Phenomenology Helps Academy for the Fine Arts Find Funds for Dance Studio

FREDERICK, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- Phenomenology, Inc., an innovative production model in the performing arts, stepped up to assist the Academy for the Fine Arts to raise ten thousand dollars in critical funds to finance a state-of-the-art dance studio for Frederick County Public School students.

AFA brings together approximately 100 students across 10 public high schools who are interested in learning visual art, dance, music, and theatre. Even though AFA serves students from all 10 FCPS high schools, it does not receive any direct funding and must rely on allotments from the general budget provided by Governor Thomas Johnson High School, where AFA is located.

"As a corridor for the performing arts, a core component of our mission is to provide high value resources and opportunities for professional, amateur and student artists in Frederick, Maryland," said Artistic Director and CEO of Phenomenology, Jeffery Keilholtz. "As soon as this need was brought to our attention, our team connected AFA to important partners that could help."

Keilholtz worked with AFA Coordinator, Jonathan Kurtz, to position the non-profit organization as fiscal sponsor for AFA, to attract grant funding. As a result, AFA secured financing through a generous grant from Delaplaine Foundation, Inc.

"We cannot thank our community partners enough for getting involved and recognizing our need. We have been waiting five years to create an adequate studio space for our dancers and we are excited to finally make that happen. These funds will allow our program to expand and add new areas of focus, with the goal of reaching more FCPS students to help them prepare for their post-secondary experience."

Funds will be used to install a sprung dance floor in a new studio space. To date, dance students share the TJ High School auditorium stage for rehearsal with theatre students. A new studio will allow dancers and actors to have adequate and separatee rehearsal spaces to meets the needs of each program.

World Dance Group culminates 2020 with LIKE$, the best digital contest for dance lovers

Today it is not strange to find dancers, world champions in their categories, working as food distributors, UBER drivers, collectors and sellers of renewable products, and as dependents in supermarkets. All respectable jobs and of great value to society, but far away from their true professions.

The World Dance Group, as an organization committed to supporting the thousands of musicians and dancers who bring so much joy to the audience, has decided to implement a whole range of activities to help the sector regain opportunities and revenue. The dance-challenge 2020 based on the LIKE$ innovative platform is their last major activity of 2020.

Converting likes into dollars is a kind of mirage for dancers, a dream that is fun to imagine, but that is not possible, or that was not possible until now, because that's what It's all about, uploading a video that you've recorded in 2020 with the routine of your choice and with the music genre you like the most, to the official LIKE$ website, to promote it among your friends, get a lot of likes, and make money based on how many votes (LIKE$) you can raise.

At the end of the year, the dancer with the video who has received the most votes (LIKE$), will get $2,020 as a prize, from the WDG. But not only will the dancer who has obtained the most votes be the winner, but each dancer will receive up to 50% prize money, based on the most popular video he or she has uploaded to the platform. What does this mean? That if your video got 500 votes or LIKE$, for example, even if it wasn't the most popular video of the contest, you'll still get $250 as a prize.

In short, the competition can be summarized in:

1. Record a video with a minimum of one-minute duration. (You can record it on your mobile, or with the device of your choice.)

2. Sign up for free on the https://www.dance-challenge.com/ website and post your videos, just like you do on social media.

3. Notify your loved ones, friends and followers to support your video with a vote (free or paid).

4. Wait until December 31 to find out how many dollars you have earned from the votes (LIKE$) you managed to get for as long as your material was posted.

5. If you are the author of the video with the most LIKE$ of the platform, you will be crowned as the Ultimate Champion of 2020 and be a special part of the next great dance documentary that is currently produced by WDG.

Plano Texas Resident Takes the Stage for 80th Time as Scrooge in NTPA’s Production of ‘Scrooge, the Musical’

PLANO, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- North Texas Performing Arts announces that Plano resident Darrell Rodenbaugh, who has played the title role of Scrooge since the tradition began in 2011, is again taking the stage in its 10th annual Christmas celebration of "Scrooge - The Musical" presented by Transamerica.

