A veteran performer whose voice has been heard on more than 50 film and television soundtracks — including “Avatar,” “Glee,” and “The Lion King” (2019) — McClain spent over 2,400 performances on the North American tour of Disney’s “The Lion King,” appeared in LA Opera’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Omar,” and has performed at three Academy Awards ceremonies. Though dramatized by McClain, this piece is the real testimony of his friend Walsh and her experiences in a system that complicated her health while she simultaneously felt the full gravity of diagnoses, false diagnoses, experimental treatments in Mexico, and the uncertain long days of increasing symptoms.

Starring in college musicals while attending Syracuse University, singing in the late 1960s up through the early 1980s, Sybil would go on to a lengthy, successful 32-year high school teaching career while simultaneously juggling jazz gigs as a member of Musicians Union Local 802.

Retiring in 1989 from New York City's public school system where she taught high school social studies and rose to the role of assistant principal and social studies chair, the then 55-year-old went on to her second act, as a conflict coach, building a business where she trained Fortune 500 managers skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, and diversity. Despite a busy schedule as a sought-after speaker at national conferences and corporate events, Ms. Evans always carved out time to seek out local jazz clubs and perform a few numbers at open mic nights.

After penning "HOT BUTTONS: How to Resolve Conflict and Cool Everyone Down" (Harper-Collins, 2000), she spent two years delighting audiences on TV, radio, and national book tours - and every now and then, because music was so dear to her, she offered listeners snippets of a song.

In 2008, at 74, an age where many are winding down into retirement, Sybil released her debut CD, "Can't Get Out of this Mood," creating a sensuous, playful and deeply romantic aura with her unique stamp on the six memorable pop-jazz tunes featured on the extended play disc.

Through the years, the engaging and outspoken songstress -- hailed by legendary night club proprietor Jan Wallman for her "class and sophistication" -- performed in an array of notable New York City jazz clubs including Wallman's famed club on Cornelia Street, Johnny's Pub, Horn of Plenty, the Lenox Lounge, Porter's, Cleopatra's Needle, and Trudi Mann's Butterfield 8. While many iconic nightclubs came and went with the city's changing landscape, nothing had so great an effect on music and nightlife like the Covid-19 pandemic, which left Evans without an audience for the past several years.

Spurred on by her monumental birthday in March 2024, Sybil knew it was time to return to publicly performing the music that had meant so much to her in years past. While her trademark bob hairstyle is now grey, her glamorous flair and passion for performing pop-jazz standards remains.

On April 24, the nonagenarian chanteuse performed in the piano lounge of Murray Hill's NH Collection Hotel to an invited audience of friends and locals, including members of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, which she has belonged to for over a decade. The evening included such classics as The Thrill is Gone, Almost Like Being in Love, and Without a Song with entertaining stories of her life and musical career peppered in between.

"Sybil has such a vibrant presence and is an inspiration to us all, really, anyone at any age. Her passion and love of entertaining is so evident, it really makes you think about anything you've procrastinated doing a little differently," said Linda Levine, longtime neighbor and fellow Murray Hill Neighborhood Association member.

"It felt so great to be back, so natural, as if I never took a break," explained Ms. Evans. "It was an amazing, exhilarating evening performing some of my favorite songs. I can't wait for our next performance," she added.

Sybil's next engagement will be on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the annual Park Avenue Day celebration featuring a street festival. Admission is free and the Sybil Evans Trio (with Grant Richards on piano and John Sims on bass) is slated to perform from 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Park Avenue at East 36th Street. The outdoor festival runs along Park Avenue from 34th to 40th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Michael Beers won the Norman G. Brooks Comedy Competition at the Hollywood Improv in 2005. He was also the previous winner of Funny Fest (Calgary Comedy Festival) and has opened for comedians like Gilbert Gottfried. He is a sought-after keynote speaker on topics like humor, disability advocacy, education and community building.

