Publisher Helps Fight Crime With the Truth About Drugs

COMMERCE, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- City of Commerce and East Los Angeles businesses and entrepreneurs are concerned about crime. That's one reason that City of Commerce-based Bridge Publications Inc., publisher of the nonfiction works of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, shares the Truth About Drugs with the community. Truth About Drugs is a drug education and prevention campaign supported by the Church of Scientology.

Last Month, Los Angeles County authorized $15.6 million to combat the increase of "smash-and-grab" thefts targeting Los Angeles County. Trying to run a business can be challenging in the best of times, and insecurity takes its toll on entrepreneurs already struggling to recover from the economic effects of the pandemic.

There is a close relationship between drug use and crime. In fact, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime has found: "For every dollar spent on prevention, at least ten can be saved in future health, social and crime costs."

So, on a recent afternoon, Bridge volunteers brought sets of Truth About Drugs booklets to local businesses. The booklets explain in detail the harmful effects of drugs on the mind and body. The materials are provided by Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.

The shops and businesses they visited appreciated the outreach of the Bridge volunteers and their concern for the community. At a local pharmacy, an employee asked for more sets of booklets for her colleagues, who immediately started reading and discussing the material.

When the supervisor of a local nonprofit that provides career and business opportunities for youth learned that the volunteers offered free drug-prevention seminars, she asked them to arrange one the following week for the young adults they serve.

The manager of a fast-food restaurant said, "The work you are doing is very important. I see the bad effects of drugs on people in this neighborhood all the time. It is vital to raise awareness about the subject and promote drug prevention."

A paralegal who manages a legal office specializing in immigration was very receptive to the materials. Aware of the drug issues facing today's youth, she asked for more boxes of booklets to give to her own children.

Bridge staff distributed some 2,000 booklets and will follow up with delivering requested drug-prevention seminars. They intend to continue their efforts to improve the health and safety of the community by educating people on the truth about drugs.

Scientology Tools for Life Help Better the Chances for Youth to Succeed

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa /ScoopCloud/ -- Once faced with a bleak future, members of the graduating class of Makgongoana Secondary School in Mankweng, Limpopo, stand with the doors to higher education and opportunity now open. The school, once known as the institution with the lowest passing rate in the district, is now the best. And its graduates have the skills they need to achieve their dreams, thanks to a seminar organized by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers.

Dr. William Ramodike, Deputy Principal of Makgongoana Secondary School in Mankweng, Limpopo, and the school's principal Dr. Shapule Modjadji were awarded for transforming education standards for his students.

The change began in 2019, when Ramodike, pastor at the local Zion Christian Church and deputy principal of the school, was invited to a seminar at Castle Kyalami, Scientology headquarters for South Africa.

"I was introduced to a free life skills community development program called Tools for Life," says Ramodike. "It became clear to me that God had led me to the right place."

He and Dr. Modjadji immediately implemented the technology of study developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard and the results were dramatic. Once known as the school with the worst matriculation pass rate in the district, at an award ceremony in October 2023, officials recognized Modjadji and Ramodike for making Makgongoana Secondary School the top-performing school in the district for the third year in a row. As to what this means to the graduates-it changes everything.

"There is a lot more work to be done to reverse the current scene of education quality in our nation," says Ramodike, "and I am proud to be playing my part."

In addition to learning to handle study difficulties, he also gained tools to improve communication, resolve conflicts, set and achieve goals, and increase ethical standards among those he trains and works with.

"These Tools for Life really changed my life because they are applicable in any situation in society. They help me facilitate lessons, help my fellow pastors in church, handle my household affairs, and anything life can throw at me," he says. "We are more than just helping kids pass; we are also ensuring that they become valuable and contributing members of society who can make a positive change."

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard developed the Tools for Life for the training of Scientology Volunteer Ministers, a religious social service sponsored by the Church of Scientology International and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Mr. Hubbard described the Volunteer Minister as "a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others." Their creed: "A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well."

Their motto is no matter the circumstances, "Something can be done about it."

Castle Kyalami serves as a home for the community and a nexus for all who share the goal of bettering the lives of individuals and strengthening communities across the region, nation, and all of Africa. Mr. David Miscavige, ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, dedicated Castle Kyalami on New Year's Day 2019, reaffirming the vision of Mr. Hubbard that "from Southern Africa will spring the next great civilization on this planet."

