Beyond Benign Launches Initiative to Support Green Chemistry Educators at Minority-Serving Higher Education Institutions

WILMINGTON, Mass. /ScoopCloud/ -- Beyond Benign announced a new Minority Serving Institution (MSI) Initiative, designed to provide green chemistry educational support for faculty and students at Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). Being built and executed in collaboration with MSIs, the initiative is intended to ensure the next generation of world-class chemists and scientific leaders are reflective of the diversity of the global community and prepared to address sustainability through chemistry.

"It is critical that MSI leadership and expertise is included in the growing green chemistry education community. The inclusion and involvement of institutions that serve students from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities into our Green Chemistry Commitment program is central in ensuring the talent pool of sustainable scientists is diverse and equipped with a diversity of perspectives and approaches that will solve global and local challenges," says Dr. Amy Cannon, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Beyond Benign.

The key objectives of this initiative include: partnering with MSI chemistry and science departments, through funding opportunities, professional development and leadership opportunities, to evolve chemistry teaching and practice at their institutions to include green chemistry and sustainable science; building inclusive, diverse community spaces for MSI and BIPOC faculty to collaborate, learn, and share about green chemistry; and engaging and supporting green chemistry student leaders.

The MSI initiative is a critical component of the Beyond Benign Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) 25x25 program, which seeks to ensure that 25 percent of graduating chemists in the U.S. have a background in green chemistry by 2025. The Commitment program offers higher education institutions a flexible model to expand green chemistry education through their science departments. Through signing the GCC, higher education institutions become part of a broad network advocating for green chemistry education, and gain access to professional development opportunities, funding opportunities, mentorship, peer-to-peer support, and much more.

Through this initiative, Beyond Benign will conduct outreach and discussions with faculty members across a variety of MSIs to better understand the unique needs and challenges they face in incorporating green chemistry into their classrooms, labs, and departments. By bringing their leadership and expertise to the table, MSI faculty will help shape adaptable models to scale green chemistry educational programming for higher education students across the nation. Beyond Benign intends to support MSI faculty in their green chemistry work with resources, peer networks, and funding and professional development opportunities.

The Pap Corps Celebrates 70 Years of Funding Research for All Types of Cancer

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a beautiful luncheon event at the Polo Club in Boca Raton on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. During the past seven decades, the nonprofit has grown from a small group of women supporting the pioneering work of Dr. George Papanicolaou to a dynamic organization with over 20,000 members, who fund research for all types of cancer at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The event, hosted by Michael Williams of WPTV, will pay tribute to the organization's impressive history and will honor two special guests, major donor Gerald Yass and Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

For more information visit https://www.thepapcorps.org/.

"The Pap Corps has made an incredible impact on the lives of countless people during these seven decades," said Sally Berenzweig, CEO. "Without funding for cancer research, we wouldn't have the groundbreaking, life-saving treatments that have allowed so many to make the journey from patient to survivor. As a community, we owe a tremendous gratitude to all The Pap Corps members who devoted their time and money to supporting the mission of a world without cancer."

During the event, The Pap Corps will showcase many of these dedicated members in video collage and will honor the past presidents who shaped and guided the organization's tremendous growth during the past 30 years.

"Thanks to our past presidents, incredible directors, and dedicated members, we have many triumphs to celebrate," said Chair Susan Dinter. "And so many of the cherished memories we've created transcend the big check moments and go directly to the heart of our organization. The Pap Corps is special not only because of what we do, but who we are. The enduring friendships within the Corps have created a bond that makes our organization the force it is today. And that is something we are all very proud of!"

The Pap Corps is thankful for the many sponsors who are supporting this event including The Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation; Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Health System; the Wrobel Family Foundation, L'Oréal Paris; Susan& Ed Dinter, Linda & Joel Moses, Judith Harold; the Wechsler Foundation; Sharon Goodhart Travel Agency; Alan Joyce of Raymond James; Heidi S. The Pap Corps derives its name from Dr. George Papanicolaou, a pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection, who introduced the world to the revolutionary 'Pap' test. BOSS™ Racks Up $130,000 in a Day and Places Second in Long Beach Gives

LONG BEACH, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The 4th Annual Long Beach Gives campaign, an online giving day sponsored by the City's leading nonprofit funders and nonprofit support organizations, invites donors from throughout the city and beyond to give to the local nonprofit of their choosing. This year, the effort raised $1,965,539 to support 232 participating nonprofits. BOSS™ (Business Of Student Success) raised $130,000 from more than 300 donors, making it the second most contributed to charity in this year's campaign.

That distinction was earned, in part, through BOSS's partnerships. "We could not have competed without the matching donations by Bella Canvas / Alo Yoga and Greg Perlman of GHC Housing Partners, as well as the ongoing support from the Los Angeles Rams through VP Molly Higgins," Everett Glenn, sports industry pioneer turned BOSS leader, said.

"I am so thrilled to hear that our contribution has made such a big difference! So thrilled," said Lindsey Potter, People Experience Manager/DEI at Alo, Alo Moves, and BELLA+.

BOSS, a Long Beach-based nonprofit, focuses on helping local boys - and particularly boys of color - succeed in school, their community, and eventually, in their careers. The group uses sport and a focus on specific career pathways, including STEAM, to support the 200 boys they serve. Through year-round and multi-year programming, BOSS is successfully addressing the inequities in education laid bare by COVID.

