Lowell Chamber Orchestra to premiere new edition of Julia Perry’s symphony

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- On Sunday, February 18, 3 p.m., The Lowell Chamber Orchestra will present the first Massachusetts performance of Julia Perry's "Symphony for Violas and Basses," from a new edition by LCO's music director Orlando Cela.

The new edition looks to celebrate Perry's centenary of her birth, and provide a clear template from which other ensembles can perform this work from one of America's most influential and underappreciated composers.

"This work is a fabulous example of Perry's modernist style," says LCO music director Orlando Cela. "One can hear Perry as a mature composer, masterfully handling complex rhythms and harmonies, and presenting a piece that moves from the majestic to the introspective, and then to an electrifying ending."

The concert will also include a world premiere by Martin Max Schreiner - his score being one of the winners of the 2023 LCO Call-for-Scores - and conclude with a rendition of Béla Bartók's "Music for String Instruments, Percussion, and Celesta."

Two soloists, Yukiko Shimazaki on piano, and Nikki Huang on marimba - winner of the 2023 LCO Concerto Competition - will also be featured.

Barr's new Creative Vitality grant program builds on the Foundation's racial equity work to date and their commitment to centering BIPOC artists, organizations, and communities in their program strategies. Creative Vitality is an opportunity to expand the understanding and support of the BIPOC arts ecosystem more broadly by supporting arts organizations.

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra will receive funding over three years to expand the understanding and appreciation of BIPOC composers in classical music.

"The Lowell Chamber Orchestra will use this grant to further include the work of BIPOC artists," says LCO's Music Director Orlando Cela. Guided By Voices Fans to Celebrate Band at Special Boston-Area Event

BOSTON, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The venerable indie rock band Guided By Voices (GBV) recently celebrated 40 years of music with several thousand fans in its hometown of Dayton, Ohio, performing two sold-out shows at the Dayton Masonic Center over Labor Day weekend. In the spirit of bringing that celebration to Boston, four local fans (calling themselves the Textbook Committee) have organized Forever Since Heedfest, which brings three GBV tribute bands and diehard fans from near and far to Warehouse XI in Somerville, MA this February.

The "Dayton GBV40" weekend saw some fans attending from as far away as Australia, and the city of Dayton was alive with the camaraderie of fans that insist online - tongue-in-cheek - that the fanbase is #notacult. In between performances, hundreds trekked to the Bandshell at Metro Park, the site of the first Guided By Voices show in 1983, and otherwise joined together in groups small and large to celebrate the band and its history. One local fan even opened his home to about 100 fans, who took in an afternoon performance from Teenage FBI, a GBV tribute band led by superfan Stephen Risley.

On February 10, the New Jersey-based Teenage FBI will join GBV tribute bands Cul de Sac Kids of Pittsburgh and hometown headliner Guided By Choices for Forever Since Heedfest, a regional celebration intended to bridge the gap between the annual Labor Day weekend "Heedfest" fan gatherings in Dayton. Tickets went on sale November 10 and in GBV fan fashion are moving fast, with fans from as far away as Seattle confirming attendance.

While loose discussion of a Boston event has circulated among local fans for several years, the seeds of Forever Since Heedfest, a playful riff on the band's 1986 debut EP Forever Since Breakfast, were firmly planted over the Dayton GBV40 weekend. Earlier this month, longtime fans Allison Ryder, Brian Galante, Dan Cortez and Tim Bugbee formed the Textbook Committee to plan and promote the event. The task is not a revenue-generating initiative; it is simply a labor of love for four friends with full-time jobs unrelated to concert promotion.

"Guided By Voices has a special community of diehard and casual fans that come together for shows throughout the United States and share a common bond - a love of the songbook and the band members themselves, who return that love with up to three hours of music at each show," said Ryder, the natural leader of the Textbook Committee, who has traveled to seven states to see GBV live since 2021. "Something unspoken happens when the fans come together, as was in strong evidence at GBV40 last summer. We want to bring that camaraderie to Boston, even if on a much smaller scale."

"The ultimate hope is to establish an annual tradition here in Boston that can be replicated and evolved by fans in other cities," added Cortez, a longtime fan with playful anecdotes of spending time with the band offstage as far back as the 1990s.

