Is Ireland Failing to Help Those at Risk of Drug Abuse?

DUBLIN, Ireland /ScoopCloud/ -- National Affairs Office of the Church of Scientology in Dublin hosted an open discussion. A new community-based initiative emerged in view of the need for prevention among at-risk groups and communities.

According to the latest statistics from the Health Research Board, two people in Ireland die every day of drug-related causes, most of them of overdose. With 10,000 people treated for drug use in the last year alone and one of the highest rates of drug-related deaths in Europe, Ireland passed crisis point a long time ago.

So where do we go from here?

This was the topic of a recent open discussion held to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The meeting was attended by volunteers, parents, community leaders and former addicts who gathered at the National Affairs Office of the Church of Scientology in Dublin.

Speakers highlighted that the bulk of the work done currently by agencies and community groups - whether harm reduction projects, support services or legislative changes - aim to come to grips with the constantly worsening scene by assisting active drug users and those who are addicted. But inadequate attention is given to prevention among the much larger at-risk groups.

As one participant put it, "Children are not born with the idea that they should take drugs, be it for fun or to overcome adversity. They get this idea at home, at school, in their community. One of the problems is that there is nobody to help them understand factually the effects of drugs, despite the real-life experiences so many of us have had. Drug education which leads to understanding, informed decisions and freedom of choice might not prevent everyone from taking drugs, but it certainly can save lives among at-risk groups."

Another shared his harrowing personal story of drug abuse, addiction and crime, which robbed him of 15 years of his life. "I am lucky to be alive today. I am eager to use my experience to help others in my community not to make the same mistakes I've made."

Another added, "To reach the young generation we need to reach the parents and the entire community."

Guests learned of the educational materials of the Truth About Drugs campaign. Initiated and supported internationally by the Church of Scientology, the campaign is in widespread use in most countries in the world today. It offers a complete multimedia kit, which aims to dispel misconceptions and empower youth and adults alike with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about drugs.

All participants agreed that prevention through high-impact drug education is urgently needed for at-risk groups and in the community at large.

Those attending discussed forming a community-based Drugs Forum to oversee the execution of grassroots, independent projects along these lines. Such a forum is now planned to begin in September 2023.

The National Affairs Office of Dublin was dedicated in October 2016 by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige, who also officiated at the opening of the Church of Scientology and Community Centre of Dublin the following year. The Church of Scientology Celebrates its Anniversary in One of California’s Premier Communities

PASADENA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- In the heart of Old Town, just ten miles from downtown Los Angeles, the Church of Scientology Pasadena combines a love of the region's history with its commitment to ensuring a bright future for all.

Pasadena is an eclectic mix of old and new-with the California Institute of Technology and NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, world-class museums, trendy shops and eateries, and a climate that inspires the annual New Year's Day Tournament of Roses.

An episode of Destination: Scientology on the Scientology Network shows how the Church restored its new home, dedicated in July 2010 by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige. The registered historic landmark, known as the Braley Building, was an iconic bicycle emporium. It was built in 1906, two years before Henry Ford introduced America to his Model-T, and not long after The New York Times described the bicycle as "a splendid extension of personal power and freedom, scarcely inferior to what wings would give." The Church, with its meticulous care to preserve all elements of the building's distinctive architecture, earned the city's Historic Preservation Award.

In dedicating the Church, Mr. Miscavige reminded Pasadena Church staff and parishioners, "You are now part of a movement like nothing in our history. And it is gaining momentum by the day. ... There is indeed a lot of help we must now bring to bear. That is the pledge we make today, to the city of Pasadena."

Taking this to heart, the Church works in close coordination with officials, community groups and religious leaders to address vital social issues.

Take a tour of the Church, meet some of its staff and parishioners, and see what makes them a valued partner in the Pasadena of today and tomorrow.

Watch Destination: Scientology - Pasadena on the Scientology Network.

Each episode of Destination: Scientology brings the viewer inside a new Church of Scientology, showcasing the diversity of our Churches and the cooperation that weaves every Church of Scientology into the local community fabric.

The Scientology Network debuted on March 12, 2018. Since launching, it has been viewed in more than 240 countries and territories in 17 languages. A Passion for Speed Makes Christopher Hill a Winner on Meet a Scientologist

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- "Racing and driving cars at their limit - it's my passion," says Christopher Hill in an episode of the new season of Meet a Scientologist on the Scientology Network. "It's the thing that I love more than anything in the world," he says, "the faster the better, the more challenging the better."

