Surviving the Outback Recreates Epic Challenge of Survival on Documentary Showcase

"Surviving the Outback" is inspired by the true story of two German aviators who, in 1932, became stranded deep in the Australian Outback and survived a remarkable 43 days before being rescued by Aboriginal locals. Using the original chronicle of the events as told by one of the pilots in his book "Flight Into Hell," this feature-length documentary captures the stunning beauty and majesty of nature as the filmmaker attempts to recreate the aviators' plight in the ultimate test of survival.

Michael Atkinson used handheld cameras and drones to entirely self-film his endeavor into the unforgiving Australian Outback. With no back-up crew or two-way communication with the outside world, Michael uses only the materials available to the original pilots and his skills as a survival instructor to live off the land as he retraces their original route through rough seas, forbidding terrain and crocodile-infested waters.

ABOUT MICHAEL ATKINSON

Michael Atkinson was struck when he was a child with a passion for filming his experiences in the extreme outdoors. He became a full-time military pilot for the Australian Defense Force and flew everything from helicopters to fighter jets. He also taught survival skills to pilots in northern Australia. "Surviving the Outback" is his first feature-length documentary.

In an interview with Scientology Network for DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE, Michael reflected on his mission:

The Los Angeles Police Department and the Church of Scientology win the National Faith and Blue Weekend contest, illustrating how much can be accomplished when law enforcement and the community work together

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The LAPD and the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles have won the National Faith and Blue Weekend Photo Contest for the "confidence, purpose and togetherness of the volunteers" shown in the massive Faith and Blue Weekend cleanup. Faith and Blue is a grass-roots initiative that seeks to create "safer, stronger, more just and unified communities" through "partnerships among law enforcement professionals, residents, businesses and community groups through the connections of local faith-based organizations."

Cosponsored by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles and the Hollywood Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, Faith and Blue Weekend in Hollywood bought together 50 community partners to clean and beautify the neighborhood.

Under the banner "Unity in the Community," more than 460 volunteers cleaned 170 city blocks, washed 200 storefronts and beautified some 1,300 square feet of spaces with a graffiti paint-out.

Among the 50 organizations that came together in support of this initiative were the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Hollywood Partnership, the L.A. Office of Community Beautification, the L.A. Department of Sanitation, and numerous local businesses and faith-based organizations.

Restaurants including Shakey's and Pink's Hotdogs set up tables of snacks and drinks for the volunteers. Home Depot and GarboGrabber brought supplies. A mariachi band entertained the crowd gathered in the parking lot of Hollywood's iconic Capitol Records Building. And the volunteers provided the muscle.

Delighted with the turnout, the LAPD Hollywood Captain thanked the Church of Scientology for its commitment to making Hollywood "a safer and cleaner place."

Faith and Blue founder Rev. Markel Hutchins, who arrived in Los Angeles from Atlanta, Georgia, to launch the city's Faith and Blue Weekend celebrations, was equally enthusiastic about the turnout, because when faiths, communities and law enforcement work together, they can bridge differences, increase collaboration and reduce bias and violence.

The Church of Scientology, LAPD and The Way to Happiness Foundation have partnered in monthly neighborhood cleanups since 2018, including a special annual scouring of Hollywood Boulevard on the eve of each year's Hollywood Christmas Parade.

After each cleanup, volunteers hand out copies of The Way to Happiness, written by humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. The Way to Happiness is a common-sense nonreligious moral code with 21 precepts to guide people to make better choices in their lives. By sharing The Way to Happiness with local businesses, volunteers provide them with a tool to promote values and contribute to a cleaner and more ethical community.

Providing Help in Turkey to the Survivors of the February 6 Earthquake

ANTAKYA, Turkey /ScoopCloud/ -- A team of Scientologists who are disaster response specialists from Pakistan has now joined volunteers from the Scientology Center of Tel Aviv and other emergency response-trained responders who are providing relief in Turkey.

It is estimated the earthquake killed 6,000 in Syria and 46,000 in Turkey. And hundreds of thousands have been left homeless. UNICEF describes the needs as "huge," stating "continued support is vital."

