The Learning Center for the Deaf Outpatient Audiology Clinic Announces Significant Expansion of Services and Coverage

TLC's Audiology Clinic provides comprehensive audiological and hearing aid services to the MetroWest community and beyond. The clinic was recently awarded the 2019 Best of the Best MetroWest Award for Audiology services in the area. Services include complete diagnostic hearing tests, analysis of middle ear function, and hearing aid consultations, including sales, fittings, service, and repairs. Study Identifies Boston’s Top-Rated Plastic Surgeons

BOSTON, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- An analysis of multiple online rating sources has shed light as to whom Boston-area plastic surgical patients consider the area's top plastic surgeon. According to actual patient ratings gathered from five different rating platforms, Dr. Jeffery Spiegel, of The Spiegel Center, was ranked as the area's top plastic surgeon, receiving more five-star ratings from his patients than any other plastic surgeon.

The study, conducted by John C. Anderson Ph.D., a former professor of management at UCLA and consultant in the plastic surgery industry, compiled patient ratings from five key platforms-Google, Facebook, RealSelf, Vitals.com, and RateMD.com, looking specifically at which physicians had received five-star ratings from patients, and for which procedures.

Dr. Spiegel received 221 five-star ratings. The next surgeon with the most five-star ratings, Dr. Jeffrey Darrow, earned 125 top marks from his patients. Others, with fewer top marks, included Boston plastic surgeons Dr. Sean Doherty, Dr. Richard Bartlett, Dr. Samuel Lin, Dr. George Volpe, Dr. Leonard Miller, Dr. Summer Slavin, and Dr. Joseph Russo.

The number of five-star reviews earned by the surgeons ranged from 12 to 221.

In addition, the study looked at which procedures earned the doctors the most top reviews. These tended to flow along the lines of each practice's specialty. Dr. Spiegel, for example, was ranked highest in facial plastic surgery (rhinoplasties, face lifts, injectables, blepharoplasties, and facial feminization surgeries).

Other surgeons were noted for their skills in breast augmentation and reduction, injectables, rhinoplasty, and gynecomastia.

Patient ratings are one indicator of physician quality along with board certification, academic credentials, and experience.

Coding School Start-Up for Kids and Teens Finds Success in Massachusetts, Opens New Location in Natick

NATICK, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- CS Recitations, a start-up coding school for kids and teens, announces the opening of a new location on Michigan Drive in Natick. What started in 2017 as a modest one-room school aimed at providing computer science classes to local students has doubled enrollment every year, leading to the opening of a new, larger facility this September.

Already some classes are waitlisted. CS Recitations is the vision of Founder David Horrigan, an MIT-educated computer scientist with a desire to share his passion for coding with area youth. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities for his own children, he decided to create the school to fill what he perceived to be a growing need.

"We thought there would be a lot of interest. The growth has been really affirming and we are working hard to make our programs accessible to as many children as possible," said Horrigan.

Horrigan points to some unique aspects of CS Recitations's program that he believes are contributing to its strong growth. After years of research, Horrigan and his faculty developed a comprehensive curriculum for grades 2 through 12, offered at all levels from beginner to college level.

In contrast to camps and workshops, CS Recitations (CSR) offers a structured year-long program that children attend from September through late May.

"They come once per week for one to two hours, and they come back year after year. We have families who've been with us every year since we opened," said Horrigan. "While a one week program may be fun, you can't really learn skills or benefit from a computer science education in such a short time -- just like you wouldn't take one week of piano lessons, or two weeks of karate. It takes time to develop."

New Visual Survey Shows Over 27 percent Occupied with Devices

The magazine examined behavior at various urban crossroads across the country, categorizing different modes of digital distraction. Overall, 17,102 people were tallied in 27 locations within 18 metro areas from coast to coast. Out of those, 27.86% were seen holding, looking at, listening to, or speaking into a device. The most distracted places in the survey were the downtowns of Detroit and Salt Lake City, clocking in with device rates of 49.15% and 46.20% respectively. The least occupied with devices? San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood at 8.46% and El Paso's El Segundo Barrio at 11.29%.

The survey appears in an article about the smartphone's effect on public space in Issue 3 of The Technoskeptic. Author Mo Lotman suggests that the smartphone's vice-grip on human attention and its attendant shattering of the commons are the unspectacular, but ultimately more harmful, repercussions of a culture lost to tech addiction.

