ACCT Philly Hires New Executive Director and Announces Additional Updates at the Shelter

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT Philly) Board of Directors today announced Aurora Velazquez as the new Executive Director of the City's animal shelter. Velazquez will begin her new role on November 4, 2019.

Velazquez comes from the Animal Care Centers of NYC, most recently serving as the organization's Chief Operating Officer. Throughout her tenure, she spearheaded the organization's focus on surrender prevention and community-oriented services. She also played a key role in developing and driving programs which resulted in a 25 percent reduction in intake of cats and dogs since 2014 and huge strides in lifesaving, achieving a placement rate of 92.5 percent in 2018-ACC of NYC's highest ever.

Prior to joining the ACC of NYC in 2011, Velazquez mentored agencies around the country on the operational aspects of establishing high quality, high volume spay/neuter clinics, including staff management, policy development and metrics analysis. She brings more than 15 years of experience in animal sheltering operations including management, operational and leadership expertise.

"ACCT has faced significant challenges for many years. With an intake of more than 18,000 animals annually, a tight budget and aging building, finding the right leader to take ACCT to the next level was a daunting task," said Marsha Perelman, chair of the Search Committee and a member of ACCT's Board of Directors since late 2018. "There are many improvements that are planned for or in progress at ACCT, and I'm thrilled that someone with Aurora's experience and leadership skills will oversee the implementation of them. Having an executive director with Aurora's knowledge and experience is a huge win for the animals, for the organization and for the city."

The organization also announced earlier today the successful completion of a two-day intensive training by national shelter medicine experts aimed at facilitating the implementation of new procedures that will improve shelter operations, reduce the length of stay for its animals, and ensure that animals in its care receive top-level care and compassion. In addition, ACCT recently broke ground on the construction of a new welcome center, funded by a generous grant from the Petco Foundation.

This comes on the heels of the news that the City's Vector Services, currently sharing the West Hunting Park facility, will be relocated and ACCT will be able to utilize an additional 9,000 square feet in the facility in late winter. As part of ongoing improvement, the organization will also replace its outdated kennels and the drainage system in early 2020.

As the Executive Director of ACCT Philly, Velazquez will oversee these improvements to the city's only open admission shelter and will work with life-saving, medical and adoptions staff and community partners to continue to strengthen the organization and help Philadelphia's homeless pets.

2019 Service Dog Hero of the Year Awarded to Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Alice

Guardian Angels Medical Service Dog Alice completed nearly 2 years of unparalleled custom training to prepare for a life partnering with and assisting Antonio.

Antonio's mom Tara says: "Alice is a hero in our eyes because without her, Antonio would not be able to do the simple things in life we take for granted, like going to school, the store, or even just walking outside. She has never once failed in alerting and has saved Antonio's life many times. Alice has given Antonio a chance at a new normal life he did not have without her. The life that was ripped away for no reason. She has NEVER let him down. If that is not a hero, I don't know what is."

Now that Guardian Angels, Alice has claimed the top spot in the Service Dog Category, in October, Antonio and Alice will head to California, to take part in the LIVE 2019 Hero Dog Awards, being broadcast on the Hallmark Channel, to compete with the 6 other category winners for the title of "Hero Dog of the Year."

The construction of the new GAMSD Pittsburgh Regional Campus will be a 12 to 18-month project that will have a positive impact on the local and state economy. On average, 75 to 100 workers will be employed during the planning and construction stages. They will include architects, engineers, plumbers, electricians, equipment operators, landscape professionals, roofers and a variety of other skilled trades. This 102-acre site that was once strip-mined, will be restored to its full natural beauty.

We have contracted RBVetCo, a disabled veteran-owned business, with a high-quality reputation to build our new facility. Once fully operational, we will have about twenty full-time staff members from the surrounding areas employed at the Pittsburgh Regional Campus. The number of jobs on-site is not significant in quantity, but meaningful in the purpose and role they play in raising, training and donating our highly skilled dogs to those in need.

