New Issue of Scattered Comics’ ‘GENIUS’ on Kickstarter Contains Extensive Story Written by the Late Rachel Pollack, a Beloved Trans Writer

In addition to Pollack's work, the oversized issue contains stories written by veteran comic book writers BEN TINSLEY and CASEY COLUMBUS. The Pollack story was originally solicited by Tinsley back in 2010. It was originally published in a 2011 issue.

"That story was amazing," said Jake Tinsley, Ben Tinsley's adult son and comic book writing partner. "Rachel Pollack had such epic energy."

Jason Dube, Scattered Comics publisher, agreed Pollack brought something incredible to GENIUS.

"We were floored when we learned Rachel had passed away," Dube said. "She was such an amazing talent. And Ben is always talking about how supportive and friendly she was."

Pollack is survived by her wife, Judith Zoe Mateen.

According to legend, the Akashic Library, or Akashic records, contain information about all universal events, thoughts, words, emotions and intent ever to have occurred to anyone and everyone throughout all space and time.

Set on the Texas island Galveston, GENIUS: The Akashic Avatar centers around TANYA, a beautiful teenager of color selected by cosmic forces to become the librarian and guardian of the Akashic Library known in legend as the Akashic Avatar.

After initial publication of GENIUS A few years back, Pollack suggested to Ben Tinsley during an email exchange that he re-publish the story because she was constantly receiving questions about the legendary Akashic Library.

"Her fans kept asking her if the Akashic Library was real or not," Jake Tinsley said. "She told my dad she felt him reprinting story she'd written for us might help ... But we really thought she'd be around to see this."

It took some time to put the comic back together.

The published art for the comic, drawn by Casey Columbus had been lost in the shuffle.

All that remained were the stack of comics Ben Tinsley retained from that original run.

Ben Tinsley was able to recover the original pencils Columbus rendered.

Jason Dube and Tinsley worked closely together to reassemble the comic book, color it and add Pollack's scripted dialogue, which Ben Tinsley HAD retained.

"All of that took a minute," Jason Dube said. "I also worked on the original issue. But it had been published so long ago."

Jake Tinsley said his father secured the copyright for the character shortly before the comic book was originally published.

What happened to the original GENIUS comic was a lesson in organization for Ben Tinsley, his son said.

This new issue includes commentary from Pollack, provided by the beloved writer before dying.

His husband, James has been a warrior while battling challenging health issues.

Alan continues a positive and hopeful outlook while managing to continue his theatre career. Like many actors met with early success things weren't always so easy and he had many bumps along the way. Alan was homeless in the winter in Chicago. He stayed positive and knew that there would soon be a way out. That came from a choreographer friend who offered to let him tag along to Virginia to work for a theme park for the summer. Alan came along for the ride and was soon cast in three of the shows for the year and found another passion working in the costume shop on his off time.

Alan has never felt discouraged or bitter. Instead, he stayed strong and steadfast and used his time of homelessness to create a CD entitled "Songs for Souls." This CD was recorded by homeless and street musicians at Sun Studios in Memphis. The proceeds went towards breaking the cycle of homelessness by getting tutors into shelters.

NGPA Announces New Executive Director, Justin Ellixson-Andrews

ST. Justin will begin his service as Executive Director of NGPA starting on February 8, 2023.

Scott Konzem, NGPA Board Chair, stated, "We're excited to take NGPA to the next level with the selection of Justin as NGPA's first full-time executive leader. Justin's long history with NGPA, his strategic vision for the future and connection with the membership make him the ideal candidate to help us with this transition."

Justin most recently served as Head of Talent Acquisition and Learning & Development at Delux Public Charter, also known as JSX. At JSX he oversaw teams responsible for developing, leading and maintaining the organization's recruiting and learning and development teams. He also established JSX's DE&I function and led JSX's efforts to achieve a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's "Corporate Equality Index," a national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer employees.

Prior to JSX, Justin served as a Regional Talent Acquisition Consultant for Republic Airline and Director of International Admissions for Airline Transport Professionals. He is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a B.S. in Aeronautics and a M.S. in Leadership. He is also a private pilot.

One of the Largest Pilot Hiring Events to be Hosted Next Month in California by NGPA

‘My Father The Queen’ Wins Best LGBT Screenplay from Best Script Award – London

CYPRESS, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- The Best Script Award - London selected "My Father The Queen" as the winner of the Best LGBT Screenplay during their Autumn 2022 competition. The screenplay was written by filmmaker Lisa N. Alexander, owner of PrettyWork Studios. It is her first feature work.

