Pompano Beach CRA Announces a Special McNab House Presentation

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Pompano Beach residents are encouraged to attend a special presentation about the McNab House & Botanical Gardens during a virtual Pompano Beach CRA meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at 1 p.m. The presentation will introduce Randy Hollingworth, Director of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Urban Design from the award-winning, international firm Bermello, Ajamil and Partners (B&A).

Hollingworth will explore potential concepts generally found in botanical gardens based upon his extensive experience in creating outstanding public parks and open spaces.

To view the meeting please visit, https://bit.ly/35mPz30.

"Randy will be discussing a variety of space-compatible elements for potential inclusion in a botanical garden. This phase begins with a clean slate and no preconceived notions," said Nguyen Tran, Pompano Beach CRA Director. "We are excited to share the possibilities and to launch the public input workshops."

The McNab House, built in 1926, was moved from its original location on Atlantic Boulevard, when the owners sold the land for development. With the support of the Pompano Beach Historical Society, the Pompano Beach CRA saved the historic home, moving it several blocks to McNab Park, with the vision of transforming the home into a restaurant and the surrounding land into a botanical garden. The goal of the McNab House and Botanical Gardens project is to continue economic growth with the East CRA and Atlantic Boulevard corridor. Activation of the park will encourage more pedestrian activity and create a unique attraction with park elements for residents and visitors to enjoy.

"There is tremendous potential for the McNab House & Botanical Gardens to become a premiere attraction in Broward County," explained Hollingworth, who is a Partner at B&A, the Miami-based firm that is contracted to design the botanical garden. "During this presentation, we will not be focusing on specifics, instead exploring an array of visual concepts that have been successfully implemented in similarly-sized urban parks and open spaces. I join this project with no preconceived notions, just stunning possibilities. And I look forward to robust public input leading to the creation of an amenity-filled botanical garden."

The Pompano Beach CRA offered multiple public meeting opportunities during Phase 1 and is tentatively targeting November 2020 for an initial community stakeholder meeting to discuss the design process.

About the Pompano Beach CRA:

The City of Pompano Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) was created in 1989. It has two dependent districts: Northwest CRA and East CRA established by City government for the purpose of carrying out redevelopment activities that include reducing or eliminating blight, improving the economic health of an area, and encouraging public and private investments in a CRA district.

The Northwest CRA District covers an area of about 3,084 acres encompassing a large part of the western portion of the City between Atlantic Boulevard and Copans Road generally west of Dixie Highway. The Pompano Beach CRA is funded through Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The funds are collected as property values increase and a portion of that increase is captured by the Agency. TIF raises revenue for redevelopment efforts without raising taxes.

Tennessee’s 1st Democratic Nominee Blair Walsingham Announces the ‘Freedom Grant’

EIDSON, Tenn. /ScoopCloud/ -- Blair Walsingham, Democratic Congressional nominee in Tennessee's 1st District will award two "Freedom Grants," $500/month for one year to district residents. Walsingham says that her Freedom Grant, not dependent upon a vote for her, is intended to "empower individuals to move beyond survival." If elected, she will seek legislation for a Freedom Dividend, a monthly basic income of $1000 to Americans 18 and over.

Walsingham says that corporations thrive on benefits from tax dollars, and says, "It's time for taxpayers to thrive too." Walsingham cites direct cash distributions by Dolly Parton following the Gatlinburg fires, and per capita distribution in the nearby Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, as models of basic income. "In the EBCI, this practice improved quality of life and increased opportunity," says Walsingham, who interviewed Principal Chief Sneed for her podcast.

While basic income plans vary, Walsingham's plan is universal. "This dividend unites Americans with a shared benefit of citizenship," she says, pointing out that while her plan could eradicate poverty, the advantages are not just for low income households.

"Middle class Americans," adds Walsingham, "are suffering from debt and healthcare bills." A common rationale for basic income is automation in the workplace, which the McKinsey Global Institute says may eliminate 73 million jobs by 2030.

Interest in basic income has grown during COVID-19 after Congress passed a round of stimulus checks. A trial UBI in Stockton, Calif., showed that recipients increased spending on food by 12% from the same time last year.

More money in the hands of Americans means more spending. Walsingham says we can "replace the cycle of poverty with a cycle of prosperity," and that her campaign's Freedom Grant initiative is a step in that direction.

If elected, Blair Walsingham would be the first Democrat to represent Tennessee's 1st District in over a hundred years.

Seattle Company, Oscilla Power, Developing Breakthrough Approach to Recharging Underwater Vehicles

SEATTLE, Wash. /ScoopCloud/ -- Oscilla Power, Inc. is proud to announce the receipt of a $200k grant from the US DOE to further develop technology that enables autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to recharge themselves using ocean waves. In this Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) project, Oscilla Power will collaborate with Lockheed Martin, through their Rotary and Mission Systems group, to explore how this capability can be incorporated into their AUV and UUV systems.

AUVs are now seeing significant use across a wide range of marine applications and the AUV market is projected to grow rapidly at a compound annual growth rate of 20.8% to over $1.6 Billion by 2025. However, the capability of an AUV is limited by its battery capacity. An NREL report noted that there were a number of key advantages in increasing the amount of power available, particularly the ability for longer duration missions. Oscilla's technology offers the ability for the vehicle to recharge its batteries using only the environment, potentially enabling unlimited range and duration.

According to Balky Nair, President of Oscilla Power, "The development of a capability that can be integrated into commercial AUVs to provide enough power to recharge the on-board batteries could be potentially game-changing for ocean science and military operations."

Solar panels have been used previously for AUV recharging, however, this approach suffered from very low power and constrained operations to daytime only. A significant advantage of using waves for this purpose is that ocean waves are more than 100 times more energy dense than solar, allowing for much higher power to be produced. AUV's spend the majority of their time working at depth so higher power is advantageous to minimize surfacing and recharging time.

Oscilla expect to demonstrate a fully working laboratory prototype early next year. If successful, Oscilla plans to work with Lockheed Martin to progress to a full ocean demonstration shortly afterwards, with the ultimate objective of transitioning the technology to commercial and military platforms.

About Oscilla Power, Inc.:

Oscilla Power, Inc. is focused on developing advanced technology to extract energy from ocean waves.

Oz Sultan Announces Campaign for New York’s 30th District State Senate Seat

HARLEM, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- District Leader Oz Sultan announced today that he is the reformed Republican candidate for New York's 30th District for State Senate.

Sultan, a Harlem resident, has gone from a Harlem Resident to a District Leader for the 70th Assembly. In that time, he's worked with the 5 Borough Homelessness Coalition to stop blockbusting, push legislation in Albany, bring job opportunities and giving back.

"It's time to put politics aside and do what's right for Harlem. We need Community Leaders that build - and need to continue Ruby Wright's Mission. That's why I'm running for New York's State Senate 30th District, Harlem," stated Oz Sultan.

"Those of us across Harlem deserve a true leader, who is not afraid to ask questions, engage the community, demand the truth, and who will always put the needs of the district and its people before self-interest. The people deserve an independent-minded representative who is willing to fight for a stronger health care system, strategic investments in infrastructure, and getting corporate special interest money out of our politics. Most of all, we need someone in Albany who will lookout for more than just themselves."

Working in his community Sultan has been involved in Harlem for years and seen first-hand how much has been lost with the passing of leaders like Brother Akil Rose and Sister Rubye Wright. Sultan's background is 20 years in Corporate America and Startups, with a decade working with Non-profit Organizations and Interfaith groups.

"Post COVID, we are going to need the leader that has shown they are willing to first respond, as well as able to get work done in Albany. We will have bi-partisanship and cooperation."

RMA Presents Long-term Strategic Finance Action Plan for North Miami Beach

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- RMA (www.RMA.us.com) presented their combined 5-Year Strategic Finance Plan and Action Plan for the City of North Miami Beach to the CRA Board on Thursday, June 25. The award-winning consulting firm developed a clear and concise roadmap to prioritize and guide redevelopment in the CRA area. This plan was unanimously approved by the Board.

RMA's presentation detailed long-term development projects within the CRA District and highlighted targeted redevelopment zones for investment, making it easier to allocate resources and implement distinctive branding and marketing campaigns.

A video of the meeting can be viewed at http://www.citynmb.com.

"RMA has done a tremendous job in developing this Actionable Finance Plan," said Esmond Scott, City Manager who also serves as the CRA Executive Director. "Their team focused on the best strategies for revitalizing underutilized areas and tapping into each district's unique potential. Beyond a list of goals, this plan provides a strategic path to success.