As aid pours into Turkey, the Scientology volunteers are primarily focused on seeing that supplies get into the hands of those most in need.

"We arrived in a village and came across a family of 20 living in tents pitched outside their home that was destroyed by the earthquake," says one of the volunteers. "They had no supplies left." The volunteers left them with food kits, each containing 45 pounds of food-enough to hold them over for several weeks.

The volunteers are providing any help that is needed but are primarily distributing food, water, winter clothing, bedding and sanitary supplies.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers headquarters in Los Angeles has put out a call for experienced disaster response specialists who can join them in providing help. Praying and Riding for Peace Through the Streets of South Los Angeles

Their decisions can go either way. And The Way to Happiness can help them choose peace and a better life for their families and the entire community.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers: Helping One Person Can Change the World

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa /ScoopCloud/ -- Growing up in Mitchel Plain wasn't easy, according to Luce-Lynn Fondling, a life skills coach and Scientology Volunteer Minister who works with community leaders, educators and both bullies and victims in schools. Drug dealers dominate her neighborhood. "There is violence everywhere," she says.

Mitchel Plain was built in the 1970s for people forcibly removed by the apartheid South African government from areas set aside for "whites only." It is notorious for gang violence, substance abuse and poverty.

"I was always fighting," she says in a video on the Volunteer Ministers South Africa YouTube channel. "I was always in fights. I was always, 'you can't tell me anything.'"

Then she met a Scientology volunteer and what the volunteer told Luce seemed to make sense.

"How do you know all these things?" Luce asked her, and the volunteer introduced her to the Tools for Life-a series of 19 free online courses.

"When I did the courses, I become a different person," says Luce. "I know that I've changed because when people attack me, I'm like 'Hold on. I'm not that Luce anymore.' And then they will approach me and say, 'Look here, what happened to you? Why are you so changed?' And then I share the 19 Tools."

Working in coordination with Scientology Volunteer Ministers African headquarters at Castle Kyalami in Johannesburg, Luce delivers seminars to community leaders to empower them so they know what to do.

A community activist who took part in the training says Luce's Tools for Life seminars are "equipping those in my community so we can create a positive ripple effect. The goal is to break the cycle of poverty."

"Sometimes children are acting out, but you don't know why they are acting out," says the principal of an early childhood development center who attended Luce's seminar. "Their parents might be on drugs or they're using alcohol .... The Tools show us how to deal with these people."

"It was a blessing for me to be part of this," says an intern assistant at the same center.

"For me, change is possible," says a ward committee member who completed the 19 courses. "It just depends on what I utilize [from these courses]."

Luce says, "these Tools for Life really changed my life because I am now able to create the change I want to see around me without waiting for anyone. I can see it made a difference in my life. And I'm sure it's going to make a difference in everybody's life."

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard developed the Tools for Life for the training of Scientology Volunteer Ministers, which is a religious social service sponsored by the Church of Scientology International.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Year in Review: Disaster Response Teams Reach Out With Help

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- For more than 40 years, Scientology Volunteer Ministers have responded to natural and manmade disasters. And this year was no exception. The year had no sooner started than a massive mudslide devastated Quito, Ecuador. The worst downpour in nearly two decades unleashed a torrent of water, mud, rock and debris that toppled houses, swept away motorcycles and cars, and left thousands stranded. Scientology Volunteer Ministers helped with the cleanup and provided supplies to those in need.

Volunteer Ministers responded to the refugee crisis in Eastern Europe, with more than 17 million fleeing Ukraine, most of them taking refuge in nearby countries. Working in coordination with aid organizations, volunteers from across Europe including Italy, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia and Germany raised donations and collected and transported urgently needed supplies, provided transportation to temporary quarters, worked at distribution points and manned shelters.

More than 3,000 miles away in Pakistan, Volunteer Ministers mobilized to respond to catastrophic floods that left a third of the country submerged. Thousands were stranded without access to first aid or needed medical care. To help remedy this, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers organized teams of doctors and nurses who traveled to remote regions and provided care. They also brought food, water and other emergency supplies.

