Kuni Foundation Awards $100,000 Housing Access Grant to Community Vision

PORTLAND, Ore. /ScoopCloud/ -- Community Vision, a leader in advancing self-advocacy and person-focused housing for people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities, received a $100,000 grant from the Kuni Foundation to enhance housing access efforts.

"Housing access is the basis of leading a self-determined life. When the individuals we work with have housing that meets their needs, the impacts reverberate to other aspects of their lives, and often the growth is nothing short of transformative. I am excited to see the advances we will make in equitable access to housing thanks to our partnership with the Kuni Foundation," says Allen Hines, Community Vision's Housing Access Director.

The region's lack of affordable housing impacts people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) especially hard, as this community is often left out of affordable housing policy discussions and planning. Yet the majority of individuals who experience I/DD are low income and increasingly face housing insecurity.

In addition to financial challenges, individuals who experience I/DD are continually isolated, due to decades of systemic barriers that prevent inclusion. Thirty years after the adoption of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), people are still grouped together outside the classroom, in specialized housing, and in certain areas of the community. Individuals often face multiple barriers to accessing safe, stable, and affordable housing such as communication challenges, lack of understanding and outright discrimination. These factors, combined with a lack of navigation conspire to limit independent and person-focused housing options for individuals who experience I/DD.

"Our goal is to transform a lack of understanding and awareness regarding the housing needs of individuals who experience I/DD into enthusiasm and action for increased options and opportunities," said Greg Goodwin, Board Chair of the Kuni Foundation. "We're excited about this initiative and proud to support the inclusive efforts of Community Vision, who work to bring the words and intentions of the ADA to life."

In response to the housing crisis faced by people who experience I/DD, the Housing Access Program will focus on three main areas: the development of new units; housing support and navigation services; and advocacy efforts.

To advance the creation of affordable, accessible units, Community Vision will partner with local housing developers and Community Development Corporations (CDCs) to set aside units in new housing projects for people who experience I/DD and think creatively about other housing options, such as ADUs. The organization will also help families and individuals navigate the complexities of accessing affordable housing, in addition to providing the support and resources people need to be successful in maintaining housing. In collaboration with activists, providers and other stakeholders, Community Vision will advocate for system change at the local and state level, including state rental assistance funding, integrated and inclusive housing models, and the development of an accessible rental registry.

Inked Gaming Donates 15,000 Masks to Hospitals, First Responders

CORVALLIS, Ore. /ScoopCloud/ -- When healthcare workers around Oregon started asking for hand-sewn mask donations, Oregon-based gaming supplies company, Inked Gaming, answered the call. It quickly set its sewing team into action to create more than 15,000 face masks that will be donated to hospitals and first responders suffering from the state's personal protective equipment (PPE) shortage.

"I had two seamstresses who didn't have much work to do, so I thought we could help out and use our time and resources to give back," Thomas Pool, CEO, Inked Gaming, says. "We're donating these face masks to local hospitals, veterinary clinics, nursing homes, fire stations, delivery drivers and more."

While hand-sewn cloth masks do not offer the same protection as N95 and surgical masks, the CDC website on the Coronavirus states, "In settings where facemasks are not available, HCP might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort." As a small, locally-owned company, Inked Gaming needed help funding the supplies, so for every face mask or face shield purchased on the company's website, Inked Gaming pledged to donate 19 additional masks.

"I never anticipated the amount of support we'd receive," Pool says.

Inked Gaming received enough orders to create more than their initial end goal of 10,000 face masks for donation in less than four days.

"We figured we would sell enough to keep our employees busy for the next couple months. We didn't expect to sell 500 through the weekend," Pool says. "We were amazed by the response and by how so many people were willing and wanting to help."

After so many were sold, the company was now faced with a decision of whether to shut down the operation or to lower the number.

"At 10,000 donated masks, we knew that if we kept up at the same pace, we would be putting ourselves in a position where we couldn't fulfill our promises," Pool explains. "After talking with the team, we decided that lowering the donation level, but staying with the cause would be best."