Jade Theriault is a Forbes-recognized comedian who combines provocative thought with moving furniture. Jade is a regular at Alameda Comedy Club, Punch Line SF, Cobbs Comedy Club, Tommy T's, and the San Jose Improv where she opened for Jesus Trejo. Festival credits include SF Sketchfest, The Art of Female Comedy Festival (Wichita, KS), Palm Springs International Comedy Festival and the Westside Comedy Festival in Santa Monica, where she was honored for Best Joke of the Night. Jade starred in Malic Almaya's "RUN! " (2018), featured in Jeff Giordano's "Romantic Chorus" (2021), and was on an episode of MTV "Decoded" (2018).

Nina G is a comedian, author of Stutterer Interrupted and co-author of Bay Area Stand-Up Comedy: A Humorous History. In May 2023 her album debuted at #1 in Comedy on iTunes and Amazon. Mean Dave, a favorite in the San Francisco Bay Area, hosts several CWDA shows. Dave is in his tenth year of addiction recovery, which he ingeniously weaves into his humor. He's a regular at Punch Line SF & Sacramento, Cobbs Comedy Club, Laughs Unlimited, SJ Improv and has opened for many notable comedians like Josh Blue, Big Jay Oakerson, and Eddie Pepitone as well as performed at clubs and colleges across the U.S.

Steve Danner's comedy career began as an audience member at a comedy club. The comedian on stage started riffing with him. Alan has embraced his "power" and is genuinely interested in others, meeting his fans face to face at Comicons and events around the world.

As Alan continued his career he worked prolifically in the realms of theater and musical theater. A natural beautiful pop/theater tenor he captivated audiences from Broadway to the West Coast. He directs, writes, choreographs, and even builds sets, designs lights and costumes. When living in Los Angeles he even had a small theater in his home.

Whilst having this strong artistic career, Alan is an equally devoted family man. Considered himself married to his husband long before it was "legal." Together they have raised two kids to adulthood who now have highly successful lives in their own right. Alan and his husband have had some major obstacles along the way. His husband, James has been a warrior while battling challenging health issues.

Alan continues a positive and hopeful outlook while managing to continue his theatre career. Like many actors met with early success things weren't always so easy and he had many bumps along the way. Alan was homeless in the winter in Chicago. He stayed positive and knew that there would soon be a way out. That came from a choreographer friend who offered to let him tag along to Virginia to work for a theme park for the summer. Alan came along for the ride and was soon cast in three of the shows for the year and found another passion working in the costume shop on his off time.

Alan has never felt discouraged or bitter. Instead, he stayed strong and steadfast and used his time of homelessness to create a CD entitled "Songs for Souls." This CD was recorded by homeless and street musicians at Sun Studios in Memphis. The proceeds went towards breaking the cycle of homelessness by getting tutors into shelters.

"The 'Songs for Souls' CD was a country music CD that was recorded was before they had any openly gay LGBTQ performers. People didn't know what to do with me," notes Alan Palmer. This out of the box uniqueness has led Alan to create many unique pieces of art culminating in the poignant inherent in "Chanteuse."

His fans appreciate his openness to LGBTQ rights and honor him for being an "out and open power ranger."

Comedians with Disabilities Act Change Attitudes Through Laughter

OAKLAND, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The founders and contributors of the Comedians with Disabilities Act (CWDA) are about to hit the road for its wildly popular show to span three states: Montana, Oregon and California. They're celebrating Disability Pride month in July, which also happens to coincide with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The various venues that will host the comedy troupe are thrilled to have them on the stage. One Montana venue in Butte even did a little renovation to accommodate the act by modifying its restroom to ensure accessibility - and laughter - for all.

"Thanks to the Elk Lodge for pulling through," Nina G,' says. "They saw the need to make this event and others they will have inclusive to everyone. CWDA is proud to be part of this change!"

The Comedians with Disabilities Act (CWDA) is a fabulous collection of comedians with disabilities, both seen and unseen, who share their humor and personal experiences. Overall, the tour is designed to bring authentic and traditionally unheard voices to the forefront.

