Tampa-Based Human Rights Activist Helps Protect Youth from Human Trafficking

TAMPA, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and Florida is the third-busiest hub for child sex trafficking in the United States. Tampa-based activist Christopher King, United for Human Rights Florida Executive Director and Founder of the nonprofit The Gentlemen's Course, works to protect youth from being trafficked. How he came to take on this mission is documented in an episode of Voices for Humanity on the Scientology Network.

"Human trafficking is real," says King. "We're talking about kids being sold, traded - against their own will. No one should be a slave, and no one has the right to enslave anyone. Human traffickers - they're in the schools, they're on social media. They're getting the kids on their platform. So, we might as well attack them on the same ground."

King, a fashion designer, U.S. Marine veteran and the grandson of blues legend BB King, founded the nonprofit The Gentlemen's Course after learning about Youth for Human Rights, the youth component of United for Human Rights.

The Gentlemen's Course teaches etiquette, human rights and human trafficking awareness to at-risk youth: How youth are lured into trafficking by promises of gifts, often by kids their own age. King uses the human rights education materials of Youth for Human Rights to help kids examine their attitudes toward others and build self-respect. He inspires them to create future goals and provides them with tools to achieve them.

Youth for Human Rights International materials help people of all ages understand the 30 rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Creating a world where human rights are known and protected starts with effective educational programs that reach across all cultural and geographic boundaries.

Inspired by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard's words that "Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream," the Church of Scientology and Scientologists support Youth for Human Rights and make its educational materials available free of charge.

Scientologists Celebrate What They Love Most About Melbourne on the Anniversary of the Dedication of their Ideal Scientology Church

MELBOURNE, Australia /ScoopCloud/ -- In a city obsessed with sport, what could be a better location for a Church of Scientology than the original home of the first Aussie rules football team and the site of the first game that team ever played? That is exactly where the Ideal Church of Scientology was dedicated by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige on January 29, 2011.

Out of respect for the significance of this site to the community, the Church meticulously restored all historic elements, including its timber floors, archways, brickwork, and the graceful stairwell at the entrance of the building.

But Melbourne was also significant in the history of Scientology. In his speech at the dedication, Mr. Miscavige described how in 1959, Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard delivered a series of lectures through which "the whole panorama of human potential came into focus." A Cross-Country Crusade to Help Educators Keep Children Safe

SEATTLE, Wash. /ScoopCloud/ -- Sean Burke's passion is helping others. A lifelong volunteer and a Scientologist since 1987, during the pandemic he worked with a nonprofit formed by top ICU doctors, sharing information on how to properly treat COVID in the hospital and at home. But this year, he decided to focus on another pandemic: The spiraling drug crisis that is affecting youth throughout America. He took action by introducing thousands of educators to the Truth About Drugs-the drug education and prevention initiative supported by the Church of Scientology.

Burke and his wife moved to Seattle in 2022. Always on the lookout to create positive change, he connected with the local chapter of Foundation for a Drug-Free World, sponsored by the Seattle Church of Scientology, and helped staff a booth at a local educator conference.

"Teachers were lining up to talk to us and get drug education materials," he says. He was stunned by how interested they were in the program. So he volunteered to drive 1,400 miles across four states to man a Drug-Free World booth at an educator conference in Fargo, North Dakota. The reach there was just as strong as what he saw in Seattle.

He found the same intense interest in the program when he set up a booth at a conference in Missoula, Montana. So Burke selected nine other conferences taking place on the East Coast and Midwest over six weeks at the start of the school year. And he reached out to other Scientology Churches to line up volunteers to cover conferences taking place at the same time in their own areas.

He flew into Baltimore in October, rented a cargo van to carry his materials, and set off to Charleston, West Virginia. Checking into the hotel where the conference was taking place, two women approached and thanked him for being there. They'd both lost people to overdose. Little did Burke know when he selected this conference as the first stop of his tour that Charleston is, as the two women told him, "the opioid capital of the world."

The following day, a retired teacher came to his booth to introduce Burke to her "sole surviving daughter." Two others had died of opioid overdose. Her daughter, a teacher like her mom, took a Truth About Drugs education package to use in her classroom. Another educator shared a link to the Truth About Drugs videos on painkillers and alcohol with 2,400 physical education and driver-ed teachers.

Three weeks and four conferences later in Lincoln, Nebraska, the woman in the booth next to his told Burke "I used to use the Truth About Drugs in my classroom." That was when she taught 8th grade. Now, she's with the University of Nebraska training future health teachers while she pursues her Ph.D. in health education. She wanted 20 Truth About Drugs lesson plans for her student teachers to use with their health education pupils. He helped her order the full Truth About Drugs Educators' Kits, which also include all materials, assignments, and suggested classroom activities, which Foundation for a Drug-Free World ships out free of charge.