This year's special tenth anniversary of "Scrooge, the Musical" will feature over 100 actors in this holiday favorite that has captivated in 80 performances over the past decade. This year for the first-time ever, NTPA will offer audiences an option to view "Scrooge, the Musical" from the comfort and safety of their own home with a livestream high-quality video experience.

Since 2011 and by the end of this year's schedule, Rodenbaugh will have taken the stage some 80 times, attended by over 10,000 patrons. Over a decade, Rodenbaugh has dedicated an estimated 2,000 rehearsal/practice hours into this role and "Scrooge, the Musical" productions.

While theatres often have multi-year program runs, it is highly unusual to cast the same character in the same leading role. NTPA creates an annual tradition centered around this program that typically includes caroling, visits from Santa, and special "Gift to the Community" shows where they waive ticket fees and provide gifts and treats to veterans, underprivileged, and this year, those stricken with Covid-19 economic challenges.

"I come back each year because I believe in Scrooge's very special message of rebirth and redemption," explains Rodenbaugh. "It teaches us that we have the opportunity to start our lives all over again and change for the better, and now, more than ever, we need this positive message of history's second greatest Christmas Story."

Rodenbaugh's performance was described in a Dallas Morning News review some years ago as "brilliant ... robust and passionate," and the show continues to gain each year in its following with many patrons making it a "Christmas Tradition" to see NTPA's "Scrooge - The Musical."

"You might think after ten years he would ease off, but each year he pushes to make it bigger and better," says the show's Director Mike Mazur. "And while he has brought the role to life so many times, each year he re-auditions and earns his spot, then goes on to become one of the hardest working members of the cast."

In this year's special production, Darrell will be joined by his son Christopher Rodenbaugh as Young Scrooge who played the role from its opening season through 2016. Unable to perform in the production since 2017 due to attending an out-of-state college, Christopher is excited to reprise the role once again this year which includes a powerfully heart-breaking duet with his father.

"Darrell continues to re-invent this character each year with such attention to detail," says Plano Children's Theatre Founder and four-time "Scrooge" Director Sara Akers who is now NTPA's VP of Community Affairs. "He effectively brings us from hating him to celebrating with him at the end and the entire performance is a true delight!"

"Our first year was largely as a 'team building' and fundraising activity for the Plano Children's Theatre (PCT) Board of Directors," explains Rodenbaugh, "and it's been humbling to see it grow from a little over a dozen to over 100 actors this year and become NTPA's biggest annual box office production."

Since reopening in June, North Texas Performing Arts has adopted a strict protocol of mask requirements, safe social distance guidelines, and health checks. Theatre seating is limited to enable distancing between groups in compliance with the Governor's guidelines, and streaming is available to those preferring to view these performances online. Actors must wear protective masks at all times (including onstage), and no more than 30 performers at a time are permitted on a safe socially distant stage.

In its exciting tenth anniversary production of "Scrooge, the Musical," this North Texas Christmas tradition has been critically acclaimed and historically plays to sell-out crowds. The show regularly tops regional "must-see" event lists for the Christmas Season. "Scrooge" closely follows the plot of Charles Dickens' acclaimed book, "A Christmas Carol." The movie adaptation received four Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe nominations. "Scrooge" was written by award-winning songwriter Leslie Bricusse, creator of the musical versions of "Jekyll & Hyde" and "Willy Wonka."

This year's production is directed by award-winning and off-Broadway and international performer Mike Mazur, with support from the show's Music and Children's Director, NTPA Resident Director Kaitlyn Wright, and Choreographer, award-winning NTPA Resident Director Hannah Makepeace.

Pompano Beach Arts presents Exit 36 Slam Poetry Festival

'Eccentrich' was born and raised in Pompano Beach, is the winner of a Pompano Beach Cultural Arts Award recognizing outstanding creativity and has graced the stages of over 45 venues from Florida to California. She is a member of the celebrated spoken word team, Dada, which finished first in the nation during the 2017 National Poetry Slam. Her poetry is also featured on Button Poetry, an acclaimed platform committed to developing a coherent and effective system of production, distribution, promotion and fundraising for performance poetry.

