New Residential Facility Opens in Clayton County, Bringing Much-Needed Addiction Treatment Access to South Atlanta

JONESBORO, Ga., May 15, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Samba Recovery Atlanta today announced it will officially open its Jonesboro facility to patients on May 18, 2026, expanding access to medically supervised detox and structured residential addiction treatment in Clayton County. Local leaders and community members previously gathered on April 13, 2026, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house to mark the completion of the facility.

The opening arrives at a critical juncture for the south Atlanta region. According to recent public health data and Southern Regional Medical Center’s Community Health Needs Assessment, Clayton County faces unique vulnerabilities that compound substance use disorders:

  • OVERDOSE RATES: A statewide opioid continuum-of-care assessment placed Clayton County among the top 15 Georgia counties for total opioid overdose deaths in 2022.
  • AT-RISK POPULATIONS: The county currently ranks 47th among Georgia counties for nonmedical drug use and 46th for mental distress.
  • THE TREATMENT GAP: Compounded by above-average unemployment and high rates of underinsured residents, local options for the immersive residential treatment required for severe addiction have been very limited, often forcing families to travel long distances for immediate help.

“On behalf of Clayton County, I’m proud to welcome Samba Recovery Atlanta to our community,” said Clayton County Commissioner DeMont Davis. “The need for compassionate, high-quality treatment has never been greater, and this facility represents exactly the kind of resource Clayton County needs. Samba Recovery Atlanta will give individuals and families a place to find support, healing, and hope close to home.”

The project also represents a physical revitalization of the community. Samba Recovery transformed a formerly distressed, bankrupt property into a modern healing environment, an investment that has also created local jobs.

“Our mission is to transform lives through compassionate, evidence-based care, restoring hope, health, and connection for individuals and families impacted by addiction and mental health,” said Josh Bamberger, CEO of Samba Recovery. “We cherish the partnerships we have formed here. Let’s make today the start of something extraordinary as we work toward the common goal of lasting recovery.”

Sobriety Is Suddenly ‘Chic,’ But It’s Not New – It’s Been in Fiction for Decades

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Feb. 27, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Recent coverage in major outlets, including a New York Times feature on the rise of “sober party girls” and alcohol-free social spaces, has framed not drinking as a newly emerging cultural trend. From curated sober parties to alcohol-free bars and wellness-driven nightlife, sobriety is increasingly being rebranded as aspirational, social and even chic, The Evolution of Publishing Institute announced today.

'Recovery Rocks' is available on all major podcast platforms
Image caption: “Recovery Rocks” is available on all major podcast platforms.

But for many authors, the emotional terrain behind this trend is far from new.

Nearly two decades ago, Anna David explored addiction, denial and recovery in her novel “Party Girl,” which centered on a young woman navigating the highs of Hollywood party culture and the long, complicated road back from substance dependence. Before that, Marian Keyes’ hilariously covered an Irish girl’s journey through alcoholism, rehab and recovery in her classic novel “Rachel’s Holiday.”

Both “Rachel’s Holiday” and “Party Girl” arrived well before the explosion of what is now known as “Quit Lit” – a category that has since grown to include bestselling memoirs such as “We Are the Luckiest” by Laura McKowen, “How to Murder Your Life” by Cat Marnell, “Quit Like a Woman” by Holly Whitaker, “Girl Walks Out of a Bar” by Lisa Smith and “Sober Curious” by Ruby Warrington.

But while recovery memoir has flourished over the past decade, novels about addiction and sobriety remains comparatively rare. Both Keyes and David offered fictional stories that explored the psychology of denial, the seduction of nightlife and the messy process of getting sober with a dose of humor and lightness not always attainable in memoir.

“I wanted to write a novel rather than a memoir because it felt like a memoir would just be too earnest,” David says. “I knew it would be much easier to make fun of the main character if it wasn’t just a straight ‘this happened, then this happened, then this happened’ sort of thing.”