But it's not just about speed. "It's about being the best at something that you can be," Hill says. "It's about perfecting what you're doing. It's about searching for something that's pretty much unattainable."

From the time he was 2 or 3 years old, Hill knew that he wanted to race cars. He pursued this, beginning with kart racing as a teen. But he was nearly sidelined for life, breaking his back in an accident when his kart malfunctioned.

Christopher credits the application of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard with helping him recover physically much more quickly than his doctors predicted. But possibly even more important, Dianetics helped him heal any mental scars that might have affected his love of the sport and his ability to pursue it.

Because of his exceptional driving skills, Hill was selected to be an instructor at the BMW Performance Driving School near Palm Springs, California. His goal as an instructor is to make every driver he works with as good a driver as they can possibly be and to keep the passion for driving alive.

But the car clinic he runs is not only for racers. In fact, Hill had his girlfriend take the course to give her some basic skills. Not long after that, while driving, she was hit by a drunk driver. And one of the skills she learned in the clinic saved her life.

Helping Keep Youth Safe from the Menace of Human Trafficking

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- When Glory Matipile discovered a childhood friend had suddenly disappeared, it changed her life forever. An episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network documents how this human rights advocate is saving lives.

Glory Matipile saw a Facebook message that set her life on a completely different course. A childhood friend had suddenly disappeared. This led Matipile to discovering a human trafficking ring that was preying on young men, women and children. Her story is featured in an episode of Voices for Humanity that premiered on the Scientology Network in July.

South Africa's depressed job market and high youth unemployment was the perfect formula for a criminal network that promised visas and jobs in distant countries. These victims were then used as decoys by drug traffickers, were sold into sexual slavery, or became victims of organ harvesting.

Gathering information that she was able to access as a human resource officer, Matipile alerted the police who located and saved her friend. Matipile created her nonprofit, Baagi Ba South Africa - The Future of South Africa - to help potential victims avoid similar scams and raise awareness throughout the country.

She realized that what assists human traffickers in their crime is that people do not know their human rights. She partners with Youth for Human Rights, an initiative supported by the Church of Scientology, to raise awareness of human rights and protect youth from becoming victims.

Learn how Matipile and Baagi Ba South Africa have created an entire network to protect young people from being trafficked into slavery. Watch her episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network.

Join the Church of Scientology in Celebrating the Vibrant Culture of Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Mexico /ScoopCloud/ -- On the anniversary of the July 2010 dedication of their Church, Mexico City Scientologists share what they love most about their megacity and their passion for helping their community.

"We are very proud of being Mexicans," says Gustavo, an executive of the Church of Scientology in the historic center of Mexico City. An episode of Destination: Scientology on the Scientology Network describes the city's energy and spirit as unlike that of any other in the world. One of the largest metropolitan areas on Earth and among the oldest cities in the Americas, Mexico City is a unique melding of indigenous culture, colonial influence and cosmopolitan flair.

"Having a Church of Scientology in Mexico City, you are actually making a difference in people's lives," says Gustavo. "Knowing that you are doing something that is creating a life-changing experience for people - that's the most rewarding thing as a member of the Church."

Less than two miles from the Church, one of the city's most beloved landmarks - the Angel of Independence - is a symbol of the importance of freedom to the people of Mexico. And helping people free themselves from their problems and the factors that hold them back in life through study of the spiritual technology developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard and the practice of the religion - that is what inspires these Scientologists in their work.

"We help people to be in better communication with their family members, with their friends," says Aida, a staff member interviewed on this episode. Mariela agrees. What she likes best about working at the Church is that she can "help people solve their problems, achieve their goals and be happier. And everyone deserves that."

Mentoring Youth Leaders in the Name of Peace and a Better World

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- Human Rights Office of the Church of Scientology International congratulates Youth for Human Rights International for its Summit at the UN, which provided youth activists from around the world with tools to achieve their humanitarian goals.

Nobel Peace Laureates and human rights luminaries shared their wisdom and skill with young delegates from across the globe at the 17th Youth Summit, July 7-9. Organized by Youth for Human Rights International, the Summit was hosted by the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the United Nations and cosponsored by the Permanent Missions of Ireland, Albania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The theme of this year's Summit was "IMAGINE: EQUALITY. DIGNITY. UNITY - Youth Making it a Reality."

Delegates gathered in the UN's Economic and Social Council Chamber, where international human rights icons mentored and encouraged them to persist in achieving their goal - to make human rights a reality by raising awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) through education.

Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Laureate for 1996, welcomed the delegates in a recorded presentation. "The hope that is represented by UDHR never dies," he said. "It is always carried forward by the young ... With your actions today you are making the world you will live in a better place. The UDHR maps the road to a better world. Thank you for continuing to carry that torch and build a road to the ideals we share."

This year, the world celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the document that, for the first time, laid out the 30 fundamental rights of each member of the human family. Yet all these years later, the world faces humanitarian crises including famine, human trafficking, and environmental degradation, and more than 30 countries are embroiled in conflict from full-scale wars to terrorist insurgency. It is clear that these rights have not yet become a reality for billions on the planet.

In the preamble to the UDHR, those who crafted the document urged governments and civil society to "strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance."

In December 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training. It calls on member states to "implement human rights education and training." Yet 12 years later, little has changed.

Youth delegates from around the world collaborated in creating a declaration which they read to the Summit. They demand that all UN member states make human rights education mandatory in their nation's schools.

In evidence that this can be done, those attending the Summit were briefed by Mr. Jorge Luis Fonseca Fonseca, Deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica (ret.) and Youth for Human Rights Costa Rica Executive Director Braulio Vargas, on how they helped push through legislation mandating human rights education in all Costa Rica schools, thus instilling human rights into the nation's fabric.

Other prominent presenters at the Summit included the Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the UN, Ambassador Karlito Nunes; Permanent Representative of Albania to the UN, Ambassador Ferit Hoxha; Immediate Past President of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Dr. Ira Helfand, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for 1985 and 2017; Co-Founder and President of Eyes Open International, Harold D'Souza; Chief Operating Officer of Movement Forward, Inc. Jared Feuer; retired Associate Justice of the Philippine Court of Appeals and Chairperson of the Independent Commission Against Private Armies, Monina Arevalo Zenarosa; and Assistant Professor, Northwest Vista College, Haetham Abdul-Razaq, Ph.D.

More than 400 officials, ambassadors and representatives of UN permanent missions, representatives of NGOs, academics, and members of civil society attended the two-day conference, at the end of which, dignitaries signed a proclamation mandating human rights education.

The event was broadcast on the UN website and viewed by human rights activists, educators and members of Youth for Human Rights chapters in countries across the globe.

The final day of the Summit was hosted by the Church of Scientology Harlem Community Center. Delegates attended a seminar in which they gained skill in planning and executing their human rights education initiatives. Each crafted a human rights action plan to help them reach their goals for the coming year.

The Human Rights Office of the Church of Scientology International congratulates Youth for Human Rights International for the scope and impact of this summit. The Church has sponsored and helped organize each of the previous 16 Youth Summits. Human rights advocacy is an integral part of the Scientology religion. The Creed of the Church of Scientology, written in 1954 by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, begins: "We of the Church believe: That all men of whatever race, color or creed were created with equal rights." The Church of Scientology and its parishioners support Youth for Human Rights International, making it possible to provide its materials free of charge to educators, human rights organizations, and community and civic leaders wishing to educate others on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

For more information on Youth for Human Rights International and its work to ensure full implementation of the UDHR, watch "Shining a Light on Human Rights," an episode of Voices for Humanity, an original series on the Scientology Network, available on DIRECTV Channel 320, DIRECTV STREAM, AT&T U-verse and streaming at Scientology.tv, on mobile apps and via the Roku, Amazon Fire and Apple TV platforms.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE - the weekly series providing a platform for independent filmmakers to air films on important social, cultural and environmental issues - presents Fathers of Football, illustrating the important role high school football plays in small-town America.

Following the Wagoner Bulldogs in their attempt to win back-to-back Oklahoma state championships, the dramas on the field unfold against the personal dramas experienced by the players and their families.

Directed by Bradley Beesley, the feature-length documentary weaves together stories of hope, heartbreak, grit and glory as the players of Oklahoma's number one ranked high school football team, led by their coach, Dale Condict, prepare to defend their state championship title while pondering the unknown future awaiting them after leaving high school behind. Central to its theme of "Football being more than just a game" is the focus on Condict's son who battles cancer while dreaming of getting back on the field.

ABOUT BRADLEY BEESLEY

Bradley Beesley is an Austin-based independent film and video director, producer and cinematographer. With a passion for capturing the seldom seen side of Americana, he directed the documentary Okie Noodling that explored the practice of handfishing, he delved deep into the Southern roots of the blues with the legendary R.L. Burnside in Hill Stomp Hollar, went behind the walls of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary for Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, and captured the drama on the sidelines of high school football with the award-winning documentary Fathers of Football.