The World Salsa Championship Reinvents Itself with Its First Virtual Edition And $2,020 In Cash Prizes

"The World Salsa Championship reinvents itself through digital platforms. From December 2nd, all interested persons will be able to attend and participate in up to 15 completely free events, such as streaming concerts, workshops and networking sessions. Attendees will even learn how to use emerging technology like augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to help dancers, musicians, and singers who are socially distanced. Phenomenology Virtually Connects Broadway Talent to Public Schools During COVID-19

FREDERICK, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- Phenomenology, Inc., an innovative production model in the performing arts, is facilitating connections between Broadway performers and the Academy of Fine Arts, which brings together more than 80 students across 10 public high schools who are interested in learning visual art, dance, music and theatre.

As public school programs across the United States struggle to establish meaningful curriculum due to remote and socially-distanced learning, caused by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency, Phenomenology decided to take action to help bring master class programming to the AFA, featuring numerous Broadway performers, including, Jon Rua ("Hamilton"), Matt Wolpe ("Finding Neverland"), Jawan Jackson ("Ain't Too Proud"), Ginna Claire Mason ("Wicked") and others.

"As a corridor for the performing arts, the central mission of Phenomenology is to bring Broadway talent, projects and opportunities to Frederick, Maryland," said Jeffery Keilholtz, CEO/Artistic Director of Phenomenology. "Because of the leadership structure of our organization, Phenomenology is uniquely positioned to help connect AFA students to many of the most exciting performers on Broadway, and we are committed to increasing those opportunities for students in this new school year in a safe and effective way."

Broadway performers will conduct master classes for AFA students in remote fashion, where students and performers connect with each other online and in real time.

The AFA is an artistic community and career pathway program for Frederick County Public School students in grades 10-12. According to AFA Coordinator, Jonathan Kurtz, students participate in rigorous instruction that prepares them to enter some of the most demanding collegiate and professional arts programs. Some AFA classes are also for college credit.

"Phenomenology is providing access to Broadway professionals given that travel is not a possibility in our COVID-19 environment," says Kurtz. "Students are still able to learn from the experience of professionals and engage with them, thanks to the connections that Phenomenology provides."

Earlier in 2020, Phenomenology worked with AFA and area schools to facilitate a virtual performance opportunity for Maryland students by having Jackson ("Ain't Too Proud"), as their audience. Jackson also provided one-on-one insight with many of the student performers. Phenomenology also arranged to have Mason ("Wicked"), as a surprise AFA commencement speaker for graduating students in 2020.

Jackson and Mason are working with AFA students again, thanks to this new, more robust initiative facilitated by Phenomenology.

And given the increased in shrillness of Donald Trump's rhetoric as of late, there seems to be no better time to launch this effort than now."

Online applications for micro-grants and the second telethon opened on Friday, May 1. Artists and performers from all LGBTQ+ backgrounds are encouraged to apply. ‘Ain’t Too Proud’ Star, Jawan Jackson, Hits a High Note with Students During Pandemic

FREDERICK, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- Phenomenology, Inc., an innovative production model in the performing arts, is teaming up with Jawan Jackson, star of the hit Broadway musical "Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations," to encourage high school musical theater students in Frederick, Maryland.

With statewide shutdowns across Maryland, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency, many theater students who would have otherwise performed in their high school musicals during the spring semester will be unable to showcase their talent, on stage, this year. As a result, Jeffery Keilholtz, CEO/Artistic Director of Phenomenology, decided to take action.

"We were encouraged by many Broadway stars who have used their social media platforms to inspire students during the COVID-19 challenge," said Keilholtz of he and his organization's Board of Directors, "so we chose to join forces with one of the kindest and most talented musical theater actors on Broadway, to lift the spirts of students who go to school in Frederick County."