Our campus will be one of the most important new establishments in the Pittsburgh area. We have a proven track record of positively changing and saving lives through our holistic approach to mitigating the challenges of permanent disabilities. With the help of our specially trained dogs, our disabled recipients begin to integrate back into their family circles, and become productive members of their communities again, even breaking the cycle of inter-generational PTSD in children. Once paired with one of our service dogs, we have countless teams that have enrolled in, or returned to college, completed degrees, become gainfully employed, started businesses, or simply left behind years of self-isolation and begun to travel.

This campus will touch the lives of countless individuals, creating both social & economic impacts. Once a recipient is paired, they begin their "New Normal". We estimate that in a family of four, each dog has the potential to positively impact the lives of 4,380 people in their community each year.

Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs is honored to serve our nation's Veterans, first-responders and disabled population. With more than 2.2 million veterans facing permanent disabilities, first-responder PTSD rates at record levels and 13% of the general population burdened with a permanent disability, this new campus will allow us to better serve those in need. In fact, although the rate of suicide in our nation's veteran population is a staggering 20-22 per day, once paired with a Guardian Angels Medical Service Dog, the rate of suicide to date in our teams is Zero. Lesser known, is that the rate of divorce in combat veteran families can be 90% higher than the national average, but once paired with one of our service dogs, the rate of divorce falls to less than 1%.

UDS Service Dogs Receives Accreditation by Assistance Dogs International

ATI Innovates for the New York Aquarium with a One-of-a-Kind Shark Crane

MENTOR, Ohio /ScoopCloud/ -- Have you ever visited an aquarium and wondered how the animals found their way in there? Engineers at Air Technical Industries (ATI) learned first-hand by designing a creative solution for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in New York City: the first continuous, double-rail, serpentine crane system of its kind.

ATI thrives on customized designs, with a 50-year history built on tackling the projects that others have called "impossible." They pride themselves on their "Challenge Request" form on their website, which was how WCS found them.

WCS needed a magical system of continuous motion to gently move sharks weighing up to 600 pounds from one pool to another, as well as from outdoors to inside the pools in the building without compromising the sensitive indoor environment.

In addition to the unique requirements of the space, the business of moving sharks called for very special adjustments. The motion of the crane had to be smooth to keep the animals calm, not jerky or loud-like traditional models. The trolley needed to move at a continuous, but slow pace so the caretakers could walk alongside the moving sharks. The hoist had to lower carefully and smoothly into the pools without splashing down and the materials used could not interfere with the pH of the water or oxygen levels.

Due to the staggered pools, the path of the track had to pass over each pool in an offset formation, as well as miss the gates located between pools.

ATI's solution arrived as an S-shaped double-girder bridge crane track with a zero-headroom hoist and trolley system. The hoist was built directly into the trolley, saving headspace with only the hook hanging below.

Due to the sensitive nature of the environment, special considerations were necessary to prevent contamination of the aquarium pools including: a special food-grade epoxy coating, wash-down motor, and stainless steel lifting chain and hook, as well as non-toxic and environmentally friendly lubricants.

"The trolley travel was probably the biggest challenge in the whole project," explained Vida Novak, Lead Engineer at ATI. "After making several adjustments to the trolley, we converted it to 'four-wheel drive,' enabling all the rollers to navigate the curves in the track smoothly and effortlessly."

The months of creative collaboration resulted in the first ever double-girder, ceiling mounted, serpentine crane system that perfectly fit the needs of the aquarium.

It was time for the first live shark to go for a test ride on the Shark Crane. Search, "How Do You Move a Shark" for the New York Times May 16, 2018 article. It worked! People and sharks alike sighed in relief. The Shark Crane was perfectly designed for its unique space.

The Shark Crane is used regularly at the New York Aquarium. Customizing the Shark Crane for such a specific environment was certainly an enormous challenge, but the engineers at ATI know that anything is possible!