More than 700 Volunteer Ministers responded to the devastation of the 150-mph winds and 13-foot storm surge of Hurricane Ian. Teams cut down damaged trees, providing access to communities cut off by the storm's destruction, helped locate valuables, shored up and protected homes and worked on the arduous muck out and cleanup of homes that could be salvaged. Others manned temporary shelters, and organized and distributed water, food, hygiene and baby supplies, and other urgently needed items.

Wherever they go, Volunteer Ministers care for the emotional and spiritual needs of the victims. They help them prevail over loss and grief, regroup, and confront the future. In 2023, Can the Scientology Tools for Life Help Resolve Religious Conflict?

GAUTENG, South Africa /ScoopCloud/ -- When Rev. Shadrack Lekoana of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa studied the Scientology Tools for Life courses, they rehabilitated his purpose and empowered him to accomplish it. Lekoana teamed up with the Church of Scientology to use these tools to end conflicts and competition among religions, which only distract religious leaders from their true vocation.

"It is a tragedy to see what society has become under our neglect," he told 100 religious leaders of a broad range of faiths attending his seminar at Kyalami Castle in Gauteng, African headquarters for the Scientology religion and its humanitarian outreach programs.

"Most of the time we are too focused on membership and proving who is right and who is wrong," said Lekoana. "So much so that we have neglected our duties in the community. Religious unity can be more than a dream. We are all gathered here to be empowered with skills to help our communities. So let us learn with the purpose of helping our people."

What followed was a day of training on skills including conflict management, communication, how to tackle drug abuse, and tools to enable students to apply what they learn and translate their education into success in life. These skills and many more are included in the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Tools for Life Skills Development Program.

Mr. Ditle, an elder and member of the Church Council of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa was amazed at what he learned in a single day. "Our churches today lack strong leaders. And for a long time, I have asked myself why this is," he said. "Today I got my answer. They sometimes lack the practical knowledge to handle social situations so they don't know what to do. But they do have the passion to help."

No less enthusiastic was Bishop Mnisi, National Deputy Secretary of the South African Christian Ministers Council.

"The Tools for Life have the potential to change my community," he said. Apart from being active in the church, Mnisi also runs a nonprofit that works with local youth and he is eager to use these new skills in his outreach activities.

Mnisi spoke of the many problems today's youth face. "We all know them: Unemployment, drugs, crime, hopelessness." He has been discouraged by the lack of effective programs. But Scientology Tools for Life training unlocked the riddle of why there is so little improvement in social conditions despite the commitment of so many to improve young people's lives. "Nobody can handle the underlying cause of all these problems: the mindset," he said. And it was with great relief that he realized, "This program can."

"We may be from different faiths," said Sandile Hlayisi, chair of the South African Scientology Volunteer Ministers, who conducted these training sessions. "But we all are affected by the same societal issues. It is vital that we focus on how we are going to work together to assist in solving the high crime rate, gender-based violence, substance abuse, and many other problems that have plagued our country for far too long now. We can't waste time arguing with each other. We have much work to do."

To date, Rev. Lekoana has brought together more than 3,000 leaders from different churches and denominations throughout South Africa to train them on the Scientology Tools for Life Skills Development Program.

"It is such an honor to see all of us getting along," he said at the end of the day's training. "Working together is far more beneficial than working against each other. Now it is time to equip ourselves with knowledge so we can bring life back into our communities."

The gifts were the product of a month-long toy drive launched at the Holiday Lighting Ceremony at the Church November 19, when Jeff Zarrinnam, Chair of the Hollywood Sign Trust, Marine Kalamdaryan from the L.A. Community Alliance, and the Los Angeles Deputy Fire Chief Richard Fields donated the first presents.