To account for this, Inked Gaming changed their pledge to donating an additional four masks for every one mask sold.

On Friday, April 3, President Donald Trump announced the recommendation that Americans should wear non-medical cloth face masks when in public. With these new guidelines, Inked Gaming reports seeing another significant increase in orders. Its team of two seamstresses is working hard to keep up with the number of masks to be sewn, while following all CDC and Oregon safety guidelines regarding COVID-19.

"We've had several local requests to help sew the donation masks too. Right now, that's the most helpful," Pool says. "We're wanting to get them out as soon as we can and the community's support has been so uplifting."

The company has also located a surgical mask supplier which will allow them to supplement some of its donations with higher quality masks, and reduce some of the strain on the small sewing team.

First Ever Rose City Truck Pull to be Held on September 12

Art and Antiques Lovers Find Bonanza at Event in Pendleton

Both Robert Kellan, MD and Paul Koch, MD, spoke of Mr. Arboleda's determination to pursue a career in ophthalmology. I have no doubt he has the temperament and the drive to accomplish many wonderful things and change our world as we know it," Koch stated.

Mr. Arboleda is a third-year student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His initial studies in biomedical engineering drove his interest in ophthalmology. "I was not satisfied by simply creating novel devices, I wanted to be the physician with the experience to face problems and invent better solutions to treat patients," he said. After collaborating with researchers in France during his tenure as a Fulbright Fellow, he began a photodynamic therapy (PDT) project.

Kellan noted Mr. Arboleda's passion for caring for those in need, "Alejandro clearly demonstrates his compassion to make the world a better place by his eager participation in ophthalmic mission trips to South America and his tireless efforts to bring visual rehabilitation to the needy."

Mr. Arboledo expressed how these experiences reaffirmed his dedication to medicine, "I have followed each patient's journey and am humbled by their reactions to their recovery."

Upon receipt of the award, Mr. Arboleda discussed how the scholarship mirrors both his commitment to driving innovation and serving the population, "I feel very honored to receive the Koch Kellan Scholarship. Ms. Zhang's passion for ophthalmology was cemented during a research project focused on bringing technological diagnostic advances to some of China's poorest provinces, where high rates of preventable blindness occur primarily due to lack of screening opportunities. After spending last year researching dry eye disease and leading UNC's student-run ophthalmology clinic, Ms. Zhang is committed to bringing ophthalmological innovation to the rural areas of the state she has come to call home.

Upon receipt of the award, Ms. Zhang expressed her appreciation not only for the financial assistance that the scholarship provides, but also for the spotlight that it places on ophthalmology. "Ophthalmology is not always at the forefront of people's minds when they think of mainstream medicine. As a student who is very passionate about ophthalmology and its impact, it is extremely encouraging and validating to find a scholarship that honors my future profession."

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 2.5% and 10%, is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist used for dilation of the pupil due to its vasoconstrictor and mydriatic action. Phenylephrine possesses predominantly adrenergic effects. In the eye, phenylephrine acts locally as a potent vasoconstrictor and mydriatic by constricting ophthalmic blood vessels and the radial muscle of the iris.

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution Important Safety Information:

Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 10%, is contraindicated in patients with hypertension or thyrotoxicosis, as well as in pediatric patients under the age of one due to the increased risk of systemic toxicity. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 2.5%, should not be used in these patients. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution, USP 10% and 2.5% is for topical ophthalmic use only, and not for injection.

Serious cardiovascular reactions, including ventricular arrhythmias and myocardial infarctions, some fatal, and significant elevations in blood pressure have been reported. Caution is advised in pediatric patients less than five years of age and in patients with elevated blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or hyperthyroidism. Blood pressure should be monitored in patients with cardiovascular or endocrine disease. Rebound miosis has been reported one day after instillation.

Ocular adverse reactions include eye pain and stinging on instillation, temporary blurred vision and photophobia. Cardiovascular adverse reactions include increase in blood pressure, syncope, myocardial infarction, tachycardia, arrhythmia and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
