Study Highlights New Competition in Wear Coatings

Wear Coatings

NEW YORK, N.Y., Dec. 21, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Thintri, Inc. (www.thintri.com) has announced a new market study that projects significant opportunities for new technologies in wear coatings. The report, "Wear Coatings: Hard Chrome and Its Alternatives, 2016," highlights the movement from traditional hard chrome and even common chrome replacements like thermal spray to an array of new technologies that care poised to capture significant markets in wear coating applications.

Traditional hard chrome plating has relied on the use of hexavalent chromium solutions, which have been related to significant health and environmental hazards. Tightened restrictions on hex chrome resulted in growing interest in alternatives to chrome. The main chrome replacement coating has been thermal spray, particularly HVOF. Both hard chrome plating and thermal spray applied to wear coatings have continued to grow in recent years.

Now, however, the situation is changing. For the first time, in this, the fifth version of Thintri's original 2003 chrome alternatives market study, hard chrome alternatives are poised to actually penetrate traditional hex chrome wear coating markets to the point of leading to a decline in hard hex chromes sales within the decade. The limitations of both hard chrome and thermal spray have made users of both technologies eager to find satisfactory alternatives.

A number of such alternatives have entered the market or will very soon. Chief among them is hard trivalent chrome, a long-sought method of plating chrome without using hazardous hexavalent chrome. For established users of hexavalent chrome, functional trivalent chrome presents basically the same coating, albeit at somewhat greater cost. Chrome platers can transition from hexavalent to trivalent chrome with a modest capital investment.

Trivalent chrome promises to be a game-changing technology by itself, but may be limited by a growing reluctance to use chromium in any form, simply out of concern that future regulations may limit its use.

Other new wear coating technologies are now available that offer significant advantages.

For example, plated technologies based on cobalt, such as electrodeposited nanocrystalline cobalt-phosphorus (NCoP), involves raw materials that are significantly more costly than chrome. However, the efficiency of the process is more than 90%, compared to 20% for chrome, and throughputs are higher, more than making up for the higher up-front costs. And the coatings offer essentially the same hardness. The NCoP coating technology is now commercially available.

Other processes, like electroless nickel (EN) offer their own advantages. For example, EN composite coatings can improve their wear properties by adding small particles. Teflon particles can be added to the solution to improve lubricity, or by adding diamond or silicon carbide particles to greatly improve wear resistance. Electroless nickel and electroless nickel composite coatings are also now commercially available.

Thintri's market study analyzes the applications and markets for wear coatings, highlighting new opportunities and discussing the impact of new technologies. Forecasts to 2022 are provided.

Manufacturing Impact Recognized by State and Local Officials

Governor Terry Branstad

OSCEOLA, Iowa, Oct. 12, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- With a visit to Altec, Inc. in Osceola, Iowa last month, Governor Terry Branstad doubled up the perception of positive manufacturing growth throughout Southern Iowa. Quickly following up an agribusiness / manufacturing visit to the community from Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, the feeling in Osceola and surrounding communities is recent manufacturing growth is making a significant impact.

"While the market may soft right now, it's nice to see companies creating jobs and maintaining a level of work that can support a growing community like Osceola." Branstad said during a recent visit to Altec, Inc.

Not only was October 2nd National Manufacturer's day, but Osceola, Iowa's Mayor, Fred Diehl took the recognition one step further to proclaim the entire month of October as Manufacturers' Month throughout the City.

Diehl stated, "Manufacturing jobs provide Osceola and Clarke County, Iowa with a payroll of over $51 Million in annual wages. We certainly want to recognize the importance of our manufacturing community."

During The Governor's visit to Altec, Branstad took the time to tour the recently updated plant and spend time discussing details of the company, it's growth throughout it's 86 year history, and the impact their presence in Osceola and Southern Iowa has had.

"One of the unique challenges the team had," explained Mark Wegel, Altec's Director of Corporate Communications, "Was restructuring the management staff and workforce from the previous company to increase efficiencies and profitability under Altec's management to meet our production goals."

From the buyout in January of 2014 to present day, the manufacturing output from the Osceola's Altec facility has grown from a couple dozen fiberglass body components per month to over 100 units in recent months. This increase in volume is directly attributed to the strategies the new Altec management team created and the aggressive recruiting and candidate evaluations that have taken place over the last year.

"Our business is growing so fast that they have to try to get the right numbers in to meet the demand we've seen in recent months." Wegel continued. "With the number of manufacturing programs available locally, we see this kind of growth potential not slowing down soon."

