After 50 years, H.E. Hodge Company, Cumming athletic and institutional equipment company, kicks off a new season of ownership

CUMMING, Ga. /ScoopCloud/ -- DeJazz Woods has always had a love for sports. He has been around athletic equipment since childhood football, leading him to play at the collegiate level as an outside linebacker for the University of Illinois from 2010 - 2014. Upon graduation, armed with a master's degree, his career would take off in the athletic equipment industry. As a Business Development Manager for three major athletic equipment manufacturers, Woods would cross paths with Jeff Hodge, President of H.E. Hodge Company, and Bud Hodge, the company's founder, who are both huge college football fans. They began mentoring Woods in the athletic equipment industry, which would score a winning touchdown for each team.

In the late 60s, Bud Hodge, Jeff's father, served as Southeast Regional Manager with Brunswick Bowling which had diversified into a school division. This division specialized in school equipment, and Bud called on school systems to offer classroom, athletic, and institutional equipment solutions. Under his leadership and partnership with his wife, June, sales in the Southeast rocketed from $300K to over $3.5M in 3 years. With these impressive results, he was offered the Brunswick School Division Dealership for the Southeast in 1972. This dealership offering was the beginning of the H. E. Hodge Company. Eventually, Jeff took the company reins and has built a strong reputation as a merit-based business with a tradition of success in providing quality facility solutions. For 50 years, H.E. Hodge company's objectives have been to exceed customer expectations. With Jeff eyeing retirement, he considered passing the company on to the next generation. Woods met the owners of H.E. Hodge in 2016 at a job site for a customer in Chamblee, GA. After several years of mentoring Woods, they realized they had found their successor. Woods became the new owner in November 2022 and is poised to take the company to the next level.

Woods is carrying on the family-owned tradition, bringing his fiancé Karina Gomez onto his leadership team. Her role at H.E. Hodge focuses on marketing, branding, communications, lead generation, and other functions that facilitate daily operations. He is focusing on cultivating improvements within the company processes and developing the company's product offering. Woods is also working on improving the customer experience and creating resolutions for the customer's complex needs. His strategy is to provide a quality turn-key solution for all H.E. Hodges customers. H.E. Hodge's standards will exceed customer expectations with innovation and integrity.

Today, H.E. Hodge Company specializes in the preliminary planning, specification writing, budgeting, engineering, field measuring, project managing, and installation of specialty athletic equipment such as goals, lockers, and bleachers for schools and municipalities. H.E. Hodge Company will continue to evolve. Its mission moving forward is to serve our customers based on their need for efficient facility operations and services that ensure our clients have fully operable facilities to coordinate their programming and facilitate their community needs. While the ownership has changed, the winning spirit of the business remains the same.

Experts weigh in on the second Rystad Study, indicating that proppant type is the likely answer for accelerated shale well productivity declines

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Rystad Study, by Rystad Energy, one of North America's most respected energy research firms, focuses on the proppant type used in approximately 900 shale wells in the Permian basin in West Texas. The study compares wells completed using in-basin sand (IBS) with wells completed with northern white sand (NWS), says the Wisconsin Industrial Sand Association (WISA).

Although In-Basin Sand proppants dominate the Permian Market, the study's results indicate that in both the long and short term, most wells would deliver higher productivity using Northern White Sand proppant.

This Rystad Study is the second to examine productivity vs proppant type. It analyses three years of historical data from approximately 900 West Texas Permian Basin shale wells. This latest Rystad Study shows that in 85% of the cases, the short-term cost benefits of completing wells with IBS were lost within the first year when productivity began diverging significantly each year.

Penny Aschenbrenner of Material Spec Labs, which specializes in sand testing, said, "The physical properties of IBS and NWS proppants provide a logical explanation for the difference in production." Material Spec Labs uses API (American Petroleum Institute) testing methods to test frac sand for its customers. "Our job is to test the sand for the physical properties the customer is paying for," said Aschenbrenner. "The idea isn't new. It's sometimes difficult to conceptualize proppant properties and their functionality due to the foreign nature of micro measurements. But if we relate the problem to something we are familiar with, the answer is obvious." she said.

She was not surprised by the negative impact of IBS on wells and questioned whether any technically capable engineer would be either, "The science is pretty simple," she said, "the sand is exposed to extreme pressures and conditions in a well. It is easy to see that the lower-strength sand will crush and clog a well much sooner than a higher-quality proppant. That's what you see in the lab, and it's most likely happening downhole."