In cooperation with Jackson, the "Ain't Too Proud" sensation agreed to "be the audience" for Frederick County high musical theater students, Keilholtz explains. For a set period of time, students are able to post the songs they would have otherwise sung on stage and post them online. In turn, Jackson will view the posts and provide a personalized message of encouragement for those that do.

Jackson has also agreed to answer questions posed by some of the students in a private email exchange, arranged by Phenomenology. "We hope to create a safe space for students to still perform, and also provide a mentorship opportunity with one of Broadway's top performers," says Keilholtz. "It's the least we can do for Frederick County students and we couldn't be more thrilled to have a powerhouse like Jawan as a partner."

Now through April 25, Frederick County high school students can participate when they post a song they sing to their own social media pages and tag Phenomenology or post directly to one of the organization's social media platforms on Facebook (@phenoart), Twitter (@phenoart) or Instagram (@phenoart2).

The Center Stage Studio opened its doors 15 years ago in 2005 with one room, a stage made out of boxes and a shower curtains sewed together for a stage curtain.

Modest means however big dreams by studio founder Tracey Ball. "I used to wake up at 6 a.m. and bring my pillow to my studio and lay by the phone in case it rang. It's one thing to have a dream but you hope that others believe in you too!"

Within one year, Tracey went from 18 students to over 200 being one of the 1st schools to secure licensing to "High School Musical." Within 5 years CSS acquired a theater, this time with real curtain rigging, an elevated stage and tech booth; Along with a full conservatory with classes in voice, acting, comedy, jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, lyrical and acrobatics. "I grew up in Foster homes aging out when I was 17. My last foster family saved my life. I know what it is like not to fit in having gone to 8 elementary schools and 3 high schools. About Ralph Brunson:

Ralph Brunson, also known as "Ragtime Ralph" around Long Beach, has been a pianist since the age of thirteen when his mother got him an old upright player piano that he learned from. Having played trombone since fifth grade, he developed a good ear and could easily read music. As a young Naval officer stationed in Boston, Ralph attended The New England Conservatory of Music for jazz piano performance. Then after moving to Long Beach, California in the late 80s, he attended UCLA for TV and film music composition; Golden West College for songwriting and vocal techniques; and the Los Angeles Academy for New Musical Theatre for three years as a student composer, book writer, and lyricist.

The Open Book Theatre Presents Unique Holiday Entertainment for the Whole Family

The film follows thirteen dancers, each defining their unique style of dance to illuminate their concerns about the future. The performance is to the words and music of Jour Majesty's single, "Youthful Faces."

"The lyrics completely spotlight the anxieties of our youth," says Choreographer Lane Napper. "Glowing shiny faces swiping for affirmation, Page by page in a sea of distraction and the people took no action, and the earth became fractured."

Each performer came up with their own interpretation of the song and lyrics to capture their feeling about our current societal condition.

"I am extremely grateful to participate in 'Youthful Faces' to help inspire today's youth to have hope for the future and to courageously take action to drive positive change," says sixteen-year-old Kathryn Zimmer (Broadway: "Matilda"). "Youthful Faces" will premiere at the Cutting Room International Short Film Festival in New York City on October 19, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. The musical short is nominated for "Best Music Video" and "Best Director of a Music Video" by the festival. ‘Love Jones the Musical’ Playwright Timothy Allen Smith takes on ‘Choice,’ with new stage drama

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Twenty/20 Productions announces Timothy Allen Smith, the wordsmith behind 2016's record breaking, "Love Jones The Musical," is premiering a new stage play at The Beverly Hills Playhouse in September 2019.

Smith, who followed up Love Jones with "Neighborhood Barbershop," starring Academy Award winner Mo'Nique, is back at it with "Choice." After dealing with such topics as black love on Love Jones and black family on Barbershop, Smith is not shying away from more controversial subject matter this time around.