The Scientology Network Shares Tools to Help Deal with Bullying

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 5 high school students reported being bullied on school property last year. Bullying can be traumatic to both victims and bystanders. Friends and families, aware of the problem, often feel powerless to help. But using human rights educational initiatives supported by the Church of Scientology, they can transform a culture of bullying and intimidation into one of mutual support and respect.

The urgency of taking effective action is highlighted by studies carried out by Yale University showing victims of bullying are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than nonvictims. Another study found that when bystanders to bullying intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57 percent of the time.

Parents, educators and community and religious leaders can cultivate a more humane and responsible environment by educating youth on their rights and responsibilities using the youth-friendly booklets and videos of United for Human Rights and its program for young people Youth for Human Rights. These materials are available free of charge to anyone wishing to use them.

The Scientology Network's original series Voices for Humanity documents the work of human rights advocates who use these programs to create meaningful change. A prime example is Rock for Human Rights (R4HR) lead singer Wil Seabrook.

When he launched his group's "30 Days-30 Rights" human rights school concert tour across America, Seabrook had no idea how pervasive bullying was or that what he was embarking on could save lives.

In a school auditorium filled with kids, he said, "Raise your hand if anybody's ever tried to bully you." Immediately, almost every hand in the audience shot up. "Everywhere I go and no matter the age of the audience, I've found that bullying is a universal problem," he says.

Seabrook's band performs music that promotes human rights and uses the Youth for Human Rights materials to introduce students to their rights and responsibilities.

In an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network, Seabrook speaks of how kids come up to the band after their concerts saying they're going to take more personal responsibility for creating a safe environment for their peers. Bridge Publications Helps Truckers Stay Safe

COMMERCE, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Volunteers from Bridge Publications Inc. are extending their drug education and prevention outreach to the city's truck drivers - the men and women who support the economy of the city with their work. Bridge is doing so with the Truth About Drugs, the drug education initiative supported by the Church of Scientology.

The City of Commerce, like its name, is a hub of international commerce. Trucks travel from across the country, as well as from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, to pick up and deliver goods to businesses and railyards in this vibrant area. It is not unusual to see fleets of semitrailers driving down the main streets.

Trucks move 73 percent of the nation's freight, and truckers pay $29 billion dollars a year in state and federal fuel taxes. Truckers are vital to the economy of the United States, but with that responsibility comes inherent stress: pressure to get to their destination on time, to keep moving, and to stay awake. In a society where drugs are promoted as the solution to these kinds of problems, truck drivers are at risk of putting their lives - and the lives of others - in danger.

A meta-analysis of previous studies on the subject showed 27.6 percent of truckers reported using drugs, with the most common drugs being cocaine and methamphetamine. In another meta-analysis, a statistically significant number of truckers had harmful patterns of alcohol consumption.

Bridge Publications Inc., publisher of bestselling author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard's nonfiction works, was alerted to this issue by a former trucker, Pedro, who now owns his own business in Commerce not far from Bridge's manufacturing plant.

Earlier this year, Bridge volunteers invited Pedro to join them in a neighborhood cleanup. He has continued to work with these volunteers in other community outreach projects. Pedro later confided to the volunteers his concerns that former colleagues' lives had been adversely affected by alcohol abuse. He asked if they would be willing help local truck drivers with their drug education and prevention initiative. The volunteers took Pedro's suggestion and reached out to local drivers at a popular truck stop on Washington Boulevard.

The drivers appreciated the Bridge volunteers sharing Truth About Drugs educational materials. The booklets contain the unvarnished truth about the most commonly used drugs and their harmful effects on the body and mind. They handed out more than a thousand booklets to truckers, who expressed their appreciation and took booklets on the road with them.

"This is a very important job that you're doing," said one of the drivers. Another asked for information on cocaine and was given "The Truth About Cocaine" booklet.

The manager of a neighboring body shop told the Bridge staff that he's seen truckers he believed were abusing drugs and alcohol. He took sets of the booklets to display and to pass out to his customers.

"Some of these guys drink alcohol and they become a liability," a front desk clerk of a tire shop said. "They are like an accident waiting to happen." She thanked Bridge for bringing her these materials and kept several booklets to give out.

Pedro thanked the Bridge volunteers who shared the positive feedback they received from their outreach. Pedro appreciated their following through on his suggestion and he kept booklets to hand out to his own customers.

