Grammy® Award-Winner Judith Hill’s latest album, Letters from a Black Widow, delves into her struggles after the deaths of Michael Jackson and Prince, two iconic artists who selected Hill for collaborations.

After Jackson’s sudden passing in June 2009, Hill sang lead on a number at Jackson’s memorial service, putting her on the worldwide map. Her rise to fame is explored in “20 Feet from Stardom,” the Oscar-winning documentary narrated by Morgan Freeman.

In her current album, Hill integrates theatrical elements and confronts the figure of the Black Widow that haunted her for so long. Inspired by a vision of a mountain representing her trauma, the album encompasses new stories of discovery, resistance, and redemption while maintaining her soul and funk foundation. The album features impressive guitar solos, with Hill explaining that the guitar has become a newfound voice for her during the songwriting process. He has worked with various artists such as Anita Baker, Ray Parker Jr., and Whitney Houston. His solo career took off in 1987 with the smooth jazz album Just Between Us, and he has since released several successful albums. Albright’s music defies easy categorization, as he draws from contemporary R&B and urban jazz influences. He aims to take his listeners on a journey through different musical textures, rhythms, chord progressions, and moods. Whether in concert, on the radio, or through his albums, he wants to convey that he is in a good place in his life.

South African-born, Grammy® Award-Nominated guitarist Jonathan Butler is known for blending R&B, pop, jazz fusion, and worship music. His breakthrough to a wider audience came in the late ’80s with hit singles like “Lies.” He has lived in England and California and remains a star in South Africa. Butler’s faith is central to his music, as many of his albums showcase his love of gospel music and groove-based jazz chops.

Born in Cape Town in 1961, Butler was signed to Jive Records at 16 and released his debut album, Introducing Jonathan Butler. Moving to England, he continued to find success with albums like Worship Project, Jonathan, Brand New Day, and Grace and Mercy. In 2018, he reinterpreted classic songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David on Close to You. His 2023 album, Ubuntu, celebrated the spirit and musical traditions of his home country.

Vocalist Sybil Evans Stages Jazz Comeback at Age 90 with the Sybil Evans Trio

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- While some industrious individuals are busy looking for their second act, 90-year-old Sybil Evans, longtime resident of Manhattan's Murray Hill section is still going strong, forging ahead into her third with the Sybil Evans Trio. The dynamic, Brooklyn-born and raised nonagenarian singer was inspired by her 90th birthday to return to her love of bringing her pop-jazz stylings before a live audience.

Evans, who began entertaining at the tender age of five, belting out "I Only Have Eyes for You," at a family wedding, left her aunts wanting for more and a lot more followed in the years ahead. Starring in college musicals while attending Syracuse University, singing in the late 1960s up through the early 1980s, Sybil would go on to a lengthy, successful 32-year high school teaching career while simultaneously juggling jazz gigs as a member of Musicians Union Local 802.

Retiring in 1989 from New York City's public school system where she taught high school social studies and rose to the role of assistant principal and social studies chair, the then 55-year-old went on to her second act, as a conflict coach, building a business where she trained Fortune 500 managers skills in negotiation, conflict resolution, and diversity. Despite a busy schedule as a sought-after speaker at national conferences and corporate events, Ms. Evans always carved out time to seek out local jazz clubs and perform a few numbers at open mic nights.

After penning "HOT BUTTONS: How to Resolve Conflict and Cool Everyone Down" (Harper-Collins, 2000), she spent two years delighting audiences on TV, radio, and national book tours - and every now and then, because music was so dear to her, she offered listeners snippets of a song.

In 2008, at 74, an age where many are winding down into retirement, Sybil released her debut CD, "Can't Get Out of this Mood," creating a sensuous, playful and deeply romantic aura with her unique stamp on the six memorable pop-jazz tunes featured on the extended play disc.