NWS became the proppant of choice when the shale revolution began because of its high strength and purity. NWS is a very round, very hard silica sand used to prop open the fractures induced by hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing uses water, sand, and chemicals to fracture shale rock deep beneath the earth's surface. When the fracturing is finished, the liquids are returned to the surface, and the sand remains in place to keep the fractures "propped" open, which is why the sand is called a "proppant."

The Rystad study calls the industry's most recent choices into question. By adopting IBS, It's possible that executives did the right thing at the time for their stakeholders. When oil and gas prices plummeted, producers had already spent significant cash on growing production, with many outspending their cash flow by completing more wells than needed. This ultimately led to overproduction and caused prices to crash heading into the pandemic. By the time Covid hit and prices crashed, producers were running out of cash and perhaps considering bankruptcy. Their only option was reducing costs; IBS was an obvious, short-term solution.

So while IBS may have been a company-saving strategy, its use carried an unforeseen expense. As illustrated in the Rystad study findings, those companies, shareholders, mineral rights holders, and U.S. energy security, in general, are now experiencing decreased well productivity and longevity. Despite the early belief that production would stay the same, according to the production data in the Rystad Study, wells completed with IBS now reveal accelerated economic losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per well after only a few short years compared to wells completed with NWS. Those losses grow more significant as oil and gas prices increase.

The Rystad Study supports the observation that switching to IBS correlates with accelerating decline rates. It suggests serious consideration of the science and reconsidering of the proppant decision choices. Higher energy prices and demand, the ongoing interest in energy independence, and safety and environmental considerations mandate that oil and gas wells run optimally. Mineral rights holders, energy investors, landowners, and energy workers have significant vested economic interests.

Kelly Roofing Goes Global With First International Tesla Solar Roof

NAPLES, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Kelly Roofing has completed the first-ever international Tesla Solar Roof installation, marking a significant milestone in green energy innovation. The Florida-based company managed negotiations, logistics, and operations to extend its services into the international field, starting on the island of Nevis in the West Indies. This installation has opened up worldwide possibilities for the next steps in solar roofing installations for Kelly Roofing.

"This job is the pay off of years of work and innovation, it's incredible to watch it come to life," said Kelly Roofing President Ken Kelly. "Our team has been working with Tesla on building the solar roof deployment process from the ground up since they began developing it in 2019. Roofing innovation is what we do. It's what we've been known for for the last fifty years at Kelly Roofing. This client, and this job have brought us to a new level and let us begin to really see the fruit of that labor."

Installing a Tesla Solar Roof internationally required an intricate, multi-faceted, and carefully honed system to complete. Kelly Roofing worked with the customer to understand their goals and negotiated a general price for the raw job. They then navigated duty and tariffs, shipping fees, customs fees, holding fees, and transportation fees. The company's prior experience in these logistics laid the groundwork for the job in Nevis and made the job seamless for the customer.

"We had the advantage of having solid shipping partners in place and a tested process, it was a matter of fitting the pieces together strategically for what this client needed," Ken Said.

The Kelly Roofing team's extensive experience in navigating Florida's stringent roofing codes allowed them to navigate the legal hurdles of Nevis's roofing regulations. The team also partnered with a local contracting team to ease relations with the government and the local community, providing on-the-job training and bringing the job to life.

The Tesla system is unique in its durability and innovation as well. It is connected to an app that is designed to be intuitive for the homeowner, helping control power consumption and usage. The roofs are also designed to last over time, making them hurricane-force-wind resistant and impact resistant to hail. Each tile is independent, allowing for expansion and contraction in extreme temperatures.

"The Tesla system gives peace of mind to our clients. We saw roofs come out of Hurricane Ian basically untouched and the Powerwall system kept up. There were entire blocks where neighbors were charging their phones at the only house with a Tesla Solar Roof because no one else had power," Ken added.

For the homeowner, the Tesla Solar Roof came with a host of benefits, including ease of use and unmatched durability that provide an excellent return on their investment. In Nevis, the homeowner was able to take their home off-grid without interfering with the quality of their day-to-day life.

Kelly Roofing is now vetting and accepting new international Tesla Solar Roof jobs and is thankful and honored to have been a part of building this customer's home.

