ViewTech Borescopes 2nd Quarter Sales Begin with New VJ-3 Video Borescope Clients

GreenShield finish can be a barrier to virus spread

Startup Atmos Home Shifts Gears with Invention to Help Solve Ventilator Shortage

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Tampa Bay startup developing smart home control systems, Atmos Home, has now shifted gears to produce a new type of ventilator to address the nationwide ventilator shortage due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Atmos Home is leading an effort involving scientists and healthcare experts to produce a ventilator to help meet the continuing surge of respiratory cases as a result of the coronavirus. This new type of ventilator is built around automated compression of a bag valve mask.

Normally a smart home equipment developer, Atmos Home has the credential of developing the world's first smart home hub that combines all major home automation control protocols combined with touch, voice, gesture, and app controls.

The company's founder, Mark Lyle, has previously developed solutions for NASA and other wireless infrastructure providers. With its primary business sidelined because of the coronavirus pandemic, Atmos Home has utilized its skills and components to deliver a game-changer for medical professionals treating patients with COVID-19.

The innovative endeavor from Atmos Home involved re-tooling to create an automated version of a bag valve mask. These bulbous face masks are used as breathing apparatuses, normally squeezed manually by caregivers in order to help patients keep breathing. Atmos Home's concept was to eliminate manual operation and design a machine to actuate the air bag automatically, pushing air into a patient's lungs.

"I think we are injecting some reliability into the mix," Lyle said. "Plus, the complexity to be able to adjust those critical factors like breaths per minute, inhalation exhalation ratio... and so forth that some of the other projects might not be addressing."

Atmos Home is collaborating on the project with scientists, engineers, and doctors from around the globe and plans to open source the designs for its solution. It has been observed that many early stage patients that only require minimal amount of breathing assistance are currently occupying ventilators. According to the project team, their new innovation can be used by these patients.

"Now you have freed up a nurse or an EMT, and potentially freed up a ventilation machine, so absolutely the goal is to avoid the situation that we're in today," Lyle said.

Having already created the prototype, Atmos Home informs that the cost to manufacture its new ventilation device will be less than a tenth of the price of a full-blown ventilator and it can be manufactured from readily available components. Inked Gaming Donates 15,000 Masks to Hospitals, First Responders

CORVALLIS, Ore. /ScoopCloud/ -- When healthcare workers around Oregon started asking for hand-sewn mask donations, Oregon-based gaming supplies company, Inked Gaming, answered the call. It quickly set its sewing team into action to create more than 15,000 face masks that will be donated to hospitals and first responders suffering from the state's personal protective equipment (PPE) shortage.

"I had two seamstresses who didn't have much work to do, so I thought we could help out and use our time and resources to give back," Thomas Pool, CEO, Inked Gaming, says. "We're donating these face masks to local hospitals, veterinary clinics, nursing homes, fire stations, delivery drivers and more."

While hand-sewn cloth masks do not offer the same protection as N95 and surgical masks, the CDC website on the Coronavirus states, "In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort." As a small, locally-owned company, Inked Gaming needed help funding the supplies, so for every face mask or face shield purchased on the company's website, Inked Gaming pledged to donate 19 additional masks.

"I never anticipated the amount of support we'd receive," Pool says.

Inked Gaming received enough orders to create more than their initial end goal of 10,000 face masks for donation in less than four days.

"We figured we would sell enough to keep our employees busy for the next couple months. We didn't expect to sell 500 through the weekend," Pool says. "We were amazed by the response and by how so many people were willing and wanting to help."

After so many were sold, the company was now faced with a decision of whether to shut down the operation or to lower the number.

"At 10,000 donated masks, we knew that if we kept up at the same pace, we would be putting ourselves in a position where we couldn't fulfill our promises," Pool explains. "After talking with the team, we decided that lowering the donation level, but staying with the cause would be best."

To account for this, Inked Gaming changed their pledge to donating an additional four masks for every one mask sold.

On Friday, April 3, President Donald Trump announced the recommendation that Americans should wear non-medical cloth face masks when in public. With these new guidelines, Inked Gaming reports seeing another significant increase in orders. Its team of two seamstresses is working hard to keep up with the number of masks to be sewn, while following all CDC and Oregon safety guidelines regarding COVID-19.

"We've had several local requests to help sew the donation masks too. Right now, that's the most helpful," Pool says. "We're wanting to get them out as soon as we can and the community's support has been so uplifting."

The company has also located a surgical mask supplier which will allow them to supplement some of its donations with higher quality masks, and reduce some of the strain on the small sewing team.

South Central Iowa Community Steps Up to Support Senior Care Center

Asking for donations or additional support from the manufacturing industry, Bill Trickey, Executive Director of the CCDC and Destiny Boeve, Administrator for Southern Hills were able to collect a generous supply of masks as well as some other essential items.

Altec's Osceola body plant was instrumental in donations, providing 3,000 latex gloves for the facility. And SIMCO Drilling Equipment, Inc, donated a surplus of high-grade masks and gloves as soon as the call was made.

"Having been part of the Osceola and Clarke County community for decades, we simply wanted to help wherever we could," said Darren Swolley, General Manager at SIMCO. "These are the times when community means more than ever."

Other local businesses, including Cathy's Auto Body and Cactus Farms, were also quick to join in the roundup of supplies. The team at Boyt Harness donated thousands of masks from their Missouri plant to hospitals and facilities in need there.

"This is what makes my job such a pleasure," said Trickey. "When the community is in need, our business network knows how to deliver."

Southern Hills staff members, residents, family members and friends alike have joined together to help with the cause, sewing from mask templates for residents and staffers to use while other donation efforts are in the works. Boeve's own grandmother, Kathy Klein sewed 100 masks for the staff and is working on washable gowns for the program. Southern Hills staffer and CNA, Amy Allen brought her seamstress talents back in her off hours just to help with the production as well.

With the influx of masks and gloves, the need for other safety materials has become a priority. Materials for sewing additional masks as well as gowns and other PPEs are still needed to help the staff properly care for the residents.

"We couldn't be more blessed," said Boeve. "Our community really knows how to come together in a time of crisis."

Boeve went on to stress the need for basic sewing materials like needles and thread for additional masks for mending gowns. And the donation of more N95 masks, gowns, or PPEs remains on the priority list for the foreseeable future.

The circuit then "virtually" builds itself with dimensions and alignment defined in the first imprint layer.
