Thousands Expected to March on DeSantis This Weekend for Reproductive Rights

"I think that the consistent insults that come from Tallahassee have worn down the patience of the people of Florida," Laura Lippo, one of the organizers said of the March, "and they are ready to show Ron that attacking our bodily autonomy is the last straw."

"Our main message is that he, and his fellow lawmakers, need to make a declaration, with actions to match, that they will support the people of this state under no uncertain terms by declining all legislation that prevents the right to choose." Laura concluded.

DeSantis has continued to uncharacteristically remain relatively quiet on the subject, only saying that he would, "work to expand pro-life protections." Most political scholars feel this is to avoid the election year controversy that largely favors the opposing view.

The peaceful protest on Saturday is pressuring the governor to make his stand.

"The constitution of Florida states, 'Every natural person has the right to be let alone and free from governmental intrusion into the person's private life'," Emmie Reed, another organizer of the March said, "what we are asking of Ron DeSantis is to enforce our Constitutional rights."

Bans Off Our Bodies Florida is a campaign led by abortion rights supporters. It is a movement for reproductive rights and healthcare with rallies across the state which are intended to send a message loud and clear: All people deserve access to abortions when they need it and in the communities they live in.

Marching on DeSantis for Abortion Rights: Large March Planned Ahead of Florida Supreme Court Decision on 15 Week Ban

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Pro-choice protestors are taking to the capitol on August 27, 2022, ahead of the anticipated Florida Supreme Court Ruling on the 15-week abortion ban. Bans Off Our Bodies Florida, is planning to show DeSantis, and the Supreme Court Justices, that upholding this new law is an assault on equality, health, privacy and the constitution of Florida.

"The Florida Constitution clearly states, 'Every natural person has the right to be let alone and free from governmental intrusion into the person's private life.' I don't know how it could be any clearer that this means for the government to stay out of my reproductive rights," says Laura Lippo, one of the organizers of the event. "Although the U.S. Supreme Court assertively wrong in their interpretation of our rights under the 14th Amendment in the U.S Constitution, there is no ambivalence with Florida's."

So far, Florida courts have respected and upheld the privacy of Floridians from governmental intrusion; however, with a court that is stacked in DeSantis's favor, it is possible that could change.

"Just because you are able to assign people to a court with your belief system, doesn't make that belief system legal," Laura said. "DeSantis has created an assault on Floridians rights that will end in the ballot box."

The event will start with speakers followed by a peaceful march.

"DeSantis is waging this war against us," Nicole Richards, co-organizer of the event said. "On August 27th we are showing up with our presence and voice as our weapons. We will not be ignored."

Opposition to Los Angeles’ Burbank Blvd Street Widening Project – Burbank Widening Citizens Group

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Burbank Widening Citizens Group. ("BWC Group") announced today that it is organizing in opposition to the Burbank Blvd. Street Widening Project. The call for public comment on this project occurred in 2009, as was the Project Impact filing. With the passing of twelve years since the Project CEQ Impact filing and public comment, it is mandatory that a Project Impact Re-evaluation and a re-opening of a period of public comment. The neighborhood description in the 2009 Impact statement looks nothing like the 2021 neighborhood."

The BWC Group also notes that "the Planning Department has targeted many businesses as scofflaws who have "built in the city right-of-way" despite City permits on the improvements. There has been a lack of transparency and a failure of communication between the neighborhood and Planning Commission." The BWC Group continues, "the bottom line is nobody wants this highway, and the neighborhood feels it's unnecessary. The neighborhood wants a road that fits the neighborhood, not the other way around."

Mayor Joe Hogsett Joins Indiana Contractors and Lawmakers to Stand Up to Tax Fraud at The Indiana Statehouse

Investigation Launched into ‘Sustainability’ of Controversial Logging Plans

PETROLIA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Petrolia-based Lost Coast League (LCL) today announced that the growing controversy over Humboldt Redwood Co.'s (HRC's) plans to log virgin forests at Rainbow Ridge stepped up a notch when auditors for the highly regarded Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) announced they will be reviewing the "sustainable" certification associated with two of the company's key logging plans.

The announcement came late last week in response to a grievance letter filed July 31 by the Lost Coast League (LCL) and signed by some 100 concerned citizens, businesses, organizations and elected officials.

The letter follows decades of protests, intense local debate, and social media acrimony surrounding the potential destruction of some of California's last unprotected and unentered forest stands, located about 25 miles south of Eureka in the headwaters of the Mattole River.