Energy Industry Experts Weigh in On Latest Rystad Energy shale well study indicating potential answer for accelerated productivity declines

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. /ScoopCloud/ -- Rystad Energy, one of North America's most respected energy research firms, recently completed a second study of nearly 900 shale wells in the Permian basin in West Texas. The study compares wells completed using in-basin sand (IBS) with wells completed with northern white sand (NWS), says the Wisconsin Industrial Sand Association (WISA).

Although In-Basin Sand dominates the Permian Market, the study's results suggest that even in the short term, the majority of wells would deliver higher productivity using Northern White Sand.

The study, the second in a series, examines three years of historical data obtained from nearly 900 West Texas Permian Basin shale wells. The latest Rystad Study shows that in 85% of the cases studied, the short-term cash benefits of completing wells with IBS were negated within the first year or two, with the productivity divergence growing yearly.

Penny Aschenbrenner of Material Spec Labs, which specializes in sand testing, said, "The physical properties of IBS and NWS proppants provide a logical explanation for the difference in production."

Material Spec Labs uses API (American Petroleum Institute) testing methods to test frac sand for its customers.

"Our job is to test the sand for the physical properties the customer is paying for," says Aschenbrenner. She states, "The concept isn't new. It's sometimes difficult to conceptualize proppant properties and their functionality due to the foreign nature of micro measurements. But if we relate the problem to something we are familiar with, the answer is obvious."

Ashenbrenner was not surprised by the negative impact of IBS on the wells and questioned whether any technically capable engineer would be either, "The science is pretty simple," Ashenbrenner states, "the sand is exposed to extreme pressures and conditions in a well. It is easy to see that the lower-strength sand will crush and possibly clog a well much sooner than a higher-quality proppant. That's what you see in the lab, and it's highly probable that it's happening downhole."

NWS became widely used when the shale revolution began because of its high strength, high purity, and very round silica sand was used to prop open the fractures induced by the hydraulic fracturing process. Hydraulic fracturing uses water, sand, and chemicals to fracture shale rock deep beneath the earth's surface. Once the fracturing has occurred, the fluids are returned to the surface, and the sand remains to keep the fractures "propped" open, which is why the industry terms the sand: "proppant."

The Rystad study challenges the industry's most recent choices. Executives probably did the right thing at the right time for their stakeholders by adapting IBS. When oil and gas prices plummeted, producers had already spent their cash on growing production, with many outspending their cash flow by completing more wells than needed. This ultimately led to overproduction and caused prices to crash heading into the pandemic. By the time Covid hit, and prices crashed, many producers were running out of cash, perhaps staring down bankruptcy. Their only option was to reduce costs, and using IBS was an obvious, short-term solution.

IBS may have been a company-saving strategy, but its use carried an unforeseen long-term expense. As illustrated in the Rystad findings, decreased well productivity and longevity are now being felt by those companies, their shareholders, the mineral rights holders, and possibly, U.S. energy security in general. Despite the early indication that production would stay the same, according to the production data studied by Rystad, wells completed with IBS now reveal accelerated economic losses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per well after only a few short years compared to wells completed with NWS. That spread only grows more significant as oil and gas prices increase.

Other explanations abound. Some industry CEO's are now blaming the rock quality itself for accelerating declines in the past few years. Others fall back on well proximity, sometimes called the "Parent/Child" effect. The Rystad Study supports the observation that switching to IBS is highly correlated with accelerating decline rates.

The Rystad study suggests serious consideration of the science, and a revisit to the proppant decision choices. Higher energy prices and demand, the ongoing interest in energy independence, and safety and environmental considerations mandate that oil and gas wells run optimally. Mineral rights holders, energy investors, landowners, and energy workers have significant vested economic interests.

Vector Structural Engineering Opens New Office in Utah to Increase Engineering Student Opportunities

OREM, Utah /ScoopCloud/ -- Vector Structural Engineering ("Vector") is excited to announce that it's opening a new office in Orem, Utah. This office will focus mainly on the work that its college interns can perform, which includes supporting full time project engineers for tasks on larger projects and also helping to analyze existing residential homes where rooftop solar panels are being installed.

"The location was near a couple of college campuses and we have several student interns working for us so we're hoping to get more of the cream of the crop by being closer to a campus," Jacob Proctor, principal, Vector Structural Engineering, says.

Vector is working to develop engineering processes where projects can be broken down into smaller tasks and their plan is to train interns to help with those tasks. Having an office located near campus will allow them to more efficiently grow this part of the business.

