The statewide guide features independent cheese shops that showcase California cheeses, providing consumers with an easy way to explore local destinations, meet knowledgeable cheesemongers and discover the state’s award-winning artisan and farmstead cheeses.

Developed through a partnership between Real California Milk and the Cheese Trail, the guide expands opportunities for consumers to connect with California’s vibrant cheese community and the retailers who help bring specialty cheeses to market.

“California is home to an extraordinary community of cheesemakers producing world-class cheeses that reflect the innovation, craftsmanship and agricultural heritage of our state,” said Jennifer Giambroni, Vice President of Communications for the California Milk Advisory Board. “Independent cheese shops play an essential role in helping consumers discover these exceptional products, learn the stories behind them and build connections with local food producers. The Discover! California Cheese Shops Guide is designed to make those experiences more accessible while supporting the retailers who champion California cheese every day.”

California is America’s leading dairy state and home to one of the nation’s most dynamic artisan cheese communities. More than 50 California cheesemakers produce hundreds of varieties of specialty, artisan and farmstead cheeses, earning recognition at prestigious national and international competitions. From traditional European-inspired styles to innovative new creations, California cheeses reflect the state’s diverse landscapes, cultures and commitment to quality.

The Cheese Trail was founded in 2011 by Vivien Straus to connect cheese lovers with the cheesemakers, farms and retailers behind America’s cheese culture. What began as a regional Sonoma and Marin County initiative has grown into a statewide network that helps consumers discover cheesemakers, creameries, retailers and cheese-focused experiences throughout California, with expansion efforts underway nationwide.

“Cheese shops are among the most important ambassadors for artisan cheese,” said Vivien Straus, founder of the Cheese Trail. “These retailers introduce consumers to new flavors, educate them about cheesemaking traditions and connect them directly to the people and places behind the cheese. We’re excited to partner with Real California Milk on this guide to help more people discover the incredible cheese culture that exists throughout California and to support the independent businesses that make it thrive.”

The Discover! California Cheese Shops Guide highlights destinations throughout Northern, Central and Southern California, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore local communities through cheese. The guide complements the Cheese Trail’s broader mission of connecting consumers with cheesemakers, farms and retailers while helping strengthen California’s specialty cheese economy.

Alder Springs Vineyard to Conclude Farming After 2026 Harvest

Owner Stuart Bewley announces the decision to cease vineyard operations in the face of industry downturn

LAYTONVILLE, Calif., June 26, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — After 33 years as one of California’s most singular and pioneering vineyards, Alder Springs Vineyard, the remote, high-elevation Mendocino County site, announced today that the 2026 harvest will be the last vintage farmed under founder and owner Stuart Bewley. After more than three decades, Bewley will step back from financing the vineyard’s farming and will cease supplying grapes to the market after the 2026 season.

Alder Springs Vineyard, Terraces block
Image caption: Alder Springs Vineyard, Terraces block.

The decision follows a multi-year contraction across the wine industry. The downturn has hit growers hardest, who bear the fixed costs of farming regardless of demand.

“We can’t take a year off the vineyard. We’ve got to prune, water, and take care of it, and a huge amount of that is manual labor,” explained Bewley. “At some point, the numbers have to pencil. Right now, they don’t — not because of the vineyard, but because the market for this kind of fruit isn’t there yet.”

First planted in 1993, Alder Springs, whose fruit has supplied many of California’s most acclaimed and adventurous wineries, became known for doing what few believed possible. Bewley pioneered organic frost protection to grow high-quality fruit on a rugged mountain site at elevations between 1,700 and 2,700 feet; committed to no-till farming from the outset to protect the salmon-bearing streams that run through the property; and spent 15 years transitioning the vineyard to regenerative practices. Today, it grows 43 commercial varieties — among them rarities in California such as Petite Arvine, Mencía, Counoise, Pelaverga and Aligoté — alongside ongoing trials of hundreds of variety, clone, and rootstock combinations.

Over the years, Alder Springs fruit appeared in a wide range of highly rated wines from dozens of significant California producers.

Looking ahead, Bewley will redirect his focus to other profitable enterprises, including his carbon-sequestration company, Carbon Storage Solutions LLC, land-stewardship work, and his role on the board of the Pacific Forest Trust. Some members of the Alder Springs team will transition to those businesses alongside him; the vineyard is assisting others in finding new opportunities in the industry.

Bewley will retain ownership of the ranch with no intention to sell.

“We have loved this business and working with each of the producers who came here,” said Bewley. “The wine industry has had a major downturn, and it hit them. Had our customers been able to weather it, they would have kept buying fruit, and we’d still be growing.”

Bewley and his team will farm through the current season with the same commitment that has defined the vineyard from the start.

“We will be making 2026 our very best vintage in our 33 years in this business,” said Bewley.

About Alder Springs Vineyard

Founded in 1993 by Stuart Bewley, Alder Springs Vineyard is one of California’s most distinctive high-elevation winegrowing estates. Known for pioneering regenerative mountain viticulture and an exceptional diversity of grape varieties, it has supplied fruit to many of California’s most respected wineries for more than three decades, earning a reputation well beyond its size. New Book ‘The Super Seeders: How Plant Scientists Are Racing to Protect Global Food Security Amid Climate Change and Disease’ Explores the Hidden Global Revolution in Food Security

KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 7, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Author and entrepreneur Miles Hillmann announces the release of his new book, “The Super Seeders: How Plant Scientists Are Racing to Protect Global Food Security Amid Climate Change and Disease” (ISBN: 978-1834188355, released May 2, 2026 by Tellwell Publishing), a deeply researched and compelling account of the global scientific effort to safeguard the world’s food supply through advances in plant genetics, breeding, and genomic science.

New Book 'The Super Seeders: How Plant Scientists Are Racing to Protect Global Food Security Amid Climate Change and Disease'
Image caption: New Book ‘The Super Seeders: How Plant Scientists Are Racing to Protect Global Food Security Amid Climate Change and Disease.’

In “The Super Seeders: How Plant Scientists Are Racing to Protect Global Food Security Amid Climate Change and Disease,” Hillmann draws on first-hand accounts from scientists, breeders, and gene bank curators working at the forefront of agricultural innovation. The book traces the interconnected systems that underpin modern food security—from global gene banks preserving rare crop diversity, to international research centres and treaties enabling the exchange of genetic material, to the plant breeders translating scientific breakthroughs into resilient, high-yielding crops for farmers worldwide.

At the heart of the book is a pressing global challenge: climate change, population growth, emerging crop diseases, and geopolitical instability are placing unprecedented strain on global food systems. As noted by World Food Prize Laureate Dr. Geoff Hawtin OBE, over 2 billion people currently lack access to sufficient and nutritious food, making agricultural innovation more urgent than ever.

Hillmann’s work highlights how plant geneticists are using rapidly advancing genomic technologies to unlock hidden traits within crops—developing varieties that are more drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and productive. The book also explores how innovations from the Green Revolution to modern gene editing have shaped today’s agricultural landscape, while acknowledging that crop yield gains are now plateauing and new scientific approaches are essential.

A central question raised throughout the book is whether this genetic and technological revolution in agriculture will reach the 70 percent of Africans who still depend on subsistence farming—an issue that may determine the future of global food security itself.

“This book is based on the voices and experiences of the scientists, curators, and breeders who are quietly reshaping agriculture from the ground up,” said Hillmann. “Their work is not theoretical—it is about ensuring that people everywhere can continue to eat in a changing and uncertain world.”