Key recommendations in the Plan include:
1. Transformation of the Snake Creek Canal area, capitalizing on its potential to become a regional waterfront amenity.
2. Create a lively urban "main street" along Hanford Blvd/164, which could feature ground floor restaurants, bars, cafes, offices and artists' studios.
3. Expand the current mural program, and more aggressively identify locations for murals and public art to enhance cultural community pride and diversity.
4. Encourage the City to continue assisting local businesses and take advantage of the mom & pop business cluster north of the canal while adopting incentive programs specific to further the redevelopment of this area.
5. Create a bold and beautiful Civic Commons atmosphere with a grand Boulevard or promenade in the area which currently predominantly features governmental institutions, a theater, offices and schools.
6. Attract private investment to transform underutilized parcels and industrial space into a future industrial arts area with maker's spaces and repurposed co-working spaces.
7. Develop a complete streets initiative along 163rd Corridor to create an area that invites residents to stroll the neighborhood.

"These are just a few of the recommendations featured in the plan that RMA presented to the Board," said Sharon McCormick, RMA's Director of Business Attraction & Marketing. "We are honored to be part of the City's team in revitalizing this dynamic community, and we look forward to implementing the next steps."

RMA has partnered with the City on multiple initiatives over the course of the last several years including economic development and incentive strategies, planning & zoning, and marketing & branding. One of RMA's most remarkable achievements for North Miami Beach was the Land Use and Zoning Amendments, which led to the City's tax base increasing by 17% in one year city-wide and by 46% in the CRA District. RMA also developed the recent North Miami Beach Recovery and Resilience Plan, which focused on the best strategies for moving forward economically from the COVID-19 crisis.

About RMA:

Dogs Trapped in Hot Cars – The Sacramento SPCA is Helping Keep Pets Safe

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- As the Sacramento region heads into an extremely hot week, one local animal welfare organization is taking action to help animals left in hot cars. The Sacramento SPCA is providing thermometers to all animal control officers in Sacramento County in an effort to prevent animals from suffering and dying in hot cars and to hold those who caused this suffering accountable.

Each year police and animals control officers in our community respond to hundreds of calls about animals - most often dogs - left in hot cars. These are reported by Good Samaritans who hear the animals crying for help or, in the worst cases, notice an animal that has passed out or stopped breathing. California law now allows these Good Samaritans to break into the vehicle under certain circumstances.

"We need the community to know that there are consequences to leaving an animal in a car - no matter the reason," said Kenn Altine, CEO of the Sacramento SPCA. "The consequences for the animal are horrific," he said, "but too often the person is not held accountable."

Altine said the thermometers, which are certified tested and calibrated, will allow the animal control officers to accurately capture the ambient air temperature in the vehicle as part of their evidence collection.

"By having a reliable and accurate recording of the temperature using a certified thermometer, we can better hold the people accountable for their actions," said Sacramento County DDA Hilary Bagley-Franzoia. The Sacramento County District Attorney handles cases of animals left in cars.

They've already had several cases this year, including an animal who was left in a car where the temperature reached 130 degrees, causing the animal to have seizures, neuropathy and to bleed through its skin and paws. Forty-five minutes after the animal was freed from the car, its internal temperature was still 108 degrees (normal body temperature for dogs and cats is 101 to 102.5 degrees).

About the Sacramento SPCA:

Founded in 1892, the Sacramento SPCA has been providing homeless animals with individual comfort, shelter, and love for more than 128 years. They provide compassionate medical care to tens of thousands of animals annually and offer a variety of programs and services designed to keep people and pets together for life.

Mental Health Awareness License Plate Winning Design

LAFAYETTE, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- BeingwellCA, a California 501(c)(3), submitted the initial design for the Mental Health Awareness License Plate to California Department of Education for DMV review.

The winning design was selected after a statewide contest held for high school students. Winning artist Anshuree Banerjee took her passion for art to create meaningful imagery for the new Mental Health California license plate.

"I wanted a design that clearly included California as part of the solution and was positive about mental health," said Anshuree, a student at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, California.

"This license plate has the potential of raising millions of dollars for student mental health which are so desperately needed in the post Covid-19 school environment. And it does it without raising taxes," said Graham Wiseman, CEO of BeingwellCA.

"Wellness Centers with Caring Adults have proven to be a key in early intervention. A 12-year University of Michigan study reported a reduction of youth deaths by 660%! We need these in all schools." (JAMA Psychiatry, Feb, 2019)

California Senator Steven Glazer (7th District) is the author of SB1223 (4COLIN) that authorizes the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue a specialized license plate for Mental Health Awareness. Funds raised by the Mental Health License Plate will go to the California Department of Education for Mental Health Wellness Centers in California Schools. Due to Covid-19, this bill will carry over to 2021.

About BeingwellCA:

Graham & Caroline Wiseman founded BeingwellCA after the tragic loss of their son to suicide at age 15. With Gail Miller, they are now a leading voice to address the alarming rates of anxiety, depression and suicide ideation in our state. Some districts report depression rates amongst female juniors of 50% with serious suicide ideation of 20% in past year (CalSCHLS, 2018).

Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 10-24 (2017 CDC WISQARS).

BeingwellCA's mission is to reduce anxiety, depression and suicide ideation in our youth. We do this by providing schools, parents, students and communities with tool kits and evidence-based strategies for Wellness Centers to provide mental health immediate support.

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and MAGLITE Partner with Pedestrian Safety Institute to Promote National Traffic Safety Awareness Month

ONTARIO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and Mag Instrument, U.S. Manufacturer of the iconic MAGLITE(R) flashlight, have partnered with the Pedestrian Safety Institute (PSI) to drive awareness of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrian and traffic fatalities in the Month of July.

July has been designated National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month because of the spike in accidents and fatalities during that time of year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes in 2017, now that number is even higher.

6,283 pedestrians were killed in 2018, an increase of 3.4 percent from the previous year and the highest number in 30 years. A research paper by noted economist and author Jay Prag of the Drucker School finds that pedestrian injuries and deaths from accidents cost the United States economy more than $60 billion in 2018 alone. The vast majority of accidents and the highest percentage of deaths (up to 75% according to some studies) occurred at night with poor visibility and distracted driving being major contributing factors.

"Pedestrian deaths exceed those by drowning and motorcycle accidents; exceed deaths by food borne illness in the US; and exceed deaths by tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough combined. They even exceed the combined deaths in home fires, boating accidents, and commercial airline accidents each year. If pedestrian deaths were a disease, drug companies would be searching for a cure," said study author Jay Prag.

Roadway hazards abound for the first responder. Traffic volume and speed, distracted drivers and the additional distraction caused by a roadway incident leave firefighters and others working the scene highly vulnerable. As of June 8, 2020, 20 first responders have been struck and killed while working vehicle incidents this year. Dozens more have been injured, with an even higher number of near misses predicted to be occurring daily.

"The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation joins with other agencies in calling for all drivers to remain attentive, slow down when approaching an incident on the roadway and safely move over to give first responders the best opportunity to do their work and return home to their families," said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF.

"Maglite is committed to safety and security and make our products with those reasons in mind. We urge people to stay safe and be particularly vigilant around this deadly time of year and of course - carry some form of illumination at night," said Tony Maglica, Founder and CEO Mag Instrument, Inc. "Our goal is to reduce fatalities and injuries that occur on our roads and highways in vehicle traffic accidents, especially among pedestrians, who are far likelier to be fatally struck by vehicles at night than in the daytime."

The mission of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum is to honor the fallen, tell the story of American law Enforcement, and make it safer for those who serve. Traffic safety for our officers is closely tied to pedestrian safety, and it is a priority to bring awareness of the topic to the nation. We are honored to be a partner in National Traffic Safety Awareness Month," said Marcia Ferranto, CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

NFFF, NLEOMF, Maglite and PSI will be using various social media and other communication channels to promote National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month in July.

MAGLITE(R) is a founding sponsor of The Pedestrian Safety Institute and sponsored the research by Prag. The full research paper is available at the website: https://www.pedestriansafetyinstitute.com/.

Walsingham and Yang Team up to Promote Basic Income in Tennessee

EIDSON, Tenn. /ScoopCloud/ -- Blair Walsingham, candidate for US Congress TN District 1, announced today an endorsement by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang and his non-profit, Humanity Forward. Yang's campaign focused on Human Capitalism and Universal Basic Income, inspiring a movement to end partisan politics and seek solutions driven by data.