Eric Sumsion, a senior engineer who has been with the company for nearly 10 years, will lead the charge at this new location where there are currently 22 people working out of the office. And the office is conveniently located near the mouth of the Provo Canyon.

"I'm sure that some employees will also take advantage of the fly fishing during their lunch hour," Sumsion says.

Orem is located in the Utah County of Utah and is known for its stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains and its location near outdoor recreation destinations. The city has a thriving economy and is home to numerous high-tech companies and educational institutions. It also offers a rich cultural and recreational experience with parks, museums, shopping centers and more.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to provide jobs to more engineering students, and the growth that we will be able to achieve as a company with this office," Proctor says.

Vector Structural Engineering Opens New Office in Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Vector Structural Engineering is excited to announce that it's opening a new office in Arlington, TX. The reason behind this opening is two-fold: to expand its presence to better serve clients in need of excellent structural engineering services in Texas; and to help employees achieve their career goals.

Scott Van Hoose will lead the charge in this new location and he was largely responsible for its opening. When he approached the company about running his own office, they asked him quite simply, "Where?"

"We really wanted to help Scott grow in his career and when he decided he wanted a chance to run his own office, we didn't want to lose him," Jacob Proctor, CEO, Vector Structural Engineering, says. "Scott is a valuable, loyal employee and has shown that he is trustworthy and a very capable engineer."

Scott had a few states on the table that included California and Florida too, but he landed on Texas because his spouse has family in the region. Currently, there are three full-time engineers in the office and there's room to grow.

Scott's experience is mostly with miscellaneous steel structures, working with steel fabricators to design railings, and stairs, as well as signs and bridges. He also has experience with steel connections and prefabricated metal buildings. Vector's main office has vast experience with designing custom homes and residential businesses.

Proctor shares that all of Vector's engineers have access to a network of structural engineering experts throughout the company in order to serve diverse engineering needs and populations.

"I hope to be able to provide a client-oriented structural engineering service that focuses on providing a quality, economical design while ensuring client satisfaction," Van Hoose says.

The office also hopes to work closely with engineering students in the area to help them gain experience while going to school.

"We're excited about the opportunity to serve the community, and the growth potential for Vector by having our first office in Texas," Proctor says.

Streamlining the family business under the one We Inspect name, will now allow it to serve significantly more mold-sensitive individuals by deploying its 42 years of experience across in-person home inspections, remote consulting and educational offerings.

Unlike other mold inspection companies that rely on antiquated inspection and testing practices which oftentimes dismiss the presence of mold contamination in homes, We Inspects' #FindProveRemove framework has been shaped by the most current scientific findings and proven by more than $20 million dollars of successful mold remediations.

"The majority of mold contamination in homes is hidden, but most mold inspection companies don't understand how to find it," Karr says. "They often rely on outdated testing methods that provide false negatives 70 percent of the time which is dangerous and gives occupants a false sense of security and perpetuates chronic illness."

Karr says that what sets them apart from other mold inspection companies is their ability to find the hidden sources of mold contamination in a home.

"Once we know where it's coming from, it can be remediated and the occupant can begin to heal in their home," he says.

Additional advantages of streamlining these businesses include free training and actionable resources for medical practitioners and their patients (bridging communication gaps), #moldfinders: RADIO podcast, scholarships, discounts for mold-affected people worldwide, DIY home screens and consulting services for anyone regardless of where they live or their financial situation.

About We Inspect, LLC:

ACE Home Services Donates New A/C Unit to Deserving Local in 4th Annual ‘Honor Our Angels’ Giveaway

PHOENIX, Ariz. /ScoopCloud/ -- ACE Home Services, a leading provider of HVAC and plumbing services in the Phoenix metropolitan area, is proud to announce its fourth annual air conditioning unit giveaway. This year, the company has chosen to honor the hard work and dedication of local community member, Sandra Saldana, by providing her with a brand new A/C unit, valued up to $10,000.

Sandra is the founder of Sponsor Orphans in TJ, a charity organization that is dedicated to bringing joy and support to children in orphanages in Baja, California. Sandra began her mission a year ago when she visited her first orphanage to thank the facility for taking care of her cousin, Max, while her aunt was in the process of adopting him. The experience of bringing joy to the children and seeing their faces light up moved Sandra to set a goal of visiting all 100 orphanages and providing orphans with school supplies, backpacks, and toys in Baja, California. Since then, her organization has been able to help 395 children in just one year.