"The past several years have presented great challenges to Los Angeles families," said Susanna Kaneer, public affairs director for the Scientology Churches of Greater Los Angeles. Recent data compiled by the University of Southern California shows that while food insecurity leveled off in L.A. County in 2021 after spiking at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in 2022. "Families who are having difficulty putting food on the table are more challenged than ever to provide gifts for their children, and we wanted to help ensure local children have the best Christmas ever this year," said Kaneer.

And thanks to the many volunteers and community partners who donated dolls, stuffed animals and games, and raised funds and purchased presents, youth attending the fun day went home with some 4,500 gifts.

All are invited to join the Church for the next family fun day January 1, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., when L. Ron Hubbard Way will be transformed into a Winter Festival with a snow chute, ice skating, a trackless choo-choo train and free gifts for all children age 10 and under.

And the Code of a Scientologist includes the commitment "To support true humanitarian endeavors in the fields of human rights."

In the preamble to the UDHR, the United Nations called upon all member countries to publicize its text and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

Creating a world where human rights are known and protected starts with effective educational programs that reach across all cultural and geographic boundaries.

United for Human Rights and its program for young people, Youth for Human Rights International are dedicated to this task.

These campaigns make the articles of the UDHR easy to understand and apply to one's life with materials that bring each of the 30 human rights to life. Youth for Human Rights has a free online course for children. And United for Human Rights has a free online course for high school and university students.

Scientology Churches hold seminars, conferences and open house events to raise awareness of the UDHR and engage their communities in programs to promote its full implementation.

Meet a Scientologist Who Brings Christmas Magic to Downtown Clearwater

Help and Empowerment: The Scientology Volunteer Ministers of South Africa

Sandile Hlayisi, chairperson of the South African Scientology Volunteer Ministers, who conducted these training sessions, spoke to the graduates about the new skills they have gained and that they now have the potential of fulfilling the mandate of the late Nelson Mandela. "Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom."

His views were echoed by graduates.

"They have equipped us with the tools to be councilors for our people," said Rev. Phampha William Ramodike, a deputy principal from Limpopo. "They have given us the tools to get our kids off drugs. They have given us the tools to solve conflicts, mend marriages and restore hope to our country. All of us in this auditorium are now capable of great deeds and we will achieve them by applying what we learned."

A community development leader from the City of Tshwane said, "I am so proud to be part of this program. It has really impacted me and my way of operating."

A senior executive from Family Tree Holdings, a black-owned and managed investment holdings company, spoke of the profound change this program had on her outlook. "It taught me to be selfless and do all I can to help society because it is the right thing to do."

But the value of any tool is in its use. And this is demonstrated by the successful application by graduates of the Volunteer Ministers program.

Family Fun at the Holiday Lights Festival at the Church of Scientology

The annual Holiday Lights Festival included a special appearance of Santa and his elves. As is his custom in Hollywood, Santa arrived in a yellow mustang. This year he brought with him kids from Inner-City Shakespeare, who entertained the crowd by singing "All I Want for Christmas" and dancing to "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

The young performers were each presented with a Teddy bear and then joined Santa on the red carpet, where they helped him flip the switch, illuminating two city blocks of magical holiday lights.

The deputy fire chief inaugurated the L.A. Alliance's annual toy drive. He stressed how rewarding it is to give back during the holidays and that the Church of Scientology embodies this now and throughout the year with its community functions. Drop off a new gift at the toy drive station at the Church of Scientology at 4810 Sunset Blvd. and help ensure a Merry Christmas for underserved children in the community.

In preparation for the annual Winter Street Fair on L. Ron Hubbard Way, the North Pole was installed, including the kid-sized ice-skating rink and snow slides. From 3 p.m. on, children skated and played in the snow, had their faces painted, and posed for selfies with Santa.

Mr. Jeff Zarinam, board member of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Board of Trustees for the Hollywood Sign, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2023, presented the Church with a certificate of recognition:

Scientology Assist Team Brings Help to Their Country in Its Time of Need

KARACHI, Pakistan /ScoopCloud/ -- In a country as prone to cataclysm and disaster as Pakistan, some might say there is not much you can count on except bad news. But Perwaiz Hasan and the Scientology Assist Team are the exception to that rule.

