In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) [*1] estimates that about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year are radon related and in Canada that number stands at approximately 3,000.

Radon, a dangerous gas, is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and radioactive. It is formed by the breakdown of uranium, a natural radioactive material found in soil, rock, and groundwater.

According to the U.S. Department of Urban Development (HUD), Radon is measured in picoCuries per liter of air (pCi/L). Radon levels inside houses below 4 pCi/L are considered acceptable. If your home has radon levels above 4 pCi/L, you should act.
Radon testing will always be a service that a home buyer would need to request separately from a home inspection company.
A 48-hour test conducted by a home inspection professional will always be more accurate. If a home is found to have elevated levels, seal the foundation and all access points such as plumbing, small cracks and mortar joints with crack sealants.
Mechanical ventilation will be the next step. An HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilation) system will introduce exterior air into the building envelope and pressurize it.
Cover the earth floor in crawl spaces with a high-density plastic sheet. A vent pipe and fan can be used to blow the radon from under the sheet and vent it to the outdoors.
The EPA suggests radon testing every two years.
Certain geographic areas are more prone than others. Mountainous and/or rocky areas have the highest concentrations. Older homes with a brick or stone foundation are suspectable to radon.

California Parents, Guardians, and Teachers: Opt-In for School Pesticide Notifications

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Aug. 18, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — California Safe Schools, a nonprofit dedicated to children’s environmental health and safety, reminds parents, guardians, teachers and school staff at all California K-12 public schools and child care centers to file the Right to Know Pesticide Use Notification form at the start of the school year. This form is mandated under California legislation, The Healthy Schools Act.

Filing this form with your school office ensures you receive advance notification of any pesticide applications in or around the school site. It is a critical safeguard and part of each school’s commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.

Under The Healthy Schools Act, a “schoolsite” is defined as:

Any facility used for public day care, kindergarten, elementary, or secondary school purposes. The term includes the buildings or structures, playgrounds, athletic fields, school vehicles, or any other area of school property visited or used by pupils. “Schoolsite” does not include postsecondary educational facilities attended by secondary pupils or private day care or school facilities.

The Right to Know Notification requires schools to provide at least 72 hours’ advance notice before any pesticide application on a campus.

Emergency Applications: In rare cases when pesticides must be used immediately to address a health or safety emergency, schools may apply them without the standard 72-hour advance notice. However, The Healthy Schools Act requires that the school district designee make every effort to provide the required notification even under emergency conditions.

Filing the Right to Know Pesticide Use Notification with your school’s Main Office ensures you will receive alerts before applications occur. This allows parents, guardians or teachers to make informed decisions on application days. Importantly, notification can be requested for any reason, not solely for known health concerns.

HISTORY

The Right to Know Pesticide Use Notification program began with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) groundbreaking Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Policy in 1999. This policy embraces the Precautionary Principle – the idea that if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or environment, precautionary measures should be taken even without conclusive scientific evidence. As part of this approach, LAUSD has not used Roundup for more than 20 years, setting an important precedent in protecting children’s health. The success of the LAUSD IPM policy led directly to the passage of The California Healthy Schools Act of 2000.

California Safe Schools Celebrates its 25th Anniversary Honoring Environmental Health Heroes!

California Safe Schools Honors 2021 Earth Day Champions

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- March 30, 2021 marked the 23rd anniversary of California Safe Schools (CSS), a celebrated children's environmental health and justice coalition, founded by Robina Suwol in 1998 after grade school students, including Robina's two sons, were sprayed with the herbicide Princep, as they headed to class.

A school gardener in a hazardous materials suit, employed by LA Unified School District, unaware students were present, sprayed the herbicide creating a cloud of pesticide mist students were forced to walk through to reach their classrooms. Several parents who had dropped off their children at the school were alarmed to witness this event. Robina's youngest son, Nicholas, whose asthma had been under control, experienced a severe asthma attack after the incident.

Robina and CSS sprang into action, contacting the school district, experts in the area, teachers and other parents - leading the effort to ensure incidents like this would not happen again. And, one year to the date Nicholas became ill, CSS and LAUSD enacted the most stringent pesticide policy in the nation for schools. The policy was the first in the United States to embrace the Precautionary Principle and Parents Right to Know regarding pesticides in schools.

The success of the policy led to California legislation, The Healthy Schools Act 2000, and AB 405 spearheaded by Suwol and CSS, which prevents experimental pesticides whose health effects are unknown from being used in all K-12 California schools. As a result, 6 million students, hundreds of thousands of teachers and school employees are protected.

For 23 years LA Unified has not used Roundup, or any herbicides, on the grounds of any schools in a district spanning 28 cities, 703 square miles and 1000 sites.