Bradley brings this unique perspective to his current freelance role at the Magnolia Network, working with Chip and Joanna Gaines in producing TV and branded content.

In an interview with Scientology Network for DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE, Bradley shared insights to his hopes for the film:

"My hope is that this film could resonate with people that don't even care about high school football and that anyone could see how the power of the human spirit could trump darkness."

‘Voices for Humanity’ Battles Human Trafficking with Glory Matipile

GAUTENG, South Africa /ScoopCloud/ -- VOICES FOR HUMANITY - the weekly series presenting heroic change-makers from a variety of faiths, cultures and nations, working to uplift their communities - announces a new episode featuring human rights activist Glory Matipile, premiering on July 5, 2023.

VOICES FOR HUMANITY airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Scientology Network.

With a depressed job market and high rate of unemployment, many South Africans are easily lured with potential jobs that turn out to be human trafficking traps. Of those ensnared, only one percent are ever rescued. Children and young South Africans are trafficked for sex slavery, drug trafficking and organ harvesting. Glory Matipile has made it her mission to rescue victims of human trafficking and to spread the knowledge of human rights. Her work in coordination with Youth for Human Rights focuses on educating the youth of South Africa about the tricks and tactics of traffickers, helping prevent them from ever becoming victims.

ABOUT GLORY MATIPILE

A native of South Africa, Glory Matipile's determination to become an activist in the battle against human trafficking was sparked by the disappearance of a girl she knew growing up. Setting out to find her friend, Glory uncovered the numerous scams and deceits traffickers employed and the dangers they posed to the country's youth. Glory decided to start the organization Baagi Ba South Africa (The Future of South Africa) to advocate for victims. With her team of activists, she exposed a trafficking ring, saving hundreds of potential victims from being consigned to slavery. Glory and her organization have a widespread presence in communities, in schools, and have brought the message of human rights to millions through South African media.

Glory Matipile is the founder and CEO of Baagi Ba South Africa.

Meet a Scientologist Gets Tempted by Love and Chocolate With Master Pastry Artists Armando Siracusano and Gabriella Comis

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's MEET A SCIENTOLOGIST - the weekly series spotlighting the everyday lives of Scientologists from around the world and all walks of life - announces an episode featuring elite chocolatiers Armando Siracusano and Gabriella Comis on July 4, 2023.

MEET A SCIENTOLOGIST airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Scientology Network.

Armando and Gabriella take the art of chocolate to the next level in their chocolate and gelato shops in Sicily. The couple shares their journey, from falling in love at a bakery to the inspirations for some of their most extraordinary desserts.

ABOUT ARMANDO SIRACUSANO AND GABRIELLA COMIS

Armando Siracusano was born in Catania, Italy. Inspired by his grandmother's fresh-baked bread, he became a baker by the age of 15. One day, Gabriella Comis walked into the bakery where Armando worked, and it was love at first sight. But it wasn't happily ever after quite yet. With her father dead set against their relationship, the young couple ran away together. Soon after, Armando used his dough to buy his first bakery - later uncovering the business's unsavory past connection to the mafia. After a series of continuing adventures, Armando eventually established himself as a bona fide baker. Then one fateful day he tasted pure chocolate and fell in love with the confection. From that moment forward, he focused on becoming a chocolatier and gelato maker, studying with the best in the world. Through pastry skills and business acumen, their shop, Cioccolato e Gelato, became an instant success and is renowned as one of the best artisan confectionary shops in all of Sicily.

High School Musical Dreams Hit a High Note in the Documentary Showcase Feature ‘Most Valuable Players’

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE - the weekly series providing a platform for independent filmmakers to air films on important social, cultural and environmental issues - presents the documentary classic "Most Valuable Players," on June 23, 2023.

Most Valuable Players shines the spotlight on talented kids in Pennsylvania's high school musical theater programs as they prepare for the Freddy Awards, the annual awards show honoring outstanding high school musical theater talent and programs.

Directed by Matthew D. Kallis, the feature documentary shifts the focus from the ultra-competitive and well-funded athletic programs in sports-obsessed Pennsylvania to the no less deserving, but sorely underfunded, musical theater programs in the state. The multitalented students from three schools show their creativity and camaraderie as they prepare for the night of their young lives in hopes of appearing onstage at the prestigious Freddy Awards show.

Most Valuable Players is the winner of many awards including the Documentary Channel Audience Award at the Nashville Film Festival and Best Director at the Children's Film Festival Seattle.