It's the brainchild of comedian, Michael O'Connell, who started the group in 2010, and was later joined by Steve Danner and Nina G. "Laughter is the shortest distance between two people," he says. "And, comedy is a beautiful way to educate people without disabilities. When we laugh together we can find our commonalities."

Nina G, one of the first stuttering comedians, records debut solo album and live show at the Alameda Comedy Club

Since then, she's challenged the status quo of how people who stutter are perceived - onstage and off. So, in an industry that lacks speech diversity, Nina G's unique voice will record both her first solo comedy album and comedy special on March 9, 2023 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alameda Comedy Club located in her hometown. Since a child, Nina G's mission has been to make people laugh, but she never thought it possible. Her story details how she first abandoned her dreams, but then was able to embark on a journey and embrace her voice to culminate in a comedic career.

Like many successful comedians, the material conveyed through her humor is grounded in reality. Nina G's biting observations have made audiences laugh, worldwide. And her audience is large. The Stuttering Foundation reports that, globally, there are more that 70 million people who stutter and that stuttering impacts about one percent of the adult population; one in four of them is female.

She says that there are many famous people who stutter too. Marilyn Monroe, James Earl Jones, President Joe Biden, Samuel L. Jackson and King George VI, who was the focus of the movie "The King's Speech" all had or have issues with stuttering. While there's no cure for stuttering, Nina G makes it easy for people to understand and laugh about it.

An international keynote speaker, Nina G has learned that the issues impacting people with disabilities impact everyone. She hopes her album and comedy special will not only entertain, but inform, not just stutterers, but all.

In 2021, the British Stammering Association launched a campaign to raise awareness around stuttering in the media. "No diversity without disfluency" was one of the tags used to illustrate the need for stuttering voices among those in the mainstream.

"These voices shouldn't be heard only on stuttering awareness days or weeks, but across all media," Nina G says.

Gina Chin-Davis, the director of Nina's comedy special, and also a stutterer, says, "There's so much ignorance and misinformation about stuttering out there. With Nina G, you not only get comedy, you also get schooled on what stuttering really is and how to respectfully interact with people who stutter. It's exciting to collaborate with someone who can skillfully walk the line between entertainment and education."

"I came from Germany. I had long flowing hair. I looked like Prince on his first album - wasn't a good look in the hood," Pierre tells the audience. "My cousin would get his hair cut, I went to get mine 'did.' It was a difference. I couldn't go to a barbershop, none of my pictures was on the wall. I had to bring in a Right On Magazine with Janet Jackson from Different Strokes, I want this look."

Comedians with Disabilities Act Announces Northern California Tour: Author and Comic Nina G Hosts Comedy Troupe with Four Shows

Disability Awareness Month:

In the troupe's most recent news, the Comedians with Disabilities Act is announcing it will be touring Northern California, featuring four headliners across 4 different venues - just in time for the Disability Awareness Month of October. Author, comedian and Disability advocate Nina G, who has been with the Comedians with Disabilities Act since 2011, will host all four shows.

San Francisco Bay Area favorite at local clubs, Mean Dave, will headline Santa Cruz's Greater Purpose Brewing as part of the Santa Cruz Comedy Festival. Dave is in his 8th year of recovery from addiction, which he ingeniously weaves into his humor. "Not a lot of people know that being an addict in recovery is covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act," Mean Dave advocates.

Jade Theriault has performed multiple times with the Comedians with Disabilities Act and always brings down the house. As someone with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Jade uses a wheelchair, but that experience isn't the only topic she jokes about. "We came a long way from crawling up steps and hiding away in homes. I do think the mainstream is ready for Disabled comedy. We're too loud for the microphones." Jade adds, "I'm stoked to headline Alameda's wheelchair accessible stage on October 13."