The screenplay was selected from hundreds of entries and according to Alexander, "a wonderful nod" to the work that took three years to complete. "To win best screenplay for my first ever feature is a huge source of pride," the filmmaker said. "I'm very grateful for the competition and the judges who saw the beauty and relevance in 'My Father The Queen,'" she continued.

The film addresses mental health in the Black community, what happens to the family dynamic and familial relationships when a member chooses to live closeted, how "daddy issues" manifest in real life, and finally, what healing looks like.

Alexander is grateful for all the people who encouraged her to complete the screenplay as well as shoulder some of the pre-production work. "I could not have asked for a better writing coach than Khufere [Qhamata]," said Alexander. "And having Professor Stanley Davis on the team has been one of the best gifts I could have received," she continued.

Alexander is currently raising funds for the project and expects production to begin Summer 2023 with a film release in 2024. She will direct and produce the film through her production company, PrettyWork Studios and has begun building her team.

David Vass’ One Man Show ‘What Could Go Wrong?’ Arrives to Pay Per View

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- 71-year-old gay elder David Vass, who participated in the birthing of the gay liberation movement from seedlings, has launched his long-awaited one-man show, 'What Could Go Wrong?' His series of monologues is based on over 70 diaries kept since Vass was seven years old.

What started as three live performances just before the COVID pandemic led Vass to hire a film crew to record the 'evening with,' when it became obvious to him that traveling the show live to small venues throughout the USA, Canada and the UK would not be possible due to health regulations. The resulting pay-per-view movie is a condensed history of nearly everything that happened to the diarist from the early 50's through the onset of AIDs. He references this 81-minute production as part one and is working on a part two that will bring the PPV film and the live performances that again are being booked, up to the present.

A minimalist set reflects the intimate ambiance for his brutally honest, dramatic, funny, disturbing and at times cringe-worthy series of monologues culled from the diaries that he has kept for over 60 years, creating the bones of this extraordinary 'evening with'.

His one-man show, just prior to the onset of the pandemic, traveled to New York City, Indianapolis, London, San Francisco and Australia. As the realities of the travel restrictions because of CoVid were realized, David used that two-year period to rewrite the live version material and create the movie script. He also redesigned the play website, created his YouTube Television Channel, and legalized the production company ('I'm Afraid Knot LLC') into a non-profit 501-C organization.

Fervently believing, given the content and candid honesty of this adults-only production, that "audience members should feel free to walk out or turn off the PPV, no offense taken by me", he also reminds the audiences of both methods of seeing the 'evening with' his strong belief that our collective freedom of speech is under attack during these 'woke' times. This first half of his life can be brutal and repugnant, as life can be. There are performances where the coarse language used can come under attack, which he brushes off with "this is how white trash talked in those days."

Vass makes a point of meeting audience members at the live performances after the show in the lobby, if there is one, or under the eaves of the proverbial barn. For those watching the PPV, he urges feedback and reads it all - davidvasstheplay@gmail.com.

David says, "My young brothers and sisters, or however you identify from the current 14-pronoun, one adjective cis/non-binary tribe of which I am a member, you've been handed gay rights and a large degree of equality and variety on a silver platter, and off the backs of us elders, us gays and brave drag queens who remember how we got from the early 50's to now. With RvW overturned (making way for gay marriage to be overturned as well), get ready to put your/our bodies on the streets again, blocking the streets again, making noise on the streets again and taking over the streets again."

He recalls at seven years of age being asked if he was a 'butch or a fem', a few years later a 'top or a bottom', skip forward to 'are you bi'. These questions all asked in the 50's and with no resources for Vass to reference - he didn't know any of those words. He learned at 14 what fellatio meant when a uniformed policeman pulled him into an alley and demanded just that. His first sexual encounter was not warm and fuzzy but makes for a sad but fascinating monologue segment about that time in gay history when the police and the Mafia pulled the strings on what the gay tribe could or could not do, and the prices paid for that suppression.

Vass reflects, "This history, this collection of real stories needs to be told, to be kept alive in the first-person for generations of our tribe who follow. Please be clear, this is not a gay play, it is a series of experiences told in monologues with the details refreshed by my beloved diaries - a series of encounters and life-changing events I have lived. Yes, I happen to be gay, and I use this theatrical forum to tell the absolute truth as I know it, and it is from a gay perspective. How could it not be? This was all seen through my eyes. I believe the monologues are relatable to everyone, and the 'evening with' also features stories about my time working with strippers, Broadway stars, movie legends, Grammy winning singers, assorted celebrities and so much more. We are all humans first, and then members of whatever 'tribe' we resonate to."