ABOUT MATTHEW D. KALLIS

Director Matthew D. Kallis is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker whose previous projects include the PBS television series The Living Century and The Inside Pitch, for which he received an L.A. Area Emmy Award nomination. Most Valuable Players is his first feature-length documentary.

Matthew earned a Bachelor of Science from MIT and an MBA from Columbia University. He studied filmmaking and visual arts with eminent artists and scientists including Richard Leacock (pioneer of Direct Cinema), "Doc" Harold Edgerton (inventor of Electronic Strobe Photography) and Nicholas Negroponte (founder of the MIT Media Lab). Matthew spent many years on Wall Street and continues to serve as a board member and advisor for charitable foundations and new media businesses.

In an interview with Scientology Network for DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE, Matthew conveyed some of his hopes for the film:

"The idea that this film can get as broad an exposure as possible, that's what's most important to me at this point. And to promote the value of arts to the young people of the world is really what I'm looking for."

ABOUT CHRISTOPHER LOCKHART

Producer Christopher Lockhart is a Hollywood filmmaker and educator. Born and raised in New York City, Christopher received an MFA in dramatic writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Christopher was nominated for an L.A. Area Emmy Award for The Inside Pitch, a program that examines how writers pitch their screenplays in Hollywood. He has lectured around the world and has taught locally at Los Angeles Valley College, UCLA and National University. Having produced a string of successful independent films, Most Valuable Players is Christopher's first documentary feature.

Christopher stated in an interview with DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE:

"I just think people watch the movie and they feel happy. The joy that these students are experiencing through the arts is infectious . . . and what's wrong with a little joy, what's wrong with a little bit of happiness? This is a tough world and we're living in tough times. And so for 90 minutes you can sit back and you can have a dose of happiness along with some show tunes."

ABOUT DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE

Fundamental to Scientology is a humanitarian mission that extends to some 200 nations and territories with programs for human rights, human decency, literacy, morality, drug prevention and disaster relief. For this reason, the Scientology Network provides a platform for independent filmmakers who embrace a vision of building a better world.

Meet a Scientologist Goes Big on Art with Angelika Mehrens

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's MEET A SCIENTOLOGIST - the weekly series spotlighting the everyday lives of Scientologists from around the world and all walks of life - announces an episode featuring master large-scale painter Angelika Mehrens, premiering June 27, 2023.

Angelika Mehrens left her highflying career of fashion modeling behind to pursue her passion for painting. Venturing beyond the confines of a typical canvas, she successfully established herself as a large-scale painter, creating massive murals for residential and commercial clients, and artworks for film and TV.

ABOUT ANGELIKA MEHRENS

Angelika Mehrens's passion for painting began at the age of five. Born in Bamberg, South-Central Germany, her venture across the dividing line into communist East Germany as a child would have a significant impact on the course of her life. Struck by the bleak dreariness of the cityscape she observed there, Angelika's aim in life became to infuse color and aesthetics into people's lives. While still in her teens she moved further west to America, where she began a modeling career and suddenly found herself walking the runway in world fashion capitals: Milan, Paris and New York. Despite the glamor of her jet-setting life and posing for designers like Versace, Chanel and Helmut Lang, she never gave up her dream to paint. After eight years, she hung up her couture for a painter's smock and a palette. Through hard work, ambition and talent, her career quickly took off. Now, with private and major commercial clients showcasing her work on their properties from coast to coast and a long list of film and television productions featuring her art, Angelika has established herself as one of the most compelling large-scale painters working today.

The Scientology Network debuted on March 12, 2018. Since launching, the Scientology Network has been viewed in over 240 countries and territories in 17 languages. Florida is a point of entry for illegal drug traffickers moving their products from Mexico, the Caribbean and South America. With such widespread access, drug use in Florida has soared. After graduating from university, she became a primary school teacher and was immediately alarmed at the number of parents and students seeking her advice on dealing with emotional distress and physical abuse. She then discovered The Way to Happiness and found the book's 21 precepts aligned perfectly with traditional Chinese values. She began addressing Taiwan's social ills by educating Taiwan's youth on moral values. To date, Miao-Hsiang has distributed over 52,000 The Way to Happiness booklets in schools and cultural organizations and reached millions more through Taiwanese media.

Miao-Hsiang Lin is the Way to Happiness Ambassador for Taiwan.

‘Forgive – Don’t Forget,’ a Journey to Return a Samurai Sword, Airs on Documentary Showcase

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE - the weekly series providing a platform for independent filmmakers to air films on important social, cultural and environmental issues - presents the award-winning documentary "Forgive - Don't Forget" premiering on June 9, 2023.