"Blair volunteered for my campaign and is now running for Congress," says Yang. "She is well-positioned to win her primary." He adds, "Blair is just the kind of person we need in Washington, a true fighter for the people who doesn't owe the big companies a thing."

Walsingham's platform leads with Universal Basic Income which she says will root out poverty and offer the opportunity for Americans to invest in themselves through education and entrepreneurship. COVID-19 demonstrated how many Americans were ill-equipped to confront the challenges of job loss and unforeseen medical expenses. Walsingham and Yang contend that basic income will ensure life-long financial stability and opportunity. "Passing basic income is a critical safety measure. It's planning ahead for the rainy days you know will come," Walsingham explains.

In his endorsement Yang states, "Blair is fighting passionately for rural Americans. There is a need for medical services, internet access, and educational opportunities in her community. People in Tennessee relate to Blair because she just wants better for families."

Walsingham says, "Despite living in the richest country in the world, millions of Americans still can't cover their basic needs." She emphasizes that basic income is not just an economic policy, but also a social policy. She says, "where Universal Basic Income programs have been tried, they have been shown to improve mental health, reduce crime and abortion rates, all while encouraging economic activity. The Eastern Band of Cherokee has been providing basic income from the revenue of its casino since 1996. During this time, the rate of employment has remained steady, and a long-term study indicated a reduction in both crime and suicide rates."

Yang's campaign attracted a large number of libertarian and conservative supporters who see basic income as a tool to reduce bureaucracy and provide greater individual freedom. Advocates contend that federal assistance has been distributed to every industry across the board, but rarely has it gone to where it's needed the most -- into the hands of hard working Americans.

The Tennessee Democratic Primary will take place on August 6.

COVID-19 Response Shines Light on Need for Civil Liberty Protections: California Organization Drafts Bill to Fix Health and Safety Code

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- In an effort to protect the right to body autonomy, California Health Coalition Advocacy (CHCA) has drafted legislation that would protect the right to refuse a long list of medical and non-medical interventions issued by the California Department of Public Health and Governor Newsom.

The organization points out that in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an onslaught of Governor's orders as well as an unusually high number of intrusive County Health Department ordinances. The breadth of powers granted, especially to unelected officials in county health offices, has surprised legislators and county supervisors.

Local Health Officers, who are not elected by their county constituents, have taken broad control of the response to this pandemic and created ordinances that come dangerously close to, if not outright, violating the right of Californians to decide how they manage their personal health choices.

"The right to refuse is based on fundamental constitutional principles. The sovereign nature of people necessitates that they be free and independent in all aspects of their life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness without interference from governmental power structures, and these inalienable rights need perpetual protection," said Diane Miller, who drafted the bill's language and who is also an attorney and Legal and Public Policy Director of National Health Freedom Coalition. This bill would ensure that the right to refuse stays intact.

CHCA's "Personal Rights During Infectious Outbreak and State of Emergency" bill would add Section 120137 to the health and safety code. Its main accomplishment would be to establish the right to refuse requirements and restrictions recently experienced by Californians.

The bill language stipulates the following: "... individuals retain the right to be free and independent and maintain their inalienable and fundamental rights including but not limited to the right to refuse the following activities whether for direct response or prevention: medical treatments or procedures; testing; physical or mental examination; vaccination; experimental procedures and protocols; collection of specimens; participation in tracking or tracing programs; the wearing of masks; the maintaining of measured distance from other humans and animals that is not otherwise unlawful; and the involuntary sharing of personal data or medical information."

"The power of California's Public Health Department has increased unchecked since the mid-90s. With the pandemic, the extent to which the local health officer can restrict the civil liberties of individuals has become apparent," stated Valerie Noble, president of CHCA. "They have the authority to take possession of a living body, destroy property and pets, and take any action they deem necessary, whether or not those actions are evidence-based. Furthermore, a person who refuses to comply with an order is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by fines and imprisonment. It is of utmost urgency that the rights of individuals during disease outbreaks are defined and protected."

California Health Coalition Advocacy is actively seeking a legislator to author their urgency bill.

Nuclear to Play Vital Role in Innovating Virginia’s Carbon-Free Future

ARLINGTON, Va. /ScoopCloud/ -- Innovations in nuclear energy will play a vital role in reaching Virginia's goal to be carbon-free by 2050 after Governor Ralph Northam signed legislation directing the state to work with industry to develop a strategic plan for the Commonwealth's nuclear industry. The bill, passed by the legislature in March, directs the government of the Commonwealth, through the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium Authority (VNECA), to work with industry stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan for ensuring this carbon-free energy source continues its contribution to economic development and reducing greenhouse gases.

"The nuclear industry is a vital part of the Commonwealth's economy and the Lynchburg region," said State Senator Steve Newman, patron of SB 549. "The strategic plan will drive innovation to support and grow this vital resource for jobs and energy production in Virginia. I look forward to seeing the plan take shape and be put into action in the weeks and months ahead."

Delegate Chris Hurst, patron of HB 1303, added, "It is vital to the future of our Commonwealth that we continue to explore all opportunities for carbon-free energy, including nuclear. House Bill 1303 will allow Virginia to lead on environmental responsibility while remaining a national leader in nuclear energy, by encouraging research taking place at our outstanding universities and new economic development through advanced technology and manufacturing."

The legislation directs the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, the Secretaries of Commerce & Trade and Education, the VNECA, and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership Authority to work together to develop a strategic plan for nuclear energy. The plan will spur innovation in an industry already making significant contributions to emission-free energy by providing economic development opportunity, new avenues for education and jobs, and additions to Virginia's manufacturing base.

"We are excited that the legislature and Governor recognize the contribution made by the nuclear industry," said Tom DePonty, VNECA Chairman. "Last year Governor, Northam outlined an ambitious agenda for moving Virginia to 100 percent carbon-free energy by 2050. The strategic plan will help attract innovative new businesses that will help Virginia achieve its goals while helping grow our economy."

With a focus on promoting advanced nuclear technology opportunities for innovation, the plan will drive advanced manufacturing, establishment of a collaborative research center, and creation of a university nuclear leadership program to promote fields that meet the workforce demands of Virginia's nuclear industry.

"Across the country, developments in new reactor designs and fuel technology are leading a resurgence in advanced manufacturing and clean power generation," said April Wade, Executive Director of the Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium, a group representing nuclear industry stakeholders and universities across the Commonwealth. "Congress has appropriated $1.5 billion for nuclear energy programs, including demonstration of technologies like small modular reactors. The strategic plan will enable Virginia to take advantage of opportunities like these and to demonstrate the Commonwealth's commitment to carbon-free generation, advanced manufacturing, expanded education and research opportunities, and other economic benefits."

About VNEC:

The Virginia Nuclear Energy Consortium (VNEC) established by Virginia statute in 2013 and created in 2015, seeks to facilitate, encourage and advance the nuclear industry in Virginia through collaboration among industry participants, colleges and universities and not-for-profits in areas of need and interest to its members.

Healthcare Executive SHEILA CHERFILUS-MCCORMICK, J.D. Qualifies for the August Democratic Primary against Incumbent Alcee Hastings

MIRAMAR, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, J.D., Democratic candidate for Florida's 20th Congressional District announces she has qualified for the upcoming Democratic Primary against Incumbent Alcee Hastings who is in his 3rd year of aggressive treatment for late stage pancreatic cancer. Mrs. McCormick is the CEO of Trinity Healthcare Services, a home health company with offices in Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

"We will be running a smart, grassroots campaign that puts the people's needs at the forefront," said campaign manager Willis Howard, a legend in South Florida politics and the strategic consultant instrumental in the surprise blow out win for the Andrew Gillum campaign in the 2018 August Democratic primary for Governor. The election date is August 18, 2020.

"We need a leader who will show up to work every day with the energy to fight for us in Washington. Mr. Hastings has missed key votes in Congress including the recent stimulus program which our community is desperate need of and has not been seen in the district in months. Our community is one of the hardest impacted by the Coronavirus in Florida," explained Mrs. McCormick on the need for new leadership in the district.

"Sheila McCormick is definitely the future of the Democratic Party," exclaimed Willis Howard.

The McCormick campaign has been focused for months establishing a lasting presence in the community and hosted various virtual town halls, activist briefings, and food and face mask distributions. The results of months of hard work are demonstrated after successfully outraising the incumbent in the first quarter reporting period.

"Members of the community have bombarded my campaign seeking help in applying for the Payroll Protection Program, as minority and women-owned small businesses have been largely denied relief. As a member of Congress, I will fight to ensure that federal programs are required to be equitable and focused on helping Main Street, instead of funding more Wall Street bailouts," concluded Mrs. McCormick.