Endorsements highlight the book’s scientific clarity and global relevance. Dr. Geoff Hawtin OBE describes it as a “captivating book” that both explains the science behind critical agricultural innovations and celebrates the people driving them forward. Plant molecular biologist Professor Mark Guiltinan praises the book as “a timely, deeply researched, and compellingly readable account” that connects the molecular science of plant genetics with the human systems required to turn innovation into impact.

Garry Kuhn, agronomy and fertilizer industry specialist, reflects on the evolution of modern agriculture, noting that while conventional plant breeding drove the Green Revolution, today’s yield plateaus and disease pressures require continued innovation in plant genetics and crop science.

About the Author

Miles Hillmann is a lifelong entrepreneur whose career bridges scientific innovation and applied industrial development. His early work in agricultural research in Uganda during the final days of the Idi Amin era, and later experience in regions facing food insecurity, shaped his long-standing interest in food systems and agricultural resilience. He has since founded and led companies in novel feed ingredients, organic materials analysis, oil and chemical spill control, avian and swine flu prevention and flood control systems. “The Super Seeders” draws together decades of field experience and scientific engagement, telling the story of the global plant genetics revolution through the voices of those driving it.

US Farm Vision, Innovative Grain, and Gate 39 Launch Data-Driven Framework for Grain Industry Growth

US Farm Vision's new model helps grain elevators and cooperatives quantify market opportunity without exposing sensitive data

OMAHA, Neb., April 29, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — US Farm Vision has introduced a data collaboration framework that addresses a critical challenge in the grain industry: identifying untapped market potential while maintaining strict data privacy. Developed in partnership with Innovative Grain and Gate 39, the model enables grain elevators, cooperatives, and processors to combine multiple data sources and analytical capabilities without requiring them to expose farmer relationships or operational data.

Chris Sidles, US Farm Data
Image caption: Chris Sidles, US Farm Data.

The framework recognizes what grain companies already know: significant market opportunity exists within their draw areas. The gap isn’t identifying the opportunity. It’s quantifying it safely.

“Grain companies understand their markets, but they lack a clear, secure way to measure what they’re missing,” said Chris Sidles, US Farm Vision. “This framework closes that gap and gives them the confidence to act on what they discover.”

The approach enables organizations to:

  • Quantify true market potential within defined geographies
  • Identify the gap between current business and available opportunity
  • Refine marketing, origination, and service strategies with greater precision
  • Retain full control over proprietary and customer data

The collaboration reflects a broader industry shift toward integrated decision-making, where specialized partners work together to generate insights that isolated efforts cannot deliver. US Farm Vision provides enterprise-scale data processing and modeling; Innovative Grain brings advanced analytics and grain market expertise; Gate 39 contributes agricultural marketing and sales strategy via CRM and their Anthem Ag website solution. Combined, they offer grain companies a coordinated pathway from fragmented data to unified, actionable strategy.

Since 1987, within the cool, fog-kissed Carneros AVA, the grower-producer winery has been committed to caring for the soil, the vines, and the people who tend to them as an inseparable part of crafting wines of the highest quality.

“When we installed our first solar array two decades ago, we were at the forefront of renewable energy adoption in the wine industry,” notes CEO Remi Cohen. “Today, our advanced microgrid technology represents the next generation of energy independence and environmental stewardship. As climate challenges intensify, Domaine Carneros continues its commitment to caring for the land as intentionally as we care for our wines, reducing our carbon footprint and raising the bar on renewable energy.”

REVOLUTIONARY MICROGRID TECHNOLOGY

In partnership with Schneider Electric who was named the world’s most sustainable company in 2025 by Time magazine, Domaine Carneros deployed the EcoStruxure™ Microgrid in 2023, doubling the winery’s energy generation capacity. The system integrates 614 upgraded solar panels generating 427 kilowatts of clean energy with a 250KVA battery backup and generator. This infrastructure ensures uninterrupted operations during increasingly common power outages due to wildfires and severe weather events, and the system stores excess solar energy generated during the day for use in the evenings or early mornings during peak demand.

The microgrid’s intelligent controls leverage AI to optimize energy usage in real time, resulting in significant operational benefits:

  • Self-generation of up to 70% of energy for winery operations
  • Annual savings of approximately $150,000
  • Ability to operate in “island mode” during grid outages
  • Solar power production of 740MWh in the last year, equivalent to taking 110 cars off the road

The system also powers four electric vehicle charging stations for guests, seamlessly integrating green technology throughout the visitor experience.

AWARD-WINNING ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES

Domaine Carneros’ comprehensive approach to sustainability has earned numerous prestigious recognitions, including:

  • 2025 Napa Chamber of Commerce Sustainable Business of the Year
  • 2025 RISE Leadership Award for Energy Efficiency and Savings
  • 2024 City of Napa Leadership Recycling Award
  • 2023 RISE Leadership Award for waste prevention and supply chain greening
  • 2020 Napa Climate NOW! Climate Champion in the Business Category
  • 2019 California Green Medal Business Award

The winery maintains multiple environmental certifications, including California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, Napa Green Vineyard & Winery, Bay Area Green Business, and Fish Friendly Farming.

BEYOND ENERGY: COMPREHENSIVE SUSTAINABILITY

Domaine Carneros implements sustainability throughout its operations:

  • Diverting an average of 85% of solid waste from landfills through composting, recycling, and reuse
  • Recycling and reusing water used in production to irrigate estate vineyards
  • Reusing 25% of packaging materials annually, saving over 1.2 million pieces since 2010
  • Practicing Integrated Pest Management with owl boxes and beneficial cover crops
  • Composting approximately 450,000 pounds of food waste since 2013
  • Launching on-site grape pomace composting trials in 2025, expanding zero-waste ambitions to vineyard byproducts
  • Implementing lighter weight bottles to reduce shipping impacts
  • Offsetting carbon emissions from wine club shipment

“Domaine Carneros was built on a Taittinger family tenet rooted in their legendary commitment to estate ownership, that the finest wines begin with the healthiest land,” says CEO Remi Cohen. “That belief drives every decision we make in the vineyard and beyond, from how we manage water and energy to how we think about our responsibility to this land and our community.”

Global Old Vine Registry Surpasses 10,000 Vineyards – A Major Milestone in Documenting the World’s Historic Vines

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 26, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — In just three years, a global effort to document the world’s oldest vineyards has reached a major milestone. The Old Vine Registry, the world’s leading public database dedicated to historic vineyards, announced today that it has surpassed 10,000 registered vineyards worldwide, achieving a goal originally set for 2027 more than a year ahead of schedule.

The Old Vine Registry
Image caption: The Old Vine Registry.

Launched in 2023 as a crowdsourced effort to identify and document living vineyards older than 35 years, the registry now spans 42 countries, representing more than 40,900 hectares of historic plantings and 1,144 grape varieties.

The project was created with a simple premise: we cannot protect what we do not first identify.

“Old vineyards are among the wine world’s most valuable agricultural and cultural assets,” said Alder Yarrow, Architect and Manager of the Old Vine Registry. “But until recently there has been no global effort to systematically document where they are, what they contain, and how old they are. The registry exists to change that.”

The initiative aligns closely with the goals of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), which in October 2024 adopted Resolution OIV-VITI 703-2024, formally defining “old vines” as those 35 years or older and recommending that wine regions promote the cataloguing of historic vineyards.