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra is proud to present ‘LCO Pride: A Rainbow of Repertoire’

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra is proud to present "LCO Pride: A Rainbow of Repertoire" on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts. This chamber concert will celebrate Pride Month by showcasing LGBTQ+ composers from the Lowell area and around the world.

Creative director of LCO, Em Russell, states that putting on this concert has been a dream of the theirs since the orchestra's very first season! As well as works by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Benjamin Britten, this concert will showcase a World Premiere by composer Julia Moss, featuring soloist mezzo-soprano Julianna Smith, as well as exciting works by four other living composers.

Queer people have made many significant contributions to the classical music community, yet their identities are often concealed. This concert is meant to embrace and celebrate these identities, which we hope can one day become the norm in classical music culture.

Stylistically, this concert really has something for everyone, from poetry lovers to rock metal-heads. While Kevin Lubin's string quartet "The Flower Shop" includes a spoken narration with words by Virginia Woolf; Hannah Rice has written a Heavy Metal string quartet called "SQ666," which has been composed using techniques from heavy metal rock music.

This concert also features a variety of ensemble sizes, varying from string quartets all the way up to large ensemble works conducted by LCO's music director Orlando Cela. Steven Sérpa's "An Invocation," for solo oboe and strings, is a tone poem inspired by his long-time collaborator, queer poet Jeffery Beam, about the small beauties of nature. Sérpa has also written about more difficult topics, including an oratorio on HIV stigma with Inversion Ensemble and an opera responding to the Pulse nightclub shooting with companies in Chicago, Montréal, Hartford, and Austin.

Ethan Soledad's "Why Wait," for a 9-person ensemble, is about his own journey of self-discovery and defeating self-doubt. Ethan's music has been described as "bold, dramatic, and unapologetically expressive."

The largest work of the afternoon will be a World Premiere by composer Julia Moss: "The World is Too Much for Us". Written for mezzo-soprano soloist Julianna Smith and a 10-person chamber ensemble, the work is based on conversations between the composer-performer pair about the feeling of being overwhelmed by the ever-growing clutter of life. Inspired by these ideas, she chose to set the piece to a poem by William Wordsworth about how we have become so obsessed with possessing material items and controlling nature.

"By drowning out nature," Moss says, "we are really drowning out ourselves. The piece is meant to be an optimistic and empowering reminder of what we should really be paying attention to." In the fall of 2022, Moss will enroll at the University of Southern California's (USC) Thornton School of Music to earn a Masters in Music Composition.

"We also wanted to show through our programming that queer composers have stood the test of time. There are so many composers whose music we play all the time and whose names most anyone would recognize, but nobody knows they were queer. Tchaikovsky, for instance. He was queer. Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, just to name a few more of the "classics." And of course this doesn't even start to scratch the surface of the loads of queer composers living today, nor accurately represent the diversity that exists among them. But this is why we wanted to program someone as old as Baroque composer Jean-Baptiste Lully, who was born in 1632, to show that we really have been here all along, only now can we start to proudly assert our identities."

Lowell Chamber Orchestra presents ‘As One,’ the most produced contemporary opera in North America, on the Transgender Day of Remembrance

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- Lowell Chamber Orchestra is proud to present "As One" on Saturday, November 20, 2021, 7:30 p.m., at Middlesex Community College. The critically acclaimed, 75-minute chamber opera created by composer Laura Kaminsky and librettists Kimberly Reed and Mark Campbell with film by Ms. Reed, has had nearly 50 productions around the world and, according to OPERA America, is the most produced contemporary opera in North America.

In "As One," two voices-Hannah after and Hannah before-share the part of a sole transgender protagonist. Fifteen songs comprise the three-part narrative; with empathy and humor, they trace Hannah's experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years-and finally traveling alone to a different country, where she realizes some truths about herself.

For the first time in the opera's history, "As One" will be performed by an entirely gender-expansive cast: mezzo-soprano Tona Brown and baritone Rahzé Cheatham will play "Hannah after" and "Hannah before," respectively. Further, the work will be performed on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that commemorates violence against the transgender community.

Says Ms. Brown: "Hannah's story is a story of struggle, self discovery and triumph...and anyone can relate to that even if they don't know much about transgender people. For the first time in history transgender people can see themselves represented on the stage of an opera! This performance will go down in history!"