"Wherever I set up at a conference I would meet educators who have been using these materials successfully for years," he said. In Verona, New York, a town 35 miles east of Syracuse, nearly 70 percent of the educators who stopped by his booth had either heard of or were using the program in their classrooms.

While Burke was driving 7,000 miles across 21 states to staff a booth at nine conferences, volunteers he activated brought the program to another 21 conferences from Texas to Wisconsin and Maine to Alabama. In all, 97 volunteers distributed more than 1,700 educator kits and 668,000 sets of Truth About Drugs materials.

Far from thinking the job is now done, Burke is only getting started. Between his own volunteer work and those he encourages to join in the campaign, he is planning to bring the Truth About Drugs initiative to 50 conferences and distribute 1 million drug education materials to educators throughout the country in the coming year.

What Burke likes best about the campaign is the enthusiasm educators have for the curriculum. They tell him that kids find the booklets and videos fascinating; the Truth About Drugs materials help young people examine their attitudes about drugs and alcohol and make firm decisions about how they will live their lives. And they give them tools to help friends and family members on this urgent issue.

The Church of Scientology and Scientologists support Foundation for a Drug-Free World, making it possible for the Foundation to provide its drug education materials free of charge to educators, law enforcement, parents and anyone wishing to reach others with the truth about drugs.

Nonagenarian Scientologist Shares His Story in Honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day

BRUSSELS, Belgium /ScoopCloud/ -- Marc Bromberg, a Nonagenarian Scientologist, was 9 when France surrendered to the German forces in June 1940, and 10 when he and his mother were separated from his father. Two years ago, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, in an article in the European Times, Bromberg shared his memories of life under Nazi occupation all those many years ago. International Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Here is his story:

When France fell in 1940, the country was divided in two. The North, including Paris, was under German military occupation; Southern France maintained nominal sovereignty under the rule of Marshal Petain, head of the notorious Vichy regime.

Bromberg parents were Jewish. His mother was born in Paris, but his father arrived in France at age 2, classifying him as a foreigner. Living under direct Nazi control put his father at far greater risk of arrest and deportation to an internment camp than his French wife and son.

"My mother, always far-sighted, smuggled him across the demarcation line between the German-occupied zone and the so-called free southern zone in the summer of '41," says Bromberg.

After summer vacation, Bromberg went back to school in Paris, but, he says, his mother was "very aware of the danger that the first anti-Jewish discrimination measures posed to our family. She quickly realized that she and I should also leave the occupied zone."

She decided they should join her husband in the south, and they crossed clandestinely into the "free zone" in October '41. After a few weeks in Lyon, they settled in the Haute Loire in the Massif Central, where they remained in relative safety through the rest of the war.

His mother was proved right in July 1942, just nine months after they escaped, when nearly 14,000 Jewish men, women and children were arrested in Paris by the French police and held in a sports arena under deplorable conditions. At the end of July, 3,000 children, by then separated from their parents who were already deported, were shipped to Auschwitz, where they were killed.

"We knew nothing about the Holocaust and had no idea of the fate of the millions of Jews deported to the death camps," he says. "After the war, when I learned about the fate of those Jews massacred by the Nazis, it was difficult for me to remain inactive," he says. "But what could a 15-year-old do?"

As shocked as he was, he realized that he could not change the past. He hoped perhaps someday he would find a way to ensure a better future, but he didn't learn how until many years later.

Bromberg completed his schooling, earned an engineering degree, and began working in the industry. It was then that he first encountered Scientology.

"I always thought there was something inside me that I couldn't define that had drawn me to the religion founded by the renowned L. Ron Hubbard," he says.

Bromberg describes the first Scientology conference he attended.

"I received answers that satisfied the need for understanding that I had as an engineer," he says. "In this sea of data and factors that life entails, I glimpsed a light that would open the way to understanding."

Bromberg continued his studies of Scientology, joined staff at a Scientology Church, and in 1996 he assumed a position at the Church of Scientology European Office of Public Affairs and Human Rights where he worked in interfaith relations-a position where he could take effective action to end religious discrimination against any faith and in any form. He worked with other religious leaders and scholars and, until last year at the age of 91, taught an annual course in Scientology to students at a university in Brussels.

"So I stayed with it, and it did change my life, my view of others, including my communication with them, my wife and children," says Bromberg. "I am still pursuing this quest today with Scientology. And I continue to discover true answers, 'engineer' answers, that enlighten my life."