“When we launched the registry, I thought there might be tens of thousands of old-vine vineyards worth cataloguing around the world,” Yarrow said. “As the data has come in, it’s become clear that the real number may be in the hundreds of thousands. Reaching 10,000 vineyards this quickly shows how much momentum there is across the global wine community to document and celebrate these historic plantings.”

The registry has grown rapidly through contributions from growers, researchers, importers, and regional wine organizations around the world. Importers including Skurnik Wines, Becky Wasserman & Co., and Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant have helped document historic vineyards within their portfolios, while regional bodies such as Wines of Moldova, the Armenian Wine and Vine Foundation, and the Empordà Denomination of Origin have contributed data from their regions.

Beyond documenting vineyards, the project aims to raise awareness of their value and encourage their preservation.

“When vineyards are identified and documented, they become visible,” Yarrow said. “And when something becomes visible, it becomes something people value, celebrate, and ultimately protect.”

The 10,000th vineyard recently added was Beaumont Wine Estate’s Hope Vineyard, in the Bot River region of South Africa, planted to Chenin Blanc in 1974. With this milestone now reached, the Old Vine Registry is inviting growers, regions, and researchers worldwide to continue contributing vineyards to the database. New targets for vineyard counts remain to be set.

“We want every region with historic vineyards to be represented,” Yarrow said. “The more we document these places, the stronger the case becomes for preserving them.”

The registry can be explored, and vineyards submitted, at https://www.oldvineregistry.org/.

About the Old Vine Registry:

The Old Vine Registry is the world’s first and largest database cataloguing vineyards aged more than 35 years of age around the world. The registry aims to be a resource for the wine industry, academia, and consumers to discover and learn about old vineyards, as well as a conduit for the sale of wines made from these vineyards.

Originally started by Jancis Robinson, the Registry launched as a crowd-sourced, public resource on the web in June of 2023, funded by a donation from Jackson Family Wines and managed by Alder Yarrow of Vinography.Com. The site is owned by The Old Vine Conference, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building a credible category for old vine wines and a community that sustains and communicates its value.

As of 2026, the registry includes more than 10,000 vineyards across 42 countries, representing over 40,900 hectares of historic plantings.

Adonna Wines Makes Its California Debut This Spring, Celebrating Heritage, Resilience, and the Art of the Moment

Japanese American biochemist-turned-vintner Donna Kato opens her spring allotment on March 20 - the first day of spring with a vision rooted in the Japanese philosophy of Ichigo Ichie

HEALDSBURG, Calif., March 20, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — On March 20, the first day of spring, Adonna Wines officially opens its spring allotment to the California market. Founded by Donna Kato, a Japanese American biochemist who left the world of science to tend the land and make wine of uncommon elegance, Adonna Wines is an allotment-only label available exclusively to mailing list members. The spring release includes the 2023 Pinot Noir, the 2024 White Pinot Noir, and the 2024 Chardonnay — each a reflection of a vineyard, and a founder, devoted to beauty, intention, and the irreplaceable nature of each moment.

Photo caption: Donna Kato, Proprietor Adonna Wines in the Canfield Vineyard, Russian River Valley, CA.

A SPRING RELEASE ROOTED IN MEANING

The timing of Adonna’s spring launch is no coincidence. March 20 carries resonance for Donna Kato both as the vernal equinox — a season of awakening and renewal — and as an echo of the Japanese tradition of hanami, the centuries-old custom of gathering beneath cherry blossoms as they bloom and fall, transient and luminous. At the heart of Adonna’s philosophy is the Japanese concept of Ichigo Ichie— “one time, one meeting” — a reminder that every shared moment is singular and will not come again, embedded in the wines, the label, and the way Donna approaches her craft.

“I wanted the wines to carry that feeling,” says Kato. “That a glass poured with the people you love is something that can never be exactly replicated.”

FROM BIOCHEMIST TO VINTNER: LIVING THE DREAM

Donna Kato’s path to wine was not a straight line — it was a life deliberately reimagined. A trained biochemist, Kato brought her analytical rigor, her reverence for nature, and a family legacy of farming — rooted in a great-grandfather who farmed peaches— to bear on one of California’s most treasured wine regions: the Russian River Valley. Her experience with breast cancer deepened her commitment to living with presence and purpose — the founding of Adonna Wines is, in every sense, the embodiment of that resolve. Kato holds a master’s degree in Viticulture & Enology from UC Davis, bringing scientific rigor alongside personal conviction to every vintage.

In December 2025, Forbes featured Kato in a profile by Chelsea Davis titled “From Heritage to Harvest: Japanese American Winemaker Donna Kato Debuts Adonna Wines.” The April 2026 issue of The Tasting Panel Magazine will profile Kato in a feature called “Women Who Raise the Bar in Wine,” in which Publisher Meridith May awards the 2023 Adonna Pinot Noir a score of 95 points. Kato also earned a Silver Medal at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in March 2026 for its 2023 Russian River Pinot Noir.

CANFIELD VINEYARD: REGENERATIVE FARMING IN THE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

The backbone of Adonna Wines is Canfield Vineyard, a five-clone, 100% Pinot Noir estate in the southern reaches of the Russian River Valley, influenced by the Petaluma Gap and the Pacific Ocean — one of the coolest and most distinctive sites in the appellation. Originally planted in 2009 under the stewardship of Judy Jordan of J Vineyards, the vines now belong to Donna Kato, who is grafting two acres to Chardonnay this year as her vineyard program evolves.

Upon acquiring the vineyard, Donna began a comprehensive restoration program grounded in regenerative farming principles — an effort that has become central to Adonna’s identity. The vineyard is Certified California Sustainable through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.

At Canfield, 40 Navajo sheep graze the cover crop under the watch of vineyard manager Cody Garzini and a Maremma sheepdog named Honey, who keeps a devoted daily vigil over the flock. The wines from Canfield are crafted by talented winemaker Ashley Holland, who trained under the legendary Bob Cabral at Three Sticks Wines. Adonna also sources Pinot Noir from Eden Vineyard and Chardonnay from the esteemed Martaella Vineyard.

THE WINES

The spring 2026 allotment features three wines, available March 20 – May 1:

2023 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley | $85 | 95 Points, Tasting Panel Magazine

2024 White Pinot Noir, Canfield Vineyard, Russian River Valley | $65

2024 Chardonnay, Martaella Vineyard, Russian River Valley | $85

Members of the Allotment List may purchase up to six bottles total — two of each wine with a spring and fall offering. Wines are available exclusively in California, with expansion to other markets planned. In fall 2026, Adonna will release the first Estate Pinot Noir from Canfield Vineyard. To join the allotment list, visit adonnawines.com.

A COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS, CULINARY EXCELLENCE, AND COMMUNITY

From the outset, Adonna Wines has expressed itself through cultural engagement as much as viticulture. Kato collaborated with celebrated Japanese calligraphy and performance artist Aoi Yamaguchi, whose work — described by the New York Times as “transcendent” — animates the brand’s visual language. On March 20, Adonna serves as a Sponsor of the Fork2Film Festival in St.Helena, a fitting celebration as the spring allotment opens. Adonna has also supported the San Francisco Symphony’s Lunar New Year Concert (February 28) and the James Beard Foundation Taste America Bay Area event (March 1) — underscoring Kato’s commitment to excellence in both the culinary and cultural worlds.

