Students Complete HBCU Green Fund’s Fellowship – Primed for Growing Opportunities in Clean Energy

ATLANTA, Ga. /ScoopCloud/ -- After successfully completing a rigorous fellowship that exposes students to opportunities in clean energy and sustainability, Serena Echols was awarded an internship assisting a community in Florida that was exposed to contaminated groundwater. One of twelve students selected by the HBCU Green Fund to participate in their inaugural Atlanta University Center (AUC) Fellows Program, Echols will document the experiences of the residents and seek resources for long overdue environmental justice.

A partnership between the HBCU Green Fund and the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), the AUC Fellows Program connects students at Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College with entrepreneurs and professionals that provided training, mentoring and internships in energy and STEM industries. A grant to RICE from the U.S. Department of Energy provides resources for the program.

"The inaugural AUC fellowship was a huge success," said Illai Kenney, national program director, HBCU Green Fund. "Whether you look at the increase in catastrophic climate events or the impacts of oil on the global economy, the critical need for a swift transition to clean energy is clear. This program will help expand the pipeline of skilled professionals required to achieve energy independence. We're proud that AUC Fellows are primed to train their peers, educate their communities, and capitalize on emerging green infrastructure opportunities."

The students were introduced to various energy careers and gained hands-on training in renewable energy technologies. They conducted energy audits of buildings in Atlanta, received instruction on electric vehicle charging stations, and learned to mount solar panels. The program emphasized information on starting an energy-related business and identifying business opportunities. The fellows also attended the annual BIPOC Climate Justice Dialogue, a discussion between climate justice scholars, organizers, academics, and government officials about opportunities in President Biden's Justice40 Initiative.

"It was very helpful to be able to question someone who works in sustainability daily and has created a profitable business in the area," adds Echols, an environmental science major headed into her senior year at Spelman College. "I am excited about the internship the HBCU Green Fund helped me secure at the University of South Florida where I will explore the cultural construction of risk in a peri-urban African American community whose groundwater was contaminated by chlorinated solvents from the former American Beryllium Corporation site."

The AUC Fellows were trained by successful Black entrepreneurs and executives who work in the energy sector; many of them are also HBCU graduates. Dr. Anthony Kinslow, CEO of Gemini Energy Solutions; Sheryl E. Ponds CEO of Dai Technologies; Gilbert Campbell, CEO of Volt Energy Utility LL; Kristal Hansley, CEO We Solar Energy; and the WDC Solar team provided instruction. AUC faculty mentors Dr. Armita Davarpanah and Dr. Fatemah Shafiei (Spelman College), Dr. Cynthia Hewitt (Morehouse College), Dr. Olu Olatidoye and Dr. Myron Williams (Clark Atlanta University), along with Spelman Facilities Director, Arthur E. Frazier.

Appalachian Gap Distillery Becomes Country’s First Climate Neutral Certified Distillery

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. /ScoopCloud/ -- In response to the urgency of the climate crisis, Appalachian Gap Distillery is delighted to announce that it is officially Climate Neutral Certified. All of its brands -- AppGap, Split Spirits, and Vermont Creemee Liqueurs -- proudly share the certification.

These spent grains are then turned into clean power at a local biodigester, which supports the local green economy.

Lars adds that "when people come visit our tasting room, they pass six solar arrays that provide the majority of our electricity and symbolize our commitment to sustainability." These panels help to minimize emissions from direct operations.

The carbon footprint measurement process revealed there was an opportunity to reduce emissions from powering the steam system, which uses natural gas. As a result, Appalachian Gap Distillery has already made the switch to using renewable natural gas derived largely from local farms to further reduce its direct emissions.

"We've done a tremendous amount to make energy efficient decisions to keep our operation's' climate footprint small," says co-founder Chuck Burkins. "In order to give our customers the confidence of knowing that each bottle is truly carbon neutral from grain to glass, we rigorously measured emissions within our supply chain and offset those we cannot control directly."

Appalachian Gap Distillery offset 59 metric tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent by supporting nature-based projects like encouraging sustainable agriculture and protecting important ecosystems. In order to further reduce supply chain emissions, the distillery has switched to using 100% recycled glass bottles that have not had their natural greenish hue bleached with harmful chemicals and high heat processes.

Will Drucker, AppGap's Head of Hustle, was drawn to join Appalachian Gap Distillery because of the distillery's commitment to sustainability and the exceptional quality of their spirits. "It was evident that they adhered to the highest standards of quality and took great care throughout the entire spirit production process, and that this care extended to the natural environment and the community as a whole," says Will.

Washington Court House City Schools expects to save at least $81,500 annually through partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA

TIPP CITY, Ohio, Aug. 4, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Washington Court House City Schools has partnered with Energy Optimizers, USA, to launch an energy conservation project that will improve energy efficiency at all six of the district's buildings, generating an expected $81,500 in annual savings.

"In our community, we place a high value on ensuring that taxpayer dollars are invested in our classrooms and our students to the greatest extent possible," said Superintendent Matthew McCorkle. "With this project, we're going to stretch taxpayer dollars even further by ensuring we gain the most efficient use out of our electrical and HVAC systems."

Energy efficient measures will include:
- Replacement of interior lighting and exterior lighting with LED technology to improve energy efficiency while enhancing building safety, appearance and security;
- Retro-commissioning of the HVAC systems and advanced energy conservation management to ensure the equipment is performing to standards;
- Protecting critical systems like food storage and servers through demand response shedding;
- Installation of variable frequency drives in classrooms to cut electricity waste;
- Replacement of outdated equipment with two new high-efficiency furnaces, a new HVAC system and ductwork, and building envelope and insulation enhancements in the Field House.

The $697,550 project will be funded through the Ohio School Facilities Commission's House Bill 264 (HB 264) program, enabling the district pay for the improvements using utility savings. The actual cost for the project may be lower after utility rebates are factored in. The projected savings of $81,500 are guaranteed for three years.

Cambridge City Schools expects to save more than $133,000 annually through partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA

TIPP CITY, Ohio, Jan. 7, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Cambridge City Schools has partnered with Energy Optimizers, USA, to complete an energy conservation project that is expected to save the district $133,111 annually, allowing for more dollars to be directed to students and classrooms.

Cambridge City Schools will upgrade the lighting, building controls and air filtration systems at all seven of its buildings, placing the district firmly ahead of the curve for energy efficiency and improved air and lighting quality. Funding is provided through the Ohio School Facilities Commission's House Bill 264 program, enabling the district to make these cost-cutting improvements at no expense to taxpayers.

As part of the project, Energy Optimizers, USA, will:
* Replace interior lighting with more efficient lamps and remove unneeded lamps to cut waste;
* Replace exterior lighting with LED technology to improve energy efficiency while enhancing building safety, appearance and security;
* Install advanced energy management controls to provide real-time, web-based monitoring and management of the district's HVAC systems;
* Install dynamic air filtration systems to improve indoor air quality and decrease maintenance- and energy-related costs;
* Install energy-saving features to the kitchen exhaust fans and coolers
* Add IT enhancements to reduce the electronic plug load;
* Fund an educational Green Team to promote STEM principles in the classroom.

The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2015. Projected energy savings are guaranteed, and the payback for the upgrades is just over 11 years.
