The Whole Child Receives Bezos Day 1 Families Fund Grant to Help End Homelessness in Los Angeles County

WHITTIER, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Whole Child, a lead housing agency for families experiencing homelessness in Southeast Los Angeles County, announced that it has been selected to receive a $5 million grant from the Bezos Day One Families Fund.

"We are honored to be one of the recipients of this year's Bezos Day 1 Families Fund grant," says Constanza Pachon, CEO of The Whole Child. "This grant comes at a critical point in the fight against homelessness in Los Angeles County. It will enable us to serve many more families with children experiencing homelessness."

This one-time grant, awarded to organizations moving the needle on family homelessness, will allow The Whole Child to pilot various initiatives including employment and education/training services, longer term shallow subsidies to support housing retention for families and larger flex fund pools to remove barriers not usually contemplated on regular housing/rental assistance programs. It will also help build needed specialized shelter beds for families experiencing homelessness in the region.

The Whole Child is one of 32 nonprofits across the U.S. to receive the second annual Day 1 Families Fund grants see full list, as part of a broad investment to help solve family homelessness. The Day 1 Families Fund issued a total of $98.5 million in grants this year. The fund worked with an advisory board of homelessness advocates and experts who identified and invited organizations to submit grant proposals to support their efforts to address homelessness.

"With the help of The Whole Child, my family was able to find a place to call home after leaving a violent partner left us sleeping in motels," explains Melina Gomez, who was helped by The Whole Child Housing. "Having a safe home for me and my boys has provided the stability I needed to find a new job and pay off my student loan debt. For the first time this year, we will be hosting Thanksgiving at our place! The Whole Child helps so many families and children. I can't wait to see how much more they will be able to accomplish with this grant."

The Bezos Day One Fund was launched in 2018 with a commitment of $2 billion and a focus on two areas: funding existing nonprofits that help homeless families, and creating a network of new, nonprofit tier-one preschools in low-income communities. The Day 1 Families Fund issues annual leadership awards to organizations and civic groups doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families. The vision statement comes from the inspiring Mary's Place in Seattle: no child sleeps outside.

Pop Up World’s ‘Investor Connector’ Aims to Disrupt Shark Tank and Dragon’s Den

LONDON, U.K. /ScoopCloud/ -- If you are a budding entrepreneur looking for start-up funds your only option could be family and friends, crowdfunding or maybe just maybe if you are accepted, an appearance on Shark Tank or Dragon's Den. Graham Jules, founder and CEO of Pop Up World is familiar with the plight of the underdog and small business owner.

In 2014 he battled with media giants Marvel and DC Entertainments over the trade mark "Superheroes" due to the title of his start-up manual "Business Zero To Superhero." Amazingly, after a two-and-a-half-year legal battle, he won.

Following on from that success Jules has launched an alternative to the well-loved entrepreneurial TV programmes, an app called Investor Connector.

Jules says, "The problem is, despite crowdfunding and programmes like Dragon's Den, funding is still hard to come by for many start-ups. Investor Connector is like a Tinder for Investors! Start-ups get to post their pitch decks online and investors use criteria they set to download or 'like' the proposals. If an investor downloads a pitch deck the start-up can contact the investor and begin a dialogue. Investors can swipe or scroll on their mobile or desktop."

The platform boasts 800+ venture capital and angel investment networks. Jules adds, "It's important to note that we do not get involved in any deals or take any commission. We simply act as a 'dating site' for start-ups and potential investors."

So how does Investor Connector compare to crowdfunding where multiple investors or the "crowd" invest in a start-up venture? Jules replies, "Investor Connector is different. Crowdfunding aims to receive multiple micro-investments and if the start-up's target is reached the venture is funded. With Investor Connector we are looking to match start-ups with firms that can fund your business in its entirety, so no middle man or multiple shareholders or success fees here."

It's a well-known statistic that 90% of start-ups fail, one of the key reasons stated for that failure is often lack of funding.

Jules comments, "Yes, it's a sad statistic but ironically there have never been so many opportunities for start-ups. The problem is one of visibility. If you can't get your start-up under the nose of the right investment firm, it's tough. Raising funds is a full-time job in itself, Investor Connector aims to lighten that load."

So, if you are a new business wary of being bitten by the Dragon's or Sharks, Pop Up World's Investor Connector may be an option to investigate.