ACE Home Services is honored to be able to contribute to Sandra's mission and looks forward to continuing to support her efforts in the future. The company encourages others to get involved and support organizations like Sponsor Orphans in TJ that are making a positive impact in their communities. ACE Home Services hopes that this small act of kindness of providing Sandra with a new unit will help bring comfort to a person that does so much for others.

For Sandra, winning a new HVAC system is timely as her unit, which was installed when her home was built in 1971, has not been working for some time and she has not had the opportunity to upgrade it herself. ACE's installation team will begin the installation process on February 8th.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to someone who has given so much to our community," said John Trimble, President of ACE Home Services. "Sandra's dedication to helping children in need is truly inspiring, and we are proud to support her in any way we can."

ACE Home Services is committed to making a positive impact on the Phoenix-area community it serves. Throughout each year, the company supports a variety of community outreach programs such as hosting annual Salvation Army Water Drives, A/C Veteran Giveaways, St. Mary's Food Bank Food Drives, donating to Puppies Behind Bars and Homes for Our Troops, and sponsoring AZTV's Hometown Heroes Toy Drive. In addition to these efforts, ACE is also a proud partner of the Wounded Warrior Project which raises money for injured, post 9/11 veterans, and offers discounts for all military members and first responders.

The company is always looking for new ways to give back to the community and make a difference. The company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and provides support for businesses and homes in more than 28 cities, including air-conditioning installation, maintenance and repair, heating equipment placement, bathroom remodeling, water softeners and heaters, water leak protection, heating replacement, and more.

For more information about ACE Home Services and the annual A/C giveaway, please visit their website. Information on Sandra's project can be found here: Facebook Page - https://www.facebook.com/sponsororphansintj.

According to CW Service Pros – There’s A New Reason To Upgrade Your Heating and Cooling System Sooner Than 2023

LEWISVILLE, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- In 2023, the HVAC industry is expected to experience major price increases in the production of new heating and cooling systems due to higher standards in SEER rating systems* taking effect in the new year. Consumers can benefit now by purchasing new HVAC systems before the close of 2022 while SEER standards remain at lower ratings, says CW Service Pros.

CW Service Pros Office Manager Karen Edmonds states, "There's a price hike coming on heating and cooling (HVAC) equipment January 2023. If your HVAC system is on the older side or you are considering replacing it soon, replacing it now could save you a lot of money."

She also stated that both by purchasing and installing a new system before the price increase and by the savings offered - "you will benefit from higher efficiency equipment."

PRICE INCREASES IN THE HVAC INDUSTRY

The U.S. Department of Energy uses SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) ratings to evaluate heating and cooling equipment efficiency. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system is. These ratings ensure all systems meet minimum standards of effectiveness and efficiency. They also help consumers compare and evaluate different systems and make good purchasing decisions.

The Department of Energy has revised its SEER guidelines for 2023 and a 20 SEER system is now considered a 19.2 SEER2 system. As of January 2023, Texas will be phasing out low SEER equipment to establish a higher efficiency standard in both new construction and existing homes. The minimum energy-efficiency standards are being raised for all cooling and heating systems. At the same time, a new SEER ratings system, called SEER2, will go into effect. The new SEER2 system uses different testing conditions and is a more accurate way to evaluate HVAC efficiency.

Due to the coming changes according to Karen Edmonds, "HVAC manufacturers are redesigning HVAC components to meet the new SEER2 requirements. As a result, prices are said to increase on new HVAC systems and components as of January 2023 as much as 30%."

Karen continues, "Once the new regulations go into effect, any units that don't meet the new requirements can't be sold or installed. It is against the federal law to sell or install this equipment after the New Year."

ADDITIONAL REASONS TO UPGRADE NOW

There is another great reason to upgrade now according to Karen, especially if your current HVAC system is older than 10 years or out of warranty. Replacing an old system won't just save you from having to pay more upfront; over time, it'll also save you money because new HVAC systems cost less to operate.

New HVAC models are much more energy-efficient than older ones. They use less energy and provide more heating and cooling power, even compared to models that are only 5 to 10 years old.

If you've been planning to upgrade or replace your current HVAC system in the near future, there are solid reasons to go ahead and get it done before the end of 2022.