LCL asserts that FSC's coveted "green" label applies only to lumber harvested from HRC's second-growth (cutover) forest stands-meaning that forest products derived from old, primary forests are ineligible for "sustainable" certification. HRC charges more for FSC-labeled "sustainably" sourced lumber in response to demand by eco-conscious consumers.

Robert J. Hrubes, lead investigator with SCS Global Services, FSC's auditing firm, responded to the letter by proposing a method to "ascertain conformity" to FSC standards. This method will involve a field review of the controversial logging plans on Sept. 11.
"May we assume that HRC will preserve the status quo for the operations in question until the investigation is completed?" asked LCL's Ellen Taylor in an email to Hrubes.
"That is a question that you should direct to HRC," Hrubes replied, adding that HRC "is free to take whatever actions they wish to take.
"While I cannot speak for HRC, I expect it is very highly unlikely that any site-disturbing forest management activities will take place in the 'Rainbow Ridge' area prior to the mid-September audit."

"In other words," said Taylor, "there is no guarantee whatsoever that HRC will not log the old trees while the investigation is taking place, thereby voiding the process of investigation."

Any suspension of the controversial logging plans while the SCS investigation takes place would come as welcome news to citizens groups opposed to the destruction of these unique ancient forests situated on steep unstable slopes, and the species that depend upon them.

In recent weeks HRC has escalated tensions by deploying a paramilitary-style security corporation, Lear Asset Management, that has threatened nonviolent protesters with tasers and attack dogs, sought to deprive protesters of sleep by playing loud music and shining bright lights at them at night, and tugging at the "lifelines" that keep them suspended in precarious tree-top perches near the ridge.

"Consumers embrace certified wood because they want to keep the old, original forests standing and preserve their public trust values of water, wildlife and fish," LCL's Michael Evenson said. "They believe certified wood comes from carefully managed second- and third-growth stands without the use of poisons.

"Should HRC cut this forest down before the inquiry is completed HRC will have abandoned any claim to sustainability and be destroying the evidence of a primeval intact ecosystem flourishing on their lands."

Legal advocates claim HB 5456 - seeks to delay if not deny compensation from the responsible corporations to victims. "Since we already have transparency by law in Michigan this transparency titled proposal is designed with one goal in mind - to run out the clock on asbestos victims in Michigan so they die before their cases even make it to court," said Attorney Lane Clack of Saginaw.

"People who were unknowingly sickened by asbestos deserve justice, and the companies responsible for poisoning them should be held accountable."

In Lansing today, Clack said that legislation - Asbestos Claim Transparency HB 5456 - passed by the Republican controlled Michigan House of Representatives last week would penalize Michigan residents who are sick and dying from asbestos exposure, many of whom are veterans, and would be an unwarranted giveaway to big companies that made products with asbestos.

"An estimated 10,000 - 15,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related diseases and people are still getting sick. Dozens of countries have banned asbestos, but it is not banned in the United States," said Clack. "As companies continue to import hundreds of tons of asbestos into the U.S. each year, workers, first responders and others continue to be exposed, especially when buildings are renovated or demolished. HB 5456 puts onerous burdens on victims and asbestos trusts, but does nothing to protect innocent Michigan workers from exposure to asbestos. And don't forget, this is a veterans' issue. Forty percent of all Michigan asbestos victims are veterans. That's why many of the major veterans groups oppose this bill."

Asbestos was once widely used in a number of industries that employed many people in Michigan, including construction, steel, pulp and paper production and the auto industry. Michigan has a higher-than-average mortality rate for asbestos-related diseases, according to AsbestosNation.org.

Michigan Veterans are disproportionally afflicted with asbestos-related diseases. While they make up 8 percent of the U.S. population, they account for roughly 30 percent of Americans who contract mesothelioma, a cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, stomach and other organs caused only by asbestos.

Legal experts with the Michigan Association for Justice, point out the bill makes no sense in Michigan. Michigan already has "Transparency" by Court Order and Michigan juries already consider fault of all bankrupt asbestos companies; MI has had apportionment by Statute since the 1990's.

Clack said, "Since the Republican majority in the House of Representatives rolled over like puppy dogs for the Asbestos Companies and the Chamber, the bill now moves to the Senate. It is now left to the Senators on the Senate Competitiveness Committee to decide which side they are on - either Michigan Residents, Veterans and First responders or the Asbestos Companies and their lobbyists."