Dan Smith, who headlines the Sacramento Comedy Spot on October 14, sums up why he and so many others on this tour are excited. "Getting to share a stage and headline a show of comedians that represent the humor and the diversity of people in the disability community is the culmination of my comedy career to date. David Vass’ One Man Show ‘What Could Go Wrong?’ Plays Six Performances at IndyFringe in August

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. /ScoopCloud/ -- 71-year-old gay elder David Vass, who participated in the birthing of the gay liberation movement from seedlings, performs his long-awaited one-man show, "What Could Go Wrong?" - a series of monologues based on over 70 diaries kept since Vass was seven years old, at IndyFringe.

A minimalist set reflects the intimate ambiance for his brutally honest, dramatic, funny, disturbing and at times cringe-worthy series of monologues culled from the diaries that he has kept for over 60 years, creating the bones of this extraordinary 'evening with', slightly condensed performance.

His one-man show, just prior to the onset of the pandemic, traveled to New York City, London, San Francisco and Australia. As the realities of the travel restrictions because of COVID were realized, David used that two-year period to rewrite the live version material and create the movie script. He also redesigned the play website, created his YouTube Television Channel, and legalized the production company ('I'm Afraid Knot LLC') into a non-profit 501(c) organization.

Fervently believing, given the content and candid honesty of this adults-only production, that "audience members should feel free to walk out, no offense taken by me," he also reminds the audiences of seeing the performances remembering his strong belief that our collective freedom of speech is under attack during these 'woke' times. This first half of his life can be brutal and repugnant, as life can be. There are performances where the coarse language used can come under attack, which he brushes off with "this is how white trash talked in those days."

David says, "My young brothers and sisters, Cis or Gay or however you identify from the current 14-pronoun, one adjective non-binary tribe of which I am a member, you've been handed rights, gay and straight and a large degree of equality and variety on a silver platter this past decade, and off the backs of us elders who remember how we got from the early 50's to now. With RvW overturned (making way for gay marriage and other human rights to be overturned as well), get ready to put your/our bodies on the streets again, blocking the streets again, making noise on the streets again and taking over the streets again."

He recalls at seven years of age (1957 and the year he outed himself) being asked if he was a 'butch or a fem', a few years later a 'top or a bottom', skip forward to 'are you bi'. These questions all asked in the 50's and with no resources for Vass to reference - he didn't know any of those words. He learned at 14 what fellatio meant when a uniformed policeman pulled him into an alley and demanded just that. His first sexual encounter was not warm and fuzzy but makes for a sad but fascinating monologue segment about that time in gay history when the police and the Mafia pulled the strings on what the gay tribe could or could not do, and the prices paid for that suppression.

Vass reflects, "This history, this collection of real stories needs to be told, to be kept alive in the first-person for generations of our tribe who follow. Please be clear, this is not a gay play, it is a series of experiences told in monologues with the details refreshed by my beloved diaries - a series of encounters and life-changing events I have lived. Yes, I happen to be gay, and I use this theatrical forum to tell the absolute truth as I know it, and it is from a gay perspective. How could it not be? This was all seen through my eyes. I believe the monologues are relatable to everyone, and this condensed 'evening with' also features stories about my time working with strippers, Broadway stars, movie legends, Grammy winning singers, assorted celebrities and so much more. We are all humans first, and then members of whatever 'tribe' we resonate to."

Bass Player Clint ‘Payback’ Sands Rallies Hip Hop Pioneers for Check Your Risk Campaign for Diabetes Awareness Month

"Thirty-four million people in the United States have diabetes," laments Clint "Payback" Sands, who has played bass on numerous rap albums for artists including Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg, noting recent stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) site. In his promotional video for the new CYR campaign, he further reveals, "One in five don't even know if they have it. I have type 2 diabetes. I was lucky. I only lost some toes. Hip-hop legend Biz Markie recently lost his life to complications related to type 2 diabetes. Knowing your risk can save your life."

The CYR video promotion seeks to encourage respondents to anonymously answer online eight questions devised by the CDC. They are then recommended to go for an annual exam that includes bloodwork and to take the results with them. They can also choose to be directed to online prevention programs and health challenges to assist them with proper nutrition, a variety of exercise programs, and the daily support and accountability they need to thrive.