After a nearly decade-long hiatus, David is now returning to the mainstream recovery conversation as co-host of the Signal award winning podcast “Recovery Rocks,” along with “Girl Walks Out of a Bar” author Smith. The podcast, which Smith originally created and co-hosted with “Dry Humping” author Tawny Lara, explores the lived experience behind sobriety’s cultural evolution. It features interviews with authors and other leaders in the recovery movement.

As sober social life continues to attract mainstream attention, “Recovery Rocks” is one of the many resources out there that addresses various aspects of recovery.

“The amount of content available today for people struggling with addiction is mind-boggling,” David says. “It’s been amazing to watch recovery make its way to the mainstream.”

“Recovery Rocks” is available on all major podcast platforms.

From Revolving-Door Rehabs to Real Recovery: Jimmie Applegate Exposes the Truth in New Book ‘Addicted to Failure’

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Jan. 28, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — In his searing new book, “Addicted to Failure: Why the Rehab System Doesn’t Work and What Must Change” (ISBN: 978-1968339876 paperback; 978-1968339883 ebook, Legacy Launch Pad Publishing), author and addiction reform advocate Jimmie Applegate takes aim at a $16 billion industry that profits from relapse and exposes why traditional rehab models fail to deliver real recovery.

Book: ADDICTED TO FAILURE by Jimmie Applegate
Image caption: “Addicted to Failure” by Jimmie Applegate.

A longtime observer and critic of the addiction treatment industry, Applegate draws on research, interviews and survivor stories to reveal the shocking truth: America’s rehab system is broken by design, exploiting families while offering outdated one-size-fits-all programs that rarely lead to lasting healing.

“Addicted to Failure” (ISBN: 978-1968339876 paperback; 978-1968339883 ebook, Legacy Launch Pad Publishing) gives readers more than a critique—it provides a roadmap. Applegate shows how evidence-based alternatives such as trauma-informed therapy, neuroscience-driven care and long-term recovery support could replace the revolving-door rehabs that dominate today’s market.

“Relapse isn’t personal failure – it’s a system built to fail you,” Applegate says. “Addiction treatment should be about transformation, not transactions. We need a model that heals brains, honors lived experience and restores human dignity.”

In “Addicted to Failure,” Applegate unpacks the myths behind 12-step dominance, exposes the financial exploitation driving short-term treatment and explains how neuroscience reveals a longer path to recovery than insurance companies want to admit.

The book arrives as overdose deaths continue to soar across the U.S. and families are desperate for answers. Applegate’s call to action is urgent: tear down the outdated systems and replace them with models grounded in science, compassion and accountability.

“Every year we lose over 100,000 people to overdoses, many of whom went through treatment that was never designed to help them succeed,” Applegate says. “It’s time to stop calling failure recovery. Real healing is possible—but only if we have the courage to change everything.”

Jimmie Applegate’s groundbreaking non-fiction book “Addicted to Failure” is available now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other major booksellers.

Brazilian Gangsta Rapper, Once an Addict and Drug Dealer, Now Uses His Music and Passion to Reach Kids With the Truth About Drugs

CUIABA, Brazil /ScoopCloud/ -- Growing up surrounded by gangs, crime, and violence that plagued his neighborhood in Cuiabá, Brazil, in the '80s and '90s, Diogenes Luiz de Oliveira tried to escape from that life by using and trafficking drugs. Now, he uses his own story and the drug education materials of Foundation for a Drug-Free World to help keep kids out of the trap that consumed and nearly destroyed his life.

Oliveira and his brother were raised by a single mother. While she always put food on the table, childhood was a meager affair. "I remember going through the garbage in the richest neighborhoods to look for toys for my brother and me," he says.

He began using marijuana at 14. Then his uncle introduced him to cocaine. He would come home at dawn after a weekend of nonstop alcohol and cocaine abuse, and his mother would be waiting up for him. She tried to get through to him about what he was doing with his life. But to no avail.

At first, he confined himself to selling marijuana, but he soon graduated to trafficking cocaine and crack. And because he was selling, he always had access to drugs. He started out using cocaine twice a week, but it rapidly accelerated to a constant activity.