Bill Trickey from The Clarke County Development Corporation (CCDC) also brought information to the table for the Governor and the Altec team, illustrating an aggressive trade education program being developed through the CCDC, Clarke Community Schools, and local businesses.

"We're aware of the demand for additional workforce, and who better to train for these jobs, than local students and the community surrounding these companies? We're making sure the students are aware of the opportunities for work in Clarke County and Osceola and that a steady supply of young people are prepared for these important positions." Trickey stated.

Branstad went on to provide insight on additional programs available through Iowa Workforce Development and Iowa Department of Economic Development for manufacturing trade training programs and recruiting throughout the state.

Based on recent statistics from Iowa Workforce Development, the average annual manufacturing wage in Osceola is $46,483, compared to the County average of $34,000. The growth specific to this sector is partially attributed to new companies entering the community like Altec and others.

As manufacturing throughout Clarke County and Osceola continues to grow, the opportunities for job growth as well as increases in income for the community look abundant. Additional jobs and increases are projected to grow at a steady rate throughout Southern Iowa making a significant impact on the entire area.

As Branstad closed the meeting, he went on to say, "We're excited to see companies like Altec lay foundation in our state. We're always looking for great partnerships to help grow our communities and help future generations sustain Iowa's way of life."

For more information on Altec, contact Carl Christiansen, 1001 Furnas Drive, Osceola, IA 50213, phone: 641-342-3456. Website: http://www.altec.com/.

Iowa Ag Sec. Northey Sees Business Standing Strong Through Soft Ag Market

IA Ag Secretary Northey

OSCEOLA, Iowa, Sept. 2, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey made a stop at Salford USA in Osceola, Iowa Wednesday afternoon. Taking time from his busy schedule, Secretary Northey wanted to make sure he continued his discussions with agribusiness professionals and hear, firsthand, the issues they face during the downturn in the Ag market.

During his 2-hour visit and tour, Northey had conversations with Operations Manager, Robert (Tom) Kober, Plant Manager, Randy Beckett, as well as Clarke County Development Corporation's (CCDC) Executive Director, Bill Trickey. Much of the dialogue was focused on the volatility of today's Ag environment and its affect on manufacturing and the local economy, as well as Salford's positive impact on Osceola's economy and growing workforce.

When asked about the recent market downturn and how he saw it affecting businesses, Northey said, "There are a lot of people still buying, maybe repairing used equipment, but it's not like everyone's shutting down. I've talked to people that have said 'I've been conservative, paid stuff down, and now's the time to trade or upgrade equipment.'"

For Salford, while the softer market has been noticeable, the impact hasn't been as bad. Through strategic planning and seasonal sales preparations, Kober assured Northey that numbers were looking good, even in the down cycle, which means they'd positioned themselves to benefit even more when the market rebounds.

"This will be a different market," Kober stated, "Salford brings something so different to the game - even with additional sales staffing - we've positioned ourselves where we can benefit - and be a benefit - throughout these changes."

Canadian-owned Salford Manufacturing moved their USA operations to Osceola in 2007 and soon after showed the company's focus on integrity, quality, and support of their employees was a priority. Bill Trickey explained, "CCDC gave them our Board of Director's award because, even during the downturn, they kept their employees on - cleaning, painting, and what-not. And when things picked up, instead of hiring new guys, they gave 'em overtime and helped make the changes needed to make ends meet. That's why they're one of our favorites."

Salford USA staffs 40-45 tradesmen and manufacturing specialists out of Osceola, Iowa. Their primary product is their I-Series secondary tillage products, including field cultivators, fertilizer applicators, coulters, and other field production attachments. Their company's foundation in Ag manufacturing, along with their founder's "Don't touch it unless we can make it better" attitude positions them perfectly for rapid growth and impact in a highly competitive U.S. Ag Manufacturing market.

"One thing that separates us from {the others} is the quality and strength of our equipment," said Randy Beckett, Plant Manager, "If it never breaks, and you can run it for ten years, you have something that's pretty valuable. And that's something farmers understand."

For more information on Salford USA, contact Robert (Tom) Kober, Operations Manager, Salford, Inc., 925 Furnas Drive, Osceola, IA 50213. Phone: 641-432-6036, email: tom.kober@salfordmachine.com, web: http://www.SalfordMachine.com/.