"While working with the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), a couple of things became clear immediately," says Kenon, a Harlem-based certified lifestyle coach and fitness trainer who has personally stayed a step ahead of a 2012 prediabetes diagnosis. "People do not know they have prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Both are preventable and reversible through positive lifestyle changes in diet and exercise. I have been amazed by the health transformations of clients who have completed PLAN's DPP classes. But too few people know about these prevention programs and have access to them. We are trying to change that."

The Eight's Alicia Hollins, who recently shed over 100 pounds and has spent years serving the needs of marginalized families in California's Riverside county adds, "What people don't know about their personal risk can hurt them. We know the power of influencers to aid in our mission to eradicate diabetes. With the help of a growing number of celebrities and corporate leaders, we are looking to reach far more people in underserved communities this year. Perhaps, we'll even reach our one million goal!"

The Exit 36 Slam Poetry Festival was founded by Eccentrich, one of the top-ranking female poets in the country. She developed the platform to serve the community through educational, theatrical, and literary performances. The festival showcases local, regional, and nationally recognized poets, while educating and encouraging self-expression in local youth.

"PostMurder" is a parody of popular app-based delivery services, with a dark twist. I mean it hasn't paid off financially, of course, but it's great just to be a contender for an award," Ken Rudnick shared. The writer, director, creator and sometimes co-star just wants to make people laugh.

"I missed the sketches we did back in college, when I was part of LCC, Lapu the Coyote that Cares Theatre Company." The UCLA sketch troupe, founded in 1995 by Randall Park, Dave Lee and Derek Mateo was a place for students to put on original plays and sketch shows where underrepresented artists would be able to play starring roles. "As someone from the sketch comedy community I never expected to win anything, whether it be a contest or my parents' approval. And to be fair, we may not win," Ken said. "But as someone who's never been selected to play a sport, being an official selection still feels like a W." The sketch will go head-to-head with comedy from around the world on October 16, 2021 at the Alamo Drafthouse Mueller in Austin, Texas, vying for recognition as Battle of the Sketches' Live Round Champion.

"My favorite part was creating and throwing the fake blood," co-star Myra Vitela said when describing the process of making the sketch, "It was a mix of ketchup, hot sauce, and some other stuff. It smelled so bad and it got everywhere, but the end result was hilarious." PostMurder was edited by Judith Schomp. When informed of the official selection status, Gregory Rosenberg who co-stars with Rudnick and Vitela revealed, "I didn't plan on being shirtless so early in my sketch career, but it wasn't gratuitous or anything."

Ken enlisted a group of young Hollywood talent, including co-producer Erin Walsh, Cameron "Camera" Coulter, and composer Stefan Ecklund, and asked them to make sketches on a shoe-string budget during COVID.

The "Get Laughs" series stars Ken Rudnick and Frankie Kevich, and features Sean Choi, Hector Claros, Zef Husain, Billy Levin, Amber Li, Anne Mathews, Vik Ramen, Kaitlyn Ricci, Gregory Rosenberg, Jomi Segun-Williams, Andres Valdez, Myra Vitela, and Patrick Zhang.

"We're looking forward to being able to do live screenings and shows when COVID is over," Ken said. "But even while people are stuck at home, we're going to make them laugh, or cry trying."

A 2014 production, "The Set Slide" is being given new life via TikTok, where the "Set Slide Line Dance Challenge" is making its way across the world.

"'The Set Slide' is a continuation of the 'Bikers Shuffle.' which was dedicated to the motorcycle community," Big Mucci said. "After that came out, people in different sets, like clubs and social groups, kept coming up to me asking to make a dance for their clubs. I'm not in all those clubs, so this one is just dedicated to all the sets. I even put the roller skaters in there."

The motivation behind Big Mucci's music is to bring people of different backgrounds and ages together through line dancing.

"These groups of people love to do things together, and it's a brotherhood and camaraderie," he said. "'The Set Slide' came out in 2014, but 'Bikers Shuffle' has overshadowed it. That came out in 2009, and now it's 2020, so I think people have done it so much they are looking for something new."