2019 Lupus Insight Prize Awarded to Dr. Ignacio Sanz: Recognizes Studies of Harmful Immune Cells in Lupus

BOSTON, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Lupus Research Alliance has awarded its 2019 Lupus Insight Prize to Ignacio Sanz, MD, for discovering that certain little-understood immune system cells are a major source of the harmful proteins that promote lupus symptoms. His work could spark new treatments for the disease and help doctors determine which patients could benefit from current drugs. Dr. Sanz is a Mason Lowance Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

The award was announced June 19 at FOCIS 2019, the 19th Annual Meeting of the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS). The $100,000 award recognizes a major, novel insight and/or discovery with the promise of changing thinking about lupus as well as a high probability of generating further advances in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

"Dr. Sanz has already made vital contributions to understanding the role of B cells in lupus," said Kenneth M. Farber, President and CEO, Lupus Research Alliance. "We very much look forward to his next advances afforded by our Lupus Insight Prize."

Dr. Sanz's discoveries were a breakthrough for understanding how certain B cells, a type of immune cell, promote lupus. B cells are key for the disease. Their normal job is to produce proteins called antibodies that protect against bacteria and viruses. But in lupus, B cells release antibodies that trigger damage to patients' own tissues. Researchers have known that some B cells must mature in specialized parts of the lymph nodes or spleen before they can make these destructive antibodies.

Dr. Sanz showed that many damaging B cells follow a different route and identified the molecular mechanisms that underpin this B cell activation pathway. He and his team were the first to apply a comprehensive characterization of these cells using cutting-edge techniques such as multidimensional flow cytometry analysis of DNA in lupus patients. They found that this group of B cells was prevalent in patients who were undergoing lupus flares, particularly African-Americans. Dr. Sanz and his colleagues also found that, in contrast to healthy subjects, the lupus B cells were ready to transform into cells that produce harmful antibodies, even in patients without active disease.

"I thank the Lupus Research Alliance for recognizing my work, and I am eager to pursue further research with the potential for improving patient treatment," said Dr. Sanz.

Researchers may be able to build on Dr. Sanz' discoveries to develop new drugs that could reduce patients' risk and severity of disease flares. The results could also help doctors identify subsets of lupus patients that are more likely to benefit from therapies that destroy B cells using existing drugs. In addition, the cellular and molecular make-up of the abnormal lupus B cells should help identify new therapeutic targets.

The Boston Bruins are ready to make this day a true celebration. The mascot 'Blades' will be there to bring on the party. Free breakfast, snacks and activities add to the fun for all ages. Plus, Assembly Row is an outdoor space to shop and dine, so participants can make it a full day's outing.

Wheelchair accessible, the Walk route is 3.2 miles along the scenic Mystic River. Walkers are encouraged to go at their own pace and cover their own distance; it is not necessary to complete the route.

Solar Incentives in Detail

These incentives together create an irresistible savings situation for most Bay State owners. However, both are becoming more limited over time. And the magic number is 4 percent - where each program's value is decreasing in 4 percent increments.

The SMART program provides incentives to owners by setting tariffs for in state utilities to pay for solar power generated by homeowners. Aimed at facilitating an additional 1.6 Gigawatts in new capacity, there are 8 declining blocks of tariffs, each block covering approximately 200 Megawatts of added solar. When each utility satisfies one block, new applicants are allocated to the next block, being assigned approximately 4 percent less value for the energy generated.

According to Michael Tanghe, CEO of SunRa Solar, "The beauty of this new renewable energy program is that it allows us to more accurately predict what each customer will save throughout the life of the program. The biggest variable now is timing. We cannot predict which block a customer will fall into until the papers are signed."

On January 1, 2020, the ITC will also decrease from 30 percent to 26 percent on schedule. That reduction is not trivial and can reduce an owner's benefit by as much as a thousand dollars, and more.

"As long as a customer's home works for solar, and most do, it is practically automatic in Massachusetts to provide a system that immediately reduces energy expenses - literally in the first month," says Mr. Tanghe. "And there is a great added bonus of significantly reducing a household's environmental impact at the same time."

Owen Anketell:
Owen Anketell trained at UHP, and during the summer of 2017 hand cycled 2,365 miles from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida to promote awareness for his own organization - Adaptive Sports Awareness. Owen was born with hereditary spastic paraplegia, so weak leg muscles necessitates using a wheelchair, but this has not stopped him from succeeding as an athlete.

Owen continues to be actively involved in sports. He attends the University of Arizona which has one of the best adaptive sports programs in the country. Owen, along with his best friend and cousin, averaged 50 miles a day during their ride to Florida.

Nick Giovinazzo:
Nick Giovinazzo, Best Buddies and Special Olympics Massachusetts participant, is another remarkable adaptive athlete at UHP who has attained impressive feats. Nick can deadlift more than 300 lbs., bench press 185 lbs. and can back squat nearly twice his bodyweight.

More than an impressive athlete, Nick is an incredible advocate of inclusion; participating in the Best Buddies Football Challenge and starring in their commercials alongside New England Patriots Superstar Tom Brady.