ABOUT ADONNA WINES

Adonna Wines is a small-production, allotment-only label founded by Donna Kato, a Japanese American biochemist-turned-vintner. Rooted in the Certified Sustainable Canfield Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, Adonna produces Pinot Noir, White Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay of refined elegance and deep site expression. The brand name is drawn from the Latin donna — “a lady” — woven together with founder Donna Kato’s own name, and its wines are available exclusively to members of the Adonna Allotment List. Wines are released twice yearly, in spring and fall, and are currently available in California only. For more information or to join the mailing list, visit https://www.adonnawines.com/. La Belle Farms and Hudson Valley Foie Gras to Challenge Recent Appellate Ruling That Limits State Review of NYC’s Foie Gras Ban

Upstate Duck Farmers Will Ask New York's Highest Court to Restore Earlier Ruling that Protected Farm Practices and Farmers' Livelihoods

FERNDALE, N.Y., March 18, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — La Belle Farms, a fourth-generation, family owned and operated duck farm located in Ferndale, N.Y., announced today it will appeal the recent decision by the Appellate Division, Third Department, which ruled that the State Department of Agriculture and Markets misapplied state law when it blocked New York City’s 2019 ban on the sale of foie gras (Local Law 202).

Last week, the appeals court found that the state agency’s protection of La Belle’s farm operations went beyond what the statute allows. The farm said it respects the court system and will seek review by the New York Court of Appeals to resolve the competing priorities at issue – NYC’s animal-welfare concerns and New York State’s longstanding policy to support agriculture as a vital part of the economy.

“Today’s ruling is a setback, but we will not stop fighting for our right to farm and to sell our product,” said Sergio Saravia. “This appeal is about more than foie gras; it’s about protecting family farms and the many jobs and small businesses that depend on them. We’ll be asking the Court of Appeals to clarify how state agricultural protection should operate so farmers aren’t left vulnerable to local measures that reach well beyond city limits.”

La Belle Farms is a fourth-generation, family-run duck farm on 40 acres in Sullivan County, NY. Founded by the Saravia family in 1999, La Belle is one of the few farms nationwide producing foie gras and premium duck meat, and it supports the regional economy by employing hundreds of local workers and partnering with area businesses.

“Agriculture depends on predictable and consistent policies so farmers can operate with certainty,” notes Marcus Henley, manager of Hudson Valley Foie Gras, a premier New York foie gras producer. “It becomes difficult when different municipalities adopt their own restrictions on products that are otherwise legal under state law.”

Edward Phillips of Keane & Bean, PC, who represents La Belle Farms, added: “We will ask the Court of Appeals to review the record and uphold the Commissioner’s determination. The Appellate Division held that the Commissioner was powerless to stop the City from imposing a sales ban that was admittedly designed to restrict a farming practice. That ruling, which is unprecedented and leaves all farmers across the state vulnerable to similar sales bans, should be reviewed by New York’s highest court.”

While the Appellate Division ruled against the agency’s interpretation, La Belle Farms notes that a separate injunction from another case currently prevents the city from enforcing Local Law 202.

Old Vine Registry Nears 9,400 Vineyards as 1991 Plantings Become Eligible

Volunteer researchers and leading wine importers fuel rapid expansion of global old-vine database

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 13, 2026 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Old Vine Registry, the world’s largest and most authoritative database of historic vine plantings, has entered the new year with 9,393 registered vineyards across 42 countries, reflecting a surge of new contributions over the past twelve months.

The Old Vine Registry
Image caption: The Old Vine Registry.

With the turn of the calendar year, vineyards planted in 1991 have now reached the 35-year threshold and are newly eligible for inclusion. Producers and growers are encouraged to submit qualifying vineyards at https://www.oldvineregistry.org/.

Much of the Registry’s recent growth has been driven by volunteer researchers and the direct contribution of vineyard data from leading wine importers, including Skurnik Wines, Becky Wasserman & Co., Winebow, and others. Their participation has significantly deepened coverage in several of Europe’s most historically important regions, including the Rhône Valley, Burgundy, and Bordeaux.

This growth has also been supported by the Heritage Vine Hunt Contest, an ongoing global initiative encouraging the public to identify and document historic vineyards worldwide, with participants eligible for prizes while contributing to the preservation of viticultural heritage.

The Registry’s expanding scope aligns closely with the OIV’s Resolution OIV-VITI 703-2024, “OIV definition and recommendations about old grapevines and old vineyards in the vitivinicultural sector,” which explicitly encourages wine regions worldwide to catalogue and document their old vines.

“The Registry was built on the idea that preservation starts with visibility,” says wine writer Alder Yarrow, who manages the project day to day. “What’s been most encouraging is seeing how producers, importers, and volunteers have all stepped in to help make that visibility real.”

The Old Vine Registry will host its annual update webinar on 30 June at 17:00 BST / 09:00 PST, during which the yearly winners of the Heritage Vine Hunt contest will be announced alongside a new initiative. Registration details will be circulated one month prior to the event.

The Registry continues to welcome volunteer researchers and financial supporters interested in sustaining the non-profit initiative. Interested parties may contact oldvineregistry@gmail.com.

Greene Tree Care Helps Ventura County Residents Prepare for Wildfire Season with Defensible Space Services

With insurance cancellations on the rise and the June 1 defensible space deadline approaching, the certified arborists at Greene Tree Care ramp up fire clearance operations and community outreach

VENTURA, Calif., May 29, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Throughout Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, property owners face dual threats: wildfires and insurance cancellations. In an effort to help their clients manage both, Greene Tree Care — a family-owned business headquartered in Camarillo, California — has expanded its defensible space services.

Greene Tree Care services removing a Mexican fan palm
Image caption: Greene Tree Care services removing a Mexican fan palm.

Homeowners, HOA managers, and estate and commercial property owners can access these services by calling the Greene Tree Care team. The company is accepting urgent requests for the removal of high-risk trees and brush. They aim to help property owners as insurance providers threaten non-renewals, summer temperatures climb, and Ventura and Los Angeles Counties approach their June 1 Defensible Space deadlines.

“We’re seeing more and more homeowners caught off guard by insurance letters demanding immediate action,” Leigh Fleming, Owner at Greene Tree Care, explains. “The key is proactive, professional maintenance — not just for compliance, but to truly protect homes, families, and communities.”

The Greene Tree Care team is led by certified arborists. The company has more than 30 years of experience and is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. This helps property owners offset concerns from their own insurance providers.

It also helps them keep compliance with Ventura County Fire Code Chapter 49, which requires a defensible space of 100 feet from structures and 10 feet from roads. This defensible space slows the spread of wildfire and protects structures, making it a key part of local wildfire mitigation efforts.

Property owners who are unsure if they’re in compliance and have protected their property can request an inspection through https://wildfireprepared.org/. In some cases, property owners can even use the inspection as proof of a hazard being resolved, enabling them to reinstate insurance coverage.

Leveraging that inspection report or their own expertise — and backed by Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping — the Greene Tree Care team helps property owners make sound decisions. Their certified arborists are knowledgeable about local vegetation and wildfire conditions and specialize in high-risk removals. They may recommend the removal of species like eucalyptus, pine, and palm, for example, which all pose higher risks and are often flagged by insurance companies. Greene Tree Care has the experience and tools needed to help property owners understand — and best manage — their wildfire risk.

Greene Tree Care serves areas throughout Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, including Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, and the surrounding Conejo Valley neighborhoods.

Anyone from a homeowner to the owner of an estate to the manager of an HOA can turn to Greene Tree Care for a long-term partner to help manage their property.

To schedule a free estimate, call the team at (805) 484-9900. Or to learn more about the available services, including land clearing for fire safety, visit https://www.greenetreecare.com/.