Church of Scientology Honors World Day of Peace With Interfaith Gathering

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- As part of its purpose to bring the community together in the name of a better life for all, the Church of Scientology Los Angeles marked International Day of Peace with an open house and forum. In coordination with the L.A. chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, they invited members of many faith traditions for an evening of interfaith dialogue. The event highlighted the cultural and religious diversity and inclusiveness of Southern California and the importance of religions everywhere to work for peace in the world.

Representatives and clergy from the Ahmadiyya Muslim and Sikh communities, Zoroastrianism, the Falun Gong movement, and the Church of Scientology shared the basic principles of their religions with the audience and one another.

The goal was for those attending to gain greater understanding, respect and appreciation for the faiths represented. Despite many hailing from different nations and cultures, the program was a striking demonstration of how much we all hold in common no matter our differences. Feedback showed the presentations helped foster a better appreciation of religion as a whole.

"Los Angeles is known for its diversity. We have so much we can learn from one another, and we hold so much in common," said Susanna Johansson, Public Affairs Director for the Church of Scientology Western United States. "By increasing our understanding of other faiths, we wish to strengthen freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as expressed in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

In 1948, those crafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) recognized and stated in the preamble that "the inherent dignity and... the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world." They called on all member states to have the UDHR "disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

Yet, by the turn of the 21st century, a survey found only 4 percent of American youth were even aware of the existence of the UDHR much less the rights it encompassed.

In 2001, educator Mary Shuttleworth founded Youth for Human Rights International to educate youth on the UDHR and inspire them to become advocates for tolerance and peace.

In Los Angeles alone, Youth for Human Rights and its sister organization United for Human Rights have empowered hundreds of thousands of youth with an understanding of the UDHR with booklets and videos that bring these rights to life.

Thanks to the support of the Church of Scientology and Scientologists, Youth for Human Rights provides this secular program and its materials free of charge to anyone wishing to use them to educate others on this vital subject.

Inspired by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard who stressed that "human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream," Scientology Churches, Missions and groups worldwide promote human rights awareness through education about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Therapy or Torture? The Truth About Electroshock Airs on World Mental Health Day

In a single shock treatment, the psychiatrist sends up to 460 volts through the brain of the patient. Putting this into perspective, the human brain operates on 0.2 volts - eight times less than the 1.5 volts of a watch battery - so ECT inflicts the patient with 2,300 times the electricity the brain uses to function.

Call for Action Against Psychiatric Abuse on World Mental Health Day

Scientologists Celebrate 50 Years in Europe’s ‘Gateway to the World’

HAMBURG, Germany /ScoopCloud/ -- In 1970, a student from the University of Hamburg traveled to Canada, where she learned of the book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard. Heritage Day fosters unity and reminds everyone what it really means to be a South African, said Scientology spokesperson Sandile Hlayisi. "This is one of those days where you really appreciate being South African. The whole community gathered to share in each other's heritage."

The afternoon included a braai, traditional African markets, and a Heritage Day Sunday service emphasizing religious unity.

Scientology Volunteers Promote Responsibility and Care for the Environment Through Art

By survey, this is a high priority for local residents and businesses. And with the increase in crime and homelessness in the city, it is even more important today than when the initiative began. A partnership between the Church of Scientology, The Way to Happiness Foundation and the LAPD known as "Hollywood Village," the program has the purpose: to keep Hollywood beautiful, safe and clean.

L.A. Native was the theme of this month's activity. As usual, volunteers gathered at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center, collected cleaning supplies, and headed out for their monthly cleanup. After picking up and disposing of litter and trash, they tackled upgrading the appearance of six vandalized utility boxes. They painted the boxes with colorful images of native plants and animals, including the California poppy, bears, a hawk, and a unique spray-painted owl created by professional artist Michael Sanchez, who helps organize and coach the volunteers on their artwork.

The Church of Scientology sponsors the Hollywood Village initiative to care for the neighborhood known as the "show-business capital of the world." Visitors come from all over to see famous television and movie studios and record companies and the volunteers like to contribute to the community by helping keep it clean and aesthetic for neighbors and visitors alike.

After each cleanup, volunteers hand out copies of The Way to Happiness, the common-sense guide to better living written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard. It is a moral code anyone may use to chart a course for a happier life.

Homelessness is a major issue in Los Angeles as it is in so many other cities. And The Way to Happiness can help those down on their luck get their lives going in a better direction. "This is a new kind of moral code. I have seen this book create miracles," says the coordinator of the project whose favorite quote to share is:

"One can feel that things are such now that it is much too late to do anything, that one's past road is so messed up that there is no chance of drawing a future one that will be any different: there is always a point on the road when one can map a new one. And try to follow it. There is no person alive who cannot make a new beginning."