The served boys have five years of across-the-board outperformance on all metrics tracked by the Department of Education, and a 20/20 college acceptance rate among graduating seniors. Those graduates now attend Stanford, UCLA, Tennessee State, Lincoln University, San Diego State, Whittier College, CSULB, and UC Merced.

Of the 232 nonprofit organizations that participated in Long Beach Gives, BOSS ranked second only behind The Assistance League, an institution with 800 members that's been operating in the area for nearly a century.

Additionally, BOSS earned prizes in the following categories:

* Most unique donors to a nonprofit

* Most peer fundraisers for a nonprofit

* Early giving: most unique donors to a peer fundraiser

* Early giving: most unique donors to a nonprofit

* Early giving: most dollars raised by a nonprofit

Beyond the role they played in BOSS's Long Beach Gives success, the BOSS team identified two partners that will support their career pathway programming moving forward.

"Bella Canvas / Alo Yoga is our newest sponsor and we're working with them to develop career exposure and networking opportunities for our boys around the apparel industry," Glenn explains.

He also adds, "The Rams have been supporters from Day 1 and continue to open doors and create unique, real-world experiences and opportunities for advocacy for our boys." Rams VP Molly Higgins said, "The boys are lucky to have you! We are lucky to have you fighting for our kids! Thanks for the important work you are doing."

While the Long Beach Gives campaign has ended, individuals and organizations can still donate to BOSS at https://bossprograms.org/donate/

About BOSS:

BOSS™ (Business Of Student Success) helps BIPOC youth, especially boys of color and economically disadvantaged boys, develop the character, discipline, habits, and skills they need to succeed in school, in the community, and professionally. The organization places an emphasis on STEAM, critical thinking, writing, and related fields. At the same time, the nonprofit leverages the power of sport to inspire boys to pursue greatness beyond sport.

31 dogs saved from a dog-meat breeding farm in China have arrived in the United States following year long CDC dog ban

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- China Rescue Dogs, a 501(c)(3) organization, committed to rescuing and saving dogs from the slaughterhouses, meat trade, abuse, and neglect in China, has rescued into the U.S. the first large shipments of dogs from China following the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) dog ban.

"This truly was a global effort with teams from China, Canada and the United States all coming together to save these dogs from slaughter," acknowledged Jill Stewart, President and Founder of China Rescue Dogs.

The dogs were all saved in April 2022 from a dog meat breeding farm in China. Their rescue was featured by People: https://people.com/pets/china-rescue-dogs-saving-golden-retrievers-corgis/

"To know these dogs now have a second chance at life and will experience love for the first time, makes all the time spent on a project like this worthwhile," said Brandy Cherven, Vice President of China Rescue Dogs. "They were being sent to the slaughterhouse when we stepped in and saved them."

The dogs have spent the last three weeks stationed in Vancouver, Canada waiting for the final leg of their journey." Stewart adds, "We could not have accomplished this mission without the help of David MacNeil, CEO of WeatherTech, Nordstrom's, Dog is My CoPilot, and all our supporters. Dog is My CoPilot is a nonprofit that saves dogs from high kill shelters. The flight from Canada into the U.S. was their first international transport."

There are 10 other rescue organizations that have helped find these pups their forever homes. Of the 31 survivors now in the U.S., 16 are Golden Retrievers and 15 are Frenchie's and Pugs. Other dogs from the April 2022 rescue have already been adopted in Canada.

On July 14, 2021, the CDC suspended dogs imported from 113 countries, including China, due to the potential risk of spreading the canine rabies virus variant (CRVV.) Since that time, China Rescue Dogs has been saving dogs into Canada. This flight marks the first time since the CDC Dog Ban that a large shipment of dogs were granted permission to come into the U.S.

"We have worked closely with the CDC and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to guarantee that all the dogs are healthy, properly vaccinated and tested against canine rabies," said Stewart. "We are honored that our best practices of doing what is best for the dogs was rewarded with their entry into the U.S."

Sustainable Africa Future Network’s PRE-COP27 Virtual Climate Change Collection Kicks Off with Poignant Remarks by U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield

WASHINGTON, D.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield urged activists to come together to achieve climate justice during her opening message to nearly 500 people logged on from around the world for today's kick-off of the PRE-COP27 Virtual Climate Change Collection hosted by the HBCU Green Fund's Sustainable Africa Future Network. "[the climate crisis] requires bold and sustained, collective action and there is no better forum for collective action than the United Nations," she said.

Convened during Climate Week in advance of the 2022 U.N. Climate Conference (COP27) in Egypt, the free, five-day event presents a collection of compelling stories that highlight local cultures, climate impacts, and innovative grassroots projects underway to fight the climate crisis in communities in Africa and the Diaspora. To register for the Pre-COP27 Virtual Summit visit https://sustainableafricafuture.org.

"Climate justice is key to racial justice," said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield. "Communities of color bear a particularly heavy burden from climate change and pollution. The hard work of climate justice starts at the grass roots."