Oliveira began singing gangsta rap. "The songs I wrote spoke about my daily life on the streets and the violence on the outskirts of the city," he says. "I extolled crime and gangs in the lyrics and cursed the police." He and his group began opening major shows. It was a dream come true. With fame came increased police scrutiny, and in 2003, he was arrested and served time for drug trafficking and theft. But if prison was supposed to teach him a lesson, it failed. It was there that he began using crack.

"When I got out of prison, addicted to crack, with no future, and with only the streets to shelter me, I plunged headlong into the wrong things," he says.

As fate would have it, his mother had remarried, and her husband was a police officer. When she finally convinced him to go into rehab, it was her husband, a cop, who paid for it.

"It was the best decision I ever made," he says. "Life teaches you in surprising ways. I learned there are good cops and bad cops."

Olveira still raps. But his songs now focus on staying clean. He uses his music to speak his truth: that crime and drugs are not the way to solve the problems in life. He began visiting schools to share his story and to help kids make the decision to live drug-free.

In 2018, he teamed up with Mundo Sem Drogas, the Brazilian chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, and has used its Truth About Drugs booklets and videos to educate some 40,000 local children.

"My dream is to continue rapping and bringing my story to schools to reach them with the truth about drugs," he says.

Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. Through the support of Scientology Churches and Scientologists, the Foundation offers its drug education resources free of charge to anyone wishing to use them to educate others about drugs. The program is inspired by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who noted the role substance abuse plays in the disintegration of the social fabric. Through his research, he found that "the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs."

The Foundation's Truth About Drugs materials and online drug education courses are available free of charge in 19 languages through the Foundation's website.

Watch the Drug-Free World public service announcements and The Truth About Drugs-Real People, Real Stories documentary on the Scientology Network, and episodes of the network's original series Voices for Humanity to see the program in action. Soberlink Launches ‘Addiction Care is Healthcare’ Campaign in Honor of National Recovery Month

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- In recognition of National Recovery Month this September, Soberlink, the 'Gold Standard' in alcohol monitoring, is proud to announce the launch of its 'Addiction Care is Healthcare' campaign. The initiative seeks to normalize addiction care and firmly establish its place within the larger umbrella of holistic healthcare.

"Soberlink celebrates National Recovery Month by showcasing the parallelism between healthcare and addiction care," reads the campaign's landing page. The company's mission is to break barriers, shift paradigms, and erase stigmas associated with alcohol monitoring and addiction care.

Joshua Cagney, M.A., an Addiction Recovery Professional, emphasized the importance of Soberlink's technology in the recovery journey. "External structures are critical for clients in early recovery from Alcohol Use Disorder. I'm not sure that I've found a better tool to create external structure outside of the treatment environment than Soberlink," said Cagney.

Recent studies underscore the urgency of the campaign's message. Research supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reveals that nearly one-third of adults in the U.S. have experienced Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) at some point in their lives. Alarmingly, only about 20 percent of them seek AUD treatment.

Soberlink's state-of-the-art design and technology provide a modern, discreet user experience, rewriting narratives on alcohol monitoring. "Much like tools in traditional healthcare, such as glucose monitors for diabetes, Soberlink plays a pivotal role in addiction care by fostering connectivity, accountability, and progress tracking," the company stated.

The campaign's landing page, which can be found at https://www.soberlink.com/addiction-care-is-healthcare, offers more insights and resources on the importance of addiction care in the broader healthcare landscape.

For media inquiries or further information about the 'Addiction Care is Healthcare' campaign, please contact Thy-An Tran, Soberlink's Advertising & Marketing Director, at ttran@soberlink.com.

Church of Scientology Reaches Out to Help End the Drug Overdose Crisis

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Just last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced more than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses in the United States during the 12-month period ending April 2021. The Church of Scientology International urges concerned parents, educators and community leaders to take action against the "other pandemic" with drug education and prevention.

The Church is making fact-based drug education materials and courses available free of charge to anyone wishing to help turn around what the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is calling "a national crisis" that "knows no geographical boundaries."

Drawing on five decades in the field of drug education and prevention, the Church of Scientology developed the Truth About Drugs, now one of the world's largest nongovernmental drug information and prevention initiatives. In 2006, Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a secular nonprofit corporation, was formed to serve as the primary distributor of the educational materials and to develop new materials to meet the challenge of continually changing drug trends.