Faith Leaders Learn to Help Others with Scientology Tools for Life

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Volunteer Ministers Canadian Continental Cavalcade and the Church of Scientology of Cambridge, Ontario, hosted an interfaith forum with members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community. Those attending were introduced to the Volunteer Ministers program and the 19 Scientology Tools for Life.

The Scientology religion offers practical solutions to help improve conditions in life. In 1973, Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard directed this technology to be made available for the training of Volunteer Ministers to enable them to confront "the pain, evil and injustice of existence," and gain the ability "to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well."

Those attending the seminar logged on to the free online Scientology Tools for Life course on the Scientology website and enrolled on the Technology of Study Course. Volunteer Ministers were on hand to help them master the principles and gain skill in their application.

The ability to learn is, of course, the cornerstone of the Volunteer Ministers program as it makes it possible to learn and apply each of the other skills a Volunteer Minister must master, including how to improve communication, resolve conflicts and relationship problems, raise happy and ethical children, succeed in one's chosen profession or field, and better one's own or others' conditions and circumstances.

Each student was presented a certificate on completing the course.

"Life is evolving," said one participant, "so we need to evolve with it." He realized that the knowledge he gained from the seminar will help him do so.

Another found she already "knew" some of the information in the course, but didn't apply it before. This course helped her understand what she was running into when she had difficulties while studying and how she can overcome them now. This will help her use what she learns from now on.

Many were interested in taking part in additional Tools for Life seminars and inviting their friends and colleagues to join them.

In a lecture in 1950, Mr. Hubbard described the importance of education to the future of the culture, not to mention the bettering of conditions for the individual: "The end and goal of any society, as it addresses the problem of education, is to raise the ability, the initiative and the cultural level and with all these the survival level of that society."

The Church of Scientology Cambridge was dedicated in February 2013 by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige.

Every Church of Scientology is a central point from which the Church's many community and social betterment activities are coordinated. The Church and its members are committed to helping others and so provide assistance through a wide range of activities. In addition to the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program, these include anti-drug campaigns, human rights education initiatives, as well as social betterment programs utilizing L. Scientology Kansas City, a Compassionate Presence in the Heart of America

We wanted something special for Kansas City." They found a building in the very heart of the city's Crossroads District and decided it couldn't be a more perfect spot.

Dedicated in November 2019 by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige, the Church was awarded the Associated Building Contractors of America Building Excellence Award for its historic renovation, aesthetics and attention to detail.

Like any other city in America, Kansas City faces tremendous challenges. In 2020, drug overdose became the leading cause of death among adults age 18 to 44 in Missouri. And the city has been plagued by violent crime.

Graduates, wearing their signature bright yellow jackets, hail from many different backgrounds, faiths and beliefs. But all share the common purpose to help. Among them were educators at all echelons from primary school teachers to university professors, government officials, municipal leaders, community development specialists, early childhood practitioners, business leaders, pastors, social workers, nurses, police officers and agripreneurs.

South Africa faces many challenges, from unemployment and poverty to crime including gender-based violence. Many face inequality, suffer from unemployment, and try to cope with the effects of corruption.

But with the skills they have gained, these graduates look to a better future for themselves and their communities. They are empowered to resolve conflicts, tackle learning barriers, and raise the standard of business ethics. They can help people overcome drug abuse, improve their ability to communicate, gain more self-confidence, set and achieve goals, mend relationships, and plan for and achieve financial stability.

Among Tools for Life graduates empowering others through what they have learned are:

* Ms. Nomsa Ngwenya, a retired farmer, who held a series of empowerment workshops to inspire and equip farmers to turn struggling farms into profitable small holdings. "After I came across the Tools for Life program, I put it into application," she says. "And I am still experiencing success even long after turning the farm over to my daughter. I have retired and I now want to impart knowledge from my experience as my humanitarian mission to create better lives.

* Amanda Mbanga, a life coach who learned about Scientology Tools for Life while working with the Council of Churches on youth programs. She uses what she learned from these courses to help people one-on-one. These tools make it possible to find the exact right thing to help those she works with, she says.