According to organizers, the goal of the event is to build and strengthen climate networks throughout the African diaspora, elevate the positive initiatives taking place on micro budgets, and mobilize support for the participation of African climate NGO's at COP27. Speakers in Africa include Shamiela Reid, Just Transition Enterprise, South Africa; Cheikhou Thiome, Sustainable Africa Futures Senegal; Destin Simpijja, Sustainable Africa Futures Uganda. Dr. Mildred McClain, Harambee House/Citizens for Environmental Justice; Raina Turner-Greenlea, Black Sustainability; and Felicia Davis, HBCU Green Fund, are among the U.S. participants.

"As the devastating effects of global warming increase, Black communities in the U.S., throughout Africa and the diaspora, stand to suffer some of the largest consequences if action is not immediate," said Illai Kenney, national director of HBCU Green Fund.

Ivan Duque, Former President of the Republic of Colombia, announces historic Concordia Amazon Initiative at the 2022 Concordia Annual Summit

NEW YORK, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- Ivan Duque Marquez, Former President of Colombia, today announced the Concordia Amazon Initiative on the Metropolitan Stage of the 2022 Concordia Annual Summit. The leading global affairs platform commenced its 12th annual convening on Monday, September 19 and it is being held through Wednesday, September 21, alongside the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Amazon, which spans eight rapidly-developing countries and French Guiana, contains 1.4 billion acres of dense forests-half of the planet's remaining tropical forests. Additionally, there are 2.6 million square miles in the Amazon basin, which equates to around 40% of South America. The objective of the Concordia Amazon Initiative is to raise awareness around the intricate link between the health of the Amazon and the health of the planet, and the kinds of commitments the private sector can make to preserve the rainforest.

"The Concordia Amazon Initiative constitutes a milestone in the process of public-private engagement to protect, defend and promote the most important natural lung of our planet," commented Former President Duque.

He went on to say: "Through aggregated value chains with indigenous communities, conservation projects, the promotion of nature-based solutions, and green finance, we expect to build traceable and trustworthy interventions that will have a meaningful effect in a territory that is pivotal in any climate action policy framework."

The Initiative's first iteration will consist of a high-level strategic convening in the Amazon, bringing together leaders of the private and public sectors to provide education, training, and insight, and ultimately foster collaborative solutions.

Concordia's Co-Founder & CEO, Matthew Swift, said: "The Former President has placed environmental sustainability at the forefront of Colombia's agenda during his tenure, establishing an ambitious strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and, specifically, mobilizing climate finance at scale to accelerate the country's transition to a green future. Now he is ensuring it is also at the forefront of our collective global agenda with his announcement today. We are honored to work with President Duque on this important and most relevant topic and convening."

Tens of Thousands of Researchers Celebrated During 13th National Postdoc Appreciation Week

ROCKVILLE, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) today kicked off the 13th annual National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW), taking place today through Friday. NPAW is the nation's largest celebration of postdoctoral scholars who serve at more than 300 institutions, acknowledging the significant contributions "postdocs" make to research, innovation and scientific discovery. This year's NPAW theme, "Finding Your Balance," recognizes the challenges postdocs face in balancing the rigors of their research positions with maintaining their health and wellness.

Postdocs are individuals holding doctoral degrees engaged in a temporary period of mentored research or scholarly training to gain needed skills to excel in their careers. These scholars conduct a large share of critical, cutting-edge research across all disciplines at universities, research institutions and industry members across the United States.

"Postdocs require exemplary discipline, focus, and balance to succeed in their challenging positions," said Tom Kimbis, J.D., executive director and chief executive officer of the NPA. "They are the backbone of science and research leadership in our country and deserve recognition throughout the year. Carving out a week to celebrate their remarkable work ethic and achievements is the least we can do."

The contribution of the roughly 70,000 U.S. postdocs, whose numbers are concentrated in the STEM fields and are instrumental to much of the early-stage research that occurs throughout the country, is often overlooked, as the academic postdoc is neither a student nor a faculty member. Yet, postdocs represent the highest-educated individuals in our society and drive innovation daily.

"Many don't realize that thousands of postdocs work in the social sciences - from economics to psychology - and go onto leadership positions in government, industry, and non-profit organizations," commented Stephanie Eberle, M.Ed., executive director of BioSci Careers at Stanford University. "Like those in the physical sciences, their roles are critical to societal growth and innovation."

Since its founding by the NPA in 2009, NPAW has grown into a truly national event, with universities, medical centers, industry members, and others hosting events this week to acknowledge the contributions of postdocs. Popular events during NPAW include professional and career development workshops, networking activities, and social events celebrating the immense contribution of postdocs to our nation's thought leadership. This year, roughly 40 free national events are open to all postdocs, in addition to local events happening on campuses across the nation.

NPAW 2022 is anchored by a kickoff event with opening remarks by Sharon Milgram, Ph.D., director of the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and a panel discussion, featuring Robert Hable, Ph.D., innovation and product commercialization coordinator at BASF; Inge Hansen, Psy.D., clinical psychologist and director of well-being at Stanford University; and Yen Teng Tai, Ph.D., postdoctoral researcher at Penn State University College of Medicine. The discussion will focus on challenges early career researchers face, lessons learned from their own struggles, and a framework for postdocs to build better balance in their professional lives as they navigate their career progression.

A calendar of 2022 NPAW events can be found at https://www.nationalpostdoc.org/page/2022NPAW

This year, NPAW is made possible by NPA Distinguished Partner, Gallagher Insurance, and NPA Gold Partner, Proteintech.

