-associated TDP-43 was measured in serial blood samples obtained throughout the trial, enabling assessment of biomarker trajectories over time in both placebo-treated and actively treated participants.

In this trial, NDE-associated TDP-43 increased over time in the placebo group, consistent with the natural-history pattern observed in NeuroDex’s prior studies. In contrast, participants receiving PrimeC demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in NDE-associated TDP-43 from baseline over the 6-month treatment period.

Notably, the biomarker analyses were derived from the same randomized clinical dataset that demonstrated favorable effects on functional decline, survival, and additional disease-relevant biomarkers. Taken together with NeuroDex’s prior work, these findings strengthen the evidence linking NDE-associated TDP-43 to ALS disease biology and support its continued evaluation in clinical studies as a pharmacodynamic biomarker.

The winning piece will be performed and professionally recorded during LCO’s 2026–2027 season, with the composer receiving a $1,200 cash prize and a $300 travel stipend.

Now in its sixth year, the competition exemplifies the LCO’s charitable mission: to make high-quality classical music freely accessible to all while promoting today’s living composers. All LCO concerts are free to attend, ensuring that every new work premiered through the Call for Scores reaches audiences regardless of financial means.

LOWELL, Mass., May 2, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Lowell Chamber Orchestra (LCO) is thrilled to announce its seventh season, promising an ambitious lineup of performances that continue to challenge the conventional boundaries of classical music. Building on its reputation for innovation, accessibility, and artistic excellence, LCO’s 2025–2026 season will spotlight groundbreaking works, emerging and established composers, and an unwavering commitment to community engagement — all presented free of charge. The season is once again organized in collaboration with “A World of Music” Concert Series at Middlesex Community College, where LCO is the college’s resident orchestra.

The season, titled “New Perspectives,” reflects LCO’s mission to bring underrepresented voices and contemporary compositions to the forefront, alongside reinvigorated interpretations of the classical canon.

The season opens with “Classical Magic” on October 12, featuring Boccherini’s evocative “La casa del diavolo,” Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 2 with soloist William Suh—the winner of the 2025 LCO International Young Artist Competition—and Mozart’s iconic Symphony No. 40.

In December, audiences will experience “String Virtuosity”, a program designed to showcase the technical brilliance of the string section through music by Corelli, Hindemith – featuring violist Jessica Cooper – a world premiere by Nancy Skolos, and J.S. Bach.

The season continues in February with a powerful and wide-ranging concert highlighting music from the African-American diaspora, embracing traditions that span classical, gospel, jazz, and beyond. This concert is done in collaboration with Berklee School of Music.

April’s performance, “Monumental Sounds”, juxtaposes the elegance of Martines’ overture to “Isacco”, the passion of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 performed by acclaimed pianist Chi-Chen Wu, and the dynamism of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. This program also includes the US premiere of “Resiliens”, a work by composer Felipe Oliveira, selected as the winner of LCO’s 2025 International Call-for-Scores.

The season concludes in June 2026 with the annual Pride Month and a renewed celebration of LGBTQ artistry in “Pride: A Rainbow of Artistry.”

As part of LCO's mission to increase the cultural footprint of the city of Lowell, LCO runs two competitions to help promote the careers of young talent

LOWELL, Mass., April 21, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Lowell Chamber Orchestra (LCO) is proud to announce the winners of its fourth international young artist competition. Cellist William Suh won first prize, soprano Emma Robertson won second prize, and oboist Anqi Zhou won third prize. As part of his winning, Suh will be performing with LCO during next season.

Six judges chose three winners from among 194 entries from all over the world. “The level of playing is astounding,” says Music Director Orlando Cela. “We the judges had a very difficult time deciding who should receive which prize. In nominating Muhoza for this prestigious award, faculty members applauded his innovation and dedication, noting that he “has made substantial contributions to the scientific community and beyond during his fellowship, setting a new standard for postdoctoral excellence.”

Mr. Oliveira is a Brazilian composer, pianist and music educator, holds a PhD in Music Composition from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He was a 2019–20 Fulbright Visiting Researcher at LSU, and has received several composition awards in Brazil, USA, Germany, Portugal, Canada, Ireland and Denmark.

Lowell Chamber Orchestra to premiere new edition of Julia Perry’s symphony

Two soloists, Yukiko Shimazaki on piano, and Nikki Huang on marimba - winner of the 2023 LCO Concerto Competition - will also be featured.

Lowell Chamber Orchestra Receives Three-Year Funding for Advancement Of BIPOC Composers

Barr's new Creative Vitality grant program builds on the Foundation's racial equity work to date and their commitment to centering BIPOC artists, organizations, and communities in their program strategies. Guided By Voices Fans to Celebrate Band at Special Boston-Area Event

BOSTON, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The venerable indie rock band Guided By Voices (GBV) recently celebrated 40 years of music with several thousand fans in its hometown of Dayton, Ohio, performing two sold-out shows at the Dayton Masonic Center over Labor Day weekend. In the spirit of bringing that celebration to Boston, four local fans (calling themselves the Textbook Committee) have organized Forever Since Heedfest, which brings three GBV tribute bands and diehard fans from near and far to Warehouse XI in Somerville, MA this February.