Silicon Valley Technology to Fuel a Craft Spirits Revolution Inspiring Innovation against Beer and Wine

Lost Spirits

SILICON VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 19, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Lost Spirits Technologies announces today that it has successfully scaled its experimental distilled spirits aging system and is preparing to begin a nationwide roll out of the revolutionary new technology in October 2015. The system will be implemented through the use of small, portable aging reactors dubbed the THEA One. THEA One offers a revolutionary, state of the art way of designing and engineering the quality of aged spirits, and will be installed in craft distilleries across the country.

In April of 2015, Lost Spirits announced that it had successfully replicated the chemical signature and taste profile of 20-year-old rum in a laboratory setting. Since then, the engineering team has been working around the clock to create a scaled working reactor that is capable of producing spirits at commercially viable quantities. Today this task has been accomplished.

Lost Spirits currently has 65 distilleries on its waiting list and is in talks to potentially implement the technology on a grand scale with multinational spirits partners.

Lost Spirits will be hosting private media tours to showcase the THEA One and her capabilities at the notoriously secretive Lost Spirit hilltop laboratory throughout September. Interested parties may inquire for a sneak peek at the first THEA One models. For those who cannot attend, media kits can also be requested which contain samples and equipment overview using Google Cardboard in VR.

About Lost Spirits Technologies:

AMMCO-Hennessy Handed First Asbestos Defeat by Weitz and Luxenberg

consumer protection law

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Aug. 14, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- A Los Angeles County Superior Court jury this month handed Hennessy Industries, Inc. as successor to AMMCO Tools, Inc., its first-ever loss in an asbestos-exposure lawsuit despite the defendant company's self-assurances that the grieving family of an Army veteran and automotive parts store owner who died of mesothelioma had no chance of winning, victorious plaintiffs' law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C., today announced.

"The verdict against AMMCO and Hennessy represents the first time the companies have been held liable for an asbestos-exposure injury or death," said first-chair trial attorney Mark D. Bratt, who, with second-chair attorney Peter Beirne, led the Weitz & Luxenberg trial team.

The Aug. 3 jury decision in the Chatsworth-area courtroom of the Hon. Randy Rhodes capped a three-week trial in which the family blamed AMMCO and Hennessy for the store owner's death in 2012, Weitz & Luxenberg said.

The husband and father was stricken with mesothelioma after years of inhaling asbestos dust spewed into the air while he machined asbestos-containing brake shoes in a corner of his shop, the firm said.

AMMCO is the Hennessy-owned manufacturer of the brake grinders he used in performing that work, according to the firm.

No Escape From Asbestos Liability:

Bratt and Beirne said they presented compelling evidence that AMMCO knew its brake grinder posed a grave health hazard yet advertised it as safe.

"AMMCO started manufacturing brake grinders in 1950," said Bratt. "These grinders employed a rudimentary, reusable porous cloth dust bag which had to be manually emptied by workers. In its advertisements from that era, AMMCO claimed this bag prevented 'bothersome and dangerous flying dusts.'"

However, in 1973, AMMCO tests showed workers were being exposed to millions of asbestos fibers despite the dust bag system, and so the company designed a new dust-collector system, Bratt explained.

In patent applications obtained by Weitz & Luxenberg, AMMCO described and acknowledged design defects in the original containment system, admitting it created "a definite health hazard", Bratt said.

"AMMCO never even tested its original dust bag system with regard to asbestos exposure and safety, so the company had no factual basis for its advertising claim," Bratt added. "Nonetheless, AMMCO was aware prior to 1950 when it introduced the product that asbestos was dangerous. And despite all that, AMMCO continued to sell the original porous cloth bag as a replacement product until at least 1983."

Worse, said Bratt, "AMMCO never contacted grinder owners to warn them of the dangers of using the old dust-collector system, never issued a recall of the grinders, never offered to retrofit them with the new dust-collection system, never put a warning on the replacement dust bags it continued to sell, nothing."

Mesothelioma Death a Bitter Loss to Family:

Bratt said the wife and two surviving sons of the auto parts store owner were devastated by his death from mesothelioma, an extraordinarily aggressive form of cancer.

"He was a loving husband who every morning would pick a fresh grapefruit from their yard for his wife's breakfast," Bratt said. "They were high-school sweethearts back in their native South Dakota. They got married not long after he completed his service in the Army more than 50 years ago, and then moved to the Los Angeles area. They were best friends, loved to travel, and enjoyed a simple life together."