The Foundation today oversees the Truth About Drugs campaign and coordinates an international network of volunteers brought together by their common purpose to create a drug-free world.

The Foundation has grown to a network of thousands of volunteers in more than 200 chapters around the world and partnerships with some 1,800 groups and organizations.

The Scientology Network original series Voices for Humanity documents the kind of change this initiative is accomplishing:

* In San Diego, California, Dr. Beatriz Villarreal uses the initiative to combat drug abuse by educating families on the dangers of drugs.

* In his native Massachusetts and throughout the U.S. Darren Tessitore works with driver's education programs to take action against drug-related accidents, vital with traffic deaths clocking in at 20,160 in the first six months of 2021-18.4 percent higher than last year.

* In New York City, the father and daughter team Dr. Bernard and Meghan Fialkoff have reached thousands of inner city schoolchildren with the Truth About Drugs.

* And from Colombia to Malaysia, South Africa to the Philippines and Kenya to India, drug prevention activists are empowering generations of youth with an initiative that continues to grow exponentially at the grassroots level.

All this to say there is effective action parents, educators and community leaders can take to protect their children, communities and the next generation from drug abuse and addiction. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, "Prevention strategies based on scientific evidence working with families, schools, and communities can ensure that children and youth, especially the most marginalized and poor, grow and stay healthy and safe into adulthood and old age. For every dollar spent on prevention, at least ten can be saved in future health, social and crime costs."

GREENVILLE, S.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- youturn, the world's largest platform of evidence-based and therapist led video content for Stress, Anxiety, and Substance Misuse, announced a partnership with First Sun EAP. Through the partnership, youturn and First Sun will co-market services to help enterprises decrease employee stress and anxiety while increasing resilience and productivity.

The partnership will provide First Sun clients with access to youturn's risk mitigation training content for businesses and the youturn library will supplement First Sun's expansive employee and leader support programs.

youturn's CEO, Shay Houser, said, "First Sun is the leading EAP in the Southeast. Serving over 150,000 lives, we believe our combined efforts can reduce employee Stress, Anxiety, and Depression (SAD) while minimizing the impact of substance misuse inside the enterprise."

According to Maria Lund, First Sun's president and COO, "Our business is designed to grow with the needs of our customers. Offering youturn is a great added-value service that aligns with the how we are helping our customers support their employees through this difficult time."

A New Solution to a Growing Epidemic:

First Sun EAP has witnessed the transformation of mental and emotional assistance for employees for decades and, since the onset of the pandemic, has seen first-hand the impact of the rise in mental illness and decline in well-being. There is clear evidence for the need and value of organizations investing in substantial support for employees around stress, anxiety and depression. Additionally, the national rise in substance misuse is impacting every business.

According to a Gallop Poll, close to half of U.S. adults, 46%, have dealt with substance use problems in their family. And that was pre-COVID-19. Substance Misuse amongst employees has accelerated to epidemic levels. And, the missing link in the well-being of employees, is the impact of loved ones at home who are struggling. This trend is a silent killer of productivity, and more importantly, people.

First Sun and youturn intend to address this crisis by combining youturn's evidence-based educational content with First Sun's extensive clinical and workplace expertise.

"An increasing number of employees struggling with mental health challenges are reaching out to First Sun for help," said Maria Lund. "It is our goal to make our broad array of services accessible to everyone. We can now expand our convenient well-being solutions to include youturn's powerful suite of offerings."

Recovery Expert Slash Coleman To Discuss New Laughter Yoga Addiction Treatment in Webinar to Help Participants Sustain Long-term Sobriety

RICHMOND, Va. /ScoopCloud/ -- Renowned author and US Laughter Ambassador Slash Coleman announced today that he will offer a webinar on a new form of addiction treatment entitled "Redefining Addiction and Recovery Through Laughter Yoga." Hosted by the Master Center for Addiction Medicine, this free webinar will occur on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. ET and is meant for addiction specialists, laughter yoga professionals, and participants struggling with substance and activity addictions.

