Oklahoma Children’s Theatre announce 2018-2019 Season

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Oklahoma Children's Theatre, the first and largest Theatre for Young Audiences in the state, is proud to announce their 31st Season! We will kick off our season in October, 2018, with a limited run of "Night of the Living Dead."

The 1968 black and white, B-movie horror classic brought to life (figuratively speaking)! Full of thrills, chills, and dark satire. A co-production with our Young Company, NofLD performances are Fridays and Saturday night October 19 - 27, 2018. This production is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

Junie B. Jones, first-Grader, is super-excited to be returning for her 6th year at OCT, November 26 - December 16 in "Junie B Jones in Jingle Bells Batman Smells." Too bad tattletale May will be there to ruin all her fun. So when Junie B. draws May's name for Secret Santa, she comes up with the perfect plan to teach her nemesis a lesson! But will the Christmas spirit of peace and goodwill interfere before she can give you-know-who what she deserves?

The time-honored story of a little duck that just doesn't fit in, "The Ugly Duckling," learns through a series of adventures to appreciate his uniqueness and finally views himself as a very special duck. Appropriate for age 3 and above February 15 - March 1.

March 21 through April 4 a traditional storyteller reading from his all too well-known book of "Sleeping Beauty" is quickly usurped by the story's feisty villain, the evil Griselda. With a magical spell, she literally turns back the hands of time to show what really happened. Appropriate for ages 5 and above.

More fairy tale disruption is on its way April 19 thru May 3 with "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales." In this adaptation of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's quintessential children's book of fractured fairy tales, everything from "Chicken Little" to "The Gingerbread Man" gets a complete makeover. Appropriate for 5 and above.

These great shows will be followed closely by our summertime co-productions with our Young Company. Titles and dates to be announced.

Summer Shakespeare Family Fun Faire at the Shore in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Children's Theatre of Long Beach (CTLB) presents its first Renaissance Faire experience! Partake of delicious food, Play medieval themed games, create fairy wings or armor and top it all off with a 60 minute version of Shakespeare's "MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING!" Aug. 4, 2018 in Long Beach.

For the last several years CTLB has been producing shortened versions of Shakespeare's works that are just perfect to introduce younger audiences to his timeless stories.

Philip Schwadron, Shakespeare instructor, long time Renaissance Faire performer and author does the cutting of the play specifically for these performances.

"I thoroughly enjoy crafting the abbreviated versions of these classics," stated Philip. "I get to spend time with my favorite author and grapple with the essence of his work. I try not to just edit for time, I really look to the core of what is important about all the storylines and original message of the piece."

"Much Ado About Nothing" is the story of young lovers Claudio and Hero getting married in just a week. Looking to pass the time, they conspire to get verbal sparring partners and confirmed singles Benedick and Beatrice to wed as well. Meanwhile, the wicked Don John conspires to break up the wedding by accusing Hero of infidelity. In the end, though, it all turns out to be "much ado about nothing."

This year in addition to the play CTLB has created an entire mini Renaissance Faire at Bay Shore Community Congregational Church to go along with the bard's hilarious play.

"We have Chef Cloyce Martin from 'Man vs Child: Chef Showdown' creating renaissance inspired food. Also, there are games and booths created specifically for this event," noted Hannah McMullen one of the show's coordinators, "as well as specialty acts that will perform throughout the day leading up to the play."

Phil Schwadron began his career on Broadway at the age of 13 in the Tony award winning musical revival of On Your Toes. He appeared, along with his twin brother Steven, on television in Cheers and Beverly Hills 90210 and on film in Safe Passage and She's Out of Control. He and his brother currently write and perform music with the vocal comedy group The Poxy Boggards. Phil has a BA in theatre from CSU Northridge and an MFA from Cal Arts. He spent 10 years teaching Shakespeare, acting and tap dancing at the Orange County School of the Arts. He is also the author of "It's Not Hard to Learn the Bard (A Guide to Teaching Shakespeare to Teenagers)."

Sean McMullen, President of CTLB and designer for this production, works in set design, costume design and is currently on faculty at the Orange County School of the Arts. Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘PIRATES’ dock in Long Beach May 11-20

LONG BEACH, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Children's Theatre of Long Beach (CTLB), Art in Relation (AIR) and the Scottish Rite Event Center present a historic, hilarious family friendly farce featuring silly pirates, bumbling policemen, and nervous naive young lovers - Gilbert & Sullivan's rollicking musical masterpiece, "The Pirates of Penzance," comes alive at the beautiful Ernest Borgnine Theatre at the Scottish Rite Event Center of Long Beach May 11 - May 20, 2018.