The NPA is a national charitable and educational non-profit association headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, that seeks to improve the postdoctoral experience by supporting a culture of inclusive connection. At the individual, organizational, and national levels, the NPA facilitates enhanced professional growth, raises awareness, and collaborates with stakeholders in the postdoctoral community. Membership in the NPA is open to all organizations and individuals interested in advancing the interests of postdocs in the United States.

Affiliate membership in the NPA for most postdocs is free and available at https://www.nationalpostdoc.org/.

Death Row Resident Reveals Poignant Childhood Trauma – Compassion Prison Project Interviews author Jarvis Jay Masters

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Compassion Prison Project Founder and Compassion in Action podcast host, Fritzi Horstman, has released a riveting, in-depth interview with San Quentin death row resident and author, Jarvis Jay Masters. Masters, author of "That Bird Has My Wings: The Autobiography of an Innocent Man on Death Row" and "Finding Freedom: Writings From Death Row," is also a well-known Buddhist practitioner and Covid survivor. Oprah Winfrey has recently selected "That Bird Has My Wings" as her latest pick for Oprah's Book Club.

In this compelling conversation, Horstman and Masters discuss, amongst many absorbing topics, evidence of strikingly similar childhood trauma endured by nearly all death row residents. They reflect on the day Masters stepped in to prevent a gay prison resident from being beaten and discuss his youth, where Masters recalls frequent visits to a local college campus, wondering why he couldn't experience life as a real student.

At once heartbreaking, wise and hopeful, Masters never shies away from the diligent questions posed by Horstman. Masters has steadfastly maintained his innocence for the crime in which he was sentenced to death and is currently awaiting a decision on his case by the federal courts. As part of CPP's innovative trauma-informed outreach, Horstman recently had the unique opportunity to work with several other men living on death row as well.

"It was a great privilege to speak with Jarvis Jay Masters. Not only did he overcome a childhood filled with trauma, neglect and violence, he took every possibility to transform himself, revealing the extraordinary person that he truly is today," said Fritzi Horstman - Founder Compassion Prison Project.

"With over 2,400 people living on death row, there are over 2,400 extraordinary human beings we can rehabilitate and support to find ways to make amends to their victims and give back to society. Gandhi said: 'An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.' If we take another look and realize there are better ways to deal with crime and State-sanctioned murder, we have a chance to see clearly again."

During the Black Hollywood Education Resource Center's Annual film festival, we will bring together a distinguished group of mental health experts, affiliates, peers, providers, government officials, media, and key stakeholders to talk about what it means to recover mentally from the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to see the increasing number of people experiencing anxiety, depression, psychosis, loneliness, suicide, mass shootings and other mental health concerns these past two years, in addition to the largest number of opioid deaths in our history.

The historical landscape and experience of mental health among the African American Community has and remains to be characterized by current and unresolved trauma and violence. To address the impact of mental and brain health in diverse and marginalized communities across the globe, the Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center will also present its first Health Matters Film Block, featuring films focused on mental health. "This year's films will help us reimage therapeutic treatments and models of mental health care and to determine ways that we can adequately address the complex challenges of mental illness in marginalized communities, which accounts for approximately one-third of mental illness globally", stated Dr. Shirley Evers-Manly, Dean and Professor, Alcorn State University, who will moderate the session.

During the festival and beyond, participants will discuss alternative ways to heal from trauma and explore the intersecting equity issues that exist. These events unequally affect many African Americans, communities of color and marginalized communities the most, placing them more at risk of a mental health crisis.

These circumstances call for radical change in the paradigm and practices of mental health care, including improving standards of clinician training, and revisioning current models of mental health care delivery. Upon completion of this conference, participants will enhance their knowledge of evidence-based practices to improve the behavioral and clinical skills of nurses, social workers, and other health care professionals who care for persons and families of all ages and cultural / socioeconomic status living with mental illness across the globe through the lens of film and the sound of music.

Turning Unwanted Vehicles into Lifesaving Opportunities: How Vehicle Donations Help the Sacramento SPCA Save Animals’ Lives

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- With gas prices still hovering above $5.30 per gallon and many people leaving their "gas guzzlers" in the driveway, the Sacramento SPCA is reminding the community that it's the perfect time to donate their unwanted vehicle to benefit the animals.

Since 2017, the Sacramento SPCA has partnered with CARS, Inc. to accept vehicle donations at no cost to donors, regardless of whether the vehicle is running or not. Proceeds from sales of the used cars, trucks, boats, RVs, and motorcycles donated help the Sacramento SPCA provide care to more than 40,000 animals that enter their doors each year.

"Unfortunately, we've seen vehicle donations decline by 33% in 2022," said Kenn Altine, Sacramento SPCA CEO. "This has occurred as new vehicle sales also decreased in 2022, due to rising vehicle prices and less inventory."

The average vehicle donation to the Sacramento SPCA is approximately $1,500 - which can provide lifesaving surgeries for three animals or cover the cost of microchips and vaccines for fifteen animals.

Donating a vehicle to the Sacramento SPCA is as easy as filling out the online vehicle donation form or picking up a phone and speaking to a live donor support representative - and every donation helps save animals' lives. The partners at CARS, Inc. will tow the vehicle at no cost to the owner (regardless of whether it's running or not), and donors will receive a donation receipt.