Orlando Cela, music director for Lowell Chamber Orchestra, will conduct with stage direction by Em Russell.

The gender-reversed movie is set to revolutionize and bring to the limelight the originality of the LGBT community, especially with the committed and fearless casts that deserve a voice and an identity in the industry, despite being gender non-conforming.

Disney PRIDE in Concert is being produced in conjunction with Disney Concerts, the concert production and licensing division of Disney Music Group. It will feature all-new musical arrangements by Chad Weirick and a book by BGMC Executive Producer Bill Casey and Tom Choinski. Disney PRIDE in Concert will also be available for licensing in the future through Disney Concerts for performance by choruses around the world for all voice parts and voice configurations. This collaboration is the first time Disney Concerts has partnered with an organization to create an LGBTQ-specific concert package.

Disney PRIDE in Concert will take place during LGBTQ Pride Month, which commemorates a pivotal point in LGBTQ history: the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, when patrons of the Stonewall Bar rebelled and fought back against the constant anti-gay harassment by New York City police of LGBTQ people and spaces.

Over $150,000 in Aviation Scholarships to be Awarded by NGPA in 2021

Denial of Coverage for Gender-Affirming Care Declared Unlawful

SAN DIEGO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- TransFamily Support Services (transfamilysos.org) today announced a milestone victory in the organization's mission to build a world where all genders are accepted and treated equally. After calling on the California Department of Insurance to remove unjust barriers for accessing gender reassignment surgery, the department's General Counsel has just declared that health insurance companies may no longer deny coverage for patient's based solely on their age.

In an Opinion Letter issued on December 30, state-operated health insurers were ordered to ease policy limits on male chest reconstruction surgery for female-to-male patients undergoing gender-affirming care for gender dysphoria.

"The world is gaining an understanding around gender identity and learning the importance of treatment for those seeking it," says TransFamily Support Services Founder, Kathie Moehlig. "Trans youth have the highest rates of attempted suicide, 50 percent more than their adolescent peers. To deny care sole based on age puts trans youth's mental well-being at risk."

Moehlig has dedicated her efforts for nearly a decade to ensure that transgender and gender non-conforming youth throughout the country feel supported at all stages of their transition process.

"The issuance of this letter by the California Department of Insurance is a critical move toward improving the lives of youth suffering with gender dysphoria," adds Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy, MD, Medical Director from the Center for Transyouth Health and Development at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and medical advisor to TransFamily Support and Services. Both Moehlig and Olson-Kennedy - along with all who support the issuance - acknowledge that the refusal of coverage violates state gender non-discrimination laws and regulations, and other coverage and nondiscrimination standards. "Determination of medical necessity being attached to a chronologic age undermines the complex decision making of youth, their families and their care teams," continues Olson-Kennedy. "The work of TransFamily Support Services and the reiteration of the protected services by California Department of Insurance will reduce barriers to accessing gender-affirming services for transgender youth, and offer this vulnerable group of young people an improved opportunity to live authentically."

A recent Cedars Sinai study found that gender dysphoria manifests in early childhood and can persist for years before patients undergo counseling and treatment - oftentimes resulting in a poor quality of life for transgender people throughout their lifetime. The study found that 73% of transgender women and 78% of transgender men surveyed first experienced gender dysphoria by age 7.

Taking the well-being of youth into account, the California Department of Insurance will now mandate that health insurance companies consider a patient's specific clinical situation, holistically, in determining medical necessity and coverage for the treatment of gender dysphoria.

"There is no magical age for [gender-affirming surgery]," says Moehlig, who reiterates that this essential medical care can be carried out at earlier ages, determined by a case-by-case basis. "The importance of our work lies in the outcome of our youth feeling affirmed, emotionally healthy, and the world seeing them for who they genuinely are."

In his LGBTQ memoir, Jackson details the psychological torment his circumcision caused and the detrimental impact it had on his sexual function. In seeking treatment for his condition, Jackson was accosted and chased out of exam rooms by doctors who branded him immoral and perverse for suggesting circumcision is harmful. Jackson eventually found a surgeon sympathetic to his plight and agreed to treat him.

Jackson endured two experimental surgeries to repair the damage done to him at birth, only to be shunned by hospital nurses who refused to care for him because they didn't approve of what he'd done. Jackson explains, "Their behavior was childish and unprofessional. It's hard to believe circumcision is anything but cult doctrine when alleged professionals act like that for puritanical reasons alone."

