Last year, "we explored the Chandrasekhar Limit for extremal stellar implosion as a function of degeneracy pressure using Gamma Functions in high Euclidean dimensions. A Gamma Paradigm was helpful for this work, which is still ongoing."

Gamma functions are generalizations of the factorial function. If you remember from school, for instance, 4! = 4*3*2*1 = 24.

Drink HRW Hydrogen Tablets Outperform Caffeine in Improving Brain Metabolism After Sleep Deprivation

COQUITIAM, B.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- The COVID-19 pandemic is creating unprecedented levels of sleep deprivation, which presents a significant risk to mental and physical health, says Drink HRW. Additionally, "COVID-somnia," a term coined to describe the rising prevalence of insomnia following COVID-19 infection, has begun to emerge.

Now, a new randomized, controlled cross-over pilot trial, published online, "Mondayin Food Science & Nutrition," explains that high doses of hydrogen water (HRW) are more effective than caffeine in positively impacting brain metabolism for sleep-deprived men and women. Importantly, the study is replicative in nature, after earlier research demonstrated that hydrogen water and caffeine were equivalent overall in raising attention in sleep-deprived individuals yet had an impact on different domains of alertness: Hydrogen improves orienting to sensory stimulation, while caffeine alters awareness and executive attention that refers to the ability to regulate responses in conflict situations.

The randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over pilot trial compared the acute effects of single-dose HRW, caffeine, or HRW and caffeine combined against a placebo beverage on parameters of attention and brain metabolism following sleep deprivation. HRW displayed a more robust effect on brain metabolism as compared to caffeine, leading to higher choline-to-creatine ratio levels in the frontal and paracentral brain as measured via MRI brain scans.

Additionally, HRW was superior to caffeine and the placebo in reducing the number of errors in the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT) and trail making test in the sleep-deprived individuals. HRW displayed no side effects and, therefore, might be advanced as a safe and effective alternative to caffeine to address some of the effects of sleep deprivation, with more studies on the subject highly warranted.

The trail making test is a neuropsychological test of visual attention and task switching, while the SDMT detects cognitive impairment. Brain metabolism was evaluated with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, a non-invasive gold-standard method to assess changes in creatine, choline, and N-acetylasparate across the brain.

Sergej Ostojic, M.D., PH.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad, a senior author of the Food Science & Nutrition study said, "This was another study by our group that confirmed possible nootropic effects of hydrogen-rich water in sleep-deprived men and women; these effects appear to be accompanied by notable changes in brain metabolism, with frontal brain specifically targeted by HRW. We used here robust methodology but still have to learn how HRW affects brain functioning at the cellular and subcellular level."

Oil and Gas Companies to Solve Climate Change – Develop Global Enhanced Geothermal Energy

YAP, Micronesia /ScoopCloud/ -- How can oil and gas companies lead in the fight against climate change? That is a question whose answer could very well solve the climate crisis rapidly. A new research project hosted by the Center for Open Science's online collaboration platform explores one option: pay them generously to drill for geothermal energy, and let their profits transform the entire global economy. That is the focus of Dr. Daniel Helman, a multidisciplinary researcher on the small island of Yap in Micronesia, who initiated the work this week.

According to an MIT study published more than a decade ago, there are large amounts of usable geothermal energy located all over the world, in every country. It is enough energy to power civilization for several millennia to come.

Called "enhanced geothermal" because it involves adding to the drilling process to fracture the surrounding rock, the oil and gas industries can do the work to ramp up this new geothermal energy to fuel the global economy. It could feasibly end reliance on fossil fuels.

"The timing and scale of climate change mitigation and adaptation are important," writes Helman about his motivation. The idea is to use the profit motive to encourage the oil and gas sector to come to the table, and provide a carrot for developing nations to make the switch. That could end the deadlock in the official climate negotiations as well.

"Providing viable pathways for oil and gas companies to cease production of fossil fuels and transition to developing geothermal energy is a novel and useful avenue for research," writes Helman about the work.

This solution doesn't come cheap. Adoption still depends on developed countries like the United States, the UK, and members of the European Union to fund the effort. And negotiations over how much geothermal energy to develop in each country are bound to be contentious, but could easily be based on population or on known fossil fuel reserves.

Brazilian Flat Track League organizes online race for 2020

SOROCABA, SP, Brazil /ScoopCloud/ -- It's not a secret that Covid-19 had 2020 pretty much canceled all over, affecting some of the major events in the USA and abroad, but has also brought people together and fired up new ways for connecting and exchanging ideas, says the Brazilian Flat Track League.