Start-ups can register by going to https://popupworld.co.uk/investorconnector-land2

Investment firms can access the app by contacting Pop Up World at https://popupworld.co.uk/contact

Diligence Capital Advisors Sources Capital for Iconic South Jersey Swim Club

MARLTON, N.J. /ScoopCloud/ -- Diligence Capital Advisors is excited to announce that it has sourced new capital investments for the Chartwell Swim Club, a legendary swim club and day camp located in Marlton, New Jersey. The financing was made by a Philadelphia based investment company.

The capital will be re-invested into the swim club's existing amenities and programs by the club's operator James B. Johnston, Jr, who has successful operated the Chartwell Swim Club for decades.

Chartwell Swim Club is generally considered South Jersey's #1 swim club and day camp for kids. It spans over 13 acres and features 6 pools, giant water slides, food and drink cafes, picnic areas, tennis courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, a croquet course, shuffle board, cornhole, horseshoes, softball and soccer fields.

"We were given a task to recapitalize a specialty asset in a matter of weeks due to the need to utilize the capital before the winter season to accommodate the club's growth and anticipated membership for the upcoming summer season. I am very pleased that we were able to perform in such a short time frame for the Swim Club's owner and operator," said Joe Rocco, co-founder of Diligence Capital Advisors and long-standing former resident of nearby Medford, N.J.

The closing of a financing transaction for a specialty asset in just a few weeks demonstrates that Diligence Capital Advisors is well-suited to handle just about any financing request on any asset class.

"I am very happy with the job that Diligence Capital Advisors did for me in this deal," said Chartwell's owner James B. Johnston, Jr. "They sourced and closed a substantial capital investment for me in a very short time frame which will allow me to grow my business exponentially."

The Swim Club recently introduced "Chartwell Happy Day Camp" to Chartwell's members, which is South Jersey's most exclusive day camp for children ages 4-14. Chartwell Happy Day Camp features sports and games, fitness programs, swim lessons, arts & crafts, science experiments, karate demonstrations, inflatable speedway racing, a petting zoo and exciting shows. The Chartwell Happy Day Camp has been so successful that additional capital was needed to fund and accommodate its anticipated growth for the 2020 season.

Diligence Capital Advisors team has sourced and/or closed senior debt, mezzanine debt, JV equity and preferred equity deals valued over 2 billion dollars.

Brett Wiltsey, Esquire of Dilworth Paxson LLP represented the Chartwell Swim Club in connection with the financing. Tricia Magrann of City Abstract LLC in Haddonfield, N.J. provided title insurance for the transaction. Jared Cobert, co-founder and Managing Partner of Diligence Capital Advisors, worked alongside Mr. Rocco in the closing of this transaction.

Polyient Labs Co-sponsoring Blockchain for Good Conference in San Francisco, Oct. 25-27

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Phoenix-based Polyient Labs, an early-stage, blockchain-startup incubator, is co-sponsoring Blockchain for Good, October 25 -27, 2019 in San Francisco. The three-day event gives community-minded founders and organizers an overview of blockchain technology as well as insights into how the technology can be harnessed to help nonprofits hit their social-impact goals.

The agenda includes keynote speakers and workshops where participants can pitch ideas, build teams and get real-world feedback from industry experts on their proposed solutions.

Best of all, the top-three top pitches will be awarded prizes - including exclusive coaching sessions with Polyient mentors.

For Polyient CEO, Brad Robertson, connecting purpose-driven initiatives to blockchain technology is a natural fit. He knows firsthand that launching and managing a successful nonprofit is a never-ending challenge.

"Blockchain is being deployed across a spectrum of industries, but the nonprofit sector is one area where the technology can really add value," says Robertson. "Most nonprofits operate on shoestring budgets and are fueled by blood, sweat and tears. Every day, they fight to get discovered, improve internal efficiencies, provide transparency and earn recognition. Blockchain can help deliver on all four fronts."

But, Robertson adds, non-technical NPO executives will also benefit from participating in Blockchain for Good. Sign up for the event here - http://communities.techstars.com/usa/san-francisco/startup-weekend/15241

Smarter Business Funds: Introducing The Free Small Business Marketing Program

HOUSTON, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Smarter Business Funds, a thought leader in alternative finance & marketing consultancy, is proud to announce the FREE small business marketing program. Headquartered in Houston, Smarter Business Funds was established with the primary goal of helping small businesses acquire business capital, quickly and easily, in support of their long-term success.

Moreover, Smarter Business Funds is particularly focused on the SMB (small-medium business) sector that offers a wide range of financial options and marketing solutions.