* Irene Moemise, who was devastated when her job was phased out because of the pandemic. That's when she learned about the Scientology Tools for Life. Using what she learned on these courses, she opened her own bakery, which has not only brought her financial security, it has also enabled her to empower others in need of employment and supply bread to shelters for battered women and children. And when someone comes asking for day-old bread at a reduced cost, she hands them a loaf right out of the oven with a smile.

Scientology Churches Share Solutions on Overdose Awareness Day to Turn the Tide

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- More than 109,000 Americans died of drug overdose in the 12-month period ending January 2023. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reports fentanyl-related fatalities among children and teens increased more than 30-fold between 2013 and 2021. And, although the opioid epidemic has created the most severe impact in the U.S. and Canada, there is hardly a country on Earth not suffering from the harmful effect of drugs. But there are simple actions anyone can take to help save lives, according to Foundation for a Drug-Free World, the drug education and prevention campaign the Church of Scientology supports.

While the numbers are bleak, the effect of drug overdose on the families and friends of the victims can never be expressed by a statistic.

"When there's death involved, that's forever," says Lance Dyer whose son Dakota took his life after one hit of a synthetic cannabinoid. "The pain, the hurt, the anguish to your parents, your friends, your loved ones - the ramifications of your choices go way past you getting high," he says in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the new season of the Scientology Network.

Like thousands of individuals and groups internationally, Dyer adopted the Truth About Drugs campaign of Foundation for a Drug-Free World because when he visits schools to talk to kids about drugs using these materials, the fact-based information in the booklets and videos creates impact and helps them reevaluate their ideas and make the firm decision not to take drugs.

To bring community leaders together to tackle this urgent issue, Scientology Churches are marking International Overdose Awareness Day this weekend with conferences, drug education training, and drug prevention and awareness initiatives. And they are screening episodes of Voices for Humanity to show how effective these materials are and how easy it is to reach kids with the truth.

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, "Prevention strategies based on scientific evidence working with families, schools, and communities can ensure that children and youth, especially the most marginalized and poor, grow and stay healthy and safe into adulthood and old age. For every dollar spent on prevention, at least ten can be saved in future health, social and crime costs."

Budget cuts and post-pandemic recession have made it even harder to fund drug education and prevention than before. But thanks to the support of Scientology Churches and Scientologists, Drug-Free World makes these materials available free of charge to anyone wishing to use them to educate themselves, their families, friends and communities about drugs.

When Julieta Santagostina learned about Drug-Free World she helped organize a protest that ended up getting local drug houses shut down. "But there was a reason that drugs were around. There was demand for drugs," she says. And there is demand because people, especially children, are not well informed. "People take advantage of these kids," she says in her episode of Voices for Humanity that shows how Santagostina soon became president of Drug-Free World Florida, which is changing the entire dynamic on this issue across her state.

In his episode of Voices for Humanity, Drug-Free World Italy Executive Director Oreste Depaoli recalls how older boys introduced him to using drugs when he was 12. He soon became an addict and at 19, he nearly died of an overdose. "More and more people are dying of drug overdose in Italy every year," says Depaoli who points out that where there are drugs, there are guns, crime and death. "If people knew what drugs really lead to, they could choose not to take them," he says.

Learn how Stein found out about the state's repressive Baker Act when her mother was committed in a spurious use of the procedure after experiencing an adverse reaction to a medication. "That was a wake-up call," she says. Because of her familiarity with CCHR, Stein was able to navigate the system and get her mother released. But she realized that if this could happen to her family, it must be devastating to others who don't have any idea how to deal with such a violation of their family's rights.

In 2016, of the 19 million residents of Florida, nearly 200,000 were committed against their will through the Baker Act. Some 32,000 of these were children, who could be committed based on this law without their parents' knowledge or permission.

"Using social media and other means of communication, we were able to raise awareness on these issues and spur Florida families to contact members of the Florida Legislature," says Stein. They filed numerous complaints, exposed abuse through news stories and social media, partnered with other organizations, and ran information campaigns, creating a grassroots movement that put pressure on Florida lawmakers to make the issue a priority. As a result, the number of people committed under the Baker Act in Florida dropped for three straight years.

Continuing their pressure, in 2021 they helped see to the passing of new legislation including a Parents' Bill of Rights. "The success of this campaign showcased that a small group of well-intentioned parents can effect meaningful change," says Stein.

"CCHR gave me the insights I needed and the courage I needed to demand that they release my son," says a woman whose child was wrongly committed through the Baker Act. "I had someone on my side. I had someone to support me in uncharted waters."