About Greene Tree Care:

Greene Tree Care established a reputation for providing truly professional tree service more than 30 years ago. Throughout the subsequent decades, their team has solidified their status as the go-to experts when it comes to all things trees.

Greene Tree Care’s clients trust their judgement, recommendations, and the quality of their work because the results speak for themselves. As a company, they understand the value of creating lifelong partnerships. The properties they service and the relationships they’ve developed are not viewed as one-time events but rather as years-long affairs. They care about the long-term health of each client’s property.

Echoes of the Forest to Host Unveiling Event for First ‘Echo’ in Asheville’s River Arts District

ASHEVILLE, N.C., May 12, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Echoes of the Forest, an Asheville-based 501(c)(3), is thrilled to announce the unveiling of its very first Echo. This is a significant milestone in the organization’s mission to promote community revitalization, environmental restoration, and economic rejuvenation through art. The event will take place at Foundation Woodworks in Asheville’s River Arts District on Thursday, June 12 at 5 p.m. (details below).

The Mountain Man, a Hurricane Helene salvaged walnut tree. Proceeds benefit Echoes of the Forest
Image caption: The Mountain Man, a Hurricane Helene salvaged walnut tree. Proceeds benefit Echoes of the Forest and the winner will be announced on June 12.

Echoes of the Forest was founded to honor the trees lost in our region by transforming them into meaningful works of art. Through the hands of local artists, these salvaged remnants become powerful symbols of renewal—supporting the creative economy and showcasing the resilience of our artistic community. By placing these “Echoes” in areas impacted by natural disasters, the initiative promotes restoration, inspires environmental awareness, and strengthens community connection.

The Echo project represents a powerful blend of art, nature, and resilience, designed to honor the recovery of one of western North Carolina’s hardest-hit regions after Hurricane Helene. This first Echo is a symbol of transformation both for the land and the people who call it home. Created by Chester Shuey of Appalachian Joinery, this masterfully crafted piece is made from an 800-pound piece of Hurricane Helene salvaged white oak. It’s sure to evoke reflection and encourage hope and healing.

“When Liisa first asked me about getting involved with Echoes of the Forest, I knew immediately that this was a special project and one that I couldn’t wait to get on board with. Within a few days, I got my salvaged white oak wood and was ready to get started on my bench. Right away, I knew what I wanted to design. It’s such an honor to be included in a mission that would involve my fellow woodworking community; it just felt like the right thing to do because these trees mean so much and so does our artist revitalization,” said Shuey.

This first Echo is a true testament to the mission of this organization.

“We’re excited to unveil it in the River Arts District at Foundation Woodworks. This area was one of the hardest hit regions post-Hurricane Helene,” said Liisa Andreassen, founder of Echoes of the Forest. “We aim to inspire connection, celebrate community strength with economic revitalization, and highlight the beauty of our natural surroundings.”

EVENT DETAILS:

  • What: Unveiling of the first Echo by Echoes of the Forest
  • When: June 12, 2025; 5 p.m.
  • Where: Foundation Woodworks, 289 Lyman Street (formerly the PLEB) in the River Arts District (RAD).
  • Who Should Attend: Media representatives, residents of western NC, nature enthusiasts, and art lovers

The event will also include an opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind Echoes of the Forest masterpiece crafted by Mike Ayers, an internationally acclaimed chainsaw artist.

Raffle tickets can be purchased here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/echoes-of-the-forest-hurricane-helene-art-raffle.

The raffle piece is crafted from a salvaged walnut tree that was the victim of Helene and depicts a mountain man with leaves swirling about his head with a tear coming down his cheek. Raffle tickets will be available for last-minute purchases and the drawing will take place at an after-party and “Meet the Woodworkers” mingle at the nearby Radical Hotel’s Roof Top Cocktail Bar at 95 Roberts Street.

Attendees will learn about future planned Echo installations in the region and will have the exclusive opportunity to be part of discussions surrounding community resilience and ecological restoration.

Domaine Carneros Celebrates 20 Years of Solar Leadership This Earth Day

Pioneer in Sustainable Winemaking Launches State-of-the-Art Microgrid, Further Cementing Environmental Leadership

NAPA, Calif., April 16, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — As Earth Day approaches on April 22, Domaine Carneros is raising a glass to a significant milestone: over two decades of pioneering solar energy in the wine industry. What began in 2003 as the world’s largest winery solar installation has evolved into a cutting-edge microgrid system that now provides nearly 80% of the winery’s energy needs while reducing carbon emissions by 375 metric tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to powering 50 homes for a year.

Microgrid Solar Panels - Domaine Carneros Winery 2025
Image caption: Microgrid Solar Panels – Domaine Carneros Winery 2025.

“When we installed our first solar array two decades ago, we were at the forefront of renewable energy adoption in the wine industry,” notes CEO Remi Cohen. “Today, our advanced microgrid technology represents the next generation of energy independence and environmental stewardship. As climate challenges intensify, Domaine Carneros continues its commitment to leading with a light footprint while crafting the highest quality wines.”

REVOLUTIONARY MICROGRID TECHNOLOGY

In partnership with Schneider Electric, named the world’s most sustainable company by Time magazine, Domaine Carneros deployed the EcoStruxure™ Microgrid in 2023, doubling the winery’s energy generation capacity.

  • Self-generation of nearly 80% of energy for winery operations
  • Annual savings of $70,000
  • Ability to operate in “island mode” during grid outages
  • Solar power production of 740MWh in the last year, equivalent to taking 110 cars off the road

The system also powers four electric vehicle charging stations for guests, seamlessly integrating green technology throughout the visitor experience.

AWARD-WINNING ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES

Domaine Carneros’ comprehensive approach to sustainability has earned numerous prestigious recognitions, including:

  • 2025 RISE Leadership Award for Energy Efficiency and Savings
  • 2024 City of Napa Leadership Recycling Award
  • 2023 RISE Leadership Award for waste prevention and supply chain greening
  • 2020 Napa Climate NOW! Climate Champion in the Business Category
  • 2019 California Green Medal Business Award

The winery maintains multiple environmental certifications, including California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, Napa Green Vineyard & Winery, Bay Area Green Business, and Fish Friendly Farming.

BEYOND ENERGY: COMPREHENSIVE SUSTAINABILITY

Domaine Carneros implements sustainability throughout its operations:

  • Diverting approximately 90% of solid waste from landfills through composting, recycling, and reuse
  • Recycling and reusing water used in production to irrigate estate vineyards
  • Reusing 20-25% of packaging materials, saving over a million pieces since 2010
  • Practicing Integrated Pest Management with owl boxes and beneficial cover crops
  • Composting approximately 450,000 pounds of food waste since 2013
  • Implementing lighter weight bottles to reduce shipping impacts
  • Offsetting carbon emissions from wine club shipments

“Our commitment to environmental stewardship is fundamentally rooted in our estate vineyards under Allison Wilson’s visionary stewardship,” says Remi Cohen, CEO of Domaine Carneros. “This commitment is further demonstrated through two decades of solar energy innovation powering our winemaking, ensuring our tradition of excellence thrives sustainably for generations to come.”

Merriam Vineyards Celebrates Earth Day 2025 With Quarter-Century Legacy of Environmental Stewardship

Family's Multi-Generational Commitment to Land Conservation Highlighted During 25th Anniversary Year

HEALDSBURG, Calif., April 10, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — As the world marks the 55th annual Earth Day, Merriam Vineyards showcases its 25-year journey of sustainable winegrowing in the Russian River Valley AVA, where environmental stewardship has been woven into the fabric of their operation since inception. The winery’s anniversary year coincides with this global celebration of environmental action, highlighting how their conservation practices are deeply rooted in family traditions predating the vineyard’s establishment.