Smokers’ Rights Group Objects to NYC Council Anti-Smoker Measures

Of course we were assured it would never come to that. Our previous concerns vindicated we now stand by our word that airing objections at what amounts to no more than a pro forma proceeding on a preordained conclusion is not only a waste of time but beneath our dignity. Rather, C.L.A.S.H.'s position, as further stated at that last time at bat, is to advocate peaceful individual resistance. Good men disobey bad laws. One need only to take a stroll in a park or on a beach today to see this is what has unfolded.

Tenaja Environmental Concerns Association Requests County Stop Issuing Kennel Permits

MURIETTA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Tenaja Environmental Concerns Association (TECA) is requesting a call to action from Riverside County public officials to stop issuing kennel permits in Residential and Equine neighborhoods. It says that the existing ordinance needs to be updated to address specific property rights of surrounding residents and to introduce additional conditions to safeguard them from the negative impact these kennels present to these communities.

"When Ordinance 630 was first written, there were more open spaces than there are today. Now, those same spaces are home to residential and equine neighborhoods and while the area has changed, the ordinance has not," Scott Becker, resident and active member of the Tenaja Environmental Concerns Association, says.

As a result, TECA members are asking the county to implement additional conditions before issuing new kennel permits.

"Many counties and cities throughout the U.S. provide for stringent restrictions such as distance and zoning requirements before a kennel permit is approved," Becker says. "Issuing kennel permits in pre-existing residential communities is unfair and unjust to residents and surrounding property owners."

According to TECA members, kennels create the likely potential for a noise nuisance, undue stress and possible health concerns. They significantly decrease surrounding property values and pose a danger to children, domestic pets and horses. These residents also feel that kennels do not belong in the sensitive Santa Rosa Plateau area as the noise, feces and introduction of too many dogs disrupts the natural environment and wildlife.

"We're asking the county to recognize the rights of its citizens and to protect sensitive ecological areas. The current and very antiquated ordinance needs to be amended to provide more protection to the residents of Riverside County," Becker says. "Other surrounding areas such as the City of Riverside, Kern County and San Bernardino County have already updated their ordinance to recognize and define kennels as a commercial use, which would be a prohibited use in residential areas.

A public hearing is scheduled before the County Board of Supervisors on April 25, 2017 at 9 a.m.; Riverside County Building, 4080 Lemon Street, 1st floor. Transportation and carpooling are being provided to the hearing. To schedule a ride, call: 951-660-2586.

Housing Advocates and Los Angeles Residents Call on Los Angeles City Council to Limit Short-Term Rentals in LA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- A growing alliance of affordable housing advocates, local neighborhood renters and homeowners, hotel employees and hotel representatives gathered today in front of Los Angeles City Hall to call on City officials to adopt smart regulations for short-term rentals, according to Keep Neighborhoods First.

Participants urged the City Council to adopt a low limit on the number of days per year a host could rent a unit short-term.

"Regulations must include a cap on the total number of days hosts are permitted to rent short-term. This cap must be low enough as to not economically incentivize landlords to rent short-term instead of long-term," explained Becky Dennison, Executive Director of Venice Community Housing Corporation. "The current draft has a cap that is much too high. We believe the right number is 60 days per year - and other cities agree."

Dennison mentioned caps in Santa Monica and Amsterdam of 60 days; as well as 90-day caps recently implemented in San Francisco, New Orleans and London. Palm Springs enacted a cap of 32 days. The draft ordinance currently being considered in Los Angeles includes a cap of 180 days, or six months out of the year.

The group also expressed strong support for banning any type of short-term rentals in rent-stabilized (RSO) units, arguing that allowing RSO units to be rented short-term will result in significantly more risk for some of our most vulnerable renters than any possible benefit.

"As a longtime tenants' rights advocate, I can assure you that short-term rental practices has literally put a target on the back of every renter living in RSO housing. Tenants are being evicted and units are being converted to short-term because landlords make MUCH more money renting short-term," said Larry Gross, Executive Director of Coalition For Economic Survival. "We can no longer allow short-term rental companies to continue to operate practically unchecked. Their practices of taking critically needed affordable rent control units off the market is making our already dire housing situation worse."