RMA Offers a COVID-19 Economic Recovery Playbook for Government Leaders

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- For over a decade, RMA (www.rma.us.com) has been guiding city and county leaders through the "reinvention" process using a strategic multistep approach to help communities overcome economic obstacles. Now, as cities struggle to address the economic impacts of COVID-19, the firm has created a Recovery Playbook for municipal leaders, outlining a customizable plan to help cities recover quickly. Learn more: https://rma.us.com/recovery-playbook/

"Understandably, many city leaders are overwhelmed by the convergence of problems and the realization there is no boilerplate solution," said RMA co-founder Chris Brown. "However, there is a structured approach for developing a tailored plan which we layout in our Recovery Playbook."

RMA's Recovery Playbook will help city leaders switch modes from survival to recovery to growth with these 3 Steps:

1. Set up an Economic Development Recovery Team & Structure

2. Pinpoint Your City's Economic Opportunities & Threats

3. Create the Recovery Strategy with Specific Action Items for Your City's Needs

"Most cities are now establishing a core economic development recovery team," said RMA co-founder Kim Briesemeister. "But the team must have a designated point person and structure. Their first mission should be an immediate assessment of where the largest impacts will be within the business community that will affect the city's tax base."

Many cities will feel the full brunt of the economic downturn next year, so it is imperative to understand where major issues lie in order to establish effective measures for true economic recovery, on both short-term and long-term levels.

When implementing triage measures, Briesemeister and Brown emphasize that leaders may not want to rely on presumed immediate fixes, such as city-sponsored grants or financial programs, without first evaluating the long-term ramifications.

Cities may face major revenue shortfalls from different sectors as well, so the Playbook suggests looking at three key areas for threats and opportunities: Mainstreet, Real Estate Assets and Industry Clusters that are unique to each city.

"This assessment will pinpoint risks but will also highlight possible new solutions," she said. "For example, the loss of a large retail or industrial tenant may open business attraction possibilities for a modified grocery distribution center closer to the city center."

"Disruption always leads to new innovations," said Briesemeister, whose firm has attracted over $1 billion worth of private sector investment to their city clients, which continued even during the last recession.

The goal is to help leaders formulate a series of tailored economic initiatives to guide local businesses though the difficult times, while harnessing the assets that demonstrate the potential to become economic engines.

The Playbook also includes a Special Section that ponders three topics for cities to "self -assess," including reexamining land use codes, refocusing on the 'village mentality,' and refining the operational processes at City Hall.

Bob Olsen Announces His Democratic Candidacy for Arizona Congressional District 8

SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. /ScoopCloud/ -- Bob Olsen announced that he is running for the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Arizona's 8th Congressional district.

"I think of representing the people of Arizona in Congress as the culmination of my life's work," stated Olsen.

Olsen believes that America must resume its leadership position in combatting climate change; investing in our nation's future by fully funding education for every student; providing affordable healthcare for every citizen; and establishing a minimum wage that can support a working person with dignity.

In addition, Olsen supports strengthening and protecting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for seniors and those people with disabilities. These programs are based on the contributions of a working lifetime, and are not part of the national budget. Raiding these funds is tantamount to grand theft on a national scale.

Olsen also wants to preserve the promises made to veterans and the working people of this country, and protect the nutritional status, health and welfare of children.

"These issues are important to the men and women of Arizona and this country. My Republican opponent consistently ignores the needs of the people of Arizona and the country," Olsen says. "Every day that passes without change puts the solution further out of reach."

Olsen brings a strong blue collar perspective to the table. He urges citizens to support his campaign so they will have a Representative who truly represents the people.

Olsen dedicated his professional life to serving the public. He served in the U.S. Navy and The U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves for 32 years. He was recalled to active duty twice after 9/11.

Olsen then served as a firefighter, police officer and first responder. Olsen used his downtime while a firefighter to put himself through college and law school, and then served as an attorney for the Modest Means Lawyer Referral Program, which served low income people in civil and criminal courts.

Olsen and his wife, Linda, live in Sun City West. They have two daughters and two grandsons.

South Central Iowa Community Steps Up to Support Senior Care Center

OSCEOLA, Iowa /ScoopCloud/ -- Since the WHO announced the Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic status in early March, long-term care facilities have been on the front lines of the health and safety battle, notes the Clarke County Development Corporation (CCDC). With senior citizens being some of the most "at risk" from the virus, the need for protective gear - from essential N95 hospital-grade face-masks to personal protective equipment (PPE), like gloves and gowns - have been in high demand and access has been limited. That's where the manufacturing community in Clarke County and Osceola, Iowa stepped up.

Earlier in the week, the Clarke County Development Corporation (CCDC) started working with the staff at Southern Hills Specialty Care facility in Osceola to procure additional essential supplies to help with the safety and protection of their 89 senior residents. Asking for donations or additional support from the manufacturing industry, Bill Trickey, Executive Director of the CCDC and Destiny Boeve, Administrator for Southern Hills were able to collect a generous supply of masks as well as some other essential items.

Altec's Osceola body plant was instrumental in donations, providing 3,000 latex gloves for the facility. And SIMCO Drilling Equipment, Inc, donated a surplus of high-grade masks and gloves as soon as the call was made.

"Having been part of the Osceola and Clarke County community for decades, we simply wanted to help wherever we could," said Darren Swolley, General Manager at SIMCO. "These are the times when community means more than ever."

Other local businesses, including Cathy's Auto Body and Cactus Farms, were also quick to join in the roundup of supplies. The team at Boyt Harness donated thousands of masks from their Missouri plant to hospitals and facilities in need there.

"This is what makes my job such a pleasure," said Trickey. "When the community is in need, our business network knows how to deliver."

Southern Hills staff members, residents, family members and friends alike have joined together to help with the cause, sewing from mask templates for residents and staffers to use while other donation efforts are in the works. Boeve's own grandmother, Kathy Klein sewed 100 masks for the staff and is working on washable gowns for the program. Southern Hills staffer and CNA, Amy Allen brought her seamstress talents back in her off hours just to help with the production as well.

With the influx of masks and gloves, the need for other safety materials has become a priority. Materials for sewing additional masks as well as gowns and other PPEs are still needed to help the staff properly care for the residents.

"We couldn't be more blessed," said Boeve. "Our community really knows how to come together in a time of crisis."

Boeve went on to stress the need for basic sewing materials like needles and thread for additional masks for mending gowns. And the donation of more N95 masks, gowns, or PPEs remains on the priority list for the foreseeable future.

If you have access to the items needed for the care of the residents at Southern Hills or have items you can donate, please reach out to Destiny Boeve at Southern Hills Care Center, 444 N W View Drive, Osceola, IA 50213, phone: 641-342-6061.

North Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Joseph has been selected as a 2020 Miami Times ‘New Generation of Dreamers’

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- The Miami Times has selected North Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Joseph, Esq. to join the Class of 2020's "Next Generation of Dreamers." Joseph is being recognized for his leadership in resolving a water billing controversy affecting nearly 200,000 customers throughout Northern Miami-Dade County served by the city's water utility.

The Miami Times featured an interview with Michael Joseph in the 2020 "Next Generation of Dreamers" Special Supplement inserted inside its February 26 issue. The interview describes Commissioner Joseph's upbringing as the "Leader from humble beginnings dreams big" and his efforts to resolve a water billing controversy as his first major action after being elected to the North Miami Beach city commission in November 2018.

The water billing controversy burdened fixed-income households served by the city's water utility with increased water bills and a new monthly pay schedule from the previous quarterly schedule. The water bills were often three or four times higher than before. Water customers were furious. The neighboring city of Miami Gardens sued the city citing unfair practices.

As The Miami Times reports, "He heard the pleas of seniors who couldn't afford their water bills and acted."

Commissioner Joseph explained to The Miami Times that "On Sept. 17, my proposal to restore quarterly billing by NMB Water was approved and adopted."

"This was exciting news and means water bills will effectively decrease throughout the year. The vote lifted a burden for nearly 200,000 customers in Miami Gardens, Aventura, Sunny Isles, and throughout North-Dade whose bills were three or four times that amount," concluded Commissioner Joseph.

CONCRETE JUNGLE NO MORE – Catalyst Experiential to Bring Green Space Along Pennsauken, NJ Corridor

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. /ScoopCloud/ — The Township of Pennsauken, New Jersey, in public private partnership with Catalyst Experiential, will bring some much needed green space back to the heavily commercial Pennsauken corridor in the form of two Community Landmarks, a Clocktower on Route 38 and a Monument on Marlton Pike. More than 70% of the land along Route 38 and 70 is zoned commercial, and commercial land can be 85% “impervious” – meaning concrete and asphalt as opposed to landscaping and greenery.