Beyond Dents and Scratches: Body Shops Bear Witness to Preventable Tragedies

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The mangled frame of a silver sedan gleams under the overhead lights in a local body shop, a testament to human capacity for error. Replacing crumpled fenders and shattered windshields is a body shop's stock in trade, but the owners know these broken cars aren't just metal and plastic. They represent shattered dreams, lost limbs, and families ripped apart. They also suspect that all too often, these wrecked vehicles were the result of driving drugged or drunk. So when volunteers from Bridge Publications approached body shop owners and managers about displaying sets of The Truth About Drugs from the drug education initiative supported by the Church of Scientology, it not only piqued their interest, it gave them a way to save lives.

Their suspicions are borne out by the U.S. Department of Transportation, which states that some 31 percent of all U.S. traffic crash fatalities involve drunk drivers. And a recent Canadian study following the legalization of nonmedical cannabis found a 94 percent increase in the rate of traffic injuries involving the use of this drug.

One of the books published by Bridge Publications, Inc., City of Commerce-based publisher of the nonfiction works of best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard, is Clear Body: Clear Mind. In the book, Mr. Hubbard wrote: "Research demonstrates that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs."

In 2023, concerned about the recent spike in drug overdoses in Los Angeles, Bridge launched a local drug prevention campaign. Last Thursday, January 18, they visited auto body shops, tire shops, and other automotive businesses on nearby East Olympic Boulevard with sets of The Truth About Drugs in Spanish and English. These illustrated booklets contain information about the physical and mental effects of the most commonly abused drugs.

Shop owners and managers placed displays of these booklets on their counters for customers to take. Many shared personal stories of friends or relatives struggling with drugs and were happy to have something they could do to help.

An Educator Champions Youth for Human Rights to Build Peace and Ensure a Decent Life for Future Generations

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Rwanda evokes images of a tragic past marked by ethnic violence. But educator and human rights activist Ladislas Yassin Nkundabanyanga is determined to ensure a peaceful future for the country. He partners with Youth for Human Rights, an educational initiative supported by the Church of Scientology, to protect future generations and create a better life for all.

Born in 1974 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire), his family moved to Rwanda in 1980 and he was in secondary school when the ethnic violence exploded.

"My life means nothing without others," says Nkundabanyanga. "I lost my best friends during the genocide against Tutsis just because of their ethnicity. They were innocents. From that time forward I knew I had to teach youth about human rights."

Nkundabanyanga finished his studies and was working as an English teacher in 2004 when he founded the nonprofit Rwanda Youth Clubs for Peace. The group works with youth and the community to promote peacebuilding, tolerance, and conflict resolution through its annual Football for Peace Tournament.

But Nkundabanyanga knew education was the key to preventing any future genocide. Searching for information online, he found Pascal Nwoga, a Nigerian human rights activist featured on the Scientology Network original series Voices for Humanity.

Nkundabanyanga ordered educational materials from United for Human Rights, the parent organization of Youth for Human Rights, and received booklets, audiovisual properties, a banner, posters, shirts and caps. Best of all, he was sent an educator's package complete with lesson plan.

He has observed real change in the attitudes and actions of the children he has trained with the Youth for Human Rights materials. They not only can think for themselves and distinguish right from wrong, they are also putting what they learn into action.

"When we visit schools, students and teachers tell us that there is a big difference in discipline and school attendance since our visit," he says. They are campaigning to get poor kids to attend school, in keeping with Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 26: The right to education. They visit parents who feel they are too poor to send their children to school. They urge the parents to give their children the opportunity to learn skills that can help them rise up out of poverty. And their campaign is making progress; some of these children are now back in school.

Most important of all, children who understand these rights will not succumb to the social insanity that fuels ethnic violence and genocide. "This will be my legacy," says Nkundabanyanga. "This is the reason I do it."

The Help of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers in Times of Disaster Great and Small and Wherever It Occurs

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- It was just under a year ago on February 6, that a 7.8-magnitude earthquake slashed through southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border. According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the earthquake displaced or disrupted the lives of 15.73 million people in Syria and Turkey including 2.5 million children. Scientology Volunteer Minister disaster response specialists from Tel Aviv mobilized immediately and were soon joined by VMs from Pakistan, India and the United States.

This personal account from one Israeli Scientologist shows the impact of the program on survivors and its lasting impression on the volunteers.

The day after the earthquake, an Israeli Scientologist received a call from a friend at the Scientology Center in Tel Aviv saying they had received official permission to bring a team of Volunteer Ministers as part of the country's response to the earthquake. On the VMs' arriving in Turkey, AFAD, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, assigned them help organize donations in government warehouses and distribute them to those in need.

"We soon found that supplies were not making it to families in the surrounding villages so we took on that task," said the Volunteer Minister.

For many, every home in their village was destroyed, and they were living nearby in tents. Entering an area like this, the volunteers would first visit the mukhtar, the village chief, who helped direct distribution of supplies.