The man's exposure to asbestos dust began in the early 1960s while he was working with AMMCO brake grinders in various Southern California automotive supply houses where he learned the trade, Bratt said.

In 1971, the man opened his own auto parts store and outfitted it with an AMMCO brake grinder. He operated it often, said Bratt.

The jury found the defendants liable for, among other things, negligence and strict products liability, Weitz & Luxenberg reported.

"Importantly, this verdict proves that a company cannot design a product which necessarily creates a hazard when used with another product and escape responsibility," Bratt offered.

"This verdict also reaffirms that there are basic steps a responsible company must take before putting a product onto the market," he continued, "such as performing research, conducting tests, designing and engineering products appropriately, and avoid making baseless claims about safety. In short, companies cannot put profits ahead of people."

Clarke County Labor Study Reveals Higher Income Potential

manufacturing jobs

OSCEOLA, Iowa, Aug. 4, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Clarke County Development Corporation (CCDC) recently released its "Scorecard on Jobs and Compensation Update for 2004 to 2014." The report shows, over a the last decade, the average income level for manufacturing jobs in Clarke County consistently outpaced average county compensation levels.

Even through the economic downturns seen in 2007, 2008 and later, salary levels in the manufacturing sector increased by $15,000 to $46,000 whereas average County income levels progressed slower with increases of $9,000 to $34,000.

This study reveals, through concerted efforts from the CCDC and local business leadership, job sustainability, specifically in manufacturing, helped support the community through our recent recession and shows to be a staple for a stronger economic future.

Bill Trickey, CEO of Clarke County Development Corporation, said, "We knew Clarke County and Osceola had great potential for building a sustainable manufacturing base in southern Iowa. With the unique assets our county provides, from transportation to land and infrastructure access, businesses can be secure in offering compensation that is competitive with much larger areas."

Research has shown, compensation levels for Clarke County compared to other similarly sized communities are as much as 8 percent to 10 percent higher. When averaging manufacturing jobs within the county, county-wide payroll levels for those jobs, as well as the average earnings within that county, Clarke surpasses surrounding county rates at $22.32 per hour per job whereas Jasper, Union, and Madison counties fall short at $20 or less.

"While other communities need to rely heavily on ag, retail, and other sectors for their income base, Clarke County is able to take advantage of our unique location and resources to help manufacturing really grow here," Trickey Said.

Based on these reports, if future compensation rates stay consistent with the last decade, manufacturing employment and earning potentials will continue to surge in Clarke County. As the National economy continues to recover, the steady growth and compensation potential for Clarke County and Osceola are positioned to lead the state across all economic recovery and growth charts.

Since 1969, the Clarke County Development Corporation (CCDC) has worked with local government and businesses, recruiting and establishing new industry and business for the area to augment employment and growth opportunities for the residents of Clarke County and Osceola, Iowa.

The drying system consolidates resin handling and pre-conditioning into a central area, allowing material changes to take place quickly, cleanly, and safely away from the processing machine.

"The ResinWorks system allow us to dramatically decrease the amount of time it takes to dry the materials we use in the injection molding process," says Dave Gagnon, Director of Operations at Proto Plastics. "This means we're able to move through molding jobs faster due to less time spent on the drying that happens between molding operations."

The simplified resin dehumidification is the heart of the ResinWorks system, where multiple hoppers are supplied on a common pre-plumbed, pre-wired sled, and connected to a dehumidifying dryer to provide superior drying and maximum productivity. Individual sleds are connected to form an efficient, centralized resin drying area supplying Proto Plastics's injection molding machines, with a wide array of dried resins.

"There are cost savings benefits to this for sure," says Gagnon. "We now have one dryer for 4 hoppers, so the ResinWorks drying system eliminates the use of 3 individual dryers, saving energy and money."

Plastic injection molding is an extremely competitive industry, so cost savings that can be passed along to the customer are essential to business growth. The drying system which went online in May, has already begun delivering benefits from its introduction within the Proto Plastics injection molding operation.

New Technologies Poised to Create Billion-Dollar Markets

emerging technologies

NEW YORK, N.Y., March 2, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- A series of market investigations by Thintri, Inc. (www.thintri.com) has revealed significant new opportunities in several emerging technologies. These studies have uncovered three technologies that are projected to undergo dramatic market growth through the decade, moving rapidly from very modest, or even non-existent, markets to billion-dollar levels within the next five to 10 years.

The opportunities are analyzed in Thintri's Market Alerts, a series of shorter, concise market studies focusing on new or previously overlooked technologies that are poised to make a significant impact in the near future.

