Springfield Local Schools to save more than $82,000 annually through partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA

TIPP CITY, Ohio /ScoopCloud/ -- Springfield Local School District is poised to launch an energy efficiency project with Energy Optimizers, USA that will save the district more than $82,000 in utility and operational costs annually.

Starting in August 2017, work will begin to upgrade the district's interior and exterior lighting, boilers and boiler controls, and kitchen equipment with more energy efficient systems. This energy efficiency project will include work at Springfield High School, Schrop Intermediate, and Spring Hill and Young Elementary Schools. LED lighting retrofits will be installed in the stadium restrooms.

In addition, Energy Optimizers, USA will provide a three-year energy management and monitoring service agreement to ensure that systems are running as efficiently as possible. This project is expected to yield a savings of more than $82,000 annually, which will enable the district to pay off the $775,000 project in just over 13 years.

"We are building for the future by making smarter use of our energy and our operational dollars," said Springfield Local Superintendent Chuck Sincere. "We will reduce our energy use and cut our utility bills, all without cost to our local taxpayers. The money we save will go right back into serving our students. That's a win for our community all the way around."

The project will be funded through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission's House Bill 264 program, enabling the district to make these cost-cutting improvements at no expense to taxpayers while ensuring the guaranteed savings of the project are met or exceeded. The energy savings will be guaranteed by Energy Optimizers, USA, and the district and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission will receive an annual report verifying the savings.

Energy Optimizers, USA, secures PACE funding for new long-term care facility

TIPP CITY, Ohio /ScoopCloud/ -- When it opens in late 2017, the Livingston Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Washington Township will be the first project in Ohio to install solar energy using PACE funding, an investment made possible with coordination from Energy Optimizers, USA.

PACE, or Property Assessed Clean Energy, funding enables property owners to pay for energy efficiency improvements to their properties and renewable energy installations by borrowing money through government loans or bonds. Funds can be used for new development or existing facilities.

"The PACE funding is notable because it has enabled owner Premier Healthcare Management to invest in more energy conservation measures than they might otherwise have, which will hold down immediate costs while delivering a tremendous payback over the long term," said Greg Smith, president and CEO of Energy Optimizers, USA. "The company can expect about 30 years of operation from solar panels that will be paid off in just 10 years. That's an incredibly cost-effective investment."

The $20 million long-term care facility, currently well into construction, will replace an outdated building on a land-locked site in Dayton. Both solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy will be part of a $3.1 million package of PACE-funded energy efficiency features. The 150-kW solar installation will run up to 20 percent of the facility's electrical load, and the solar thermal will dramatically slash the costs associated with traditional hot water heaters. Both technologies are currently being installed at the site.

Other energy-efficient features include LED lighting, high efficiency HVAC systems, and thicker walls for more insulation. All of the components will work together to conserve energy and keep utility costs in check for the 100,000 square foot facility.

Energy Optimizers, USA, worked with Premier Healthcare Management to identify potential energy management solutions and apply for the PACE funding. The company will also assess and validate all energy savings associated with the project.

Financing for the Livingston project will be provided through the Dayton-Montgomery County Port Authority and the Dayton Regional Energy Special Improvement District, Inc.

Kettering City Schools saves more than $900,000 in utility costs over a three-year period through project with Energy Optimizers, USA

TIPP CITY, Ohio /ScoopCloud/ -- Just three years after partnering with Energy Optimizers, USA, on an ambitious energy improvement project, Kettering City Schools has saved more than $900,000 in utility costs.

The district's energy performance for the period running March 1, 2016, through February 1, 2017, came in higher than estimated for the second year in a row. During this period, the district saved more than $317,000 in utility bills, far exceeding the initial projections of $193,000 in savings. Electric consumption was reduced by 17.9 percent and gas consumption was reduced by more than 29 percent. The savings are normalized, or adjusted to account for outliers in weather conditions and costs.

As a result of its tremendous energy performance, the district will receive a rebate of more than $461,000 from DP&L.

"We set out to invest in the best, most fiscally responsible energy conservation measures that we could, and clearly they are paying off," said Ken Lackey, director of business services for Kettering City Schools. "The projects we have partnered with Energy Optimizers, USA, on are enabling us to make smarter use of our utilities, which in turn makes for better investment of taxpayer dollars."

The project, which began in 2013, included interior and exterior lighting retrofits, districtwide controls commissioning, advanced energy management programming and Energy Star certifications. In 2016, the district tapped Energy Optimizers, USA, to install a 150kW solar photovoltaic system at Kettering Middle School. The system has produced 161,281kWh to date.

This year, the district overhauled its interior lighting with LED systems. In addition to producing a superior quality of light, the LEDs will deliver approximately $151,000 annually in electrical savings. The lights will likely save more after maintenance and operation costs are factored in because LEDs can last up to 20 years.

In Trotwood-Madison City Schools, the district's Green Team has set a goal to encourage recycling by placing collection boxes for recyclable items in classrooms. The district will also unveil a new community garden at its early learning center in 2017.

"With our community garden, students and our community members will be able to experience firsthand the relationship between a healthy planet and healthy bodies," said Marlon Howard, Director of Operations, Trotwood-Madison City Schools.

In addition to providing the materials and support to get the teams up and running, Energy Optimizers, USA, provides scholarships for participating students, an educational trip to The Ohio State University to build a district "Energy Bike" and numerous after-school activities.

At Oak Hills Local Schools, the Green Team's efforts have resulted in a massive recycling project and district-wide energy savings efforts. The team started off the 2016-2017 school year by placing zero-waste tables in all of the district's cafeterias. The zero-waste tables will help each building minimize how much trash goes to the landfill by enabling students and staff to separate their waste into compost, recyclables and trash.

To improve the district's energy efficiency, the Green Team students crafted an email for staff educating them about energy conservation. The message explained that keeping classroom doors closed during the colder months improves the energy efficiency of the heating system. Following the release of the email, the percentage of doors closed rose from 75 percent to 84 percent.

"The Green Teams have been an asset to our schools, not just because they are engaging our students and staff in adopting sustainability principles, but also because they are giving our Green Team members a chance to take on leadership roles in our schools," said Jeff Brandt, Superintendent. "Our students have an opportunity to tackle real-world challenges and see the results of their efforts."

The district expected to save $81,885 on utility costs per year over three years, for a total of $245,655. Actual savings over that period are $409,681. Electric consumption was reduced by 32.4 percent and gas consumption is down by 24.2 percent. The savings are normalized, or adjusted to account for outliers in weather conditions and costs.

"We knew going into this project that it was the right thing to do in terms of conserving both energy and taxpayer dollars," said Don Burley, Director of Operations for Graham Local Schools. "But we are floored by just how much we've been able to save. Better yet, the project has just about paid for itself in terms of savings. What better way to meet the needs of students than ensuring we are directing this money to the classrooms rather than the utility companies."

Completed in 2012, the $574,130 project included:
* Replacement of interior lighting with more energy-efficient lamps.
* Installation of exterior lighting controls to reduce wasted electricity.
* Installation of advanced energy management programming and HVAC controls to improve energy conservation.
* Upgrades to the water and air filtration systems.
* Installation of smart exhaust hoods on kitchen units.

The majority of the work was funded through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission's House Bill 264 program, enabling the district to make these cost-cutting improvements at no additional expense to taxpayers while ensuring the guaranteed savings of the project are met or exceeded.

Trotwood-Madison City Schools saves more than $260,000 after completing energy management project with Energy Optimizers, USA

In total, Energy Optimizers, USA:
