It traces how she traveled from her home in Canada to the hills of Hollywood to pursue a career in acting/stunts and recounts how bipolar disorder repeatedly sent her packing from Los Angeles. After failed attempts to develop this dream, she finds herself in a prison system that ignores protocol for inmates with mental illness.

"The whole experience was horrific," she says. "Writing this book was cathartic and helped with the overwhelming anxiety and PTSD that resulted from this damaging ordeal. I never had that before."

For example, a 5150 is a section of the California Welfare and Institution Code (Thomson Reuters, 2017) that authorizes a mental health practitioner or an officer to involuntarily confine an individual suspected to have a mental disorder who is gravely disabled, a danger to themselves, or a danger to others. The individual can be brought into custody for up to 72 hours for assessment or placed into a treatment facility.

"Unfortunately, I didn't receive a 5150 even though the arresting officer knew I was mentally ill," Boszko explains. "Celebrities such as Amanda Bynes, Britney Spears, Mischa Barton and Kanye West have all received a 5150."

Sandra's incarceration lasted 10 days while her family struggled to locate her and to convince the courts that she was in need of medical care. During that time, she experienced abusive guards, isolation and neglect.

And according to L.A. County Jail stats, she's not alone. The County of Los Angeles reports that 70 percent of the inmate population has a serious medical or mental illness upon initial assessment and at least 30 percent of its inmates have a mental illness.

"This experience left me deeply traumatized and I knew I had to share this story with others. During the writing process, I began to heal," she says. "I want people to understand mental illness from the inside out and to help the stigma go away. I truly hope this memoir helps others to realize that they are not alone in their struggles."

Sandra is an award-winning finalist in two categories - Social Justice and Memoirs (Personal Struggle/Health Issues) in the 2021 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the world's largest book awards program for independent publishers and self-published authors.

‘Circumcision Scar’ is a New Memoir Revealing How the World’s Oldest Religious Sacrifice Became a Dubious Medical Mandate

I felt raped by a religion I wanted nothing to do with and needed to reclaim ownership of my own body. I've been with my husband 30 years, and he never knew what I'd done until he read my book."

Jackson equates circumcision as a human rights violation and outright sexual abuse. "The doctor credited with making circumcision mainstream in America was obsessed with circumcising women too. He believed circumcision would cure mental illness, blamed a patient's foreskin for his brain tumor, and said circumcision was a humane alternative to castration in curing black men of their predisposition to be rapists."

Jackson believes readers of his book will refuse to hear the facts. "Men are oblivious to the fact that their penis was cosmetically altered at birth, and doctors are trained to uphold that lie. Seventy percent of medical books intentionally omit foreskins, and doctors are willfully forcing their religion onto a nation of free people."

Jackson's book debunks the alleged health benefits of circumcision and states comparing it to a vaccine for HIV/AIDS is delusional. "They used that exact argument for circumcision and syphilis a hundred years ago, but the statistics don't hold up. Foreskins aren't the plague. They're a natural part of the male anatomy."

Jay J. Jackson lives in Los Angeles and hopes his story will inspire parents to protect children over protecting religion. "No parent wants to believe they've harmed their child for no reason, but that's the lie these doctors have forced upon us. Every child has the right to be who they were born to be."

"We published three titles in 2018 and set a goal at that time to expand to eight titles by 2021; we're one year ahead of schedule," Vonda Puckett, founder and business manager, Aubade Publishing, says. "That's very exciting."

And, Vonda, who is a graduate of Weber State University, has a double major in history and English, and is an especially qualified judge of historical fiction, is not going it alone. Her husband, Joe Puckett, and daughter, Cosette, are also committed to this niche family business.

"Aubade Publishing is really a labor of love," Joe says, who is also the business's chief editor. "We all get to indulge our reading addiction as part of our work."

Cosette, a 2019 English graduate from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, manages acquisition, performs editing, designs covers and layouts, manages the social media sites and illustrates some of the books.

"We were flooded with manuscripts," Cosette says, "but the writers we chose for publication really grabbed us with their style and content - it's quite an eclectic group. We're also very happy to publish Rochelle Distelheim for a second time."