Through the years, the engaging and outspoken songstress -- hailed by legendary night club proprietor Jan Wallman for her "class and sophistication" -- performed in an array of notable New York City jazz clubs including Wallman's famed club on Cornelia Street, Johnny's Pub, Horn of Plenty, the Lenox Lounge, Porter's, Cleopatra's Needle, and Trudi Mann's Butterfield 8. While many iconic nightclubs came and went with the city's changing landscape, nothing had so great an effect on music and nightlife like the Covid-19 pandemic, which left Evans without an audience for the past several years.

Spurred on by her monumental birthday in March 2024, Sybil knew it was time to return to publicly performing the music that had meant so much to her in years past. While her trademark bob hairstyle is now grey, her glamorous flair and passion for performing pop-jazz standards remains.

On April 24, the nonagenarian chanteuse performed in the piano lounge of Murray Hill's NH Collection Hotel to an invited audience of friends and locals, including members of the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association, which she has belonged to for over a decade. The evening included such classics as The Thrill is Gone, Almost Like Being in Love, and Without a Song with entertaining stories of her life and musical career peppered in between.

"Sybil has such a vibrant presence and is an inspiration to us all, really, anyone at any age. Her passion and love of entertaining is so evident, it really makes you think about anything you've procrastinated doing a little differently," said Linda Levine, longtime neighbor and fellow Murray Hill Neighborhood Association member.

"It felt so great to be back, so natural, as if I never took a break," explained Ms. Evans. "It was an amazing, exhilarating evening performing some of my favorite songs. I can't wait for our next performance," she added.

Sybil's next engagement will be on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the annual Park Avenue Day celebration featuring a street festival. Admission is free and the Sybil Evans Trio (with Grant Richards on piano and John Sims on bass) is slated to perform from 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Park Avenue at East 36th Street. The outdoor festival runs along Park Avenue from 34th to 40th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

After his passing, Joan was faced with rebuilding not only her personal but her professional life as well. Joan felt it best to leave Detroit memories behind, temporarily moving to New York City's Harlem to spend time with her daughter and newborn twins. Still, the pain of her loss seemed almost insurmountable. But one night, the song appeared and instantly brought a measure of peace.

"It was almost like Marcus was helping me write it," Joan recalls. "The lyrics just came and started flowing. It almost felt like he was saying, 'Okay, that's enough. I understand, but you need to get back to doing what you do. And I'm still here. I'm not going anywhere.'" With its relatable lyrics, gorgeous melody, and a riveting performance by Joan, "I'm Not Going Anywhere" is poised to become an anthem heard at weddings, engagements, and homegoing services.

Also Producing Documentary on Marcus Belgrave

Inspired by the work of her late husband, Joan has also made it her mission to see Marcus Belgrave's story celebrated on the big screen. Joan is currently producing and appearing in a film documentary that spotlights his many contributions to the popular music landscape in a career that spanned some 50 years. Titled "Marcus Belgrave: All My Love," a nod to the tune "All My Love" that the Chester, Pennsylvania-born musician wrote in honor of his adopted hometown Detroit, the documentary features interviews with some 30 fellow musicians; a key scene will be a concert by Joan of some of Marcus's favorite tunes with other special guests before a live audience at Detroit's historic 400-seat Gem Theatre. The film is expected to be complete in the spring of 2023. "I want to get his story told on my watch," Joan declares. "I don't want somebody else telling his story."

A jazz and soul trumpet player who toured and recorded with Ray Charles in the 1950s before returning to the Motor City in 1963 to work with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the Temptations, and the Four Tops, continuing to tour and record. Marcus founded the Jazz Development Workshop, a school program that helped develop careers for generations of jazz artists. At Motown and the Workshop, he became a mentor to such talents as Ray Parker Jr., Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye at Motown, as well as jazz artists Geri Allen, Kenny Garrett, Regina Carter, and others. In addition to recording as a leader, Marcus's trumpet can be heard on recordings by Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Geri Allen, David "Fathead" Newman, B.B. King, and Wynton Marsalis. Named as Detroit's only Jazz Master Laureate, Marcus Belgrave was also inducted into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in Detroit in 2017 and has a city street, Marcus Belgrave Avenue, dedicated to him.

