Right at Home Boston and North Receive Top Home Care Awards in 2020

SunBug Solar Celebrates the Milestone of Serving 2000 Customers

Keegan encouraged her husband to overcome that initial skepticism and look into the matter further.

"I figured there was no harm in learning more, so I went to one of their information sessions," said Hoogstraten. "I signed up for a site assessment and we ran the numbers."

When John and Eileen realized that the system would pay for itself in about seven years, they began the process to have his first solar energy system installed. They chose to invest in a plan that would deliver just enough energy to meet their home's consumption.

The system proved profitable for the energy needs of their home, but only when supplemented with the firewood John chops himself. Because John and Eileen plan to age-in-place, and are looking toward a time when chopping wood is no longer feasible nor desirable. Their plan to add air source heat pumps (ASHPs) for heating meant their electric load would increase, and wanted to add additional PV so as to avoid as much fossil fuel use as possible.

Again, through MassCEC they learned about the Solar Access Program, an effort to help homeowners install ASHPs in conjunction with solar. While they did not initially qualify, Dan Britton, a member of the residential solar design team at SunBug's Westfield location encouraged them to not give up. They might qualify in the next calendar year.

"They mentioned they were entering semi-retirement and expected their 2019 income might qualify, so I suggested they can re-apply after they file their 2019 taxes," said Britton.

By March of this year, John and Eileen confirmed their eligibility and the conversation with SunBug continued.

In the end, they opted for an additional 2.5 kW of roof mounted solar and a Tesla Powerwall battery for backup for when the grid goes down. SunBug system designer Dan Britton said it was a clear choice. "We decided to add a battery backup because all of the stars were in alignment: they have a dry, clean basement with space for a battery adjacent to their electric panel, they can include the battery system in the Mass Solar Loan to get additional income-based loan support, they can take advantage of the adder for batteries in the state's SMART solar incentive, and they can opt in to the utility's Connected Solutions program to get additional revenue to offset the battery cost."

SunBug is thrilled to be able to count such committed renewable energy enthusiasts at their 2000th customer, and as a show of appreciation is happily discounting the couple $2000 off their new solar electric system. Until now, these applications were difficult because traditional printing tools (inkjet, screen print, gravure) were inadequate to the task of making the small aligned features required in electronics. "Nano imprint lithography (NIL) solved the problem of the required small dimensions, and, with this invention, simultaneously solves the problem of alignment with the same level of precision."

Using this invention, an initial alignment layer is created with fluid channels which "wicks" the inks to where they are needed. Importantly, this wicking comes from larger reservoirs on the substrate which are easily filled by inkjet (flexo or screen print). The circuit then "virtually" builds itself with dimensions and alignment defined in the first imprint layer.

A complete electronic toolbox of resistors, capacitors, diodes, and transistors has been demonstrated. Carpe Diem is developing applications - NIL masters, and the requisite R2R NIL equipment - and is making those available to customers and sublicensees.

New Press Publishes Picture Book About Boston’s History

WEYMOUTH, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- "It Happened In Boston" (ISBN: 978-1733084703), a new children's board book introducing the history of Boston to young readers, is also the first in a series by Weymouth-based Great Pond Press, a publisher of books specifically created to interest children in history from a very young age.

"If you know the history of a place, you can't help but fall in love with it a little," Mike Pickett, founder and publisher of Great Pond Press, said. "I think that kids should grow up loving where they are from."

Pickett, originally from California, relocated to New England in his twenties and it was Boston's rich history that won him over.

"When I first moved here, I couldn't believe that I could be standing in the same place where the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party or the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. It made me feel connected to those events." Pickett says that he wants children to feel that kind of connection to history.

"I hope that kids can understand that history isn't something that happened in some far-off place or time," he said. "I hope they know that wherever they are, that place has a history and they are a small part of it."

"It Happened In Boston" highlights episodes from Boston's history ranging from the city's founding by John Winthrop to Paul Revere's famous midnight ride to the ambitious and overbudget Big Dig. Recounted in a way that is both appropriate and engaging for children ranging from newborns to kindergarteners, "The book focuses on the good stuff," Pickett said. "There will be plenty of time for children to learn about the rest of the city's history as they get older."

Pickett adds, "One of my favorite writers is David McCullough, and I recently heard him say that we are raising historically illiterate children. I hope that our books can start children on the path to being historically literate."

Pickett holds a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin and currently works as an attorney in Boston. But before going to law school, he earned a master's degree in Publishing and Writing from Emerson College. "Starting Great Pond Press has allowed me to finally put all the knowledge that I gained during my master's degree to good use," Pickett said.