As the only full-service 100% non-profit animal welfare organization in the Sacramento region, the Sacramento SPCA relies on donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations to support their lifesaving work. They are local, independent, and do not receive funding from state or local government agencies.

For more information about how to donate your vehicle to the Sacramento SPCA, visit https://www.sspca.org/vehicle or call 844-700-GIVE today.

AI-Based Transit Signal Prioritization Helps Buses in Silicon Valley Get Residents Living in Zero-Vehicle Households to Destinations Faster

SANTA CLARA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County C/CAG) and the Intelligent Transit Signal Prioritization (iTSP) project partners have successfully completed a pilot project that demonstrated a positive impact on improved transit performance in East Palo Alto, Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) announced today.

* Without iTSP, buses stop at traffic signals 70% of the time.

* With iTSP deployed at key traffic intersections, buses spent less time idling and got riders to their destinations faster and more efficiently.

* Fact Sheet about the iTSP project - https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1-nIZmFkuuJ-Ow0W5MInB2zu4_eGYtu8l

With funding from C/CAG, Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) formed a coalition of public and private stakeholders including San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), the City of East Palo Alto and technology company LYT, to deliver intelligent transit priority along congested arteries in transit-dependent communities. The City of East Palo Alto is a place where such improvements are most needed and can potentially improve the quality of life for residents.

SSV successfully led the pilot project, creating a blueprint for future investments in regional bus systems. The SSV/ LYT team will present the project findings in a Special Presentation to the City of East Palo Alto City Council at the September 20th, 2022, City Council meeting.

The efficiency of local transit has a direct impact on communities such as East Palo Alto which is designated as an Equity Priority Community by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). This designation is in part due to the number of Zero-Vehicle Households, meaning households that do not own a personal vehicle making it a challenge to get to work, school, etc. In East Palo Atlo, 9% of households do not have a vehicle compared to 6% countywide in San Mateo.

For the pilot project, the coalition deployed LYT's Artificial Intelligence-powered Transit Signal Priority (TSP) technology, called LYT.transit, on a corridor consisting of four signalized intersections in East Palo Alto. This corridor is a subsection of SamTrans route 281 and includes the following intersections: University Ave. at Bay Rd., Runnymede St., Bell St., and Donohoe St.

The iTSP deployment on University Ave. yielded a significant positive impact on several key performance indicators:

* iTSP reduced northbound intersection delays by 45% and southbound intersection delays by 19%.

* These reductions translate to 18% and 7% reductions in travel time for northbound and southbound respectively.

Bringing cities, agencies and tech together around some of the big challenges facing under-represented communities is itself a powerful tool.

"SSV is recognized for creating unique partnerships and we are pleased to identify a solution for a systemic transit issue in East Palo Alto with LYT's innovative technology and introduce SamTrans to an AI-powered TSP solution that scales for wider deployment," said SSV Board Chair Andrew (Drew) Clark.

LYT is a cloud-based software platform that uses state-of-the-art connected vehicle and machine learning technologies to prioritize the flow of vehicles in a city and across a corridor. By optimizing public transport, emergency and other vehicles it enables shorter travel times, less congestion, improved air quality and more reliable mass transit.

Seeking Mentors for Children Experiencing Parental Incarceration

AUSTIN, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Seedling Foundation, a non-profit organization serving children who have an incarcerated parent, is seeking business partners and individual volunteers to mentor children in Central Texas school districts during the 2022-23 school year. The organization served 472 children last school year and expects to significantly increase the number of children served in local school districts.

Based on research-driven, best practices for mentoring, Seedling trains and supports mentors (each mentor assisted by a professional Seedling Mentor Director) for their work with children who have an incarcerated parent. Mentors and mentees meet weekly during lunch at one of Seedling's 100 public school partners. Seedling works intently to pair volunteers' skills and interests with a child who has similar interests. The average duration of a mentor/mentee match is 24 months, which positively contributes to the students' personal development, resilience, school engagement, attendance, and disciplinary outcomes.

"Mentoring a child in a local public school is one of the most rewarding and impactful volunteer experiences in Central Texas. The reward for both the mentee and volunteer is life changing," said Dan Leal, Seedling Executive Director.

Seedling's mission is to mitigate the impact of parental incarceration on children in Central Texas through school-based mentoring. Seedling matches children with mentors in Austin ISD, Austin Achieve Public Schools, Del Valle ISD, Hays Consolidated ISD, KIPP Public Schools, and Pflugerville ISD. Since 2005, Seedling has served more than 2700 children who have a parent in prison or jail.

There are an estimated 8,000 kids who have a parent in jail or prison in Travis, Hays, Bastrop, and Williamson Counties. No system, including criminal justice and schools, asks the question of whether a child is in need due to parental incarceration. Seedling began mentoring children who have an incarcerated parent at the request of Austin ISD principals to fill a need that often remains hidden due to stigma.

Individuals may visit https://seedlingmentors.org to complete the New Mentor Application or call Seedling at (512) 323-6371 to inquire about an information session for a group. Caregivers who are seeking school-based mentoring for their child in school districts partnering with Seedling should contact the school's counseling department.

About Seedling:

Seedling has provided school-based mentoring for over 2700 Central Texas children impacted by parental incarceration since 2005. Seedling is seeking mentors to serve children during the 2022-23 school year. Seedling is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Tax ID #74-2841791. Donations are tax deductible.