“Our commitment to the land isn’t just a business decision—it’s a family philosophy spanning generations,” explains Peter Merriam, who, along with his wife Diana, founded the winery in 2000. “Growing up in Maine, I learned organic farming methods from my father, spent countless hours fly fishing in our watersheds, and developed a deep appreciation for nature. These early experiences shaped our approach to viticulture long before sustainability became an industry buzzword.”

This Earth Day, Merriam Vineyards celebrates significant environmental milestones achieved across its three distinct estate properties totaling 45 acres. The winery recently completed organic certification for its production facility through CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), complementing the organic certification held by its Los Amigos Estate since 2012. Additionally, the Eastside Estate Vineyard earned Fish Friendly Farming certification in December 2024, recognizing the winery’s efforts to protect the Mark West Creek watershed and critical habitats for steelhead trout and coho salmon.

“Our environmental practices aren’t compartmentalized—they form a comprehensive ecosystem approach,” notes Estate Manager Evan Merriam, representing the next generation of family leadership. “From our Babydoll sheep providing natural vineyard management to our cattle grazing for fire protection, we’re implementing solutions that honor the interconnectedness of all life on our estate.”

Diana Merriam’s Greek heritage has further influenced the property’s Mediterranean-inspired design and ecological philosophy. “Mediterranean culture has always emphasized living in harmony with the natural world,” she explains. “Our landscape redesign, completed with Munden Fry Landscape Associates, creates outdoor spaces that connect visitors directly with our vineyards and natural surroundings, emphasizing the relationship between sustainable farming and exceptional wines.”

The winery’s Earth Day initiatives build upon a foundation of environmental practices that include:

  • Comprehensive watershed protection strategies at the Eastside Estate, particularly for the Mark West Creek tributary of the Russian River
  • Introduction of Babydoll sheep for natural vineyard management, reducing reliance on machinery and improving soil health
  • Cattle grazing for range management and fire protection on outlying hills
  • Progression toward no-till farming methods to minimize carbon emissions
  • Installation of hedgerows to prevent erosion along riparian corridors
  • Rigorous organic and sustainable certifications across all properties, including CCOF, CCSW (Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing), and Sonoma Sustainable designations
  • Using 100% of the wastewater at the winery as part of its water reclamation efforts

William Weese, Merriam’s winemaker, sees direct connections between these environmental practices and wine quality, influenced by his formative training under renowned Chilean organic pioneer Alvaro Espinoza. “Working with Alvaro in Chile shaped my understanding of how organic farming creates vineyard resilience and wine authenticity,” Weese notes. “Our minimal intervention approach in the vineyard translates to minimal intervention in the cellar. By nurturing healthy soils and ecosystems the way Alvaro taught, we’re able to produce wines that genuinely express the terroir of this special place, with vibrant natural acidity and balanced flavors that don’t require manipulation.”

“As we mark both Earth Day and our 25th anniversary, we’re looking forward to the next quarter-century of environmental stewardship,” Peter Merriam reflects. “The work we do today—enhancing soil health, protecting watersheds, reducing our carbon footprint—creates a legacy for future generations. That’s always been the heart of our mission at Merriam Vineyards.”

About Merriam Vineyards:

Established in 2000 in Sonoma, CA’s Russian River AVA by husband-and-wife Peter and Diana Merriam, Merriam Vineyards specializes in Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties and was born from the couple’s love of Old-World wines and extensive European travels. Recognizing the immense potential for producing distinctive single-vineyard wines in Sonoma, the Merriam’s acquired what would become known as the Windacre Vineyard in 2000, adding Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec plantings beyond its existing Merlot vines and establishing the quality of Bordeaux varieties in a region primarily known for cool-climate wines.

The couple expanded its estate into Burgundian varieties with the planting of its Los Amigos property in 2008 and in 2022, purchased the Eastside Estate, with a focus on cool-climate Pinot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery’s rigorous, decades-long commitment to sustainable viticulture and production resulted in the prestigious CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) certification for its Los Amigos estate (2012) and winery (2023), as well as CCSW (Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing) certification for its Eastside Estate and Windacre vineyard. Son Evan Merriam represents the Merriam’s next generation as estate manager.

Merriam Vineyards Celebrates 25 Years of Winegrowing Excellence in Russian River Valley

Quarter-Century Milestone Marked by Special Releases and Enhanced Visitor Experience

HEALDSBURG, Calif., Feb. 3, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Merriam Vineyards, a pioneering force in Russian River Valley’s diverse winegrowing landscape, announces the commencement of its 25th anniversary celebration. Founded in 2000 by Peter and Diana Merriam, the winery has evolved from its initial 12-acre purchase into a distinguished estate encompassing three distinct vineyard properties, each expressing the unique terroir of the Russian River Valley AVA.

“When we acquired Windacre Vineyard in 2000, we envisioned creating wines that would honor both the Old-World traditions we loved, and the unique character of the Russian River Valley AVA” reflects Peter Merriam. “Twenty-five years later, that vision has been realized, encompassing not just exceptional wines but a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and an enhanced visitor experience. It has been a great way to walk the walk of appreciating fine wine, by owning and managing very special vineyards.”

The anniversary year will feature special commemorative releases, including a limited-edition sparkling Blanc de Noirs, alongside a series of celebratory events throughout 2025. These offerings will showcase the winery’s evolution from its origins as a Bordeaux-focused producer, uncommon at the founding, to its current diverse portfolio spanning both Bordeaux and Burgundian varieties.

The milestone coincides with significant achievements in sustainable practices across the estate. The winery recently completed its organic certification process through CCOF, building upon the organic certification of its Los Amigos estate property. The Windacre and Eastside properties maintain rigorous sustainable certifications through CCSW and Sonoma Sustainable programs, with Eastside Estate additionally achieving Fish Friendly Farming certification in 2024.

The anniversary celebration follows the 2023 transformation of the winery’s landscape, designed in partnership with Munden Fry Landscape Associates (MFLA). This reimagining created an array of outdoor tasting environments that bring visitors closer to the vineyards and highlight the estate’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Features include antique olive trees, garden rooms under shade trees, and a distinctive water wall feature that complements the natural surroundings. Co-proprietor Diana Merriam hails from Greek heritage, and the property’s design and aesthetic represent the elegant ease of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

Estate Manager Evan Merriam, representing the next generation of family leadership, emphasizes the forward-looking nature of the anniversary: “While we’re celebrating our past achievements, we’re equally focused on the future. Our recent initiatives in organic farming, watershed protection, and enhanced visitor experiences set the stage for our next quarter century.”

Co-proprietor Peter Merriam adds, “When Diana and I first visited Sonoma County decades ago, we knew that a dream could be realized. I was selling fine European wine to discerning clients in New England and having grown up farming organically with my father in Maine, I wanted to merge two passions, fine wine and organic farming, and we’ve achieved that at Merriam Vineyards. Now as we look forward to our next goals, we want to reflect on the achievements, my family and team have accomplished.”

The winery will announce specific anniversary events and releases throughout the year. For more information about Merriam Vineyards’ 25th anniversary celebration, visit www.merriamvineyards.com or follow on Instagram @merriamvineyards.