The "Dayton GBV40" weekend saw some fans attending from as far away as Australia, and the city of Dayton was alive with the camaraderie of fans that insist online - tongue-in-cheek - that the fanbase is #notacult. In between performances, hundreds trekked to the Bandshell at Metro Park, the site of the first Guided By Voices show in 1983, and otherwise joined together in groups small and large to celebrate the band and its history. One local fan even opened his home to about 100 fans, who took in an afternoon performance from Teenage FBI, a GBV tribute band led by superfan Stephen Risley.

On February 10, the New Jersey-based Teenage FBI will join GBV tribute bands Cul de Sac Kids of Pittsburgh and hometown headliner Guided By Choices for Forever Since Heedfest, a regional celebration intended to bridge the gap between the annual Labor Day weekend "Heedfest" fan gatherings in Dayton. Tickets went on sale November 10 and in GBV fan fashion are moving fast, with fans from as far away as Seattle confirming attendance.

While loose discussion of a Boston event has circulated among local fans for several years, the seeds of Forever Since Heedfest, a playful riff on the band's 1986 debut EP Forever Since Breakfast, were firmly planted over the Dayton GBV40 weekend. Earlier this month, longtime fans Allison Ryder, Brian Galante, Dan Cortez and Tim Bugbee formed the Textbook Committee to plan and promote the event. The task is not a revenue-generating initiative; it is simply a labor of love for four friends with full-time jobs unrelated to concert promotion.

"Guided By Voices has a special community of diehard and casual fans that come together for shows throughout the United States and share a common bond - a love of the songbook and the band members themselves, who return that love with up to three hours of music at each show," said Ryder, the natural leader of the Textbook Committee, who has traveled to seven states to see GBV live since 2021. "Something unspoken happens when the fans come together, as was in strong evidence at GBV40 last summer. We want to bring that camaraderie to Boston, even if on a much smaller scale."

"The ultimate hope is to establish an annual tradition here in Boston that can be replicated and evolved by fans in other cities," added Cortez, a longtime fan with playful anecdotes of spending time with the band offstage as far back as the 1990s.

GBV bandleader Robert Pollard - GBV's principal songwriter and vocalist over four decades - regularly acknowledges his fans from the stage, clearly absorbing the crowd's adoration and reflecting it back through his energetic performances and trademark high leg kicks. Pollard and his bandmates - lead guitarist Doug Gillard, rhythm guitarist Bobby Bare Jr., bassist Mark Shue, and drummer Kevin March - share another common thread with the GBV fanbase: A love of Miller Lite, which the band liberally consumes from the stage at nearly every show.

There will be plenty of Miller Lite and other adult (and non-alcoholic) beverage options at the three-hour event, which begins at 7:30pm that Saturday evening. Additional bands are in discussions to join the bill at press time, and the Textbook Committee is also planning an art and photography display to add visual flair to the proceedings. That includes professional imagery of GBV in action taken by Bugbee, who moonlights as a live music photographer.

The event is 21+ and open to all.

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra Inaugurates Fifth Season with a Concert that Redefines the Symphony

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra opens its fifth season Saturday, September 16, 2023, with music that redefines the symphony as genre. The evening will feature music by Brittney Benton, Yoko Nakatani, Vincent Persichetti, and Arnold Schönberg, bringing a historical approach to the ever changing façade of this genre.

Both Benton and Nakatani are very active composers who were commissioned by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra back in 2020 - at the height of the pandemic - to write works for "Lowell Threads," an initiative by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra to enlist composer into writing works around a particular genre. In this case, Nakatani, Benton, and two other composers, were asked to write works in response to the eccentric chamber symphonies of Darius Milhaud. The results was the album "Miniature Symphonies." On Saturday, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra will perform in public these two pieces since the recording's release in 2021.

The concert begins with Nakatani's one-movement "La Giclée" takes its inspiration from the joy of children as they splash through water, and produced a homage to George Gershwin in a short work that requires an unusual seating arrangement. Benton's "The Sentinel" is the musical telling of a fantastic tale in which a stone golem guards the entrance to a town, and the different movements as the creature slumbers, awakens. The evening will end with Arnold Schönberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1, the work that started a trend in which composers had to learn to use much smaller forces than usual because of World War I.

The concert will also feature Adam Gallant, principal trumpet of the Lowell Chamber Orchestra, as a soloist in Persichetti's "The Hollow Men." This piece, while not technically a symphony, encompasses the profoundly deep meaning of the T. S. Eliot poem that inspired it.

As always, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra is presenting this concert for free, but donations are most necessary in order to keep its mission of providing the best of classical music without a socio-economic boundary to the Lowell population.