"Every place we went, we were met with tears and hugs," said the Volunteer Minister. "These people had lost everything but hope. As many as 30 people were living in a single tent." And they expressed their amazement: first, that the team came from Israel and also that they were doing this work voluntarily.

One day they were approached by an English nonprofit that had received a donation of thousands of frozen pizzas but did not have the manpower to deliver them to the refugees. "We made pizzas with them and went to distribute them. The joy of the children was heaven!"

It was the children the volunteers were most concerned about. Whenever possible, they would bring something special for them-candy, a biscuit, a toy. The children's lives had been severely disrupted by the disaster. They would play soccer and other games with the children-anything to help extrovert them and orient them in their new surroundings.

"I stayed much longer than the week I'd planned for because it was simply the right thing to do," said the Israeli VM. After he returned home, dozens more volunteers arrived from Scientology organizations to continue the work. "I cherish the privilege that fell to me of being able to help people who really needed it."

For the past seven decades, in times of trouble and despair, the bright yellow jackets of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers have been a symbol of hope and a promise of help.

Wherever they go, Volunteer Ministers disaster response teams deliver Scientology assists. These are techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that address the mental and spiritual factors in stress and trauma. The Scientology Volunteer Ministers program is a religious social service, developed in 1973. In an essay announcing the program, Mr. Hubbard wrote: "If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a Volunteer Minister and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance."

Their motto is no matter the circumstances, "Something can be done about it."

150 Weekly Food Drives at the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles to Help Local Families Cope

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- With inflation driving up food prices and some 30 percent of Los Angeles County families now experiencing food insecurity, Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles dedicate their Saturday mornings to helping fellow Angelenos cope.

According to a study by USC Dornsife Public Exchange, "nearly a third of Angelenos suffer from food insecurity-the highest rates since the COVID-19 pandemic began." The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank reports: "Hunger affects all groups of people regardless of education level, employment status or ethnicity. Due to the soaring costs of both housing and transportation in Los Angeles County, many people who work-even families with two incomes-often can't make ends meet or put enough good food on the table."

To help local families deal with this, every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Scientology Volunteer Ministers set up their bright yellow tents in the Church parking lot at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and L. Ron Hubbard Way, a few blocks west of the Vermont Ave. Metro station.

Cars pull up and pop their trunks or roll down the windows, and the Volunteer Ministers place boxes or bags of food inside. Over the past 150 weeks, they have placed packages of food in some 45,000 trucks, and carts or baskets of those arriving on foot.

The Church also organizes seasonal giveaways such as turkeys at Thanksgiving and gifts for local children at Christmas.

The iconic headquarters of the Church of Scientology of Los Angeles is designed to provide the ideal facilities for Scientologists on their ascent to higher states of spiritual freedom and to serve as a home for the entire community-a meeting ground of cooperative effort to uplift people of all denominations.

Bridge Publications Volunteers Share the Truth About Drugs With Popular East L.A. Food Trucks to Help Customers Make Smart Choices

COMMERCE, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Not only is the East Los Angeles crime rate higher than the U.S. average, the crimes are often drug-related. To help local vendors and residents cope with this problem, volunteers from Bridge Publications Inc., publisher of the nonfiction works of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, reached out to area food trucks and food stands this week to further extend their drug prevention campaign to the community.

Bridge volunteers brought sets of Truth About Drugs booklets to local businesses. The booklets explain in detail the harmful effects of drugs on the mind and body. They are provided free of charge by Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a nonprofit organization supported by the Church of Scientology. The initiative is dedicated to empowering youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.

Vendors were happy to take sets of the booklets and make them available to customers. Several of them told the volunteers they often see signs of drug abuse but didn't know what they could do about it. These booklets gave them a way they can now do something to help.

One food truck owner shared her own story with the volunteers. She is clean now but was on drugs in the past and knows very well the consequences of drug addiction and the importance of drug education.

Another asked the volunteers for additional booklets because she knows educating young people about drugs can save lives.

A security guard at a shopping center asked the volunteers for booklets. He often has to chase away people who are doing drugs in the parking lot. Now he can do something to help them.

Bridge began its drug prevention campaign last year to do something effective in the face of spiking overdose deaths in Los Angeles. In addition to distributing Truth About Drugs materials, Bridge is making drug education seminars available to businesses, schools and community groups. But Delvaux and her volunteers are optimistic because they know the Truth About Drugs educational materials of Foundation for a Drug-Free World are effective. The youth-friendly booklets and audiovisual materials provide factual information on the most commonly abused drugs. These properties and the free online drug education e-course enable people to make educated decisions about drugs. Armed with the facts and the opportunity to think for themselves on this vital subject, youth and adults are empowered to live drug-free. So the volunteers are determined and eager to expand the reach of their campaign.