Forgive - Don't Forget chronicles the journey by an American to return a Japanese samurai sword surrendered at the end of World War II to the family of its original owner in an attempt to better understand the past and build a bridge between cultures.

Codirected by Brad Bennett, Forgive - Don't Forget is, at its core, about the connection between two very different cultures and the importance of remembrance. The Japanese sword is a symbol deeply embedded in Japan's history and spiritual heritage. When an American who inherited a surrendered sword from World War II decides to try and track down the family of the original owner in hopes of returning it, he encounters many seemingly insurmountable barriers. His quest ultimately leads to a better understanding of both American and Japanese cultures and helps bridge the gap between the two.

ABOUT BRAD BENNETT

Brad is a Japanese American filmmaker and Emmy-nominated producer based in Virginia. His first feature documentary, Forgive - Don't Forget, won the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2017 Guam International Film Festival. Bennett has been featured in The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and by the International Documentary Association. His work has been supported by PBS, Southern Documentary Fund, Virginia Film Office and the UCLA Documentary Film Legal Clinic.

In an interview with Scientology Media Productions for Documentary Showcase, Brad reflected on his work:

"Stories of positivity are very important nowadays ... through our film I just want to be able to share hope and the message of forgiveness and how powerful that is for all of us."

ABOUT PAUL D. UFEMA

During Paul's senior year in college, he was activated into the U.S. Army and sent to Cuba. It was there he was introduced to video journalism. After returning to the U.S., he worked in television production. He founded All New Bricks, a successful YouTube channel that specializes in Lego builds, which aides St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Paul shared insight on the underlying cultural significance of the film:

"I was returning a sword to a family and that's all it was. But it was so much bigger than that ... we would be bridging the gap between two cultures and I think that's why people are drawn to it."

ABOUT DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE

Fundamental to Scientology is a humanitarian mission that extends to some 200 nations with programs for human rights, human decency, literacy, morality, drug prevention and disaster relief. For this reason, the Scientology Network provides a platform for independent filmmakers who embrace a vision of building a better world.

Searching for Common Ground in Lobster War: The Fight Over the World’s Richest Fishing Grounds on Documentary Showcase

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE - the weekly series providing a platform for independent filmmakers to air films on important social, cultural and environmental issues - presents the documentary "Lobster War: The Fight Over the World's Richest Fishing Grounds."

DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Scientology Network.

Lobster War: The Fight Over the World's Richest Fishing Grounds follows the tense standoff between lobstermen in the U.S. and Canada and the attempts to begin a constructive dialogue over the rights to one of the world's richest fishing grounds. As sea temperatures rise, lobster populations have begun to migrate north, blurring the lines of maritime boundaries and impacting the livelihoods of fishermen and entire communities on both sides.

Directed by David Abel and Andy Laub, Lobster War: The Fight Over the World's Richest Fishing Grounds is a stunningly photographed and award-winning feature documentary about a climate-fueled conflict between the U.S. and Canada over the fishing rights in waters that both countries have claimed since the end of the Revolutionary War. The disputed area in the Gulf of Maine, known as the Gray Zone, has warmed faster than nearly any other body of water on the planet. As a result, the previously modest lobster population has surged, as have the profits in bringing them to market, setting the stage for a dangerous showdown.

Lobster War: The Fight Over the World's Richest Fishing Grounds is the recipient of numerous film festival awards, including winner at the International Maritime Film Festival and the Mystic Film Festival.

ABOUT DAVID ABEL

David Abel is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter at The Boston Globe who has covered wars, terrorism and the environment. Abel's work also won an Edward R. Murrow Award, the Ernie Pyle Award from the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Feature Reporting. He is a director/producer whose films have been broadcast to national and international audiences on BBC World News, Discovery Life, PBS and Pivot.

In an interview with Scientology Network for DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE, David spoke about the central theme of his film and the urgency required to mitigate the effects of climate change:

"Over the past decade I've written a lot and now made several films trying to capture how our warming oceans are affecting people's lives. And this film, Lobster War, is very much about how the warming waters are affecting people's livelihoods."

ABOUT ANDY LAUB

Andy Laub is a writer/director/producer/composer who works on nature films and cultural documentaries. His work has appeared on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, BBC World News and Ora.TV. His film As It Happens: Pacific Crest Trail has been viewed online by more than 500,000 people around the world.

