CANBERRA, Australia /ScoopCloud/ -- Scores of protesters marched on the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Annual Congress in Canberra to demand it end its support of electroshock treatment, psychiatric restraints, forced drugging, and involuntary detainment. The protest was organized by Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), a mental health industry watchdog founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology. CCHR demands a complete ban on coercive and dangerous psychiatric practices, citing their harmful effects on the vulnerable.

Canberrans were invited to attend CCHR's "Psychiatry: An Industry of Death Exhibit," open daily in Canberra from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through 24 May. The free exhibit exposes the history of psychiatry from its dark beginnings in the Bedlam Psychiatric Hospital in England through to the present, highlighting the grievous harm it causes patients.

At the exhibit's opening, Lloyd Wyles, an Indigenous Australian and retired senior radio producer and broadcaster from Northern Queensland, spoke of psychiatry's role in the white Australia policy and South Africa's apartheid. The exhibit documents how psychiatry fostered racism by inventing and promoting the pseudoscience of "eugenics," resulting in the forced sterilization of Indigenous people and people of color.

Those who do not act to rid society of psychiatry, he said, are just as guilty as the practicing psychiatrist. If we do not take action, we could lose our entire civilization.

Stuart Richardson, a Christian minister from Restitution, Mind, Body and Soul Ministries, also spoke at the Exhibit's opening. He became aware of the dangers of psychiatry when he was detained involuntarily when he was younger. He spoke of letting people know there are alternatives to harmful psychiatric drugs and stressed the importance of finding the real cause of the problem including medical check-ups, diet, sleep and exercise.

RANZCP's support of coercive practices, including the use of ECT, is out of step with the guidelines published by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in October 2023. RANZCP continues to label electroshock as "therapeutic."

Both the WHO and the UN direct practitioners and their professional organizations to inform patients that electroshock is an "irreversible intervention" causing "memory loss and brain damage." They also call for the prohibition of involuntary electroshock and its use on children, stating "International human rights standards clarify that ECT without consent violates the right to physical and mental integrity and may constitute torture and ill-treatment."

At this year's Nagar Kirtan in Coffs Harbour, a city on the north coast of New South Wales, Singhs SMC promoted the importance of ending domestic violence. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, one in six women, 15 and older, have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or previous partner.

United for Human Rights volunteers walked along the procession route with volunteers and club members who adopted the United for Human Rights campaign as a program that can help them achieve their own purpose of promoting human decency and respect.

Volunteers from United for Human Rights NSW handed out booklets that raise awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Some 3,500 local residents gathered for the festival.

Singhs SMC's support of human rights at the Coffs Harbour Nagar Kirtan was "a powerful testament to the spirit of unity, compassion, and activism of the Sikh community and its collective commitment to creating a more just and inclusive society," said a representative of United for Human Rights NSW.

Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is an international mental health watchdog founded in 1969 by psychiatrist Thomas Szasz and the Church of Scientology.

A chilling exhibit on the violation of human rights in the psychiatric industry, Psychiatry: An Industry of Death highlights little-known facts about potentially harmful side effects of psychiatric drugs, restraint, seclusion and electroshock and their use without informed consent - even on children.

Despite dozens of psychiatric drug warnings issued by the Australian Government, 44.4 million prescriptions were dispensed for mental health-related medications (both subsidized and under co-payment) in Australia, to 4.7 million Australians according to the 2021/22 report and 1,371,095 New South Wales (NSW) adults and children consumed these drugs that year.

The NSW exhibit raised awareness of continued abuse in the psychiatric industry despite UN and WHO guidelines of October 2023 calling for an end to coercive psychiatry.

One such abuse is electroshock (ECT). This is the application of hundreds of volts of electricity applied to the head, creating the equivalent of a grand mal seizure. It can cause brain damage, heart attacks, memory loss - even death.

United Nations and World Health Organization guidance called electroshock an "irreversible intervention," and stated, "ECT is not recommended for children, and this should be prohibited through legislation." Yet Medicare continues to fund ECT in Australia. What's more, there is no ban in place to prevent the use of ECT on children. It can also be forcibly given to involuntarily detained NSW patients without their consent.

In 2021/22 there were 804 Tribunal Hearings in NSW to consider application of forced ECT on involuntary patients, nearly 90 percent of which were approved. These hearings included five applications to give ECT to girls under age 16, three of which were approved.

Those touring the exhibit were encouraged to sign a petition calling for a ban on the use of electroshock in the state.

This exhibit features 10 display panels incorporating audio-visual presentations depicting key concerns and topics of human rights abuses in the mental health system with statements from psychiatrists, doctors, lawyers, legal and human rights experts, and victims of psychiatric brutalities.

CCHR NSW states: "With NSW's record spending on mental health reaching a staggering $2.9 billion in 2022/23, (up more than 52% since 2017/18) psychiatry is not being held accountable to produce results. If the NSW mental health system were working, the numbers of children and adults needing assistance would be decreasing as people got better. Instead, the lives of vulnerable children and adults are continually being placed at risk with electroshock, psychiatric restraint and potentially dangerous psychiatric drugs which can be forced on patients, potentially setting up patients for life and a recurring revenue stream for psychiatry with poor and harmful results."

Despite its diversity today, with nearly 30 percent of Australia's population born overseas, cultural and ethnic inclusion is a relatively new concept.

From the devastating treatment of the country's First Nation people beginning with England's colonization, to the 1901 "White Australia Policy" that continued through World War II, bias and prejudice was ingrained in the culture, and, according to a 2023 Monash University study, these attitudes persist to this day.

This is why educating youth on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is essential. And what better place to share the campaign than at a festival like this that promotes respect for different cultures, beliefs and attitudes. Youth for Human Rights International's materials help people of all ages understand the 30 rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - rights that apply to all people, all cultures and all geographic zones.

Volunteers from the Church of Scientology reached out to youth with What Are Human Rights? booklets, materials produced by the Church-sponsored human rights educational campaign. Those staffing festival booths were happy to accept sets of these materials for visitors to take home with them.

Educators in countries around the world routinely comment on how Youth for Human Rights materials change attitudes by reaching kids where they live. "Student groups to whom I've shown the Youth for Human Rights video, The Story of Human Rights found it inspiring. They perceived it as a catalyst for social change and becoming more involved in their communities," said one educator. They really take home the message that human rights start with people like them.

The materials "definitely get students' attention," said a middle school teacher. "I've noticed how much more aware my students are of each other's feelings and they have begun, some for the first time, to have an awareness of their own rights as human beings."

"I feel that this program affects me by creating a deeper regard toward human rights," said a student age 14. "From this point on, I'll feel more empathetic and respectful of others' rights and change how others think about what we deserve."

United for Human Rights and its program for young people, Youth for Human Rights, are inspired by author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who said: "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream." In a world where people are barraged by reports of human rights violations, Scientologists work to uplift the culture by promoting full implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through United for Human Rights, one of the world's broadest human rights education and public information initiatives.

These materials are available in 17 languages on the website of United for Human Rights, including a free e-course on the background, history and significance of the document and each of its 30 articles.

Scientologists Celebrate What They Love Most About Melbourne on the Anniversary of the Dedication of their Ideal Scientology Church