Year in Review: International Association of Scientologists Awards Japanese Activist for Helping Secure the Rights of Victims of Coercive Psychiatry

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Each year, the International Association of Scientologists (IAS) presents the Freedom Medal to humanitarians whose work materially forwards the Aims of Scientology. Since 2007, as Executive Director of Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) Japan, Ogura has led his organization in a series of campaigns to expose psychiatric abuse and protect patient rights. He began with a massive educational campaign to raise awareness about psychiatry, bringing the CCHR Psychiatry: An Industry of Death traveling exhibit to 50 cities across the nation.

In a classic example of the need for the UN and WHO's recent guidelines to eliminate all forms of coercion in the field of mental health, CCHR Japan uncovered a shocking scene of abuse and cover-up in psychiatric hospitals. This included whistleblower footage of the brutal assault of patients in a Kobe City facility. Ogura brought this evidence to the city council, which petitioned national parliament for legislation to criminalize such abuse. CCHR Japan continued exposing abuse in city after city, culminating in 2022 with the government passing legislation providing legal protection to whistleblowers and mandating that anyone discovering patient abuse must report it immediately.

Ogura and his team also exposed the danger of psychiatric drugs that have been shown to increase violence and suicidality. Coupled with the often fatal side effects of these drugs was the dangerous practice of psychiatric "polypharma." This is the practice of prescribing multiple drugs to handle the frequent serious side effects of psychotropics. He educated MPs and teamed up with a medical professional to raise awareness of the issue. Media began running stories on the hazards of psychiatric drugs, including an exposé on national television. Finally, the Ministry of Health issued 66 black box warnings - the strictest and most serious type of warning that can be placed on a pharmaceutical product.

In the land where the proverb "See no evil: Hear no evil. Speak no evil" originated, under Yuzuru Ogura's leadership, CCHR Japan shattered the silence and exposed the psychiatric industry's crimes, ensuring the humane and decent treatment of his fellow citizens and setting an example for other nations that psychiatry can indeed be brought under the law.

Paris Scientologists Promote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the City of its Birth

PARIS, France /ScoopCloud/ -- It was in Paris at the Palais de Chaillot on December 10, 1948, that the General Assembly of the fledgling United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Eleanor Roosevelt, then a U.S. delegate to the UN and chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, described the document to the UN General Assembly as an "international Magna Carta for all mankind." They would ordinarily spend the day with a prayer for the new year at a temple or by visiting family. This year, on New Year's Day, faults that lay dormant for more than 3,000 years suddenly triggered a 7.6 magnitude earthquake. More than 200 died and tens of thousands were displaced. Once these immediate needs were cared for, the Volunteer Ministers began providing Scientology Assists, techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard that bring relief by addressing the emotional and spiritual factors in stress and trauma.

One man told the volunteer that for the first time since the disaster happened, he felt warm, refreshed and lighter. Aches and pains diminished. Others commented how the anxiety they'd been living with seemed to lift.

Reaching Out with Drug Prevention to Help Make 2024 a Safe, Healthy and Happy Year in Los Angeles

These booklets help people understand the hazardous effects of the most commonly abused drugs so they can make educated decisions about drugs and alcohol use.

The volunteers are inspired in this activity by Mr. Hubbard's research on the subject as contained in Clear Body Clear Mind, one of the books Bridge publishes, which states, "Research demonstrates that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs." It further states that drugs "can put people into a condition that not only prohibits and destroys physical health, but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being."

The UN Office on Drugs and Crime has found that drug education is one of the most effective and viable methods of addressing drug abuse and its harmful effects. According to their website, "For every dollar spent on prevention, at least ten can be saved in future health, social and crime costs."

In 2023, with spiking overdose deaths in Los Angeles, Bridge began a campaign to reach out in Commerce and nearby L.A. communities with the Truth About Drugs, the drug education and prevention initiative supported by the Church of Scientology. The Church makes these materials available free of charge to anyone wishing to use them.

Church of Scientology Budapest Explores the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Past and Future of These 30 Inalienable Rights

BUDAPEST, Hungary /ScoopCloud/ -- In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the local chapter of Youth for Human Rights and the Church of Scientology of Budapest organized and hosted a conference to explore the history of human rights and where we go from here.

Before the conference, guests were invited to tour the Church's Public Information Center, where they watched videos of Church-supported human rights initiatives that raise awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). These include public service announcements that bring each of the UDHR's 30 articles to life and a documentary on the history and state of these rights in today's world, where millions suffer from poverty, famine and the ravages of war.