Through personal development courses and career-focused training, this six-month program aims to provide "leaders" connections to a network of business partners and higher-paying job opportunities.

Joseph Johnson, a recently retired business leader in the Des Moines community for over 25 years, along with his wife Karin, have opened the doors to Change Course. "Earlier in life, I was incarcerated for poor choices I made and while incarcerated, I got to know many men who struggled to enter the workforce-not from lack of desire, but the lack of opportunity, quality education, and support from healthy community," Joseph said. "I feel compelled by my relationship with Christ to step up and pay forward what was done for me to help develop a loving community around the people we plan to serve."

Petco Love Invests $12,500 in the Sacramento SPCA to Expand Lifesaving Support for Pets Affected by Disaster

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Sacramento SPCA announced today that they received a $12,500 grant investment from national nonprofit Petco Love, to expand their lifesaving support for animals affected by disaster in Northern California. A special check celebration was held at the Petco retail store located at 855 E. Bidwell Street in Folsom, Calif., on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at 2 p.m.

The Sacramento SPCA has positioned itself as a lifesaving resource for animals in need as devastating wildfires have continued to affect regions all over Northern California.

"We realized several fire seasons ago that one of the best services we can provide here in Sacramento is to help clear out the available animals in shelters closest to impacted regions," said Kenn Altine, Sacramento SPCA CEO. In 2021, more than 460 animals were transferred from other shelters to the Sacramento SPCA, including areas affected by the Dixie, Caldor, and Monument Fires.

"We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with the Petco Folsom store and Petco Love to support our lifesaving work," said Altine. "With this $12,500 grant investment, we can provide crates and other emergency supplies to shelters housing displaced animals while people try to put their worlds back together."

Petco Love is a national nonprofit leading change for pets by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. And Petco Love helps find loving homes for pets in partnership with Petco and more than 4,000 organizations - like ours - across North America, with 6.5 million pets adopted and counting.

"Our investment in the Sacramento SPCA is part of more than $15M in investments recently announced by Petco Love to power local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized," said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. "Our local investments are only part of our strategy to empower animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us. We recently celebrated the one-year launch anniversary of Petco Love Lost, a national lost and found database that uses pet facial recognition technology to simplify the search for lost pets."

As the only full-service 100% non-profit animal shelter in the Sacramento region, the Sacramento SPCA relies on donations from individuals, businesses, and foundations to support their lifesaving work. They are local, independent, and do not receive funding from state or local government agencies.

‘ALICE’ Families Focus of New Docudrama by Education Based Housing, Premieres July 21

HOUSTON, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- A $500 or $1,000 unplanned expense is enough to send an ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) family spiraling according to a report by Bankrate. Education Based Housing, a Houston nonprofit that serves ALICE families and communities knows this to be true. The organization partnered with Cypress creative agency, PrettyWork Creative to produce a docudrama to show situations real families face and expand the national conversation on ALICE families.

"The Spiral" will premiere Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the India House, 8888 West Bellfort St., Houston, TX 77031.

Education Based Housing Chief Executive Officer, Jarvis Taylor, believes the short film will help "unpack how stereotypes affect a communities' ability to access resources and services." According to Taylor, individualist pursuits and chasing the American dream has led to deeper levels of poverty for many thus continuing the cycle of generational poverty. The solution, according to Taylor, is building successful, thriving communities. "It's going to take all of us to overcome systemic poverty," said Taylor.

The docudrama is based on a combination of news headlines and personal stories and leaves viewers asking, "what would you do?" Premiere attendees will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ask questions of Taylor and other guest panelists.

Move For Hunger and SML Relocation Renew Partnership to Fight Food Waste and Hunger Across the United States

NEPTUNE, N.J. /ScoopCloud/ -- Simple Moving Labor Relocation (SML), a nationwide moving service company, and Move For Hunger, a national hunger relief non-profit organization, have renewed their partnership for the 5th time to continue their fight against hunger and food waste throughout the United States.

Move For Hunger was founded in 2009 by Adam Lowy, and has provided more than 27 million pounds of food, equaling over 23 million meals, to food pantries and banks across the United States. Since the pandemic started, Move For Hunger has had to meet the growing need of food insecurity in the United States and Canada, where 42 million Americans and 1 in 8 Canadians struggle with hunger.

SML Relocation's partnership with Move for Hunger is unique in that they contribute quarterly based on the direct consumer fundraising they do each quarter. With their fundraising campaign, they invite customers to donate at the time of booking, and then, as a company, match the customer donations. SML Relocation become a partner with Move For Hunger in 2018 and has since provided more than 78,700 meals through monetary contributions to food insecure communities across the nation.

"SML is proud to support this organization in its mission to fight hunger and reduce food waste," says Josh Barnes, vice president of SML Relocation. "Every day across the country millions of individuals are food insecure; our partnership with Move For Hunger provides the most logical way for SML to positively affect real and meaningful change in people's lives."

Move For Hunger has a network of more than 1,100 moving companies, 3,000 multifamily apartment communities, and many of the world's leading relocation management companies, that collect unopened, non-perishable food and deliver it to local food banks.

"We are beyond thankful for 5 years of partnership with SML and the ability to work with each partner in a way that makes the biggest impact on food insecure communities," said Adam Lowy, Executive Director and Founder of Move For Hunger.