"Our primary business is to provide finance & marketing consultancy services for SMBs," said Thomas Haaland, CEO of Smarter Business Funds, while talking about the company. He added, "In general, our customers are looking to be educated on their financing options, speed, flexibility and ease of doing business in support of their business growth goals."

According to the CEO, Smarter Business Funds business model is based on a foundation of trust with a goal of establishing a long-term relationship and not a transactional one.

Alternative-Finance and business advances have gained immense momentum in business financing. Business advances are popular due to their speed and hassle-free nature. However, this can be expensive capital. We spend much of our time consulting our customers on their funding options that are closely aligned with their growth goals. Additionally, we see there still exists a gap between many SMB owners and their customers. It is estimated 46% of small businesses do not have a website, making it harder for their customers to find them. The FREE small business marketing program is designed to close the gap, offsetting the cost of a business advance.

"Business advances are very important and fill a critical need. Whether for fast funding, relatively new business, bad credit or others, a business advance may make sense," said Diana Rodriguez, CMO, Smarter Business Funds, while talking about advances. "We designed the FREE marketing program to invest with our customers in their growth."

She added, "The custom nature of the program can range from turnkey solutions for new-to-digital customers, a website, optimizing GMB or video for social media ads." Post funding, Smarter Business Funds performs a free consultation to determine the most effective solution for customers.

About Smarter Business Funds:

Smarter Business Funds was founded on the principle that acquiring a business loan should not be difficult, and that your funding partners should provide value beyond a transaction. Our founders have a collective 70+ years of experience in business consulting with an expertise in financing and marketing. Crown Financial Introduces More Value with Their New Invoice Factoring Calculator

HOUSTON, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Crown Financial, a Houston-based business funding provider, has increased client insight into AP factoring with the addition of their powerful tool, the invoice factoring calculator. Companies seeking working capital can easily calculate costs associated with factoring, making the process more transparent and the decision to factor their accounts receivable much easier.

While invoice factoring is not a loan, Crown Financial charges a small factoring rate when advancing invoice funds to their customers. Crown's invoice factoring service is one of the most competitive in the industry as they save customers thousands by allowing a 2-week timespan between each rate assessment, compared to a 1% fee assessed weekly by their competitors.

With the addition of the invoice factoring calculator, customers can quickly see all fees associated with Crown's factoring service, and compare those rates to other factoring companies. Requiring only 3 numbers - the invoice amount, invoice percentage advanced, and number of weeks until invoice is paid - the calculator quickly provides the customer with a crystal-clear fee schedule and a preliminary factoring rate as low as 1.5%. The advantage of seeing all associated costs before making a decision to factor removes any pressure in the process and keeps the customer at ease knowing they decide if and when they are ready to move forward.

Crown's loyalty and devotion to customer satisfaction is proven in the introduction of the calculator and clear fee schedule it computes. Crown Financial account manager, Brandon Hooks said, "We'll do anything we can to make the factoring process easier and more stress-free for our clients."

With low factoring fees, the no term contract, and high advance percentages, Crown's factoring service is bar none. Add in the calculator and Crown has made a brilliant move for their business and their customers, shortening the factoring process, increasing customer trust, and converting many unhappy customers from other factoring companies.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. /ScoopCloud/ -- Innova Memphis, a Memphis-based early stage venture capital firm, is pleased to announce the acquisition of its portfolio company Arkis Biosciences. Knoxville-based Arkis, a neuro-surgical medical device company, has been acquired by Integra LifeSciences Holding Corporation, a leading medical technology company.

"The acquisition of Arkis Biosciences strengthens Integra's offerings in neurocritical care and Integra's position as the world leader in advanced catheter technology," according to a press release issued on July 29 by Integra; furthermore Dan Reuvers, president of Codman Specialty Surgical says: "Today's acquisition expands our leading portfolio to better treat patients and underscores our commitment to addressing unmet needs in patient care."

Successful Repayment of $27 Million to EB-5 Investors in New Commercial Enterprise Managed by A&J Capital, Inc.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- A&J Capital, Inc. (A&J), a financial services & advisory firm specializing in EB-5, private equity, and investment management, today announced its latest milestone of repaying $27 million of capital to EB-5 investors for one of its managed new commercial enterprises (NCE). A&J serves as a manager of the NCE and oversees its day-to-day activities, including the administration of the EB-5 loan.