Judit Szabó, an active supporter of UNICEF, spoke of the plight of children in war zones and how private citizens can create positive change by taking a stand. No matter one's nationality, political views or religion, she said, everyone can agree with and support these rights.

Historian and constitutional lawyer Dr. István Szikingerb pointed out the limitations of the UDHR: Although in theory, universal rights belong to everyone, it cannot be enforced as it does not have the force of law.

Attila Miklovicz, Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology Budapest, focused on trust as a vital element in achieving human rights and peace.

In an address to the UN Security Council in May 2023, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said: "Trust is the core of peaceful relations between and among human beings. It thrives on mutual respect and dependability; on truth; on justice; and on fair and equal treatment."

Miklovicz referred to a famous quote of author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, on this theme: "On the day when we can fully trust each other, there will be peace on Earth." He informed those attending the conference that human rights are a core principle of the Church of Scientology. Its creed begins by affirming: "We of the Church believe: That all men of whatever race, color or creed were created with equal rights."

The 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was a milestone. Never before had there been a clear statement of the rights everyone has simply because they are human. But surveys show few people know more than a few of these rights.

Education is vital if we wish to have a world in which human rights prevail, said Emőke Rajkay, head of the Youth for Human Rights chapter for Hungary. The purpose of Youth for Human Rights is to inspire young people to become advocates for tolerance and peace by educating them on the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

The elevation of a culture can be measured directly by the numbers of its people working in the field of aesthetics... The artist, day by day, by postulating the new realities of the future, accomplishes peaceful revolution."

One poet focused on the importance of people speaking up about what they believe. The right to do so is enshrined in Article 19 of the UDHR: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

The other poet spoke of her personal spiritual goals and what she has attained through her studies and practice of the Scientology religion - a right enshrined in UDHR Article 18: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion."

A guest commented that he never realized the importance of Article 20, freedom of assembly and association, until the COVID lockdown, when measures to protect people prevented free practice of this right. It was only when all restrictions were canceled that he realized what a toll this had taken on his sense of well-being and community.

No sooner had they recovered from a devastating flood that all but destroyed the city when the flood waters rose again and inundated the region. Learning the city was without power or clean water after Storm Daniel, the worst storm to hit the region in at least 80 years, Scientology Volunteers Ministers loaded a truck with drinking water, and navigating damaged roads, arrived in the town some 200 miles away with supplies, drinking water and a team of disaster-trained volunteers.

The overwhelming damage had left people feeling isolated and hopeless. In coordination with local authorities and the Orthodox and Evangelical churches, the volunteers helped clean up homes and businesses.

But a week later, Storm Elias struck. Residents described the damage as "biblical" and 10 times worse than what they'd just experienced, particularly in the suburb of Agria. Two rivers overflowed, engulfing the town and washing cars out to sea. When the water subsided, the town was submerged in mud.

Returning immediately, and joined by a team of Hungarian Scientologists, the Volunteer Ministers coordinated with civil protection and the fire department and began the grueling task of removing the mud and restoring order. More and more families and local volunteers joined in the project until every home in the village was mud-free and clean and they were ready to start planning needed renovation and restoration. Despite the despair in the aftermath of the storm, the town was imbued with a sense of community and optimism, ready to face the future.

How Two Humanitarians Are Protecting Millions of Mexican Youth from the Allure of the Cartels

For more than a decade, these two Scientologists have waged a counter-offensive to save youth from becoming victims of Mexico's drug cartels.

"We could see society decaying and knew we needed to do something," said Lucy. Never simply waiting for someone else to solve things for them, they made drug education and prevention their personal mission. As Salomon put it, "you are the one who makes the change."

They began by enlisting the help of fellow Scientologists to distribute the Foundation for a Drug-Free World's Truth about Drugs booklets in high-traffic locations such as sports events and at popular tourist spots. They organized sending out 180,000 copies of The Truth About Drugs through a catalog mailing by one of Mexico's top health and beauty companies.

Realizing the need to form partnerships to create greater impact, they shared the Drug-Free World booklets and public service announcements with the head of a leading transportation advertising firm, who broadcast these youth-friendly videos three times an hour, 19 hours a day throughout the metro system serving some 5 million people a day. They also reached millions with massive Drug-Free World billboards on underground train platforms and station waiting areas.

The Dabbahs brought the campaign to the regional commander of Mexico's Auxiliary Security Forces, who authorized Truth About Drugs workshops to train more than 2,200 officers on the program. Next, they trained Mexico City school safety police and provided seminars and workshops to more than 4,000 federal police officers. Working with law enforcement the Drug-Free Mexico team distributed nearly 200,000 Truth About Drugs booklets.