The rebirth of "The Set Slide" is proven in its social media attention. "The Set Slide" video on Big Mucci's TikTok page has exploded to more than 460,000 views, while the page itself, launched in mid-April, has grown to nearly 32,000 followers and more than 100,000 likes. "The Set Slide" on Spotify has swelled to 7,761 streams, a growth of more than 5,000 percent in the last month, and monthly, his Spotify has nearly 25,000 listeners.

Big Mucci's YouTube and Facebook pages have also seen a rise, with 33,000 and 821,000 views, respectively.

"I put 'The Set Slide' on TikTok in the last week of April, and it just took on a whole new life," Big Mucci said. "I put up a clip of me and my partner leading the dance, and people started doing it themselves and reposting it.

"During the pandemic, I wanted to give people something to do at home with their families. Line dance is also a form of exercise, so I think people saw that then went to my YouTube and found more dances they could do together in their living rooms.

Big Mucci's ultimate goal with his music is to bring people together.

"The 'Trail Riders Shuffle' is also going viral," he said. "That one is for trail riders and saddle clubs, which are mostly people in the south that ride horses. It's big in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, and goes as far over as South Carolina. Thousands of them like to meet up, go on a horseback ride, then meet up in a field and party all night with music and vendors."

Big Mucci's other group-specific hits include his original debut in 1997, "Let Me See Dat Bootie Bounce," "The Birthday Slide," "ReBirth of the Shuffle," "The Mickey James," and the "Breast Cancer Awareness Shuffle."

"I operate by the belief that if people show me love, I show them love back," he said. "If I go to an event, I analyze what is going on and the people's lifestyle, then I incorporate that into a song.

"The music itself makes me come up with the dances when I start grooving to it, and I always make my dances to where everyone can do them - from the little kids to the elders. It's all about bringing unity and connecting everyone together."

After 23 years in the business, Big Mucci said it's amazing his career is still going.

"'Bootie Bounce' came out, and then 'Cleveland Shuffle' went global [and reached No. 44 on the top 100 Billboard Charts], and I've been doing this nonstop ever since," he said.

The music will continue this year, as Big Mucci's fifth studio album, "Big Mucci's Line Dance Movement, Part III," is set to drop by the end of 2020.

Born in Cleveland, the birthplace of Rock & Roll, Big Mucci served his country as a United States Marine. After returning home from serving his country, Big Mucci formed his line dance rap group 71 North Boyz in 1997. In 2004, he embarked on a successful solo career. Big Mucci is praised for the quality of his choreography, flow and beats for beginner and intermediate line dancing.

Prymrr Headlines at Alienstock Debuting New Songs

"I considered following Matty to Vegas," said Prymrr, "but when I learned the Vegas venue wasn't taking in any of the other artists from the original Alienstock Festival, and that Connie was on her own with the organizing, I reached out to all the artists and we all agreed to ban together and keep this unique festival alive."

Alienstock, organized by West, is a one-of-a kind festival held in the middle of the Nevada dessert in the town nearest to Area 51, the infamous government research center rumored to study UFOs and aliens.

The Alienstock Festival atmosphere will be very different that the glitz of a Vegas show. Artists and attendees will be at the festival for a weekend of stars, camping, music, art, and communing over the unknown of aliens and UFOs. Prymrr's upbeat rap songs will add an atmosphere of positive celebration, unity, and out of this world hype.

The cast also includes Keilholtz, himself a Frederick native, along with Bru Ajueyitsi and Amanda Shafer. Mr. Ajueyitsi is from Washington D.C. and Ms. Shafer is from Frederick.

Yubo Fernandez, 39, born and raised in a neighborhood with significant poverty at Dominican Republic, became a sponsor child of Plan International USA since age 8 by Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island. Today Yubo is an emerging multi-talented artist who's been recognized local and internationally for her work as an actress, producer and filmmaker.

In 2017 she visited Wheeler school to meet their sponsors who she called "angels" and gave thanks.