The $45 million construction project of the 213,508 square foot mixed-use retail shopping center known as California Marketplace in the heart of Los Angeles' Koreatown commenced in 2013 and was completed in 2016. The final buildout of California Marketplace is comprised of 36,848 square feet supermarket, 44,603 square feet of retail and commercial space, and a parking facility. The key financing component of the project was a $27 million senior construction EB-5 loan which was structured and administered by A&J.

The 54 EB-5 investors who invested in the NCE were responsible for creating 592 new jobs, a key component of the EB-5 Program. The jobs were generated from both construction and operational activities of California Marketplace. The NCE is in the final phase of fulfilling its requirements of returning capital to those investors who have met their immigration objectives.

"There is no greater pride and accomplishment for us here at A&J to oversee this project from its infancy all the way to its operational phase, resulting in the creation of new American jobs, while at the same time satisfying EB-5 investor objectives of obtaining permanent green cards and recovering capital invested. This is exactly what the EB-5 investors, the development team, and the community bargained for from the outset," said H. Harry Aharonian, Vice President at A&J Capital.

A&J currently administers a number of NCE's that have EB-5 invested capital in EB-5 qualifying real estate development projects across the United States, including in California, Florida, Louisiana and Texas. These projects at their respective completions are set to create over 15,000 new jobs for the US workforce and revitalize the communities in which they are located.

Financial Research Firm Reveals New FLEX-10 Index to Track Performance of the Market’s Top Ten Stocks

BALTIMORE, Md. /ScoopCloud/ -- Charles Street Research (CSR), a financial research and publishing think tank based in Baltimore, Maryland, recently revealed a brand new performance index for one of their top research services.

* Retirement and income expert Charles Sizemore leads development of portfolio strategy merging value and momentum metrics
* Index backtested over 20 years to cover wide range of market environments and two major crashes
* Overall performance phenomenal ... shows results that would have crushed all major benchmark indexes.

Developed by Charles Sizemore, CSR's Chief Retirement and Income Strategist, the FLEX-10 Index tracks the performance of a model portfolio comprised of the market's top ten value and momentum stocks each month.

Not to be confused with benchmark indexes like the S&P 500 or the Nasdaq, the FLEX-10 Index tracks a very small, selective group of stocks based on 27 different criteria. The index is updated monthly to reflect the rapidly changing market environment.

"For the past decade, many investors have felt like geniuses riding this ten-year bull market," Sizemore says of the new index. "But those outstanding gains have primarily been driven by about 10-20 high-flying stocks."

"Now, we're starting to see many of those stocks come under pressure. Anyone investing in a fund that tracks a broad market index is at increased risk in the months ahead. And if we're headed for a recession, anyone broadly invested in the market is likely to get crushed, just like in 2008."

Sizemore's FLEX-10 Index is designed to perform in any market environment, including a hedged position when volatility starts to pick up.

While he's the first to admit this strategy won't outperform the benchmarks every month, he's extremely confident in the long-term outlook.

"We ran an aggressive backtest all the way back to 1999 to test this out. I'm confident we've covered just about every market condition, including two major market crashes. While recently value stocks have fallen a bit out of favor, I expect the FLEX-10 Index to vastly outperform the benchmarks over the next decade."

To learn more about the FLEX-10 Index, access Sizemore's recent presentation, delivered to Charles Street Research subscribers at The Rich Investor.

Ward Henderson Management to Hold Fundraising Dinner to Benefit Taiwanese Children Living in Poverty

TAIPEI, Taiwan /ScoopCloud/ -- Taipei, Taiwan-based Ward Henderson Management will hold its annual fundraising dinner in July of this year. Proceeds from the event will go to a local children's foundation to help with the running costs of the organization.

Children growing up in families affected by poverty are less likely to receive the essential necessities such as education, food, clothing and proper medical care. These children are often less likely to develop properly and may fail to reach their optimum physical, social and cognitive potential, placing them in a disadvantaged position later in life.

Although the incidence of children living in conditions of poverty is relatively low, with only 25 percent of children experiencing conditions of poverty during their first five years of life and less than 10 percent living in persistent poverty past the age of 6, Ward Henderson Management has undertaken to raise much-needed funds to support organizations working to assist needy children in Taiwan.

"A major contributing factor to the prevalence of children living in poverty in Taiwan is parents who are either unemployed or lack the level of education required to secure employment. As children who are living in poverty may face similar issues to their parents as adults, it is imperative that something is done to break the cycle," says John Maxwell, Head of Public Relations at Ward Henderson Management.

Ward Henderson Management's annual fundraising dinner will include a silent auction and the firm is calling on other companies in the financial services industry to donate prizes for it.

