A Newly Discovered Vulnerability of Python Parsing Library Allows Check Bypassing

SUNNYVALE, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- A vulnerability has been discovered in Python's native urllib.parse function (CVE-2023-24329) by cybersecurity researcher Yebo Cao. This vulnerability has the potential to enable server-side request forgery (SSRF) and remote code execution (RCE) in a wide range of scenarios by bypassing the protections set by the developer for scheme and host.

Cao, a master's student at Carnegie Mellon University, owns an Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) certificate and is one of the top 100 security researchers at Bugcrowd. He found that the urllib.parse function has a parsing issue that affects the parsing of the hostname and scheme, causing blocklisting and allowlisting methods to fail.

urllib.parse is a basic URL parsing function widely used in various applications, and one of Python's core functions is urlparse. This issue is caused when the entire URL starts with blank characters.

"I personally think the impact of this vulnerability is huge because this urlparse() library is widely used," Cao said. "Although allowlisting and blocklisting are commonly used security mechanisms in software development, in the affected version of Python's urllib.parse function, the vulnerability can be exploited to bypass the protections set by the developer for scheme and host. This vulnerability can be expected to help SSRF and RCE in a wide range of scenarios."

Blocklisting and allowlisting are commonly used security mechanisms that help to prevent unauthorized access or actions. Allowlisting is a mechanism that allows only certain things, such as IP addresses, domain names, or file types, while blocklisting is a mechanism that prevents access to certain things, such as websites or file extensions. However, the vulnerability in the affected version of Python's urllib.parse function can render both of these mechanisms ineffective, thus increasing the risk of exploitation.

AI-Based Transit Signal Prioritization Helps Buses in Silicon Valley Get Residents Living in Zero-Vehicle Households to Destinations Faster

With funding from C/CAG, Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) formed a coalition of public and private stakeholders including San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), the City of East Palo Alto and technology company LYT, to deliver intelligent transit priority along congested arteries in transit-dependent communities. The City of East Palo Alto is a place where such improvements are most needed and can potentially improve the quality of life for residents.

SSV successfully led the pilot project, creating a blueprint for future investments in regional bus systems. The SSV/ LYT team will present the project findings in a Special Presentation to the City of East Palo Alto City Council at the September 20th, 2022, City Council meeting.

The efficiency of local transit has a direct impact on communities such as East Palo Alto which is designated as an Equity Priority Community by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). This designation is in part due to the number of Zero-Vehicle Households, meaning households that do not own a personal vehicle making it a challenge to get to work, school, etc. In East Palo Atlo, 9% of households do not have a vehicle compared to 6% countywide in San Mateo.

For the pilot project, the coalition deployed LYT's Artificial Intelligence-powered Transit Signal Priority (TSP) technology, called LYT.transit, on a corridor consisting of four signalized intersections in East Palo Alto. This corridor is a subsection of SamTrans route 281 and includes the following intersections: University Ave. at Bay Rd., Runnymede St., Bell St., and Donohoe St.

The iTSP deployment on University Ave. yielded a significant positive impact on several key performance indicators:

* iTSP reduced northbound intersection delays by 45% and southbound intersection delays by 19%.

* These reductions translate to 18% and 7% reductions in travel time for northbound and southbound respectively.

Bringing cities, agencies and tech together around some of the big challenges facing under-represented communities is itself a powerful tool.

Appvance IQ Available Now Through Hitachi Solutions – AI-driven autonomous application testing

Background

As digital transformation is becoming pervasive in Japan, more companies have implemented the methodologies and tools of agile development and DevOps, which can make application development speedier. Child Sexual Abuse Settlements Obtained from St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School in The Silicon Valley

SAN MATEO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Stop School Sexual Abuse (SSSA) announced settlements today of claims totaling more than $1.25 million for two survivors of child sexual abuse by a pre-kindergarten teacher at St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School in San Mateo, California. SSSA volunteers worked with the parties in these claims.

St. Matthew's teacher Anthony Satriano pled no contest to five felony counts of lewd and lascivious conduct, attempted lewd and lascivious conduct and using a child for sexual purposes. The victims, all students at St. Matthew's Episcopal Day School, ranged from 5 to 8 years old and were abused on school grounds during official school activities. Satriano was sentenced to 6 years in state prison and is currently incarcerated at San Quentin Penitentiary.

The survivors alleged that St. Matthew's and Head of School Julie Galles failed to supervise Satriano, allowing him to be alone with students whenever he desired, during which time he took thousands of lewd pictures and videos of young girl students, some of whom he posed or dressed in "encasement" bondage outfits. Satriano sexually abused the students in his classroom and in public school spaces during official school activities (regular class time, after-school enrichment programs, after care or extended care, and school camps).

The cases also alleged that St Matthew's and its employees, including Head of School Galles, ignored Satriano's inappropriate physical contact with students and grooming conduct, failed to have child protection policies and procedures in place, and hired staff that did not meet legally-mandated minimum qualifications. The cases alleged that St. Matthew's and Head of School Galles received many complaints about security but elected to ignore them. These settlements are separate from previously announced settlements.

SecuGen to Demonstrate Apple iOS Compatibility with New Unity 20 Bluetooth Fingerprint Reader at ISC West 2019

SANTA CLARA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- SecuGen, a world leading optical fingerprint device and technology vendor, will be demonstrating the new Unity(tm) 20 Bluetooth fingerprint reader with Apple's iOS at the ISC West 2019 in Las Vegas, the largest converged security industry trade show in the U.S.

The Unity 20 Bluetooth is the world's first elegantly designed, low cost, fully programmable Bluetooth fingerprint reader. This versatile device features SecuGen's new flagship U20-A fingerprint sensor found in the Hamster Pro 20 product family but with Bluetooth capability that allows it to securely transfer fingerprint data wirelessly to a smartphone, tablet or computer. It is sleek and small enough to be carried in your pocket as a mobile fingerprint reader or placed solidly at a workstation as a traditional desktop reader.

SecuGen's Unity 20 Bluetooth reader is now compatible with Apple's iOS mobile operating system. Apple developers can easily build fingerprint biometric applications for the iPhone and iPad that work with the Unity 20 Bluetooth. The Unity 20 Bluetooth can be used right out of the box by calling SecuGen's Fingerprint Management System (FMS) software's simple API. Alternatively, it can be custom programmed to suit the needs of the targeted user base.

Internally the product includes a complete Linux development environment, SecuGen's fingerprint capture and NIST MINEX-compliant template extraction and matching algorithms, the OpenSSL cryptography library, and a 1 GHz CPU. The Unity 20 Bluetooth can also store encrypted fingerprint templates and process them in a closed environment without ever leaving the device.