"It's important as story tellers that we don't run from relevant topics, particularly when you're talking about people of color," says Smith. "Gospel plays and comedies focusing on family are great, but those aren't the only stories we can tell. We have to reach beyond subject matter considered safe for African American writers because, when it comes to issues that affect all of us, our unique cultural experience offers a unique insight that needs to be heard."

Smith says he wants to change the narrative. "The mere fact that something I wrote almost twenty years ago is more relevant today than it was then speaks to exactly where we are as a nation. We have to reframe the conversation so that it's less about changing anyone's mind and more about gaining understanding."

One thing that won't change with "Choice" is Smith's commitment to creating strong female leads. The show features one of his most compelling characters to-date. "When writing Choice, I honestly didn't set out to make any kind of political statement," says Smith. "We had been auditioning for another show and one of the performers blew us away in her audition. I was so inspired by her performance that I went home that night determined to create a character I felt would challenge her. That is where the character Michelle was born. I even named her after the young lady who auditioned that day."

Smith and team had a similar experience auditioning Ani Marderosian for the role of Kim in Choice. "When Ani walked in the room, I didn't want to let her leave. I kept asking the poor girl to stay and read again and again because, quite honestly, she embodied everything I was looking for and she made it look effortless. Talent like that is rare."

The role of Anna is being played by stage and TV veteran Joey Jupiter-Levin who, Smith says, is special. "Every great story needs a great antagonist, and every great antagonist has great charisma. That's Joey. She's just one of those rare performers you can't take your eyes off, even when you want to hate her."

The rest of the cast includes Thomas Channing Nash (Brian), Rodney Fitts (Gregory), Keelia Flinn (Julie), Jessie Reeder (Heather) and Mackenzie Possage as Michelle.

Smith is willing to tackle a controversial subject even though he knows it comes with some risk. "Anytime you deal with a divisive issue, you have to be willing to piss somebody off," admits Smith. "But at the end of the day we have to decide who we are. This nation was literally founded on the concept of self-determination and, the reality is, that's not always going to be pretty. People with free will and the right to decide for themselves are not always going to make choices you agree with. To me, the question is, do we still believe in a society where every citizen has the right to choose their own path?"

Author, activist, producer, and playwright Timothy Allen Smith is a native of Philadelphia. Currently based in Los Angeles, his latest project, "Choice" is set to open at The Beverly Hills Playhouse on September 7 and run through September 29.

Flores; with live jazz music from artist Yosvany Terry; modern dance from Ramon Ramos Alayo; video projection by Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi; and hip-hop beats from DJ Leydis. Directed by Rosalba Rolon.

All events are free and open to all ages.

Before the performance, the public is invited to join Paul S. Flores, Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi, Ramon Ramos Alayo, and Yosvany Terry for a storytelling workshop on March 9, 2019, 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Participants will first learn to tell a fun and important first-person story about a tradition in the Bronx they want to continue, or that they want to understand better. They will then learn to integrate live or recorded music, dance, or video into their performance to create a multimedia story about traditions in the Bronx.

March 9 is also the last day to see "We Have Ire: Afro-Cuban in the United States." This exhibition tells the story of Cuban and Cuban-American artists Flores, Terry, Alayo, and DJ Leydis, focusing on their influences and dreams through photography, video and cultural objects.

Artist Bios:
Paul S. Flores' deep dive into themes of transnationality and citizenship comes at a crucial time in contemporary history. Flores creates plays and oral narratives that spur and support societal movements that lead to change. Flores's last play, "On The Hill: I Am Alex Nieto" brought together San Francisco communities that had been divided by gentrification and police violence. Flores' ability to paint a vivid picture of bi-cultural Latino experience is shaped by his personal background and experience growing up near the Mexican border. He began presenting spoken word as a founding member of Youth Speaks and Los Delicados in 1996.

He performed for the first time in Cuba in 2001 while working at La PeÃ±a Cultural Center, and has since presented multiple times in Havana, Mexico and El Salvador. His comprehensive body of work touches on the immigrant story in all its complexities: from violent forced migration, gang life, war, incarceration and separated families-to zooming in on intergenerational relationships and the struggle of preserving important cultural values.