The team has been providing relief in the wake of disasters for more than a decade and responded immediately to this year's floods that left a third of the country under water.

They have visited towns rarely mentioned in Western news: In Bhittai and Qasimabad, they brought food and clothing to some 500 people stranded by the flood. They brought relief to the towns of Zhob, Dadu, and Dera Ismail Khan. They have traveled across the provinces of Punjab and Sindh.

"We really felt honored to visit the most neglected province, Baluchistan," said Perwaiz Hasan, who leads Pakistan's Scientology Assist Team. The team was warned that the area was unsafe. "But it wasn't true," said Hasan. "The people in that area were very friendly and welcoming, and they were really happy we came."

With flooding comes a host of medical complications.

"Standing water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, which are currently spreading malaria and dengue fever in Pakistan," said Richard Brennan, regional emergency director for the eastern Mediterranean region at the World Health Organization. "Respiratory illnesses are rampant. And toxic floodwaters have caused skin infections and scabies."

The Scientology Assist Team includes a corps of medical doctors and nurses who provide medical camps to care for those in need.

After addressing immediate physical needs, the Pakistan Volunteer Assist Team provides Scientology assists-techniques developed by humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that address the emotional and spiritual factors in stress and trauma. And they share the Scientology Tools for Life, a series of online films and courses that provide skills to help people overcome difficulties and better their circumstances.

For more than a decade, Perwaiz Hasan and his team have been responding to disasters in Pakistan including monsoon-driven floods and the 7.5 earthquake of 2015. His team members have also deployed to disasters abroad, including the Nepal earthquake of 2015 and a tsunami and volcano in Jakarta in 2018.

In 2012, the International Association of Scientologists awarded Hasan the Freedom Medal, presented to Scientologists for stellar accomplishments in forwarding the dignity and freedom of all humankind, thus furthering the Church's humanitarian objectives.

Honoring a Scientology Volunteer Minister Who is Changing the Face of Uganda

WANGA PARISH, Uganda /ScoopCloud/ -- International Volunteer Day December 5 was set aside by the United Nations to celebrate positive change through volunteerism. And a stellar example of the change a team of volunteers can achieve is the work of the Volunteer Ministers of Wanga Parish, Uganda, says the Church of Scientology International.

Martin Wamatsu had a dream: to transform Wanga Parish, the village of his birth, from a community struggling in poverty to one that is self-sustaining and providing a decent future for all who live there.

When he was introduced to the Scientology Volunteer Ministers' Tools for Life Courses online, he realized this was the technology he needed to turn his dream into reality. Understanding the basics of communication, organization and planning, he now knew how to set goals and accomplish them. Wamatsu and his family returned to the village, met with village elders, and gained their agreement to carry out a series of programs to achieve this goal.

Wamatsu reached out to a Scientologist over the internet who was as excited about his ideas and plans as he was, and she took on raising funds for the project.

As a school principal, one of Wamatsu's first projects was to provide a future for 70 destitute village orphans. He and his team opened an orphanage, and these children are now all in school. The children now have the energy to learn and take part in orphanage projects. And once the children harvest their first crop of sweet potatoes and rice, the orphanage will be self-sustaining.

Another 25 destitute village children have received the same kind of help and have joined their orphaned friends in school. Funds are nearly in place for the remaining 45 village children to also join them at the school, which will accomplish one of Wamatsu's goals: universal education for all village children.

During the 84-week COVID lockdown in Uganda, most people had to resort to eating their seeds to survive. With the help of his online patron, Wamatsu has now seen to the purchase of seeds, and the village has planted 15 acres of rice, and fields of sweet potatoes and cassava. Once these harvests are gathered, they will have enough to feed the village, plant for the next season and sell or trade produce to nearby villages.

The village and six other villages nearby now have pure, clean drinking water. And they are raising funds to open a medical clinic with a nurse who is also a trained Scientology Volunteer Minister.

