Pick Your Long-Term Care Agent Carefully, Advises ACSIA Partners

KIRKLAND, Wash., May 9, 2016 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The best way to buy long-term care insurance is through an independent agent, according to many experts. But agents vary. How do you pick a professional who is right for you? "We recommend asking six key questions," says Denise Gott, CEO of ACSIA Partners, one of America's largest long-term care insurance agencies.

The questions are:

1. Do you offer any solutions other than long-term care insurance? Today LTC insurance isn't the only way to cover long-term care expenses. Popular alternatives include critical illness insurance, annuities, and life insurance with LTC riders. "Unless you're absolutely sure LTC insurance is what you need," says Gott, "your best bet may be dealing with someone who offers other choices as well. For example, what if it turns out you don't qualify for LTC insurance?"

2. Where are you licensed? LTC agents must be certified by every state in which they conduct business. "Be sure you pick someone who's licensed and covers your area," Gott says. "Also, probe the scope of the agent's practice. Many of the more experienced agents are certified in two, three, or more states. Multiple state certifications may be a sign of a person's experience, but some single-state agents build very large clienteles close to home and may be equally experienced."

3. What insurance carriers do you represent? "If the agent mentions just one carrier, beware," says Gott. "Your best bet is someone who represents several companies offering a range of policy options. The idea is to compare alternative plans and find the one with the features you want at a cost you can afford."

4. Do you receive higher commissions on some LTC policies than on others? "The best answer is no," says Gott. "Some agencies, including ours, have a procedure for equalizing commission income. This ensures that agents get the same commission rate no matter what policy you buy. There's no temptation for them to push a high-profit item."

5. Can you advise me on tax breaks and other financial ramifications of long-term care insurance? "A qualified answer is best here," says Gott. "Experienced agents know about the relevant regulations, but don't pretend to be experts in tax law or estate planning. Instead, they defer to (and often work with) financial advisors, accountants, estate planners, and attorneys."

6. How can I learn more about you? "The aim of this question is to uncover the agent's reputation," says Gott. "Can they name professionals who recommend them? Have they been written up online or in the newspaper? Are they scheduled to speak at an upcoming event? Can they be found on the Internet? Can they give you references?"

California Chiropractor calls new use for common diabetes drug ‘NUTS!’

California Physician honored for Commitment to Global Health

Dr. Wakam had to travel by bush four wheel drive taxi, and foot to get to Baligham. The children she treated were suffering from respiratory infections, intestinal parasites, diarrhea or malaria, all of which are preventable diseases. In addition, maternal health services and a safe place to give birth are not available to pregnant women in this remote poor village. The low percentage of pregnant women giving birth in the poorly equipped government run Baligham health post, do so under unsanitary conditions and have to pay for their own drugs and supplies.

Dr. Wakam secured donations of needed medication and medical supplies from Johnson & Johnson Company for the health fair and used her own funds to help pay for more medication and travel expenses. "Over the last couple of decades, Medicine and Big Pharma have been upping the ante on pain pills," explains Dr. Harte. "Government agencies had the brakes on opioids for a long time. Then came the 'cox 2 inhibitors,' Vioxx and Celebrex. Vioxx was taken off the market in 2004, after killing more people than we lost in Vietnam. Now the brakes are off the opioids, including Opana and Oxycontin."

"Over the last couple of decades," Dr. Harte goes on, "orthopedists have gotten into extremely aggressive marketing with spinal surgery. The top operation now, in this country, is spinal fusion." He goes on, "With the possible exception of unstable fractures and cancerous bone tumors, back surgery, especially spinal fusion, is barbaric. Patients end up worse, often far worse. Often, one surgery leads to the next. This is a major gateway to long-term opioid prescriptions, and then, addiction. They, the surgeons, are the cause of these drastic pain increases, and, therefore, they are the cause of the current widespread drug dependence." He emphasizes, "People in pain go to orthopedists for relief. Their patients end up worse, with untold damage to the nervous systems."

Dr. Harte explains. "Millions suffer from chronic neck and back pain, as well as pain of the hips, knees, shoulders and wrists. They go to the orthopedist for help. At best, nothing is accomplished, since, in Medicine, no one deals with causation. Only symptoms are dealt with."

County Awards Contract to CARR for Development of Assisted Living Facility Rating System

Demonstrating the Board of Supervisor's commitment to providing a trusted information source about senior care for residents of San Diego County, the contract terms allow additional funding for up to 3 follow-on years.

This award results from a competitive procurement authorized by the County Board of Supervisors in December 2014. This contract is the first step in the initiative launched by Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Greg Cox in spring of 2014 to create a rating system for local assisted living facilities.

The rating system relies on voluntary participation by facilities. The UTSanDiego's extensive expose of problems related to state oversight of assisted living facilities was the impetus for the Board's initiative.

The Zambian partnership formed in 2011 to provide support to a country with limited access to this compassionate form of medical care. Four Seasons partners with PCAZ because their missions align, according to Janet Bull, M.D., chief medical officer, who helped formulate the partnership.