In keeping with that zoning, the actual percentage of impervious surfaces on the commercial land is. . . 85%. Further, businesses maximize the amount of impervious surface for buildings, parking lots, sidewalks, and other things that enable their business to flourish or allow people to get to them.

Catalyst Experiential is working with Pennsauken to introduce nature along two parcels. The first, a Clocktower on Route 38, will replace a car stereo installation shop that occupies an unsightly 1960s single-story purple building. The site, which is almost entirely covered in concrete, will be demolished, and the property will be converted into a vibrant green space with an extensive water feature. The current cold, uninviting concrete building will be transformed into an enticing Clocktower constructed of living plants, an extensive water feature, township identification, and, of course, a clock.

The second is a Monument on Marlton Pike that will replace a closed rug store. It will include a pond as well as township identification.

Amanda Toton, VP of Development for Catalyst Experiential, noted, “The projects both uniquely identify Pennsauken Township, welcome visitors, and revitalize two underutilized parcels in the community.”

The structures each feature high quality digital displays that, in addition to advertising, will be used by the Township as a communication platform that enables quick information-sharing with local residents about community events and other important messages, free of charge.

“Both of these sites have been on our wish list to revitalize,” said, Betsy McBride, former Mayor and a member of the Pennsauken Township Committee. “We are very excited to not only revitalize them, but to transform them into much needed green space in our community.”

The structures fall in line with the Pennsauken Green Team initiative that consists of residents and municipal employees who have a strong interest in the environment and who work towards making Pennsauken Township more sustainable.

The Township participates in Community Visioning, by which residents envision the future they want through meaningful public participation. Stakeholders imagine where they would like the community to be in 10 or 20 years. This shared vision creates the basis for developing goals and completing actions that move the municipality toward a more ideal, sustainable community. This vision is moving towards more green space in the area, with the transformation of two underutilized concrete spaces.

More on Catalyst Experiential

Catalyst Experiential is redefining the physical form of communication by integrating visual communication technology with municipal landmarks, public safety facilities, and community gathering places. Imagine dog parks, pedestrian bridges, art centers, or fire stations that serve the public while enabling the local government, schools, charities, and businesses to speak directly to the community they serve.

Catalyst works closely with communities to understand their needs so that they can develop solutions at no cost to taxpayers. The solutions frequently transform the under-utilized property into a community asset that combines art, architecture, and advertising in a unique way.

Women and The Vote NYS Initiative Honors State Suffragists

ROCHESTER, N.Y. /ScoopCloud/ -- Women and the Vote NYS announces that a new initiative, timed to coincide with the 19th Amendment Centennial, is being launched to develop a mobile-friendly online database with interactive map of gravesites across New York State of the suffragists who worked tirelessly to bring about women's right to vote.

The goal is to catalogue both well-known suffragists, regardless of gender, as well as individuals whose contributions may be all but lost to history. Additionally, the site will provide links to voter registration.

A second focus of the project will take place on Election Day 2020, when filmmakers from across the state will be stationed at suffragists' gravesites to interview visitors coming with their "I Voted' stickers. Those interviews will be assembled and edited into a documentary film, ELECTION DAY 2020 NYS.

Residents across New York State who know of, or are related to, an individual who took an active role in the Suffragist movement are invited to help identify their gravesite by visiting the website http://www.womenandthevotenys.com/ and adding information, including:
* Name of the suffragist
* Name and location of the cemetery where the suffragist is buried
* Names of any living relatives
* Suffragist activities in which the individual was involved
* Photo of the gravesite or other historic photos

In addition to adding suffragist listings to the website, residents are invited to join the "Suffragist Search Parties," in which groups of volunteers will populate the website catalogue by entering information on suffragists.

Rochester-based party dates include:
* Saturday, February 22 from 10 am to 1 pm at the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House Carriage House, 17 Madison St, Rochester, NY
* Saturday, March 14 from 10 am to 1 pm at the 1872 Café, 431 W Main St, Rochester, NY
* Friday, March 27 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation, River Campus Libraries. University of Rochester
* Saturday, April 4 from 10 am to 1 pm at the 1872 Café
* Friday April 24 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation

Because of space limitations, residents interested in volunteering to participate in these events through researching, fact checking, and entering confirmed suffragist submissions must register in advance, by sending an email noting date(s) available to info@womenandthevotenys.com. Volunteers will need to supply their own computers for data entry

This project is the brainchild of Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker, programmer, and educator Linda Moroney, owner of Low to the Ground Productions. Linda will produce and direct the documentary ELECTION DAY 2020 NYS. RMA Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Strategies that Helped Secure Amazon Deal for City of Deltona

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. /ScoopCloud/ -- RMA (www.rma.us.com) has now revealed the international deal-making that was required to secure an Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) distribution center as the anchor for the new Portland Industrial Park in Deltona, Florida. RMA's economic development and real estate project management team brokered the deal between DOT Properties headquartered in Australia; Seefried Industrial Properties, the developer for Amazon; and the City. RMA was hired by the City just one year ago to create a 5-year Strategic Plan, and now, a 2020 opening is anticipated for the business park.

"This is a remarkable achievement for Deltona, and we are pleased that RMA was the catalyst behind this transformative deal," said Chris Brown, RMA's Principal/Real Estate Broker. "Our strategic plan revealed an opportunity which we aggressively pursued; making the right connections and creating a win-win scenario for all."

As RMA crafted the Strategic Plan, it became apparent that the key to a business park included approximately 240 acres of prime undeveloped property along Interstate 4. This undeveloped property provided all of the necessary attributes required by major distribution centers. RMA contacted the owners abroad and commenced a series of meetings to discuss and define goals for the property. All agreed that the highest and best use was as a business park with logistics facilities, and RMA utilized their extensive network to reach out specifically to developers that specialized in those target industries.

Deltona's Economic Development Department, headed up by Jerry Mayes and Dr. Tom Tomerlin, had identified specific targeted industries with the stated goal of the City to attract corporate business investment and quality jobs. Early stages of RMA's discussions included meetings with Duke Energy, Halifax Health, Deltona Village, Team Volusia and other stakeholders in the region.

With the land secured and a vision in place, RMA contacted Seefried Industrial Properties headquartered in Atlanta and initiated the plan to secure the Amazon distribution center, a pivotal move for the industrial park.

"We were confident that RMA would create the strategies and relationships necessary to achieve the development of a business park and manufacturing related recruitment," said Jerry Mayes, Economic Development Manager. "However, what they accomplished in such a short time span is truly remarkable and will spur additional commercial growth in the City. We are very proud of this partnership, and we look forward to more successful ventures to come."

Development of the site will begin immediately, with a planned 2020 opening. Within the first 5 years, 500 new jobs will be created according to the incentive agreement with the City and County. The City's focused 5-year strategic plan, with targeted economic development implementation strategies, is quickly and successfully becoming a reality.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- NotaryCam®, the pioneering leader in online notarization and original provider of mortgage eClosing solutions, today announced that it has been approved by the Michigan Department of State to provide both eNotary and remote online notarization (RON) services to the more than 113,000 notaries public registered in the state.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson noted in a joint announcement regarding the availability of eNotary/RON and online voter registration, "Both programs represent steps forward for Michigan in using technology to provide modern and convenient services to residents."

As an approved vendor, NotaryCam had to meet certain state requirements, including providing a demonstration of their notarial platforms to department staff that covered specific security features like tamper-evident documents and an audit trail. To date, 13 states, including Michigan, have enacted RON laws, and another nine states are set to do so in 2020.

"The availability of RON nationwide is inevitable, but it is still a cause for celebration when individual states join the movement to modernize the notarial act by legalizing RON," NotaryCam Founder and CEO Rick Triola said. "NotaryCam is proud to be among the first vendors approved by the state to provide RON services, and we look forward to helping Michigan notaries continue to deliver the invaluable services they always have, albeit in a more modern and streamlined fashion."

"As an early adopter of RON closings, CSS has been working with Rick Triola and his NotaryCam technology and team for years," said Jerome Jelinek, CEO and General Counsel of Traverse City, Mich.-based Corporate Settlement Solutions (CSS). "NotaryCam closings greatly enhance the customer experience of real estate closings. United States Air Force Partners with UniverseIT and Classe365

SUGARLAND, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- UniverseIT is excited to announce a new partnership with the United States Air Force (USAF) which encompasses serving three training schools - the Air Ground Operations School (AGOS); Weapons School (USAFWS); and Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Operations School (AMMOS).