For expert advice on choosing a heating and cooling system, plus professional HVAC installation, CW Service Pros can be of assistance in choosing the best unit for a home and install.

Dallas Roofing Company Expands into Solar offering Solar PV Roofing and Power Backup Systems

DALLAS, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- The new U.S. Climate bill offers generous incentives, making now an ideal time to go solar expanding the tax credit from 26 percent to 30 percent. Rising energy costs and a struggling Texas power grid are causing many homeowners to look for energy saving options and batteries to power their homes during outages. That's why KPost, a leading Dallas roofing and waterproofing company, is excited to announce that it's recently expanding its service offerings to install Tesla solar roof systems and Powerwall.

Tesla solar roofs take existing roofs and essentially turn them into clean energy machines that are not only practical, but also add a superior aesthetic to your roof. These roofs come with a class A-fire rating, 25-year warranty and a visually-modern appeal while tested to withstand up to 166 mph winds and 1.75" hail.

And, with a true BIVP built-in photovoltaic, if one panel breaks, only that one needs to be found and repaired. The rest will continue to work so there's no wasted energy or downtime. It's a plug and play design.

These Tesla solar roof systems are a win-win for homeowners as they are low-maintenance, save money on electricity and have the added benefit of increasing a home's value. In some cases, a utility will credit homeowners for energy sent to the power grid, which can be applied towards future utility bills. This billing mechanism is called net energy metering (NEM).

Pairing the Tesla solar roof with Powerwall is becoming a preferred system for Texas residents as the power grid is strained due to excessive temperatures and population growth. The Powerwall is an integrated battery system that stores your solar energy for backup protection, so when the grid goes down, power stays on. The system detects outages and automatically recharges with sunlight to keep appliances running for days.

"Rising energy costs have many homeowners interested in installing traditional solar panels on their homes," Matthew Jaynes, vice President of residential, says. "Many solar systems are installed on asphalt shingle roofs which are very susceptible to hail damage and only last about 10-15 years in Texas while the solar panels are expected to last 25 years. The Tesla Solar Roof combines a long-lasting roof system with PV panels saving homeowners over the short and long term. We're looking forward to what the future holds in the solar industry."

About KPost:

KPost Roofing & Waterproofing, a 400+ employee company, is the official Roofing & Waterproofing Partner of the Dallas Cowboys. They have been protecting roofs in the DFW Metroplex for more than 18 years, providing customers with safety, quality and value with each roof installation or repair.

Virginia’s Leader in Lightning Protection Celebrates 75th Anniversary with Community Event to Support Landmark Fire Prevention Week Campaign

RICHMOND, Va. /ScoopCloud/ -- Two champions of fire prevention and safety are celebrating anniversary milestones this October. Loehr Lightning Protection Co., Virginia's leader in lightning protection system (LPS) services since 1947, is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA) to support the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW) and celebrate its own 75th company anniversary with a community event at the Hazen Memorial Library, in historic Bon Air, Va., on Thursday, October 6, from 3 to 7 p.m.

"Lightning is the weather threat that affects most people in most parts of our state and country, and it's also a leading fire threat," said Kimberly Loehr, president at Loehr Lightning Protection Co. and member of the National Lightning Safety Council. "A lightning strike can pack over 300 million volts of power-mega electricity that can ignite a devastating home or structural fire in seconds."

While safety standard-compliant lightning protection systems (LPS) can provide a safe and effective grounding network to protect structures from the lightning threat, most property owners aren't aware of their availability.

According to experts at the Lightning Protection Institute, the NFPA 780 Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems is recognized as the most comprehensive resource for reducing lightning risks at U.S. properties. The NFPA regularly reviews LPS methods and materials through its code process to make sure that lightning protection methods and materials keep pace with our ever-changing building technology.

This year's FPW campaign, "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape™" seeks to educate the public about simple, but important actions for staying safe in the event of a home fire.

"Today's homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds," said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.

"Lightning strikes that occur in the darkness of night can be especially difficult to recognize and detect," said Loehr. "Even in the light of day, lightning fires aren't always visible in their initial stages and it's not unusual for these blazes to originate in enclosed spaces like the attic, basement or electrical panels."

NFPA's Fire Prevention campaign is believed to be the longest running public health and safety observance on record. Since 1922, the country has seen huge progress in the fire safety movement with the construction of fire-resistant buildings and improvements in fire suppression techniques.