The event was broadcast on the UN website and viewed by human rights activists, educators and members of Youth for Human Rights chapters in countries across the globe.

On December 6 and 7, on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the UDHR, the UN Office of Human Rights in Geneva hosted a conference organized by the Association of Human Rights and Tolerance, an NGO with consultative status to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The Association is a human rights initiative affiliated with Youth for Human Rights and supported by the Church of Scientology of Milano.

Also participating was the director of the Church of Scientology European Office of Public Affairs and Human Rights. Held in the Palace of Nations, home of the United Nations Office at Geneva, the conference title was Human Rights: Know, Respect, Protect. It focused on religious freedom, enshrined in Article 18 of the document. Neglect, denial or violation of religious freedom is often referred to as "the canary in the coalmine"-meaning that it tends to predict the appearance and proliferation of other forms of hatred and human rights violations. The conference featured religious scholars who spoke of a project they support called the "Atlas of Religious or Belief Minority Rights in Europe." This project promotes education in all its forms as essential to ensuring human dignity by helping people understand and demand their rights and the rights of others.

When You Race in the Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic, Everyone is the Winner

Church of Scientology Los Angeles Hosts a Traditional Christmas Celebration for the Latin Community

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Dozens of members of the East Hollywood Oaxacan community walked down L. Ron Hubbard Way this week, dressed in traditional garb, in the third annual La Posada hosted by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles.

La Posada, meaning "The Inn" in Spanish, is a religious tradition dating to the 16th century. In the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, for nine days beginning December 16, men and women reenact the final steps of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem.

When the procession arrived at the entrance to the Church of Scientology Los Angeles, they sang their request for shelter. The reply was a warm welcome for them to come inside.

Those participating filed into the chapel, where traditional food and drink were served, followed by a performance of music and folkloric dancing.

Hispanic and Latin Angelenos represent nearly half the population of L.A. County. And the Church of Scientology Los Angeles partners with Oaxacan and other Latinx community leaders to help preserve and honor the culture of their homeland and ancestors.

In addition to its participation in this Christmas tradition, the Church also hosts annual celebrations of Central American and Mexican Independence Day in September, Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, in November, and other celebrations, seminars and cultural activities for the many and diverse communities that call Los Angeles home.

One reason the Church is so passionate about supporting programs like these is they represent an important right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Citizens Commission on Human Rights is More Determined Than Ever to End Coercive Psychiatric Practices

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), a nonprofit charitable mental health watchdog organization established in 1969 by the Church of Scientology, is determined to see to the immediate and full implementation of the UN and WHO direction to end psychiatric human rights abuse.

In October, the UN and WHO called for an end to psychiatric abuse, stating "Human rights violations and coercive practices in mental health care are still far too common. Involuntary hospitalization and treatment, unsanitary living conditions, discrimination and physical, psychological, and emotional abuse characterize many mental health services across the world."

Making their voices heard at psychiatric conferences, summits and congresses and bringing their protests to notorious psychiatric hospitals, CCHR intends to continue exposing and demanding an end to psychiatric abuse until these reforms are not simply words on a page but are fully accomplished. To begin with, CCHR is demanding the immediate end of electroconvulsive treatment, enforced drugging, restraints and involuntary commitment.

Among actions CCHR took this month:

CCHR Germany set up their traveling exhibit, Psychiatry: An Industry of Death, at the German Congress of Psychiatry in Berlin. They called for the immediate end to the use of electroconvulsive treatment. And they marched through the streets demanding immediate compliance with the UN's directions.

CCHR France brought their protest to the gates of Le Vinatier Psychiatric Hospital and the meeting of the National Congress of Psychiatry in Lyon.

CCHR Florida rallied at the "Technology in Psychiatry Summit" at the Marriott Water Street Hotel in Tampa to protect children from ECT and dangerous suicide and violence-inducing drugs. They are also collecting signatures on a petition to ban the use of electroshock on children as its use is "in direct contradiction to the World Health Organization's Resource Book on Mental Health, Human Rights and Legislation, which states, 'There are no indications for the use of ECT on minors, and hence this should be prohibited through legislation.'"

For decades, CCHR has been working to close a glaring gap in the European Convention on Human Rights that led to involuntary commitment of patients and the spread of coercive psychiatry.

After years of reporting on psychiatric abuse in 18 nations, CCHR received a formal invitation to the UN Consultation on Human Rights in Mental Health-the first time such a session had ever been held. CCHR presented expert testimony, vehemently calling for a ban on "coercion and the deprivations of liberty in mental health." When the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights put the mental health mandate before the UN Human Rights Council, the result heralded a sea change to preserve and protect human rights in the field of mental health.

CCHR chapters around the world are more determined than ever to end psychiatric abuse.