Taking it Down to Earth: Debunking Myths about Lightning Protection

CUMBERLAND, Maine /ScoopCloud/ -- Old and new myths about lightning protection continue to circulate through the internet and unsafe lightning protection products still manage to find their way into construction job specifications in many parts of the U.S. To help safeguard properties from a leading weather threat, the National Lightning Safety Council (NLSC) is stressing the importance of separating fact from fallacy about lightning protection systems (LPS).

"Despite the wealth of accurate information on lightning, lightning safety and lightning protection, there are still many myths and misunderstandings that persist," said John Jensenius, a lightning safety specialist with the NLSC.

Just in time for Lightning Safety Awareness Week, the NLSC debunks five common myths about lightning protection:

1 - Lightning rods attract lightning

Unfortunately, this is a common misconception about lightning protection. Lightning protection systems and strike termination devices (industry name for lightning rods which are part of the system) work in conjunction with a grounding network to intercept a lightning strike and provide a safe and effective path that dissipates lightning's harmful electricity into the earth.

2 - Tall trees protect a structure against lightning

False. Lightning can side-flash from a tree and hit a nearby structure. Additionally, when lightning strikes and travels underground along tree roots, it can enter a structure by jumping onto nearby telephone, cable and electrical lines, introducing harmful surges. Lightning can also injure a tree from a direct strike, causing limbs to split and fall onto a nearby structure.

3 - Homes and building are already grounded and don't need lightning protection

The electrical ground installed by an electrician is there to protect the internal workings of the electrical system in a building to accommodate everyday electricity usage-it's not designed to handle the mega electricity (100 million + volts of power or 200 kA of electrical energy!) that a lightning strike can pack.

4 - A lightning rod is easy to install

Lightning protection is a complex system (not just a "rod") of UL-listed materials and methods which comply with nationally-recognized safety standards of the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). LPS is not a do-it-yourself project. Only trained experts like LPI-certified lightning protection contractors should install lightning protection systems, since design and installation is rarely within the scope of expertise held by homeowners, general contractors or roofers.

5 - Surge protection and "whole house" arresters protect structures from lightning

False. Surge protection is only one element of a complete lightning protection system. A grounding network for lightning (lightning protection system) must be implemented to provide structural protection. A LPS that meets national safety standards includes strike termination devices, down conductors, bonding, grounding and UL-rated surge protection devices.

"Lightning just wants to get to ground and a safety standard compliant lightning protection system helps it get there without harmful impact to the structure, contents or building systems," said Kimberly Loehr, a lightning protection specialist and member of the NLSC. "The concept is simple, but the safety standards are complex and detail principles including zone of protection, common bonding of grounded systems, potential equalization of ground impedance, lightning risk assessment and much more," explained Loehr.

Past recipients include: Laura Bush, Former First Lady of the U.S.; Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group; Mónica Ramírez, Founder & President of Justice for Migrant Women; Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart; Christiana Figueres, Founder of Global Optimism; António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; Secretary Hillary R. Clinton, Former Security of State for the U.S.; and, Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

Concordia's Leadership Award Committee is chaired by Anita McBride, Concordia Leadership Council Member and Former Assistant to President George W. Bush & Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush, who commented: "The Leadership Award Committee has once again undertaken a rigorous nomination and selection process, and I'm honored to announce the three recipients for 2022. From placing environmental sustainability high on the Latin American agenda to reducing poverty across the U.S. and transforming the role of business in advancing diversity & inclusion, we all have so much to learn from these three distinguished individuals."

For the public sector, Concordia recognizes President Duque for his exceptional leadership and immeasurable contributions through his service over the past four years. Exemplified by his administration's support of Venezuelan refugees, President Duque's compassion and amity have set a new international standard for humanitarian aid and his efforts to depolarize politics in Colombia and move away from partisanship display his commitments to balanced government and collaboration.

President Duque has also placed environmental sustainability at the forefront of Colombia's agenda, establishing an ambitious strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and, specifically, mobilizing climate finance at scale to accelerate the country's transition to a green future. Crucially, in 2021, Duque made a historic commitment to declare 30% of its territory a protected area by 2022, eight years ahead of schedule. President Duque's previous leadership as Senator-including his attention to bills lengthening maternal leave, increasing defibrillator availability, and promoting creative industries-demonstrated his dedication to improving the quality of life for Colombians. Additionally, Concordia acknowledges the immense support President Duque has provided to the organization, from being an early advocate for Concordia's Summits to recruiting influential leaders to the global community.

"I am honored to receive the 2022 Leadership Award on behalf of the public sector. Concordia, for me, embodies the essence of global progress: collaboration, nonpartisanship, partnership, and inclusivity," said President Duque. "Colombia is facing a crossroads. As I reflect on my presidency over the last four years, and as the country enters uncharted waters, one thing is clear: open dialogue and collaboration, both across sectors and neighboring countries, is key to advancing progress. For that reason, I'm so honored to participate in the Concordia Americas Summit, which will fuel much-needed debate and seek out multi-stakeholder solutions."