"Fire Prevention Month is a good time to remind property owners about a very common, very destructive, yet little understood fire risk," added Loehr, who is a NFPA Building Fire Safety Systems section member and longtime supporter of the organization's October campaign. "Partnering with fire safety officials is just one of the ways we've helped build lightning safe communities throughout the years."

To find out more about Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 9-15) programs and activities in Bon Air, Va. please contact Chesterfield Fire and EMS. For more information about Fire Prevention Week and fire prevention in general, visit https://www.nfpa.org/fpw and sparky.org.

Chase Doors Celebrates 90 Year Anniversary with Launch of National Traffic Door Day on September 28

CINCINNATI, Ohio /ScoopCloud/ -- Chase Industries, Inc., founded by Chase Blum in 1932, began its operation as an insulated walk-in cooler and specialty refrigeration equipment manufacturer. Ninety years later, Chase Doors is the world's oldest, largest, and most progressive manufacturer of double-acting impact traffic doors and specialty doors. Chase Doors is part of the Senneca Holdings family of brands.

To celebrate this milestone, the National Archives has officially designated September 28 as National Traffic Door Day. This day will celebrate Chase and Eliason traffic doors and the businesses that use them to keep customers and employees safe.

Traffic doors create an efficient traffic flow in restaurants, retail and industrial spaces and help provide peace, tranquility, and a stylish separation solution where folks dine and shop so they can enjoy the environment and company around them. They add value and efficiency to applications with multi-directional openings where visual, sound, and environmental barriers are required. These doors are extremely durable and capable of withstanding the wear and tear associated with sales-to-back room and walk-in cooler openings in high volume establishments. Known for their long-term value, they are ideal for use in supermarkets, retail establishments, institutions, industries, restaurants, and food service operations.

You can celebrate this day by taking a selfie in front of a traffic door at your favorite restaurant, retail store, etc., and posting to social media platforms, using #NationalTrafficDoorDay.

At Chase and Eliason, safety is number one. Please be sure to follow all safety protocols when capturing your selfie. You can also support restaurants and businesses that have traffic doors at their locations and thank the service industry individuals that use our doors.

"This day is a celebration of all the employees and customers who have produced and enjoyed our beautiful and protective traffic doors over the past 90 years. We thank all for their dedication and loyalty to Senneca," said Clark Hale, Chief Executive Officer, Senneca Holdings.

"Many companies do not survive longer than 5 years and even less exist for more than 20 years. 90 years of supplying retail, restaurant, and industrial industries with innovative solutions for their openings is how Chase Doors has thrived. Thank you to all our employees and industry partners on achieving this significant milestone," said Hal Shapiro, SVP, Sales and Marketing.

"We are proud to be the industry leader of traffic door solutions for our customers for 90 years. Protecting our customer's assets by providing top quality products is a top priority at Chase/Eliason. We understand the importance of our product in restaurants, retail and industrial spaces and will continue to listen to our customers and work with them to develop a product that meets their needs. Happy National Traffic Door Day!" said Jason Horn, Director of Operations.

"I have had the pleasure of being associated with Chase for more than thirty-five of the company's first 90 years. The partnerships developed over the years with our customers have fueled our growth these first 90 years and will remain key to sustaining our success in the future. We thank all the customers who have made these first 90 years possible," said Mike Evans, Vice President of National Sales Accounts.

"I have had the honor of representing the Chase/ Senneca products for thirty-five plus years. This company has always represented not only great products, but great people!" said Glenn Oltmanns, Senior Vice President, OEM Account Sales.

"Chase Doors is observing 90 years of great customers, people, and products. Without having the best of all three we would not have had the longevity that we celebrate. Thank you to our employees - Your creativity, hard work and dedication inspire us. Thank you to our customers - Your support, loyalty and satisfaction drive and motivate us to continuously improve. I look forward to our continued success and I am honored to be part of such a wonderful team," said Rick Paterni, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management.

Taking it Down to Earth: Debunking Myths about Lightning Protection

CUMBERLAND, Maine /ScoopCloud/ -- Old and new myths about lightning protection continue to circulate through the internet and unsafe lightning protection products still manage to find their way into construction job specifications in many parts of the U.S. To help safeguard properties from a leading weather threat, the National Lightning Safety Council (NLSC) is stressing the importance of separating fact from fallacy about lightning protection systems (LPS).