"The Pirates of Penzance" is directed by Jennifer Hammond, with musical direction by Jonas Sills and choreography by Cameron Shim. This trio have added their unique brand of silliness and satire to this classic, gathering a cast of 35 to tell the tale.

This marks the second time this talented crew has teamed up to bring Long beach family friendly theatre! Just last December they produced the popular "Christmas Carol"! Both companies founded in 2013, CTLB AND AIR found themselves on similar trajectories, producing musical theatre at the historic Ernest Borgnine theater in Long Beach, Calif.

Artists, producers and long-time friends, Jonas Sills (AIR) and Sean McMullen (CTLB) were reunited to produce this project, with the support of Tim Cable, manager of the historic Borgnine theatre.

"I am proud to be part of a partnership that is truly bringing excellent family friendly entertainment to Long Beach," said Tim Cable. "It is my goal to bring Long Beach to the Borgnine (theatre) and put it on the map!"

Jennifer Hammond, the Director, sums up the plot: "Young Frederic leaves his apprenticeship to the Pirate King and meets and falls in love with the beautiful, yet whacky Mabel. You see, usually Mabel is usually played as an overly dramatic leading lady, but our Mabel is a cross between Lucille Ball and Sarah Jessica Parker a collision of glamour and comedy." Hammond continued, "So, it followed that we should take a look at all our other leads and see them differently as well. Of course, madcap antics ensue and a very 'happily ever after' conclusion is in store for you."

Since the 1870's "The Pirates of Penzance" has been a favorite of musical theatre and light opera fans alike. Joseph Pap's irreverent hit production in 1980 transferred from Central Park and ran years on Broadway receiving five Drama Desk Awards and three Tony Awards. It then travelled to London for a run of 601 performances and in 1983 was turned into a movie that inspired thousands of productions ever since.

Parodies of "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General," the most famous G&S tongue-twisting fast-paced patter-song, have found their way into numerous movies and TV shows such as "Despicable Me 3" (the Minions song), "The Muppet Show," "The Simpsons," and many others.

Sean McMullen, President of CTLB and designer for this production, works in set design, costume design and is currently on faculty at the Orange County School for the Arts. McMullen, recipient of the Long Beach Hero Award, has a MFA in Theatre from CAL ARTS. The creation of CTLB, now in its fourth year, has been his lifelong dream.

McMullen explains, "This is our second Mainstage production in collaboration with Art in Relation and The Scottish Rite Event Center at the amazingly beautiful Ernest Borgnine Theatre. We are humbled and feel blessed to be part of this incredible collaboration!"

Jonas Sills, tenor, conductor and teacher who worked for 15 years as a public school music teacher for the Long Beach Unified School District at virtually every level with a focus on primary and middle school chorus. Sills has directed church choirs for the Unitarian and Methodist Churches and is the founder and artistic director for the Los Angeles Musical Theater Youth Chorus. In recent years he has been drawn to create his own art with his own production company, "Art-In-Relation," producing fully staged and professional productions in Long Beach and Los Angeles.

"It is a joy to work with such talented performers who have the generosity of spirit to bring light opera to kids in such a hilarious way and still sing like pros! Not to mention the 10 piece orchestra comprised of professional and student musicians and getting to perform at this historic gem in the heart of Downtown Long Beach," says Sills.

Top 40-selling Texas State Men and Boys Choir Bound for Carnegie Hall Performance

FORT WORTH, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Imagine performing at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall in New York. That has long been the dream of members of the Top 40-selling Texas State Men & Boys Choir, who are currently celebrating their third anniversary. That anniversary will be marked by: the release of the choir's fourth record, a four-city tour, and a magical Carnegie Hall performance.

An Evening with The Texas State Men & Boys Choir at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall takes place March 15, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. Preview concerts will be held in Austin on February 24, Oklahoma City on March 3, and Fort Worth on March 10.

The Texas State Men & Boys Choir will be joined in this performance by members of the prestigious Texas Girls' Choir, announced Gary McGrath, founder and executive director of the Texas State Men & Boys Choir.

"With this tour, I wanted to be able to show off all three records we've created from the last three years as well as preview our fourth record that comes out May of 2018," McGrath said. "So I asked the leadership of the Texas Girls' Choir if they would be our special guests, and they graciously accepted."

