12th Annual Cursive Is Cool Contest Launches Nationwide for Students in Grades K-7

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Jan. 30, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The American Handwriting Analysis Foundation (AHAF) announced today that its annual Cursive Is Cool® handwriting contest is now open to students in Kindergarten through Grade 7, encouraging young writers to express themselves creatively through cursive handwriting.

Now in its 12th year, the Cursive Is Cool® contest continues to grow in reach and enthusiasm, engaging students, teachers, and families worldwide. Children are invited to submit original cursive writing entries, which are judged on legibility, neatness, and creative content.

Writers Protest Fed Crackdown On Iowa University Writing Program

IOWA CITY, Iowa, March 10, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — In a letter delivered this week to Darren J. Beattie, a senior official at the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the acclaimed Todos Santos Writers Workshop (TSWW) decried the bureau’s recent cancellation of federal grants to the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa.

TSWW co-director Rex Weiner said “Since 1967, over 1,600 writers from more than 160 countries have participated in the University of Iowa’s renowned program. At home and abroad, IWP is a unique conduit for the world’s literatures, and the administration’s attack on this writing program is an attack on writers everywhere.”

IWP Director Christopher Merrill, who also serves as TSWW’s poetry workshop instructor, said in a UI statement that while the 58-year partnership with the federal government has ended, the university remains dedicated to the program’s mission to “promote mutual understanding through creative writing and literature.”

The federal grant to IWP of nearly $1 million “was roughly equal to what the writing program would have contributed to the U.S. economy next year,” according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen, noting the university’s statement that 90% of funds associated with the IWP’s federal grants are spent domestically, much of it in Iowa City, a UNESCO City of Literature.

TSWW co-director Jeanne McCulloch said, “As an international creative writing program with workshops in Mexico, France, and online globally, TSWW will continue to work with Christopher Merrill to explore ways to help advance IWP’s goals, and support writers around the world.”

About the Author:

After achieving a bachelor’s degree in history from Queen’s University, Lauren Gouin spent her twenties travelling and living in various countries, on various continents. She lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina for one year and then moved to London, England for three to work in digital marketing.

At the age of 27, her life took an unexpected turn when a mysterious, acute illness forced her to move home. Left with an unclear diagnosis, half a year’s recovery, and total uncertainty, she re-evaluated her life’s direction. The road to a more creative career path became a source of healing as she enrolled in Vancouver Film School’s screenwriting program, a space to explore her love for the vibrational capacity of story. Finding Erotica provides an expansive online presentation ranging from books and blogs to workshops and an online adult store. With "Skin Anthology" the site presents a boudoir video series aimed at exploring self-discovery, sexual exploration, empowerment, and wellness. "We initially set out to create a space that provided the kind of support my business partner was searching for but couldn't find. He was battling health issues that impacted his masculinity," expressed Sharonette Briggs, co-founder of Finding Erotica. "He felt alone but he wasn't. Thousands of men and women face health issues that hinder their sexuality. Finding Erotica had a vision to connect people with a mission of establishing an online community to discuss sexual issues, including those related to post-illness and post-injury intimacy. "We believe that sexual health must go beyond outdated notions of sex and relationships," adds Finding Erotica co-founder, Thomas McKenna. "One of the social media platforms that hosts our 'Skin Anthology' series shut us down recently, claiming that we violated their sex and nudity policy. When we investigated other boudoir videos on that same platform, we found them to be far more explicit than ours. What was the difference? Their videos featured white subjects, ours featured people of color. After three appeals detailing the discrepancy, we were finally reinstated. In a sense, what we must do is not just normalize diverse perspectives and confront stereotypes, but also humanize those who are too often left out of the mainstream."

New Writing Program Mobilizes Therapists to Help K-12 Teachers, Librarians and School Administrators

WASHINGTON, D.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Things They Carry Project (TTC), part of New Directions in Writing, an offshoot of the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis, was launched in April 2021 to offer writing for resilience workshops to frontline Covid healthcare workers suffering the trauma of working during the pandemic. The project has helped over 700 participants from the US, Asia, Brazil, the UK, and the Middle East.

TTC was then adopted by the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh, led by Anne Hallward, to offer a pathway to healing trauma for more than 1,100 refugees from 17 Middle East and Asian countries.

Now TTC has expanded to reach teachers, school librarians and counselors, and other school personnel, to help them face the stress of working through the pandemic and the increasing threat of school violence. The first workshop will launch August, 2022 and are staffed by therapists and some co-led by writers from across the country who have come together specifically to help our teachers and school staff.

A recent nationwide poll of K-12 employees have found that the vast majority reported feeling stressed (63%), high levels of burnout/fatigue (54%), and substantial anxiety (47%) at work due to the pandemic.

The Things They Carry workshops (https://www.thingstheycarryproject.org/) are led by experienced therapists skilled at working with people experiencing anxiety, stress and PTSD. If the title sounds familiar, that's intentional: it honors Tim O'Brien, the author of "The Things They Carried," a ground-breaking meditation on the Vietnam War, memory, and the redemptive power of storytelling.

The workshops are the brainchild of Kerry L. Malawista, Ph.D., a psychotherapist in private practice in Potomac, Maryland, and McLean, Virginia. Malawista is a co-chair of New Directions, which offers a postgraduate training program for clinicians, academics and writers who want to bring modern psychoanalytic perspectives to their work.

In launching the group for Frontline workers, Malawista said: "From them, I hear about the ghosts of the COVID deaths they carry, the patients they have treated, those who were lost to the virus and those who still haunt them. Like soldiers returning from war, they cannot close their eyes to all they have witnessed - the smells, sights and sounds of people who died while in their care. And sadly, like the soldiers that O'Brien memorialized, the ghosts often pursue them in their dreams.... Along with talk therapy, writing provides an effective pathway to process traumatic memory."

On a national scale our teachers, librarians and school administrators have also been first responders.

Participants will learn a technique called "writing for resilience," in which writing prompts will be offered to encourage them to explore their experiences in the classroom, helping them to delve into their meaning. Workshops will be held via Zoom.

Following the writing sessions, participants will have an opportunity to share what they have written, listen to other stories, respond to the group's writings, and explore their meaning in writing and conversation.

"Writing in the company of others has special benefits," Malawista said. "To have one's experiences witnessed and validated by other writers has been shown to relieve isolation and create a sense of solidarity.... Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the life stories they have heard in the course of their work, as well as on the ways they can keep themselves calm and strong."

About the City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department

The mission of the Cultural Affairs Department is to provide cultural programming that includes visual arts, digital media, music, film, theater, dance and public art for the enjoyment and enrichment of residents and visitors to Pompano Beach, Broward County, and the greater South Florida area. The department programs and manages the City's premiere cultural arts venues including the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, Ali Cultural Arts Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts Center, and the Blanche Ely House Museum. The department also oversees the City's Public Art Program and the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts' Our Town grant awarded to the Pompano Beach Crossroads place-making arts initiative.

Pompano Beach Arts is proud to announce that television icon Malcolm-Jamal Warner is joining the fourth annual "Exit 36 Slam Poetry Festival" as a celebrity judge. The famed star of "The Cosby Show" and current hit "The Resident" will also be performing his poetry at the festival and sharing thoughts about his career during an Artist Talk.