The books that Aubade Publishing publishes are rooted in the family's favorite literature genres: fantasy and science fiction, Gothic, historical and literary fiction, poetry and memoirs.

"I used to read so much as a kid that my parents would ground me from reading if I got in trouble," Cosette says, "but now I get to read as part of my job and be involved in the creative process with these fabulous writers."

In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Eva Lynd's image was seen by millions of American men and women in TV shows, plays and movies, on the covers of men's magazines and women's romance and confession magazines, in paperback cover paintings, and in the wild cover and interior illustrations used by men's adventure magazines (MAMs).

Born Eva Inga Margareta von Fielitz, Eva is a bona fide Swedish Countess. She's the daughter of Count Asti von Fielitz and Countess Margareta von Fielitz. Eva's mother brought her from Sweden to New York City in 1950, at age 12.

By age 16, she was winning beauty queen contests. Soon, under the stage name Eva Lynd, she was appearing in popular TV shows produced in New York, such as the Steve Allen Show, Garry Moore Show, Perry Como Show and Jonathan Winters Show.

After moving to Hollywood in 1959, she appeared in various TV shows, including the "Thin Man," "Peter Gunn," "The Texan," "Hogan's Heroes," "Desilu Playhouse," "Bourbon Street Beat," and "Cagney & Lacey." She also had roles in several movies, including the 1960 cult horror movie "The Hypnotic Eye" and the 1975 caper film, "That Lady From Peking," in which she co-starred with Carl Betz, Nancy Kwan and Bobby Rydell.

One of Eva's most-seen roles was as the sexy woman who emerges from the tube in Brylcreem's 1964 "Girl the Tube" TV commercial (https://youtu.be/gC4y5ubsWSI), which Entertainment Magazine named of the "50 Best Commercials of All Time."

In the '50s and '60s, Eva was a popular model for pinup magazine photos taken by many top glamour photographers. She was also a go-to model for several top illustration artists who did cover paintings for paperbacks and cover and interior artwork for men's adventure magazines.

In some MAM cover paintings and interior illustrations, Eva is a damsel-in-distress being tormented by Nazis, Commies or motorcycle gang members. In others, she is an alluring femme fatale or a gun-toting heroine.

Eva is now 82 and living in Hollywood with her husband of over 40 years, veteran actor Warren Munson. Eva and Warren both still act occasionally and sometimes work together, as they did in a recent Campbell's Soup commercial in which they played grandparents.

Fuhr discovered the memoir via Anna David's coaching program for writers, which walks 10 students at a time through the process of writing and selling their book proposals. Out of each group of 10, David and a committee select one author to receive a meeting with agent Alexis Hurley of Inkwell Management and publisher Fuhr. While there's no guarantee of publication, Fuhr leapt at the opportunity to be the first to publish Griggs.

Griggs, an Oregon-based attorney, is a bit shell-shocked by his sudden transition into a creative career, admitting he applied for the coaching program solely so he could find catharsis through unearthing his most challenging experiences.

"After more than forty years of keeping dark secrets buried deep within me, I had two choices," Griggs says. "I could either lose my sanity and likely die an active addict, or I could release them. Fortunately, I was guided to release them."

David admits that selecting Griggs for the meeting with Hurley and Fuhr was a bit like Sophie's Choice. "I somehow keep ending up with the most talented students I could have imagined," she says. "They're all survivors who have incredible stories to tell. But ultimately, I felt I had no choice but to help the world discover this book."

Glenn Koenig Celebrates Release of his First Book, ‘A Man Wearing a Dress’

The book is primarily a memoir, but also includes an important section regarding the author's optimism in today's uncertain times.

"Looking at the big picture, I am very positive about where we're headed, even if it doesn't seem that way right now," Koenig says. "I think it's natural for people to feel a lot of anxiety these days, but I'm convinced that we're going to see our way through it." He has a strong belief that we make more progress through collaboration and mutual support than we do by blaming others.

A resident of Arlington for over 40 years, authoring a book represents a new stage in Koenig's life. Previously, his career included work as a software engineer, a video producer, and a technical writer. He has also devoted significant time to volunteering in Arlington, including sixteen years as an elected Town Meeting Member, serving on the Vision 2020 steering committee, and as the first president of ACMI, Arlington's Community Media studio.