The promise of Carnegie has been a humbling experience for McGrath and his fellow choir members.

McGrath and numerous members of the TSMBC are alums of the Texas Boys Choir and trained since early childhood in classical music. For these hard-training, classical vocalists, the promise of Carnegie is right up there with the possibility of the Dallas Cowboys making a Super Bowl.

"I am so grateful to these men and boys for three years of true dedication and heart," McGrath said. "They [the members of the choir] have really worked hard to show the choral world what they can do in live performance."

Layne Trent, executive director of the Texas Girls' Choir, said the road to Carnegie was made possible by a wonderful growing relationship between her members and members the Texas State Men & Boys Choir.

"Mr. McGrath is a wonderful record producer and has really challenged our girls to continue learning and evolving their musical talent and they have loved every minute of it," Trent said. "This opportunity to do multiple concerts in a full SATB setting is very special and will be the first time in our 55-year history that we've been a part of something like this. To do a wonderful record in our hometown of Fort Worth and then be able to perform selections from it at Carnegie Hall is simply a dream come true."

The combination of the two choirs will be conducted by Choral Master and composer, David C. Featherstone, and Texas State Men & Boys Choir Austin campus director, Morris Crayton.

"This is really exciting," Featherstone said. "These two choirs bring youth and adults together to allow for something that transcends generations and politics and allows [us] to give, not just a musical education, but a way to enrich lives beyond measure."

The Texas State Men & Boys Choir debuted their record, "Prayers, Poems & Promises" on iTunes classical charts at #39 in April 2016.

This was followed in November 2016 with a Christmas CD entitled "Following The Star," which the TSMBC performed with the world-renowned, Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir. It sold out of three pressings.

The TSMBC teamed up again with the Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir and the acclaimed Texas Girls' Choir in August 2017 for a CD that pays tribute to legendary Fort Worth composer Jack Noble White. That CD marked the first time that all three world class organizations teamed up to represent the North Texas region fine arts.

The Littlest Wiseman – The 100-year-old Holiday Tradition Returns for 57th Consecutive Annual Run

FORT WORTH, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- The Fort Worth production of The Littlest Wiseman started as a modest junior high school play about the humble birth of Jesus. Now in its 57th consecutive annual run, the play has evolved into an elaborate production that is one of Fort Worth's longest-running Christmas season entertainment events.

"It's a very simple heartfelt story set against amazing visuals and stunning scenery," said Assistant Director Suzi McLaughlin, a 44-year veteran of the production who was director for 17 years.

But the production wasn't always so elaborate as it is now, a cast member of the early years said.

"The play was a lot simpler - 'pretty much bare bones' - during the first years when The Littlest Wiseman was staged at McLean Junior High School," said Lloyd Walsh. "It was short and simple and didn't have singing and dancing. It was just a simple junior high play."

Walsh's parents, the late F. Howard and Mary D. Walsh, first saw the play in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Littlest Wiseman was written by the Walsh's longtime friend, the late Dr. Lloyd Shaw, superintendent of Cheyenne Mountain School District in Colorado where the play was staged for many years beginning in 1917. Shaw included poetry written by his wife, the late Dorothy Stott Shaw, throughout the script.

"My parents were very close with the Shaws," Walsh said, and they thought the play 'was so special' that "they wanted a Christmas pageant here [in Fort Worth] to give as many people as possible exposure to the story of Christmas."

The late Joe Cleveland, music teacher at McLean, produced and directed the initial Fort Worth production. It was his idea to add a bell choir to the school's music curriculum and to include the bells in a carol service before play performances. The Walshes agreed and purchased a set of bells for the school. Lloyd Walsh was among the original members of the bell choir, which was formed in 1964 and first participated in "The Littlest Wiseman" that year. In honor of their friend, the Walshes named the group The Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir.

"In 1966, the production moved from McLean to the newly opened Scott Theatre. The move offered opportunities for the production to expand and add more elaborate staging," said Walsh.

A grant from the Walsh Foundation funds all aspects of the production, which is truly a gift to the community because every seat at every performance is free.

Reserved tickets are still available for each of the remaining nine 2017 performances.

Two long-time friends, Jonas Sills (A.I.R.) and Sean McMullen (CTLB) reunited under the advisement of Tim Cable, long time Long Beach resident and manager of the gorgeous venue. It was a natural partnership as each entity is primed to flourish with their talents.