U.S. Scientology Volunteer Ministers in the Spotlight When a New Documentary Premiered on International Volunteer Day

After watching the film, a 28-year LAPD veteran expressed her appreciation for "how genuine the Church's help is for others."

A drug education activist who partners with the Church through its Truth About Drugs initiative was not aware of the Volunteer Ministers program before watching the film. "I was so impressed with what your Volunteer Ministers do around the world and what coordination you had in place for your logistics and all your actions during the pandemic."

The work of Scientology Churches around the world to educate their communities on how to stay well was what really impressed an ally who works with the Church on its human rights awareness initiative. "I can see how much help it provided to the different communities and areas where it was distributed."

Church of Scientology of Ventura Commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Ms. Crawford, a civil rights activist for more than 40 years, addressed such tough issues as inadequate education, homelessness and other inequalities affecting entire segments of our society. Although the UDHR was adopted 75 years ago, current news reveals horrific abuses and violations of the rights enshrined in the document: poverty and hunger, human trafficking, religious repression and war.

While the United States Department of State estimates the number of individuals trafficked into the U.S. each year to be 18,000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act suggests this figure to actually be approximately 50,000 per year.

Scientology Churches and their members believe human rights education can create social change. They are inspired by author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard who stated that "human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream."

Visitors to Winter Wonderland can expect holiday entertainment, face painting, and photos with Santa, who gives away toys and fiction storybooks. And those visiting this weekend, despite clear skies and 70-degree temperatures, were also treated to snow.

Angelenos and those visiting from out of town are invited to come and enjoy the fun through December 25. Winter Wonderland is open Monday through Thursday 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 2 to 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Also commended were the Demetra Borbonica Cultural Association, which supports and disseminates human rights in the field of the arts; the Prosperity and Social Promotion Association for its fight to free children from slavery; and Felix Adado and Hassan Batal who help orient immigrants to the customs and mores of their new home.

Ms. Morelli spoke of the heartache of displaced and stateless persons that she chronicled in her book Mani Che Poteggono (Hands That Protect). She had ample experience to draw from, representing the UNHCR at some of the world's most notorious refugee zones, including Sri Lanka, Georgia, Yemen, Somalia, Niger and Afghanistan. She also served in Greece when nearly a million refugees escaped to that country and began their trek through Europe in search of security and freedom.

Musicians Nour Eddine Fatty and Rashmi Bhatt brought far-away cultures to life through their musical performances. And actor Paolo Pesce Nanna spoke of his new charity to help victims of the Morocco earthquake.

Salameh Ashour, professor of Islamic culture, described how intolerance is not inherent - children have to be indoctrinated into prejudice. Raniero Ranieri, president of AVIS (Italian Association of Voluntary Blood Donors) Rome, stressed the importance of blood drives for securing the right to life for those needing transfusion. And Ikhtiar Gul Kaiam of Italy's Afghan community spoke of the plight of the women of his country.

From Mexico to Rome and from the UK to Aruba and South Africa, Scientology Volunteer Ministers, trained on the world's most effective sanitization procedures and equipment, mobilized to help houses of worship and their parishioners.

In Mexico, where almost 90 percent of the population is Christian, Volunteer Ministers sanitized houses of worship of diverse denominations from Methodist to Presbyterian and Roman Catholic to Evangelical. They made it possible for one of the world's most important pilgrimage sites to reopen - the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. They also trained church staff and provided equipment and supplies to ensure the basilica's continued safe operation.

The secretary to the Archbishop of Mexico City thanked the Church of Scientology for working "for the good of the people," making it possible for them to return to church in safety. "I think this work must be known," he said. "We do great work when we work together for the good of the community."

In Birmingham, England, where 20 percent of the population is Muslim, Scientology Volunteer Ministers sanitized mosques throughout the city and trained mosque staff to continue to do so. They also helped Hindu temples, Sikh gurdwaras, and a Greek Orthodox church, sanitizing more than 1.5 million square feet of houses of worship, making it safe for them to welcome parishioners back.

The administrator of one of the mosques described the volunteers as "the unsung heroes." The imam of another spoke of the team's passion to help. "Forget about the backgrounds, forget about the color, forget about the ethnicities," said another imam. "It's just for love, for peace, bringing people together. You are a role model... It's humanity serving humanity."

In Italy, Scientology Volunteer Ministers responded to a request from the Great Mosque of Rome - the largest mosque in the Western World. Volunteer Ministers sanitized more than 300,000 square feet of the facility.

"I saw cars arriving from all over Italy," said the imam. "It was an enormous joy to see how many volunteers the Church of Scientology mobilized." He described how this inspired "a society of love, a fraternal society, a society living in joy where everyone can benefit from collaboration."