Coleman will speak about an in-patient recovery program he created at a treatment facility in 2019 aimed at helping those who struggle with addictions to: alcohol, drugs, sex, relationships, spending, gambling, eating, and self-injury. The program, which has been utilized successfully as an initiative with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, has been known to help participants gain independence from addictive behavior by: reducing stress related cravings, boosting resistance to intense urges and building purpose, self-esteem and sober coping strategies.

"I grew up with addiction in my family and know firsthand the pain it causes," Coleman says. "It's gratifying to see how something as simple as laughter can have such a positive impact on something as complex as addiction."

Slash Coleman is best known for his work on stage, in books and on television where he often uses his irreverent humor to create stories related to his family's struggle with addiction. In 2015, after suffering a mysterious lung collapse while on his book tour, his journey back to health led him to India where he studied with Dr. Madan Kataria, the founder of the worldwide laughter yoga movement.

"Using laughter yoga to support multiple treatment paths makes this unique," says Alexa Fong Drubay, Executive Director of Laughter Yoga USA. "Since addiction is a family disease, our network of free laugher clubs around the world allows us to not only focus on individuals struggling with addiction, but provide family members with support, as well."

Enrollment in the webinar is limited and pre-registration is recommended at: https://laughteryogarichmond.com/masterclass.

There is no cost for participants, though a $25 recommended donation for laughter professionals and those who work in a recovery-related field is suggested. For more information visit https://laughteryogarichmond.com/.

Launch Pad Publishing Releases Addiction Recovery Anthology

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Launch Pad Publishing is releasing its first ever anthology, a collection of 18 essays about addiction and recovery from some of the world's top addiction and recovery writers.

"The Addiction Diaries: Stories of Darkness, Hope and All That Falls in Between" (ISBN: 978-1951407278) features stories about a woman trying to save her brother from his gambling addiction, a child heroin user who recovers and finds a calm life, a mother of two addicts who watches them go from jail to freedom and a former bank robber reflecting on nearly two decades of sobriety, among many others.

The collection is equal parts harrowing, heartbreaking and hopeful - a comprehensive work that shows addiction and recovery from every angle, age, socioeconomic level and race.

Author and EMDR expert Dr. Jamie Marich praises "The Addiction Diaries," calling it a "major contribution to the addiction literature canon" and commends it for "bringing a more human face to the public health problem of addiction...and the joys of recovery."

"I'll admit that upon original conception, I wasn't sure we could tell the stories of the wide swath of people who have been impacted by addiction," says editor and publisher Anna David. "And while I'm not saying that we've included every story possible - that would be impossible - the tales these authors tell here are tragic, inspiring, heartbreaking, illuminating...and perhaps most importantly, all unique."

While the opiate crisis rages on - roughly 50,000 people a year die as a result of opiate addiction - an additional 88,000 a year die from alcohol-related causes. Cases of addiction have only risen since March, leading some to call the addiction crisis "the pandemic within the pandemic." But what the headlines don't cover is the hope that comes after recovery. That's where this collection comes in.

Included among the contributors are Colleen Connaughton, Monique Elise, Ryan Hampton, Jessica Lopez, Jennifer Lovely, Patrick O'Neil, Jacq Maren, Emily Redondo, Paul Roux and Lisa Smith.

"The Addiction Diaries" is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, among many other outlets.

Burning Tree Programs Help to Reopen All-Women Facility that Treats Trauma and Addiction in Tandem

DALLAS, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Burning Tree Programs recently helped to re-open a Fredericksburg, Texas, women-only drug and alcohol rehab that closed in January of 2020 - Awakenings Hill Country. Today, it's been renamed the Fullbrook Center and is now part of Burning Tree Programs' effort to ensure ethical treatment that's run by families and not driven by private equity interest. The name change reflects a transition in the philosophy and approach to care in Texas.

The Fullbrook Center is one of the only treatment centers in Texas that treats trauma and substance abuse at the same time. It offers affordable care provided by skilled staff and is one of just a few facilities in the country that is CARF and ASAM accredited. This accreditation demonstrates its commitment to clients to ensure they receive the best care possible.