Old Vine Registry Passes 4,000 entries: Vineyards planted in 1990 now eligible for inclusion

Wine growers are encouraged to submit their vineyards to the global crowd-sourced database that continues to grow and thrive

LONDON, England, Jan. 27, 2025 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Old Vine Registry, the world’s first and most authoritative database of old vine vineyards marked the new year having accumulated more than 4,000 entries from 39 countries, making steady progress to a goal of registering 10,000 vineyards by 2027.

Old Vine Registry home page
Image caption: Old Vine Registry home page.

With the changing of the year, vineyards planted in 1990 are now 35 years old and are eligible for inclusion in the registry. Producers are encouraged to submit their vineyards at https://www.oldvineregistry.org/.

The OIV’s recently passed Resolution OIV-VITI 703-2024 “OIV definition and recommendations about old grapevines and old vineyards in the vitivinicultural sector” made the explicit recommendation to all wine regions around the world to “promote and encourage the cataloguing of old vineyards and old grapevines.”

The Old Vine Registry was conceived expressly for that purpose, with the idea that in order to study, preserve, or support old vines around the world, you first need to know where they all are. The registry launched in June of 2023 with 2183 entries and has grown steadily over the last year and a half.

“The recent OIV Resolution really validated what we’re doing,” says wine writer Alder Yarrow, who serves as the day-to-day manager of the registry. “I hope it will encourage both individual producers and whole regions to publish information about their old vines.”

The Old Vine Registry is also seeking both volunteers willing to research old vineyards, as well as financial donors willing to support the non-profit project. Interested parties should e-mail oldvineregistry@gmail.com.

Originally started by Jancis Robinson, the Registry launched as a crowd-sourced, public resource on the web in June of 2024, funded by a donation from Jackson Family Wines and managed by Alder Yarrow of Vinography.Com. The site is owned by The Old Vine Conference, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to building a credible category for old vine wines and a community that sustains and communicates its value. William Cole Vineyards Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Cuvée Claire

ST. HELENA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- This fall, William Cole Vineyards a multigenerational, family-owned winery producing handcrafted wines in St. Helena, will commemorate the 25th anniversary of one of their signature wines, the Cuvée Claire Cabernet Sauvignon. Created by owner and winemaker William Ballentine Jr. in honor of his daughter, Claire, there is either a family connection or a special commemoration behind every label at William Cole Vineyards.

Proprietor William Ballentine Jr. is a fourth-generation Napa winemaker and works with son Cole Ballentine to usher every step of production from grape to glass. Farming five acres of estate vineyards and sourcing from select Napa sites, they make Cabernet, Bordeaux blends, and other small lot wines at their historic stone winery in St. Helena.

William and his wife, Jane Ballentine, acquired their ghost winery in 1999, breathing fresh spirit into the site and launching their new brand, William Cole Vineyards. Today, after twenty-five successful vintages at the winery, the wines are widely celebrated for their timeless quality, and classic appeal. The winery was built in 1873, by John and Hannah Weinberger, using stone from a quarry they owned, it was one of the first stone cellars in Napa Valley. Lovers of history, William and Jane mindfully restored the building after its purchase in 1999. They were the fourth owners of the building, and have both maintained its historic footprint, but modernized the interior to make wine, welcome visitors and entertain clients and friends. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Prior to 1999, William was steeped in wine growing and winemaking history, following his grandfather around in the winery and his father in the vineyard. From a young age, he quickly took to the rhythm of harvest and winemaking. Cuvée Claire represented the very first wine that William made for William Cole Vineyards, inspired after the birth of his daughter Claire in 1997. An average of six hundred cases are made of this wine a year. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, spends 30-40 months in French oak, a combination of new and neutral depending on the vintage.

About William Cole Vineyards:

A family affair, William Cole Vineyards is run by proprietors William and Jane Ballentine. Their son Cole is the winemaker, daughter Claire is involved in Marketing. They have 5 acres of estate vineyards with 3 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon from volcanic soils flecked with Black Obsidian. They also source fruit from Howell and Spring Mountains to make an array of Napa centric wines, totaling 1,000 cases, a truly boutique project. Everything is high touch at the winery, from the nod to history in the decor, to the hand labeling, corking and sealing of bottles, by the family, the visitor gets a chance to see a side of the wine industry anchored in tradition.

Old Vine Registry Marks One Year Anniversary and Announces Heritage Vine Hunt Contest

LONDON, U.K. /ScoopCloud/ -- To mark the first anniversary of its launch, the Old Vine Registry held a One-Year-On webinar for the wine trade, media and old-vine enthusiasts. The hosts, Old Vine Registry Manager, Alder Yarrow, and co-founder of The Old Vine Conference, Sarah Abbott MW, announced a growth in old-vine listings of more than 1,000 new vineyards in one year; this increase of 49% brought the total number of vineyards catalogued to 3,279, across 36 countries.

"I'm really pleased with the progress that we've made so far," said Yarrow. "More than 200 individuals from around the world have submitted vineyard data, as well as some larger regional organizations. That said, we're still just scratching the surface of the old vine universe."

To ensure the continued growth and impact of the Old Vine Registry, the team have conceived a campaign to catalogue 10,000 vineyards in the next three years, which was announced during the webinar.

"In order for The Old Vine Registry to keep growing and deepen its impact we need to keep it in the minds of the global wine community. That's why we have launched the Heritage Vine Hunt Contest which aims to incentivise individuals to help us log, promote and protect more old vineyards," said Sarah Abbott MW.

Over the next three years, prizes will be awarded yearly to the individuals who contribute the most vineyard entries to the Registry. Prizes have been donated by wine industry leaders including Wine Scholar Guild, JancisRobinson.com, The Old Vine Conference, World of Fine Wine magazine, Académie du Vin Library and Vinous. Like Wikipedia, the Registry depends on the submission of vineyard data by interested parties who own or can search out vineyard data.

After three years, the individual who has contributed the most vineyards will receive the Grand Prize, which includes a travel bursary to attend an Old Vine Conference field trip, which are held around the world. Covering airfare, hotel, meals, and registration, this bursary has a value of more than US $2,000.

"We hope these prizes will incentivize some people to do a bit of research and contribute more vineyards," said Yarrow. "It's not that hard to dig up information on old vineyards, it just takes a little time and effort, and now with the contest we can reward some of that effort with great prizes and, of course, an immersive and educational trip to learn more about the significance of the world's viticultural heritage."

Contest winners will be announced yearly on the anniversary of the Registry's launch. More details on the Heritage Vine Hunt contest can be found at: https://oldvineregistry.org/contest

New York Supreme Court Upholds La Belle Farm and Hudson Foie Gras’s Right to Sell the Duck Delicacy in NYC

SULLIVAN COUNTY, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- In a significant legal victory for upstate New York duck farmers, the New York Supreme Court in Albany has ruled against New York City's ban on the sale of foie gras. The ruling confirms that Local Law 202, which sought to prohibit the sale of foie gras within City limits and had been enjoined by the New York State Department of Agriculture, violates state agricultural laws designed to protect farming practices and promote agricultural commerce, La Belle Farms announced today.

With this decision, New York City remains prohibited from enforcing its ban on foie gras, allowing restaurants and retailers to continue offering this culinary delicacy to their patrons. The ruling reaffirms that local laws cannot unreasonably restrict state-protected agricultural practices.

La Belle Farms Inc. and Hudson Valley Foie Gras, both based in Ferndale, NY, challenged the City's ban, arguing that it unlawfully targeted their farming practices and threatened their livelihood. The Court's decision underscores the importance of supporting local agriculture and upholding state policies that prioritize economic stability in farming communities.