Citizens Commission on Human Rights was cofounded in 1969 by professor of psychiatry Dr. Thomas Szasz and the Church of Scientology. Volunteers Honored at the Los Angeles Church of Scientology Annual Awards Banquet

Among those represented at this year's ceremony were volunteers of nonprofits that partner with the Church of Scientology in its many outreach and community betterment programs, including Tlaxcaltecas USA, the Central American and Guatemalan Migrant Network, Fundacion Un Pedacito de Cielo, MIRO Women's Support Group, New Challenge Ministries, El Salvador Foundation, Unidos Por Una Misma Causa, Conceptos Productos Naturales, and the Helping Hands Society of Los Angeles.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles partners with these nonprofits to provide weekly food drives to L.A. families experiencing food insecurity and to hold cultural festivals and outreach activities that address pressing social issues affecting Los Angeles families.

In an episode of Inside Scientology on the Scientology Network, one volunteer says "I feel like our purpose as Scientologists is to better the lives of people around us." "The whole point of these social betterment campaigns and groups is to create a better Los Angeles," says another.

Easily recognized by their bright yellow shirts and their can-do spirit, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who were recognized at the World Humanitarian Day ceremony were on call this week. Meteorologists predicted "life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flooding" for Los Angeles. Fortunately, the storm passed over the region with minimal damage, but with September and October the most vulnerable months for wildfires, local Volunteer Ministers remain ready to respond at a moment's notice.

The work of the Volunteer Ministers is described in the Inside Scientology episode by a member of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. "The firefighters came back and quickly recognized that the best place to get the type of support needed was the folks wearing the yellow shirts," he says. And it wasn't just the supplies that they appreciated. It was their "generosity and kindness."

But these Los Angeles-based Volunteer Ministers don't simply serve the greater Los Angeles area. "They go anywhere in the world, whether it is far or near," according to a Church executive interviewed in the episode. "They go and help people put their lives back together." "Making a difference in the world is what it's all about," says another staff member.

Originally founded in 1954, the newly configured headquarters of the Church of Scientology Los Angeles was dedicated by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige in 2010 as an Ideal Scientology Church, serving Scientologists in their ascent to spiritual freedom and as a home for the entire community - a meeting ground of cooperative effort to uplift people of all denominations.

Help is "the woof and warp of association," wrote Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. "A man is alive so long as he can help things and so long as he, himself, can be helped." In creating the Volunteer Ministers movement in 1973, he provided tools to empower anyone to "help their fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring truth and spiritual values to the lives of others." He described the Volunteer Minister as a being who "does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well."

Learn How a Simple Act of Kindness Inspired a Movement on Meet a Scientologist

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- "I never realized until I had my first son just how much you can love another person and just how far you're willing to go for them," says Scientologist Cristal Logothetis. In an episode of Meet a Scientologist on the Scientology Network, Logothetis describes how she came across the image of a three-year-old boy who drowned off the coast of Greece at the height of the Syrian refugee crisis. She was then riveted by news reports of thousands of families arriving in Greece. Parents carried their babies and toddlers in their arms as they trekked across Europe in search of a safe place to raise their families.

Logothetis set up a crowdfunding website to collect 100 baby carriers for these families. The response was overwhelming. Within days, she had not merely surpassed her goal, she'd rented and filled several storage lockers with more than 900 carriers.

Meet a Scientologist travels with Logothetis to Greece. She was joined by another woman who simply learned about the project online and volunteered to go with her. They distribute these carriers, showing moms and dads how to use them, often having to resort to sign language.

Her simple act of kindness has grown into an international movement. Today, her nonprofit, Carry the Future, has more than 50 volunteer staff and some 6,000 global volunteers. It provides aid to refugees, especially moms and babies, in countries including Greece, Jordan, Cyprus, Yemen, Bangladesh, and at the U.S./Mexico border.

"One of the amazing things about Carry the Future is that it attracted people from the first day from all walks of life. And it all starts with one person helping one other person," says Logothetis. "For us, it was simply a humanitarian mission to make sure that the most vulnerable people on the planet have an opportunity to get help."

Carry the Future changed the narrative, because it showed people that they too could get involved. "At the core of our message is 'You can make a difference; you can do something about it,'" says Logothetis, "which also happens to be very much at the core of Scientology."

