A team of these disaster response veterans set up their signature bright yellow tent at the expo and introduced those attending to the Volunteer Ministers program and its life-affirming technology.

In South Africa, the Gauteng Department of Health partners with the country's Volunteer Ministers to train its emergency and disaster personnel. "This Tools for Life skills program is not just theoretical training," said the station manager of Emergency Medical Services of the West Rand City municipality. "We also need help." He found these courses prevent burnout by addressing "real, daily life challenges."

"The Tools for Life made me more resilient," said the chief chaplain of the Gauteng Department of Health. They helped him find "the knowledge and strength that I can face more pressure going forward."

Those trained in this technology are far more able to interact with victims and help them overcome their trauma.

Among those presenting the program at the Disasters Expo USA booth were veterans of the Volunteer Ministers' response to Hurricane Ian, which wreaked havoc in Southwest Florida in 2022. Feedback from victims of that hurricane show the impact of the skills these victims have learned and use.

"We've been waking up every morning to this devastation," said one victim "and these guys are just the bright part of our day." "Now that you're here, I'm not overwhelmed anymore," said another. "I'm going to be able to survive this and put everything in my life back together. People helping people is the silver lining of the whole disaster."

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard developed the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program in the mid-1970s to empower people wishing to help those in need. "A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well," he wrote.

The tools he developed for the program are now available as free online courses on the Scientology and Volunteer Ministers websites.

Tampa-Based Human Rights Activist Helps Protect Youth from Human Trafficking

Founded in 2014, Pastor Mitchell saw an opportunity to speak to the business community of South Florida, with a vision to raise the bar of character and ethics in the area.

The other 2024 Catalyst winner is Sgt. Danny Pacheco Jr., who founded Delray Kicks, a soccer program that works with mainly immigrant children, who are often wary of law enforcement. As an immigrant from Peru, Pacheco Jr. understood the children's experiences and strove to create a program that has helped build relationships, taught citizenship, and brought positive change to the lives of the kids they serve, making Delray Beach a better community for everyone.

"There is no application for the Catalyst Award," explained Perlman. "The work these recipients do speaks so loudly, that it cannot help but be noticed."

The Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation also awards grants through an application process and these recipients were also recognized at the luncheon with presentations about each organization's mission, which will be accelerated by the Foundation's grant.

Starting today, the essay contest is open at participating Applebee's restaurants in Florida and Georgia that are owned and operated by local franchisee, Doherty Enterprises (see complete list of participating restaurants below).

One deserving teacher from each school district throughout 13 counties in Florida and Georgia will be awarded with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class!*

To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee's explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee's "Teacher of the Year."

Elementary school students are required to nominate their teacher with a 1/2 page essay, while middle and high school students are required to write a 500-word essay on why their teacher is most deserving. As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use.

Essay submissions are limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee's restaurants from Monday, January 8 through Sunday, March 17th, no later than 10 p.m. ET. Winners will be announced on Friday, April 19th and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Friday, June 14th, 2024. If end-of-year parties are not viable, class parties will be replaced with two Free-Dinner-for-Four certificates for the winning essay writer.