"Despite the wealth of accurate information on lightning, lightning safety and lightning protection, there are still many myths and misunderstandings that persist," said John Jensenius, a lightning safety specialist with the NLSC.

Just in time for Lightning Safety Awareness Week, the NLSC debunks five common myths about lightning protection:

1 - Lightning rods attract lightning

Unfortunately, this is a common misconception about lightning protection. Lightning protection systems and strike termination devices (industry name for lightning rods which are part of the system) work in conjunction with a grounding network to intercept a lightning strike and provide a safe and effective path that dissipates lightning's harmful electricity into the earth.

2 - Tall trees protect a structure against lightning

False. Lightning can side-flash from a tree and hit a nearby structure. Additionally, when lightning strikes and travels underground along tree roots, it can enter a structure by jumping onto nearby telephone, cable and electrical lines, introducing harmful surges. Lightning can also injure a tree from a direct strike, causing limbs to split and fall onto a nearby structure.

3 - Homes and building are already grounded and don't need lightning protection

The electrical ground installed by an electrician is there to protect the internal workings of the electrical system in a building to accommodate everyday electricity usage-it's not designed to handle the mega electricity (100 million + volts of power or 200 kA of electrical energy!) that a lightning strike can pack.

4 - A lightning rod is easy to install

Lightning protection is a complex system (not just a "rod") of UL-listed materials and methods which comply with nationally-recognized safety standards of the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL). LPS is not a do-it-yourself project. Only trained experts like LPI-certified lightning protection contractors should install lightning protection systems, since design and installation is rarely within the scope of expertise held by homeowners, general contractors or roofers.

5 - Surge protection and "whole house" arresters protect structures from lightning

False. Surge protection is only one element of a complete lightning protection system. A grounding network for lightning (lightning protection system) must be implemented to provide structural protection. A LPS that meets national safety standards includes strike termination devices, down conductors, bonding, grounding and UL-rated surge protection devices.

"Lightning just wants to get to ground and a safety standard compliant lightning protection system helps it get there without harmful impact to the structure, contents or building systems," said Kimberly Loehr, a lightning protection specialist and member of the NLSC. "The concept is simple, but the safety standards are complex and detail principles including zone of protection, common bonding of grounded systems, potential equalization of ground impedance, lightning risk assessment and much more," explained Loehr.

Washington Siding Company Believes Homeowners Deserve Better Than ‘Free Estimates’

SEATTLE, Wash. /ScoopCloud/ -- Homeowners have been inundated in recent years with offers from contracting companies for "free estimates" for siding, roofing, window replacement, and any other home maintenance project they may need. But Builders Service Company in Washington is taking a different approach to helping folks improve their homes.

Often, companies that advertise free estimates don't offer the level of service and customization of price, materials, and timeline that homeowners need to get the most out of their home improvements. These free quotes usually entail a quick, impersonal and dubious price estimate that is likely to increase by up to 50% between when the quote is given and the service is booked, a bait-and-switch that many homeowners can no doubt relate to and find very frustrating.

But Builders Service Company does it differently. The Builders philosophy is that a home is the most important investment someone can make, and is worth much more than a free quote can properly assess. And while there is no cost to book a consultation with their home exterior experts, it's so much more than a free estimate. When Builders Service Company meets with a customer, they do so with the goal of providing the homeowner with everything they need to make the right decision for their home, from materials, to services, to timeline, to pricing information that will hold up to the changing markets.

"We take the time to truly understand the homeowner's needs, and what the best choice will be for them in terms of products, services, and project timeline," says Builders owner Mason Ruppel. "Your home deserves world-class materials that will stand the test of time and the highest quality service. When I meet with you, I'll make sure you get that, even if it takes four or five hours."

Builders Service Company offers personalized in-home consultations and custom design appointments for siding, roofing, windows, and other home contracting services.

About Builders Service Company:

Serving the Greater Pacific Northwest, Builders Service Company has been in business as a residential home improvement contractor since 1974, providing installation services and excellent products that will last a lifetime. Builders Service Company strives to provide the best workmanship and accuracy, professionalism, customer care, and affordability to all its customers, regardless of the project, to help clients invest meaningfully in their homes. They are the two-time recipients of the Golden Hammer Contractor Award from Alcoa Building Products, and are the designated Dealer of Distinction for Preservation Windows and Siding.