Paul Flores's newest play, "Pilgrim Street," premiered September 13-16, 2018 at Z Space Theater in San Francisco. His next play, "We Have Ire," about Afro-Cuban traditions, immigration and artists in the United States, premieres in 2019. He is an adjunct professor of theater at the University of San Francisco.

Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi is a graduate of UC Berkeley and received his MA degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Eli is an award-winning filmmaker and currently directs FistUp TV, a production company that documents people's stories from around the world as a way to expand community awareness around issues of social responsibility and cultural identity. His work has circulated through the National Broadcast: Free Speech TV, Teaching Channel and PBS. He is the co-founder of Defend Puerto Rico, a multimedia project designed to document and celebrate Puerto Rican creativity, resilience, and resistance. Eli is curating his ninth Annual Fist Up Film Festival in the Bay Area, California. His dedication to his craft is deeply connected to his commitment to social justice and the belief in the transformative power of film.

Upon graduating from Newark's prestigious performing arts high school, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in music performance with a certification in music education from Kean University. Outvisible Theatre Company Presents Sexy, Seductive Drama in Time for Valentine’s Day

ALLEN PARK, Mich. /ScoopCloud/ -- Outvisible Theatre Company presents David Ives' award-winning "Venus in Fur" - running February 14 through March 3, 2019. "Venus in Fur" is a modern take on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's "Venus in Furs," an 1870 novella which draws on themes of female dominance and sadomasochism, a term coined for the work.

"The first time I read this play, I was enthralled," said director, Adriane Galea. "It's so smart in the way that it weaves literary references and mythology and a dialogue on feminism into the story, but it also has this undercurrent of seduction. And the way it ends is really wild."

David Ives' telling of the classic tale places aspiring actress, Vanda Jordan, in an audition for Thomas Novachek's adaptation also entitled "Venus in Fur," reading with the adapter himself. The role of Vanda is being played by Dani Cochrane, who notes that the script is "an electrifying power play."

As the audition goes on, the lines start to blur between what is scripted and what is reality, as the two embark on a journey of dominance and submission, and who holds the power changes from line to line. As the story unfolds, it "will have you wondering at any given time, who is really holding the cards?" said Cochrane.

On the surface, "Venus in Fur" may seem like a play about S&M - as even Vanda notes throughout - but there's a lot more being said about societal constructs. Joshua Brown, who plays Thomas, notes that theatre helps the audience "rethink previous held beliefs - and to grow," and that's more aligned with the messaging of the play.

"The true gift of any art form is its ability to allow us exploration of all facets of our existence - and gain a further understanding of our world - to question limits. 'Venus in Fur' is such an opportunity," said Brown.

"Venus in Fur," which opens on Valentine's Day, is not a traditional date play, but could be a fun alternative to flowers and chocolate. Or for the single theater goer looking for good storytelling or to escape the drab winter, there is an opportunity to simply come see "an amazing story - that shows the empowerment of women no matter what their role," according to the show's costume designer, Cheryl Zemke of Z Creations.

Outvisible advises patrons that "Venus in Fur" contains strong sexual content and that minors will not be permitted to see the show without parental consent. "'Venus' is definitely the most risque show we've ever done here, but nothing is done for shock value; it's about art," said Galea. "At its core, this is a dialogue on sex and gender, but we want everyone to feel comfortable with what they're seeing, especially since our performance space is so tiny. But this show is something I could watch over and over again and discover something new and interesting."

About "Venus in Fur":
Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale "Venus in Fur." Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress-oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas' interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win.

In "THE FATHER" by August Strindberg, a wife will do anything to maintain control over her daughter's academic and religious education and goes so far as to cast doubts as to whether her husband is the father of that daughter. The husband, an army captain, is a scientist and a "free thinker" and would do anything to have his daughter educated in town and perhaps become a teacher.