TV White Space:

Television White Space refers to the frequency bands residing between broadcast television channels that have been freed up by the move to digital television, and made available by the FCC for unlicensed use in telecommunications. The technology, which has already been proven in a number of deployments, comes at a time when conventional wireless networks are approaching saturation, when demand is growing at more than 100 percent per year. This bandwidth crunch results not only from burgeoning consumer smartphone use, but also new applications like the Internet of Things and Machine-to-Machine communications.

TV White Space can provide relief, with the potential to offer Exabytes per month of added capacity in this decade. It also offers potentially highly profitable solutions in bringing broadband wireless access to rural and underserved populations, as well as wide area and metropolitan networks.

Graphene-Based Lubricants:

Graphene, a two-dimensional array of carbon atoms, offers a number of fascinating properties. It is the thinnest material ever found, it's hundreds of times stronger than steel and offers extraordinary electronic properties. Graphene offers the potential to remake entire industries, but none more so than lubricants. Graphene is chemically inert and offers high mechanical strength, and can be applied to nanoscale devices or macro-scale machinery, all with significant advantages over established lubricants.

Graphene-based lubricants can be applied as solid coatings deposited on surfaces exposed to friction, or used as an additive to fluid lubricants. Compared to conventional lubricants, graphene-based lubricants can reduce wear by as much as four orders of magnitude with relative insensitivity to environmental conditions. No other known solid lubricant can reduce friction and wear as effectively as graphene. Graphene-based lubricants were initially held back by high prices but with the plummeting price of graphene, graphene-based lubricants are ready to capture multi-billion dollar markets within the present decade.

Paper Electronics and Paper Batteries:

Paper electronics, the printing of electronic devices, circuits and displays on cheap, disposable paper substrates, is rapidly approaching commercialization and offers the promise of creating large, entirely new markets. Of course paper electronics will never duplicate silicon's performance, but that's not the point. While performance will be limited, costs will be so low that electronics and displays will find themselves in applications undreamt of until now. Roll-to-roll printing will print electronic circuits on paper substrates faster than an Olympic sprinter can run, enabling incredibly high volume production.

Paper electronics will bring intelligence to innumerable applications that today are strictly low tech. For example, ordinary packaging will incorporate displays running videos on product operation; small, disposable tabs will quickly diagnose disease in the patient's home; business cards will update themselves or show a person's present location; retail security will include technically sophisticated mechanisms that cost pennies; billboards and signage will be easily updated and include full-motion video; and many other applications will be made possible and extremely inexpensive.

The greatest revenue opportunity will be paper batteries and ultracapacitors. Paper has long been used in power capacitors, but can also be made into lightweight, robust and powerful batteries that can be rolled or folded into nearly any shape, able to accommodate the most constrained form factors, such as in cell phones. Paper ultracapacitors can efficiently deliver tremendous bursts of power, a necessity in some applications like electric vehicles, biometric ATM cards or small devices sending wireless signals. Markets for paper electronics and paper batteries will likely approach billion-dollar levels within 10 years.

Thintri's Market Alerts highlight extraordinary opportunities for investment and revenue in fast-changing markets by technologies that are poised to revolutionize entire industries. More details can be found at http://www.thintri.com/ .

California Landfill Reduces Environmental Impact and Saves Money

Portola Landfill

PORTOLA, Calif., Feb. 4, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Agru America, Inc. announced that the city of Portola, Calif. is now using its exclusive EPA Subtitle D compliant landfill closure system - ClosureTurf(R).

The landfill site located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, recently completed an eight-acre final closure. The site is the second application in the state to use ClosureTurf(R), specifically designed to eliminate soil erosion, reduce post-closure maintenance costs, increase slope integrity and enhance landfill gas (LFG) management.

Throughout the process, Agru and its partner, Watershed Geosynthetics LLC, provided the city council and public with support on implementing the state's approved ClosureTurf(R) system for use as a final cover for the landfill. During the process, questions arose. For example, cost was a concern. While the construction cost of the system was similar to a traditional Subtitle D closure, the City of Portola would actually save on future maintenance costs, while reducing the environmental impact and improving safety and performance.

Officials at the landfill had to address significant challenges including ground water issues and a short construction window. The project was bid in August 2014 and installed in just six weeks that fall. This included the removal of the temporary liner along with subgrade preparation and installation of the entire ClosureTurf(R) system.