This partnership will provide solutions to current problems with data acquisition and management, prerequisite tracking and elimination of physical media for all three USAF school locations. Work began to implement the solution on November 4.

UniverseIT conducted an in-depth discovery process of the three schools to determine needs and to look for synergies and commonalities in order to consolidate and streamline work as needed. This resulted in several customizations Classe365 is doing for the USAF based on their specific needs.

Joe Eldridge, president and CEO, UniverseIT says, "This partnership will provide improved administration processes and procedures and more efficient workflow for its students and school administration; Classe365 allows us to customize it based on the needs to school. We can accommodate most scenarios."

Many of the schools lack a strong central single source of truth for any given data point, instead relying on not only the military databases they have access to, but also more than one Excel spreadsheet containing copies of the same data.

UniverseIT is an authorized reseller and implementer of Classe365. It will go a long way towards establishing a master record for each data point while allowing other solutions to inherit that data via integration, rather than keeping its own independent copy.

Classe365, a student information system that comes with a learning management system and more, will allow document tracking features to be implemented for each applicant as well as giving them an electronic test and recording their score electronically. This will, in turn, allow the schools to ensure they have applicants moving through the process efficiently while being aware of what is and is not complete.

In addition, the schools don't currently have a standard way to distribute course content online. Many students who appear for the programs are provided physical DVDs and notebooks with course content. When coupled with tracking challenges, efficiency is lacking and both time and materials are being wasted. Classe365 and SharePoint online will allow for archiving and presentation of the course content online to each student so that no hard copies will be needed.

UniverseIT is also providing custom work and development to automate test and quiz generation from customizable question banks.

About UniverseIT:

UniverseIT provides IT solutions for small to medium-sized business and educational institutions of all sizes and types. Its philosophy is to provide simple, honest, and empowering IT solutions to launch an enterprise into success. UniverseIT is a Microsoft Partner as well as the premier Classe365 Partner in the United States.

Joe Eldridge, a 19-year Microsoft veteran, directed numerous organizations at Microsoft before founding UniverseIT. He has many Microsoft certifications and has always worked on commercial software, while leading numerous large projects to success.

Leading this implementation is Erica Weldon, vice president and COO. Her ability to break down a problem and solve it in the most efficient manner is second to none.

Osceola City Council Green Lights Contractor Bidding On New Wastewater Plant

OSCEOLA, Iowa /ScoopCloud/ -- The Osceola City Council has approved a schedule for taking bids on construction of the updated wastewater treatment facility. A recent pre-bid meeting brought in a handful of interest, but with design and budgeting finalized, the City is now able to open the call for bids to contractors interested in undertaking the project.

As far back as 2010, new EPA regulations as well as the continued growth of Osceola itself made the need for modernizing and updating the wastewater treatment unavoidable. According to the EPA, the acceptable limits of certain water constituents were lowered, making the current water treatment plant incapable of meet the new regulations. After many years of research, studies, plans and financial estimates, the project is ready to move forward by beginning the contractor selection process.

The projected timeline for the new wastewater treatment plant's construction is scheduled roughly to take two years, then the repurposing of the current facility is slated to take another two years. All of this will be done before the project is finalized or costs are realized. At this time, total projected costs for the new plant is estimated to be just under $30 million dollars.

A large portion of that cost - roughly 47% - is being covered through a partnership with Osceola's major industrial contributors. The balance will be financed through the State Revolving Fund Loan via the Iowa Finance Authority. Utility payers will pay their proportionate share through minor updates, not expected to exceed the standard cost of living rate over the next several years.

While the updated treatment facility will meet EPA demands, increase treatment capabilities, as well as offer expansion to support future economic growth, several other benefits to the updates will be realized. Significantly, the city of Osceola was recently awarded a $2.4 million grant designated to fund projects which improve the quality of stormwater runoff. Their eligibility to even apply was granted through the planned wastewater treatment plant updates and the use of a State Revolving Fund Loan. Using this grant, green practices such as pervious pavers and intakes designed to separate debris from stormwater runoff will be incorporated in the downtown area, further improving water quality throughout the community.

In addition to better wastewater management, compliance and water runoff quality, the City of Osceola has recently taken on ownership of the local golf course wherein new wastewater treatment facility will allow for additional money-saving strategies.

"No pun intended, but we're 'teeing ourselves up' to be able to take advantage of the new graywater system so we can irrigate the municipal golf course," said Ty Wheeler, Osceola City Administrator. "While it's not part of the current plans for the treatment plant, we are expecting future strategies like this to save the city money and facilitate business and community growth."

Once completed, the updated treatment plant will not only increase flow capacity of the wastewater that's taken in, but will also see increased capacity in the treatment of the constituents found within that flow. Updates will ensure the city's compliance with DNR and EPA regulations for several decades to come.

"We have big plans for future growth of the City," said Wheeler. "These updates open us to increasing new businesses opportunities and more residents far into the future."

If you are interested in submitting a bid for this project, please read specifications, deadlines, and all other pertinent information on the Osceola, Iowa Web site at: https://osceolaia.net/revised-notice-to-bidders-construction-of-wastewater-treatment-facility-improvements/

For more information about the wastewater treatment plant project, contact Ty Wheeler, Osceola City Administrator, via email, by calling 641-342-2377, or by visiting the administration offices at 115 N. Fillmore St., Osceola, IA 50213.

Avondale Estates Mayoral Candidate Clai Brown Refutes Disinformation, Invites More Community Dialog

AVONDALE ESTATES, Ga. /ScoopCloud/ -- 2019 Candidate for Mayor and former City Manager Clai Brown (https://claibrownformayor.com/) has issued the following statement to ensure Avondale Estates citizens have access to facts on matters that may determine their November 5 election-day decisions about the future of their unique city and community.

"As anyone who has known me during my decade-long tenure as Avondale Estates city manager will tell you, I am not a hothead. I do not seek out confrontation, and I do not relish pointing out the mistakes of others. It's just not how I was raised, so I've remained quiet when confronted with disinformation and personal attacks about my decision to resign in 2017 and an employment contract over which I had zero influence. Perhaps too quiet for my own good. My faith that truth ultimately triumphs comes from the values I learned as a child. Plus, I've always enjoyed the old adage that 'No good comes from wrestling with a pig. You'll both get dirty, but the pig enjoys it.'

However, last weekend I changed my mind, because I realized that the absence of a factual account does not begin with the events leading up to and culminating in my resignation, but hails all the way back to my initial employment agreement with the City and through the annual employee review cycle during which my tenure was brought before the board, praised explicitly and extended. My conviction that truth prevails is unwavering, but my commitment to transparency and to the loyalty of my family, friends, supporters and neighbors demands that I speak out now.

My 2017 decision to resign was based primarily on my concern that elected officials, whether by ignorance or naivete, were not adhering to the City Charter and in particular to Section 2.30 related to Commission interference with administration. The official with authority to correct the situation failed to do so. My decision was painful, but ethically unavoidable, as I felt I had explored every alternative for resolving the issues. Frankly, I no longer had the conviction that I could do what was best for my hometown in the role of City Manager.

Not only was it time for me to go, it was also time for me to seek another role from which I could lead effectively. From my perspective, Avondale Estates may be growing and modernizing, but that does not mean it must shed long-standing traditions of transparency, integrity, trust or adherence to documented governing principles.

I think we can agree that we need them now more than ever.

In the aftermath of my resignation and the unintended conflict that arose as our residents struggled to understand decisions made out of public view, claims emerged that my employment agreement, including terms related to resignation and early retirement, were secretive, murky and probably unethical on my part. As common sense would dictate, city employees cannot approve the terms of their own employment. My only involvement in the terms of my hiring was possessing a valuable skillset and loyalty to a budget-conscious municipality poised for unprecedented change. The city of Avondale Estates made its offer, and I accepted the job as a career decision in line with my experience and skills.

It is that simple. The spurious assertion that I manipulated or conspired to influence my employment contract with Avondale Estates either at the time of my hiring or at any juncture prior to my resignation offends my family's reputation and can easily be disproven by reading public record.

I encourage every resident of our unique community who has questions or concerns about my record as City Manager of Avondale Estates and my vision for the future of our city to visit https://claibrownformayor.com/.

Further, I urge our residents to RSVP to one or more of the remaining hosted community events where you can learn more about why I believe I am the most qualified candidate to become the next mayor of Avondale Estates - the city I am proud to call my hometown."