Also on hand were hotel representatives that called on the City to enact regulations built on sound politics, not false budgetary needs. Specifically, the California Hotel and Lodging Association quoted a recent report related to the downfall of cities accepting voluntary taxes from Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms. The voluntary agreements are being questioned all over the nation.

"We're adding the voice of the state's hotel industry to the Los Angeles community asking for a city ordinance that ensures a level playing field for those of us in the hotel industry and full transparency from all short-term rental platforms," said Lynn Mohrfeld, President & CEO California Hotel & Lodging Association.

The City Council is expected to take up the current draft ordinance in coming weeks, beginning with the Planning and Land Use Committee (PLUM).

According to an article published Aug. 8, 2016 by the Napa Valley Register (http://napavalleyregister.com/news/local/city-of-napa-walt-ranch-reach-agreement-on-water-quality/article_5a001e40-4601-5ded-89f5-e2433aefe313.html), the City of Napa estimates it could cost its water ratepayers $20 million to deal with agricultural pollution from this single project.

The water division manager recently wrote to the County to assert that "nutrients and other wastes in its agricultural storm runoff or irrigation drainage 'could affect' - and indeed will affect - the high-quality municipal drinking water supply that the City obtains from Milliken Creek, which runs through the project site before entering the City's Milliken Reservoir less than a mile downstream."

In another smaller, rural community surrounded by the project (Circle Oaks), its water district faces the prospect of running out of water because Walt Ranch would use two-and-a-half times as much water as the community annually - water from a shared aquifer.

Walt Ranch is, by far, the single largest deforestation project planned for Napa County. Other projects are in the pipeline. The continued amputation of forests in high-functioning, healthy watersheds, throughout Napa County favors the short-term financial gains of a few developers over the health of current and future generations.

Property owners have rights, but not to the detriment of their neighbors' rights. For Napa's political leadership, it's business as usual. They're intoxicated by the wine industry's success, blinding them to its destructive force happening today, and obscuring their vision of the long term, sustainable care of our precious shared natural resources.

SAN FRANCISCO: SB277 Protest Rally and Health Freedom March

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 3, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Council for Vaccine Safety announced today that on Friday, July 3, Californians will rally simultaneously in cities across the state, to illuminate the truth and stand for health, safety, education, medical freedom and justice for all. WHEN AND WHERE:

SB277, which was just signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown on June 30th, mandates that all children entering public and private schools, including daycare and preschool, have a full 35 vaccine doses, including vaccines that target non-spreadable diseases and diseases transferred via intravenous drugs and sexual activity. SB277 eliminates all personal belief exemptions as well as religious exemptions. Parents will no longer have the choice to decide with their doctor, based on their own child's specific health conditions, to delay or selectively vaccinate that child and have that child attend public or private school.

This infringes on the state of California's Constitution that states all Californian children have a right to free public education without discrimination. Discrimination includes discrimination based on health status. Currently under California law, children who actually carry diseases such as Hepatitis and HIV are, by law, allowed to be in public school and cannot be discriminated based on their health conditions. Yet children who are healthy and do not carry these diseases will not be allowed in either public or private school across the state.

It is a clear case of discrimination that targets families who choose to a different vaccination schedule due to another family member's previous reaction, countless hours of research on the toxicity of vaccine additives or even a sincere religious objection to vaccine ingredients (which includes aborted fetal cells and animal DNA).

The United States recommends 53 vaccine doses before by age five, which is two to three times the average of other developed countries. The US also has one of the highest infant mortality rates of developed nations despite spending more per capita on healthcare (please see: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3170075/).

Vaccines have never been studied for safety in combination yet 6-9 doses are routinely given during childhood doctor visits. Many vaccine additives, such as aluminum, MSG and formaldehyde, have been repeatedly linked to neurotoxicity, auto-immune diseases and cancer. Currently in the US, vaccines are the only product that has complete liability protection, meaning if you or your child is injured or killed by a vaccine, you cannot sue the vaccine maker. If vaccines are so safe, why must they be mandated and given complete liability protection by the federal government?

The Supreme Court has declared that vaccines are "unavoidably unsafe" (Bruesewitz vs Wyeth LLC, 2011), yet with SB277 California has moved to strip parents of the fundamental right to choose what medical treatments our children are subjected to. While SB277 targets children and their fundamental right to a public education, lawmakers are also planning mandatory vaccination laws that will apply to college students, hospital workers, school staff and the entire adult population. SB277 is a slippery slope and the first of many planned steps to strip Californians of their medical freedoms.