In Brazil, the two biggest custom motorcycle shows - the BMS (Brasil Motorcycle Show) and the Lucky Friends Rodeo - had to be canceled, and with it, the races for the recently created Brazilian Flat Track League. Or, so we thought.

In an effort to not let the sport lose momentum, the Brazilian Flat Track League, the organizers from BMS, and Lucky Friends Rodeo got together to keep the competition going and fire up the teams and racers with an online event that promises to bring the excitement of the race to the audience's screens: the "On Track."

On November 1, 2020, at 1 p.m. (ET/EST), flat track fans worldwide will be able to tune in online and watch "On Track," the first Brazilian flat track race event to be offered online. Viewers will get a taste of how the sport is creating roots among racers and motorcycle enthusiasts in Brazil.

"Everything changed. People are finding new ways to work, to support their favorite restaurants and bars, to be together in general. "With an online event, not only are we still making sure the sport keeps growing in Brazil, but we are also guaranteeing the safety of the fans, the racers, and all the team members."

The "On Track" organizers are following all WHO (World Health Organization) recommendations for the participants of the race: health check booths and Covid-19 tests for racers, team members, and production crew, and lots of masks. The race will happen in Sorocaba, SP - Brazil.

Flat Track in Brazil

Flat track races are relatively new in Brazil. The category started to gain popular attention in 2016, at the Lucky Friends Rodeo event, and then with the BMS Motorcycle. With more of a roots appeal and an underground vibe, it quickly gathered momentum among the motorcycle community and the custom culture fans.

In 2019, it became an official race class in the country with the creation of the Brazilian Flat Track League and its first season of official competitions. The League has not only pushed the popularity further, with more media coverage, sponsors, sanctioned events but also gave flat track racing legitimacy in Brazil.

By the beginning of 2020, flat track season in Brazil was shaping up to be the greatest yet, starting in March when a group of nine racers and 12 people from Brazil came to the US for the weekend of FlatOutFriday and Mama Tried, in Milwaukee - Wisconsin.

"Even though the event didn't happen as expected, the time our group had in Milwaukee was crucial for Brazilian flat track. It allowed us to connect even more with other teams and with industry players. We did the best we could under the circumstances at the time, and in the end, we came back to Brazil with a lot accomplished," says Chrys Miranda, Brazilian racer and one of the founding members of the Brazilian Flat Track League.

One of the most significant announcements once "OnTrack" was confirmed, was the addition of the new Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 Flat Track class to the race; besides the traditional H-D Sportster and the H-D Antique hardtail classes.

The collaboration between BMS and Lucky Friends Rodeo isn't new. Combining lifestyle, custom culture, attractions like the only Wall of Death in South America, music, art, bike building exhibits, and, of course, races, both events bring together over 20 thousand fans.

Treating Schizophrenia with Individualized Care

YAP, Micronesia /ScoopCloud/ -- Schizophrenia may find a cure in individualized treatment. So says a new article in the science journal Holistic Nursing Practice. According to Dr. Daniel Helman, a researcher on the small island of Yap in Micronesia, long-term recovery is often possible, but appropriate studies are not being done.

Helman teaches at the College of Micronesia-FSM, in their division of education. He recently assessed the evidence-based literature related to schizophrenia. While there are promising avenues related to diet, exercise, and social roles that have some anecdotal support, treatment remains difficult because large, randomized trials are not being carried out.

"[P]sychiatric medications include major health risks from effects that appear during long-term adherence," Helman writes, while many other non-medical treatments remain promising, awaiting further study. None of the existing studies of nonmedical treatment ideas are large enough to be conclusive. "For example, having a [coach or personal trainer] help with 20 hours of exercise per week, the evidence base needs to be more complete so that funding for supports such as this can be instituted."

One rarely sees people suffering from the major symptoms of schizophrenia who have such an intensive exercise routine, according to Helman, so a path for future studies is likely to be useful.

Moreover, dietary interventions which could target autoimmune features, or vitamin or mineral deficiencies, or abnormal lipid metabolism, or gluten sensitivity await further study, and in the meantime long-term outcomes for those suffering from schizophrenia are not as good as they might be.

Helman has published several articles related to alternative and complementary treatments, but resistance, according to him, may be based on how medical practitioners think about the disease. Medications to mask the symptoms may be less effective in the long-term than finding a tailored solution to each patient by looking at them as an individual within a context.