For the private sector, Concordia is recognizing Ginni Rometty for her outstanding leadership and tremendous impact at OneTen and as CEO of IBM from 2012-2020. At IBM, Rometty made bold changes to reposition the company for the future of technology in Hybrid Cloud and Artificial Intelligence by expanding its assets, optimizing its portfolio, and modeling responsible digital stewardship. Her pioneering initiatives in diversity and inclusion set up the company for long-lasting success in the technology industry. Recognized by the Catalyst Award in 2018, Rometty's efforts to improve women's experiences in the workplace are important components of achieving workforce equality. Additionally, her work at OneTen to empower minority communities and support their place in the technology industry and beyond only further highlights her deep commitment to building and fostering sustainable labor forces and leadership in one of the world's most influential sectors.

"In this digital era, we could have a digital divide where the benefits of technology go to the few and not the many. We can all be part of making progress toward closing the skills gap and working to improve racial equity," said Rometty. "I truly believe that when we do, companies and leaders will see that inclusion creates better products and makes them more competitive. I'm honored to receive the 2022 Leadership Award and to share the work we're doing at OneTen to upskill, hire, and promote one million Black Americans into family-sustaining jobs over the next 10 years. I look forward to the Annual Summit and to continuing the conversation around how we break down systemic barriers and open the door to full participation in our economy."

For the nonprofit sector, Concordia has selected Sister Norma Pimentel for her notable efforts to support migrants seeking refuge in the U.S. along the Texas/Mexico border. In her role as Executive Director of the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, Sister Pimentel oversees the charitable arm of the Diocese of Brownsville, providing oversight of the different ministries and services in the areas of the Rio Grande Valley through emergency assistance, homelessness prevention, disaster relief, clinical counseling, pregnancy care, food programs, and the Humanitarian Respite Center. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Announces Summit to Conserve North America’s Central Grasslands

FORT COLLINS, Colo. /ScoopCloud/ -- More than 200 organizations across eight sectors representing Mexico, Canada, the U.S., and Indigenous Nations, came together for two days in May for a multi-national summit to commit to conserve North America's Central Grasslands. Hosted by the Grasslands Roadmap Planning Committee, the announcement comes from Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, one of the convening summit partners.

More than 50 million acres of grassland have been lost in the last 10 years alone and the tension between conserving and developing grasslands to meet the needs of a growing population has only increased, exacerbated further by the impacts of climate change.

Birds are good indicators of environmental health and since 1970, grassland bird species have seen a 53-percent reduction in their populations - that's more than 720 million birds. This early warning sign reveals that these diminishing grasslands are being so severely impacted by human activities that they no longer support the same robust wildlife populations they once did.

The Central Grasslands span hundreds of millions of acres across the continent's interior and are one of North America's largest and most vital ecosystems. These Grasslands support crucial environmental functions like water supply, soil health and biodiversity, and are essential for agriculture, food security and supporting rural communities and economies. And, as these grasslands disappear, many benefits they provide are lost.

For example, healthy grasslands filter sediment, nutrients, and bacteria that otherwise end up in waterways, threatening fish and drinking water. Grasslands improve air quality and help mitigate the effects of climate change by sequestering carbon and increasing resilience against drought, fire and wind erosion.

So, what can be done to reverse the trends? That was the main driver behind the Central Grasslands Roadmap and recent summit meeting.

"Many are working to conserve our grasslands, but our disparate efforts are not adding up to change the trajectory and ensure resilient grasslands for the future. We have to prioritize what needs to happen, from funding and policy to partnerships and engagement, to science and conservation delivery - all aligned for the future," Tammy VerCauteren, Roadmap convener and executive director at Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, says.

Collectively, they're working to make a movement to save the grasslands and the people and wildlife that depend on them.

"Together we can ensure access, opportunities and dedicated resources that are relevant and honor cultural values and knowledge across our three countries and the traditional landscapes of Indigenous/Tribal Sovereign Nations," VerCauteren says.

Graeme Patterson, director, JV8 Central Grasslands Conservation Initiative explains that The Central Grasslands Roadmap has been a model exercise in bringing diverse sectors together to chart a path for conservation.

"The complex and painstaking process of giving everyone voice in the Roadmap development will pay huge dividends as all stakeholders will see themselves in the process and be ready to act," Patterson says. "Successful conservation is dependent on true collaboration and thoughtful planning. Together, we will succeed."

Singing Dog Vanilla Sponsors a New Guinea Singing Dog From a Wildlife Sanctuary

EUGENE, Ore. /ScoopCloud/ -- Singing Dog Vanilla has partnered with Wizard of Paws Wildlife Education & Conservation Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Vanilla company, known for its silly name, will sponsor a New Guinea Singing Dog named Kora Nakako. They will help support the animal's well-being and educate their fans about the breed.

The company chose the name Singing Dog Vanilla after these dogs and to honor the first Fair Trade Plus+ Farmers in Papua New Guinea. The farmers found the name hilarious. Co-Founders Bill Wiedeman and Marty Parisien felt a silly name was perfect for the brand.

"We're thrilled to work with Wizard of Paws Wildlife Education. The opportunity to follow Kora and learn about these animals is very exciting. We hope our fans will enjoy learning about these dogs from a closer perspective," said Marty Parisien, the company's co-founder.

Singing Dogs are a rare but fascinating species native to the island of Papua New Guinea. One of the many unique qualities of these dogs is that they do not bark; instead, they "sing."

Wizard of Paws Wildlife and Singing Dog Vanilla hope to learn more about this captivating species. Studying Kora will help preserve the New Guinea Singing Dog for years to come.