Todd Roberts, director of public works for the city said, "Everyone involved with the project was great to work with and we were happy with the installation of the system. Everything is performing as expected."

Tom Valentino, PE, president of TGV Solid Waste, Inc., Portola's solid waste consultant, reported that prior to ClosureTurf(R) becoming available, they had looked at the traditional Subtitle D vegetative cap. However, one of the greatest advantages of ClosureTurf(R) was avoiding long-term maintenance costs.

Ease of installation was also a plus because the city was under tight time constraints to get the project completed.

"Coincidentally, there was a storm the night the project was completed and we got the project done on time," Valentino said. "We chose a tan color that blended with the surroundings. From a short-term stability standpoint and a long-term post closure maintenance cost, the ClosureTurf(R) System was the absolute right decision to make for the Portola landfill."

Additionally, the landfill is located in a seismic zone with potentially high snowfall events. In the event of seismic activity or significant snowfall melt, the soil used in a traditional capping system would present a significant slide hazard. Cal Valley Construction (Fresno, Calif.) was the general contractor and infill installer, along with D&E Construction (Visalia, Calif.) - the approved ClosureTurf(R) installer.

"From a construction quality assurance perspective, installation of the ClosureTurf cover system required less field personnel during construction than a traditional prescriptive cover system and saved the city money," Jake Russell, P.E., Geo-Logic Associates, Portola's CQA consulting firm, said. "The installation of the ClosureTurf(R) cover was completed in significantly less time than other similarly-sized prescriptive subtitle D vegetative cap landfill cover systems in which I have been involved. By removing the soil components of the cover system, construction issues associated with the variability and availability of soil materials were eliminated."

About ClosureTurf(R):

ClosureTurf(R) is an innovative and economical final cover system designed for waste containment which eliminates soil erosion, increases slope integrity, enhances gas collection, and lowers maintenance costs. ClosureTurf(R) was developed by Watershed Geosynthetics LLC and is sold exclusively by Agru America, Inc. First installed in 2009, this innovative technology has continued to gain more acceptance in the waste industry as an increasing number of owners, agencies and engineers have approved its use in multiple states over the past five years. Once installed, a landfill is converted from a mountain of unsightly trash to one that is much more aesthetically pleasing.

About Agru America, Inc.:

Milk Jugs and Marijuana: The first recycled and recyclable packaging manufactured specifically for the legal cannabis industry

Terrapin Care Station

DENVER, Colo., Sept. 30, 2014 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In response to the estimated 287,279 pounds of legal marijuana that will be sold in Colorado this year and the millions of containers used to package it, Higher Standard Packaging of Denver announced today the introduction of the first eco-friendly containers composed of FDA-approved, recycled milk jug plastic and manufactured specifically for the marijuana industry.

R2 Containers are created from recycled milk jugs consisting of 100 percent high-density polyethylene (HDPE-2). Manufactured in the U.S. and BPA free, this resin meets stringent purity standards through a patented cleaning process that eliminates all contaminants without exposing the resin to any chemical treatments or processes. The FDA has approved the recycled resin for food contact.

The resin meets strict sustainability standards and according to EPA data, it accounts for far less environmental impact than virgin resin used in other containers. Production of recycled resin uses 90 percent less energy and emits 78 percent less greenhouse gases than virgin resin.

Higher Standard Packaging announced that Terrapin Care Station, with two dispensaries in Boulder and two dispensaries opening in Aurora, will be the first cannabis company in the nation to package marijuana using R2 Containers.

Christine Kirk, with a degree in environmental science and the packaging manager for Terrapin Care Station, inspired the search for more environmentally-friendly packaging last January as she watched thousands of plastic bottles leave the dispensaries.

Terrapin Care Station places recycling receptacles in its dispensaries to help minimize the environmental impact of its containers, but Kirk stated, "Collecting used bottles just isn't enough to address the environmental implications of creating and using virgin plastic resin to manufacture all of the containers needed to package marijuana and marijuana-infused products. Our industry needs an eco-friendly container that can be recycled and won't affect the recycling stream adversely."

Chris Woods, owner of Terrapin Care Station dispensaries, said, "This new solution makes us feel better about fostering an environmentally-friendly approach to child-proof marijuana packaging while maintaining the freshness of our high quality products for consumers." Tara Riseley, Terrapin's Brand Manager, added she is "excited to round out Terrapin's sustainability efforts."