GBV bandleader Robert Pollard - GBV's principal songwriter and vocalist over four decades - regularly acknowledges his fans from the stage, clearly absorbing the crowd's adoration and reflecting it back through his energetic performances and trademark high leg kicks. Pollard and his bandmates - lead guitarist Doug Gillard, rhythm guitarist Bobby Bare Jr., bassist Mark Shue, and drummer Kevin March - share another common thread with the GBV fanbase: A love of Miller Lite, which the band liberally consumes from the stage at nearly every show.

There will be plenty of Miller Lite and other adult (and non-alcoholic) beverage options at the three-hour event, which begins at 7:30pm that Saturday evening. Additional bands are in discussions to join the bill at press time, and the Textbook Committee is also planning an art and photography display to add visual flair to the proceedings. That includes professional imagery of GBV in action taken by Bugbee, who moonlights as a live music photographer.

The event is 21+ and open to all.

South Bay Music Association Presents ‘Frankenstein: Alive in Concert’ in Collaboration with Grand Vision Foundation

The Lowell Chamber Orchestra Inaugurates Fifth Season with a Concert that Redefines the Symphony

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra opens its fifth season Saturday, September 16, 2023, with music that redefines the symphony as genre. The evening will feature music by Brittney Benton, Yoko Nakatani, Vincent Persichetti, and Arnold Schönberg, bringing a historical approach to the ever changing façade of this genre.

Both Benton and Nakatani are very active composers who were commissioned by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra back in 2020 - at the height of the pandemic - to write works for "Lowell Threads," an initiative by the Lowell Chamber Orchestra to enlist composer into writing works around a particular genre. In this case, Nakatani, Benton, and two other composers, were asked to write works in response to the eccentric chamber symphonies of Darius Milhaud. The results was the album "Miniature Symphonies." On Saturday, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra will perform in public these two pieces since the recording's release in 2021.

The concert begins with Nakatani's one-movement "La Giclée" takes its inspiration from the joy of children as they splash through water, and produced a homage to George Gershwin in a short work that requires an unusual seating arrangement. Benton's "The Sentinel" is the musical telling of a fantastic tale in which a stone golem guards the entrance to a town, and the different movements as the creature slumbers, awakens. The evening will end with Arnold Schönberg's Chamber Symphony No. 1, the work that started a trend in which composers had to learn to use much smaller forces than usual because of World War I.

The concert will also feature Adam Gallant, principal trumpet of the Lowell Chamber Orchestra, as a soloist in Persichetti's "The Hollow Men." This piece, while not technically a symphony, encompasses the profoundly deep meaning of the T. S. Eliot poem that inspired it.

As always, the Lowell Chamber Orchestra is presenting this concert for free, but donations are most necessary in order to keep its mission of providing the best of classical music without a socio-economic boundary to the Lowell population.

Lowell Chamber Orchestra announces fifth season, largest yet

LOWELL, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Lowell Chamber Orchestra has officially announced its fifth season, which will be comprised of seven concerts starting in September of this year, and running all the way until June of next year.

This season will be the most ambitious yet in LCO's history in many ways - not only there will be more concerts than ever in one season, but also will feature more living composers, more soloists, will perform in new venues, will encompass some of the most challenging chamber orchestra repertoire, and will collaborate with not one, but two other musical groups.

Three women composers will be the center of the living composers' feature. All of them commissioned by the LCO for different projects - Brittney Benton and Yoko Nakatani, who were previously commissioned for LCO's "Lowell Threads" initiative, and currently Betsy Schramm, whose piece will be premiered in December. The other two living composers are the winners of the LCO's annual international call-for-scores: this year, two composers tied and agreed to share the prize - Cory Brodack and Martin Schreiner. Both of them were selected after an anonymous process of selection from over 180 scores.

Three soloists will be featured with the ensemble this season, two of them members of the orchestra itself. Principal chair trumpet player Adam Gallant will perform Persichetti's "The Hollow Men," and concertmaster Katharina Radlberger will perform Mozart's Concerto No. 3 in G major. The third soloist is the winner of LCO's International Concerto Competition, Taiwanese marimbist Nikki Huang, based currently in Canada. She will be featured in Séjourné's Concerto for marimba.