Jonas Sills serves as director and music director for this show and is thrilled with both the partnership and the production. "The cast for this show is uniquely diverse, talented, and dedicated to making the story of Ebenezer Scrooge come alive," says Sills. "I can't imagine a better coupling of resources than working with Tim, and Sean!"

Tim Cable is thrilled to return to this production to play the leading role of Scrooge after playing the role in 2014 with A.I.R. He also serves as executive producer. Sean McMullen, a multi-capable theatrical force, serves this production as technical director, handling sets, costumes, lights, sound, and all things that have to do with production values.

This production of "The Christmas Carol" is a unique version written and conceived by Ray Buffer, producer emeritus for A.I.R. It combines a very genuine adaptation of the Dickens classic and infuses appropriate era Christmas carols as well as original music including the sweet, singable title song "The Christmas Carol." The music was orchestrated by Robert Gross.

Pompano Beach Cultural Center Opens with Dazzling Weekend of Events and Rave Reviews

Over one thousand patrons then toured the remarkable new venue, meeting eleven resident companies, exploring the world premiere Cuban art exhibit, "Shipwrecked of Reason" and enjoying performances by an array of musicians and dancers. The festivities then continued throughout the weekend as hundreds of patrons enjoyed The Preview Party fundraiser, Havana Nights and The Florida Grand Opera Family Day.

"The opening of the Cultural Center was truly one of the most exciting events in our City's history," said Mayor Lamar Fisher. "There had been so much anticipation surrounding this day, and everyone who attended was dazzled by the iconic beauty of this venue as much as the incredible performances."

The ribbon cutting ceremony highlighted the mission of the Center of nurturing emerging talent while showcasing internationally renowned artists. Patrons enjoyed the incredible movement of local Eta Nu Step Dancing team to the beat of Fushu Daiko taiko drummers and the Blanche Ely High School Jazz band's performance accompanied by Grammy-winning saxophone player Ed Calle.

"This four-day opening was truly a series of grand events that showcased this iconic new venue and the incredibly diverse programming that is in store for patrons," said Alyona Ushe, President and CEO of The Creatives, the organization which programs and manages the Center. "Thanks to the extraordinary vision of Pompano Beach City leaders, this community now has a venue that will draw national and international talent, while also supporting and nurturing regional and emerging talent."

"Every corner of this venue was activated with phenomenal performances," continued Ushe. "This weekend represented the excitement that will be here on a regular basis, not only with live music and dance performances, but also with visual and multimedia art. Our opening featured both local live art with Todd the Painter and the world premiere Cuban art exhibit, 'Shipwrecked of Reason.'"

This exhibit was curated by internationally renowned curator, Isabel Maria Perez Perez, who came in from Cuba for the event. The show features the top 20 Cuban Contemporary artists and will be on display until the end of July. Havana Nights featured two-time Grammy-award winner Marlow Rosado and brought the exhibit to life with Cuban dancers, big band, cigar rollers, antique cars, Cuban cuisine and coffee. "Our patrons were transported into Havana and enjoyed the best of Cuban culture throughout the night," said Ushe.

Bergen County’s Nunnbetter Dance Theatre Advances to The Youth America Grand Prix Dance Finals in NYC

BERGENFIELD, N.J. /ScoopCloud/ -- Nunnbetter Dance Theatre (NDT), one of Bergen County, New Jersey's premier dance schools, is proud to announce that all three ensemble pieces entered into the Youth America Grand Prix competition earlier this year were awarded a spot in the NYC Finals taking place April 8 and 9, 2017 in New York City.

It is an honor for any dance studio to have one piece make it through to the finals, but an absolutely amazing achievement that the NDT dancers will have the chance to compete with all three of the beautifully choreographed pieces! Awarded a spot in the finals are a classical piece (from Haydn), a contemporary piece (entitled Sand), and a high spirited boys' contemporary piece (from Broadway's "Five Guys Named Moe").

"Everyone at NDT is beyond proud of all of our dancers for this incredible accomplishment," said Ernie Prinz, NDT Company Director. "The dedication and work that the NDT dancers, teachers, and choreographers have put into creating and perfecting these pieces is truly wonderful."

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is the world's largest global network of dance. By the time the YAGP finalists arrive in NYC for the April finals, there will have been preliminary competitions in over two dozen cities worldwide featuring thousands of dance pieces. To date, over 50,000 dancers have participated in YAGP's workshops, scholarship auditions and master classes worldwide.