Voices for Humanity Fights Psychiatric Abuse in Hungary With János Dobos and Klára Hídvégi

BUDAPEST, Hungary /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's VOICES FOR HUMANITY - the weekly series presenting heroic change makers from a variety of faiths, cultures and nations working to uplift their communities - announces a new episode featuring the work of activists fighting psychiatric abuse János Dobos and Klára Hídvégi, premiering June 7, 2023.

Every year, ten to fifteen thousand Hungarians, including children, are involuntarily committed into psychiatric institutions where many experience horrific forms of torture - from being locked into caged beds to being forced to undergo electroshock therapy. János Dobos and Klára Hídvégi are successfully fighting the corruption of the psychiatric industry in Hungary, and their work is bringing hope and justice to the nation.

About János Dobos:

As a child growing up in his native Budapest, Hungary, János Dobos witnessed bullying and injustice, leading him to forge a lifelong commitment to standing up and fighting for the rights of others. As an adult, János became aware of the massive numbers of psychiatric abuse victims in his country. He decided to join forces with Citizens Commission on Human Rights to raise awareness of the problem, offer legal assistance to psychiatry's victims and fight the industry in the courts and legislature. His work has directly resulted in criminal convictions of psychiatrists and the closure of the country's oldest psychiatric institution.

János Dobos is the president of Citizens Commission on Human Rights for Hungary.

About Klára Hídvégi:

Klára Hídvégi saw the traumatic effects of the psychiatric industry's practices firsthand when she witnessed her mother repeatedly try to commit suicide after being prescribed psychiatric drugs. This fueled Klára's mission to combat psychiatric abuse and led her to join Citizens Commission on Human Rights. Together, Klára and János have built a powerful movement in Hungary to expose and eradicate the horrific abuses of the psychiatric industry preying upon defenseless victims.

Klára Hídvégi currently serves as the production director of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights for Hungary.

Meet a Scientologist: Steven Margo Evokes the Magic of the ‘Lucky’ Chimney Sweep on the Scientology Network

SAN DIEGO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's MEET A SCIENTOLOGIST - the weekly series spotlighting the everyday lives of Scientologists from around the world and all walks of life - announces an episode featuring master chimney sweep Steven Margo.

Steven Margo is a master chimney sweep working on the rooftops of San Diego, California. As is tradition in his home country, Great Britain, Margo and his crew don top hats and tails as they work to prevent houses from the threat of going up in flames.

ABOUT STEVEN MARGO

Steven Margo was only 6 years old when his family moved from the United Kingdom to the United States, but he never outgrew the appeal of British culture.

Embracing all things quintessentially British, Steven started a band that covered Beatles and Rolling Stones songs in the 1960s, bonded with the James Bond series, and finally tried his hand as a fabled chimney sweep. It was the latter that brought him lasting success as Steven, joined by his family, built his company in San Diego, California.

His crew look like they've just stepped off the set of Mary Poppins, evoking all the magic of the "lucky" chimney sweeps.

With over 25,000 houses going up in flames in the U.S. every year due to chimney fires, his mission is to educate people on the dangers of unmaintained chimneys to save homes and lives. To date, Steven Margo and his company have cleaned and maintained over 40,000 chimneys.

Anti-Drug Activist Roars Across Italy on Voices for Humanity

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's VOICES FOR HUMANITY - the weekly series presenting heroic change makers from a variety of faiths, cultures and nations, working to uplift their communities - announces a new episode featuring the work of Italian anti-drug activist Oreste Depaoli on May 31, 2023.

Behind the staggering numbers of overdose deaths and drug-related violent crimes in Italy is a lack of drug education. Oreste Depaoli unites community members and elected officials, revving up a nationwide motorcycle tour up and down the Italian boot to bring lifesaving drug education throughout the country.

ABOUT ORESTE DEPAOLI

Growing up in a farmhouse in Bergamo, Italy, Oreste Depaoli moved to the city at 11 years of age. By 12, he was introduced to marijuana. During his teenage years he became addicted to harder drugs, leading to an overdose at 19. Realizing he had narrowly escaped death, Oreste quit drugs immediately. He wanted to prevent others from going down the same path, so he became involved with the Drug-Free World campaign, educating people on the dangers of drugs. In the beginning, Oreste was threatened by drug dealers. But despite the danger, he united members of the community to spread the anti-drug message and successfully shut down their drug operation. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, he combined his passion for riding with his drug education calling, creating "Let's Ride for a Drug-Free Italy." The popular annual event attracts over 100 bikers for a 1,500-mile ride around Italy to distribute Drug-Free World educational materials at every stop.

Oreste Depaoli is currently the Executive Director of Drug-Free World Italy.

Voices For Humanity Brings Life-Changing Solutions to South Africa With Reverend Shadrack Lekoana

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's VOICES FOR HUMANITY--the weekly series presenting heroic change-makers from a variety of faiths, cultures and nations, working to uplift their communities--announces a new episode featuring Reverend Shadrack Lekoana on May 24, 2023.

In South Africa, the church is a trusted place, a place people go for answers to the problems they face in life. But in a country where 55 percent of the population lives in poverty, where unemployment and crime are rampant, church leaders had no real answers to offer their parishioners. Finding practical solutions in The Scientology Handbook, Reverend Shadrack Lekoana is at the forefront of a movement uplifting the lives of millions across South Africa.

ABOUT REVEREND SHADRACK LEKOANA

Known by his friends as "Pastor" before he was even a teen, Reverend Shadrack Lekoana followed in his father's footsteps, leading a life of service in the church. Despite growing up impoverished, he was the first in his family to go to college, where he earned his theology degree. Years of face-to-face counseling with parishioners led to the realization that he lacked practical solutions to truly help them with their problems. But that changed once he was introduced to The Scientology Handbook. Recognizing the value of the tools contained within the handbook in addressing many of society's ills, he partnered with the Church of Scientology to share the technology with leaders and pastors from all denominations in what have come to be known as "Empowerment Seminars." To date, more than 3,200 members of the clergy have attended, providing them with the practical solutions to turn their churches into "beacons of hope" in the creation of a better world.

Reverend Shadrack Lekoana is a minister of the Uniting Reformed Church in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

Meet a Scientologist Carries the Future with Cristal Logothetis

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's MEET A SCIENTOLOGIST--the weekly series spotlighting the everyday lives of Scientologists from around the world and all walks of life--announces an episode featuring humanitarian Cristal Logothetis on May 23, 2023.

Cristal Logothetis started the nonprofit organization Carry the Future to send baby carriers to Syrian refugees after seeing news reports of the harrowing journeys that families fleeing with babies faced. What started as her simple act of kindness has grown into a movement of thousands joining in to help save the lives of children.

ABOUT CRISTAL LOGOTHETIS

Born in Madrid, Spain, Cristal Logothetis moved to the United States at only eight years old and remained keenly aware of the hardships she endured emigrating and trying to assimilate into a foreign culture.

One day while scrolling through her newsfeed, she saw the image of a three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned off the coast of a Greek island as his family was fleeing the violence in their homeland. The experience left an indelible impression upon her and ignited a sense of "radical compassion." Wanting to assist the refugee families in any way she could, she decided to collect 100 baby carriers through a crowdfunding website. Within days, she hadn't merely surpassed her goal, she filled storage lockers with over 900 carriers--which she then personally helped distribute to refugee families.

Today, Cristal's nonprofit, Carry the Future, counts over 50 volunteer staff members with 6,000 global volunteers and has distributed more than 30,000 carriers in refugee crisis zones around the world.

Former Army Ranger Leads The Battle Against Synthetic Drugs On Voices For Humanity

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Network's VOICES FOR HUMANITY--the weekly series presenting heroic change-makers from a variety of faiths, cultures and nations working to uplift their communities--announces a new episode featuring anti-drug crusader Lance Dyer on May 17, 2023.

When synthetic drugs first appeared on convenience store shelves in the late 2000s, the U.S. government was slow to realize the dangerous effects of these so-called "legal highs." But with over 42,000 cases of toxic poisoning in just five years, synthetics quickly grew into a national health crisis. Today, Lance Dyer is educating the nation about synthetics, facing the crisis head-on -- and winning.

ABOUT LANCE DYER

Lance Dyer, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, joined the U.S. Army in 1982 and went on to become a member of its elite Ranger unit. In 2012, his 14-year-old son, Dakota, took synthetic "marijuana" for the first and only time, and as a reaction to the toxin took his own life. His death inspired Lance to spearhead an effort to hold the manufacturers of the drug accountable. The evidence he gathered and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration was used to help arrest and convict 13 people who were directly involved in his son's death. Lance partnered with the Foundation for a Drug-Free World to continue the work of educating kids, parents and community leaders and helping local, state and federal legislators become aware of the dangers of synthetics and pass effective legislation to ban them.

Lance Dyer is the founder and director of the Dakota Dyer Foundation, a nonprofit founded to help educate youth and communities on the truth about synthetic drugs.