Key Points:

* In 2019, New York City enacted Local Law 202, banning the sale of foie gras, citing concerns over animal welfare related to the force-feeding process used in its production.

* The New York State Agriculture and Markets Law (AML) § 305-a protects farming operations from local regulations that unreasonably restrict agricultural practices.

* After reviewing Local Law 202 and investigating the impact it would have on the Farms, the NYS Department of Agriculture declared that the law was void and unenforceable.

* In a Decision and Order issued on June 21, 2024, the New York State Supreme Court in Albany agreed and held that Local Law 202 was preempted by state laws that promote and protect the agricultural economy.

* The Court's decision reaffirms the legality of foie gras production and sale throughout New York State, ensuring that upstate farmers can continue their operations without city-imposed restrictions.

Sergio Saravia, President of La Belle Farms, expressed his relief and gratitude for the Court's decision. "This ruling is a victory for farmers across New York State. It's about more than just foie gras; it's about preserving our right to farm and support our families. We are grateful to New York Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets Richard Ball for protecting our livelihoods and the Court for recognizing the importance of the state's agricultural practices."

Edward J. Phillips, attorney at Keane and Beane, P.C. in White Plains, NY, who represented the farmers, commented, "The Court's thorough and insightful decision sets an important precedent that protects the farming community in Sullivan County and the broader agricultural economy of New York State."

About La Belle Farms:

La Belle Farms is a 40-acre, family-run, duck farm located in Sullivan County, NY. It is one of three farms in the country that produce foie gras. The farm was established by the Saravia and Lee families in 1999 and has supported four generations of family members. It currently produces over 182,000 ducks per-year for high-quality foie gras and other superior duck meat products. Their management team constantly travels around the world, learning about the latest production methods and keeping tabs on culinary trends.

Blade Solution Corp announces partnership with Cobalt Product Solutions to manufacture eco-friendly technology aimed at eliminating mower accident amputations

SULPHUR SPRINGS, Ark. /ScoopCloud/ -- Blade Solution Corp, an Arkansas based C- Corporation, today announced a partnership with Cobalt Product Solutions of Plano, Texas, a product engineering and manufacturing provider. Blade Solution has developed patent-pending technology that will nearly eliminate the hundreds of amputations occurring each year in the USA as a result of contact with metal mower blades.

Blade Solution has developed a "hub and line" cutting technology that may be installed by the consumer on any existing mower effectively replacing the metal blades. Cobalt has agreed to complete the final engineering work on the REVO6 2.0 design and manufacture sufficient units to meet demand in the upcoming 2024 mowing season. In exchange, Cobalt will receive an equity stake in Blade Solution.

"We are very impressed by the Blade Solution technology and see a huge opportunity for an alternative to metal mower blades in the marketplace. This technology is not only safer but cleaner and more environmentally friendly," said Robert Heilbrun, a co-founder of Cobalt.

Merriam Vineyards declares 2023 a ‘first class’ vintage – concludes inaugural harvest in newly California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) Certified Winery

SONOMA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Merriam Vineyards, located in California's Russian River AVA, wrapped up the 2023 harvest with much to celebrate. Winemaker William Weese states that this year is poised to produce a "great and first-class vintage" for Merriam's award-winning cool-climate varieties, especially its Pinot Noir. Throughout Sonoma County and many AVAs within California, the 2023 vintage is already anticipated to be one of the best in decades.

"Being a cooler year with long hangtime was extremely beneficial," Weese says. "We were getting phenolic ripeness on fruit without having to deal with high Brix. The acid was there, too. I never felt like I needed to pick or press a wine off earlier than I wanted to, to make room for the next wine, so all the wines we made got all the attention they deserved." Weese adds that the excellent conditions also resulted in minimal intervention in winemaking, resulting in a direct expression of the vineyard and a chance for the "fruit to speak for itself."

This harvest marks the first for Merriam as a fully CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers)-certified winery, following decades of commitment to organic and sustainable practices in their vineyards and beyond. Founded in 2000 by husband-and-wife Peter and Diana Merriam and focusing on estate-grown Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties, Merriam previously achieved CCOF vineyard certification for its Los Amigos estate property in 2012. Purchased in 2022, the Eastside estate is currently certified sustainable through the CSWA California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance and the Windacre vineyard-

the first vineyard purchased by the Merriams in 2000-is currently certified sustainable with the Sonoma Sustainable designation. The 2023 vintage of several vineyard designates from the Los Amigos property, named after three generations of Merriam women including Diana's Pinot Noir, Danielle's Fumé Blanc, and Evanthea's Chardonnay, will include "made with organic grapes" on the label.

"The CCOF certification has been a nice progression through our sustainable journey," says Peter, adding that they "immediately" began pursuing certification after founding the winery. "Its arduous nature means we must abide by strict rules and materials, and everything must be planned, proactive and approved. On the winery side, that includes strict regulations inside the facilities such as keeping the organic materials isolated, triple rinsed, sanitized, and sterilized, and documenting everything along the way."

"My family has been farming organically since 2012 because we believe it produces world-class wines, and with this newest certification we are able to continue to educate consumers on the quality that comes from holding ourselves to higher standards and practices," adds estate manager Evan Merriam.

An extension of its ongoing commitment to sustainable farming, the winery also introduced 800 Babydoll sheep into the estate vineyards last spring to mow down clover and other cover crop. Too small to damage vines, the sheep improve vineyard soil health by providing natural fertilizer and reducing the need for heavy machinery, which means less soil compaction and improved soil fertility and structure. Merriam also has 25 head of cattle grazing the outlying hills above the vineyard for range management and fire protection.

Outdoor design expansion of its 21-acre estate has been an additional project for Merriam this year, in partnership with Munden Fry Landscape Associates (MFLA). The project elevates guest experience while respecting and showcasing the property's natural environs. "A connection to the vineyard and the sustainable farming practices provided the foundation for the renovations of the tasting terrace, new Garden Rooms and a reorientation of the visitors experience when entering the property," says MFLA Partner James Munden.

Begun in 2021, the plan includes a row of antique olive trees with a rich underplanting of ornamental grasses, leading visitors to the various tasting areas. Hedges create green walls defining the outdoor tasting rooms under a bosque of plane trees for shade from the summer heat. A stone water wall feature mitigates sound from nearby Hwy 101 and encloses one side of the Tasting Terrace. Creating a more enjoyable and immersive winery experience aligns with the Merriam family's early vision of bringing visitors outside, emphasizing the vineyards, views and natural habitats that are the focus of the winery's environmentally progressive efforts.

About Merriam Vineyards:

Established in 2000 in Sonoma, CA's Russian River AVA by husband-and-wife Peter and Diana Merriam, Merriam Vineyards specializes in Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties and was born from the couple's love of Old World wines and extensive European travels. Recognizing the immense potential for producing distinctive single-vineyard wines in Sonoma, the Merriam's acquired what would become known as the Windacre Vineyard in 2000, adding Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec plantings beyond its existing Merlot vines and establishing the quality of Bordeaux varieties in a region primarily known for cool-climate wines.

The couple expanded its estate into Burgundian varieties with the acquisition of its Los Amigos property in 2009 and in 2022, purchased the hillside Eastside Estate, with a focus on core col-climate Pinot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The winery's rigorous, decades-long commitment to sustainable viticulture and production resulted in the prestigious CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) certification for its Los Amigos estate (2012) and winery (2023), as well as CCSW (Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing) certification for its Windacre property and Sonoma Sustainable for its Eastside Estate. Son Evan Merriam represents the Merriam's next generation as estate manager.