Warrington Shaw Seeks Taiwanese Sports Team to Sponsor

TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan /ScoopCloud/ -- Taipei, Taiwan-based investment house, Warrington Shaw is planning to sponsor a local grassroots sports team. As part of an initiative to give back to the local community, Warrington Shaw plans to select a promising sports team from Taiwan each year and provide sponsorship to help pay for costs related to training, travel expenses, kit, facilities and equipment.

Grassroots sports typically cover all disciplines of sport played by non-professional competitors on a local or national level through institutions working for nonprofit.

Potential recipients of the sponsorship will need to apply to Warrington Shaw by means of a motivational letter detailing the history and goals of their sports team.

"It is very clear that there is tremendous local sports talent in Taiwan but at a grassroots level, many teams with great promise simply lack the necessary funding to pursue their ambitions and fulfill their potential," says Ms. An Tsao, Head of Public Relations at Warrington Shaw. "Providing much needed funding to support these teams is a real and lasting way of giving back to the community."

Not only has early sport participation been linked to higher self-esteem in the youth of Taiwan, statistically, youths who are regular participants in sporting activities are less likely to fall victim to substance abuse and commit crimes.

Friday the 13th original stars reunite in ’13 Fanboy’!

NOGAL, N.M. /ScoopCloud/ -- "Friday the 13th" has a passionate fan base that has been waiting for almost a decade for another installment. With the lawsuit between Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham still not resolved a new film isn't likely for several more years, but Voorhees Films has a solution for your much-needed fix, "13 Fanboy."

"Horror fans are the best," says Deborah Voorhees, star of "Friday the 13th: A New Beginning," and writer/director of "13 Fanboy," "but every once in a while, you get that one that feels scary. I've received texts saying, 'I'm watching you right now,' or 'wouldn't it be cool if you were killed like you died in the film?'"

These experiences sparked the idea a year ago, when Voorhees met with veteran producer Joel Paul Reisig. The idea frightened her because "It was just so damn real."

"After several sleepless nights, I realized that if it scared me this much, it would scare others too. I had been looking for a film for horror fans for a while. It just feels like it is the time for this film," says Voorhees.

Together Voorhees and Reisig wrote the script, then gathered up some of the most popular actors from the original "Friday the 13th" movies including CJ Graham, Thom Mathews, Tracie Savage, Ron Sloan, Judie Aronson, and of course Deborah Voorhees.

"13 Fanboy" is not a Paramount film. This is a totally separate series, with no association to the original "Friday" movies.

"Our horror thriller brings your favorite 'Friday the 13th' actors back to the big screen in an entirely new horror series about a fan, who takes his love for the series too far and targets the real-life women from the franchise to kill them," says Reisig.

For financing Voorhees and Reisig have turned to Indiegogo.

"The truth is, studios just were not interested. They think fans are not interested in the original stars," Voorhees admitted. "But we know that our fans still love us!" With the success that Jamie Lee Curtis is currently having with "Halloween" it certainly seems that Voorhees is right!

Byte Back Wins CDN $1 Million TD Grant for Expansion

WASHINGTON, D.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- Today, TD announced Byte Back as one of 10 recipients of the inaugural TD Ready Challenge grants. Each recipient organization will receive CDN $1 million (USD $775,000) to help them scale innovative solutions aimed at preparing North Americans for the economy of the future.

With a focus on financial security, the recipients of this year's Challenge will apply the grants to solutions they have designed to help workers transform their existing skills and build new ones and help reduce barriers to STEM training for underrepresented groups to open doors for individuals who have the greatest risk of falling behind due to rapid technological advancement.

Byte Back is a Washington, D.C.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects communities with inclusive tech training and pathways into living-wage careers. With the CDN $1 million investment, Byte Back will expand into Baltimore in 2019 and begin to fully explore a national expansion. This is the first time in 21 years that the nonprofit has expanded outside the Washington, D.C. region.

The technology skills gap Byte Back addresses isn't unique to its home region. In the U.S., 28 million adults are living in poverty. Since 2002, the U.S. economy has lost 28 million low tech jobs that have disappeared or now require medium and high tech skills. Byte Back provides a unique solution for adults who haven't had the opportunity to use technology in their careers.

"The changing workplace presents new opportunities for a prosperous economy, but we must grow in ways that allow everyone a chance to succeed," says Bharat Masrani, Group President and Chief Executive Officer, TD Bank Group. "Fortunately, there is no shortage of innovative ideas to support greater income stability - ideas that can open doors and help people feel more confident in the future."