Parkland School Survivor and Guardian Angels Medical Service Dog Recipient to return to first day of school with Service Dog Escort

However, {Service Dog} Spree instantly put the smile back on her face, the ability to sleep soundly, and to know she's never alone. On a recent visit and tour of Guardian Angels, the Dunlap's saw first-hand the life-saving work being done in training predominantly German Shepherds to become individually-trained medical service dogs.

Al and Judith knew immediately that they wanted to be a part of this work inquiring, "How many dogs can be trained with this gift?" It takes upwards of two (2) years to train a fully functioning service dog at a cost of approximately $22,000. This is all accomplished at no cost to the veteran who is paired with his/her dog for life.

The Community Foundation is honored to partner with Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs in creating a pass-through fund for matching gifts for their year-end campaign to not only raise funds for training but to launch their campaign to expand to a new state of the art facility on 60+ acres in Levy County.

City of La Mesa offers Official Proclamation in Support of Ferret Legalization for California

LA MESA, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Mayor Mark Arapostathis and all members of the La Mesa City Council issued a proclamation on November 9 urging the California State Legislature to pass ferret legalization legislation, non-profit Legalize Ferrets announced today.

The original request was for La Mesa to declare itself a ferret sanctuary city. The idea drew support, but many people objected to the term "sanctuary." The request was made to declare La Mesa a "ferret friendly city."

Ferret owners were aided at first by city councilwoman Kristine Alessio who has had experience with Savannah cat legalization issues and knew what ferret owners are facing in a hostile Fish and Game Commission and apathetic California legislature.

"We were also aided by city councilman Bill Baber who sympathized with us for facing another useless and outdated law backed up by an out of touch state agency," said Pat Wright of Legalize Ferrets.

Mayor Mark Arapostathis was an outstanding ally of the ferrets and recommended a proclamation.

Wright added, "We are also grateful to City Councilmen Guy McWhiter and Colin Parent who agreed with the absurdity and cruelty of California's anti-ferret law and signed on to the proclamation."

California ferret lovers continue to be rejected or ignored by California legislators but are achieving support from cities around California. Culver City has already put the ferret issue on their city council agenda and ferret lovers are next set to ask the Encinitas city council.

Now that we have this proclamation we are set to ask cities around California to adopt the ferret friendly resolution.

MostFit to Hold 2017 ‘Pushups for Puppies’ Fitness Fundraiser for Southern California Animal Rescue Organization

All of the proceeds - one hundred percent - from "Pushups for Puppies" will benefit START to support the rescue and transport of dogs from high euthanasia shelters in Southern California to safe havens in the Pacific Northwest, where they are re-homed.

This year, MostFit will partner with our friends Marc, Younjee and The RKR Charitable Fund ("RKR") to fund an entire transport of animals on START's recently renovated transport vehicle, affectionately nicknamed The Beast. The Beast can transport approximately 90-100 animals at a time and the cost to save the life of each animal is approximately $65.00. RKR has agreed to match all donations made to START in connection with Pushups for Puppies up to $6,000.

"We held our first 'Pushups for Puppies' fitness fundraiser in 2012 with the goal of raising enough money to provide safe-haven for a handful of at-risk dogs," said Andrew Gavigan of MostFit. "This year, together with RKR Charitable, we have already received a commitment to fund an entire START transport in September and we are hoping to raise as much additional money as possible to support the many great things that our friends at START are doing - their efforts truly give these wonderful animals 'a new lease on life.'"

The event consists of a one-hour, moderate and family-friendly workout hosted by some of L.A.'s leading trainers and yoga instructors. Each year Pushups for Puppies gets bigger and raises more money for START - it's a fun workout and great time to support a worthy cause.

In Florida, 87 Animals Rescued in a Massive Animal Hoarding Case

FREEPORT, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Over the past week, Alaqua Animal Refuge, a no-kill animal shelter and sanctuary located in Northwest Florida, has been leading a case in Vernon, Florida where a large number of animals were left to the care of Alaqua after their owner passed away.