Visit the Clai Brown for Mayor website to RSVP for one of these Meet & Greet opportunities to discuss these issues with Clai one-to-one:
* 10/27: 4-5:30 p.m.
* 10/29: 7-8:30 p.m.
* 11/1: 7-8:30 p.m.

If you have any questions, please contact Clai at claibrownformayor@gmail.com or by telephone at 404-963-6108.

Keep Our Seniors Safe Act Signed by Governor Newsom

SAN DIEGO, Calif. /ScoopCloud/ -- Consumer Advocates for RCFE Reform (CARR) announces that California Governor Newsom signed the Keep Our Seniors Safe Act, a part of SB 172 (Portantino) which was signed into law on 12 October, 2019.

The Keep Our Seniors Safe Act strengthens the Health and Safety Code by adding safe gun storage requirements for firearms retained by residential care facilities for the elderly (RCFE - also known as assisted living facilities).

CARR sponsored this common-sense safe gun storage legislation in recognition that an estimated 70% of assisted living residents have a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease or related dementias (ADRD). Dementia is a primary reason families seek an assisted living placement for a family member.

Many assisted living facilities are licensed to accept and retain residents having mild to severe cognitive impairment. Common characteristics include disorientation, confusion, changes in mood or personality and impaired judgment. CARR's public records' research evidenced that some assisted living facilities were storing firearms in unlocked desk drawers, or allowing residents to retain weapons in their rooms.

The characteristics and associated behaviors of a resident with cognitive impairment, coupled with unsecured weapons inside an RCFE posed an unreasonable risk of harm to residents, families and any third party working in or visiting an assisted living facility.

The Keep Our Seniors Safe Act fills the statutory and regulatory gaps concerning firearm storage by requiring weapons to be centrally stored in the facility, in a locked gun safe meeting the regulatory standards established by the California Department of Justice.

The statute advances CARR's consumer-driven agenda focused on reducing health and safety risks to residents living in California's licensed assisted living facilities.

"This legislation (Chapter 840) gives the state's agency (Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division DSS/CCLD) responsible for licensing assisted living facilities definitive and unequivocal standards for determining compliant gun storage," said CARR's President, Christine Murphy.

This is CARR's second piece of legislation to become law; the first was AB 1523 (Atkins) requiring assisted living facilities to carry liability insurance.

About CARR:
Consumer Advocates for RCFE Reform (CARR) is a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization promoting transparency and accountability for consumers using assisted living services, and specializing in public document research on assisted living facilities, and the state's oversight of the industry. "The strategies behind 'Investment Tourism' help cities capitalize on their current tourism program by identifying enhanced opportunities, elevating engagement and creating clear pathways to connect," said Sharon McCormick, Director of Business Attraction & Marketing for RMA. "Through our companies' decades of work with cities, counties and special districts nationwide, creating both economic development and marketing programs, we noticed an untapped potential in the tourism area. The new protocols we are establishing for destinations will now enable them to take their tourism strategies to the next level."

Through targeted and tailored messaging, visitors will be able to view a destination as more than a vacation get-a-way. Expanding on a tourist's interest and connection to a destination, this platform will introduce the greater possibilities that await--be it a second home, a small business or a major development opportunity.

"Investment Tourism begins with an evaluation of a destination's brand, its leadership and support assets," said Carolyn J. Feimster, CRX, CMD, Founder and President of CJF Marketing International. "Competitive advantages are highlighted and a unique outreach program that interfaces with the key marketing and economic development strategies is implemented. Through enhanced social media, and growing tech advancements including chatbots, virtual reality and augmented reality, the targeted opportunities to connect and educate are growing exponentially."

For destinations that already have both a well-constructed brand and a Travel & Tourism Program in place, these five tips will help capitalize on the current tourism market:
* Craft social media/digital ads inviting tourists to discover investment opportunities in your area with links to a robust, highly functional economic development website that includes top opportunities for investment.

* Create tourism videos that include a call-to-action to learn more about investment opportunities. Feature real stories about living and doing business in your city.

* Include a call-to-action in tourism print ads to "own" a piece of your destination.

* Insert investment opportunity messages within district light pole banner programs, expanding upon the typical dining, shopping, entertainment verbiage.

* Invest in a mobile visitor information center. Educate and assign staff to the center, ensuring your visitors see the best your destination has to offer - with friendly helpful information about all your assets, including investment opportunities.

Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Inc. Partners with SCI Mercer to Train Service Dogs for Veterans

PITTSBURGH, Pa. /ScoopCloud/ -- It is with great pleasure that Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs announces its latest partnership, with the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Mercer. As part of our new partnership, incarcerated veterans will train some of our future service dogs, beginning at approximately 5 months of age, all while earning college credit.

The program is already underway, with our Founder & Chief Operating Officer, Carol Borden recently completing a full seven days of classes for the 12 selected incarcerated veterans, teaching them our comprehensive training regimen. While required to pass the written portion of the class with an 80% or better, we are proud to say that of the 12 participants, they all scored above 95%.

Now that they are ready to begin training, 4 young future service dogs are on their way to Mercer from our Florida headquarters and are scheduled to arrive at Mercer later this week.

Once they arrive, the dogs will remain with the inmates 24 hours a day, for several months, and will be participating daily in classes and public access-style learning adventures due to Mercer's unique design featuring a cafeteria, classrooms, hospital, auditorium, gymnasium, commissary and library - the conditions are perfect for re-creating public access-type scenarios for the dogs to train in.

The teams training dogs inside Mercer will be visited weekly or more by our Pennsylvania Regional Trainer, to ensure program compliance and monitor each dogs' progress as they go through our positive-reinforcement curriculum.

An additional key benefit of this program is that the selected incarcerated veterans will be earning college credits. This program will not only help the disabled Pennsylvania veterans who ultimately receive the donated service dogs; but it is teaching a new, marketable skillset and industry to those currently incarcerated.

"I have always been so inspired by the service and sacrifice of our American heroes," said Sen. Brooks, who worked for two years to bring the program to SCI Mercer. "The brotherhood that unites our veterans, and the healing power of a dog, have always impressed me as well. This transformative new program unites these special elements into one heart-warming support network, and is destined to produce benefits that will allow veterans to help other veterans in a life-changing way."

Asked about the new program, Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs Founder & CEO, Carol Borden said: "I couldn't be more excited about the magnificent start of this ground-breaking program. We expect great things - not only in the training of the dogs that will be donated to veterans in Pennsylvania; but that we will be giving the incarcerated veterans hope for a new future once they have served their time. By participating in this program, they are already serving their community".

Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization founded in Williston, Florida and has grown into a nation-wide Service Dog Organization. We rescue, raise, train and donate individually trained medical service dogs to veterans, first responders and others who suffer from disabilities including PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, seizure disorders, diabetic alert, mobility issues and more. Guardian Angels receives up to 40 inquiries each day for one of their medical Service Dogs.

If you'd like to learn more about our programs, get involved, make a contribution, or be part of supporting this life-saving project please call 800-398-6102 or visit our website at: https://www.medicalservicedogs.org.

Real Change: Expanding Congress to Include a Citizens Assembly

WASHINGTON D.C. /ScoopCloud/ -- An Assembly of 600 citizen-delegates is being established by NewUnity.Org and it is expected to eventually become a third-chamber of Congress via constitutional amendment, creating a tri-cameral legislature. The first session of the Assembly is scheduled to start in early 2020. Any U.S. citizen over the age of 18 can be a delegate to the Assembly, provided they satisfy some eligibility requirements.

The Assembly advances democracy and mitigates many of the issues that have plagued the political process. There are no special interests, no political parties and no big money donors involved in selection of delegates and therefore none of the conflicts of interests or compromises that afflict many who are elected to Congress. As a non-partisan body, the Assembly can reduce the polarization that permeates Washington and, indeed, the country.

There is no doubt Americans want real change. 66% of Americans say they want major structural change in government, according to a poll of Americans by U.Chicago Harris/AP-NORC which was released in May 2019. Reforming Congress is clearly the place to start. It has the lowest job-approval rating of any branch of government. Congress's approval rating is only 17%, according to Gallup Poll in Aug. 2019. For reference, approval of the Supreme Court is 51% and of the President is 39%, according to Gallup Polls as of September 2018 and August 2019, respectively.