Burning Tree Programs is helping to support Fullbrook and using its admissions team to find care for women who need it. In turn, the new owners, Jessica and Josh Slay, a husband and wife team, can focus on what they know best - treatment and trauma.

"Opening and focusing on all aspects of a new treatment center is challenging," Jessica says. "Because of Burning Tree, we can solely focus on the best level of care for women suffering from trauma and substance abuse."

Jessica spent her career building a private counseling practice. During that time, she saw many women who had suffered immense trauma while also developing substance use dependency.

"When I looked for places for my clients to get help, I struggled," Jessica says. "Facilities were either unaffordable or did not provide the necessary services."

So, it just made sense to combine the two.

Josh is the former CEO of Brazos Recovery, an all men's drug rehab that offers detox, long-term residential care and sober living. Josh has been sober for 10 years.

"My wife and I combined our passions and expertise of healing trauma and using the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous to help others," Josh says.

About the FullBrook Center

The Fullbrook Center is a clinician-owned and operated residential treatment facility for women, designed to assist women in the healing from substance abuse, mental health and trauma. It's the only boutique facility that is women-only, in-network, ASAM accredited, and specializes in substance abuse and trauma treatment in Texas. It offers tailored, individual care and has 19 beds and six master's level clinicians. There's a 24-hour nursing staff and a full medical detox onsite.

About Burning Tree Programs

Burning Tree Programs is a family-owned company that brings ethical and specialized treatment to people who chronically relapse and who struggle with substance use disorder. The company opened its first treatment center in 1999. Since then it has opened three treatment centers - each with a unique approach to address addiction and alcoholism.

Burning Tree Ranch is designed for long-term treatment, focuses on the 12 steps and uses several modalities. Treatment ranges from eight to 14 months in a residential treatment program and a one-year commitment to an intensive aftercare program is required.

Renewal Lodge, just outside of Austin, Texas, also focuses on the 12 steps and is coupled with the ancient practice of mindfulness which helps to enhance the experience of the 12 steps.

With a 12-step foundation, Burning Tree West in Tucson, AZ also implements positive psychology to help young adults heal in their extended care program and sober living homes.

Matt Adams Foundation for Opioid Recovery Receives $79,000 Cigna Foundation Grant

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. /ScoopCloud/ -- Matt Adams Foundation (MAF), a non-profit bringing innovative change in the field of harm reduction and recovery initiatives in Northwest Arkansas (NWA) is pleased to announce they are the recipients of a $79,000 grant endowed by The Cigna Foundation. The funding will expand Peer Recovery Support and harm reduction services in Arkansas; a state where in the past three years drug deaths have increased by 17%* and during a time when those who struggle with substance use are at a higher risk due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In partnership with Ozark Guidance, the initiative funded through this grant will increase access to Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSS) in NWA for nights, weekends and moments of crisis. PRSS assists persons at high risk of substance use and/or mental health crisis with the navigation of multiple systems such as treatment, housing, transportation, supportive employment, supplemental benefits, and the building and rebuilding of natural supports.

"Peer recovery support is vital for those who are seeking recovery, in recovery and need support after recovery," said Katherine van den Bogert, program manager at the National Safety Council. "Drug overdose is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., but recovery is possible. We are excited that the Matt Adams Foundation has the financial support it needs to ensure people with substance use disorders receive the support they deserve so they can live their fullest lives."

The grant comes at a time when aid for those struggling with substance use is that much more vital, with many being higher risk during the COVID-19 outbreak of not only experiencing complications from the virus, but also of relapsing without their crucial support networks. While it is too early for conclusive data, experts across the field warn that the crisis could reverse recent strides made to combat the opioid epidemic.

On March 24, 2020, Dr. Nora Valkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), wrote: "As people across the U.S. and the rest of the world contend with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the research community should be alert to the possibility that it could hit some populations with substance use disorders (SUDs) particularly hard."

"Cigna is committed to fighting the opioid crisis in our communities, which is why we are so proud to support the important work the Matt Adams Foundation is doing," said Greg Allen, MidSouth market president, Cigna. "The Foundation shares our mission to help Arkansans who are struggling with opioid addiction, and this grant will enable even more people to start their journey to recovery."