The woman, a breeder of Great Pyrenees, once bred award winning dogs but over the past 10 years her physical health had deteriorated to the point that she was confined to a wheelchair. The dogs began a downward spiral of their physical condition, and the elaborate yards built to hold them no longer did. Uncontrolled breeding and lack of care for the dogs had been going on for years and the scene was deplorable.

Thirteen of the dogs and 10 of the cats - the critical, old, and young - were brought to Alaqua for urgent care. On Monday, the remaining 55 dogs and nine cats were rescued and it was no small feat. Alaqua Animal Refuge was joined by 12 rescue groups and organizations from across the United States to aid in this monumental and impressive rescue effort. After a week of extensive planning and coordination, it took a total of 45 people, all day, to get these massive dogs out of the house and off the property to safety.

Alaqua Founder Laurie Hood said, "I am personally grateful to the Lucky Puppy Rescue who played a key role and was instrumental in providing essential daily food, water, and care for these dogs until they all could be rescued. It was important to create a relationship with these dogs and connect with them early to reduce their stress."

After the dogs are thoroughly rehabilitated, they will be available for adoption through one of the rescue groups that assisted in this huge endeavor. Many of the rescue groups specialize in larger breeds, especially Great Pyrenees, and they always have many gentle giants in need of loving homes.

Rescue organizations that assisted in the relief effort included The Humane Society of the United States; The Lucky Puppy Rescue; Florida State Animal Response Coalition; Big Bend Disaster Animal Response Team; Great Pyrenees Club of America; Tri-County Animal Rescue; Big Fluffy Dog Rescue; Tallahassee Big Dog Rescue; Leon County Humane Society; Great Pyrenees Club of Western Pennsylvania Rescue; Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team; and Florida Great Pyrenees Rescue & Club.

"I was proud to offer advice and on-site assistance to Alaqua Animal Refuge in the rescue of the Great Pyrenees," said Laura Bevan, the director of the Southern Region for the Humane Society of the United States. "These dogs have been living in filth with little human contact or medical care for a long time, and it is only because of Laurie Hood's persistence that these dogs are now on their journey to become the beloved companion animals they were always meant to be."

"The team of volunteers, rescue groups, and staff that Laurie put together did a phenomenal job of humanely removing the dogs from the property and evaluating them for transport to the facilities where they will be rehabilitated. Overall, the rescue couldn't have been done any better," said Bevan.

Terri Sandlak, who is the director for the Florida Great Pyrenees Rescue, concurred that the rescue was "unbelievably organized, and is a good example of what other organizations should follow when similar situations happen again."

The presence and support of local law enforcement is always an invaluable one, especially in cases such as this. With animal hoarding and abandonment cases, among others, local officials' involvement is key. Animals' lives, both present and future, depend on it, as does future laws protecting animals against neglect, cruelty, or hoarding.

"We witnessed an amazing effort to care for these animals, who were in desperate need. As we arrived on scene, it was apparent that Alaqua Animal Refuge had a strategic plan put in place to rescue these animals in the most effective and safest way possible," said Washington County Sheriff Kevin Crews. "The dedication, skill, and knowledge that this organization has could not be more evident."

This was certainly a team effort, based on a passion and love for these majestic animals. From the first dog that was taken out of the house and walked on a leash to his transport to the last one that had to be carried out because he could barely walk-their eyes told their life stories. It filled many of the volunteers that were onsite with tears, with smiles, and with love and appreciation for the human spirit wanting to help.

Although an incredibly heartbreaking situation, including the loss of life of the dogs' owner, this massive rescue ended on a positive note, as they are getting their second chance-at life and to find a loving permanent home, again.

The rescue of these 87 animals has incurred an enormous amount of expenses, especially in medical evaluations and treatments. The daily work at Alaqua Animal Refuge, including large rescues such as this, could not be done without the support of our community and beyond.
