Kiosk Industry July 2023 Updates – ADA, PMS, and Biometrics

WESTMINSTER, Colo. /ScoopCloud/ -- Public service announcement from Kiosk Manufacturer Association: KMA checked with the U.S. Access Board and got updates on the EV Charging and POS Self-Service NPRMs. We are looking at September 2023 for the EV release and then December 2023 for the POS/KIosks release. We sent in comments for both. Architectural ABA standards will come into play. It was also great to see Korean Kiosk Accessibility Council formed in June.

Our features: the Hotel PMS summary article covering 20 or so hospitality vendor companies. We gave Bard a try at assisting and we included that information. Seemed like nice follow-up to HITEC in Toronto. Nice interview with Frank Olea covering biometrics. Big focus on IRIS ID and nice of Iris ID to republish. The Kiosk Definition 2023 was updated. This is from Tech View on LinkedIn. Did you know Mehmet built a kiosk in Constantinople? Some might postulate that Vlad the Impaler invented visual analog signage.

The pictures from Lowes are telling (no more NCR). Bit of history is NCR bought Optimal Robotics out of upstate NY years ago, and their units have been replaced by units by another company based in upstate NY. What are the odds? Aand we were a bit stunned by the Dunkin Donuts menu boards using printed stickers (see In The Wild post). Maybe they went cheap?

Kiosk Industry Self Service News for February 2023

DENVER, Colo. /ScoopCloud/ -- It's President's Day. And the Kiosk Manufacturer Association news centers around dispensing machines/kiosks and in particular legal cannabis and naloxone. Terrapin just deployed some extraordinary robotics for "bagging" and delivering marijuana here in Colorado. See the intro video in the post. Facial recognition, 1100 products, big touchscreen and the users get to watch thru a glass panel. We have a nice video demonstrating that.

In the naloxone news: last year (and year before) there were zero dollars budgeted by state, local and federal agencies for kiosks that dispense naloxone and also fentanyl detection strips. So far in 2023? Almost $500M.

The ADA retail restaurants is a recap of the recent U.S. Access Board webinar which was terrific. We've included the graphics illustrating all of the architectural considerations that can be overlooked (except by trolling attorneys looking for a fast buck).

Regulations for EV charging stations are coming to a head. We participate on several ANSI workgroups and their official EV regulations go out for public review by end of March. The U.S. Access Board is releasing their ANPRM by end of summer.

I tested out Panera's new 'automated' drive-thru and now I think every fast food chain should use it -- An Alexa-type conversational order-taking AI for the drive-thru with lots of pics, but oddly no audio. Will multi-lingual capability be added? We've asked.

This coming week is a busy tradeshow week with DSE in Vegas (we are in 617, use KMN20 for a free pass. See cloud services for 3 different SOC systems, self-order countertops, an outdoor digital sidewalk marquee, and a dual 55 outdoor menu board. Canada's CSA Group is working on new guidelines, says the Kiosk Association (KMA). Point-of-Sale is likely to center on physical access by customers and audio? Kiosk Association June 2022: ADA for Self-Service and EV Charging Stations

DENVER, Colo. /ScoopCloud/ -- Self-Service Kiosks Digital Signage EV Charging News: This month we've launched a new clearinghouse for EV Charging Stations (https://ev-charging.stations.org). EV charging infrastructure now has significant funding from the NEVI Infrastructure Act.

Funds will be released before the end of 2022. Existing ADA regulations such as ADA 2010 and Section 508 apply. We have a complete writeup on kma.global. We predict that both the U.S. Access Board and ANSI will weigh in on EV-related before the end of 2022.

As part of our EV kickoff we have also put together an EV charging market snapshot reflecting current SLED and FED opportunities for EV charging infrastructure (which have "soared" as the media likes phrasing). Currently $2B in just these markets for active RFPs.

Our ADA Committee is evolving to keep pace with the anticipated regulatory actions in this self-service space. As co-chairman, Nicky Shaw of Storm Interface and Michael O'Hare of TechForAll Consulting have four initiatives they are in process of executing.

1 - Expand our sounding board to officially include organizations such as the NFB, AFB, Canadian groups and the RNIB

2 - Formalize and automate our existing educational communications to procurement entities in the SLED space

3 - Expand the working groups to include new self-service segments such as Smart Cities, robotics and EV Charging

4 - Formalize our industry input from current sponsors such as Panasonic, LG and Intel.

Kiosk Association (KMA) Releases Articles of Organization for ADA

DENVER, Colo. /ScoopCloud/ -- February Self-Service News: KMA is pleased to announce our Articles of Organization. The document is now available on the kma.global website. "This is another step towards strengthening the association and providing an even more effective accessibility and ADA direction for the Association," said Craig Keefner, manager.

On Feb 16, 2022 we had our quarterly call with over 50 participants. Topics included the upcoming rulemaking session scheduled to begin in April, industry-wide certification options and POS terminals. The newly appointed eight members of the U.S. Access Board will be introduced at the March 9th meeting.

This month we published the leading article by attorney Lainey Feingold, Kiosk Accessibility - It's The Law -- Lainey is an expert at structured negotiation. We added Marsha Mazz & David Capozzi as new honorary members of the Hall of Fame. And finally, the Senate has formed a commission to modernize HIPAA.

And new technology like Smart City deployments and EV Charging Stations (new ones at Walgreens) are using blanket statement "units are ADA-compliant". It would help if those items were documented. There are also data privacy issues and the revenue potential for selling personal data.

Tech Highlight This Month

Lidar -- the new Grabango C-Store deployment continues the trend for ultimate contactless. 340 convenience stores and we can assume it's lidar-based. Nourish-Bloom in Georgia is using the same lidar technology as well. It's the new "just walk in -- just walk out" shopping model.

Big legal ADA news is Quest Diagnostics got very bad news on two fronts. The class action part will drive remedial actions across the entire country, and all units. That originally inexpensive kiosk has the definite possibility now of turning out to be an expensive choice.

For the upcoming DSE show in Vegas/March, besides hoping COVID will subside, we are hoping to show a cool 4K 85-inch demo deployed recently at super major retailer (they sell staples?). At NRA our odds are pretty good we will have the Samsung "KMA" kiosk in our booth (running Nanonation partner software). We are in the Tech Pavilion.

NRF in New York January -- We will be showcasing accessibility in multiple form factors and in the POS space. As part of the show, the KMA and Datacap Systems have nominated PopID in the Best Payment Innovation award category. As of September 2021, PopID announced that more than 100 restaurants and retail brands now accept PopPay throughout Southern California with around 70,000 registered users and more than four million facial authentications.

On September 7, 2021, PopID announced they plan to go national. Recently, Wendy's in Japan announced a rollout of facial payment technology by PopID. It takes less than 30 seconds to vote. To conclude we have started a rolling post on Vaccination passport kiosks. Both for the US and International (EUDCC). Federal jurisdictions like air travel are first (CLEAR has already implemented). Google released API covering segments such as Kaiser, Zoom, Office365 and many more. Units are beginning to emerge from China and priced at less than $1000 though not yet listed on Alibaba. Both guests and employees are affected with imminent FDA approval and local laws (Key to NYC Pass -- they are the new rules for NYC). McDonalds has mandated for all employees.
