Dryades YMCA Partners with the Recirculating Farms Coalition

NEW ORLEANS, La. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Dryades YMCA is partnering with the Recirculating Farms Coalition (RFC), a sustainable farming and food justice advocacy organization. RFC will relocate its farm - Growing Local NOLA - to YMCA-owned land on Jackson Avenue, where it crosses Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in Central City, just a few steps from the Dryades Y building.

"We've wanted a community garden for some time so that our Central City youth and neighbors can strengthen their sense of community, be more active, and ultimately access affordable fresh produce. This an ideal partnership - RFC has the skills and experience, and we have the space and opportunity to further our work to address youth food insecurity," said Alicia Oliver, Operations and Mission Advancement Director of the Dryades Y.

The new farm will provide fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs and more for YMCA snacks and meals, classes and youth food pantry. RFC's team will also collaborate with YMCA staff on building a community green space with classes in gardening, health-supportive cooking and holistic wellness.

"We are so excited to be working with the Dryades YMCA," says Marianne Cufone, Executive Director of the Recirculating Farms Coalition. "This partnership will bring locally grown, healthy food to children through seniors in the YMCA programs and also offer a wide range of food and farm related classes and events to the Central City neighborhood and beyond."

Work on the new growing spaces is already underway with a Dow Promise grant and a donation of raised garden beds by Folgers Coffee. The organizations have volunteer days planned to help with preparing the site and planting. Classes and events should begin early in the new year.

Cabrini High School and the American Italian Cultural Center Co-hosts Fundraising Gala in Honor of Saint Frances Cabrini’s Contributions to New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. /ScoopCloud/ -- The influence of Saint Frances Cabrini, the first American citizen Saint, and her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart has been felt in New Orleans since 1892, when Mother Cabrini first arrived to help Italian immigrants. However, her work encompassed people from all sections and backgrounds of the city. Besides the daily work of helping the unfortunate, Saint Cabrini established two orphanages, the larger of which became Cabrini High School in 1959.

Mother Cabrini's commitment to helping all people in need was unrelenting. She founded 67 missions on three continents in 37 short years which included orphanages, schools and hospitals. Cabrini High School stands today as a testament to her vision: "to educate the minds and hearts" of the students. The school's award-winning college preparatory curriculum and staff encourages students of diverse races, creeds, nationalities, and socio-economic backgrounds to discover their God-given talents through a commitment to academic excellence, spiritual development, and social growth.

In conjunction with the celebration of Cabrini High School's 60th anniversary, the school has launched the "Continuing Her Legacy" capital campaign - the most determined fundraising effort in Cabrini's history. As a part of this campaign, Cabrini is co-hosting, with the American Italian Cultural Center (AICC), a fundraising gala, Promenade on Esplanade to honor the legacy of St. Frances Cabrini and her contribution to the entire New Orleans community.

The gala will be held in the Cabrini High School Esplanade Courtyard located at 3400 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans on November 2, 2019 from 7 - 9 p.m.

The gala will include Italian cuisine, live jazz entertainment, tours of the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Exhibit Room, St. Frances Cabrini's living quarters, and Sacred Heart Chapel where she prayed.

Mother Cabrini said, "The greatest heritage to a young girl is a good education." Funds raised during the event will be used for improvements to the school's campus to enhance the educational environment along with the creation of a Fine Arts Center.

The event will be attended by notable alumnae, donors, and guests. The one-day event will include the Women in Sustainability Empower (WISE) breakfast, the Green School Challenge workshop, educational sessions, the Sustainability Keynote luncheon and a Tulane LEED building tour. New this year is the GreenMatters series designed to showcase how environmentally conscious business leaders in the Crescent City are working to make festivals, dining, and tourism greener and safer.

The WISE breakfast keynote speaker is award winning architect, Ursula Emery McClure. McClure is a professor of architecture at Louisiana State University, founding partner at emerymcclure architecture, and senior project designer at architecture and design firm, Perkins & Will. In 2018, McClure was named on ArchDaily's list of 13 leading female architects from around the world. Her keynote topic is, A Career of Coastal Concern.

Justin Ehrenwerth, President and CEO of The Water Institute of the Gulf will be the event's keynote speaker during the Sustainability luncheon. After several years of service in key roles at organizations including the Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council, Chief of Staff to the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Assistant Counsel to the President where he took the lead on Deepwater Horizon litigation for the White House, Ehrenwerth continues his fight to help coastal and deltaic communities prepare for the future. His keynote address will focus on how the region can use nature-based solutions to protect critical industry infrastructure, promote community resilience, create environmental benefits and sequester carbon.

Between the venue, local authorities and ourselves we thought the best thing to do was postpone it and search for a viable weekend to host it. Luckily, August 24th was available for all!"

The focus of this year's conference is particularly timely as it addresses issues of behavioral health workforce shortages and challenges.

"The current behavioral health workforce is characterized as being part of an aging population with high turnover rates, maldistributed, and inadequately compensated."

At the same time, behavioral health systems are evolving so that there is a priority on the delivery of evidence-based services, a recovery orientation, quality and accountability, and integration with primary care. These system inadequacies have resulted in shifting the responsibility for care to other social service and law enforcement agencies. The future for the behavioral health workforce is dire.

So, the question is: What is to be done to address this behavioral health workforce disaster?

The National Dialogues on Behavioral Health Conference which begins Monday, October 29, will address the following questions:

* How can one "resource shift" and better utilize the current behavioral healthcare workforce?
* How can technology and telehealth be used as workforce extenders, especially in rural areas?
* How can the use of peer specialists, family caregivers, school counselors, primary care providers, and providers in the child welfare and criminal (and juvenile) justice systems be optimized?
* How can effective behavioral health community collaborative entities be formed?
* What are effective funding and reimbursement strategies to support needed workforce initiatives?

The pre-conference program, which will be offered on Sunday, October 28, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., is dedicated to the innovations in artificial intelligence and its use to support and/or provide increased access to behavioral health care.