Lives Bettered Thanks to the Help of the Scientology Tools for Life

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Shadrack Mpho Lekoana, a minister of the Uniting Reform Church in South Africa, was in search of a way to bring help to those in need. His congregants found strength when they came to him for help but went home with the same problems. "As ministers, we are called to change the lives of the people, and we need to have the tools," Rev. Lekoana says in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network.

In South Africa, the church is a trusted place where people go for answers to the problems they face in life. But in a country where 55 percent of the population lives in poverty, where unemployment and crime are rampant, church leaders had no real answers to offer their parishioners.

Rev. Lekoana became a minister because of his passion to help people. But he was discouraged. That all changed when he was invited to Castle Kyalami, headquarters of the Church of Scientology for South Africa.

"They introduced me to the Scientology Handbook and its 19 courses with the tools to handle the challenges and the problems that we have in our communities," Rev. Lekoana says in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network. He began using this knowledge with parishioners when they came to him and he was finally able to assist them in creating the positive change he had always wanted to help them accomplish.

Knowing he was not alone in this problem, Rev. Lekoana visited ministers of many different churches and invited them to Castle Kyalami for Empowerment Seminars. Religious leaders of many different denominations came together and isolated common problems of their congregants such as drug abuse, illiteracy, and marital problems. They were then introduced to the Scientology tools and studied the 19 courses to help them resolve these situations.

Word spread of the success of the seminars and they grew and grew until more than 3,500 religious leaders of a wide range of faiths were empowered to help their parishioners with the Scientology Tools for Life.

How a Bike-Loving Italian Anti-Drug Activist is Helping Italy Live Drug-Free

BERGAMO, Italy /ScoopCloud/ -- Motorbikes roared through the city of Bergamo this June and leaned into the curves around Lake Iseo on one of Italy's most breathtaking and challenging highways. Depaoli recalls his childhood, hanging out with older boys who introduced him to using drugs when he was 12. An addict by 19, he overdosed and nearly died. And he realized that if he continued on this path, it would kill him. That was in 1992.

He quit cold turkey and has never looked back. But many of his friends died of overdose or drug-related accidents and he wanted to do something effective to handle the blatant false propaganda that leads so many youth down the same dangerous path as the one he took. So when he learned about Foundation for a Drug-Free World, he immediately came on board.

"More and more people are dying of drug overdose in Italy every year," says Depaoli. "Where there are drugs, there are guns, crime and death. ... People are not well informed about what drugs are and what they do. And there are active campaigns in our society that make it look like drugs do no harm. ... If people knew what drugs really lead to, they could choose not to take them."

The Truth About Drugs campaign of Foundation for a Drug-Free World provides that information. Drug-Free World Foundation is an international nonprofit organization that partners with some 1,200 organizations, and government and law enforcement agencies worldwide to educate the public on the danger of drugs.

Using the resources from Foundation for a Drug-Free World, volunteers in countries across the globe are reaching their communities with this vital information. Foundation for a Drug-Free World also provides drug education eCourses free of charge through the Drug-Free World website.

Hungarian Scientologists Help Make Summer Special for Families in Need

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- "Everyone is special" was the message at a celebration of "Everybody's Day" this summer in Újpalota, Hungary. Volunteer Ministers from the Church of Scientology Budapest joined the Baptist Charity Service, the Red Cross, and an Újpalota family support association to make this a memorable day for children in the underserved community on the northeastern border of Budapest.

There was face painting, glitter and henna tattoos, trampolines and bouncy castles. And to add to the fun, the Volunteer Ministers brought all the fixings to prepare and serve their recipe of spaghetti Bolognese.

Active throughout the year, the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology Budapest are featured in an episode of Destination: Scientology on the Scientology Network. During the pandemic, many people lost their livelihoods, and they needed help, says one of the executives of the Church of Scientology Budapest interviewed in the episode. She describes how Volunteer Ministers collected everything from food and clothing to toys for the children. And they provided these donations to those in need.

The president of a local ethnic community council describes how the pandemic increased the vulnerability of many families. "We were surprised by the Volunteer Ministers, for their attitude and their assessment of the scene and fast reaction," he says. "Without our asking, they helped our community with full devotion."

The founder of the Tunderpakk Foundation is also interviewed, and she describes the help of the Volunteer Ministers as "constant." "With the Church of Scientology and the volunteers, they always stand with us," she says, making it possible for the charity to serve the community, especially the children and the elderly.

David Pomeranz Discusses the Modern Science of Mental Health at Los Angeles Concert