Echoing the need for more environmentally friendly packaging Morgan Iwersen, an edibles manufacturer and owner of Canyon Cultivation in Denver said, "It is our responsibility as manufacturers to be positive examples for not only our industry but all industries when it comes to the role we play in our nation's carbon footprint. Utilizing an eco-friendly container that also provides child-resistant closures is a no brainer."

Julie Dooley, president and co-creator of Julie's Baked Goods in Denver, added, "Julie's Baked Goods is excited to see a product which addresses the issue of environmental waste with packaging within our industry. Reducing our carbon footprint is a priority for Julie's Baked Goods, and it is encouraging to see other entrepreneurs working toward the same priority."

Higher Standard Packaging, doing business under the umbrella of d&b consulting, llc, was founded in Denver, Colorado last February by Barbara Diner and Deborah Baker. "Our company caters to finding packaging solutions for the cannabis industry, and these containers are the result of the market demand for eco-friendly packaging," said Baker.

Offering a truly "green" option to the cannabis industry that is competitively priced, Higher Standard Packaging is currently taking orders for R2 Containers in numerous sizes, suitable for packaging concentrates to an ounce of cannabis.

For more information, contact Barbara Diner or Deb Baker at Higher Standard Packaging at 720-583-6535, or visit the website, http://www.higherstandardpackaging.com/ . To learn more about Terrapin Care Station, email info@terrapincarestation.com.

LRM Adds TPF Production Lines, Expands to Second Building

TPF ThermoPlastic Flowforming

ROCKLEDGE, Fla., Sept. 10, 2013 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- LRM Industries International, Inc., headquartered in Rockledge, Florida, has secured a second building and added two presses due to rapid growth. Operating at 24/7 since May of 2011 and processing 2 million pounds of plastic per month, LRM reached full capacity on its main TPF ThermoPlastic Flowforming(R) production line.

Molding very large products, among them a challenging 420 pound structural panel with high demand, has driven this growth. LRM's TPF process technology enabled the development and production of this product.

Due to the global uniqueness of LRM's patented TPF ThermoPlastic Flowforming(R) process, the new presses are designed and custom built by LRM.

"Buying 'off-the-shelf' presses requires extensive re-engineering on our part," said Richard Cochrane, President & CEO of LRM, "This time, we decided to build our own and fully maximize the versatility and capabilities of TPF."

To make room for this new capacity, the STF Sheetless ThermoForming(TM) production line (LRM's other unique technology) will be moved to a second nearby building, increasing facility space by 70 percent. The STF line has been upgraded to enable the production of products as wide as 14 ft. and moving it to the new building will allow products longer than the current 25 ft. limitation due to space.

With this expansion, LRM has increased its employment by over 50 percent.

flexible packaging

CHICAGO, Ill., Sept. 6, 2013 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The U.S. is the largest national market for flexible packaging and the value it brings to brand owners through versatility and potential for innovation. Peel Plastic Products Ltd. is bringing this value to the brand owners attending two U.S. September trade shows - HH Backer Total Pet Expo and Pack Expo. Peel is exhibiting in booth 1733 at the Total Pet Expo and booth S6075 at Pack Expo.

"As one of the largest suppliers of pre-made plastic packaging in North America, these two established trade shows allow Peel to connect with professionals from both markets that can benefit greatest from our unique packaging formats," said Mark Liberman, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Peel Plastic Products.

The variety of audiences attending the Total Pet Expo and Pack Expo allows Peel to showcase how flexible packaging can be customized to enhance the product it contains. "For example, our side gusseted pouches offer more surfaces for communicating to the consumer," said Liberman. "And when you add one of our closure features to the package, consumers gain the convenience of keeping the product in the original packaging while reinforcing the brand."

The variety of Peel closure systems allows brand owners to customize their packaging. This convenient feature means that customers are not forced to use a secondary container to store products. "The companies attending the Total Pet Expo and Pack Expo know that convenience has become the most sought after feature in consumer packaging today. Convenience can drive a purchasing decision," said Liberman. "Peel's flexible packaging can offer that convenience."

About Peel:

Peel to Connect with Pet Industry Players at 2013 PIJAC Shows

National Pet Industry

BRAMPTON, Ontario, Canada, Aug. 23, 2013 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Canada is a growing nation of pet lovers. According to the Pet Food Association of Canada, there are more than 12.5 million pets nationwide. The 2013 Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada's (PIJAC Canada) tradeshows provide unique gatherings of the Canadian pet market and the leading companies that influence that industry, including Peel Plastic Products.