An epic battle of the sexes ensues and everything and everyone is fair game, including manipulating the town Pastor and Doctor to play their parts. Written in 1887, this battle is as fierce now, as ever.

Arts Detroit Launches Spectra, a Theatre Program for Students on the Autism Spectrum

PLYMOUTH, Mich. /ScoopCloud/ -- A new theatre education program will be offered by Arts Detroit for students on the Autism Spectrum and with Aspergers inside of their performing arts studio at PARC - Plymouth Arts and Recreation Complex. Spectra will be a course to help students on the Autism Spectrum learn theatre techniques that can help them develop life skills as well.

The course will be taught by a local professional actor and arts educator, Taylor Morrow Johnson, who has been working on theatre for people with specials needs for more than five and half years. She will focus the class on the processes of character development, memorization, repetition, and creative thinking, which will help students begin to make connections between performing and self-awareness. The class will focus on using preexisting plays and characters to enhance their stage presence and help develop personal characteristics.

Ms. Johnson says she is excited for Spectra because she "has seen first-hand how influential theatre can be on people, regardless of age or ability, and theatre consistently fosters an environment of creativity, thoughtfulness, and fun." She further believes that students who participate in Spectra will "be a part of an ensemble that will work as a team and gain a support system within each other."

Arts Detroit Executive Director, Adriane Galea, says creating a program for students with special needs has been on her radar for quite some time. "Creating theatre is a powerful tool for developing empathy, encourages out-of-the-box thinking, and creates a real sense of belonging. I have heard from parents and other folks who work with students on the Spectrum that these kids often want to get involved with theatre but don't have traditional access to it, so I'm very proud that Arts Detroit can provide an outlet for students of all abilities."

While Arts Detroit is currently only offering Spectra classes at their location in Plymouth, there are plans to expand programming to their Allen Park location as well as to open it up to other avenues of the performing arts.

Spectra will be offered for students ages 14 and up on Thursdays from 4-4:45 p.m. and students ages 11-14 on Thursdays from 4:45-5:30 p.m. a part of their normal programming, and for students ages 4-6 on Fridays from 11:15am-noon through Plymouth PEP, a joint programming effort between tenants at PARC and the Plymouth YMCA.

The PARC family is also excited to bring this type of programming into their building. Gail Grieger, the PARC Executive Director, said, "We are delighted that Arts Detroit will be offering the Spectra Theatre Program at our facility. This program makes a great addition to the other opportunities already provided by the performing arts and educational organizations located at PARC and will be a great resource for the entire community."

L.A. Artists and Performers to Salute Beyond Baroque’s 50th at Nov. 10 Gala

Among the performers slated to take the stage are John Doe and Exene Cervenka (who first met at Beyond Baroque and formed the iconic LA band X); John Densmore, founding member of The Doors; legendary jazz trumpeter Bobby Bradford; Chris D (Divine Horsemen; Flesh Eaters); Julie Christensen (Divine Horsemen; Leonard Cohen); and poet Kamau DaÃ¡ood, among others.

"We'll celebrate 50 years of Beyond Baroque with an evening of art, music, poetry, wine, and revelry," said Beyond Baroque director Richard Modiano, "and we invite the community to join us in honoring our dear friend, actor Viggo Mortensen for his selfless support, and our visionary poet-in-residence Will Alexander for his profound achievements in expanding the artistic possibilities of language."

The event includes a live and silent auction offering rare literary artifacts from Beyond Baroque's archive, and more than 30 works of art from some of the world's most notable artists, including Ed Ruscha, Gronk, Raymond Pettibon, Shepherd Fairey, and Francisco Toledo. Items donated by the Venice business community will also be auctioned.

Attendees are invited to tour the landmark arts complex surrounding the former Venice City Hall (now occupied by Beyond Baroque) including unique sustainable landscaping curated by Kiss The Ground and Safe Place for Youth, enjoy cocktails in the Poet's Garden and artwork in the Mike Kelly Gallery, and explore the unique collection of poetry and literature for sale in the bookstore.