Each concert of the season is centered around an iconic work of the classical tradition, chosen for its historical importance. In September, audiences will hear Schönberg's First Chamber Symphony, which changed how the symphony was defined as a genre; In December, Charles Ives' Third Symphony, a Pulitzer Prize winning score, depicting a very traditional American gathering in the inimitable style of Ives; In February, Bartók's mesmerizing "Music for String Instruments, Percussion and Celesta," made famous in Kubrik's film "The Shining." Finally, May culminates the season with the monumental Requiem by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, through a first time collaboration with Boston Cecilia, and its music director, Michael Barret, who will conduct one of its two performances.

"This is a celebratory year for us." says LCO's Music Director Orlando Cela. "We managed to remain active and relatively unscathed during the pandemic, and now in our fifth year, we are looking to share much more with our audiences."

The concert will share the story of Black Georgetown Foundation Inc, the DC nonprofit that supports the Mt. Zion and Female Union Band Cemetery, an African American cemetery saved from condo construction oblivion.

"This truly is a concert series I've been working towards since I was four years old," says Kory Caudill. "I used to watch Yanni - Live at the Acropolis every day and hope that I'd be able to create music like that someday. And now it's a reality. But on an even deeper level, I hope that this concert series allows me to build a platform to make the world my kids live in a better place. And I believe the message and the music these concerts deliver can do just that."

‘GOSPEL SOUL OF ELVIS’ wows crowds in Mineola Texas

MINEOLA, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Elvis Presley is a state of mind. Mark Rios would be the first person to tell you this. Rios is a lifelong fan of The King. But it wasn't until relatively recently that this North Texas actor and director was able to converge his acting and directing careers and dedicate them to exploring his long-standing dream of exploring Elvis Presley's spiritual side.

This dream came together in his new traveling play, "The Gospel Soul of Elvis."

After debuting in Dallas, Rios and crew performed the play at the oldest continuously operating theatre in Texas - the historic Lake Country Playhouse, 114 N. Johnson St in Mineola.

The cast included Rios, Mary Lee Gonzalez, Malik Johnson, Randy Burk, Dasiana Preston, Olivia Simms, Ben Tinsley, and J. Douglas Barker.

The show ran in Mineola for three days April 28-30 to much acclaim.

Neita Fran Ward, ART CONNECTION OF EAST TEXAS, said she really appreciated what the cast did with the performance.

"Every Elvis fan has heard the gospel songs Elvis loved and performed,' she said. "Mark Rios and his backup music group thoughtfully transported the audience back into the music and stories of The King of Rock and Roll with their performance in a relaxed and casual setting. Great voices and entertaining stories."

A friend and colleague of Rios, Victor Rjesnjansky ("Slick Vic" from the hit A&E TV series "Storage Wars Texas") was also impressed.

"Not being a huge fan of Elvis, this was a look into his life from a different venue - hanging out in his penthouse after the show with all his friends," Rjesnjansky said.

Rjesnjansky said it was educational to find out these things about Elvis. "I found myself riveted with interest during the whole show after speaking with creator Mark Rios," he said. "Mark informed me that every show is a little different with little tweaks here and there."

"Definitely worth the trip to see the show. I give it five stars," Rjesnjansky said.

Indeed, Rios has carried the idea for the show around for some time. But it was only in recent months that he transformed his idea into "full-on musical reality."

A lot of Mark's colleagues know him as a great local actor whose mobster show "A Family Thing," is really starting to catch fire on several venues.

But up until recently, not many heard Rios say a word about an Elvis show.

Ben Tinsley, Rios' assistant director and the actor who plays Col. Parker in the show, was initially quite surprised. "Mark called me one day, talking about a stage show with him playing Elvis, and I was like, 'Do WHAT?'" Tinsley said.

Tinsley, like Rjesnjansky, had never before experienced an Elvis-related show. But Tinsley knew a winner when he saw it. He said it was an honor to be asked to join the cast as Col. Parker.

"When I first saw Mark do Elvis during the show, I thought to myself, 'Whoa. He's NOT doing some silly Elvis charactature or impersonation. He's really digging deep.' I was astounded."