This year marks PIJAC Canada's 25th anniversary and Peel will be participating in the celebration by exhibiting at the ExpoZoo Trade Show and the National Pet Industry Trade Show. These PIJAC shows are ideal showcases for Peel.

"Our innovation in flexible packaging within the pet food industry allows for products to stand out and drive sales," said Mark Liberman, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Peel Plastic Products. "Government Market Indicator Report shows the Canadian pet food market growth continuing to a projected C$1.9 billion by 2016. Peel's Side Gusset pouches, printing on every panel, and specialized closures can help companies compete for this growth."

Functionality:

Just like in human food packaging, what may be one of the most important features of pet food packaging is convenience. Packaging that offers a beneficial feature can be interpreted as a product enhancement compared to the utilitarian aspects of basic packaging that is designed to protect and contain the product. Packaging options like Peel Plastic's Side Gusset pouches, and FlexiJug, offer the type of consumer conveniences that distinguishes a product.

The Side Gusset Handle and FlexiJug allow companies to offer consumer packaging that is easier to handle and control.

Liberman said: "The Side Gusset Handle is one of Peel's latest innovations. It can hold up to 45 lbs and can transform that slack bag of dog food into a manageable container ideal for dispensing. But for smaller packaging situations, the FlexiJug's re-enforced handle would be more beneficial. Features are only a benefit when they are appropriate for the application and appeal to the consumer."

A closure system allows consumers to keep the pet food fresh and accessible in its original, branded bag reducing the need for secondary storage containers and establish repeat exposure to the brand with each use.

Beyond the Shelf:

Attractive packaging is one of the most powerful tools in driving an initial retail sale, especially in a situation as pet food where the purchaser is not the consumer. Innovative packaging reinforces that sale at every touch point throughout the product life and encourages return customers.

About Peel:

Peel representatives are staffing ExpoZoo booth 114 at the Centre de foires in Sherbrooke, Quebec, August 25-26, 2013, and booth 522 at the National Pet Industry Trade Show at Mississauga, Ontario's International Center September 15-16, 2013.

Kubota Research’s P-Wave/PTIR(TM) IR Assisted Advanced Out Of Autoclave (OOA) Process

Structure grade epoxy adhesive

HOCKESSIN, Del., Aug. 27, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Kubota Research Associates, Inc. headquartered in Hockessin, Delaware, has developed a new P-Wave/PTIR(TM) IR Assisted Advanced Out Of Autoclave process to enhance adhesion properties as well as significantly accelerate the curing speed of thermoset resin systems for installing Adhesive Bonded Fasteners (ABF) such as CLICKBOND(R) studs and standoff onto composite fuselage and metal structures.

The TRL 7 process was demonstrated for the US NAVY Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) through a NAVAIR SBIR Phase II N08-030 program and jointly evaluated at Bell Helicopter and the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials (UDel-CCM).

OEM qualified room temperature cured structure grade two part epoxy adhesives such as Henkel Hysol(R) EA9394 and Magnobond(R) 6398 are used to install CLICKBOND(R) fasteners onto composite fuselages. These adhesives are extremely temperature sensitive for curing and typically set in 24 hours and cure in 5 to 7 days at 25 C/77 F. The P-Wave/PTIR(TM) process used with the same qualified adhesives can bond and cure the fasteners onto the substrate in less than 10 minutes. The process can be applied under a broad range of operating temperature conditions from -20 C (-4 F) to 50 C (122 F).

The process enhances wettability between the adhesive and substrates to significantly increase the fastener to substrate bonding strength. In addition, the P-Wave/PTIR(TM) ABF installation fixture is reusable and replaces the disposable one time use Pressure Application Fixture.

The P-Wave/PTIR(TM) IR Assisted Advanced Out Of Autoclave module and fastener bonding test results were exhibited at the 2012 NAVY Opportunity Forum. Kubota Research will participate the Matchmaking at The 2012 National SBIR Beyond Phase II Conference at Indianapolis, Indiana on September 10 - 13, 2012.

Kubota Research Associates is a member of the UDel-CCM University-Industry Consortium, a globally recognized center of excellence for research and knowledge in the advanced composites industry.

Mike Kubota, CEO of Kubota Research Associates said, "We are pleased to have established a working relationship with UDel-CCM. Our company along with our global partner Bell Helicopter looks forward to collaborating with UD-CCM to advance the development of P-Wave/PTIR technology to bring a new generation of cost-effective composite parts manufacturing methods to the industry."