In addition to the accolades the NDT ensemble pieces received at the regional YAGP competition, three NDT dancers who entered as soloists in the competition were recognized with scholarships and other awards. Erin Aslami, a native of Tenafly, placed in the top 12 in both the Senior Classical Soloist and Senior Contemporary Soloist categories and was offered a scholarship to the UNCSA summer program with an invitation to the UNCSA undergraduate program. Cecilia Hernandez placed in the top 12 in the Junior Classical Soloist division and Lillian Smith was invited to the NCSA Summer and Full Year program. Both young women are residents of Teaneck.

NDT is proud of the students who have worked so hard in their classes and the accomplished teachers who have helped shape these beautiful young dancers.

Art-In-Relation Features a Cavalcade of Talent in a Unique Two Night Engagement

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Jonas Sills, founder and executive producer of Art-In-Relation (A.I.R.), announces a grand benefit performance of "Broadway-LA." After three successful seasons of theater in the Long Beach area, Art-In-Relation made its move to Los Angeles with two acclaimed productions, "Andrew Lippa's Wild Party" and "Frankenstein, A New Musical" in the fall of 2016. They were honored to receive rave reviews and an "Ovation Recommendation" from the LA Theater Alliance.

"Broadway-LA" is a performance of musical theater favorites in the arena style 1200 seat concert venue of the Founder's Center for Positive Spirituality ( www.foundersla.org ). The event will be performed by a cast of 70 adults and youth as well as an instrumental combo. Mr Sills is thrilled with the evolution of this production as it combines veteran professionals with Broadway credits with up and coming artists, as well as developing youth.

"The auditions for this production included the most talented group of performers that we as a creative team have ever seen in the Los Angeles area, and I am so honored to have so many of them join us for this upbeat, exciting show," says Sills.

The show will feature an exciting selection of Broadway musical selections from shows throughout the eras of the Broadway stage. A.I.R. aims to bring the polish, excitement and pizazz of a night at the theater in New York to Los Angeles audiences.

The production team includes Broadway and Off-Broadway veteran, Alan Palmer, as well as Dr. James Lent, professor of piano at UCLA and coach at American Musical Dramatic Academy. Joining us as publicist is VanNessa Hulme, while rounding out the team is Johnathan Tupanjim as stage manager, Christopher Allport, production support/design, and Heidi Sills as production assistant and box office.

Alan Palmer notes, "This performance is not the same everyday selections, but an evening of rarely heard Broadway musical gems."

A.I.R. is keeping with its mission of presenting lesser known pieces, combined with family style entertainment.

Proudly becoming a sponsored non-profit, this performance is the perfect event to further Art-In-Relation's goal of reaching out to the community, and working with charitable organizations. A portion of the proceeds will be given to Createnow.org, a charity which provides arts education, excursions, and enrichment to underprivileged and other youth and families around Los Angeles.

Pompano Beach Cultural Center Announces Resident Companies

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Pompano Beach Cultural Center today announced the names of the 11 regional non-profit organizations that will form the Center's resident companies. This Cultural Alliance is comprised of highly regarded performing arts organizations based in South Florida. Each will offer exciting individual performances, while also collaborating on special events and educational programming.

The highly anticipated debut of the Center is thanks to the dedication of Pompano Beach's visionary city leadership including Mayor Lamar Fisher, city commissioners and city staff. The organizations that have been accepted as members of the Cultural Alliance, through the end of the 2018 season, include Arts Ballet Theatre, Brazilian Voices, Curtain Call Playhouse, Dance NOW! Miami, Florida Classical Ballet, Fushu Daiko, Outre Theatre Company, Rootz of Music, South Florida Chamber Ensemble, South Florida Jubilee Chorus and TheatreSouth.

"This is an outstanding amalgamation of talent," said Alyona Ushe, President/CEO of the Cultural Arts Creatives (The Creatives), the organization hired by the city to program and manage the Center. "Our vision for the Center is to feature the best of the best of South Florida talent, and we are thrilled by the dazzling and diverse array of performing arts groups that will form the foundation of our first season."

A panel of experts in various artistic disciplines selected the collective of 11 members. The Creatives will assist resident companies with marketing, development and the use of latest technology in the creation and presentation of the best regional work.

"Each organization on their own is a dynamic artistic force. Our goal is to give them a grand showcase to display their talents and to encourage them to collaborate and utilize each other's expertise," continued Ushe, who also is planning on commissioning a work that will feature all the Alliance members.

In addition to programming from Alliance members, Ushe has scheduled several signature series including Jazz and Blues programming which will also commence in May.