Facing Down Cancer with Faith and Purpose

Continuing to work while undergoing intensive treatment for an aggressive form of cancer has not been easy for Joan. Intensely spiritual as well as massively talented, she says she has been blessed to continue to make music, which has its own healing properties. And after maintaining silence around her diagnosis, Joan now feels it is important to speak out to support and encourage others.

"If I can help someone else to let them know it's okay, then it's okay," says Joan. "Just keep pushing. A tunnel is just that, a tunnel. You just keep walking through. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and before you know it, the light is shining."

Covenant Winery Summer Concert Series Debuts Memorial Day Weekend – Monday May 30

BERKELEY, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Covenant Winery Summer Concert Series kicks off Memorial Day weekend in Berkeley with acclaimed French/American jazz pianist, composer and arranger Franck Amsallem. Franck has recorded ten CDs under his own name as well as a collaboration, "New York Stories," with (Berkeley's own) Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, and Danny Gatton on Blue Note.

Born in Oran, French Algeria in 1961, Franck grew up in Nice, France. He spent 20 years in New York City, where he played as a sideman with Gerry Mulligan, Charles Lloyd, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Chambers, Maria Schneider, Kevin Mahogany and Harry Belafonte as well as Gary Bartz, Bobby Watson, Rick Margitza, and Blood Sweat and Tears.

In 1992 Franck released "Out a Day," an award-winning trio CD with the late bassist, Gary Peacock, and drummer Bill Stewart. The recording established him internationally as an in-demand jazz pianist and composer. Franck returned to France in 2001, and his most recent album recorded there is "Gotham Goodbye," a quartet featuring Cuban saxophonist Irving Acao. It has garnered superb reviews worldwide.

East Bay Connection

What brings Franck to Covenant Winery, in Berkeley? In the mid-1970s, young Franck was part of a jazz big band at the French National Music Conservatory in Nice, France. Also in the band was Covenant founding winemaker (and saxophonist), Jeff Morgan, who eventually performed with Franck for some 20 years in New York and Europe before trading in his horn for a wine thief and a second career as a winemaker. But in 1987, the two musicians were co-band leaders for the house band in Monte Carlo at Prince Rainier's Grand Casino in Monaco. Their last gig together was New Year's Eve 1995 at Gotham Bar and Grill in New York City.

That's the year Jeff officially retired from the music business to become a wine journalist and winemaker. During the recent Covid pandemic, Jeff had some time on his hands and started practicing his saxophone again. It had been more than 20 years since he'd touched the instrument. Today, a year later, Jeff has regained his playing chops. He'll be joining Franck at Covenant Winery for their first performance together in 27 years on May 30. Also performing will be Bay Area musicians Gerald Cleaver on drums and Jeff Denson on bass.

"Franck and I have been best friends for nearly 50 years," says Morgan. "But I've been steeped in wine for so long, I never thought I'd play music again - especially with Franck. It's a little scary to get on the bandstand with one of the world's top jazz pianists. But it's also really exciting! I'm looking forward to this long overdue musical reunion."

My hope was to create The New Standard, thus the title/concept of my debut CD."

A man of the Hip Hop/R&B generation, Tony is known for singing with Soul luminaries such as Gerald Levert, Lionel Richie, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and OutKast. However, the last 7 years have found him totally devoted to jazz, on a mission into bring the real deal to fresh young audiences in memory of his mother and Mr. Freddy Cole, at whose funeral he tearfully blessed in song. At a recent intimate performance during the Candlelight Series at Piedmont Park, Hightower sang a repertoire of all Ellington music show. Onstage, he spied a pair of pretty ladies who could not have been older than 22. His heart was gladdened. "When I say these things, I really mean it. My influences stretch from Mel Torme' and Marvin Gaye to Charlie Wilson (lead singer of The GAP Band) and Aaron Hall (lead singer of Guy)," Hightower concludes. "I'm finding ways to sing that makes all of that appropriate. That's what makes me unique as a Jazz singer."

The Asia America Youth Symphony is one of the premiere youth symphony orchestras of southern California. In performing a wide array of musical repertoire, students are challenged to master diverse musical styles ranging from classical to jazz and film scores.