These polls highlight the extent of America's frustration and disgust with the polarized state of politics and gridlock in government. Research by Greater Good at Univ of Berkeley in March 2019 describes the destructive impact that increasing polarization is having on America. In summary, the adverse impact includes: winner-take-all politics, demonization of opposing views, proliferation of partisan propaganda, increased stress and general distrust of government. As an institution whose members are not selected by political parties, the Assembly is a solution that can both improve democracy and unify the country.

Delegates will be chosen from a database of over 230 million adults by an independent non-partisan organization using a transparent selection process that is similar to selection for jury duty. Given the Assembly involves patriotic service to country, organizers believe many will consider it a supreme honor to serve their country.

As a group, Delegates will mirror the general population to a 99% confidence level with approximately 5% margin of error. A 55% super-majority of Delegates will be required to adopt any measure meaning, statistically, decisions of the Assembly are consistent with the majority of Americans 99% of the time. It is obvious that Congress, as currently structured, could not match the Assembly's 99% level of performance.

Furthermore, the Assembly's demographic composition will closely mirror America's whereas Congress' composition is very different. For example, in Congress, 25% are female vs 51% of America. Through its composition and its voting rules, the Assembly will be unique in reflecting the will of the people.

Direct participation in government by citizens is not a new concept. Citizens already participate directly in one branch of government, the judiciary, through jury duty. People who are called for jury duty are selected from a database of all citizens - a sort of lottery selection process modified with some eligibility requirements. Most Americans have been called to jury duty at some point in their life. Nearly 15% of American adults, over 30 million people, are summoned to jury duty each year, according to a study by the National Center for State Courts. The Assembly simply extends the concept of direct citizen participation to the legislative branch of government.

NewUnity.Org believes citizens should participate in making laws - not just administering them as a juror. Service in the Assembly may someday be referred to as 'Assembly duty.' As with jury duty, delegates will be compensated for service and expenses will be reimbursed.

Direct citizen participation alone would add a lot of value; but the Assembly does even more. Delegates are able to do research and they have access to data and resources to fully explore an issue. Then they debate the issue with other delegates who have opposing views and are equally well-informed. Some will be persuaded to change their original position on an issue. The outcome of this deliberative process are decisions that are well-considered and fully-informed. The government can look to the Assembly for guidance on what the American people really think about issues and policies - rather than relying upon polls of uninformed people. This clearly would be a significant improvement over the present situation.

The Assembly's model is applying, on a national scale, a concept that is being tested in Dallas this week at an event called America in One Room or A1R. Five hundred citizens have been selected to statistically mirror America and they will debate five major national issues over three days. A1R will show if citizens can come together to seriously debate and vote on major issues. Direct citizen participation has already been applied successfully in over 25 countries globally. A1R is a Helena Project and involves Stanford University's Center for Deliberative Democracy and NORC at the University of Chicago. Lessons from A1R will be useful in establishing the Assembly and other direct democracy initiatives. The New York Times published an Op-Ed about A1R in August and is expected to publish outcomes of A1R after the event. Lessons from A1R will inform the operation of the Assembly.

"Everyone will have the chance to be a modern 'Mr. Smith' as in the classic movie 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington' - an ordinary citizen is able to have a meaningful impact on government," said Ms. Anderson, a spokesperson for NewUnity.Org. "The Assembly reflects the actual will of the people in the entire country rather than representatives that are influenced by their political party, special interests and reflect the narrow preferences of those in their district who happen to vote on one day." Finally, she stated, "New Unity.Org does not undertake this initiative with a view to favor, or disfavor, any political party. The Assembly's objective is solely to benefit America by bolstering our democracy. It is a solution that stems from a long-term general disenchantment with politics and government."

Standing up this new Assembly is a massive undertaking. It takes a large number of volunteers and millions of dollars of donations from individuals and institutions. NewUnity.Org is a grassroots effort. It is not backed by any corporation or special interests. It is not backed by any corporation or special interests. NewUnity.Org plans to raise over $2 million by the end of this year and to start the first session of the Assembly in early 2020. Those who volunteer or donate will be doing a patriotic contribution to American democracy. NewUnity.Org has opened a donation portal on its website.

The first session of the Assembly is expected to meet at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. NewUnity.Org is recruiting hundreds of volunteers to help achieve its mission. As an incentive, volunteers and donors will be granted a higher chance to be selected as a delegate to the historic first session of the Assembly.

Air Force Pilot and Trump National Security Council Advisor August Pfluger Announces Campaign for TX-11

SAN ANGELO, Texas /ScoopCloud/ -- Today, August Pfluger (R-San Angelo) announced his campaign to represent Texas' 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. For nearly 20 years, Pfluger has served his country as an elite F-22 fighter pilot, a decorated Air Force officer, and most recently, as a key national security advisor to President Trump.

"As a combat pilot, and later as a national security advisor to President Donald Trump, I've spent my life defending this country," said Pfluger. "Now I'm running for Congress to defend our traditional Texas values and stand up for the things that have always made this country great: family, faith, and freedom."

As a seventh-generation Texan, August learned the value of a hard day's work on his family's ranches in Kimble and Concho counties. Those early West Texas values led August to a life of service and leadership - he earned his Eagle Scout badge at the age of 15 and was later named as captain of the varsity football and baseball teams at San Angelo Central High School.

After high school, August followed in his grandfather's footsteps and answered his nation's call to serve.

Upon graduating with honors from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Pfluger went on to serve his country in uniform for nearly two decades - commanding hundreds of combat airmen and women and serving in the Pentagon and NATO Command. Today, Lieutenant Colonel Pfluger is a decorated combat veteran with over 300 hours of direct action against radical jihadists in the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

In 2019, August was called to serve his nation in a different capacity - as a national security advisor in the White House. As a member of President Donald J. Trump's National Security Council staff, August was entrusted with our nation's highest security clearance and charged with advising President Trump on a host of foreign and domestic threats to our nation's security.

"My family and I are truly humbled by the outpouring of support for my campaign from so many members of the community," continued Pfluger. "I want to thank everyone for the countless calls and texts I received encouraging me to defend our shared values in Congress...I will not let you down."

Today, Pfluger lives in San Angelo and works in his family ranching business in Kimble and Concho counties. August still serves as Lt. Col. in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and recently founded an energy investment company that operates in the Permian Basin. August holds two advanced degrees in aeronautical sciences and military strategy and is completing a third Masters Degree in International Business and Policy at Georgetown University.

August is a conservative Republican, a proud husband and father, and a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He met his wife, Camille (also a native Texan) at his family ranch in October 2000. They have three young daughters, Vivian, Caroline, and Juliana. In his free time, August enjoys coaching his daughters' youth soccer teams and leading Bible study groups for military service members - something he's done at every base he's been stationed.

In the weeks ahead, August will be traveling across the 29 counties of TX-11 to meet with supporters, listen to the concerns of his future constituents, and share his plan to bring strong, conservative leadership to Congress.

GMAR and Michigan State Police Trooper School Come Together to Sponsor Medical Service Dog

LANSING, Mich. /ScoopCloud/ -- Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs announced that in February 2019, Sgt. McRae of the Michigan State Police Trooper Recruit School set a goal: to honor Michigan State Trooper Craig A. Scott; a military veteran who was killed in the line of duty after 7 years on the force in 1982.

Each recruit class creates a Hero WOD (workout of the day) for a fellow trooper and performs the Hero WOD at the gym. This 135th trooper recruit school added a fundraiser with an ambitious goal. To raise $25,000 to sponsor the training of a medical service dog for a deserving recipient.

The members of the 135th Trooper Recruit School were well on their way to that goal, raising $9,200 during a Hero WOD. That's when GMAR (The Greater Metropolitan Association of REALTORS(R)), reached out to help them complete their goal. GMAR has already been involved in raising funds for service dogs for several years, with their "5 Years, 5 Dogs, 5 Lives Saved" campaign, and they have previously completed sponsorship of Service Dogs Cobalt REALTOR(R) Blue, and Thor, and have future Service Dog Independence, currently in-training.

On Monday, August 12, 2019 the two came together, and GMAR presented a check to The Michigan State Police for $15,725 - covering the balance of the Trooper Recruit School's sponsorship.

The funds raised and contributed will be sent to Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, that has raised and trained more than 320 service dogs for deserving individuals in need nationwide, predominantly for veterans and first-responders.

To date, Guardian Angels has paired more than 20 dogs in the State of Michigan. But the waiting list continues to grow. The number of both veterans and first-responders facing issues such as PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, Seizure and Diabetic disorders and mobility issues is steadily increasing, and it is the hope of the Michigan State Police and GMAR that this individually-trained medical service dog, yet named will greatly improve life for its future recipient.