Additionally, this project will establish regular naloxone trainings in the community and increase access to MAF's harm reduction program. Since its inception in March of 2019, Matt Adams Foundation for Opioid Recovery has trained and distributed Naloxone opioid overdose reversal kits for over 2,200 community members, including outfitting more than 20 police and fire departments across the region. Over 47 lives have been saved through the program, with many additional unreported positive outcomes. In receiving their largest grant to date, MAF seeks to double these numbers in the coming year.

"This grant is going to be life changing for so many struggling with addiction in NWA. When I was trying to get help and become clean it was hard to find the right resources. There was no one to help me and my family navigate the first days and weeks of this frightening time," states Melissa Cole who is in recovery and now a Marketing and Harm Reduction Specialist at the Matt Adams Foundation. "It would have been instrumental in my recovery to speak to someone who could provide critical direction and give me hope for the future." Cole believes continued care during recovery, especially in the beginning, is essential and this generous grant from Cigna Foundation is going to help provide that to residents in need in NWA.

This partnership with MAF and Ozark Guidance will extend community resources with proven efficacy in our communities.

Libby Bier, Director of Substance Abuse and Recovery Services at Ozark Guidance / Arisa Health says, "We are excited about the opportunities this Cigna grant and MAF partnership offer. Having additional Peer Support Specialists on our team will allow us to reach more people with substance use disorders in our communities. Certified Peer Support Specialists receive formal training and combine that with their personal lived experience."

Adds Bier, "They can offer help and hope in a unique way that marries nicely with our counseling and medication services."

About Matt Adams Foundation

Matt Adams Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit working to combat the opioid epidemic in Northwest Arkansas and beyond. With a focus on prevention through education, life-saving harm reduction programs and improving access to, and effectiveness of, treatment for those seeking recovery, MAF has been recognized for innovative approaches and bringing positive change to the community. The Matt Adams Foundation was awarded the 2019 Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce's Non-Profit of the Year.

African Youth Drug Prevention (AYDP) Project Presents Substance Abuse Impact Data in Washington State

SEATTLE, Wash. /ScoopCloud/ -- On April 25 from 1 to 3 p.m., Union of Tigrean Women North America Seattle Chapter, a charitable non-profit organization supporting socio-cultural and educational causes of Ethiopians, invites the community to attend the African Youth Drug Prevention presentation of findings. The presentation will take place at the Washington State Coalition of African Community Leaders (WSCACL) quarterly meeting via Zoom.

The African Youth Drug Prevention (AYDP) team will present their neighborhood findings on the influence of substance abuse shops and advertisements as it relates to youth behavior and health.

Sponsored by WSCACL, the AYDP project demonstrates how two different African communities committed to protecting their youth can successfully collaborate to combat a common issue. The project has received support from Public Health Seattle and King County and was formed by a Coalition member partnership between the Union of Tigrean Women North America Seattle Chapter and the Rescue Mission and Prayer Network International.

Information presented will showcase how targeted youth are impacted by billions of advertising dollars and how youth of color disproportionately face negative consequences for their substance use, even though their consumption is often comparable or even lower than white youth.

Meeting participants can log into the Zoom meeting with ID: 614-712-9422 and password: 520716. Past meeting attendees have included: King County Councilmember, Girmay Zahilay; Seattle City Councilmember, Kshama Sawant; and former State Representative and current WSCACL Advisor, Dawn Mason.

About WSCACL

Founded in 2016 by a handful of African community leaders, WSCACL has grown to a Coalition membership of more than 100 leaders, individuals and business owners. It supports African Community organizations and individuals in Washington state committed to sharing resources and promoting collaboration across communities.

WSCACL assists in fostering leadership development, capacity building, community advocacy, training and education, economic empowerment and civic engagement. It receives generous support from the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, Tacoma Urban League, Washington Nonprofits Association, Seattle Foundation, Neighborhood Matching Fund, Center for Multicultural Health, HealthPoint and the Seattle Foundation.