Mark Abramowitz is entering his 41st year of air quality work in California. In his early days, Mark was tagged by the L.A. Weekly with the moniker "Mr. Clean Air". Since he was 10-years old, founder and chief engineer of Forensics Detectors, Dr. Koz, had an interest in electronic systems. He studied electronic engineering in college and was invited to become a technical member of the graduate Sensor Technology Laboratory at RMIT University. During his tenure, he designed and developed smoke analyzers, infra-red gas and toxic gas sensors and interlock systems. He continued to invent many sensors and systems during his Ph.D. studies until his next breakthrough - the world's first vehicle carbon monoxide sensor system to prevent driver fatigue and suicides.

During his doctoral studies, he traveled around the world three times presenting his inventions and ideas at international conferences and to private industry. He received scholarships and awards for his work developing alcohol breathalyzers, combustion analyzers and ozone sensors.

He met his wife on a conference trip to Greece and the couple soon settled in Los Angeles where he accepted a position as an engineering professor at UCLA. While there, he developed and commercialized nanotechnology for sensing, communications and computing working closely with the U.S. semiconductor and defense industries.

Dr. Koz became a sought-after expert consultant for legal cases involving toxic gas detection and learned that there was an open niche for products that could prevent toxic gas exposure injuries. Children’s Hospital LA Study on Mobile Devices includes UV-C Disinfection

LINDON, Utah /ScoopCloud/ -- Use of smartphones and other mobile devices in the healthcare setting has skyrocketed over the past decade, but infection prevention protocols designed to keep them clean have not kept pace, says PhoneSoap. The researchers found that total pathogenic bacterial counts were reduced by 98.2% after one 30-second disinfection cycle and by >99.99% after two disinfection cycles.

"The use of UV-C light allows us to disinfect cell phones in a sustainable manner without the use of wipes or cleaning products," said Sanchi Malhotra, MD, a fellow in infectious diseases at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and primary investigator of the study. The researchers also point to the fact that many wipes are not intended for use on mobile devices, are not recyclable, and are subject to shortage.

The effective pathogenic reduction seen after just a 30-second disinfection cycle aligns with the needs of the healthcare industry for which time constraints and workflow patterns demand a rapid and efficient solution. The technology also provides an opportunity for establishing an easily-implemented disinfection protocol.

Jeffrey Bender, MD, a specialist in infectious diseases at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, said, "In hospitals, we are already using UV-C light to disinfect equipment, patient rooms, and other spaces. Using a UV-C device allows us to standardize the process of disinfecting personal cell phones and potentially further reduce risk of infection."

Citing survey results demonstrating that the staff overwhelmingly endorsed use of the device, the study authors conclude that the phone and tablet disinfecting technology offers a valuable and well-received approach to reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections and protecting healthcare providers.

KESWICK, Va. /ScoopCloud/ -- With 25 years of research involving primarily the cardiovascular complications of spaceflight and more recently of the moon walkers, particularly Neil Armstrong on his historic mission and James Irwin (Apollo 15), extraordinary findings were discovered. In an editorial, published recently in the Journal of Hypertension and Management, Dr. Rowe published that iron dust inhalation contributed to Armstrong's extraordinary diastolic blood pressure ( 160/135 ) on Earth return, consistent with impairment of cardiac function; his high adrenaline -heart failure during his lunar walk, undoubtedly played a role.

On the other hand Irwin, with a history of hypertension a month before his mission (145/ 110), returned with a bicycle stress test of 275/125 after only 3 minutes of exercise; furthermore on return, Irwin showed stress test - "blue finger nails" consistent with vascular injuries.

Having supervised over 5000 hospital based symptom-limited maximum treadmill stress tests, Dr. Rowe had never seen such extraordinary vascular complications, apparently triggered by highly toxic iron-laden dust and intensified by a magnesium deficiency invariably occurring with space flight and extremely common world-wide.

Since at least a third of the world's population has hypertension - with very recent studies showing that with present guidelines, among Americans, hypertension may actually exist in a half of the population, urban pollution problems must be vigorously addressed. Also, a European study has shown that 12 year old children may have hypertension from iron inhalation with often persistence of hypertension to adulthood.

Inhalation of brake iron dust may simulate the highly toxic lunar dust inhalation with at least 90 percent of brakes made with iron. In China, Dr. Rowe's experience of having seen not over 10 cars a day in Beijing in 1988 with no obvious pollution and his return to Beijing in 2011 with inability to see the street from his 9th. Floor hotel room is very disturbing.

Furthermore the toxicity of iron brakes is growing but in comparison with global warming, there isn't the necessity of waiting 50 years before determining how great the danger might be.