Wamatsu has trained his entire village and the leaders of 24 nearby villages on the Scientology Tools for Life. And they used these tools to organize themselves to work as a team to accomplish targets. They are well on their way to making Wanga a sustainable village that can serve as a model where nearby leaders can gain practical experience and return to their villages to create a sustainable region and beyond.

Scientology Churches Organize Volunteers to Clean Up the Hollywood Christmas Parade Route

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Scientology Churches in Los Angeles organize their annual parade route cleanup to make Hollywood shine for the thousands of visitors expected to line the streets of Hollywood for the 90th annual Christmas Parade. Anyone wishing to help make the parade special for paradegoers and those watching on TV is invited to join a team of energetic Angelenos Saturday, November 26, who will be making Hollywood beautiful while having a lot of fun.

Each year, Los Angeles Scientologists organize this pre-parade cleanup. But this year's promises to be unique. Not only will they be making Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards litter-free, they will also be upgrading the parade route by cleaning windows and painting out graffiti. And to help everyone join in the holiday spirit, a team of carolers has promised to come along.

Volunteers should arrive at 9 a.m. at the Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE) at 7065 Hollywood Blvd at 9 a.m., for complimentary coffee and donuts, and to collect their supplies. After the cleanup, they return at noon for pizza and sandwiches provided by local businesses that support the initiative.

The cleanup is cosponsored by The Way to Happiness Foundation, named for author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard's common-sense moral code. The Way to Happiness promotes universal values adopted by millions of people of all faiths around the world. Among the 21 precepts are two particularly appropriate for such a project: Set a Good Example, and Safeguard and Improve Your Environment, which points out:

"Care of the planet begins in one's own front yard. It extends through the area one travels to get to school or work. It covers such places as where one picnics or goes on vacation. The litter which messes up the terrain and water supply, the dead brush which invites fire, these are things one need not contribute to and which, in otherwise idle moments, one can do something about."

Not only does a cleanup raise the pride of those living and working in a neighborhood, it has also been found to be a deterrent to crime. According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania and other institutions, "neighborhoods where vacant lots were cleaned up experienced a 29 percent reduction in gun violence, 22 percent decrease in burglaries, and 30 percent drop in nuisances like noise complaints and illegal dumping.

"Residents living near those same spaces also reported feeling much safer post-remediation, with 58 percent having fewer security concerns when leaving their homes and more than three-quarters saying they significantly increased use of their outside spaces for relaxing and socializing."

Hollywood cleanup volunteers hand out copies of The Way to Happiness after the cleanup and place them in shops for their customers to promote simple, common-sense values anyone may use to make their neighborhood safer and more welcoming.

In addition to the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade activity, a partnership between the Church of Scientology, The Way to Happiness Foundation and the Los Angeles Police Department carries out monthly cleanups to keep Hollywood beautiful. The Los Angeles Churches of Scientology also helped organize the Faith and Blue neighborhood cleanup in October 2022, where more than 50 local businesses, nonprofits and faith-based organizations and some 460 volunteers cleaned 170 city blocks and beautified 200 storefronts under the banner "Unity in the Community."

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The family fun begins on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022, when Santa touches down in East Hollywood at the Church of Scientology on L. Ron Hubbard Way. No matter what weather Los Angeles meteorologists predict next weekend, snow will be falling in East Hollywood when community leaders flip the switch on two blocks of holiday lights.

Local families can count on a traditional holiday celebration with all the trimmings. The fun begins at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 19, and continues until 9 p.m.

Volunteers contributed more than 200 hours to make the lighting festival a memorable experience for East Hollywood families, in keeping with their campaign to "Keep Hollywood Beautiful."

Bring the entire family to welcome Santa and enjoy the complimentary hot cocoa, cookie decorating, and lots of other winter fun.

The festival also launches the Church of Scientology Los Angeles's annual Winter Street Fair. L. Ron Hubbard Way will be transformed into a wonderland, with ice skating and snow slides for the kids. There will be music, food, holiday treats and photos with Santa throughout the holiday season.