With this investment from TD, Byte Back will train at least 72 people in Baltimore in the first year and set the stage for the organization's national expansion.

"Thousands of adults are still struggling to succeed in the digital economy, and we cannot leave them behind. They deserve education opportunities, they deserve to fully participate in a digital world, and they deserve living-wage careers," said Elizabeth Lindsey, executive director of Byte Back. "We're really dreaming now about what it looks like for our impact to expand to hundreds and thousands more people across the country."

About the TD Ready Challenge:

Acting as a springboard for social innovation, TD established the TD Ready Challenge to identify and support scalable solutions to a specific issue identified within The Ready Commitment. In its inaugural year, the issue of focus for the TD Ready Challenge was helping to increase income stability and encouraged non-for-profit organizations across North America that are working on innovative solutions to help increase income stability and help improve the skills people will need for the economy of the future. In total, TD granted $10 million (CDN) under the 2018 Challenge.

From over 200 submissions, TD shortlisted 15 semi-finalists who presented their solutions on September 7, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario.

These semi-finalists were then judged in two rounds by a panel composed of TD executives and external subject matter experts, including Linda Nazareth, economist and trends expert, and Jennifer Tescher, president and CEO, Centre for Financial Services Innovation (CFSI). Ten finalists were then chosen by the panel at the close of the second round.

About Byte Back:

Byte Back connects communities with inclusive tech training and pathways into living-wage careers. For 21 years, its innovative training pathway has helped hundreds of graduates move from low tech skills to recognized certifications and into careers that use technology.

The Pap Corps Receives $100,000 Matching Gift Challenge by The Yass Family

BOCA RATON, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research has announced a $100,000 matching gift challenge by The Yass Family. This gift will be utilized to enhance the 2018 Dr. Kevin Berkowitz Memorial End of Year Giving Campaign, which will be directed towards melanoma research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Jerry Yass made this generous gift during the recent Pap Corps Presidents' Meeting at Boca West Country Club in honor of his late wife, Sybil, who died in 2001 from melanoma.

"We are tremendously grateful to Jerry Yass and his family for making this matching gift to us," said The Pap Corps' CEO David Bakelman. "Jerry is one of our most dedicated and generous Pap Corps members, and we are honored that his donation will encourage others to give during our critical end of year giving campaign."

Jerry Yass, an active member of the Boca Friends Chapter of The Pap Corps, moved the audience of over 400 during his emotional speech at the Presidents' Meeting when he read a poem he wrote about the challenges a family endures when a loved one is battling melanoma.

"South Floridians need to be better educated about the risks of skin cancer, especially melanoma," said Linda Moses, President of The Pap Corps. "In addition to raising research funds, we hope this end of year giving campaign will raise awareness about prevention, the need for regular skin cancer screenings and the tremendous work doctors at Sylvester are doing to advance new treatments."

During the past 30 years melanoma rates have been on the rise. In 2018, it is estimated that 91,270 people will be diagnosed with melanoma, and that 9,320 will die from this form of skin cancer. Early detection and advanced treatments are critical to increasing survival rates. Sylvester offers a world-class melanoma surveillance and detection clinic, immunotherapy clinical trials, advanced expertise in immunohistochemistry and tumor markers. In addition, Sylvester is one of the few institutions to offer reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) which differentiates melanoma from less serious skin lesions.

Dr. Kevin Berkowitz, a generous supporter of The Pap Corps, established the first end of year matching campaign in 2014 and it now continues in his memory.

"Each year, we have focused our attention on a specific cancer for end of year giving," said Beverly Berkowitz, mother of Dr. Berkowitz and Vice President of The Pap Corps. "This concerted effort has united our members and brought attention to the tremendous influence The Pap Corps has to facilitate research at Sylvester. We encourage everyone to learn more about melanoma and to make a donation towards the creation of new lifesaving treatments."

About The Pap Corps:

Since its founding in 1952, The Pap Corps has donated more than $110 million to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, including a historic $50 million pledge in 2016 dedicating The Pap Corps Campus at Sylvester in Deerfield Beach. The Pap Corps derives its name from Dr. George Papanicolaou, a pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection, who introduced the world to the revolutionary 'Pap' test. A small group of women began the organization to support his efforts, and over the decades it has grown into an organization of over 20,000 men and women, in over 50 chapters, who raise funds to support all types of cancers.