Jackson's book debunks the alleged health benefits behind circumcision with facts and statistics, and he takes particular offense with comparing circumcision to a vaccine as a preventative for HIV/AIDS. "They used that exact argument for circumcision and syphilis a hundred years ago, but the statistics don't hold up. Foreskins aren't the plague, they're a natural part of the male anatomy. To call circumcision a vaccine is dangerous and delusional."

Jackson believes his book faces an uphill battle because most readers will refuse to hear the facts. "Circumcision is the oldest cult ritual in history, and it's rooted in religion. As a gay man, I know all too well that people are motivated to protect religion over children, and they'll say and do almost anything to uphold that bias."

Jackson equates circumcision forced upon any child as nothing less than sexual mutilation. "It's important for everyone to know, the doctor credited with making circumcision commonplace in America, was obsessed with circumcising all women too. Every child, boy or girl, has the right to be who they were born to be. No baby should be forced to undergo a surgical alteration at birth to remedy a malady that doesn't exist."

Jackson's book depicts how the results of his surgically restored foreskin were so convincing that his doctors, and even his husband of 30 years, believed he had a natural foreskin. But Jackson remained unsatisfied, and decades later, used manual stretching techniques to complete his transition. Techniques, Jackson points out, that date back to ancient times.

"Circumcision is a fundamental human rights violation, and restoring my foreskin was the cure. No one has the right to force surgical conformity onto children to make them fit their idea of morality."

Jackson's book details how Christian American doctors usurped First Amendment religious freedoms to mandate the oldest surgery in history onto a nation. The overzealousness used to sell circumcision to their patients included an alleged cure for distemper in children, to the US government providing prostitutes on Navy boats in exchange for foreskins, to the wild claim that one patient's foreskin caused him to develop a brain tumor.

Jackson elaborates, "No parent wants to believe they've harmed their child for no reason, but that's the lie these doctors have forced upon us."

Jay J. Jackson is a freelance writer in Los Angeles and is an avid "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" fan: "One offers a mythological alternative to religious fables, the other, hope for humanity's future where we've outgrown the inane aspects of those fables in favor of acceptance and unity." Champions of Southern Queer Visibility Announce Second Virtual Telethon

Organizers of the telethon aim to not only support southern artists impacted by COVID-19, but also to raise awareness of the problems that metronormativity pose to rural queer visibility. Metronormativity assumes that while rural and urban existences differ, urban queer life represents the "norm", often turning a blind eye to bigoted, stereotypical portrayals of rural culture.

Online applications for micro-grants and the second telethon opened on Friday, May 1. Artists and performers from all LGBTQ+ backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Proceeds from the event will go to performers and other rural community members in need of support. Our Family Coalition Celebrates 21 Years Advocating for LGBTQ Families at Night Out Gala

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- On Friday, May 12, 2017, Our Family Coalition (OFC), California's premier LGBTQ family organization, brings together 400 attendees for a Night Out to celebrate the organization's 21 years of advocacy, education, and community-building. The gala event includes elected officials, corporate sponsors, community partners and major donors, many of whom are LGBT people with children.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee will receive the Notable Ally Award at the gala. Lee, long one of the Bay Area's fiercest voices in Washington, serves as Vice-Chair and Founding Member of the LGBT Equality Caucus and Co-Founder & Co-Chair of the Congressional HIV/AIDS Caucus.

President of AT&T California Ken McNeely will receive the Luminary Award. McNeely, who lives with his husband and two children in San Francisco, is leading the way in the private sector. He was the first openly gay officer of AT&T, and serves on the Officer Advisory Board for AT&T's LGBT and allied Employee Resource Group, the oldest LGBT employee resource group in the nation.

"At 21 years old this year, Our Family Coalition is all grown up," says OFC's first Executive Director of color, Renata Moreira. "We're more than ready to meet the challenges facing LGBT families under the Trump administration. This event gives us a chance to celebrate our resilience, take pride in where we've been, and generate energy for our next, bold, intersectional steps forward."

"I am honored Congresswoman Barbara Lee will be there and honored as well-though I am more likely the 'as well,'" jokes honoree Spiegel. "Michelle Meow is the usually hilarious political comic MC. The work I'm being recognized for has been about helping make sure LGBT couples are included fully in family law settings. That work goes hand-in-hand with the number of LGBT families who OFC has supported in coming and being out, being legally protected, and thereby changing the political landscape for marriage equality. That work is now redoubled by OFC and all of us."

Now in its 9th year, Night Out has established itself as the only event exclusively supporting LGBT families with children in the Bay Area. The general public is warmly invited to this adults-only event.
